Cecil B. DeMille's pre-Hays Code Roman costume drama manages to mix fast-and-loose historical facts with melodrama and titillation. Fredric March plays Marcus Superbus, a Roman soldier and womanizer who jeopardizes his position in Nero's storm troopers by developing a crush on a beautiful Christian girl, Mercia (Elissa Landi). With the Christians keeping their faith far underground, Superbus walks a tightrope between his obligations to the state and his love for Mercia until she and her family are rounded up and hauled off to the arena. <I>The Sign of the Cross</I> is not without its problems; by modern standards, it often seems slow and stagy, and its moralistic message comes across as blunt and heavy-handed. DeMille, however, shrewdly knew how to keep an audience's attention in ways that would have been impossible in subsequent years. Consider Claudette Colbert as the alluring, evil Poppaea, lolling in a bath of asses' milk with her breasts almost completely exposed. Or there's the scene where Marcus tries to get Mercia to loosen up a bit; his idea of a fun time is to take her to an orgy where she's groped by a lesbian during an erotic dance. Then there's Charles Laughton as the decadent Nero, his fey manner abetted by an oiled-up boy-toy at his side in nearly every scene. The climactic scenes at the arena are still violent today, with Christians being gnawed by lions, gladiators knocking each other's brains out, and an Amazon spearing a Pygmy and carrying him around like a kebab! <I>The Sign of the Cross</I> was heavily cut for rerelease in later years but is now available again in its uncut form. <I>--Jerry Renshaw</I>

In the third night of the great fire!.......2006-10-23
Brutal, dramatic and poignant film that recreates the events after the painful destruction of Rome by Nero's caprice: Marcus is the loyal officer who falls in love with a very young and beaty Christian; but in the meantime Poppea is in love with him, and due that reason she will send to death the woman he loves.
Claudette Colbert as Nero' wife is alluring and seductive: Frederic March as Marcus is believe believable too, but Charles Laughton as Nero simply is I top form.
Sometimes uneven and sometimes taut; but despite of the facts, the script maintains its force all the way through.
A film worth to see it.
The movie that almost founded camp!.......2005-02-08
SOTC is so far over the top, it's a classic in spite of itself. Almost laughable all the way through, and 99% prime ham, but at the same time, you can appreciate the whole DeMille brand-stamp of epic films, as well as what they could get away with pre-code! March is a little stiff as the proper Roman patrician party boy with a crisis (Marcus Superbus, fer Godsake. Even his name is campy). Laughton has never been so, well, shall we say, closet-free in a role. He just exudes ultra-high camp. The villian is appropriately slimy, and Claudette Colbert is on fire, she's so hot. The colesseum scenes are still eye-grabbing, with all kinds of 30s-style violence and suggestion, some very unexpected. A definite must-own by any movie buff, so, naturally, it's out of print with, apparently, no plans for a DVD in sight. Thanks again, studios. Greed always wins out.
PS: If you're consider yourself an easily-offended Christian, don't watch this. If you do, you have no justification to complain afterward.
PPS: If you find THIS film gross/gory, have you ever seen any films made after 1957?
the roar of the lions, the smell of the crowd.......2004-04-07
Bizarre and lavish, this 1932 epic is an entertaining curiosity piece. It starts in "Rome...the third night of the Great Fire, 64 A.D.", with Charles Laughton as a flabby, insane Nero, playing a harp and taking delight in the conflagration, with his hatred for Christians the basis for the plot.
It meshes together the faith and determination of a few brave souls with the debauchery of the times and mankind's fascination with the misfortunes of others, culminating in the remarkably well filmed Colosseum scene.
From Claudette Colbert, who plays Poppaea, Nero's wife, bathing in milk (and it was real milk, which started to sour and stink on the second of many days of filming), to the crocodiles on the march, there are depictions of every kind of excess and sensual liberty.
The costuming is skimpy, even to Frederic March's laughable micro-mini outfits, and the dialogue is often silly with some of the hammiest performances on film, but DeMille's talent for orchestrating crowd scenes, and the good/evil theme of the film make for outrageous and sometimes thought-provoking viewing. It's about depravity, courage, and the triumph (if only spiritually) of the underdog, and well worth seeing for the arena sequence alone.
