Surely even the French, with their legendary love of all things Jerry Lewis, will be sated by the <I>Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis Collection: Vol. 2</I>, a three-disc package containing five comedy-musicals released on DVD for the first time. It would be a supreme stretch to call any of the five films in question (<I>You're Never Too Young</I>, <I>Artists and Models</I>, <I>Living It Up</I>, <I>Pardners</I>, and <I>Hollywood or Bust</I>) a classic, but then, anyone looking for challenging storylines and deep characterizations probably wouldn't be here in the first place. What the films offer instead are various breezy diversions, in the form of Martin, the suave, smooth talking cad and crooner; a parade of lovely young women (Dorothy Malone, Anita Ekberg, Janet Leigh, and Shirley MacLaine among them); some terrific musical numbers that are the highlights of their respective films; and, of course, the antics of Lewis, whose capacity for slap<I>shtick</I> and mugging is apparently inexhaustible. By this time (the mid-1950s), the two had already fit comfortably into their respective personae, with Lewis as the naïve, ingenuous rube and Martin right there to take advantage of him. In <I>Artists and Models</I>, Martin's aspiring painter cops ideas from the frenzied dreams of his comics-obsessed roommate (Lewis, natch) and creates a hit comic of his own, a simple story that's derailed by an absurd and unnecessary subplot involving the U.S. government and some enemy agents. <I>Living It Up</I>, adapted from an earlier musical called <I>Nothing Sacred</I>, finds Lewis cajoled by Martin, his doctor (talk about a stretch!), into pretending that he's suffering from radiation poisoning so they can both enjoy a lavish trip to New York courtesy of a newspaper trying to boost circulation by playing up the "dying" man's plight. <I>Hollywood or Bust</I>, a combination road picture and gentle spoof of the movie biz, casts Martin as a gambler and con man accompanying film fanatic Lewis on a trip to Tinseltown, while <I>Pardners</I> is a Wild West romp ("Jerry Lewis as a gunslinger" about sums it up) and <I>You're Never Too Young</I> puts Lewis totally in his element as he impersonates a 12-year-old boy in order to escape bad guy Raymond Burr. The plots are thin, at best, and the songs are hardly Oscar caliber. Still, the two stars have an undeniable chemistry, and the musical set pieces are highly entertaining, most notably a sort of <I>pas de duh</I> (<I>sic</I>) between Lewis and MacLaine in <I>Artists and Models</I> and an eye-popping, show-stopping dance number in <I>Living It Up</I>. In the end, it all basically comes down to one's capacity to endure Lewis' manic mannerisms (it's worth noting that by <I>Hollywood or Bust</I>, the pair's last collaboration, he's pretty thoroughly upstaged by a Great Dane). If even this cornucopia isn't sufficient, perhaps a move to France is in order. The set contains no bonus material. <I>--Sam Graham</I>

