With sidesplitting dialogue and rampant profanity, <I>Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back</I> reunites Kevin Smith's dynamic duo in supreme lowbrow style. It's the <I>fifth</I> comedy in Smith's celebrated New Jersey "trilogy." Here Quick-Stop potheads Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Smith) wreak vengeance on Hollywood, where Miramax is making a "Bluntman & Chronic" feature inspired by J. and S.B., but without their permission. En route from Jersey to La La Land, Jay and his "hetero life mate" encounter sexy jewel thieves (including the delightful Shannon Elizabeth), a precocious orangutan, a dimwit wildlife marshal (Will Ferrell), and a nonstop parade of in-jokes, harmless (yet controversial) gay jokes, and splendid celebrity cameos. While gently biting the Miramax hand that feeds him, and paying affectionate homage to the <I>Star Wars</I> saga, Smith sheds all inhibitions to give Jay and Silent Bob a stellar sendoff that's nasty, sassy, and undeniably hilarious. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

Description

Packed with stars including Ben Affleck (GOOD WILL HUNTING), Chris Rock (NURSE BETTY), Shannon Elizabeth (AMERICAN PIE), Jason Lee (ALMOST FAMOUS), and more, this wildly irreverent comedy is actor/director Kevin Smith's hilarious finale to the adventures of Jay and Silent Bob that began in CLERKS and ran through MALLRATS, CHASING AMY, and DOGMA! When best buddies Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Smith) discover that a major motion picture is being based on their likenesses, they head for Hollywood to claim the big movie money they deserve. But when the dopey duo learn that they've been cut out of the cash, they set out to sabotage the flick at all costs! Featuring a host of celebrity cameos set to a hot hit soundtrack, Jay and Silent Bob's raucous cross country road trip is a crash course in the rules of the road with a nonstop assortment of outrageous characters that will have you laughing out loud!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Kevin Smith...........2007-05-26

Is the man. If you do not like any of his work (humor) then you should not watch this movie. However, if you can seperate yourself from the type of humor he writes, then you can enjoy the slapshot, twisted, backwards humor he brings to this particular type of movie (series of movies) he has written and acted in. However, most anyone could find something to complain about if you take it too seriously.
I love his work!!!! Clerks II (Two-Disc Widescreen Edition)Clerks (Collector's Series)Dogma (Special Edition)Mallrats (10th Anniversary Extended Edition)Chasing Amy - Criterion Collection

5 out of 5 stars great.......2007-05-22

this is a great and funny movie, but since a lot of the jokes are inside jokes, you should definetley pick up kevins other movies first, clerks , chasing amy , mallrats, and dogma, which all feature jay and silent bob

5 out of 5 stars Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back........2007-01-05

A great film, All-star cast. A fun trip in the life of two great men from the East coast JERESY REWLZ!!! If you liked Mall Rats or Clerks you'll love this movie!

5 out of 5 stars That's what the internet is for. Slandering others anonymously. Stopping the flick isn't gonna stop that. .......2006-12-17

Kevin Smith proved with J.S.B.S.B. that he is no longer just a glorified independent film maker. In past films, Kevin Smith seemed to have a limited appeal, mostly among arm-chair directors (such as myself)who had become jaded with the Hollywood film industry, but with his slap-stick-like middle finger to the movie industry he seems to have branched out and struck a note with the "MTV audience" (10 to 16 year olds). Smith's grade-school humor, delivered mostly by Jay, is nothing new to previous movies, but with the focus on Jay & Silent Bob this humor became more evident AND more inviting to a younger audience.

Nonetheless, Smith has not alienated his core audience who are, "...over and underweight guys who can't get laid." (See Holden McNeil in "Chasing Amy"). The simple visual affects, as in his past movies, are FAR overshadowed by the fantastic dialogue he writes which has Hollywood stars chomping at the bit to deliver. If anything, the only disappointment was a very thin plot. But as he did in Mallrats, for what J.S.B.S.B. is lacking in plot, Smith sure as hell made up for it in laughs.

This movie junkie gives "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" a 5 out of 5.. And if you don't like that then you can get the F#@k out.

3 out of 5 stars Very funny beginning and end.......2006-09-25

Jay and Silent Bob discover that a comic book, Bluntman and Chronic, which was based on their lives, is being made into a movie. They are also introduced to the internet and the many thousands of people posting derogatory comments about the upcoming movie and the comic book. Too stupid to realize these people don't even know them and are commenting on their characters, Bluntman and Chronic. They decide to go to Hollywood to stop the movie from being made.

On their trip Jay falls in love with Justice played by Shannon Elizabeth. She and her three friends convince the guys to steal a monkey from a testing lab as an animal rights protest. The real reason is as a cover so the girls can steal diamonds from a nearby building. After stealing the monkey they are pursued by a federal wildlife marshal played by Will Ferrell.

