Steven Spielberg had a banner year in 1993. He scored one of his biggest commercial hits that summer with the mega-hit <I>Jurassic Park</I>, but it was the artistic and critical triumph of <I>Schindler's List</I> that Spielberg called "the most satisfying experience of my career." Adapted from the best-selling book by Thomas Keneally and filmed in Poland with an emphasis on absolute authenticity, Spielberg's masterpiece ranks among the greatest films ever made about the Holocaust during World War II. It's a film about heroism with an unlikely hero at its center--Catholic war profiteer Oskar Schindler (Liam Neeson), who risked his life and went bankrupt to save more than 1,000 Jews from certain death in concentration camps.

By employing Jews in his crockery factory manufacturing goods for the German army, Schindler ensures their survival against terrifying odds. At the same time, he must remain solvent with the help of a Jewish accountant (Ben Kingsley) and negotiate business with a vicious, obstinate Nazi commandant (Ralph Fiennes) who enjoys shooting Jews as target practice from the balcony of his villa overlooking a prison camp. <I>Schindler's List</I> gains much of its power not by trying to explain Schindler's motivations, but by dramatizing the delicate diplomacy and determination with which he carried out his generous deeds.

As a drinker and womanizer who thought nothing of associating with Nazis, Schindler was hardly a model of decency; the film is largely about his transformation in response to the horror around him. Spielberg doesn't flinch from that horror, and the result is a film that combines remarkable humanity with abhorrent inhumanity--a film that functions as a powerful history lesson and a testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the context of a living nightmare. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

4 out of 5 stars A movie that will change your life........2007-06-18

Schindler's List, directed by Steven Spielberg, is a film about the Holocaust. This movie will break your heart and change your life.

So what's this movie about? This movie is mainly about the Holocaust with a side story about a man named Schindler. Schindler was a German who knew Nazis in higher power. He used his good standing to help Jews. He owned a factory and recruited Jews to work for him so that they wouldn't have to go to concentration camps.

What's to like about this movie? First of all, aside from a little girl's coat, most of this movie is in black and white. Also, there's a ton of detail in terms of costumes and props. The realism as well as the camera work are a huge plus. Second, it's EXTREMELY emotional. You see everything. From people getting shot to dead bodies being burned, Spielburg doesn't hide anything. The one scene that truly had me in tears was when a trainful of Jews were squished together in the extremely hot weather. Schindler persuades the Nazi soldiers to spray them with firehoses. You can see one person drinking the water that falls down from the top of the train. It made me realize that these people were treated like animals, not human beings.

What's not to like about this movie? The reason for the 4 stars rather than 5 is because the big plot of this movie was to show how the Jews were treated during the Holocaust. If you're like me and you've studied books and watched movies about this subject, not a lot of what happens in this movie will surprise you. For the average person, this movie will completely shock you and have you in tears. The only thing that was new to me was Schindler's story.

This is a movie that EVERYONE needs to watch. There's a ton of nudity and violence so I would hold off on letting young kids watch this but adults will be completely enthralled.

    5 out of 5 stars Necessary.......2007-06-16

I rate this movie 9.5/10 or 5 stars. This movie is among the 1000 Best Movies in DVD's by Peter Travers and in the Top 10 list of Best American Movies Ever. The movie won several Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Director. Steven Spielberg directs this movie 10 years after he read the book for the first time and was completely fascinated with the story. As a Jewish himself, he brings to the screen the story of those Jews who survived the Holocaust thanks to one man -Oskar Schindler-, who gave them the opportunity to work in his factories during the end of World War II. The movie shows the brutality of the Nazi army against the Jews, and how they were being killed at different Death Camps (Auswitch, etc.). The movie is based on true facts collected after the testimony of many people who experienced the Holocaust and survived. The movie is rated R for obvious reasons and it is very difficult to contain the tears. This DVD Collector's Gift Set edition is absolutely wondeful, including a special plexiglas casing, a picture book showcasing images by photographer David James with a foreword by Spielberg, the Original Soundtrack by the Oscar winner and always superb John Williams, and a rare limited edition senitype individually numbered and made from a actual film frame from the movie. (So the price it's just a bargain with all of that!). I want to say that, despite not being a Jewish nor coming from a country involved in World War II, I feel absolutely moved by the story told here and I have enormous respect and empathy for the Jewish community and for all the atrocities they have gone through their history. This is a necessary movie that needed to be done and needs to be seen by as many people as possible, so we don't make the same mistakes in the future. We are all human beings, and we all deserve to be treated with respect and dignity, regardless our religion, ethnicity, race, social status, sexual orientation, etc. Unfortunately today, we are still witness of so many intolerance and bigotry that makes me feel embarassed and very sad. We all should work together for human peace, love and understanding among all peoples from all countries in the world. This movie helps people understand how important it is to know each other and understand each other, so ignorance and hatred does not govern our lifes.