Product Description

LIVING IT UP: The 1954 Martin-and-Lewis romp Living It Up is an amusing remake of the 1937 comedy classic Nothing Sacred. More specifically, it is the film version of the Broadway musical Hazel Flagg, which was based on Nothing Sacred. The heroine of the original undergoes a sex change to become feckless Homer Flagg (Jerry Lewis), who is led to believe that he's dying of radiation poisoning. Manhattan newspaperwoman Wally Cook (Janet Leigh), hoping to improve circulation of her paper, convinces her boss, Oliver Stone (Fred Clark), to fete Homer as a hero with an all-expenses-paid trip to the Big Apple. Meanwhile, Homer learns from local doctor Steve (Dean Martin) that he isn't dying at all. But Steve talks Homer into taking advantage of the celebrity treatment bestowed on him by Wally, and a good time is had by all — until medical specialist Dr. Egelhofer (Sig Rumann) insists upon examining Homer. Highlights include a hilarious bit at Yankee Stadium, and an energetic jitterbug number featuring Jerry Lewis and Sheree North. The handful of songs retained from Hazel Flagg include "Every Street's a Boulevard in Old New York."
YOU'RE NEVER TOO YOUNG: You're Never Too Young is a slapstick-with-songs remake of the 1944 Ray Milland/Ginger Rogers vehicle The Major and the Minor. Dean Martin plays the Milland part, while Ginger's shoes are filled by...Jerry Lewis? Lewis plays an apprentice barber who inadvertently crosses a homicidal jewel thief (Raymond Burr), and equally inadvertently hightails it out of town with the crook's jewels in his possession. Desperate to escape the crook's clutches, and lacking the necessary funds for a train ticket, Lewis disguises himself as a 12-year-old boy so he can travel half fare. He latches onto Dean, a music teacher heading for an all-girls school. After innumerable routines sparked by Lewis's adolescent disguise, the jewel thief catches up with him, leading to a rollicking climactic speedboat chase. Dean Martin has plenty of opportunities to serenade leading lady Diana Lynn (who'd played a supporting role in The Major and the Minor), while Jerry Lewis is in peak form doing his usual "waah-waah-waah" schtick. The original Billy Wilder/Charles Brackett script for The Major and the Minor was reshaped into You're Never Too Young by future bestselling novelist Sidney Sheldon.
ARTISTS AND MODELS: Bearing very little relation to the 1937 Paramount musical of the same name, Artists and Models is a lavish, girl-filled vehicle for the popular team of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. Martin plays Rick Todd, a comic-book artist who is under fire from his publisher (Eddie Mayehoff), who complains that Rick's work isn't gory enough. Lewis plays Eugene Fullstack, Rick's roommate, who while asleep dreams up elaborate comic-book plots and garishly costumed superheroes. Eugene's nightmares help Rick become a success; meanwhile, our two heroes romance their luscious neighbors, artist Dorothy Malone and rambunctious model Shirley MacLaine (who during one song wrestles Eugene to the floor and sits on his chest!) Eugene's overworked imagination somehow attracts the attention of a group of Russian spies, who attempt to abduct Eugene during the annual Artists and Models Ball. Director Frank Tashlin uses Artists and Models as an excuse for some of the wildest sight-gags seen in a mid-1950s film. At one point, the director contrives to stuff a gag in Shirley MacLaine's mouth. Tashlin also exhibits his ongoing fascination with female breasts and legs by giving ample screen time to the natural attributes of co-stars Anita Ekberg and Zsa Zsa Gabor. One of the best of the Martin/Lewis efforts, Artists and Models suffers only from being about 20 minutes too long.
PARDNERS: This Dean Martin-Jerry Lewis romp is liberally based on the 1936 Bing Crosby film Rhythm on the Range. Set around 1910, the film stars Lewis as the pampered son of female tycoon Agnes Moorehead. Yearning to return to the Wild West where his father was a famed peacekeeper, Lewis purchases a prize bull, destined for the ranch inherited by rodeo star Dean Martin. It so happens that Martin and Lewis' late fathers were "pardners", so Martin takes it upon himself to protect Lewis from the various and sundry tough hombres in the region. Through a series of bizarre plot convolutions, Lewis gains a reputation as a rootin' tootin' gunslinger, and in his hubris he decides to round up a gang of outlaws headed by Jeff Morrow. As a result, he nearly gets himself blown to smitherines, but Martin shows up in the nick of time to rescue Lewis and help him capture the bad guys. Lori Nelson and Jackie Loughery supply the film's peripheral romantic angle. Pardners ends with Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis turning to the camera and promising that they'll keep on making pictures for their faithful fans; ironically, the team was breaking up even while the cameras were turning.
HOLLYWOOD OR BUST: Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis made their last joint film appearance in the girl-filled musical Hollywood or Bust. The thinnish plot finds inveterate film fan Jerry making a cross-country journey to Tinseltown for the purpose of meeting his favorite screen star, the buxom Anita Ekberg (the film's title, need it be added, has a double meaning). Dean goes along for the ride, hoping to expand his bankroll during a Las Vegas stopover. The boys are joined by a third traveller, an enormous Great Dane named Mr. Bascomb; along the way, the trio becomes a quartet when pretty Pat Crowley hitches a ride. The finale takes place in Hollywood, naturally, as Jerry wreaks havoc at a film studio which looks suspiciously like Paramount. All reports indicate that Hollywood and Bust was an unhappy shoot, with Jerry Lewis behaving so obstreperously that director Frank Tashlin ordered him off the set and told him to go home until he learned to behave himself; to this day, Lewis cannot bring himself to watch the film. Happily, the animosity between the two stars never comes across on screen, and as a result Hollywood or Bust is a most enjoyable diversion.

5 out of 5 stars Two Masterpieces on Here, Unbeatable price.......2007-06-18

HOLLYWOOD OR BUST and (especially) ARTISTS AND MODELS are two of the greatest films of the 1950s. The director of both, Frank Tashlin, was the Hitchcock of lowbrow social satire. Both are at times visually and compositionally amazing.

The other three films are reasonable (at least LIVING IT UP), but Norman Taurog was pretty much a director-for-hire.

The tension between the two stars, for me at least, only makes these films more interesting, as it embodies the dissolution of post-classical Hollywood myth-making.

5 out of 5 stars great transfer quality! very good value/package!.......2007-06-09

Hi Folks
these films look fabulous!! Many of them are VISTAVISION which was the absolute highest grade quality/size negative format from the 50's era.
I'm not going to deduct stars for what Isn't in this set...that's lame...this is 5 very well presented movies with many many laughs..some great songs and loads of fun...for a bit over $20? Geeez , how can you resist?
I can't explain Martin & Lewis to you ...if you don't know their work..start with volume 1 then this one..and don't avoid the Legendary Jerry set as its wonderful as well. Kids out there? Think Adam Sandler invented that character of his? watch Jerry...
and Dean is still the big brother we all wished we had..cool as heck and very protective of his idiot friend.

5 out of 5 stars Paramount did a great job with this set.......2007-06-07

Martin & Lewis shine in this beautifully put together set of these fun and glossy movies. It's a treat, especially considering that 4 out of the 5 movies are produced in the great widescreen format of VistaVision - so the visual clarity is especially acute, plus all 5 movies are in color which is made fine use of, particularly in the whimsical 'Artists and Models'. The design of the DVD box - which opens up like a triptych - is excellent and includes reproductions of the 5 original movie posters plus a fine montage of stills from the movies. So enjoy 5 entertaining movies with the cool and suave Dean Martin and the manic brilliance of Jerry Lewis.

5 out of 5 stars Missing Batlady?.......2007-05-15

I shall definitely ordering this set (despite the missing movies!),
but - can anyone tell me if "Artists and Models" has had Shirley MacLaine's missing "BatLady" number fully restored???????

That would make this an even better set.

3 out of 5 stars Where's "Money From Home" ??.......2007-05-09

I agree with the other postings - when will Money From Home be released on DVD? The best I've been able to do is buy a copy (pirated, probably) on VHS from eBay.

