I have my reservations.......2007-03-11
First off, this collection costs a little more than half of what these individual movies do on DVD. That alone makes me suspicious. Next, the description of these movies on this page says that they are in Black and White. The Quiet Man is in color. In fact, I would feel completely taken if I received a copy of The Quiet Man in Black and White. How can you possibly convey the charm of the Irish countryside as John Ford filmed it in anything but living color? Finally, there is the distributor, Lion's Gate. Back in 2004 this same company was responsible for distributing Alf. As has happened in other scenarios with other distributors of sitcoms, we consumers wound up with the syndicated versions of this great unique comedy. However, Lion's Gate completely ignored the fans' complaints and continued releasing syndicated versions of subsequent seasons. All of this taken together makes me very wary. However, if these are indeed quality transfers of these films, then this is the deal of the century. The Quiet Man is just about the best film ever made, The Sands of Iwo Jima starred John Wayne in just about the best role he ever had, and The Flying Tigers is a great war movie, even if it is a fictional account of the actual American Volunteer Group of pilots that flew dangerous missions in World War II. The Wake of the Red Witch is the only entry of the four that is somewhat weak, and it's not that bad.

Not many Westerns can claim to be original. <I>Seven Men from Now</I> can. Its making, for the B-picture arm of John Wayne's Batjac company, was a modest enterprise. The screenwriter, Burt Kennedy, was just starting out; the director, Budd Boetticher, was a matador-turned-filmmaker with only one film of distinction (<I>The Bullfighter and the Lady) in a journeyman career; the star, Randolph Scott, was regarded as "over the hill." Yet the three men's talents blended uncannily, producing not just a terrific Western but a cinema masterpiece--an ironical, beautifully spare bit of storytelling that became the ideal showcase for Scott's sandy reticence.
You don't want anybody synopsizing the story for you; there's little of it, really, yet how it's told makes it complex and compelling. We know, from a memorable first scene, that Scott is hunting down seven men who did something terrible. He will be thrown together with several other characters, including Lee Marvin as an affable but deadly rascal with whom he shares some history. Everybody has private reasons to be traveling through Apache country. Savor every syllable of the laconic dialogue, what people say and what they don't quite say--what they think they understand about one another's motives, except that that understanding keeps getting rearranged.
<I>Seven Men from Now</I> went missing after Wayne's death in 1979 threw the Batjac library into limbo. (Its success had inspired Scott, Boetticher, and Kennedy to collaborate on three other remarkable Westerns--<I>The Tall T</I> (1957), <I>Ride Lonesome</I> (1959), and <I>Comanche Station</I> (1960)--which, because they weren't made for Batjac, we've had little trouble seeing over the years.) The movie became legendary, a Holy Grail for film buffs. Now, with a beautiful restoration on DVD, it gets to be a movie again. A great one. --Richard T. Jameson

"I bet you're a big Lee Marvin fan. Me too, I love that Guy.".......2007-06-16
A stolid hero in a tight, B Western about revenge. But Lee Marvin as the cool second lead is completely mesmerizing. What he's doing is so dynamic, that you have to give credit to the star and director for letting him steal the movie. He's as good here as he ever was in his star roles.
Best B Western Ever!.......2007-05-06
This film contains everything that makes B Westerns great - a simple story, lots of atmosphere, great actors, beautiful cinematography, and a good dose of morality and the Code of the Old West (plus a great musical score as well!). This may be the best B Western ever made. The tale is simple, an ex-sheriff (played by Randolph Scott) is out to find the robbers of a Wells-Fargo office who killed his wife. Scott falls in with a pair of tenderfoot settlers moving west, which is when the fun really begins. Other reviewers have written more detailed plot summaries and background on the actors, director, etc. that I won't replicate here. Suffice it to say that virtually all of the other review are enthusiastic about this film, and I agree with these enthusiastic reviews. There is nothing particularly profound about this film, it is simply easy and entertaining to watch. If you've never seen the film, you can pretty much guess how it is going to end! The Old West probably wan't really like this, but maybe it should have been.
When Do we Get To See The Other Scott/Boetticher Classics?.......2007-04-20
Yes, this is a great film. Great Scott, great Boetticher, great Kennedy, great Marvin. But where are the other Ranown masterpieces? How long do we have to wait for THE TALL T, RIDE LONESOME and COMANCHE STATION? I'm beginning to doubt we will ever see them on DVD in Technicolour and Cinemascope. My VHS tapes are all but worn out. Does anyone out there know what Columbia is up to? Are these wonderful films tied up in some legal wrangle? Plenty of inferior Scott oaters are being pushed out on DVD, why not the best work of his career? I'm tired of waiting, aren't you?
"Seven Men from Now (1956) ... Randolph Scott ... Warners Bros.".......2007-03-31
Batjac Productions / Warner Brothers "SEVEN MEN FROM NOW" (1956) (78 mins/Warnercolor/Widescreen) (Dolby digitally remastered) --- Starring Randolph Scott, Gail Russell, Lee Marvin, Walter Reed, John Larch & Don 'Red' Barry --- Directed by Budd Boetticher and released in August 4, 1956, our story line and film, Ex-sheriff Ben Stride tracks the seven men who held up a Wells Fargo office and killed his wife. Stride is tormented by the fact that his own failure to keep his job was the cause of his wife's working in the express office and thus he is partly responsible for her death. Stride encounters a married couple heading west for California and helps them. Along the way they are joined by two others, Masters and Clete, who know that Stride is after the express-office robbers. They plan to let Stride lead them to the bandits, then make away with the loot themselves. But they aren't the only ones carrying a secret ... The first and one of the best of the Randolph Scott / Budd Boetticher / Burt Kennedy collaborations --- Often considered to be best of the best of Randolph Scott's westerns, his role was originally slated for John Wayne --- one of my all-time favourite western! - it grabs you by right from the start, then doesn't let go, not even for a moment, seventy-eight minutes later: you're exhausted!
Under Budd Boetticher (Director), Andrew V. McLaglen (Producer), Robert E. Morrison (Producer), Burt Kennedy (Screenwriter), Henry Vars (Screenwriter/Composer (Music Score) / Songwriter), William H. Clothier (Cinematographer), By Dunham (Songwriter), Everett Sutherland (Editor), Leslie Thomas (Art Director), Rudy Harrington (Costume Designer), Edward Sebater (Costume Designer), Carl Walker (Costume Designer) - - - - the cast includes Randolph Scott (Ben Stride), Gail Russell (Annie Greer), Lee Marvin (Bill Master), Walter Reed (John Greer), John Larch (Pate Bodeen), Don "Red" Barry (Clete), Fred Graham (Henchman), Chuck Roberson (Mason), Steve Mitchell (Fowler), Pamela Duncan (Senorita), Stuart Whitman (Cavalry Lieutenant), John Phillips (Jed), John Beradino (Clint) - - - - Randy Scott had a quiet gentleman nature about him which is not seen in the films of today ... Randy took his job and his responsibility to his audience very seriously ,,, would not settle for anything less than his best ... same was true in his personal life.