P.S. If you like my review vote YES. You can read all my other reviews if you wish to. I modestly write them to help people form an opinion about movies, music and books, but if nobody reads them (if you don't vote I do not know if you did) there is no point in writing them.

    5 out of 5 stars a whole new language.......2007-06-04

Stephen Spielberg's SCHINDLER'S LIST is simply the finest motion picture ever made.

The story brings us face to face with the most organized evil of which humanity has yet proven itself capable. Spielberg's direction and performances of Liam Neeson, Ben Kingsley, and Ralph Fiennes attain that level at which matters are simply beyond improvement. One merely stands in awe.

After viewing the LIST for just the second time since its debut in 1993, this reviewer can think of no more adequate response than the exhortation to buy, rent, view, and then bow silently or in prayer before the fact of evil and the potency of good.

Sadly, it takes a wickedness so vile as to require its own language to occasion a work of art so noble in its conception and execution that language fails to describe it.

'The LIST', as Kingsley's Yitzhak Stern says with a different intent, 'is an absolute good.'

A movie that only true horror buffs could love, <I>Army of Darkness</I> is officially part 3 in the wild and wacky Evil Dead trilogy masterminded by the perversely inventive director Sam Raimi, who would later serve as executive producer of the popular syndicated TV series <I>Hercules: The Legendary Journeys.</I> Raimi's favorite actor, Bruce Campbell, returns as Ash (hero of the first two Evil Dead flicks), a hardware-store clerk who is magically transported--along with his beat-up Oldsmobile and a chainsaw attachment for his severed left forearm--to the brutal battlefields of the 14th century. He quickly assumes power (who else in the Middle Ages packs a shotgun and a chainsaw?), and unites his band of medieval knights against the dreaded Army of the Dead. Raimi gleefully subverts almost every horror-movie cliché as he serves up a nonstop parade of blood, gore, and vicious sword-bearing skeletons--an affectionate homage to animator Ray Harryhausen's classic <I>Jason and the Argonauts</I>. The frantic action is fun while it lasts, but even at 80 minutes <I>Army of Darkness</I> nearly wears out its welcome. You know that Raimi can maintain the mayhem for only so long before it grows tiresome, and fortunately this madcap movie quits while it's ahead. --Jeff Shannon

1 out of 5 stars Without Embeth Davidtz, this movie is garbage.......2007-04-12

The only thing reedeemable about this movie is the beautiful Embeth Davidtz, without her, the movie is pathetic. Honestly, this movie is one of the worst I ever witnessed. "The Mummy" doesn't even equal its patheticness, and that is saying something!!

1 out of 5 stars WORST MOVIE EVER!.......2007-03-29

Apparently for some reason, everyone loves this movie. They say watch it with fun friends. I did. It was so bad. There is no plot, it goes from one thing to another with no explanation. Unless you don't know a good movie from a bad one, don't get this. The "comedy" in it is so repeatative. He fought the mini version for it seemed like 10 minutes and he fought the deadites in the well for another half hour. The phrase it's so bad it's good don't even apply. It passed that point on how bad it is. The action is horrible, and you shouldn't waste your money or your time on the "greatness" this movie supposedly has. Disgrace to movies and horrible spin off of an H.P. Lovecraft theme.

3 out of 5 stars Great movie - bad transfer.......2007-02-28

I got this one mainly for the commentary track. The quality of the print was hit and miss. Yes, I know they added 15 minutes of footage from various sources, and that would account for some of the inconsistancy of the quality of the print, but there were other parts that are in the standard 82 min. version that just looked awful here. The Universal release isn't the long version, and there are no extras, but IMO the print was better. I understand the Boomstick edition looks even better, though I haven't seen it. Anchor Bay seems to have a history of using bad prints for their DVD releases, and this one would seem to fall into that category. I would recommend this for extreme fans only - just for the commentary, which is pretty good.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent, legendary.......2007-02-15

A legendary film. A must for the horror movie lovers that can also laugh of the gender.

    5 out of 5 stars I have not read the book....AND I AM GLAD!!!.......2007-06-18

Excellent..superb..well acted..well scripted..dark and brooding......I could go on and on! We review FILMS here at Amazon...not the book from which the film came! As a film, Patricia Rozema's adaptation of Jane Austen's MANSFIELD PARK stands on it's own as a stinging, satirical view of the life and times of one Fanny Price in 1806 England. All that is Austen, the "advantageous alliances" that are made through marriage, scandals that could kill a family's reputation, the pecking order of sons for inheritance, and the heart as the moral compass and guide are all here, and brought to the screen with great effect infused with a little bit of naughtiness and innuendo. This retelling of MANSFIELD PARK is so interesting and wonderfully reconceived that it far outweighs the BBC version for it's fresh and new characterizations of Fanny and the Bertrams and the Crawfords.