What can two little mice possibly do to save an orphan girl who's fallen into evil hands? With a little cooperation and faith in oneself, anything is possible! As members of the mouse-run International Rescue Aid Society, Bernard and Miss Bianca respond to orphan Penny's call for help. The two mice search for clues and, with the help of an old cat named Rufus, track Penny to the clutches of the evil Madame Medusa in a dilapidated ship in Devil's Bayou. It turns out that Medusa is using Penny to locate and retrieve the Devil's Eye Diamond--a stone she'll stop at nothing to possess. With a cunning plan, courageous acts, cooperation from local animal life, and lots of faith, Bernard and Miss Bianca help Penny find the diamond and escape from Medusa. The result of their adventure is that Bernard and Miss Bianca become close friends and Penny gets adopted. This somewhat dark, classic 1977 animated Disney film is based on Margery Sharp's <I>The Rescuers</I> and <I>Miss Bianca</I>, and features the Academy Award-nominated song "Someone's Waiting for You." Voice talents include Eva Gabor as Miss Bianca, Bob Newhart as Bernard, Geraldine Page as Madame Medusa, and Jim Jordan (radio's Fibber McGee) as Orville Albatross. Followed by the sequel <I>The Rescuers Down Under</I>. (Ages 5 to 11) <I>--Tami Horiuchi</I>

4 out of 5 stars Rescued from the VHS Wasteland.......2007-06-16

The rescuers are top-secret agent mice Miss Bianca (voiced by Eva Gabor) and Bernard (voiced by Bob Newhart) who are called into action when orphaned Penny (voiced by Michelle Stacy) falls into the clutches of the treacherous treasure hunter Madame Medusa (voiced by Geraldine Page) and her henchman, Mr. Snoops (voiced by Joe Flynn). The baddies plan to use the little girl as a diversion when they steal the world's most valuable diamond, The Devil's Eye. But the minuscule mice have big plans to rescue Penny before that can happen.

This was always one of my favorite movies as a kid, so it's great that's it is available on DVD finally - it'll teach a whole new generation of young ones that mice speak with Hungarian accents!

2 out of 5 stars Old Graphics.......2007-06-01

Probably will not get and keep the attention of younger children. The graphics are very old. The story of "abusive" treatment of a young child is probably not the type of story you want your child to see.

4 out of 5 stars Heads-Up for Adoptive Families.......2007-04-09

I didn't know what this movie was about until we sat down to watch it with our 3-year-old son, who was adopted from Russia. I didn't know it would involve an orphan girl, an orphanage, adoption, etc. This isn't the central theme of the movie, but it does exist. For my son's age, it ended up being appropriate and fine. In fact, we talked a little about the little girl wanting a Mommy and Daddy - and that she wanted to be adopted. So that was a good topic for us to talk about.

However, I didn't like the topic of other children being adopted because they were prettier or whatever... it makes it sound like a child's worth is only based on their specific qualities, instead of an unconditional love that a parent has for a child. And the orphanage topic could be disturbing for some children who did spend time in an orphanage. But in the end, the little girl was adopted and got a Mommy and Daddy! It made me want to cry. :)

Aside from these more serious details... it was a great story! :)

Duchess and her three kittens are enjoying the high life with their devoted human mistress until the wicked butler Edgar, with his eyes on a big inheritance, decides to dope them and get them out of the picture. How can these fragile creatures cope in the unfamiliar countryside and the meaner streets of Paris? Only by meeting the irrepressible alley cat O'Malley, a rough diamond with romance in his heart. After they get a taste of the wide dangerous world, he guides them home, and Edgar gets his just desserts at the wrong end of a horse. As always, it's really the voices rather than the animation that are the heart of the Disney magic: Phil Harris is brilliant as O'Malley, Eva Gabor as Duchess is... well... Eva Gabor; but perhaps the most memorable turns are by Pat Buttram and George Lindsay, who turn the old hounds Napoleon and Lafayette into a couple of bumbling Southern-fried rednecks. Their scenes with Edgar, and the musical numbers with Scat Cat and his cool-dude band, are classic. Most striking about seeing <I>The Aristocats</I> now is how deeply Disney's style of animation has changed since this was at the cutting edge in 1970. Perhaps the nostalgic, dated feel are just a result of being plonked down in Belle Epoque Paris, but the illustrations are fussier (a pity) and the animation and overall pace much less frenetic (sometimes a relief) than in more recent efforts such as Aladdin. <I>--Richard Farr</I>

Description

Disney's 20th full-length animated masterpiece, THE ARISTOCATS is an unforgettable mix of wild adventure, colorful characters, and jazzy music your family will find absolutely irresistible! This enchanting tale begins in Paris, when a kind and eccentric millionairess wills her entire estate to her family -- a family of adorable high-society cats. But when Edgar, the greedy butler, overhears her plan, he catnaps Duchess, the elegant, soft-spoken mother, and her three mischievous kittens and abandons them in the French countryside. Soon, they're being escorted home by the charming Thomas O'Malley, a rough-and-tumble alley cat, who takes them to his "pad" along the way, where Scat Cat and his band of swingin' jazz cats perform the memorable "Ev'rybody Wants To Be A Cat." Enriched by "high-style Disney animation" (The New Yorker) and toe-tapping music by Academy Award(R)-winning songwriters the Sherman brothers (MARY POPPINS), THE ARISTOCATS is a timeless treasure and the last animated feature to get the nod from Walt Disney himself.