Special footnote, George Randolph Scott better known as Randolph Scott, was an American film actor whose career spanned the sound era from the late 1920s to the early 1960s ... his popularity grew in the 1940s and 1950s, appearing in such films as "Gung Ho"! (1943) and "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm" (1938); but he was especially famous for his numerous Westerns including "Virginia City" (1940) with Errol Flynn and Humphrey Bogart, "Western Union" (1941) with Robert Young and "Ride the High Country" (1962) with Joel McCrea (a coin was flipped to see whether Scott or McCrea would receive top billing, and Scott won despite having a slightly smaller role) ... his long fistfight with John Wayne in "The Spoilers" (1942) was frequently cited by critics and the press as the most thrilling ever filmed; they were fighting over Marlene Dietrich ... another smash hit film together that same year called "Pittsburgh" (1942) once again with Dietrich, Scott and Wayne --- Daniel Webster defines "Legend", as being a notable person, or the stories told about that person exploits --- well by the time Randolph Scott made his best films he had long established himself as a legend in the film industry --- they say practice makes perfect, if that is true by 1958 at 60 years of age he was the master with these oaters from the 50s ... Possibly Budd Boetticher's finest movie.......2007-03-24
This is a superb movie - it takes the B Western format and gives it high production values and an intelligent adult theme.
Picture quality is excellent, presented in its correct aspect ratio (1.85:1) - enhanced for widescreen TVs.
Randolph Scott plays a former sheriff who blames himself for the death of his wife. He had been too proud to accept a demotion to deputy sheriff, and therefore hadn't been there to protect his wife when she was killed by thugs robbing the town's bank. He is now on a mission to kill the men responsible, while - at the same time - refusing to forgive himself.
Add a married woman, trying hard to deny the desire she feels for Scott. Add her husband, driven by his own fears to side with the killers. And you've got an explosive mix of emotions.
But that's not all. There's also Lee Marvin in a superb performance as a badman willing, for the moment, to accompany Scott on his cold search for revenge. But only until the time is right for the final showdown.
This is a film you must see.

