Gene Wilder and Donald Sutherland play two sets of identical twins who are mismatched at birth shortly before the French Revolution. One pair is reared as royalty; the other is raised as the children of peasants. The plot in this film by Bud Yorkin is a wonderful mishmash of Dumas, Victor Hugo, and Molière, with the peasant brothers joining the revolutionaries while their bizarrely foppish siblings eat cake and ignore the events around them. Wilder and Sutherland are joined by a who's who of British comedy stars, including Billie Whitelaw, Hugh Griffith, and Victor Spinetti (and a cameo by Orson Welles)--yet this film flopped upon release, only to become a cult item among college students of the period. --Marshall Fine

Description

Gene Wilder and Donald Sutherland star as two sets of twins mixed up at birth -- one raised as an aristocrat, and the other as a peasant. They meet 30 years later on the eve of the French Revolution, where their mistaken identities create mass confusion.

4 out of 5 stars Wanted More.......2007-03-21

After reading the mostly glowing reviews, I was a little let down by the movie. Maybe I need to watch it a time or two more. Wilder is hysterical as always. He is a master of comedy. The film is filled with dry humor and outright slapstick. A little sexual innuendo thrown in rounds it out. I didn't find the movie fantastic from beginning to end, though I did find many fun parts. I will give it another watch and edit my review accordingly.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-01-16

This movie is wonderful and has been a family favorite for years. I was so happy to find it here because we had watched our tape so much it broke.

1 out of 5 stars Bombs away.......2006-08-21

This is one for the golden turkey book. It bombed with critics when it first appeared because it is NOT funny. Each scene is simply embarrassing. If college kids treat it reverently these days, my guess is that they're smoking the same stuff as the cast of this film must have been enjoying. And I purchased this because of the viewers' comments! This bears no resemblance to the later films of Gene Wilder (except the dreadful Silver Streak). It's also a waste of Donald Sutherland. And to think that Norman Lear lent his name to something this awful.

5 out of 5 stars Ignore the nay Sayers, this movie is genius comedy.......2005-10-11

I first remember seeing this film at age 6. I remember it because not fully understanding history, I thought this was a film about the American Revolution and the climax featured American patriots sacking a palace of George III.

I'm surprised there are so many negative reviews of film here on Amazon. The only people I've ever met whom even remember this film remember it because it's one of their favorites.

The plot: Two sets of twin brothers are switched at birth just before the French Revolution. One set is raised in the opulence of the aristocracy while the other set are raised as peasants.

1789, the rich brothers are sent to infiltrate Louis XIV palace and take part in an overly elaborate coup. The poor set are reluctant members of the French revolutionaries. After a mix up, the peasants become guests is Louis XIV's palace where they are not only out of place at balls and dinners, but fighting for their lives to survive this overly elaborate coup. In the climax the brothers flee with their girlfriends as the uprising peasants storm the palace in a battle royal.

Why this works:

High production quality: Photography, costume design, set direction, and editing are usually pushed aside in most comedies since the focus is on the actors and the jokes they tell. `Start the Revolution Without Me' is brilliantly shot on location to a production degree that dwarfs most recent 18th century films and take full advantage of it's beautiful setting.

Orson Wells' narration: I'd never have guessed that Orson Wells could be so funny. And in fact he isn't. He narrates throughout as if `Start the Revolution Without Me' were a serious historical piece. This is what's so funny. EVERY scene is introduced with the phrase "1789" the way only Wells can. After 10 times this really starts to get funny.

Corsican brothers ham it up: Gene Wilder and Donald Sutherland really go over board playing the overly evil and psychotic Corsican twins. Wilder carries his hawk Thor with him at all times. When anyone brings up the fact that Thor is dead Wilder flies into violent fits. They consider themselves invincible gods.

Ridiculously elaborate coup plot: Most of the character interaction revolves around a plot for the Corsican brothers to assassinate Louis XIV. However all the characters keep switching sides so much it becomes ludicrous. At a costume ball so many secrete notes are passed that the dance floor overflows with them. The coup is headed by a villain "Escargot" who like Orson Wells takes this absurd plot very seriously.

Peasant brothers are the only sane people: The peasant brothers also played brilliantly by Wilder and Sutherland act like we would if we lived in `Start the Revolution Without Me'. They observe that the inmates are running the asylum and its best to escape this entire ordeal post hast.

In conclusion, `Start the Revolution Without Me' is film making at its best. An adventure farce with plenty of good humor and truly genius story telling.

The critics here on Amazon are being way to harsh, saying that it does not compare to Alexander Dumas or other great literary works. This is a kin to saying that `The Naked Gun' was not as good of a portrayal of terrorism as James Bond. They are to wayyyy different things.