4 out of 5 stars The Aristocats is a great movie.......2007-03-24

Howdy, I'm StoryMaker. The Aristocats is a great movie starring Duchess, a gorgeous white cat with three frisky kittens and a VERY rich owner. However, when she decides that when she dies her cats get the money (or maybe just all the cat food and cat toys you can buy with it XD), her greedy butler Edgar gets MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD. So mad that he plots to kidnap the kittens! However, with the help of thier new friend O'Malley the Alley Cat, they manage to get back home. This is a comical and charming movie that I reccomend you watch. When you're looking for humor, the *ever so funny* dogs will satisfy that. If you're looking for music, than you should listen to "Ev'rybody Wants to be a Cat" even if everybody doesn't want to be a cat. One of the only flaws is that at the end, when they got rid of Edgar (duh I won't tell you how), the rich owner (must...remember...name...) sort of just says "Too bad Edgar left". She has no idea that Edgar was the catnapper! I mean it's just so blank. I would like it if she found out. Still, this is a super fun movie! Signed, StoryMaker. "Gotta trust the kid's review!"

If, after watching this movie, you don't want to be a cat, then there's something wrong with you. I have loved this movie since I was a little girl and it's one of those movies that you will always remember the songs and the characters. Bambi and Dumbo made me cry, but The Aristocats made me laugh and sing. Great movie for all ages!

No, this isn't a quickie, direct-to-video sequel, cashing in on the success of the 1977 animated hit about adventurous mice, but a full-blown theatrical effort. This time around, Bernard (voiced by Bob Newhart) is trying to pop the question to Bianca (Eva Gabor) when they're summoned to Australia, where a young boy has been kidnapped by a pallid, gray-faced poacher (who looks like and is voiced by George C. Scott). Wilbur, a chatterbox of an albatross (John Candy, replacing the late Jim Jordan's character Orville), and Jake (Tristan Rogers), a kangaroo mouse--Bernard is jealous of the dashing rodent--assist the Rescuers in saving the day and imparting a mild environmental message. The film opens with an absolutely breathtaking aerial sequence--this was made near the beginning of Disney's animation renaissance--so impressive it would seem the story, literally, has nowhere else to go but down, but some smart gags, excellent animation, and rollicking adventures ensue. So why isn't it better known? It had the bad luck to open, in 1990, opposite another kids' film--<I>Home Alone</I>. <I>--David Kronke</I>

5 out of 5 stars If you dont like this, your no true Disney fan........2007-05-01

This was a superb entry in the Disney canon. The best sequel to a animated feature as well. Faithful and underrated. This is great people, Walt Disney would have been proud.

5 out of 5 stars sooooooooooooooo good.......2007-04-21

5 out of 5 stars Happy with my order .......2007-03-12

I received my DVD in a timely manner and was package so it would not get damage, i would differently order again from the sender

3 out of 5 stars I remember this better.......2007-01-15

Released a full 13 years after the original, The Rescuers Down Under was the first Disney sequel, but was also considered a failure at the box office, which stopped Disney releasing later sequels theatrically. Hence, the reason why Disney now have a long line of straight-to-DVD sequels, which no one ever buys, and all end up in the bargain bin.

This is definitely my favourite out of the two Rescuers movies, mainly cos I was going through a fascination with Australian accents at the time - and why I later moved on to watching Home & Away and Neighbours - but it was so colourful, and bright. And the Australian accents. I remembered this more before seeing it than I did the original, even though it must have been the same amount of time (years) since I'd seen them.

It's a shame there were never more in the series, but because of the death of Eva Gabor (Miss Biana) in 1995, they were never made, and the two movies never became Disney classics.

Listen out also for the late and sorely missed John Candy, voicing Wilbur, the brother of Orville from the first one. He's hilarious as Wilbur.

Other reviewers have mentioned various flaws in the film (Cody's lack of Australian accent for example), but for me, I have to remain loyal. You can keep your Emperor's New Groove, Brother Bear, and the awful sequels to Cinderella & Little Mermaid (which are now two a piece by the way!), I'll have this over the rest of them any day.

4 out of 5 stars Ok sequel.......2007-01-12

Not as good as the first, but still a good movie. A few scary parts for small children.

Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's 1958 direct-to-screen follow-up to their <I>My Fair Lady</I> was--miraculously--every bit as memorable as that stage smash. Set in fin-de-siècle Paris and based on a Colette story, <I>Gigi</I> also is about a girl (Leslie Caron) on a lower rung of society who blossoms into Cinderellahood before our eyes and ears. Thank heaven for Hermione Gingold and Maurice Chevalier as her mentors, and Louis Jourdan as her prince. The screenplay writer and lyricist Lerner always said that Gigi's title song was his favorite of all he'd written, and it's easy to see why--"Gigi" is a transcendent anthem to being transformed by love from an unexpected source. The entire score, including "Say a Prayer" (which had been cut from <I>My Fair Lady</I>), "I Remember It Well," "The Night They Invented Champagne," and "Thank Heaven for Little Girls," comprise a sparkling, rare soundtrack recording that stands alone and can be enjoyed and understood by those who have not yet seen the movie, deprived souls that they are. The winner of nine Academy Awards (plus a special Oscar for Chevalier), including Best Picture, <I>Gigi</I> was the last great MGM movie musical and one of the best. <I>--Robert Windeler</I>

5 out of 5 stars ahh.. for the love of french!.......2007-06-17

I just love this little movie. Funny and so French. Audre Hepburn (sp?) wanted this roll but she was too old to play the part. The older gentleman that is in this movie later played the candlestick in Beauty and the Beast...you know... be our guest, be our guest... to our service to the test! My daughter loved to laugh at the young girl getting tipsey on the wine her Aunt is serving along with the quality time being spent playing cards and poking fun at each other.