Craphouse.......2007-06-15
After reading the reviews for Clownhouse I decided that I had to add it to my horror collection. I bought it, sat through it, and found myself VERY disapointed. I have to admit one part made me jump, and I did enjoy the atmosphere but the idea was un-original, which wouldn't have bothered me but it wasn't done well. Three lunatics escape, dress as clowns and terrorize three brothers. I'm surprised I sat through this! If you're seriously considering buying this film, I strongly reccomend renting it first.
Yo man! Dis Movie Be Scary Yo! .......2006-03-01
Yo, I'm sittin' in my crib watchin' dis Clownhouse movie, right...next thing I know I start hearin' voices in my head. They saying mad scary things, like..."YO, LISTEN UP..CLOWNS IN YO ATTIC...CLOWNS IN YO BASEMENT...CLOWNS TAKIN' OVER YO MIND MAN! YOU BEST GET OUT DA HOUSE OR CLOWNS GONNA STRANGLE YO NECK!" So I grabbed all the 40's out my fridge and ran out da crib faster than a cheetah! I ran down da block passed all my homies and I didn't stop 'till I tripped over my own clumsy feet. Dat movie is mad scary man! Peace out dawg!
Send In The Clowns!.......2005-12-03
Plot: Three brothers -- Casey (Nathan Forrest Winters), Geoffrey (Brian McHugh), and Randy (Sam Rockwell) -- are left on their own when their parents leave town for the weekend. They decide to visit the local carnival/circus, even though Casey is terrified of clowns. And boy is this a bad night to choose! Three anonymous mental patients (Michael Jerome West, who is credited as "Tree", Bryan Weible, and David Reinecker) have escaped and run away...to the circus! After the show is over, the real clowns -- known as Cheezo (Timothy Enos), Bippo (Frank Damiani), and Dippo (Karl Heinz Deuber) -- are slaughtered by the inmates, who steal their clothes and makeup for a creepy disguise (then again, they do seem quite delightfully mad, so maybe they actually think they ARE clowns). They eventually find their way to the house of the three brothers. And, once they realize the residents are home, they decide to have a little fun. Of course, to the brothers, this will be nothing less than a night of terror! The inmates, for reasons unknown, seem to love a good kill, and tonight they're gonna give these boys a whole house full of horrific surprises!
Clowns have always been an interest of mine, and lately I've become even more interested. So, as a horror buff, I figured Clownhouse had to be the perfect flick for my evilly kooky taste. Well, while there are a few parts of the film that are certainly less than genius, I was quite impressed. Most B-movies have to take themselves lightly, or they will be a wreck. But there are a few of them that try to be full-on horror and suspense and accomplish their goal. Clownhouse wasn't particularly scary to me, but I thought -- for it's lack of comedic approach -- that it was executed very well. The acting isn't all that great, but it's not too distracting either. Once the psycho clowns start doing their business, you forget all about any underlying flaws. I think the atmosphere was what this was all about. Not to mention the fact that it was mostly believable. Almost every scene took a fairly realistic approach to the story. This sometimes causes a little boredom here and there, but for the most part makes the movie much more entertaining. The score (often an eerie big-top-ish tune, calliope style or with a music box) was definitely a pleasant surprise -- especially the theme, which can be heard in its entirety at the end credits. And, whether you're rooting for the clowns or the brothers, there are plenty of good scenes and a few creepy moments to satisfy the viewer. The concept alone is a good enough reason to see this, but I think Salva pushed it to the limit and came out with an enjoyable film for any horror fan to own. Overall, I don't really think I have any complaints. For a blockbuster hit, this would've been a bit of a disappointment. But for a rarely known B flick, I've got to give it two thumbs way up. There aren't any special features besides the theatrical trailer, but who needs 'em?
Its Really Just A BAD Movie.......2005-11-01
Leaving aside the painful and horrific real life incident that taints the movie for a moment, lets just look at the movie as it is. First off, I love horror movies, some of my faveorites even include ones that are considered "Bad" by tons of movie critics, like the first 4 'Friday the 13th' movies. I love most of the Nightmare on Elm Street movies, and the first 2 Halloween movies, and tons others, inlcuding, yes, Victor Salva's own 'Jeepers Creepers', whcih I think is the best horror movie to have come out in the last 5 years.
But Clownhouse is just laughable and annoying and terribly acted. The bickering among the 3 brothers was driving me nuts for one. The characters do so many amazingly stupid things that are cliches in horror movies, and they do them often, more so than in even the dumbest horror movies. Peple here have already noted the very cheesy music that takes away from whatever creepiness there is. The movie is just plain Boring.
The killings are all dull and lifeless. There just didnt seem to be any reason for this movie to exist, I mean its barely 80 minutes long! That is incredibly short for any movie, even a horror movie, which are usually around 90 minutes-plus or minus a few.
The movie is very lazy at explaining who the killers are, we get very little info about them, why they are mental patients, for one-What did they do? I mean what is their method of killing or why are they dangerous. Now that they are loose, what do they want? Money? Do they just wanna kill? Isn't it strange that they don't talk at all? SOme people have actually compared this to the greatest horror movie of them all, John Carpenter's Halloween, now thats a truley scary thought.
The movie was also incredibly predictable and took an incredibly long time to finally have the kids realize the killer clowns were in the house and gonna kill them, and even when the action finally starts, its all too unbeleivable and silly to beleive.
Unfortuneatley, I had a rather disturbing and sinister thought about why this "horror" movie, which almost doesnt even feel like a real horror movie to me, anyway, might have been made. Apparently, Victor Salva , the director had been molesting the young child star of the film, Nathan Forrest Winters, for years since he was age 7, they had previously worked on Victor Salva first film, a short film, some years earlier. Perhaps this whole movie making enterprise was endeavered just so Victor could have even more close proximity with the boy so he could molest him even more. Perhaps that is why Victor made the film. Its ironic that this movie is about evil clowns, because a clown is someone that usually makes kids happy, the kid actually has a line about why clowns are fake and shouldnt be trusted. Its all so weird, like was Victor trying to get himself caught? There is so much incriminating visuals and dialogue in this film that just doesnt belong in a horror movie, but well brings to mind kiddie porn. Apparently Victor was also a friend of the kids family for years. This movie is almost like Victor was bragging about his molestation of the boy, using his camera and storytelling skills to shove in everyone's faces his relationship with the boy. \
There is some strange back story in the film that is never really explained that alludes to mental illness, that the boy may have been suicidal and tried to off himself by cutting his hand or perhaps wrist. Its said he has "scars" there. Also that the boy may have been committed, just like the escaped killer clowns? Is Salva drawing a parallel there? Why does the child wet the bed at such an advanced age, Whats his problem anyway? Its never said, but perhaps Salva is hinting that hes gay, who knows. Its interesting that the killers dont just escape out of jail, they excape from a mental facility perhaps they are really just sick individuals, just like the boy ? Is Victor Salva trying to say he and the boy actor in the film both share something that others may say is sick but that they belong together? They say that child molestors search out young boys who they think are homosexual, who are one of them. The clowns are drawn to the boy, yet its also always the boy who see them, almost like hes looking for them like they are both drawn to each other.
I dont know why this film was made, so if my theories rub some here the wrong way, I am sorry, I just cant figure out why someone who would show talent in later horror movies like Jeepers Creepers, would make such a pointless awful and strange horror movie, if not for his own perverted pleasure. Definitely miss this flick, and dont be fooled by all the surprisingly positive reviews here. This movie sucks!
The most horrifying film ever made. Yet why one star?.......2005-09-27
The most horrifying film ever made. Clown House does the impossible, simultaneously pedestrian and brilliant, classic and clichéd, innovative and banal, dull and horrifying, with depressively wooden performances that upon Platonic examination are agonizingly electrifying. It is as trite as an Olsen Twins montage, and as grave as a snuff film. This movie is an abomination.
And yet it must be viewed twice. Once with the innocent eyes of an esthete video aficionado, beer and popcorn at hand, watching a horror movie with its usual familiar devices. This is the first level of text, for which critical engagement is not uncalled for. And yet, the more compelling text is beneath this surface, and points to the final aporia. For this is not fictive horror, this is documentary horror.
The script takes its inspiration from Lon Chaney's assertion that "There is nothing scarier than a clown after midnight," and follows Casey, an eleven-year-old boy with an unexplained fear of clowns. Against his conscience, he joins his two unsympathetic brothers on an excursion to the circus with a partial agenda to confront his fears. That same night three psychopathic killers escape a local mental hospital and appropriate the accoutrements and twisted guise of the circus's clowns, and proceed to the boys' house to "unhinge a jack-in-the-box of nightmares for Casey and his brothers!" This formula is not without charm.
And now for the subtext. In the horror genre, there is a visual device of using "the killer's point of view." This cliché is absent from Clown House, but the predator is indeed behind the camera, for director Victor Salva's degenerate weltanschauung is the true iniquity that has been recorded. For during the entire filming of Clown House Salva was raping the child star Nathan Forrest Winters, scarring him forever, smothering his spirit, and debasing him as a piece of meat. Winters' leaden acting is a direct result, for he could no longer invoke his art through the depression. This film, therefore, is not even child pornography, for it is far worse, it is the coded diary of a monster who disguises himself and his art in the innocent thrills of a horror movie. Almost like a clown, yes? Superficially innocent fun, yet underneath a monster, unknown and disguised. John Wayne Salva: Victor Gacy.
And this is the horror from which we cannot turn away. This is the "fascination of the abomination," this is Ricoeur's archetypes of sin, defilement, and guilt all incarnate in digital images, for this is evil. All engraved in a 1:33.1 aspect ratio for your convenient viewing pleasure.
Yet there is another text at work here: Salva recorded the whole thing. It is almost as if he wanted to be caught, wanted a parent to burst in and chase the monsters away. "Look at me! See what horrible thing I am doing! I'm getting away with it!" the twisted child cries into the night, and grows to complete the circle himself.
On first viewing there is a pointlessly long shot of Winters undressing to his underwear, which only marginally contributes to the tension of vulnerability. But on second viewing, when we know that we are watching the film through the eyes of Winter's rapist, it becomes the most horrifying shot in the film, and is in fact the probably method of Salva's seduction. Is that Salva's voice calling to Winters "Let's rehearse this scene [and then I'll rape you]?"
Only Paolo Pasolini's "Salo: One Hundred Days of Sodom" approaches the debasement of this film, yet Pasolini's painful sadomasochistic abuse of children was all faked. In "Clown House," Salva's off-camera rape of Nathan Forrest Winters is real, and as the narrative unfolds we witness the light extinguished from his eyes and his depression set in. For Winters, the film's "jack-in-the-box of nightmares" was in Salva's pants. How happy Winters must originally have been to think he was going to be a movie star when Salva cast him. How abandoned Winters must of felt when Salva returned that happy trust with daily rape and depraved self-gratification at Winters expense. All this psychological horror for this young actor is captured here on film.
Dante Alighieri lacked the vision to construct an appropriate circle of Hell for director Salva. But for this film and his abuse of Winters, he is surely going there. That should give us some comfort.