What I really like about this MANSFIELD PARK is Rozema's clever weaving of the English Slave Trade into the fiber of the film. No doubt this WAS THE hot topic of the time as in 1807 the trade of the Middle Passage WAS abolished in England.(See the current film AMAZING GRACE)Yes,people who sought their fortunes in it DID turn "to tobacco",which was the trade simply continued in America!!!

As far as performances...they are OUTSTANDING. Harold Pinter as Sir Thomas was played with great complexity and the late Sheila Gish as Fanny's Aunt is one of the best comedic turns yet for an Austen adaptation!

Lesley Barber's soundtrack is lush, romantic and also full of witty motifs to propel the action.

This MANSFIELD PARK is full of fine direction, sets, costumes and modern sensibility that makes the timeless Austen all the more compelling. The film never lags and is quite clever. 5******'s for Rozema's Austen!

4 out of 5 stars If You Don't Mind a little Affection between Cousins.......2007-05-24

I am always challenged in finding any kind of romance in the characters of Mansfield Park. They are cousins. Back in Ms. Austen's day, this was cool. To me, it is SO not.

This telling of the story, however, is really fun. I love the dramatic pauses at the end. I love the nasty Mrs. Norris. I love the artful Crawfords and the artless Edmund. Most of all, I LOVE Fanny, the smart creative Fanny that is presented in this movie. She totally makes the movie.

    4 out of 5 stars Most enjoyable.......2007-05-15

Most Janeites will disregard this film as not being true to the novel and claim the actors are too "pretty." I however, think this film is strong enough to stand on it's own without having to be completely true to the original. The characters are strong, the acting honest and raw, and Fanny is very funny, in a very Jane Austenesque subtle, ironic way. I am glad to own it.

4 out of 5 stars Great for romantic movie lovers, not so good for Austen purists.......2007-05-12

I wouldn't call myself an Austen purist, but I definitely compare the books with the movies I watch. For purists of Jane Austen's novel, this movie really tears the book apart substituting characters and cutting some out completely. But as a movie, Mansfield Park is one of my favorites. Most of the more recent Jane Austen adaptations really stole my heart in the movie category and this one was no exception. The heart of Jane Austen's story is still there and, as we all know, no one can write about love and romance quite like Jane Austen.

So purists: Beware! Dramatic and Romantic movie lovers: Check this one out!

4 out of 5 stars It is difficult to put Austen's work to film... .......2007-05-11

I always anticipate the difficulty of a relatively short film (2 hours or under) being able to fully bring to life the characters of ANY complex and beloved novel. Aside from maybe the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice, very few movies who aspire to bring Jane Austen's novels to life ever do. That being said. This movie is a piece of art in its own right, and also should be seen as such. I enjoyed this film. And while it did take many liberties, I still feel it was a genuinely well done movie. I LOVE Jane Austen's novels, for she was a woman entrenched in her time but also ahead of her time. I don't think she would take her stories to be sacrosanct, as many of her admirers and critics do. I enjoyed this cast and what the director did with the story. I was endeared to this Mansfield Park and the world that was created in it.

Featuring a blowzy, winningly inept size-12 heroine, <I>Bridget Jones's Diary</I> is a fetching adaptation of Helen Fielding's runaway bestseller, grittier than <I>Ally McBeal</I> but sweeter than <I>Sex and the City</I>. The normally sylphlike Renée Zellweger (<I>Nurse Betty</I>, <I>Me, Myself and Irene</I>) wolfed pasta to gain poundage to play "singleton" Bridget, a London-based publicist who divides her free time between binge eating in front of the TV, downing Chardonnay with her friends, and updating the diary in which she records her negligible weight fluctuations and romantic misadventures of the year. Things start off badly at Christmas when her mother tries to set her up with seemingly standoffish lawyer Mark Darcy (Colin Firth), whom Bridget accidentally overhears dissing her. Instead she embarks on a disastrous liaison with her raffish boss, Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant, infinitely more likeable when he's playing a baddie instead of his patented tongue-tied fops). Eventually, Bridget comes to wonder if she's let her pride prejudice her against the surprisingly attractive Mr. Darcy.