5 out of 5 stars As bubbly as champagne- delightful!.......2007-05-19

"Gigi" is a delightful film. When I was in my teens and would watch the film based on Colette's novella about a family of courtesans, I did not quite understand the meaning of it all. It was fun to watch Leslie Caron sing and dance around Paris, flirt with Louis Jourdan, and then get dressed up and go to Maxim's. I thought it all so romantic. Later, in my thirties, the sordid aspects of the story struck me. It had never occurred to me that they were grooming the young heroine, Gigi, to be a "kept woman." The French, being the French, do not mind immorality, for the most part, as long as it is elegant. The Bourbon Kings of France before the Revolution, with the notable exceptions of Louis XIII and Louis XVI, had mistresses who lived in splendor; the scandal was widespread, countered only by the piety of the queens and princesses. The practice of keeping a mistress spread to the wealthy bourgeoisie. The story by Colette, while it is fiction, indubitably had many historical counterparts.

Gigi, however, sees through the glamor to the ugly reality. When Gaston invites her to become his mistress by saying: "I want to take care of you, beautifully," Gigi knows that it means that she will sleep with him until he tires of her, and then move on to "another gentleman's bed." Because she truly loves Gaston, and is not after his money like everyone else in the story, she recoils from the arrangement. In the end, Gaston, realizing that because he and Gigi truly love each other, he can not expose her to lifestyle of the demi-monde. She must become his wife, or nothing. Ultimately, the lively and nonconformist girl he fell in love with inspires him to rise above his boring and dissipated existence.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful, beautifully done musical.......2007-05-07

Gigi!!!What a delight. Leslie Caron is beautiful, Louis Jourdan is wonderful, Maurice Chevalier charming and so so French and Hermione Gingold is a Gem. This is what musicals should be and are missed as they are not being made today. If you want a delightful experience and feel wonderful after seeing it, see Gigi and more than once. A delightful experience and beautiful to behold!!

5 out of 5 stars Thank Heaven for Little Girls.......2007-04-11

This is a fun musical that is worth rewatching. Apologies to readers as with out comparing to the book this film is first rate. And for those viewers that poses large high definition devices it is also fun to watch the background from clouds to furniture.

The year 1900. The place Paris. The story of the coming of age of a little girl, Gigi (Leslie Caron.) And the coming of age of those (Maurice Chevalier, Louis Jourdan, and Hermione Gingold) interested in Gigi's coming of age. Mixed throughout in the appropriate places are relevant songs and visual filters.

Directed by Vincente Minnelli who is well known for Brigadoon (1954), and On a Clear Day You Can See Forever (1970). Original music by Frederick Loewe Camelot (1967) (music: "I Wonder What The King Is Doing Tonight"), and Brigadoon (1966) (TV) (music: "I'll Go Home With Bonnie Jean").

4 out of 5 stars Delightful Leslie.......2007-03-28

The first time I saw this movie - several years ago - I was not very impressed. But now, today, it appeals to me much more. I can appreciate it upon 2nd or 3rd or 4th viewing. It is definitely worth having in one's collection. Leslie Caron is a fine little actress, and her leading man is very believeable as the filthy-rich, bored-with-life snob. UNTIL he tangles with sweet, funny, gay, enchanting Gigi. She softens him, falls in love with him, and when she blossoms from a giddy schoolgirl into a charming, alluring adult (teen-ager?), with the help of her grandmother and sophisticated aunt, his eyes are opened, he is definitely hooked, and all ends well. "But it, you'll like it!"

I would have given it a 5-star rating but for the fact I thought there's a bit too much of Maurice Chevalier in it.

P.S. - It does offer English subtitles. Maybe French too, I don't remember. (The plot is laid in France.)

The <I>Catalog of Cool</I> describes <I>Green Acres</I> this way: <blockquote> To be truly cool, one must genuinely understand the uselessness of logic and reason in a world gone mad.... Eddie Albert (ostensibly sane) spent six seasons appealing to the whacked out citizens of Hooterville to behave in a rational and orderly manner. Naturally, he got just what he deserved--the gradual erosion of his own mental stability. Aficionados of this show like to call it surreal. I call it real life. </blockquote> All one can add to that, to paraphrase the classic title song, is that DVD is the place for <I>Green Acres</I> to be. Hooterville may have been condemned by critics as a vast wasteland, but as the first season demonstrates, it provides fertile ground for bizarre behavior for a gallery of classic characters who rival the residents of <I>Twin Peaks</I>. "Oliver Buys a Farm," the series pilot, is a comparatively tame episode that gives little hint of the weirdness to come. Lawyer Oliver Wendell Douglas (Albert), weary of life in New York ("It's a rat race, and the rats are winning!" he declares), buys the Haney place to the horror of his socialite wife Lisa (Eva Gabor), whose ditziness has yet to be established. Look for appearances by <I>Petticoat Junction</I> denizens Uncle Joe (Edgar Buchannan), Sam Drucker (Frank Cady), Hooterville Cannonball engineer Floyd Smoot (Rufe Davis), and everyone's favorite wonder pig, Arnold Ziffel.