John Wayne stars as a 19th-century sea captain out for revenge against a wealthy shipping magnate in this interesting and unlikely 1948 offering from Republic Pictures. Wayne plays the wronged Captain Ralls with a convincing bitterness that foreshadows his later work in the John Ford classic <I>The Searchers</I>, and his grim portrayal of Ralls hits a high point when Ralls purposely wrecks his enemy's prize treasure ship. The painfully beautiful Gail Russell costarred with Wayne only the year before in <I>The Angel and the Badman</I> and delivers a memorable performance as the tragic Angelique. Gig Young also stands out as a crewman who eventually learns the truth about Ralls. <I>Wake of the Red Witch</I> shares similarities in both character and climax to an earlier Wayne picture, C.B. DeMille's <I>Reap the Wild Wind</I>, but this film has a more direct approach in exploring the complex motivations of its characters. <I>--Mark Savary</I>
Customer Reviews:
One of the best John Wayne films.......2007-02-25
I first saw this movie in a theater in the early 1950's [movies stayed on the circuit for years then - big cities, first runs, small towns, then part of double features, etc.]. I was under 10 and it was an amazing movie then. I have seen it many times since and I like it even better now. Sure, the special effects now seem clumsy and dated. But the story is a good one and the battle of wills between Wayne's character and Luther Adler's character is still one of the better done of this type plot device. Wayne was consistently underestimated for years by his peers and critics but the public knew better. Yes, among the hundreds of movies he's in, a good percentage of them are B specials. But, starting with Angel and the Badman [w/ the same lovely Gail Russell as in "Wake..."], he didn't have to bow to anyone. "Wake..." is one of his best along with [imho]: The Cowboys, The Shootist, The Quiet Man, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and maybe True Grit. Even the more venerated and more decorated actors of Wayne's era made clunk movies. And, not all the blame could be cast at the writers/directors... I'll be adding a DVD version of "Wake.." to my Wayne collection. It's a good one! {I'll enjoy watching this one with my grandson in a couple of years.}
Wake of the Red Witch.......2006-11-03
A very interesting and exciting sea picture that involves intrigue, danger, adventure, and romance. What more do you want? In addition to all of the previously mentioned offerings you have a sea monster, ie; a giant squid which is only one of many obstacles that John Wayne has to battle to retrieve valubles located in a sunken freighter.
This John Wayne film is different and unusual in that John Wayne is not the all encompassing heroe that he usually portrays in films. He starts out as a somewhat greedy, deceptive person out to get what he feels he deserves from a former employer and rival, but in the end he finds redemption from his love interest, the very beautiful, Gail Russell, who starred with Wayne in "The Angel and the Badman", another fine Wayne western. Also, in the film is Gig Young, a great, "in my opinion", underrated actor who does a fine job as the character with redeaming qualities, and a friend of John Wayne in the film.
They don't make'm like this anymore! I'm sure you'll enjoy this film, pure adventure, and a film you don't have to analyze, just enjoy!
I recommend purchasing this film. You won't be disappointed!