If the plot sounds familiar, that's because Fielding's novel was itself a retelling of Jane Austen's <I>Pride and Prejudice</I>, whose romantic male lead is also named Mr. Darcy. An extra ironic poke in the ribs is added by the casting of Firth, who played Austen's haughty hero in the acclaimed BBC adaptation of Austen's novel. First-time director Sharon Maguire directs with confident comic zest, while Zellweger twinkles charmingly, fearlessly baring her cellulite and pulling off a spot-on English accent. Like <I>Four Weddings and a Funeral</I> and <I>Notting Hill</I> (both of which were written by this film's coscreenwriter, Richard Curtis), <I>Bridget Jones</I>'s stock-in-trade is a very English self-deprecating sense of humor, a mild suspicion of Americans (especially if they're thin and successful), and a subtly expressed analysis of thirtysomething fears about growing up and becoming a "smug married." The whole is, as Bridget would say, v. good. <I>--Leslie Felperin</I>

    Description

Academy Award(R) winner Renée Zellweger (Best Supporting Actress, COLD MOUNTAIN, 2003; CHICAGO) and Hugh Grant (LOVE ACTUALLY, TWO WEEKS NOTICE) star in a delightful comedy about the ups and downs of modern romance. Bridget (Zellweger), a busy career woman, decides to turn over a new page in her life by channeling her thoughts, opinions and insecurities into a journal that becomes a hilarious chronicle of her adventures. Soon she becomes the center of attention between a guy who's too good to be true (Grant) and another who's so wrong for her, he could be just right (Colin Firth -- LOVE ACTUALLY)! Based on the best-selling book, BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY is another acclaimed crowd-pleaser from the hit makers of FOUR WEDDING AND A FUNERAL and NOTTING HILL.

    5 out of 5 stars I love this.......2007-06-11

I love this movie! First of all I adore Hugh Grant, and his wit hits a homerun in this movie. But, I am a huger Zellweger and Firth fan as well.
Who does not love the way Bridget seems to always mock, and humiliate herself, yet win people over in an instant. She's a true underdog, but a loveable character looking for love...and bullocks....trouble, and moritifying moments always seem to find her. I can watch this movie any day of the week and laugh. Plus, it has a great soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars This movie is a classic .......2007-06-08

You don't have to be into chick flicks to appreciate this movie. I personally am not into the serious romance movies. This one made me laugh, tugged at my heart strings, and made me sigh. I believe this is one of Renee Zellweger's best performances. I never had a crush on Colin Firth until I saw this movie. His performance was outstanding along side with Hugh Grant's whose wit had me in stiches. The sequel was also a fabulous movie that I have yet to purchase. I also like the deleted scenes and take outs at the main menu. A DVD you must add to your collection. You will never tire of seeing it.

4 out of 5 stars Laugh out loud funny for the dating disfunctional.......2007-05-07

Briget Jones Diary is a amusing look at the ins and outs of the dating world for the 30 something generation. A romatic comedy which will having you laughing to the point of tears. Bridget (as brought to life by Renée Zellweger) is a 30 something gal living in London and on the hunt for love, but sometimes willing to settle for sex, and forever psychoanalyzing (and second-guessing) herself we follow her as she tries to figure out what it is she really wants.

"It all began on New Year's Day in my 32nd year of being single," she says sardonically in what is to become the running internal monologue that ties the events in the movie to the entries in her journal.
The story largely concerns Bridget suddenly going from miserably manless (in a hilarious early scene she gets drunk alone at home and sings along to Jamie O'Neal's "All By Myself") to having two suitors Mark Darcy (Colin Firth)and Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant)-- a situation she simply doesn't know what to do with.

I find this movie is a must see whenever im having dating issue. Its almost as if it helps to know that im not the only one who isnt in a perfect relationship package.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite romantic comedies.......2007-04-23

I love this movie. I've traveled to England several times and this comedy epitomizes British humor. Bridget is such an easy character to relate to, a real woman with real problems. We need more characters like her out there, women who have weight issues and can't speak in public. I thoroughly enjoyed the fight scene between Mark and Daniel, it was something that you might see real men who are wimps really doing. This movie is fantastic and I highly recommend it to all women.

4 out of 5 stars and they say nobody writes georgian comedies any more!.......2007-04-19

i was pleasantly surprised upon catching up 6 years later with this chick brit flick. renee zellwegger repays england for vivien leigh being cast as scarlett, and she proves utterly charming in this modern take on a jane austen novel (and arguably better than any of the actual austen-based movies of the past decade). colin firth and even the usually smarmy hugh grant are excellent as her beaux: the boorish gentleman and the smooth bounder. great fun, but i hear the sequel is dreadful, so i shall steer clear.

<I>Bicentennial Man</I> was stung at the 1999 box office, due no doubt in part to poor timing during a backlash against Robin Williams and his treacly performances in two other, then-recent releases, <I>Jakob the Liar</I> and <I>Patch Adams</I>. But this near-approximation of a science fiction epic, based on works by Isaac Asimov and directed, with uncharacteristic seriousness of purpose, by Chris Columbus (<I>Mrs. Doubtfire</I>), is much better than one would have known from the knee-jerk negativity and box-office indifference.

