Hanging out at an Italian villa with Rock Hudson and Gina Lollobrigida sounds like a painless way to kill a vacation--and Come September is a pretty painless movie, too. Rock is a millionaire who spends a month at his home on the Riviera every year, except this year he's come early and surprised his staff, who've been running the place as a paying hotel. This is one of those comedies of sexual frustration--Rock can't get alone with Gina, because the "hotel" is overrun with American teenagers (chief among them Sandra Dee and Bobby Darin, who married after meeting on the shoot). The plot is labored, and director Robert Mulligan shows little feel for farce (he would shortly hit his stride with To Kill a Mockingbird). At least the location shooting has a nice summer breeze to it, and Darin sings "Multiplication" in a nightclub, complete with hepcat moves. --Robert Horton

Product Description

Rock Hudson stars with the ravishing Gina Lollobrigida in a racy, romantic romp (Motion Picture Herald) set on the breathtaking Italian Riviera.

Every September, this successful New York businessman (Hudson) visits his Italian villa to relax and to romance his Roman girlfriend (Lollobrigida). But after arriving unannounced one July day, he s in for a huge surprise! During his absence, the luxurious home has become a hotel. What s more, the current guest list accommodates a gaggle of American girls with persistent boys pinning after them. In a desperate attempt to regain control, Hudson manages to lose his privacy, his girlfriend and his mind until he comes up with a plan of his own.

This is the film in which Bobby Darin not only makes his feature debut, but also ends up marrying his lovely co-star, Sandra Dee, just ten days after filming wrapped. Come September also features beautiful camerawork by Greta Garbo s favorite cinematographer, William Davis, with designer Morton Haack creating Ms. Lollobrigida s exquisite gowns.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic Comedy, and Deservedly So.......2007-02-08

Once upon a time a fabulous group of actors got together to star in a frothy comedy set in the Italian Riviera: Rock Hudson, Gina Lollobrigida, Sandra Dee, Bobby Darin, Walter Zlezak, Brenda De Banzie, Joel Grey. It was 1960, in America we were dreaming of Camelot, and in sunny Italy a new prosperity was making life easier for most people. Those were, indeed, happier days. I look at this film with tremendous nostalgia. Everything in it is just about perfect. Rock reveals his gift for comedy in a very natural, spontaneous way. Gina is absolutely stunning: a perfect beauty, an ideal woman. The locations used for the film, at Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino, are breathtaking. A film I always go back to. This is a world I would like to inhabit.

5 out of 5 stars In love with love........2007-01-04

I had heard that 'Come September' was a great movie, but I couldn't find it anywhere in town. [I live in Anchorage, AK, so it's kind of a quandry as to why I couldn't find it.] Anyhow, I found it on here, it was delivered quickly, and I loved it! It's one of the best romantic comedies I've ever seen.

5 out of 5 stars Don't wait for September.......2006-06-27

A classic movie offering. Enjoy Bobby Darins screen debut with future wife Sandra Dee. Rock Hudson and Gina Lollabrigida make a fine couple as a counterpoint. Many laughs, some singing and romantic moments make this a good pick. Don't wait for September, see it now.

4 out of 5 stars Looking for a movie.......2006-05-10

I am looking for a Bobby Darin/Sandra Dee movie--yg married couple, her mother convinces her that you can train a husband like you train a dog--verrrry cute. Don't remember the name. Anyone out there remember??? E-mail me at lovethatjazz@comcast.net

4 out of 5 stars Comfort Food Movie.......2006-03-17

Scenery was fabulous; makes one want to travel the coast of Italy right away! A Romantic Comedy much like so many other 1960's Romantic Comedies: innocent & kind of screwball at the same time. Women are always dressed just so, and the leading men always handsome. Nice movie to watch after a long day!

Description

Frank Sinatra told the director to give the newcomer a break. John Sturges (The Great Escape) obliged, providing favorable camera angles for Sinatra's young co-star. In his first big-budget film, Steve McQueen was ready to grab the movie world's attention. McQueen plays Bill Ringa, one of the O.S.S. combatants harassing the enemy in World War II Burma. Sinatra is Capt. Tom Reynolds, leading the guerilla fighters and risking court martial while doing so. Also among Never So Few's many are Charles Bronson, Peter Lawford and in her first Hollywood film, Gina Lollobrigida. About McQueen, the New York Herald Tribune's reviewer wrote: "He possesses that combination of smooth-rough charm that suggests star possibilities." A star is born in Never So Few.