Duke 1, Squid 0 .......2005-06-16
WAKE OF THE RED WITCH has it all: An island full of half-naked Polynesian islanders, carved stone heads that stand twenty-feet high, a scuttled schooner laden with gold, the pearl god Tara-Tatu, breathless Euro chicks steaming it up beneath the vines and palm fronds on the RKO backlot, a succession of improbable flashbacks and John Wayne going mano-a-mano with a giant squid.
This movie is a high seas, wooden-ships-and-iron-men costumer that spends most of its time tracking the tempest tossed romance `tween the Duke and Gail Russell, and the bitter rivalry between Wayne and the skullduggerous Luther Adler.
WAKE OF THE RED WITCH is decently unmemorable in all respects, non-essential viewing for even the hardiest of John Wayne loyalists. It's filled with useless posturings and is based on a popular forgotten novel of the day. Others may find it riveting, but I spent most of my time trying to figure out how Wayne kept his toupee in place during the underwater scenes.
Worth Viewing but Not Remembering.......2005-04-18
I am a big John Wayne fan. I love watching his movies. I enjoyed this one as well even though it is not a particularly good effort of his. It was entertaining but did not really catch the imagination.
If I remember correctly, this film is a semi-remake of one he did jsut a few years earlier. Compared to that horror, this one is excellent but don't try to compare it to some of his greater works like "The Quiet Man", the cavalry trilogy or even "Donovan's Reef". Those are great and memorable; this one is merely an afternoon's mindless entertainment, soon forgetten in the detail if not the minutiae.
THe story revolves around two men with a feud over a woman. In this case, both men are involved in shipping in the South Pacific in the days of sail. Wayne commits an act of barratry (piracy conducted by a ship's own crew) against the ship of his rival. The rival wants revenge but so does the Duke. In the end, the sea sorts it all out.
Purchase this movie if you are a diehard John Wayne fan who must have all his work. Otherwise, rent it.
Garland Roark's Novel Brought to the Screen.......2005-03-30
This seemingly obscure 1949 movie produced quietly during some of John Wayne's greatest years of stardom is an overlooked excellent and well written drama. The movie ties into the original story and actually opens the original book and begins the narration of Chapter one at the hands of the first mate. The story revolves around scuttling a sailing vessel "The Red Witch" that contained a cargo of five million in Gold Bullion. There is competition between the owners and Captain Ralls (John Wayne) who plays an ambivilant character who sides with whatever group is most advantageous at the time. The story is told from the perspective of the first mate and utilized the "flashback" technique similar to "Casablanca" but spends considerable time filling you in on how the present situation developed. Although this is in glorious B&W, the island scenery and romance of the age of sail work wonders along with casual romances and adventure to make this a great and interesting film to watch.

Description
THE FIGHTING SEABEES - All-American hero John Wayne takes a crew of construction workers and turns them into one of WWII's toughest fighting forces in this action-packed war classic. After having convinced the Army brass to let his civilians bear arms, Wedge Donovan ( Wayne) whips his new troops into combat shape. But when he leads his unit in an alll-out assult against the Japanese, Donovan is brought up on court-martial charges and must fight for his life on a new battlefield. THE FIGHTING SEABEES offers an entertaining combination of strong supporting performances by Daniel O'Keefe and ravishing, about-to-be-superstar Susan Hayward; brawlinlg, big budget action sequences; and an Oscar-nominated score- all of which led Leonard Maltin to give "3 stars" to this spirited saga turned box office bonanza. WAKE OF THE RED WITCH - John Wayne battles enemies above and below the waves - including a giant killer octopus - in WAKE OF THE RED WITCH. This sprawling epic adventure pits the tough-minded Captain Ralls (John Wayne) against the treacherous Captain Sidneye (Luther Adler) in a bitter rivalry on a South Seas isle. At stake is a fortune in pearls hidden in an underwater cave. At risk is the hand of the beautiful Angelique (Gail Russell), daughter of Desiax, the tyrant ruler of the island who plans to marry her off to Sidneye. In an attempt to rescue Angelique, Ralls must seize the pearls and exchange them for her freedom. The danger continues as fate holds one final test of strength and bravery for the bold Captain and the woman he loves.

One of the spookiest ghost stories ever put to film, <I>The Uninvited</I> is also one of the few classic haunted-house movies to treat the subject with respect and seriousness. Ray Milland and Ruth Hussey play a brother and sister who leave the city to live in a beautiful old house dramatically perched on a cliff overlooking the Cornish coast. As they discover some of the house's peculiarities--the unexplained chill that settles in certain rooms, the aroma of mimosas that wafts through the house, flowers that wilt when brought inside--they are told by local girl Gail Russell that the house is haunted, by the spirit of Russell's mother no less. The rationalist city folk first scoff at the idea but as Milland slowly falls in love with the frightened girl he investigates the legends and discovers some startling hidden truths. Donald Crisp costars as Russell's humorless, hard-bitten grandfather who forbids her visits to the house. Handsomely shot against the beautiful Cornish countryside, director Lewis Allen wisely suggests more than he shows and the uneasy tone and quietly restrained direction looks forward to such films as <I>The Haunting</I> and <I>The Legend of Hell House</I>. Though Allen ultimately reveals a suitably spine-tingling apparition, some of the film's best moments are chilling in their simplicity: nocturnal moans, slamming doors, and the dog's whimpering fear of the upstairs. <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>
Customer Reviews:
The Uninvited.......2007-06-20
This is probably the best Ghost Story ever brought to the screen. The acting is great, Ray Milland is suave, sheer class. The story is suspenful. I had read the book...long since out of print and hard to find and when I stumbled across the movie on late night television in the 50's I was hooked. I have the VHS version but am really anxious for the DVD. I would buy it immediately. I do hope that Universal will find it in their heart to release it to us die-hard fans of this wonderful, timeless and excellent Ghost Story.
Please release this classic on DVD.......2007-06-19
The Uninvited is a classic ghost story. The scary scenes can still give me the chills. It's also funny, and beautifully filmed. Please release the Uninvited on DVD!
One of the best.......2007-05-21
Not an epic romance, but one of the best for sheer entertainment. Ray Milland at his most charming sets the tone for this romantic melodrama and ghost story. Gail Russell is the patented innocent ingenue, Ruth Hussey the sophisticated hero's sister, Donald Crisp the crusty, autocratic grandfather, and Cornelia Otis Skinner suitably creepy as the manipulative "dear friend" of the departed mother of the heroine. The movie is based on a 1942, Dorothy McCardle novel of the same title that is also a good read for a period mystery/ghost story. I wish it would come out on DVD; I, for one, would buy it immediately. PKR
To the people working at Amazon..........2007-05-20
I have never seen this film but I heard good reviews about it. If you release a DVD version of this film I can promise you that I will buy it as will hundreds and probably thousands of other people.
Why not DVD, come on Universal!!!.......2007-05-17
I have been waiting for a few years now to get this movie. I'm waiting for it to come out in DVD format first. What's wrong with Universal? Why aren't they producing this?
This is a classic spooky, but not horror, film that I want to share with my daughter; as my mother shared it with me. I just hope that Universal Studios will get on the ball!