Among the season's other episodes, in "The Day of Decision," all of Hooterville wonders whether "she will" or "she won't" as Lisa chooses between life on the farm or returning to New York. In "Never Look a Gift Tractor in the Mouth," Hooterville is beginning to look like Peyton Place when Doris Ziffel (Barbara Pepper) becomes convinced that her husband Fred (Hank Patterson) and Lisa are having an affair. "Lisa Bakes a Cake," in which Lisa lists Oliver in the phone book as an attorney, is about as flat and heavy as one of Lisa's infamous creations. <I>--Donald Liebenson</I>

Really funny...way ahead of its time. I can't wait to get the rest of the series.

3 out of 5 stars Just Plain Silly Fun.......2007-04-12

If you like silly comedy this is for you. Yeah it is a bit ridiculous at times but it still has its appeal. Green Acres is worth watching for nostalgic reasons or just for the silliness.

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD.......2007-02-02

I am not sure why the one poster said the quality of the shows were bad. There is a little issue where the commercial breaks are in the first episode but the quality is great otherwise. MGM did not do anything to update the colors but the sound was updated. The picture quality is also better than the same episodes shown on Tv land.

There are 32 episodes in this package. The only problem is that it seems they do not allow a play through (if there is, we haven't figured out how to do this). There is a detailed description of each episode but not worth the hassle of having to go through the menu each time to watch the DVD.

TV today is so mediocre compared to the shows like Green Acres. We purchased this DVD at $14.98 with free 2 day shipping. I couldn't find any Green Acres DVDs in my area. If I could, it would be close to full price so this was a steal.

4 out of 5 stars Started off with a bang!.......2007-01-31

This, being the first season, was predictably not the best the show has to offer, but it was still good enough to merit 4 stars. If you like this show, but don't know which season to get, this one is good enough.

4 out of 5 stars good stuff!!.......2007-01-16

I bought this as a gift for my mother!!!
She loved the series when she was a child and had mentioned it to more than a few times...so I had planned to get it for her....I am glad that I did....It is done over in colour...and she really loved it.

Description

Sent to Paris to steal fashion ideas, department store buyer Samantha Blake (Woodward) decides a complete makeover is in order so people will stop mistaking her for a boy. Instead, she is mistaken for a Parisian "Lady of the Night" and decides to play up that role. Meanwhile, American journalist Steve Sherman (Newman) is in Paris to write about the fashion shows, but decides instead to write about this mysterious "Lady of the Night" and the two find themselves falling in love.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars "I've never kissed a policeman--no wonder I'm emotionally retarded".......2007-05-26

A NEW KIND OF LOVE is a sleek and stylish romantic comedy starring Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman--as romantic cynics on working holidays in the city of Paris.

Joanne Woodward plays Sam, a fashion designer who copies her pieces from other houses and sells them in a bargain-basement department store. She's a "semi-virgin" who has given up on love--until during a buyer's trip to Paris she meets womanising journalist Steve (Paul Newman). There aren't any sparks until Sam hits the salons and reinvents herself as "Mimi", a glamorous call-girl with a neverending collection of colourful stories.

Steve syndicates a column about the misadventures of "Mimi", until Sam's double life begins to spin hilariously out of control--and Steve's real feelings are discovered...

A NEW KIND OF LOVE is a colourful trip to Paris, filled with gorgeous gowns (provided by the leading fashion houses including Magnin, Pierre Cardin, Christian Dior, Lanvin-Castille, and Yves Saint Laurent). Edith Head also provides the regular wardrobe for Joanne Woodward. Never before and never again would Ms Woodward look half as ravishing as she does here. The wigs and clothes are out of this world! Ms Woodward was Golden Globe Award-nominated for her work.

Paul Newman delivers a great comedic performance here, too. The supporting cast includes the ever-reliable Thelma Ritter (in a Laurel Award-winning performance), George Tobias (aka Abner Kravitz from "Bewitched"), Eva Gabor, and a cameo from Maurice Chevalier.

The DVD sadly does not feature any extras, but just having this forgotten gem on DVD is a joy. (Single-sided, single-layer disc).

3 out of 5 stars Very thin sex comedy, dressed to kill but with nowhere to go..........2007-01-10

"A New Kind of Love" is a tasteless sex farce that must have looked bad even in script form, is Newman's worst film... It's a result of the old Hollywood cliché: a simple, mannish woman foolish1y devotes herself to a career instead of doing what women are supposed to do--hunt for husbands... But give her beauty treatments, a new hairdo and expensive clothes and she'll straighten out and find a man...

The new twist is that after her metamorphosis, the man mistakes her for a prostitute...

Although she's humiliated, she encourages his misconception, telling him sensational stories about herself until he falls in love with her! The implication: if fulfilling a man's infantile sex fantasies is the only way to get him, it's better than being an ordinary career woman...

Joanne Woodward plays a fashion designer who, with blonde wig and showy makeup, actually looks more dull than before, and Newman plays a sportswriter whose "athletics" with blonds has kept him from winning the Pulitzer Prize... He's in the usual role of alcoholic satyr, but now we're supposed to find that hilarious... As usual, he has some effective lecherous looks and self-disgusted expressions, but as in his first comedy, he's generally clumsy and graceless...