Williams plays Andrew, a robot programmed for domestic chores and sold to an upper-middle-class family, the Martins, in the year 2005. The family patriarch (Sam Neill) recognizes and encourages Andrew's uncommon characteristics, particularly his artistic streak, sensitivity to beauty, humor, and independence of spirit. In so doing, he sets Williams's tin man on a two-century journey to become more human than most human beings.

As adapted by screenwriter Nicholas Kazan, the movie's scale is novelistic, though Columbus isn't the man to embrace with Spielbergian confidence its sweeping possibilities. Instead, the <I>Home Alone</I> director shakes off his familiar tendencies to pander and matures, finally, as a captivating storyteller. But what really makes this film matter is its undercurrent of deep yearning, the passion of Andrew as a convert to the human race and his willingness to sacrifice all to give and take love. Williams rises to an atypical challenge here as a futuristic Everyman, relying, perhaps for the first time, on his considerable iconic value to make the point that becoming human means becoming more like Robin Williams. Nothing wrong with that. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

4 out of 5 stars An Android's Search for the meaning of Life.......2007-04-28

Williams plays Andrew, a household robot of the future, who, through a melted circuit, developes his own personality, and questions his reason for being. While the movie was touted as a comedy (there are very funny bits with Oliver Platt acting as his adopted mentor and `parts improver'), it is more poignant than this.

This film is a very well done study in humanity. Using a supposed inhuman character as the lead character, we are slapped in the face with a reality that has becaome all too common place in our society - the living in fear with not only the unknown, but living in fear because our government tells us we must. In the future, discrimination between races and beliefs is replaced with humans using androids as their focus of hate and rascism.

Andrew the Android (Williams), having become self-aware, learns to hide his uniqueness, in a simple attempt to survive destruction. Not only does he learn to mask his abilities to the public, he is forced to hide his developed emotions, provided through one of Platt's programs. While this makes for a great story, it is a comment on how humans interact in the real world.

As he searches for legitamacy, he demands Platt replace his robotic parts with more humanistic features in a desire to be nothing more than to be accepted by humans.

Centuries pass in this sad tale. Political stances in our so called modern mores are questioned. And in the end (GOD I HATE to give it away...) Andrew discovers love, how painful it can be, and learns that death is the ultimate definition of life.

I recommend this film for those who can stand introspection. If you are looking for a comedy, stop halfway through. The second half will jerk your heart, and hopefully open your eyes to the search that we all live for...the search for what makes us human.

I gave this 4 stars due to the trailers making this a comedy. I love Robim Williams in his serious roles. He has a gift of drawing us into the characters he plays. One of my favorites is `The Fisher King'.

Rent the movie, and be prepared to come to grips with your own feelings about stereotypes.

4 out of 5 stars Android Andrew .......2007-03-30

There's a lot I like about "Bicentennial Man", like the computer animation of the futuristic cities and the change in Robin Williams' robot character. There's a bit that annoys me about it though, a couple of the concepts related to the ending and the ending itself. Bit frustrating, I thought.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome Movie.......2007-03-13

This is one of my all time favorite movies. Robin Williams at his very best. His comedy is dead on and his dramatic acting only gets better and better. This move will make you think, laugh, and cry. Not just a "chick flick". This has something for everyone.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Movie!.......2007-02-26

It's hard to fathom why this movie did so poorly at the box office - it's one of my all-time favorite movies! Thought provoking, intelligent, funny, sweet, romantic, creative, engaging, sad - it has some of everything. One of the things I've always enjoyed about really good science fiction is the fact that it isn't bound by reality, yet feeds your imagination with real possibilities. This is really good science fiction!

5 out of 5 stars Unique and one of a kind movie (5+).......2007-01-28

Personally, I thought this film was brilliant!

When I first saw it a few years back I admit that I didn't like it much, it seemed rather stupid to think that a robot could 'become' human, but on viewing it again years later, I can safely say that I missed the whole point of this film.

Andrew is a robot to begin with, but one with feelings and the ability to learn. He wants to learn, wants to talk, wants to create, and through some mistake when he was being created he can. His unique ability, mixed with his owners kindness and help allow him to grow up like a real human, by learning, having memories, caring about his family etc.

This film shows Andrew's aim to become human, and follows his life from when he first became the 'machine' of the Martin family, to when he finally fell in love with their youngest daughters grand child, and becomes human to die beside her on their death beds.

It is a sad movie, with a few tear jerking parts (especially at the end) and it asks a lot of questions which we don't often think about, like can robots have feelings, can they love, and can they become human? In the end, what does defy whether you are a human or not, is it being born with the right, or can you earn the title.

This is a definite 5 for me. true, it is a very long film and the start can drag on a bit, but it is a beautiful tale that I believe everyone should watch at least once.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars needs no review.......2007-06-10

    this is a phenomenal film.

    everyone should own it.