Based on Wilson Barrett's popular 1895 play, the cinematography by Karl Struss (who in his long career also did the '58 cult favorite "The Fly") is brilliant, with many cross images using light/shade and doors. Total running time is 125 minutes.

Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die.......2002-09-19
...
I found this to be the general attitude of the Roman people, if this movie is at all historically accurate, and I believe it is. A very pitiful, empty, tragic existence. To hate other people so much just because they love and serve God, and to be so deadened in spirit that you don't mind killing en masse.
Well... I watched it last night because it has been years since I've seen a DeMille movie and I wanted to see what it was like. While I will not dismiss DeMille as a director, I think I will dismiss this movie from consideration for my collection. For one thing, the characters weren't very developed. They got somewhat lost in a sea of extras and Roman spectacles and I couldn't really get into their shoes and understand or feel much for them. Yes, it was sad when Mercia had to go face the lions, but by the time it happened, I'd been sickened by so many disgusting spectacles in the Coliseum that I didn't really think I could deal with any more tragedy. I would say that the only character that moved me deeply was the innocent laughing little Christian girl whose mother died. She was so oblivious to what was really happening, and when the kind old man took her up to the lions with him, he told her they were going to see Mother. Very touching.
The main characters....
Charles Laughton was perfect for Nero. You don't want to feel anything good about Nero, and Laughton makes it easy to despise him - the neurotic weirdo with Rome at the mercy of his cruel insanity. He was so disgusting all the way through the movie, and he is last seen calmly eating grapes while human beings are slaughtering and being slaughtered below him.
Claudette Colbert as Poppaea was very strange and I never understood her a bit except that she had designs on Fredric March. Her clothes were slinky and her hair style was weird, and I didn't really like her at all. I did like her pet leopard, though.
Fredric March aka "Marcus Superbus" was okay in his role except for a few minor things. The curled hair was very unbecoming, the outfits he had to walk around in were equally so. They seemed to get worse and worse as the movie wore on, too. And once again the character was undeveloped except for the understanding that he was a womaniser and a roué. (That is an old term meaning cad.)
And there was Mercia, and I can't really say much about her either because her character didn't seem deep enough to jump into. She seemed to be a loving girl devoted to purity and virtue and God, and in the prison it was good to see her ministering to the needs of her fellow prisoners.
Then there was all the risquée display of women... Claudette bathing in her donkey milk bath (gross to begin with) was obviously topless. Then there was the weirdo at Marcus' party who sang "Naked Moon" or whatever it was called and danced around Mercia quite erotically. And in the Coliseum, there were a couple of women being executed who wore nothing but garlands of flowers wrapped around themselves. I just found it weird that a lot of this stuff got past the censors, and I didn't really think it was necessary.
And speaking of the Coliseum, that whole scene was revolting for the simple reason that I don't like to watch people mass murdering each other for the amusement of a degenerated society. It was so disturbing to see the entire audience revelling in the bloodiness of the spectacle.
I won't say that everything in the movie was bad. The motif of the Cross appeared traced in the sand, constructed from branches or twigs, in shadows on the floor from windows... That was very artistic. Mercia once stood against a door as if she was hanging on a cross.
Despite all the negatives and mediocres of this movie there was one element of it that I don't think anyone should ignore. I've known about the martyrdom of Christians in Rome for years, but never really given deep thought to how frightening and terrible it would be. But it is the only cause really worth dying for, and I hope that I would be willing to face lions or fire or whatever else, if I would ever be called to die that way.
So that sums up my opinion of the film. It did leave an impression on me - mostly negative though it may be. Watch it if you want, but I can't highly recommend it, and definitely not for children.

A Bitter Man transformed into An Avenging Angel.......2006-01-14
This is a tale of jealousy, deceit ,greed and betrayal callously worked on a young man just at the point of his life's greatest hopes coming to realization. Innocently imprisoned in one of France's worst , the lesson he learns after accidentally befriending a fellow prisoner is often lost on the audience .