5 out of 5 stars A Perfect Foil to "The Devil wears Prada".......2006-08-24

I have loved this movie since I was a kid. It is a cute 60's romantic comedy with fashion and reluctant romance thrown in. Very dated in the mores and attitudes of the time, but a great time capsule of fasion in the 60's...and in Paris. It's a great supplement to "...Prada", which is sort of a "Miss Congeniality goes to Paris". Not great drama, but wonderful fun....with Paul Newman..and Marice Chevalier! It is a delight!

5 out of 5 stars Fun in Paris!.......2005-04-25

This glossy and sophisticated romp with Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward is delicious fluff. From the opening title song by Sinatra and the early voice-over of Newman comparing a group of bargain hunting women to a herd of cattle, we know this one is going to be fun indeed. Made in 1963 when both were at their finest, the chemistry between the two leads carries this film to make it the most entertaining piece of nonsense you're likely to ever see.

Samantha Blake (Woodward) buys, or steals, all the latest fashions from around the world for her department store. Her boss Joe Bergner (George Tobias) gets it into his head to go to Paris and 'steal' the hottest new fashions and off goes Samantha and Leena (Thelma Ritter) to the City of Lights.

Steve Sherman (Paul Newman) is a columnist who gets caught playing with the wife of his boss and promptly gets sent far away to Paris until said boss can figure out a way to break his contract and fire him. He meets pal Harry (Marvin Kaplan) in Paris and decides to save his job by writing about a Parisian 'Lady of the Night' and her escapades to send back home, which proves to be a big hit!

The problem, of course, is she ain't from Paris and she ain't no 'Lady of the Night.' Samantha gets introduced as one in a con by Hogan's Heroes Robert Clary to earn a few bucks after Samantha has a complete makeover because she's tired of being mistaken for a boy! She goes along because it helps her stay close to Steve as she makes up one wild escapade after another.

Meanwhile, Leena is competing with Fellicienne (Eva Gabor) for the affection of her boss, who doesn't seem to know she's alive. Of course, Steve falls for this 'Lady of the Night' and wants to reform her for himself, until he figures it all out! Are you having fun yet? Yes, you are! That is what this film is about. A fine cast charm their way through this most enjoyable film.

The scenery is great to look at and so are a young Woodward and Newman. Thelma Ritter and Marvin Kaplan offer nice support as well. When Steve and Harry go clubbing in Paris, Steve ends up with beautiful Jan Moriarity, in a nice but small role. The wife of actor Michael Parks, it would be her moment to shine before tragedy took her away.

When you're in the mood for some harmless fun this film will certainly do the trick. It's a reminder that a good film sometimes doesn't have to have any deeper meaning. Sometimes all a film has to do is entertain us. This one gets an A+ in that department and you'll want to see it the first chance you get.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious.......2005-02-26

Only 2 gripes. If you haven't heard the title song before (I have), you still won't have heard it when the movie is over. Except the 1st 8 bars sung by Chevalier in the middle of the flick. 2nd gripe. These idiots (including the Amazon staff reviewer) who think the way to review a movie is to tell you the whole damned story, thus ruining the show. Puke! When I saw this flick on Amazon I snapped it up. I saw it when it came out and remembered only 2 things. That I loved it (particularly Woodward), and that for some reason Paul Newman is pouring her a snifter of brandy and tells her to say "when" which she does when her glass is brimful. The director/screenwriter was brilliant. The star-studded cast outdid itself. Every one of them. The jokes were at times laugh out loud funny. The special effects were perfect. The whole thing (as you now know if you've read the other reviews!) was clever and original. I loved the hell out of it. This one I'm keeping!

5 out of 5 stars How could you not love this movie!.......2007-03-23

I purchased this movie for my 15 YEAR OLD. She remembered this movie and it was one of her favorites when she was much younger. It is such a cute movie. As a matter of fact our next cats are going to be named O'Malley and Duchess. No one can go wrong with the Aristocats - young or old!

5 out of 5 stars Everybody Wants To Be A Cat.......2007-02-01

If, after watching this movie, you don't want to be a cat, then there's something wrong with you. I have loved this movie since I was a little girl and it's one of those movies that you will always remember the songs and the characters. Bambi and Dumbo made me cry, but The Aristocats made me laugh and sing. Great movie for all ages!

<B><I>An American in Paris</I></B>
A GI (Gene Kelly) stays in Paris after the war to become an artist and has to choose between the patronage of a rich American woman (Nina Foch) and a French gamine (Leslie Caron) engaged to an older man. The plot is mostly an excuse for director Vincente Minnelli to pool his own extraordinary talent with those of choreographer-dancer-actor Kelly and the artists behind the screenplay, art direction, cinematography, and score, creating a rapturous musical not quite like anything else in cinema. The final section of the film comprises a 17-minute dance sequence that took a month to film and is breathtaking. Songs include "'S Wonderful," "I Got Rhythm," and "Love Is Here to Stay."

<B><I>Gigi</I></B>
Vincente Minnelli's 1958 adaptation of Colette's story about a girl (Leslie Caron) groomed as a courtesan--but desired as a wife by a Parisian playboy (Louis Jordan)--won a lot of Oscars®, but it also has the unusual distinction of being an MGM musical shot on location in the City of Lights. What a musical it is (by Lerner and Loewe): Maurice Chevalier and Hermione Gingold crooning "Ah, Yes, I Remember It Well," plus the songs "Thank Heaven for Little Girls," "Gigi," "I'm a Bore," and "She's Not Thinking of Me." Director Minnelli makes a sumptuous, dreamy, almost laid-back affair of it all, and the indispensable cast is forever etched into memory. Hollywood's long-running infatuation with Continental grace and manners, the memory of a much earlier time imported to American movies through such immigrant directors as Ernst Lubitsch, may have finally come to a gentle end with this film.