The middle part with the jewel thieves and stealing the monkey almost grinds the film to a halt, it's that stupid. The beginning and the end however, are very funny. This a self-indulgant film but for me they were the funniest parts. I love inside jokes and people who can make fun of themselves. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are very good as themselves acting in Good Will Hunting 2: Hunting Season, as well as directors Gus Van Sant and Wes Craven. There are a lot of good cameos: George Carlin, Chris Rock, Judd Nelson, James Vander Beek, Jason Biggs and scene stealing from Star Wars legends Carrie Fisher and Mark Hammill.

From <I>The Terminator</I> to <I>Titanic</I>, you can always rely on writer-director James Cameron to show you something you've never seen on the big screen before. The guy may not consistently pen the most scintillating dialogue in the world (and, especially in this movie, he doesn't seem to have a particularly high regard for women), but as a director of kinetic, push-the-envelope action sequences, he is in a class by himself. In <I>True Lies</I>, the highlight is a breathtaking third-act jet and car chase through the Florida Keys. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a covert intelligence agent whose wife of 15 years (Jamie Lee Curtis) finally finds out that he's not really a computer salesman and who becomes mixed up in a case involving nuclear arms smuggling. Tom Arnold is surprisingly funny and engaging as Schwarzenegger's longtime spy partner, and Bill Paxton is a smarmy used-car salesman (is that redundant?) whom Arnold thinks is having an affair with his wife. Purely in terms of spectacular action and high-tech hardware, <I>True Lies</I> is a blast. <I>--Jim Emerson</I>

Description

Arnold Schwarzenegger is special agent Harry Tasker, a top spy in the ultra-secret Omega Sector who also dances a mean tango- although to his neglected wife, Helen, (Jamie Lee Curtis) he's just a dull computer salesman. But while Harry's been busy fighting terrorists, Helen's been gathering secrets of her own. And when their two secret lives unexpectedly collide, Harry and Helen find themselves in the clutches of international terrorists, fighting to save not only their marriage but their lives as well. Packed with non-stop action, spectacular special effects and unprecedented stunts, this "domestic epic" from director James Cameron (Titanic, Terminator 2: Judgment Day) is a rollicking `90's twist on the super spy genre.

3 out of 5 stars Fantastic movie, crappy DVD.......2007-06-18

"True Lies" is one of my favorite action films, being at the same time one of the prototypical mid 1990's action films and a parody of the same genre. It strikes a perfect balance between humor and action throughout the course of the film. It's a must see if you like Arnold.

However, the DVD release presented here is brutal. Do not let the THX certification on the front of the DVD case fool you. The film is presented in 2.35:1 aspect ration, but is not anamorphic widescreen, a format optimized for widescreen televisions. It is presented in letterbox format instead, which means that the picture is much, much worse than its anamorphic equivalent because the black bars at the top and bottom are actually encoded into the video stream. This process leaves less room in the video encoding for the actual image, reducing its quality. Anamorphic widescreen leaves the black bars out of the video encoding, preserving more of the video stream for the actual image and allowing the DVD player and TV to add the black bars if necessary. Since a widescreen TV does not have need for these bars, they can be left off entirely, leaving only the high quality image.

Anamorphic widescreen has been a standard feature of DVDs for years now, so it's easy to forget that not all DVDs have it. Old DVDs are especially suspect on this front. If you have a nice television, the lack of anamorphic widescreen will be very noticeable and distracting throughout the film. Maybe it will be out on Blu-ray soon...

5 out of 5 stars Quirky Not Campy, Clever Not Cliche.......2007-02-02

True Lies is a spy film that doesn't take itself as seriously as The Saint or the newer James Bond films--it borders on campiness, without ever crossing that line. While it gets its chuckles (Jamie Lee Curtis beaning Schwarzenegger with the phone), True Lies also manages to deliver suspense and a healthy dose of blood-pumping action. It's a clever, fun and entertaining movie.

The story revolves around Schwarzenegger who (along with sidekick Tom Arnold) is a Federal agent "deep"-undercover; his wife of 10+ years and his daughter have no idea. When he discovers that his wife is possibly cheating on him, Schwarzenegger plays a practical joke on her that winds up embroiling them both in a real terrorist plot to smuggle nuclear arms into the States.

The action sequences and special effects are all top-notch and the cast is fairly all-star. Even some minor characters who weren't stars then, are now (like Eliza Dushku). If you're one of those people who normally takes exception to Schwarzenegger films, you should know that this is one of his more entertaining roles--but then, Arnie isn't for everyone.

As a fun, original, things-blowing-up flick, with a good deal of humor besides, this is a five star film.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie.......2007-01-17

If you have not seen this movie, borrow, rent, buy, or pay-per-view it.