Rather than becoming a revengeful demon as most would think , he is transformed into an avenging angel who facilitates the self undoing of those who wronged him years before. The very vices that wounded him become thier own doom with devastating effect.
Robert Donat's performance far outstrips all other adaptations of this wonderful tale of one man's triumph over hatred and the all too easy to succumb to desire for revenge. The intertwined plots that run throughout the story coupled with a superb supporting cast will keep the viewer riveted to the screen. The screen play follows the original book's story line faithfully as it should.
The costuming and sets are faithfully reproduced to depict the Napoleonic era of this story.
The Count of Monte Cristo is one of literature's greatest works and this film is equal to mirror such a work on film. Enjoy !!
A Pledge Of Revenge Classically Filmed........2005-12-27
Far more than most adaptations of novels, this version of THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO adheres to the novelist's plot and details, and does so to its advantage, as the original is wonderfully full-blooded. The role of Edmond Dantes is played well by Robert Donat, who nicely projects the many moments of peril with which his character deals. The imprisonment and escape scenes at the seabound Chateau D'If, although of a result certain to the viewer, are neatly mounted to create genuine compassion and suspense. Splendidly cast, a wide range of talent brings a quite good balance to each act. The passing from the early tableaux of adventure to the thrust of the story: carefully crafted and complex methods of revenge, is effectively delivered by the scenario. Those who decide to watch this classic film will avoid missing excellent acting from Sidney Blackmer and O.P. Heggie, as well as outstanding art direction and costume design.
The ethic revenge!.......2005-05-18
Alejandro Dumas' classic novel has never been better adapted. The slow process of moral degradation, injustice against this simple man will crash with a real boomerang when the circumstances surround him and through the loyalty and sincere friendship with an old man who is living his last days. This dying man will be for him the turn of the spinning wheel when he finds this treasure. After an astonishing getaway, the soul scares and spirit wounds will make of him a powerful and unknown Count who meticulously will eliminate successively to every one of those who sent to prison.
As you know the passionate reading who illuminated the mind of our early childhood, found in this case a notable screen adaptation. In this version Rowland Lee makes an impressive direction work supported by a glorious cast which made of this entry a remarkable classic in those far thirties.
Robert Donat reached his artistic peak due this film. He would join with Hitchocok in Thirty nine steps.
A golden gem!

As a fan of World War 2 Movies especially those made during the
period 39/45 I must say that I thought the people who had this
example up for sale should be prosecuted for the pathetic quality
in image , its an insult to ones enteligence . I am all for old
movies to be remembered , but in this case if they could not have
found a better copy to sell ,it degrades the film to a level which it does not deserve . DVD is supposed to be reasonable
quality , this example is disgusting . To have the nerve to offer
it for sale is unbeleivable .
If only we had somethin' to shoot at!.......2005-03-22
Wealthy socialite and, as we later learn, brilliant surgeon Dr. Royce Lee (Elissa Landi) schleps 10,000 miles to the Philippines to rendezvous with, and marry, Dr. Jan Stockman (Otto Krueger), a pleasant (albeit a tad absent minded and disorganized) jungle doctor. Ominously, CORREGIDOR, a movie named for an island that was the site of a crushing Allied defeat at the hands of the Japanese in 1942, begins its existence as a Somerset Maugham-ish White-Tie Love in the Mango Fields type love story. Anyway, even though Dr. Royce sent an explanatory letter four months ago, the news of the wedding still comes as a bit of a (not disagreeable) shock to Dr. Jan.
No sooner are the nuptials joined then a squadron of Japanese planes darken the air and proceed to make hash out of the doctors' jungle home, wiping out the wedding guests in the process. It's at this point that CORREGIDOR makes it first uneasy transition into action movie mode. The courageous newlyweds begin the six-hundred mile trek to Manila, hiking through jungle sets and bushy back lots, avoiding the Enemy as best they can, until finally stumbling upon a small unit of American infantrymen. A half-dozen or so Enemy enter stage right, half-heartedly fire at the Heroes. The Heroes fire back and saunter off, if that's not too energetic a word for it, and somehow lose their pursuers. The movie will go on to squander the rest of its miserable existence alternating melodramatic and overly complicated romantic subplots (there's a Dr. Michael at Corregidor...) with static and awkwardly staged action sequences. About the only consistent quality in this movie is its lack of continuity.