<I>Candy</I>, based on the naughty, notorious erotic satire by Terry Southern, whose wicked pen contributed to <I>Dr. Strangelove</I> and <I>Easy Rider</I> (among other '60s classics), and adapted for the screen by the sly Buck Henry (<I>The Graduate</I> and <I>Catch 22</I>), is a bizarre second-hand reconfiguration of <I>Candide</I> for the permissive '60s. Swedish teen beauty queen Ewa Aulin is Candy, all breathy, wide-eyed innocence as a curvy blond kewpie doll--think Lolita, Barbarella, and Baby Spice all rolled into one--whose naiveté lands her in the sack with one dirty old man after another on a sexual odyssey. Guest cads include Ringo Starr as an embarrassingly unconvincing Mexican gardener; James Coburn preening as a surgeon who puts the "theater" into his operating theater; Walter Matthau as a snarling, insane general; and French crooner Charles Aznavour as a humpbacked spider man. Richard Burton stands out as a soused, sex-mad poet with an ever-present wind machine dramatically blowing his hair, and Marlon Brando's phony guru with a seductive line of mystic patter is downright hysterical.

Despite luscious cinematography by longtime Fellini collaborator Guiseppe Rotunno and gorgeous opening and closing sequences of space flight by Douglas Trumbull, this clumsy misfire has all the cutting satire of a Monkees episode and only half the style. Director Christian Marquand lets the film ramble interminably while his cast mercilessly mugs their way through ill-conceived roles (except Aulin, who remains a passive, almost alien presence in the center of the chaos). The result is a sloppy all-star sex farce with blunt, misdirected attempts at social topicality buried in teasing peekaboo pinup photography and sexual romps, pleasing enough eye candy but hardly the erotic, satirical, transgressive portrait the picture promises. <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>

5 out of 5 stars This movie is dam awesome.......2006-06-12

This film will be too dated and confusing for most, but if you are into the sixties you should understand it. Fans of the avant-garde should dig it as well. We follow a hot Nordic woman on a voyage of sexual discovery. Or so the blurb says, in reality it's pretty much just a drug influenced 60s post-modern avant-garde nihilistic... well whatever -- lets just say it rocks. Not too heavy on the nudity as you would expect, but it delivers. The music is great and the best thing about this movie is you never know what will happen next. It's actually not that dirty of a movie, especially by today's standards. This movie has an all-star cast. And speaking of stars, our pal Ringo Starr makes an appearance. If your into this sort of thing you're love it, but if your the kind of person that has trouble keeping up with the plots of today's' films, do yourself a favor and pass it by and rent "The Italian job" again.

4 out of 5 stars "Give us the little chicken!".......2006-06-09

This film is certainly like no other movie you've seen. You can tell from watching it that it could never have been made before or after the years between 1967 and 1970. It brings to mind "Casino Royale" and "Barbarella", but "Candy" is better.

This is a psychedelic "Candide" story. Our heroine, Candy, travels around the world and encounters a number of men, all weirder than the last. The supporting cast is excellent. Walter Matthau plays a sex starved general, Richard Burton a pretentious, self obsessed, alcoholised poet. Ringo Starr plays the Mexican gardener and Marlon Brando makes a hilarious performance as an Indian guru.

The film is two hours long and the story is thin, but it kept my interest up. It is filled with humour that is sometimes too dry for its own good, but whether you laugh with the movie or at the movie, it's still lots of fun. This is a one-of-a-kind movie that's not for everybody's taste, but it's definately worth checking out.

1 out of 5 stars Saw this at the Drive-In years ago.......2006-05-11

I read the book and this wasn't as funny. Richard Burton took this role because he was drunk most of time. I don't about the rest of the cast, but I assume they were too. Ewa must have flown back to Sweden to do swedish porn or where ever she came from because I never saw her in anymore movies here. The book was hysterical, and with all the talent involved it really should have been a much better movie. Too bad.

5 out of 5 stars Rare role for Brando.......2004-07-29

I give five stars to this hilarious movie because of two reasons:
the beauty of Ewa Aulin and the role of Marlon Brando as the guru, really something rare and another demonstration of the versatility of the greatest American actor.

1 out of 5 stars I bought the DVD for the Starr power.......2004-07-25

I'm a Beatles fan, and I also like collecting their solo efforts - this means many of Ringo Starr's films (e.g. Caveman, The Magic Christian etc). This film was horrendous. The ever-virgin Ewa Aulin (only 18 at the time of filming) goes from one scence to another molested by a different man each time - all just failing to get the goodies. It's got a big name cast Charles Aznavour, Marlon Brando, Richard Burton, James Coburn, and John Hustin but that's all I can say positive about this film Also, I checked out www.imdb.com which says it's based on Voltaire's "Candide", and having read the book I saw nothing in the film that relates to it.