How can you go wrong with a movie featuring the great Harry Carey as a philosophical lawman named Wistful McClintock? Well sir (or ma'am), you can't, and this first production from John Wayne's personal unit at Republic is simply one of the loveliest Westerns anybody ever made. The producer-star plays gunslinger Quirt Evans who, wounded by his archrival Laredo Stevens (Bruce Cabot), is taken in and sheltered by a Quaker family--in particular, by the daughter of the household, a dark-eyed angel (Gail Russell) who could entice Satan himself to the path of virtue. Not that these good people get pushy about converting "Brother Evans." For his part, Marshal McClintock, who's amiably looked forward to hanging Quirt someday, keeps dropping by to see which happens first--Quirt's reformation, or Laredo's return to finish the job he started.
Entrusting the direction to screenwriter James Edward Grant, Wayne bolstered Grant's debut by tapping Yakima Canutt to handle the hard-riding second-unit stuff. The Duke also stole a few moves from a little project he'd been working on with Howard Hawks, <I>Red River</I>. Such larceny may have been superfluous. Grant wrote far and away the best script Wayne had ever had at Republic, creating a gallery of memorable characters (including comparative bystanders) and developing some very entertaining business for them--especially for such juicy character actors as Paul Hurst (the Quakers' mean-spirited neighbor), Olin Howlin (a braggadocious telegraph operator), and Hank Worden. The result was a minor classic deftly blending humor, romance, authentic sweetness, and just enough leathery menace to keep things on the generic up-and-up. This one's a real treat. <I>--Richard T. Jameson</I>

A Good Version of Angel & THe Badman.......2007-02-20
I have always liked this film and this GoodTimes version tranfer is the best I have seen so far. When an older film is being put together for DVD tranfer a minty original negative must be used from the beginning and then the sound and film quality can be improved further using current digital technology.
Everyone knows the story of this film but what I look for is quality reproduction of these older films for viewing enjoyment.
I finally found the DVD that has caption (English subtitle).......2006-07-17
I can't believe that there are many different studios producing DVDs for the same movie (B&W or color, I saw both - color from Turner cable on TV few years ago). This one (D3K) is the only one that I can find that has English subtitle. The only problem I have with this one is that subtitle will work if I start the movie from the beginning. Subtitle will not work if I returned to specific scene. I will have to fast forward from the beginning after activating the subtitle. To avoid that, I will have to make sure I have a free couple hours to watch the whole movie at one sitting. That's the only reason I deduct 1 star. I guess it's better than nothing. Otherwise, the movie itself is great and enjoyable to watch featuring John Wayne and Gail Russell. And the movie is black & white.

Angel & The Badman.......2006-02-23
audio & visual quality are excellent.
a well made movie-very strait forward plot with a real theme.
perfect casting-john wayne at his best & gail russell at her very best.
these above two actors always had superb chemistry.
we need more dvds like this. the movies are out there.
Badman?.......2005-09-17
One of the better old westerns that John Wayne truly changes his ways for an angel of mercy.
Good movie........2005-09-14
I like this version better than the remake, "The Outsider", with Naomi Watts.

Devotees of Dorothy L. Sayers's impeccable sleuth, Lord Peter Wimsey, will want to pour themselves "two large whiskeys" to toast the release of this 1974 miniseries based on one of Sayers's most popular novels. Ian Carmichael stars in his signature role as the future aristocratic detective, who, as a young soldier en route to the battlefield, becomes embroiled in "a very distressing story." Someone has stolen "a king's ransom" in uninsured emeralds from the estate of Sir Charles (Desmond Llewelyn, better known to James Bond fans as "Q") on the night of his son's wedding. No mystery here: In this case, the butler really did do it. But that's only the beginning in a puzzler that will span 20 years, when Wimsey inadvertently returns to the scene of the crime and steps into some "damn bad business" involving a recently discovered mutilated body. He discovers at the bottom of a well and in a church tower baffling clues that harken back to that fateful robbery and the still-missing jewels. The nine tailors, by the way, refers to nine church bells and the arcane tradition of change ringing. This entry in the Wimsey series offers the usual pleasures of splendid acting, colorful characters, and intriguing story. We also get to see how Bunter became Wimsey's faithful manservant. Suffice to say, <I>The Nine Tailors</I> will really ring your bell. <I>--Donald Liebenson</I>
Description
Ian Carmichael stars as Dorothy L. Sayers' aristocratic detective in the most requested title in this phenomenally popular mystery series. Fans call The Nine Tailors not just Sayers' best novel but "one of the great novels of the century." Lord Peter finds himself caught up in a case involving a mutilated corpse, a 20-year-old jewel robbery, an outbreak of Spanish influenza and a set of nine church bells.