One saving grace of CORREGIDOR is its willingness, verging on mania, to kill off most of its annoying secondary players. Unfortunately, it kills off one at the end of act two only to have Dr. Royce hand a baby off to her in the middle of act three. Not to be outdone by its melodramatic half, the action sequences also shown a strong aversion to keeping things straight. An Enemy monoplane fighter is fatally shot but it's a biplane that plummets to earth.
To be fair, the movie was released in spring of 1943, about nine months after the real article surrendered. That's a short incubation period for a movie, which may explain, if not excuse, some of its more glaring flaws. This is a pep rally movie, and it gave the viewing public a chance to see one rousing infantry charge (complete with Battle Hymn of the Republic underscoring), the Enemy in disreputable retreat, and a stern scene of American defiance in defeat.
Still, CORREGIDOR is a bad movie, and whatever emotional charge it once carried dissipated long ago. The actors are much better than the material, especially Otto Krueger. I don't recall seeing him in anything else, but he combines the unpretentious amiability of a Jimmy Stewart with the melancholy detachment of a Leslie Howard. Krueger doesn't have their charisma or star power, but his good performance is wasted in this one.
Fans of war movies may find CORREGIDOR moderately interesting.

Description
It's New Year's Eve, Nick and Nora Charles have returned to the West Coast, and the philandering hubby of Nora's cousin has gone missing. Round up the unusual suspects. The stars (plus the four-footed one!), writers and director of The Thin Man reunite for a giddy second comedy whodunit. Myrna Loy is Nora, who by all accounts doesn't scold, doesn't nag and looks far too pretty in the morning. William Powell is Nick, retired from sleuthing but hardly retiring when it comes to a case more scrambled than the 3 A.M. eggs he whips up. And rising star James Stewart leads a tip-top supporting cast. "This is a fine way to start the New Year," Nick says as he springs Nora from lockup. Indeed, it is.

"You wouldn't know them darling. They're respectable.".......2007-06-05
"Did I ever tell you you're the most fascinating woman this side of the Rockies?" -- Nick
"Wait'll you see my other side." -- Nora
William Powell and Myrna Loy returned as Nick and Nora Charles for the first time since "The Thin Man" and set the tone for all the entries in thie most heralded series in film history. "After the Thin Man" was a class "A" production from MGM, with W.S. Van Dyke at the helm and a good screenplay based on an original Hammett story. Nick is drinking his way to San Fransisco as he and Nora ride the rails, first class, shortly after wrapping up the celerated "Thin Man" case.
Onboard the Sunset Limited Nick and Nora pick up right where they left off, and audiences could make believe that two years hadn't passed since they'd fallen in love with the fun-loving couple with a nose for murder. The mystery in this one doesn't quite have the zip of the original, but MGM knew it was the delicious banter of Nick and Nora, placed between scotch and martinis, which audiences were thirsting for. Those fun and charming exchanges are plentiful as Nick reluctantly gets tangled up with a murder on Nora's side of the isle.
There is a fine cast but the story plays second fiddle to Nick and Nora ringing in the New Year while a jealous Asta watches over Mrs. Asta and a litter of puppies. Three murders will occur before Nick gathers all the suspects together hoping someone will slip up and give themselves away in this one. While it takes a bit too long to get there, it's so entertaining no one has had the heart to complain about it in over 70 years.
Everything was top-drawer in this series, from the art direction of Cedric Gibbons to Nacio Herb Brown and Arthur Freed's song, "Smoke Dreams." There is some fun news at the end which teased fans with more to come from Nick and Nora and we still can't get enough of our favorite mystery couple decades later. Fun to watch, and what the movies are all about.