This is a great action, comedy, suspense, thriller spy movie. As annoying as Tom Arnold can be, he is very good in this one. And Arnold is in top form!

Trust me, this is a good one!

Sunny, happy Torrance (Kirsten Dunst) is the new leader of the Toros, the cheerleading squad of Rancho Carne, an affluent San Diego high school that has lousy football players but one hell of a cheerleading team. National champions, they're the ones who bring in the bodies to the football games with their award-winning moves and sassy grace, and they're poised to take their sixth national cheer title. Torrance's new reign as cheer queen, though, is cut short when she discovers that her snotty, duplicitous forerunner was regularly stealing routines from the East Compton Clovers, the hip-hop influenced cheerleaders of a poor inner city school, and passing them off as the original work of the Toros. Scrambling to come up with a new routine for the Toros--and do the right thing by giving the Clovers their due--Torrance butts heads with the proud and understandably wary Isis (Gabrielle Union), the leader of the Clovers, who wants nothing to do with a rich blond white girl, but does want to get her squad to the championships. Problem is, only one team can take home the national title. Who's it gonna be?

An unexpected box-office hit in the late summer of 2000, <I>Bring It On</I> is a smart, snappy teen comedy that bristles with good cheer (literally) and lively, down-to-earth characters. The story may be fairly predictable (who's going to win the big championship?), but director Peyton Reed and screenwriter Jessica Bendinger have fleshed out their characters with formidable strength and provided them with sharp dialogue. Dunst is a radiant comedian, projecting warmth, determination, sincerity, and a sublime airheadedness, and Union is an impressive dancer and counterpart to Dunst, matching her admirably despite her limited onscreen time. An excellent young supporting cast rounds out the film, most notably Eliza Dushku (Faith of <I>Buffy the Vampire Slayer</I>) and Jesse Bradford (Steven Soderbergh's <I>King of the Hill</I>) as siblings new to Rancho Carne, who become Torrance's best friend and potential new boyfriend, respectively. All in all, a pleasantly surprising and intelligent teen movie. Don't miss the opening sequence, a hilarious send-up of all those high school cheerleading routines you had to sit through at boring pep rallies. <I>--Mark Englehart</I>

4 out of 5 stars Fired Up and Ready!.......2007-05-17

Bring it on! Bring it on is a really good movie. I really enjoy it. It is about cheerleaders that have competitions against each other. I think I like this movie because I am a cheerleader and I am planning on being a cheerleader all the way through collage. So I watch the movie so that I can get an idea of what I will be doing. Because they are high school cheerleaders and are more experienced.

If you are a cheerleader or are going to be one you should really watch this movie. This movie is rated pg-13, it has a lot of cussing and arguing in it so little kid's probably shouldn't watch it.

In the beginning of the movie big red picks captain. I have a goal for high school. It is to be the captain of the cheerleading squad. I really enjoy cheerleading. I have been a cheerleader since [..]. Okay back to the movie. There are two main cheerleading squads that have the most competition between each other. The Clovers and the Toros. The Clovers don't like the Toro's because when big red was the captain she stole the Clovers routines because the Clovers never had enough money to go to competition.

But close to the end of the movie the Clovers got enough money to go. I liked that part because I know how I feel's to be ready to go to competition they not be able to. You are probably like how would you know. Well this year was our first year to get to go to competition, and then a bunch of the cheerleader's parents complained to the principle, about how hard our coaches had been pushing us to get us ready. So he told our coaches that we couldn't go. But I'm encouraging you to watch this movie. If you are a cheerleader or want to be a cheerleader. But first make sure its okay with your parents because it is rated pg-13 and has a lot of cursing and drama. Also if you want to be a cheerleader but you don't like drama I would advise you not to be because there is a lot of drama in cheerleading.

Look out Kirsten Dunst. Here's Eliza Dushku! She took this movie, along with a great cast.

4 out of 5 stars Cheers.......2007-04-10

I loved the cheerleading parts, but the story lines were a little over the top and in-your-face. I suppose the teens would like that O.K., but it gets a little old. The cheerleading sequences make it all worth it, however.

2 out of 5 stars Holds your interest just long enough to disappoint you.......2007-04-02

The clever, sneering cheer that opens BRING IT ON got my hopes up. As the beautiful young women play to the camera, cheering about how they've got it all - and how you would like to either be one of them or have one of them - I thought I was in for a funny, sexy look at the politics of high school popularity and the competition for it. Alas, BRING IT ON slowly winds down to a TV-movie level story where everyone has to win and no one looks bad. Yet it's worth seeing for its strengths, namely the athletic cheers and especially 18-year old Kirsten Dunst's stunningly attractive torso, which BRING IT ON shows aplenty. I don't think there's a midriff-baring outfit available that the fair-skinned beauty Miss Dunst doesn't wear in this film!