<B><I>My Fair Lady</I></B>
Hollywood's legendary "woman's director," George Cukor, transformed Audrey Hepburn into street-urchin-turned-proper-lady Eliza Doolittle in this film version of the Lerner and Loewe musical. Based on George Bernard Shaw's play <I>Pygmalion</I>, <I>My Fair Lady</I> stars Rex Harrison as linguist Henry Higgins (Harrison also played the role, opposite Julie Andrews, on stage), who draws Eliza into a social experiment that works almost too well. The letterbox edition of this film on video certainly pays tribute to the pageantry of Cukor's set, but it also underscores a certain visual stiffness that can slow viewer enthusiasm just a tad. But it's really star wattage that keeps this film exciting, that and such great songs as "On the Street Where You Live" and "I Could Have Danced All Night." Actor Jeremy Brett, who gained a huge following later in life portraying Sherlock Holmes, is quite electric as Eliza's determined suitor. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

Once again MGM has packaged three great films but in their pan and scan versions. It will be better to get them seperately in the letterbox versions.

2 out of 5 stars Expected better.......2007-01-09

It would have been much better with wide screen presentation, Gigi also lacks quality in soung and the magnificent viewes of Paris are lost. Of the whole collection, An american in Paris comes as the best picture in this format. Not worth the money

I can't believe how many versions of "The Last Time I Saw Paris" there are and yet NONE are in widescreen and none seem to be a good digital transfer! I can't image what's up with this movie! The movie itself has a great storyline and Elzabeth Taylor looks hotter than ever! Worth watching but can't understand why this movie keeps being shortchanged over and over again!

Got this movie as a Christmas gift for my mom. She loved it!

3 out of 5 stars The movie betrayed the dry-eyed spirit of the original material..........2007-01-04

"The Last Time I Saw Paris" converted the author's sensibility downward, to compassion and soap opera... The movie therefore betrayed the dry-eyed spirit of the original material... The first mistake, though, was in changing the era from the Lost Generation Twenties to post-World War II... The jazz age ambiance, recollected in the story, the mystique of Paris in the Twenties--these key tokens of Fitzgerald's sensibility were missing...

Even more damaging than the switch in era is the attempt to expand the characters whose motivations are only sketched lightly in the short story... Told in flashback, the story centers on a successful American novelist (Van Johnson) who returns to Paris and a reunion with the child he left in the custody of his sister-in-law (Donna Reed), since the death of his wife...

The movie and the actors do not move the characters from point A to point B: why, for instance, do husband and wife reverse roles, she transformed from party girl to sober wife who wants to go home to America, he collapsing from serious writer to disappointed drunk...

Van Johnson lacks the mythic stature to suggest other than a poor man's version of the great, doomed Fitzgerald... And Liz was too young and inexperienced at the time to embody an arch-neurotic, part a malicious temptress, and part an aiding angel...

The role is a cumulation of the Taylor ingénue: the goodtime flirt, cunningly stealing a man from her older sister; the spoiled daughter of a fast living phony; the irresponsible party girl with a good heart underneath it all; the sober young mother and wife; the defiant adulteress; the frail spirit cut down by the forces of nature...

At each "station," she is on home ground, but the part comes out in bits and pieces rather than a coherent whole: the character, finally, does not add up... It may be partly Taylor vapidity (Beverly Hills didn't prepare her for Paris), but it's also the script and the direction: that saintly woman, forgiving all, has very little connection to the blithe spirit who steals her sister's man and parties with non-stop frenzy...

1 out of 5 stars The Last Time I Saw Paris.......2006-02-28

I enjoy the movie or else I wouldn't have ordered it. However the quality of the film was very poor. It was grainy and the sound was not good quality. I was disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars The Last Time I Saw Liz and Van.......2005-05-31

Loved it! How can you not love a movie based on a story by the brilliant F. Scott Fitzgerald? You know there's going to be a beautiful and somewhat flighty woman, money issues and lots of drinking! All that and a great cast, including a Gabor sister (they are interchangable aren't they?), a James Bond guy, Roger Moore who is unbeliveably young, posh and just as annoying then as he is now,Donna Reed, the gorgeous Elizabeth Taylor and the lovable and oddly handsome Van Johnson. It's Paris and the War is ending, and can you believe it? Donna Reed and Elizabeth Taylor are sisters! Sounds weird, but works. Liz and Donna have an endearing father, who loves to party and lives like he has money, when in fact he has little. Van and Liz fall in love expressing sweet senitment in lovely and urgent prose, that would only work between young lovers, one a soldier and the other a young beauty, tired of war.

It's fun to get caught up in their blossoming romance and watch their love grow into a trusting relationship, that eventually gives way to some unpleasant moments, brought on by Van's attempts to write the Great American Novel and the sudden and unexpected wealth of Liz's family.

I loved seeing Paris officially light up for the first time after the war, and darling, no one can play a bed-ridden scene like Liz. Hey, don't think this is a Liz only affair, Van plays his share of sad scenes as well. But don't be dismayed, the ending is one that is redeeming and happy.