4 out of 5 stars Good war film, great Gina.......2007-02-03

NEVER SO FEW was Gina Lollobrigida's first film shot in Hollywood (BEAT THE DEVIL,TRAPEZE and SOLOMON & SHEBA were all shot in Europe), and her arrival to star with Frank Sinatra in this picture was a very exciting event. She should have been given more screen time, but this is an action film intended for a male audience that cares little for romance. So her appearances are always somewhat episodic and her character remains undeveloped. Sturges stages the action sequences very well, the male cast is splendid (especially Richard Johnson and Steve MacQueen), the South East Asian locations are wonderful and atmospheric. Sinatra is always interesting on screen but he does not seem to be very involved in the project. Gina does what she is asked to do, and she does it well. We warm up to her character as the film progresses. At any rate, Lollobrigida was gorgeous-looking in 1959. What a woman!

3 out of 5 stars An undistinguished war film..........2007-01-10

One striking point in 'Never So Few' flavor is the luxurious Gina Lollobrigida, cautious, conventional and very careful), who is something to look at from any angle or any side... She displays an array of revealing gowns, and a full and shapely figure... And don't think the lady doesn't know it... With her, temptation is an art, and a titillating bath is an aesthetic manoeuvre... The signorina racks up quite a score... She exudes real charm and, contrary to expectation, the exotic locations of Burma, Thailand and Ceylon (exquisitely photographed in (Technicolor and CinemaScope) are tentatively explored...

'Never So Few' is an undistinguished war film... The stars are much more important than the story, but there is plenty of action...

Sinatra is heroic, tender, and rebel... A hard-drinking, hard-bitten army captain swinging with the plot from mild-mannered soldier so brave in battle, to an officer and a gentleman so afraid of life... He leads his men against the Chinese although it means crossing the Chinese frontier... In a captured Chinese village he orders all prisoners shot, wiring his superiors to 'go to hell.' He finds American supplies, and licenses issued to warlords by Chungking to raid Allied troops and sell the booty to the Japanese, splitting the take with Chungking!

The supporting cast is filled with familiar faces and each reacts to the situation differently:

Peter Lawford is the surgeon pushed out over the hills.. who is treating Captain De Mortimer for malaria... He advises Sinatra not to cross the border...

Steve McQueen looks good as the reckless, casual GI corporal who overpowers two 'guardians of law & order' so neatly that Sinatra gets him transferred to his outfit... McQueen gives his best screen performance, and it led to his being chosen as one of 'The Magnificent Seven' as Yul Brynner's first recruit and second-in-command...

Richard Johnson is Captain Danny De Mortimer ordered with Tom Reynolds to take a two-week "holiday" in Calcutta to obtain a surgeon and medical supplies for their men...

Paul Henreid is a war profiteer who buys and sells things in seven languages, at all hours...

Charles Bronson is the tough and edgy Sergeant John Danforth...

Dean Jones is the sergeant who clearly delivers the message: 'Do not move any attack. Rearm and release any prisoners you may have taken.'

Robert Bray is Colonel Parkson who warns Reynolds not to attack the Chinese village...

Brian Donlevy is General Sloan who backs up Reynolds and puts off the Chungking representative..

Let yourself cash with the action, of which there is plenty, and I think you're in for a chuckling time..

5 out of 5 stars Colorful WWII Action Film with a Strong Cast.......2006-10-13

NEVER SO FEW is a very entertaining WWII hardnosed action adventure film set in Burma with great characters, dialogue, camaraderie and Steve McQueen as Ringa. The outstanding cast includes Frank Sinatra, Richard Johnson, Gina Lollobrigida, Peter Lawford, Charles Bronson, Brian Donlevy, Dean Jones, Paul Henreid, George Takei and Whit Bissell. Steve McQueen almost steals this film away from Frank Sinatra. However, the worldly Sinatra leading a guerilla force, battling the enemy well as his superiors (Brian Donlevy) and having time to romance Gina Lollobrigida demonstrates a strong sense of charm, righteousness and an ability to show off just how good an actor he really was.