4 out of 5 stars BARNUM'S LOVE CHILD.......2007-03-30

BRING IT ON was the first film of Peyton Reed who directed since then DOWN WITH LOVE with Renée Zellweger and recently THE BREAK-UP with Jennifer Aniston, three comedies. I decided to watch this movie with my wife and my two children (9 and 12) and we all had a very good time. Even now, 30 years after, my first souvenir of the U.S.A. is still the vision of a group of cheerleaders practising in the rain near the Boston airport and when I happen to spare some nostalgic thoughts about the Grand Canyon and the desert of Arizona, I sometimes see in my mind, between the cactuses, girls wearing miniskirts and doing strange artistic figures.

Now, if you decide to watch BRING IT ON, you surely know what to expect from this kind of movie. The story focuses on the peculiar world of this sport with its joys, defeats and usual cheatings. Characters are interesting and the bound heart problems of Kirsten Dunst don't spoil the innocent pleasure provided by BRING IT ON.

A DVD zone local idiosyncrasies.

Sultry Eliza Dushku runs for her life in a snug white tanktop, pursued by inbred backwoods cannibals in <I>Wrong Turn</I>. Dushku (<I>Bring It On</I>, <I>Buffy the Vampire Slayer</I>) and a clump of other attractive young people (including <I>Six Feet Under</I>'s Jeremy Sisto and Desmond Harrington of <I>We Were Soldiers</I>) get waylaid in the deep West Virginia wilds by a trio of grotesque mountain men, all given realistic ugliness by makeup artist Stan Winston (<I>Interview with the Vampire</I>, <I>Terminator 2</I>). <I>Wrong Turn</I> is the sort of movie where you know who's going to die by the order they appear in the credits, but fans of the inbred backwoods cannibals genre (<I>The Texas Chainsaw Massacre</I>, <I>The Hills Have Eyes</I>) will find much to savor, particularly the scene in which Dushku and Harrington are trapped under a squalid bed while the inbred backwoods cannibals prepare one of their friends for dinner. Grisly. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

Description

An indescribable nightmare begins when a group of young friends is stranded on an isolated road deep in the Appalachian hills of West Virginia, with no hope of rescue. Desperate and fearing for their lives, the horror surges as they find themselves relentlessly pursued by a force of evil beyond their imagination! Featuring a hip ensemble of up-and-coming young stars, this blood-curdling epic is a shock-a-minute horror rush that will leave you screaming for more!

5 out of 5 stars Mutant Inbred Cannibals= Bliss........2007-03-14

"Wrong Turn" Is one of the most enjoyable recent horror movies I have seen.
Being a huge 70's and 80's slasher fan I crave new movies that live up to my expectations.
I hear people complain we have seen this before!!! Blah blah blah..
UM, No we haven't .Sasher/Horror lovers you know good and well that there are certain formulas that work and some that don't ,this one does!!!
Inbred mutant cannibals ? love it .Have there been other movies with a similar plot ? Yes. So What I loved them as well, stop complaining it isnt rocket science it's a slasher flick.A very enjoyable one at that.
It has good looking people, great kills and great makeup effects.
Nuff said.

4 out of 5 stars Really Good 'Menaced-In-The-Woods' Horror; Definately Recommended.......2007-02-23

"Wrong Turn" is familiar but potent horror material, as a shortcut down a little-used back road strands two cars - one carrying a group, the other a lone passenger - deep in the woods and away from phone lines or normal human habitation, and, unknown to the travellers, in the territory of a long-isolated band of inbred mountain cannibals. This kind of thing has been done a lot, and "Wrong Turn" doesn't re-invent the wheel, it just works that wheel better - much better compared to some of its peers - than 90% of the similar horror movies before or since. If you love the likes of the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" films (especially the early ones) or "The Hills Have Eyes" (original or remake, although the remake's my personal pick) you're going to enjoy "Wrong Turn"

It's not as extreme as most of the entries in the above-mentioned series, but it's not watered-down either; it's direct and violent at times, more focused on suspense at others, hitting a really good balance overall. One of the reasons it's better than much of its kin is that the larger budget (small by today's theatrical release standards; huge compared to many of the more obscure direct-to-video entries in its vein) is that it's able to attempt - and fully pull off - things that many of its peers probably couldn't even try: the cannibal assault on the wooden lookout tower high above the forest, for example. Well acted, great effects, great location for this kind of a movie in the vast, seemingly endless and seemingly so benign green forests; very taut and engaging. No horror fan should miss this.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie.......2007-02-21

This was an excellent thriller. A little horror, but alot of terror. Very enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars Very weird movie........2006-12-05

I give this 4 stars. But it was a very strange and weird movie. The mutants were so freaky looking. I think the special effects guy should get major kudos.