Darling, you have the nicest relatives.......2007-05-11
Dashiell Hammett only ever wrote one novel about Nick and Nora Charles, the wealthy hubby-and-wife detectives. But of course that didn't stop Hollywood from producing a string of Nick-and-Nora mysteries.
The first of these sequels was the solid sequel "After the Thin Man," which takes place only a few days after the original "Thin Man." While it's not as spellbindingly twisty as its predecessor, it is a genuinely good, suspenseful mystery, full of humour and
Nick (William Powell) and Nora (Myrna Loy) are just returning to New York, when they get a call from Nora's bossy Aunt Katherine (Jessie Ralph), who orders them to come over for New Year's Eve. The decrepit, snobby relatives all despise "Nich-o-las," but they aren't above asking him to find Cousin Selma's golddigging husband Robert (Alan Marshal). Nick and Nora manage to track him down -- only a few hours before he's found dead in the street.
Unsurprisingly, Selma (Elissa Landi) is the primary suspect -- although Robert's girlfriend, her lover and her hubby are also prime suspects, as is the gangster he's blackmailing. Though Nick swore "no more cases," he finds himself searching for the clues that could set Selma free -- but which of the people who wanted to kill Robert actually did it?
Sure, without Hammett's story behind it, the story is never quite as brilliant as "The Thin Man." But with that out of the way, "After the Thin Man" is a remarkably seamless and entertaining sequel -- the leads crack wise again and again. And there's even a funny subplot about poor Asta being cuckolded by a Mrs. Asta and very fast Scottie.
The dialogue is fast and sparkling ("We wanna go someplace to get the taste of respectability out of our mouths!"), and the action all takes play in fun nightclubs, stuffy old rich homes, and the sleek mansion where Nick and Nora sleep all day. And the mystery is definitely baffling, with all sorts of oblique clues and personal secrets -- and a murderer whose identity definitely comes as a shock.
Loy and Powell have the same champagne humor that made them famous -- jibes, wisecracks, and lots of love. The other actors (including quirky crooks and creepy doctors) are usually quite solid although Landi flings herself around in an unintentionally funny manner. The standout is then-rising star Jimmy Stewart, who plays a typical role with a brilliant twist.
"After the Thin Man" is a suitable sequel to the first "Thin Man" movie, and a classy, witty whodunnit that will leave viewers twitching until the finale.

The Book, And The Original Film, Aren't Always Better.......2005-08-01
Poor Dashiell Hammett. He wrote a book that became a movie that was better than the book. Lucky MGM. They then made a sequel that was better than the movie. "After The Thin Man" has the zippy, syncopated swingtime score that one would rightly associate with all of the 6 films, but which is absent in the original. (There is also too much music in the second film, pointing out the holes in the plot that was lifted from the original). But, all in all, if you only have tonight to see a Thin Man film, because your gay uncle said you must, and gave you a bottle of good gin to go with it (he was right, you really do want some cocktails on hand) see "After The Thin Man".
This time, they're home (their lawn is the backyard of Coit Tower)and one of their in-laws has disappeared. The battle axe of an aunt (Jessie Ralph) is basically reprising the role she played in another MGM great, "San Francisco" (1936) and it seems that she's wearing the same clothes too; and she wants it kept out of the papers. Like all the Thin Man films, especially the better, first three; the best humor is between man and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Charles, and how they deal with the situations that arise. In essence, they know with whom they will be ending the night, so it doesn't matter to them who stumbles, or sachets-in along the way. Hollywood doesn't make such films, or create such characters today, and to be truthful, as married folks in film, they were stand-outs then. Instead of jealous fits and hand wringing suspense driving the plot, there's a rather cool headed humor based on a boundless and well founded trust between the two, that sparks most of the wit and leavens the plot.
"After The Thin Man" is very entertaining, a true Classic, and an easy evening-in. Anyone trying to build a relationship would profit from watching this film, especially if they try to emulate the reactions of the Nick and Nora, when something goes wrong, or might be. Yet, in the end, it's entertainment, and very well done entertainment, at that.