Director John Sturges really new how to tell a story with strong individuals giving each character a sense of depth, believability and distinct charisma. Composer Hugo Friedhofer was very adept at scoring WWII films capturing the drive of the combatants juxtaposed with the horrors of the conflict. The one actor that seems to have gone unrecognized in this film is the very British Richard Johnson. In the earlier scenes in the film he was Frank Sinatra's drinking partner and his second in command. Johnson gives a very colorful and convincing performance and the camaraderie between him and Sinatra looks incredibly natural. It is this camaraderie that is the springboard for all the interwoven characters in this film and really enhances Steve McQueen's introduction as Ringa and the rest is film history.

1 out of 5 stars Gilligan's Island Meets World War II.......2006-06-30

A contemptable piece of drivel. I got this Dog as part of a Steve McQueen collection, even though McQueen has but a small part. I was had.
I compare this movie with Gilligan's Island, both for the unrealism of the jungle set and the fact that they stay in the same place for most of the movie! I would certainly expect the OSS to move around a little- especially since the Japanese attacked their camp in the beginning!
Besides McQueen's obvious star quality and Gina Lollobrigida's beauty, this movie has no qualities to recomend it.
Peter Lawford was predictably wooden, but the real villian of this mess is Ole Blue Eyes. If Sinatira ever phoned in a role, it was here.
The so-called action scenes are laughable. But, the most unbelievable turn is the vengeful mini invasion of China by Sinatira's band at the end. I won't give the end away, but if anyone can imagine such an operation happening in WWII... just absurd and insulting to the audience. Possibly, since it was a 1959 movie a cold war theme was happening?
The only thing worse is the confrontation between Sinatira and the Top Brass later! Frank was possibly facing a firing squad but looked like he was falling asleep.
But, the most unreal turn was where Frank dumped a whole fifth of Scotch whisky into a tub and stuck his feet in it! Oh, you're soaking in it! Any real soldier would have drank that bottle!
Are you getting the idea that I loathe this movie?

3 out of 5 stars Excessively melodramatic wartime yarn.......2006-05-05

The John Sturges directed wartime drama "Never So Few" was a disappointing effort owing primarily to a poor mix of action sequences and an implausible romantic interlude between scrawny and unconvincing leading man, Frank Sinatra and the exotic Gina Lollobrigida.

Sinatra played Cpt. Tom Reynolds leader of a joint American and British force in command of local Kachin fighters in Northern Burma during WWII. Sinatra's small but disciplined force were heroically attempting to keep the 40,000 man Japanese force at bay from an easy incursion into Asia.

During a forced period of R & R with his right hand man British Cpt. De Mortimer played by Richard Johnson, in India, they make the aquaintance of Lollobrigida. She plays Carla Vesari, mistress of wealthy businessman Nikko Regas played by Paul Henreid. Of course Sinatra is immediately smitten with her, setting off a nauseating romance sequence that does little to advance the plot. The only saving grace for these scenes is the introduction of Cpl. Bill Ringa played by the truly macho Steve McQueen. "Never So Few" served as his springboard as he was soon to appear in the TV series "Wanted Dead or Alive" and then the classic western "The Magnificent Seven".

The overly drawn out drama thankfully returns to the jungles for more action sequences with Sinatra's marauding task force. They eventually butt heads not only with the Japanese but with Chinese troops given a mandate to hunt down American soldiers.

While 'Never So Few" has many shortcomings it's wonderful cinematography, expertly using Burmese, Thai and Sri Lankan locales is not one. It also served to feature another up and coming macho leading man, Charles Bronson.

4 out of 5 stars Anthony Quinn, in full monster regalia, remains in the memory..........2007-01-11

'Notre Dame De Paris,' set in medieval Paris in the year 1482, tells the moving story of a beautiful gypsy dancer and a grateful hunchback who adores her...

Quinn's distinctive interpretation of the ward of the cathedral in the sumptuous, wide-screen, full-color version of the Victor Hugo successful historical novel, is full of vitality as well as pity...

Despite the spectacular appearance of Gina Lollobrigida, top-billed as Esmeralda, it is Quinn in full monster regalia who remains in the memory, not many lengths behind Lon Chaney and Charles Laughton...

The motion picture is focused on the events leading to Esmeralda's trial for witchcraft and the stabbing of her noble lover, the cavalier of King Louis XI... Esmeralda is accused of the crime, tortured and sentenced to death... When she is about to be hanged, Quasimodo pushes the hangman aside, sweeps her into his arms, and carries her into the sanctuary of Notre Dame...