I would give this 3, but the weirdness and creepiness of the movie made it worth the 2 hours to me.

I recommend this highly.

2 out of 5 stars Stay out of these woods..........2006-11-30

As some have already mentioned, we've seen this all before. There is really nothing new in `Wrong Turn' besides the cast and a ridiculous tree hopping scene. That said, to me there was no point to watch this, to make it even. It took the same scenario's of many of the `good' horror films (Hills Have Eyes and Texas Chainsaw for starters) and recycled them into pointless fluff. If it weren't for Dushku being as hot as she is this film wouldn't have been worth the wasted two hours I spent last night, and even then it's a stretch. I don't understand why cannibals have to be mutated and uneducated woodsman who look unhuman and grunt instead of speak. Remember Hannibal Lector? Remember the remake of Texas Chainsaw in 2003? The cannibals where much scarier when they looked like you and me. These inbreds looked so fake it was ridiculous. I gave it two stars for Dushku and the few creative death scenes, especially the one in the trees and the barbwire thing...gruesome as they were, it's a horror film so gruesome is welcomed.

Robert De Niro gets top billing, but young Leonardo DiCaprio is the revelation of <I>This Boy's Life</I>, an astute, often painful drama of growing up in the 1950s Pacific Northwest, based on the autobiographical novel by Tobias Woolf. DiCaprio plays Tobias, a good kid with a bad boy streak but an unwavering love for his divorced mother (Ellen Barkin). "I want to be a better boy," he promises from under a greasy pompadour, and tries to prove it when she marries single father Dwight (DeNiro), a bully who parents through intimidation and humiliation. DiCaprio is magnetic in his first starring role, full of anger, hope, and confusion as he drifts back to juvenile delinquency, and his intensity gives the true story of survival and triumph its charge. DeNiro is frightening and pathetic as Dwight, and Dwight's youngest daughter is played by future star and vampire slayer Eliza Dushku. <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>

If your childhood was idyllic and you had nice, supportive and understading parents, then you just may not get this movie. However, if you were forced to live with one parent who dragged you in to every bad choice, relationship and place, then this film is your life, as it was mine, and you WILL get it,only too well.Tobey Wolff's Award winning true life memoir is so gripping that even Hollywood could not have thought up something this fantastical. This is Leonardo Di Caprio's movie. As riveting as the likes of Chris Cooper and Robert DeNiro are as Ellen Barkin's "bad choices" in life, this film never strays from DiCaprio's amazing spot-on portrayal of a boy who is forced to survive the only way an abandoned child can. This film is not for the squeamish or weak at heart. This memoir-brought-to-the-screen will be therapeutic for anyone who must come to terms with their not-so-ideal childhood.SEE THIS FILM IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY IN THERAPY OR IN SOME FORM OF SUPPORT GROUP.There is a load to be learned from this film.5 stars is simply not sufficient.
Excellent companion films to this would be A LOVING FATHER (France),THE CELEBRATION (Denmark) , THE SEA (Iceland) , PIECES OF APRIL (USA),THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS (USA) and any DICKENS NOVEL!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A+++++Film, Great Story & Actors,.......2007-02-13

This is one film that is superior to the book, although I like the book, too. Robert DeNiro is perfect as the very crude, sometimes funny, but mostly mean step-father. That he can play diverse roles with such conviction is amazing. Saint or sinner, he is always believable. The film captures the late 50's era and the precarious situation of a savvy, wily and very witty teen boy and his divorced & striving working mom realistically...and their journey to what the mother thinks will be a better life. There are both frightening and hilarious incidents...also, much courage and bravery. Ellen Barkin and Leonardo DeCaprio are excellent...so true and believable in their roles. I was rooting for them all the way. The movie led me to read the book, which then led me to read another book by the author's older brother, who went to live with the father rather than the mother and his harrowing experiences. This film should be seen by all troubled teens..I also see it as a warning to women with children who find themselves with an abusive partner. My only criticism is the implication that anyone who stays in a small town like Concrete and works in a factory or with their hands is a loser (not everyone can become a writer/teacher)...the important thing is that one can eventually escape and free oneself from a bad homelife or situation and not let it or other set backs ruin one's future or whole life.

Wow...this was a great movie...I really enjoyed it but I wouldn't let young kids see it...but anyway it was really good...yay...

5 out of 5 stars A new favorite of mine.......2006-08-06

This movie is absolutely incredible. I loved every minute of it. I think it's safe to say that Leonardo Dicaprio is an outstanding actor even at his young age. He and Robert De Niro make a fantastic pair of actors. 5 Stars!