Cool sets, gory make-up, and frantic energy are given high priority in this glossy remake of William Castle's 1960 haunted-house chiller. The original boasted its "Illusion-O" ghost-viewing gimmick, so this remake's producers--as they did with 1999's <I>The House on Haunted Hill</I>--up the ante on Castle's showmanship by spilling ample amounts of blood, guts, and ghoulish glory. The plot's essentially the same: An impoverished family inherits a luxurious haunted mansion, only this time it's an elaborate, maze-like mechanism of glass, gears, and Latin incantations--"designed by the devil and powered by the dead"--with a cellar full of tormented, undead souls. As the family (including Tony Shalhoub and <I>American Pie</I>'s Shannon Elizabeth) enlists the aid of a psychic (<I>Scream</I> alumnus Matthew Lillard) and a ghostbusting paranormal (Embeth Davidtz), this updated <I>13 Ghosts</I> grows loud and ludicrous, trading shocks for yuks and nuance for nonsense. It's fun, to a point, after which it's just exhausting. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

    Description

A family inherits an elegant steel-and-glass mansion from a deceased relative. The catch is that along with the house comes a slew of ghosts that can be seen only through special goggles.

    3 out of 5 stars wow.......2007-06-01

    One word: INFURIATING.

The decision to show the ghosts in spastic, shakily-filmed snatches could have been a good one if it were done differently, but as it stands it's just obnoxious, jerky and in some cases hilariously stupid looking. (I'm looking at you, Jackal. Hold still! His tic makes more sense once you've watched the ghost profiles, but that doesn't make it look any less silly.) Some of the ghosts barely get any screen time--I resorted to backtracking and pausing several times just to get a good look at them. "Shuttle... PAUSE! Shuttle... PAUSE!" becomes second nature within the first 15 minutes. It's a shame, as the ghost designs are quite well done, especially Linda Blai--err, I mean Jackal. (I kid, I really dig that design.)

I admit, the movie starts out with promise. A distinctive comic-book feel, like ideas siphoned from Ghostbusters and poured into a much darker, sexier shell. Within the first few minutes you're treated to nice camera work and visuals, cool machinery, a really scary-looking ghost and several deaths. There is plenty of beautiful cinematography throughout. Certainly not a complete disappointment.

However, this film's runtime is something like 91 minutes. Everything either happens entirely too fast or is not explained enough to follow well, and by the time I was actually interested in what was going on beyond pausing repeatedly to examine the ghosts, roughly an hour had already elapsed. It's difficult to explain the phenomenon, but it's definitely not good.

I fully recommend the ghost profiles in the extras, though. I'd say those are better than the actual movie.

Three stars for the FX budget and the extremely graphic and clever vivisection of the lawyer near the start of the film. (This bit is good enough that I felt a smile creeping onto my face as it happened but was powerless to stop myself.) Also you get to see Matthew Lillard get bashed in the face, which is worth a full star on its own. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

    3 out of 5 stars Definitely non horror-genre .......2007-01-28

No, no, no - this movie is not scary, just horrific and this film does the cast no favours, the cast are good actors, they honestly are, they just had a completely unbelievable script.

It is not scary in the slightest, the ghosts are totally drab, (i've seen scarier budgies) and the story, though a good idea, is played out terribly.
no offense to anyone who likes this film, but i would not recommend this movie at all.

5 out of 5 stars Kill the French.......2006-12-12

Never has there been a better campaign erected against the wearing of sunglasses indoors. Which is a good thing because you can hurt yourself, but like they say, looking cool ain't easy (however, I digress). Like some sadistic Jenga mansion, "Thirteen Ghosts" kept me biting my nails while sitting on the edge of my seat exuding a stench of cold copper sweat. Tightly scripted, brilliantly cast, boldly choreographed, this could be the film that finally solidifies CGI as an essential vitamin of the cinema -- along with sex, violence and pratfalls, of course. If nothing else, it at least tops any of that neo-New French Fusion Wave drivel or whatever you call it like "Amelie" or "Everything is Illuminated." Blecckkkk!

4 out of 5 stars not scary? so?.......2006-10-18

"Thir13en Ghosts" is the second movie made by Dark Castle Entertainment, who brought us the equally chilling "House On Haunted Hill" remake in 1999. This film is a remake of William Castle's 3-D ghost house romp. This movie opens with some real-life "ghost hunters" hunting ghosts in a wrecking yard, the ghost is very violent, lots of people die. We are then introduced into the Kriticos family, which consists of a father, his daughter and son, and their live-in nanny. Living in a cramped little apartment, they are happy when they inherit their uncle Arthur's glass-walled mansion after his death. Little do they know, Arthur was a ghost hunter, and the basement of the house contains sealed rooms that hold twelve assorted ghosts. When the family goes to see the house one evening, they meet a kooky electrician (who is actually a previous ghost hunter who worked for Arthur). And after entering the house, it seals shut, and begins to shift, hallways disappearing and changing, etc. Turns out this glass-walled "house" is a ghost machine, and as the night progresses, the ghosts below are released from their containment.