Much of the rich atmosphere so vividly described in the Hugo irresistible tale - the happy Festival of the Fools, the Court of Miracles, the cathedral and its role as the center of medieval Paris, the storming of Notre Dame - provide the spectacle a timeless message of lust, jealousy, prejudice, hate, compassion and love...

Quasimodo is just 'one long, ugly face from his head to his toes,' but in his distorted body, there is lot of humanity, kindness, and gratitude... Quasimodo lives high in the church towers... We see him exceptionally agile, showing no fear for its height, climbing down its facade, embracing its huge bell, telling Esmeralda in halting words that she is safe within the walls of the cathedral... That day, Quasimodo leaps onto 'Big Louise' and rides his beloved huge bell back and forth sending its mighty sound throughout Paris for his beloved Esmeralda...

Esmeralda is the sensuous gypsy girl, who ascends the pillory to quench Quasimodo's thirst... She is fond of dancing, noise and open air... She is in love with one man whom she calls the 'bright sun.'

Master Frollo (Alain Cuny) is the man in black who inspires respect and fear... He is the haunted Archdeacon of Notre Dame, an expert on witchcraft... It is said that he is the greatest magician of all France, but magic is merely illusion... Frollo is completely taken with Esmeralda's beauty... He is the king's judge who lies about the ravishing temptress who follows him in his dreams... His thoughts are like Quasimodo's face, ugly! ('We are brothers.. your face and my soul..')

Phoebus (Jean Danet) is vain, arrogant, and opportunistic... To him, the Gypsy girl is a sexual object to be cynically manipulated, used and rejected... The only love which the Captain of the King's Archers recognizes is narcissism... His tendency to erotic self-love and his excessive self-admiration...

Robert Hirsch is the harmless poet - educated under the patronage of Master Frollo - who breaks the laws of the kingdom of thieves and beggars, and has one chance to live...

'Notre Dame De Paris' shows us that human nature always struggles between two opposing forces: The light and the darkness, the grotesque and the beautiful, love and hate, hope and despair...

1 out of 5 stars sadly, this just doesn't hold up.......2006-03-02

I recall seeing this movie as a kid and loving it. However, it looks very old-fashioned, is very stiff, very staged looking. It's just kind of hokey.

A new "Hunchback" movie is needed. I'm waiting for that one, maybe with Brad Pitt as the hunchback.

Best,

Film Guy

5 out of 5 stars The Grimace Of The Gods.......2005-10-19

The other versions are excellent as well, including Lon Chaney's silent epic; Charles Laughton saving Maureen O'Hara from burning Hollywood; and Demi Moore in her greatest performance in the Disney musical. But for my money, this is the version to buy and cherish. Filmed in France for Frenchmen, and secondarily for the international market, HUNCHBACK was criticized at home for failure to cast French actors in either of the leading roles. It's not as if France in 1956-7 didn't have dozens of great stars, and wouldn't you have enjoyed seeing a version of this Victor Hugo tale with, say, Jean Gabin as Quasimodo, and Brigitte Bardot as Esmeralda? Instead the producers went elsewhere, arguing that in the novel, of course, Esmeralda's "foreignness" was an essential part of the tale, and the same for Quasimodo. Gabin was, indeed, a very real possibility, for he was director Jean Delannoy's Inspector Maigret in several films and the two clicked together on a personal level as well.

Thus we have Anthony Quinn as the tortured church servant, and Gina Lollobrigida as Esmeralda. She plays up the Gypsy aspect quite a bit, and in general cavorts like she's Demi Moore trying to have a good time, but something of her fate seems to be hanging over her handsome, tousled head, and the shadow of the gargoyles is like the guillotine--a factor of doom. Lollobrigida had just finished filming TRAPEZE and was given only four days' holiday before reporting to Paris for the arduous, twelve-week NOTRE DAME DE PARIS shoot. (Notice how buff her arms are in those sleeveless peasant blouses, that's a holdover from her training for TRAPEZE.)

Lovers of French film will rejoice to see Roger Blin in s smallish part: Blin starred in everything from Cocteau's ORPHEUS to Clouzot's LE CORBEAU, and in NOTRE DAME DE PARIS he's very stylish, though badly dubbed into English.