Ah, the sensitive male of the 1990s. He's nowhere to be found in this wan comedy about three divorced dads and the weekend each spends with his kids. It opens with the ritual of the divorced: mothers handing off kids to dads in neutral territory, the local McDonald's. Then the three buddies at the center of this film (Paul Reiser, Randy Quaid, and Matthew Modine) go their separate ways. Reiser is looking for a way to win his ex-wife back (and comes across as a hangdog drip); Modine is the group's womanizer who chases a variety of females, while seemingly ignoring his kid. Quaid has the film's only comedically fruitful role as the group's most cynical member who goes on the world's worst blind date with the hilariously off-the-wall Janeane Garofalo. Harmless, occasionally funny, but unremarkable. <I>--Marshall Fine</I>

4 out of 5 stars Dramatic and funny!.......2007-06-08

It is rare for a film to tell a story which is dramatic and funny at the same time. "Bye Bye Love"'s director achieves this fine balance and delivers great performances from all cast members, especially Reiser, Quaid and Modine. The story evolves around 3 male friends who are divorced parents and who each cope with their situations differently while managing to keep their respective children the center of their individual lives. The story is highly entertaining and touching. A great family movie to watch!

5 out of 5 stars It could happen to you........2007-02-16

A group of divorced couples dealing with life's disappointments. A good clean down home movie that most divorced people can relate too.

2 out of 5 stars Janeane is great, the rest grates..........2006-07-25

As many other reviewers have noted, the scene with Janeane Garofalo and Randy Quaid is hilarious. The rest is a waste of time. Go to the chapter with Janeane, and you'll be alright...

2 out of 5 stars Garofalo is funny.......2006-06-19

The best scene in the movie is the Italian restaurant scene with Janeane Garofalo, using a wry Randy Quaid as her foil when she's not ignoring him. It's the only scene that made me laugh.

The scene with the playboy dad having three women in his home, and the one preceding it when his girlfriend's excessive dinner fails to impress the little kids, are both weak. Playboy dad is not interesting, and that character really shouldn't have been one of the three musketeers of this movie.

The other dad, Reiser, is uncomfortable to watch. His dinner scene with his daughter is good in the sense that it shows how estranged a father can be with his teenage daughter, but that too is uncomfortable to watch. The later scene, up in the treehouse when his daughter suddenly loves him, is completely unbelievable. The fact is, that particular girl would not say those things to her dad. She doesn't love him. She doesn't need him at all. She's done with him.

The stupid bit about Randy Quaid being a talk show star after busting into Rob Reiner's talk show is just dumb. That doesn't happen. If you want to write a cartoon, get Warner Brothers to draw it for you. Have the Road Runner in it, or Bugs Bunny.

The film gives us comfort food at the end, with the trite and meaningless advice to love your kids. The fact is that your kids need love from their father when they are young, but once they hit a certain age, in double digits, you are done. Daddy just becomes the source of cash from then on. Kids in their teens and twenties don't want or need anything but money from dad. Fittingly, I saw this film on Father's Day.

To sum the whole movie up, Janeane Garofalo is funny, Randy Quaid is kind of comfortable to watch although the script gets a little stupid at the tail end, and the other two male leads are just mildly annoying. The script doesn't say anything worthwhile about the subject it took on. But it takes a subject on, so at least that's something. It gives exposure and food for thought on the subject of how a father fits into his family.

4 out of 5 stars Very good overall.......2006-03-27

As I stated in title, this is very good overall. It's a bit 80's-dated and has some cheesy stuff, but very funny as a whole. Also, I think it's a very good movie that sends couples a message about how important it is to stay together for kids sake and how messy life is after divorce. Not an Academy award-winning film, but I think you'll enjoy it.

Aimed at teens with numb senses of humor, <I>The New Guy</I> earns its chuckles mostly by accident. Most of the comedy is DOA, although the cast--especially DJ Qualls in the title role--possesses a modicum of scrappy charm. DJ plays a "blip" on his high school's social radar, briefly jailed for chronic misbehavior and mentored in coolness by a fellow inmate (Eddie Griffin), who becomes the funky "new guy" at a new school, where he's worshipped as a mysterious hipster and attracts the hottest cheerleader (Eliza Dushku). Directed without a shred of inspiration (by a cowriter of <I>There's Something About Mary</I>) and looking like a drab 16-millimeter industrial film, the movie would be a waste of time were it not for its abiding cheerfulness, rock-star cameos (Henry Rollins, Gene Simmons, Tommy Lee), Lyle Lovett as DJ's dad, and a fresh cast that <I>almost</I> makes this lowbrow mess worthwhile. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

5 out of 5 stars Funny Movie.......2007-05-02

It is really funny, especially if your looking for something mindless....some popcorn for the brain....when you need to unwind and don't want something too serious etc.