The best in the series.......2005-01-09
William Powell and Myrna Loy are GOLD as Nick and Nora Charles in this, the very best of the Thin Man Series. The laughs never stop coming, as one-liner after one-liner are exchanged. At times the characters names and their roles can become a bit confusing, but you'll enjoy this film never the less.
Jimmy Stewart also has a nice little role, and is the best of the supporting cast. One of the best scenes in the film is when Nora brings Nick to her family's for New Years Eve. As soon as they enter the living room, one of her aunts says very seriously, "Nora, you poor girl." (none of the relatives are very fond of her husband). Nick later enjoys some quality time with his in-laws, having a conversation with them as they snore (really quite a brilliantly funny scene). Also, for those of you who have seen Mel Brookes films and are quite familiar with the "walk this way" gag (recycled much too much), you'll like seeing it in this film.
The nice thing about After The Thin Man is that, unlike it's predecessor, it is never boring. I sort of thought The Thin Man got off on a slow start, where the second installment of the series gets started off right away. Another scene not to be missed: when Asta almost eats a clue! Nick and Nora go crazy trying to retrieve the info from the dog, who thinks it's all just a game. This a very fun comedy that is not to be missed!!
Best of the 6 THIN MAN movies!!!.......2004-04-28
The very first THIN MAN movie was so popular due to love bickering relationship between Nick and Nora. It was no doubt a treat to see a married couple pick at each other and all the while the love they shared for each other was evident to all. The murder mystery almost takes second place to the bickering between Nick and Nora. Not so in AFTER THE THIN MAN.
AFTER THE THIN MAN devotes the bulk of the story to the murder mystery. Nick, who is still supposedly retired from detective work, gets lured into another case. A relative of Nora's needs Nick to prove her innocent. The case seems iron clad and Lieutenant Abrams, portrayed by Sam Levene is sure who the killer is. Only Nick seems to be able to sift through all the circumstantial evidence and get to the real evidence. Nora dogs his every step as she attempts to convince her family Nick is a good man even if he wears a "blue" collar.
James Stewart, prior to becoming famous, does well as the rejected love interest of the accused murderer. He will do anything to help her...or will he? Penny Singleton, prior to her role as Blondie Bumstead in the BLONDIE movies and her providing her voice as Jan Jetson on the JETSONS, has an interesting role as 1930's sexy street sassy blonde. As she would tell you, she's not illiterate because her parents were married at city hall.
So, while the original THIN MAN was fresh and new AFTER THE THIN MAN has all the dents and dings banged out of the script. It is a much better and much more interesting film. It is my favorite of the six THIN MAN films.
The DVD edition of this film is long overdue.
MORE BRILLIANCE FROM NICK AND NORA.......2004-01-15
The second in the series of Thin Man films and the second best one, just a notch below the first. The story begins just days after the first movie. Nick and Nora have returned to their very luxurious home in California from New York.
They arrive home to find a house full of (uninvited) guests who are there to welcome the couple back home. They attend a Dinner party at Nora's very uptight socialite Aunt. Hilarious watching Nick interact with these old, wealthy step-relatives.
Soon, though, Nora's cousin Selma is accused of murdering her estranged husband and Nick and Nora have to step in to investigate.
This time the Charles celebrate New Years Eve with plenty of drinks at the night club of a small-time hood named Dancer. Nick is joined by a table full of his old friends and ne'er-do-wells in the club all drinking and having a great time.
Sam Levine is very funny making his first of two appearances as Lt. Abrahms. A young Jimmy Stewart is also along as the unrequited love of Selma.
As with the first, the drinks flow freely, particularly in the night club scenes where Nick finds himself the object of affection of a drunken young lady, much to the chagrin of her boyfriend.
Fantastic banter between the two stars as usual. Their chemistry was second to none. Asta is along too.
This was also, I think one of the better mysteries of all the Thin Man movies. Where is the DVD????
Still Meaningful After All These Years.......2004-01-01
Great periscope view of the thirties. Everybody wears a mustach (except the women). Humor still valid. And cocktail- drinking? sheesh! Humor still valid. Good acting. And where does one find a marriage like this? Wonderful. Take me back (altho I wasn't even a gleam yet).