Best of all is the lustrous color photography! Because this was a production partially financed by the French government, approved by Minister of Culture Andre Malraux, the production was allowed to film directly in the Cathedral itself, so every time you see an interior shot, or so it is said, you are peering into the mysterious Notre Dame itself. The long shots of Quasimodo pouring molten oil over the battlements were recreated largely in the studio. Watch for the famous bateaux-mouches parading lazily up the Seine, which has never looked more beuatiful. This film was nominated for a "Cesar," the Oscar of France, but somehow lost to a smaller product. The day of the "new wave" was at hand and it wouldn't be long before the names of the moment would be Louis Malle, Jean-Luc Godard, Agnes Varda, Chris Marker, and Francois Truffaut. When the bells ring in the ancient cathedral, they're ringing out the end of an era, and ringing in a new dawn for French film.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly faithful, surprisingly good.......2003-10-24

Strangely, there has never been a bad film of Victor Hugo's classic tale, and while this is indeed less successful than Laughton, Chaney or Disney's versions, this French effort is still a surprisingly good and much under-rated film. To get the most out of it, you have to bear in mind that Hugo did not write a horror story but a tale of unrequited love and anguish. There is little of the Gothic on show here; rather, everyone is trapped by a desire for what they are denied. This is much more 'Notre Dame de Paris' (the novel's actual title) than 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame': Quasimodo probably gets less screen time here than in any of the other films, only dominating the drama in the last third. Instead, as with Hugo, it uses the cathedral of Notre Dame as the thread that binds all social stratas - Kings and beggars, thieves and soldiers, gypsies and alchemists, playwrights and aristocrats - giving a vivid portrait of a time and place half imagined, half real.

Quinn is more of a brute than we're used to seeing in our Quasimodos: unlike Laughton, he's no poetic soul trapped in a broken body but an animal who is given an inkling of what it means to be human. Lollabrigida fares better than usual as Esmerelda, and if their relationship is never moving, the ending, for once taken directly from the novel, is genuinely touching.

There are problems: the dubbing is at times irritating (and there is no French-language option on the disc), while Jean Danet is quite the most embarrassing Phoebus imaginable, stilted, impossibly smug and just plain odd-looking. Some key scenes are poorly staged, most notably Quasimodo's rescue of Esmerelda, while the hunchback is not given a strong entrance. But, if you're willing to take a chance and watch it with an open mind, the pleasant surprises outweigh them. While not the most lavish version, the scale and colour of the film, particularly in scenes such as the Court of Miracles, gives us a sense of a world around these characters, the addition of CinemaScope and some impressive sets helping to broaden the scale. Delannoy's direction is occasionally imaginative, with a good eye for the Scope frame. The script (co-written by 'Les Enfants du Paradis' Jacques Prevert) is often witty and doesn't shy from the darker tragic tone of the novel. Georges Auric's score, though ill-served by the original sound recording, is also a fine effort.

The transfer is good, with only a few edge enhancement problems, although it seems very slightly cropped in some shots, and the failings of the early CinemaScope lenses do result in an occasional loss of detail in some shots. The DVD even includes one brief torture sequence that has long been cut from many prints, as well as the original theatrical trailer.

Kept out of distribution for years (Disney bought the rights around the time they were working on their version and shelved it), the film has not been able to gain much of a reputation. Indeed, it continues to get short shrift from many critics - 'Time Out's film guide is particularly hostile. But, as they say in Britain, 'Time Out hated it, so it must be good.' And it is - not great, but certainly pretty good.

5 out of 5 stars Faithfull.......2002-08-07

This is the first version of the movie and in my humble opinion, the best. I say this for one reason and one reason only, and that is that its the only version that ends the way the novel does. Without spoiling it I'll just say that its tragic yet the most romantic imaginable!!

4 out of 5 stars A lovely little movie.......2002-12-07

This movie isn't hilarious, but it is enjoyable and still relevant. Ultimately, the movie strikes a terrific balance--confirming the importance of maintaining a family through tolerant love, while dealing with what could have been a cheaply-treated scandalous secret. Gina Lollobrigida is a woman who has a nearly-adult daughter, but she doesn't know which of 3 WWII American servicemen is the father. She encounters a very "baby-boom"-ish concern--how to encourage upright behavior in her child despite her own suspect past--which is resolved in a satisfying but not simplistic manner. Strong but fallible men, strong but fallible women, and an uplifting ending. Good stuff, well done.