He sent forth a raven.......2006-04-08
A young Lord Peter (Ian Carmichael) in uniform on his way to the war. He is standing in for his brother The Duke of Denver at a wedding. Mischief is afoot and an emerald necklace was pinched. Where it was stored for save keeping I can not say. It looks like the perpetrator was winged by a well placed shot. We get the inside story and know the truth.
All in the first chapter we see the crime and the fait of the perpetrators. We also get a first hand view of the meeting and growing relationship and Wimsey and Bunter (Glyn Houston.) As fait would have it Lord Peter finds him self once again in Fenchurch St. Pauli again. This time as providence would have it just in time to replace a sick bell ringer on New Year's Eve.
Three months later a body is found in and Lord Peter is invited to the inquest.
This film is based on a Dorothy L. Sayers novel of the same name with the screen adaptation by Anthony Steven.
At first you are not sure that this is the same peter Wimsey when you see the blond hair and mustache. However if you look close they made little attempt to cover the wrinkled face.
If you have an opportunity to view this film before reading the book you will not be distracted by the deviations and omit ions form the written story.
Jewel Thieves and Bellringers.......2003-02-09
This is one of my favorite Wimsey mysteries. I thought this was excellent-the country and village setting is very well done. Plenty of suspense and an interesting plot, that focuses on a long ago theft that devastates a family. Bunter was very enjoyable. However, I thought Wimsey seemed much too middle aged in the 1917 scenes-he was supposedly a young soldier but he acts and looks like he is 50! I think the age issue needs to be straightened out. Otherwise, the drama was full of old fashioned charm. I watched this a few months ago but this is worth seeing twice.
Great British mystery but buyer beware.......2002-11-15
I love this series a lot and enjoyed the first half of this particular mystery however there was a problem with the disc. This is a two disc set and while the second disc is correctly marked, it is actually a duplicate of the first disc! This is obviously a mistake in the factory but it is highly frustrating since it happened not once, but twice. It's quite frustrating to be left on a cliff hanger and then have the second half of the mystery be unavailable. By all means, buy this wonderful mystery but note that there are some defective sets floating around. I have ordered my third set and hope to finally see the ending. All I can say is, Buyer Beware, check both discs right away so you can return it promptly if you need to.
The Best of The Wimsey Mysteries.......2002-09-24
The Nine Tailors is my favorite Wimsey mystery, and not surprisingly, it is my favorite of the Ian Carmichael series which were produced in the 1970s. Here we see Lord Peter's early life as he attends a wedding where an expensive emerald necklace goes missing. World War I interrupts before an investigation can begin, and Wimsey goes off to fight. We see him meet Bunter, later his faithful valet/assistant, and eventually wind up back in the vicinity of the spot where the necklace went missing. His interest piqued, Wimsey resumes the investigation just as some surprising events and mysterious strangers reminds everyone in the village of the robbery. The untangling of this mystery is vintage Dorothy L.Sayers, with twists and turns and lots of red herrings. You also get to learn a lot about church bell peals. Highly recommended.
The Bell Tolls for Lord Peter.......2002-07-26
I have enjoyed listening to this story for over 12 years on cassette, before I finally found it on DVD this past winter. Of all the Dorothy Sayers stories I have listened to and read, this is the best and most well designed of the lot. Watching the story unfold on DVD brought back a lot of the memories I had from living in England for 4 years. Ian Carmichael plays the role of Lord Peter just right, as do the other characters. Having listened to the voices for so long, I felt I knew the characters so well. If you enjoy English mystery, whether it be Agatha Christie, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Frances Durbridge, Dorothy Sayers, among so many, you will enjoy this DVD, as well as the others in this series. It is a truly special series of mysteries that add tremendously to the genre.

Highly Enjoyable for a Sequel.......2007-04-17
Usually the "unplanned" sequel of a hit movie suck inasmuch as the producers found an unexpected hit and try to shake the money tree for a bit more.
This is not true for Fright Night part 2. The sequel (based on the surprise hit of 1985) has a well thought out and believably based plot (at least for a vampire tale) and story line. In this case Regine is looking for vengeance in the destruction of her brother Jerry Dandridge in the previous film. She plans to exact this by turning Charlie Brewster (now in college) into a vampire himself and torturing him through eternity. While she reserves Charlie for herself, she has a troupe of other beasties and baddies which follow her around and generally cause mayhem wherever they go. These provide mostly for comic relief. The male sidekick catches bugs and just before devouring them gives the scientific name for each. Others may not appreciate the inserted humor, but I found that it added to the story. Sort of like the creator saying, "Hey, this is just make believe, let's have some fun". My favorite was the young guy w/ the sideburns who plays a hip vampire and tries to `make it' with Charlie's new girlfriend, Alex. One feels that he just recently became one of the undead and still wants to savor the life he once had (in a very clumsy way). Another reviewer says he came off as a dork. I personally think this is the impression he was intended to give.
Julie Carmen gave a very nice performance as Regime. And of course, we have Roddy McDowell back as Peter Vincent, Vampire Killer. Once again, director Tommy Lee Wallace has done wonders with the effects and make-up.
Others have commented on the generally poor quality of the DVD by Artisan. I am re-watching the disc now and do not consider the picture grainy or dark. Quality seems to be on par with most other DVD's I've seen (and I've seen a bunch of 'em). True, the DVD lacks any extras and the picture is full screen; but that is not a primary consideration in the quality of the product so far as I am concerned. The music that accompanies is haunting and appropriate.
All things given, I believe that fans of the original Fright Night will definitely enjoy this unsung gem. Maybe not an academy award winner for horror flicks, but certainly entertaining and worth having in any gothic horror collection.
Definitely Recommended (ages 10 and up)