4 out of 5 stars A guilty Pleasure.......2007-01-11

I like the New Guy. It has everything in it to be a dud and it kind of was at the box office. It is however a funny and predictable movie but enjoyable.

Dizzy Harrison(Qualls)is a loser and having a terrible senior year. He gets himself expelled by doing some crazy and fairly entertaining acts. He gets trained by his prsion inmated(led by Eddie Griffin)and sets off to his new high school to rule it. He quickly does and falls for the lead cheerleader Danielle(Dushku). She has a thing for "Gil Harris" as he's known at his new school. The movie then becomes the cliche teen movie it is as Dizzy is faced with the moral problem of being who he really is or losing everything he's worked so hard for. Geesh I wonder how it ends.

I like DJ Qualls. He's such a weird looking guy you can't help but like him. His best movie is still Roadtrip, but he does alright in his leading role here. His dancing is pretty hilarious. He's a funny guy and doesn't disappoint.

Eliza Dushku is gorgeous. Her dancing for her two minutes makes the movie for me. She's likeable as well. She's kind of a stiff in this flick, but that can be blamed on the poor writing.

It's a fun predictable movie. It's not as raunchy as alot of the teen movies so younger crowds can watch it. It's a good movie I'm not embarrased to say I own it. Check it out and enjoy yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely hilarous!.......2006-03-26

My family and I accidentally found this on regular cable tv, and loved it so much, we came to amazon to buy it. I was shocked that none of us remembered any trailers or ads for this movie. It is incredibly funny, for anyone above age of 12.

5 out of 5 stars The New Guy.......2006-01-23

Whenever this guy Dj Qualls is the funny character in the movie, expect it to be funny/stupid. Just the way he looks makes me laugh seriously. This guy is a nerd at the beggining of the movie, then ends up being the cool guy at the end lol. Its funny, all kinds of things happen during the movie to get him where he wants. Definately check this movie out. I havent watched it in sometime so I dont remember it that much, but I remember it being real funny.

4 out of 5 stars Cameos Galore.......2005-09-02

This is a funny movie as is, however, what makes this movie so great are all the Cameos in it (mostly by Music Artist). From Henry Rollins playing a prison warden, to Gene Simons playing a preacher, to Lyle Lovette play Qualls' father, to Vanilla Ice playing an ex-bouncer working in a record store, this movie will keep you laughing. Granted it does take place in High School and geared for the high school/college crowd, it should entrain most everyone 35 and under.

3 out of 5 stars Not what you expected..........2007-04-04

As others have noted, all 3 movies are labeled "Anamorphic Widescreen" on the main cover. I found that my experience differs somewhat from the others, as in my version, I get letterbox True Lies, letterbox Commando, and what looks like anamorphic widescreen for Predator. I'm saying this based on opening it in a window on the computer, and the actual movie seems to have the 16:9 ratio (with no additional black bars on top and bottom). My only explanation is that perhaps they got so much criticism for the first batch that had the P&S version, they fixed that. Unfortunately, True Lies and Commando are still simply letterbox.

I also bought the action pack that includes 6th day and last action hero, where last action hero is P&S. For some reason, it seems these collection packs are very unreliable. The covers are misleading, and I also find it interesting how they are mastered. 6th day for instance had p&s menus, but when you start the movie it is actually anamorphic widescreen (relief..). There were similar issues in this celebrity pack. (Menu's etc different format than main title).

However, I still give it 3 stars since it does not look like you could get True Lies and Command in Anamorphic anywhere else either, plus I paid 9.95... True Lies is also in my opinion a real 'classic' in the action adventure category. Hope it gets released on bluray/hddvd... (looks like it exists on d-vhs for those few that have a player of that type..)

1 out of 5 stars You don't get what you think you're paying for........2007-02-14

True to the other reviews listed here--NONE of these movies are anamorphic. It says they are on the outer box, and each printed label for each movie inside the box swears they are anamorphic as well. I've tried six (!!) different versions of this box set--all have been the same, so it's not just a case of a bad run or two slipping past QC. I even wrote Fox directly and they simply said "we aren't aware of any widespread problems with these titles"...which means they've pretty well washed their hands of fixing this rather glaring error. Beware if you were looking to upgrade your existing non-anamorphic transfers of True Lies and Commando--neither are here, and Predator is even worse with a shoddy FS transfer!

1 out of 5 stars True Lies indeed - a total ripoff.......2007-01-02

The other review is intirely correct. I wish I had kept the receipt for this.