3 out of 5 stars It;s really not that bad.......2004-04-17

Why this film was a commercial failure and is critically loathed is beyond me. No, this is not one of Bob's best, not by any means. But Hope himself is in fine form, and while the film is uneven, there are enough good one liners and sight gags to satisfy his fans. Hope is ably supported by an ace supporting cast, including Phyllis Diller, Dick Sargent, and Jeffrey Hunter. Just sit back, relax, and laugh.

3 out of 5 stars A surprisingly sub-par military comedy from Bob Hope.......2003-05-30

It is rather ironic that Bob Hope (who turned 100 today) provided so much entertainment for American troops in the field from World War II to Vietnam and beyond yet could only come up with this less than stellar military comedy. Bob plays the titular Sgt. O'Farrell, the power behind the throne on a U.S. base during World War II. When the base turns dry, the result of a Japanese torpedo and unsympathetic officeers, the sarge comes up with a plan, involving his own private navy, to get beer to the troops. O'Farrell is helped by Calvin Coolidge Ishimura (Mako), a Japanese deserter hiding out on the island. Once the boys are liquored up, the next goal becomes female companionship. The good news is that this brings Gina Lollobrigida to the island; the bad news is that it also brings Phyllis Diller, who plays Nellie Krause. She takes a liking to O'Farrell, which makes it difficult for him to go after Gina (or "Maria" as she is called--but no name on earth is as good as Gina Lollobrigida). Hope and Diller worked fine in their first film together, "Eight on the Lam," but not this time around as she relentlessly pursues O'Farrell. There is some good slapstick shtick and good lines here and there, but overall it is rather uneven. Is this the best Bob Hope comedy film ever? No, that remains "Paleface," even above the Road pictures. But it is not as bad as "The Iron Petticoat" with Katharine Hepburn. Be glad I do not let anybody see my copy of that film. "The Private Navy of Sgt. O'Farrell" is worth one look, but I would not consider it worth repeat viewings.

5 out of 5 stars Hope fan.......2003-04-08

This movie is so cornball that I just love it. Bob and Phyllis together are great, and so is Jeffrey Hunter. Light hearted goofy fun! Wish it were cleaned up and put in widescreen though cause the ocean island setting is very scenic.

5 out of 5 stars Leonard... Get Real!!.......2001-11-02

Of all the Bob Hope Movies during the sixties, this was one of the best (even though I loved them all). It had the slapstick with Hope and Diller playing off each other, the friendly Japanese soldier (Kinda like McHale's Navy TV Series), and just a light hearted plot that wasn't offensive to anyone. Leonard, you must have been sleeping thru this one, because you usually like the easy going movies like I do)... I just wish they would release the others, such as Boy Did I get A Wrong Number and Critic's Choice on DVD... Enjoy the fun everyone!!

4 out of 5 stars Bob's a Blast!.......2001-03-13

This is one of my absolute favorite Bob Hope movies. The supporting cast is wonderful, and the plot is light-hearted and entertaining. I could watch this one over and over again--and have.

Curtis is fine along with Thomas Gomez and Minor Watson. Its a love triangle of course but with the added touch of the great dierctor Carol Reed.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully photographed love story in circus setting.......1999-11-20

Great circus shots in a beautiful miniature European circus surround a love triangle. Lots of tension, suspense, interesting characters and a great climax! Tremendous photography of aerial stunts and other circus action.

When a P.R. expert (Gig Young) tells him the answer lies in patching up his shaky marriage, Carter jets off to London to re-kindle the affections of his fiery Italian wife Toni (Lollobrigida) who is already planning her second marriage. But even as she begins to repeat the outrageously eccentric behaviors that split them up in the first place. Carter finds himself falling in love with the irresistible Toni all over again.

    3 out of 5 stars classic comedy.......2007-05-12

I love these two together in a comedy. The up and down relationship is very intertaining. I hadn't seen this one for over 30 years and it wasn't quite as funny as what I had remembered as a teen. I still definitely liked it and would recomend it to others.

3 out of 5 stars Rock and Gina: our ideal bedfellows.......2007-01-17

Matters of sexuality apart, Rock Hudson and Gina Lollobrigida would make highly desirable bedfellows, beautiful as they were in the mid 1960's. Melvin Frank's comedy is only average, but it has some very funny moments. Gig Young and Terry-Thomas provide good support. Lollo, dressed by Jean Louis, is a sight to behold; not to mention that her gift for comedy manages to surface here and there.