This is one of those movies that is really flashy, jumpy, and loud. It uses these qualities as scare tactics, and they actually work in this film. The ghosts in the movie were scary as hell, each of them have a bit of a backstory and a name. The ghosts that freaked me out in particular were The Pilgrimess, The Angry Princess, and The Jackal. All of them were scary in their own ways, but out of them all, those ones stood out to me. The setting for the film was great, and the whole house set was magnificent - all the walls made of glass, glass floors, etc. It looked awesome. The special effects were great, especially the makeup used on the unique ghosts, and it had plenty of startling action sequences. The acting was decent, good enough in the context of the movie. And the realtor's death was probably the best in the whole film, very original and gruesome. I liked how they incorporated the "glasses" theme into this movie. In the original 1960 version, you had to wear actual 3-D glasses to see the ghosts. In this movie, the characters must wear special glasses to see them.

Overall, "Thir13en Ghosts" is a good horror movie. It's not necessarily scary, but it's startling on many occasions and the ghosts in the movie were really creepy and unique, I've never seen ones quite like this in a horror film. Don't expect a suspenseful mystery thriller, but if you like supernatural horror movies that are jumpy and flashy, you'll enjoy this. 7/10.

<I>Shackleton</I> is not a biopic of the great Anglo-Irish explorer but a dramatization of the failed trans-Antarctic expedition of 1914-1916. As written and directed by Charles Sturridge (<I>Longitude</I>), the production, filmed on real ice floes in Greenland, stays remarkably close to the facts, capturing the look of the surviving expedition photos by Frank Hurley (collected in the book <I>South with Endurance</I>) with great fidelity. Kenneth Branagh makes no attempt at an authentic accent but otherwise gives a powerful impression of a most commanding personality. When the expedition ship <I>Endurance</I> became locked in the Antarctic ice, Shackleton vowed to bring every man home alive, and against virtually impossible odds, including a 700-mile journey in an open boat through some of the worst seas in the world, he did just that. This superlative miniseries realizes the story with production values and cinematography that would not disgrace a big-budget feature (<I>South</I>, Hurley's 1919 silent movie featuring some motion-picture footage from the expedition, is also available on video). Intense physical drama, strong performances, and Adrian Johnston's fine score combine here to deeply moving effect, marred only a little by a rushed conclusion. With Roland Huntford, author of the definitive Shackleton biography, as production advisor, this easily stands as the benchmark for all future comparable films. <I>--Gary S. Dalkin</I>

    Product Description

Men wanted for hazardous journey. Small wages. Bitter cold. Long months of complete darkness. Constant danger. Safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in case of success. -Ernest ShackletonThe 27 men who joined his expedition found that Ernest Shackleton was true to his word. They had drifted with the pack ice of the Weddell Sea for ten months, their ship-- the Endurance-- had sunk, and they were castaways in one of the most hostile environments on earth, hundreds of miles from land. And so, with his dream of becoming the first man to cross Antarctica long abandoned, Shackleton set his mind to a far greater challenge: bringing his crew safely home.Based on the detailed diaries and first-person accounts of expedition members, SHACKLETON tells the true story of their extraordinary ordeal, and the death-defying, 800-mile journey in an open boat across the world's worst seas that made their rescue possible. Written and directed by Charles Sturridge (Longitude, Brideshead Revisited), SHACKLETON stars Kenneth Branagh (Henry V, Hamlet) as the legendary explorer.

    5 out of 5 stars What a Man!.......2007-05-14

Great story of Antartic explorers.....lots of history of Antartica. If you are planning a trip there, or just wonder how tough people can be, this is the book for you.

    5 out of 5 stars It's the real deal!.......2007-05-09

This movie is so authentic that this is as close as one can get to actually being there with Shackleton and his crew!! The attention to detail, down to the exact diary notations, as well as the actors selected to play the roles,(they look remarkedly like the actual people!), and Branagh transforming himself into Shackleton,.. well this is a must have for any 'Shackeys' out there!! When Shackleton left for this expedition, his finances were in ruin, his affair with his mistress had been exposed to his wife, he was having episodes of angina, which he covered up as 'sciatica,' and he was dealing with his brother just getting out of prison. Given all these stressors, it is amazing that he rose to the challenge that he did, and makes the story all the more amazing!! Pay careful attention to the scene in the ship where the men are listening to the gramaphone..the recording is actually Shackleton's own voice from his Nimrod expedition!!