Great sequal.......2007-03-23
The Fright Night movies are great, part II was a perfect sequal, really great sharacters from pt.1 as well as new ones.
soon you will be inmortal and live for ever.......2006-06-18
All the powers of evil take to the air in this untamed return to classic horror. as darkness decends and day fads into night, the lethally seductive vampiress regine {julie carmen} seeks vengeance for the the untimley death of her brother... charley, alex and t.v. horror show host, peter vincent {Roddy Mcdowall} are about to fall victim to a terrifying campaign of passioate revenge as they find themselves facing a deadly confronate with the Queen of evil and her bloodthirsty creatures of the night. this sensational seqto 'fright night' features the unmatched special effects wizardry of gene warren jr, who created movie magic for such films as' the terminator and gremlins'
Twice the Horror, twice the Vampire's, all REVENGE!.......2006-06-03
When most people think of sequals, they jump to the conclusion that all of them "suck." That they couldn't possibly live up to the first movie. For the most part, sequals (some movies) can become painfully obvious that no time or money was put into the project. That said, not all sequals end up being total garbage. When watching a sequal, one has to understand that it's ment to continue the story in a new direction. Most people expect to be "blown away" or even want to embrace it on an equal level of the first film. If you can put those kind of expectations aside and watch the movie for what it's worth and what the director wanted to express, sequals can become an enjoyable experiance. FRIGHT NIGHT 2 is one of the better sequals to come from the 1980's Horror movie scene. Set a couple of years after the events in part one, the story follows up quite nicely with an interesting story and wonderful make-up effects. Basically the Sister of the Vampire who was killed in part 1 aims to get revenge for her dead Brother and thus the Horror starts all over again. In a lot of ways, FRIGHT NIGHT 2 seems darker and more evil than part 1. Where as the first FRIGHT NIGHT is a classic in it's own rights, part 2 packs an equal punch in terms of Horror and plot. The Vampire's all look very cool and the movie has it's fair share of gory moments. Horror buffs will get a kick out of a few choice scenes, one in which a Vampire get's a mouth full of roses. Those who know their Vampire lore understand what I'm talking about. The head Vampire at the end of the movie transforms into a very scary, horrifying beast which was very pleasing to me. In my opinion, Vampire's should be powerful creatures of darkness. Not corny, gothic, cheese balls like the ones in QUEEN OF THE DAMNED. The head Vampire in FIGHT NIGHT 2 is terrifying and everything I could have hoped for! Another thing that makes this movie so enjoyable is the creepy music. The director pretty much kept the same score from the first movie, so that helps add to the spooky atmosphere. In the end what you've got here is a wonderful sequal that has been given a bad image by the so called "fans" of Horror who expect way too much from their Horror movies. True fans of Horror know how to enjoy any movie in the scene and FRIGHT NIGHT 2 shouldn't dissapoint. Fans of true Vampire's and gore hounds have alot to enjoy here.
2.35 STARS: A pretty decent sequel as far as sequels go........2005-10-04
The orignial "Fright Night" is a very entertaining movie, but it wasn't scary and neither is "Fright Night 2", but one has to admit that both movies have style, vampire style. "Fright Night 2" does what many sequels don't do and that is that it actually follows up where the original left off, at least relatively speaking. Bringing back Roddy McDowell and William Ragsdale (notwithstanding his mullet) as Peter Vincent and Charlie Brewster was a great idea as the sequel maintains some of the flavor and attitude of the original "Fright Night"
The plot of "Fright Night 2" is quite simple. Charlie Brewster is now in college and is trying to move on with his life...he is seeing a psychiatrist who has convinced him that vampires do not exist and that group hypnosis was to blame for his and Peter Vincent's hallucinations of vampires. Charlie has a new girlfriend, but deep down inside, Charlie still feels something is not right and that's where Regine Dandridge comes in as she is a vampire, the sister of Jerry Dandridge who was vanquished by Charlie and Peter in the first movie. Naturally, Regine wants revenge for her brother's destruction. Charlie experiences terrible nightmares and begins to suffer mightily. It is up to Peter Vincent and Alex (Charlie's new girlfriend) to stop Regine from making Charlie one of her own.
Tommy Lee Wallace, who also directed "Halloween III", does some interesting things with the vampires in "Fright Night 2". At times, the vampires look like ridiculous looking monsters and the movie was vague at best and sometimes ambivalent about whether the man with sideburns was a vampire or a werewolf...he ended up coming off looking like a dork if you ask me. At any rate, it is clearly evident that the vampire makeup that was so well done in the original "Fright Night" is a bit lacking in the sequel. It appears that Wallace and others thought to spice things up with the vampires' appearance and so on and so forth, but the prowess and effectiveness of the vampires are diminished from what was produced so very well in the original "Fright Night".
The plot of "Fright Night 2" is what makes the movie work and the movie is entertaining, but there is no doubt that the wild and flamboyant attempts to spice things up in this sequel hurt the movie in my opinion. Also, some attempts at border line lame comedy were also in poor taste. Essentially, "Fright Night 2" is not as strong of a movie as the original "Fright Night" and while neither movie is scary or pure horror, the original "Fright Night" provides an excellent treatment and aesthetically convincing product that the sequel lacks.
Despite various inconsistencies and some confusion with traditional vampire lore e.g. vampires walking about in daylight hours, "Fright Night 2" is a solid movie that is quite entertaining, but perhaps if the movie contained its perameters within the more conventional and classic vampire traditions, the movie could have been somewhat more effective. That said, "Fright Night 2" does not have the requisite atmosphere to be characterized as a traditional horror movie, nor the makeup or potential to be as darkly powerful and as horrifying as "Dracula" or "Salem's Lot", but the unique style of the "Fright Night" series make both movies worth owning if you are a vampire movie fan like myself. However, as far as pure and unadulterated horror, you won't find it here...hence, the 2.35 STAR rating.

One of the better old westerns that John Wayne truly changes his ways for an angel of mercy.
Good movie........2005-09-14
I like this version better than the remake, "The Outsider", with Naomi Watts.