    2 out of 5 stars Not good.......2003-10-04

As a big fan of 60s comedies, I find this one seriously lacking. There's no chemistry between Rock and Gina, nothing likeable about their characters, and nothing compelling about the storyline. I do believe I laughed once during the movie however, but I can't remember why. Actually I only got this movie because it came packaged with Man's Favorite Sport, which actually IS a good and funny movie.

1 out of 5 stars Bad DVD of a Good Movie.......2003-09-04

Not genuine letterboxed. Portion of original picture missing. Read review under the orginal DVD two-pack release of Strange Bedfellows/Man's Favoite Sport.

4 out of 5 stars Gina and Rock or Rock and Gina?.......2000-04-26

This couple, Rock Hudson and Gina Lolibridgita is always fighting because she's different from him and has her own idea and stands for women's rights and then before you know they are made for each other but she also is involved with another man with hilarious results so be prepared to laugh. Find out who gets the girl by watching the movie.

3 out of 5 stars Nice letterboxed disc from Geneon.......2006-12-28

Spaghetti western collectors should know the Geneon release is a nice letterboxed, widescreen transfer. Colors are slightly faded and its non-anamporphic, but otherwise this is a fantastic looking picture for a budget label. Consequently, I was able to sit back and enjoy the film as intended. Actually it is quite funny at times, and nowhere near as bad as reviews would lead you to believe.

1 out of 5 stars Not the Film Noir "Hunt the Man Down".......2005-01-03

This is NOT the George Archainbaud/Gig Young crime story from 1950. Rather, it's a 1971 spaghetti western directed by Eugenio Martín, starring Lee van Cleef and James Mason.
My review of the Martin/van Cleef HUNT THE MAN DOWN (aka BAD MAN'S RIVER):
Awful. Terrible attempt at fusing comedy, tinkly popular tunes and spaghetti western action. Painful to watch and, because it has such a needlessly convoluted plot, almost impossible to describe. The three stars (van Cleef, Mason, and Gina Lollabrigida) look lost and a little ashamed. Not worth your time at any price.

4 out of 5 stars Beware ! One woman on the loose !.......2004-01-17

A western film that stands upside down right on its head. Many thieves and robbers, on the frontier with Mexico, in the midst of the Mexican Revolution, with Mexican soldiers and Mexican revolutionaries, with all kinds of gangsters and other outlaws, with frightened bankers who get held or blown up, with women who are nothing but entertainment. Well, nearly all of them, except one who is a master mind in getting rich on the back of the thieves and robbers, the soldiers and revolutionaries, the gangsters and outlaws, the bankers and cops when necessary. She manipulates all of them men with her charm and flesh and she gets the money when it is ripe, without even making the slightest effort, except at luring all these men into falling into her trap. And you can be sure she never shuts her trap. Brilliant and funny with a Lolobrigida that is coming of age and starting her lovely and enticing career.

5 out of 5 stars Great Classic Western Comedy.......2003-11-30

Lee Van Cleef,James Mason along with the incomparable Gina Lolobrigida star in this great, classic western comedy about 2 men attempting to rob the Mexican Governmnt of a million dollars. It's a must see!!

5 out of 5 stars CLASSIC WESTERN STARRING LEE VAN CLEEF & GINA LOLLABRIGIDA.......2003-09-21

Robber Roy, King loses his wife Alicia, to the revolutionary, soldier, Montero. Despite their rivalry, however, they collaborate in an attempt to rob the Mexican government of $1,000,000. With a great cast, performing at their best, and wonderful original sets, Bad Man's river is certainly a cut river is certainly a cut above the usual western fare.

5 out of 5 stars The Bogart film you never heard of!.......2007-06-12

That's what my brother said when I popped it into the DVD player -- he couldn't understand how he could possibly have missed it, being a big Bogart fan. It was only in the last two years that I saw it for the first time myself -- I don't know where in the heck it's been but it's a very fun shot-on-location film (Mediterranean) with just a shade of Indiana Jones-ness to it. And I have always loved Peter Lorre, who adds a lot to this particular movie. And rotten scoundrels are rampant, (wonderful acting and casting all-around), all trying to cash in on treasure! The only somewhat negative comments (2) I have are regarding a number of weird camera a