    4 out of 5 stars Shackleton.......2007-04-26

I have been fascinated with this story since I was in the third grade, which is nearly fifty years ago now. This is an excellent depiction of the situation and Shackelton's men, but of course the hardest job falls to Kenneth Brannagh to evoke Shackleton's remarkable personality. While he does a good job in most respects, we mostly see a grim Sir Ernest for almost the entire movie, not glimpsing his renowned good humor and optimism until nearly the end. It was this singular characteristic which so captivated and energized those who followed him through thick & thin. What we see here is mostly a commanding leader, which Shackleton certainly was, but on screen here we do not see the qualities which seem to have set him apart from most other leaders.
If you read the accounts of those who were with him (Frank Worsley, the Captain, for instance wrote several books about this journey) you get a much, much different picture of the man than is portrayed here.
Perhaps it is not possible to portray such a thing, as the intangible elements Shackleton possessed are not so easily shown on film.
But it is a very worthwhile film in all respects, incredible hard work so obviously going into it by all concerned.
This is an especially good film to watch if you have read some good books about what happened with these men.

5 out of 5 stars If you think your life is hard, check out the Shackleton Expedition!.......2007-04-02

Several years ago a friend loaned me his copy of the Shackleton expedition. It had about 20 pages of the most incredible photographs along with a narative that held me captive till the last page, even though I knew the ending by reading the preface. I reccommend the book and/or DVD to everyone I know, and it is the next book my book club will read.

It is the true story of an expediton to the South Pole as World War I was breaking out in Europe. The things I remember most vividly are the courage of the crew under unbelievable conditions, and the fact that 150 incredible glass slide photographs survived along with the crew.

Since I only have basic cable TV service, I never saw this film on A&E, or any of the extras on disk 3. It was a real treat to watch a recreation of what my mind visualized while I read Alfred Lansing's book. Of course, as with any film adaptation, some things are left out, which is why I reccommend the book also. The movie starts out a little slow, as Shackleton begs funding for the expedition. Don't give up; it gets better! The movie was extremely well done and captures the intensity and personalities of the characters in a way the book cannot. It is definitely worth adding to your permenent DVD collection.

Don't ignore the extras on disk 3. There is some great history of other Antarctic expeditions and - my favorite - a piece about the making of this film. I found it as interesting as the film itself, as the filmmakers, actors and crew faced their own weather and climate challenges to create this incredible film.

This is a keeper, redeeming, worthwhile. You will remember it for a long, long time. How many other movies or books can you say that about?

Although it received mixed reactions from critics and audiences alike when released in 1998, this supernatural thriller benefits from a sustained atmosphere of anticipation and dread, and its combination of detective mystery and demonic mischief is handled with ample style and intelligence. Under the direction of Gregory Hoblit (who fared better with <I>Primal Fear</I>), Denzel Washington plays detective John Hobbes, who witnesses the gas-chamber execution of a serial killer (Elias Koteas). But when another series of murders begins, Hobbes suspects that the killer's evil spirit has survived and is possessing the bodies of others to do its evil bidding. Even Hobbes's trusted partner (John Goodman) thinks the detective is losing his grip on reality, but the dire warnings of a noted linguist (Embeth Davidtz) confirm Hobbes's far-out theory, and his case intensifies toward a fateful showdown. Although its idea is better than its execution, and the story's <I>film noir</I> ambitions are never fully accomplished, this slickly directed thriller has some genuinely effective moments in which evil forces are entwined into the fabric of everyday reality. Among the highlights is a memorable scene in which Detective Hobbes must track the killer as the evil spirit is transferred between many people via physical contact. Even if the film is ultimately less than the sum of its parts, it's an intriguing hybrid that resides in the same cinematic neighborhood as <I>Seven</I> and <I>The Silence of the Lambs</I> with a cast that also includes Donald Sutherland and James Gandolfini. Included on the DVD is a full-length audio commentary by director Hoblit, screenwriter Nicholas Kazan, and producer Charles Roven. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

I've seen this movie about, oh my, dont remember the last time I seen this movie, but last week I bought. Why? Well, I remember how much I'm a big Denzel fan and how much I was so intrigue by this movie. So I thought, well, I'm going to buy it. I watched it last night. It was like Dejavu (spooky music - ok lame joke) because I remember like it was yesterday. This movie is almost a master piece. This movie has everything that a good thriller should want. When Denzel left the cop shop and was following that old lady and man, and from there was all spooked out. Brilliant! And when the Lady was running and the whole line was touching to get to the Lady . . . Wow??? Awesome Movie! It's not the best thriller, but its up there. I dont think alot of people give this movie a try, but they really should because I still think it was one of Denzel best (script) movies. His best acting, "see John Q" Rent this movie if you dont buy it. Give it a try!!