Not only are none of them anamorphic, Predator is indeed pan-and-scan. When you start the movie, it even give you the "This filmo has been modified to fit your TV screen" disclaimer. It then goes in to be one of the worst looking DVD transfers I've seen.

there should seriously be a class action lawsuit for this release, because all of the DVD packaging says "Anamorphic Widescreen" on each disc. Not only is is not Anamorphic, Predator is not even Letterboxed! Not that that would make me happy.

These movies are simply not watchable on a widescreen television, and a waste of money.

This is false advertising, plain and simple, and someone should be held responsible.

1 out of 5 stars Big Disappointment........2006-07-07

I actually ordered this set from another provider, and was so disappointed that the advertised "anamorphic widescreens" were not. After two sets from that provider were the same, I was checking Amazon. Now I am afraid there is no hope.
I don't understand how this can be! The MAIN BOX and EACH INDIVIDUAL BOX are marked as ANAMORPHIC WIDESCREEN (Enhanced for 16x9), but True Lies and Commando are not. The WORST is that Predator is PAN AND SCAN... not any form of widescreen! I already own these movies in the old style widescreen. I can't figure out how this could occur.

4 out of 5 stars A Nice LIttle Film.......2007-05-22

For curious movie buffs, "Race the Sun" is a blend of "Breaking Away", "Walkabout", and "Summer School"; making it quite unique and considerably better than its rating. It's neither ambitious nor technically brilliant; in fact the cinematography somehow manages to NOT capture the inherent scenic beauty of a series of Hawaiian and Australian locations. But the casting and directing are solid and the story has so much charm that you don't mind it being corny and predictable.

Halle Berry and James Belushi play teachers at a Hawaiian technical high school who reluctantly sponsor a team of students building a solar-powered car. "Race the Sun" was inspired by a group of Hawaiian students who actually entered the World Solar Challenge in 1980. The film would have been better if the cartoonish corporate villain had been replaced by some actual scientific explanations and a bit of background on the race itself. Speaking of cartoons, the solar cars look like something out of "Wacky Races" but there is no sign of Penelope Pitstop in this entertaining race.

The school is in Hawaii, which makes for some interesting cultural details (as does the race's Austrialian setting), but for viewer identification purposes the settings could be anywhere.

Thankfully the film avoids a couple of obvious traps. Berry and Belushi end up liking and respecting each other but there are no obligatory romantic sparks between them. Likewise for Casey Affleck and Elisha Dushku (who plays his step-sister).

Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.

2 out of 5 stars Not terrible.......2007-02-26

This movie was "okay" but if I hadn't been from Hawaii, I doubt if it would have held my interest. If you are from Hawaii, don't expect all the characters to be authentic - seems like they had mainland actors trying to act like locals. The acting and the script were sub-par. Fortunately, I watched on TV so I could turn away whenever the racing part was not on. Who wants to watch typical adolescent conversations if they can avoid it? This is one of those stupid PG movies that will not hold an adult's interest but they throw in some bad words and a middle finger so you wouldn't want your kids to watch it.

5 out of 5 stars superb.......2007-01-21

I teach science and this is entertaining and deals with science and science fairs, the kids love it and it is inspirational. The students (I have 6th graders) look up the world solar challenge (which is still going on) and the Kono Poly team who is still competing, on the internet.

1 out of 5 stars Good music, Bad dialogues and Cliche Cliche Cliche..........2006-07-22

I'm simply amazed at the reviews this film has received so far; nearly 5 stars??? You gotta be kidding!
Race the Sun was quite a disappointment, considering the makeup of the cast: Halle Berry (who is GORGEOUS), James Belushi, and Steve Zahn.
The movie brings to the screen the story of several Hawaiian High School kids that in trying to put together a high school project end up participating in a Cannonball Run type race in Australia.
The acting is surprisingly (!) weak, the humor and the dialogues are way below average, while the plot is just bearable, and then there's the great locations; Hawaii and Australia...
It seems as though the actors/directors/producers went to the isles on vacation separately, while there they met up with each other at the hotel lounge over Pina Coladas, and then decided, on the spot, to make the best of their stay by doing a quick and easy film on the side for some extra cash/spending money.
In short:
Belushi's character was next to non-existent and really not the great; he was unexpectedly plain and bland.
Halle Berry and Steve Zahn were given terrible lines. What a waste of talent...
Most of the kids' (especially the girls) acting was sad, with the exception of Casey Affleck who seems promising.
So it's a weak plot, terrible dialogues, bad acting, a great setting, wonderful music, and a good cast, which when put together fail to take off.
The potential for a decent movie was definitely there.
In a nutshell, it's an ok movie if you're under 13 and/or are heavily intoxicated, and that's about it; no masterpiece here... Wait till they show it on TV.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2006-03-01

I have enjoyed this movie, I have been looking for this movie for awhile. All the movies that I have bought are the movies that I love and have not been able to find in the stores.
