Serenity offers perfect proof that <I>Firefly</I> deserved a better fate than premature TV cancellation. Joss Whedon's acclaimed sci-fi Western hybrid series was ideally suited (in Browncoats, of course) for a big-screen conversion, and this action-packed adventure allows Whedon to fill in the Firefly backstory, especially the history and mystery of the spaceship Serenity's volatile and traumatized stowaway, River Tam (Summer Glau). Her lethal skills as a programmed "weapon" makes her a coveted prize for the power-hungry planetary Alliance, represented here by an Operative (Chiwetel Ejiofor) who'll stop at nothing to retrieve River from Serenity's protective crew. We still get all the quip-filled dialogue and ass-kicking action that we've come to expect from the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but Whedon goes a talented step further here, blessing his established ensemble cast with a more fully-developed dynamic of endearing relationships. <I>Serenity</I>'s cast is led with well-balanced depth and humor by Nathan Fillion as Captain Mal Reynolds, whose maverick spirit is matched by his devotion to crewmates Wash (Alan Tudyk), Zoe (Gina Torres), fun-loving fighter Jayne (Adam Baldwin), engineer Kaylee (Jewel Staite), doctor Simon (Sean Maher), and Mal's former flame Inara (Morena Baccarin), who plays a pivotal role in Whedon's briskly-paced plot. As many critics agreed, Serenity offered all the fun and breezy excitement that was missing from George Lucas's latter-day Star Wars epics, and Whedon leaves an opening for a continuing franchise that never feels cheap or commercially opportunistic. With the mega-corporate mysteries of Blue Sun yet to be explored, it's a safe bet we haven't seen the last of the good ship Serenity. --Jeff Shannon
Description
A passenger with a deadly secret. Six rebels on the run. An assassin in pursuit. When the renegade crew of Serenity agrees to hide a fugitive on their ship, they find themselves in an action-packed battle between the relentless military might of a totalitarian regime who will destroy anything - or anyone - to get the girl back and the bloodthirsty creatures who roam the uncharted areas of space. But, the greatest danger of all may be on their ship. From the mind of Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel) comes a new edge-of-your-seat adventure loaded with explosive battles, gripping special effects and fantastic new worlds.
Customer Reviews:
Less boring than the TV show.......2007-06-18
I like Sci-Fi - Stargate, Battlestar, etc. A friend suggested I watch Firefly. Got the first DVD, could barely finish the episodes. Boring! So incredibly slow. The premise is okay though. So when I found out they made a movie, I checked it out. If you like the idea of the tv show but can't bare to watch it, try Serenity. It sums up the entire idea and reaches a conclusion without wasting all of your time.
I thought it was great.......2007-06-14
In my opinion, Firefly was one of the best series on TV. Too bad they screwed it up and it got cancelled. But at least they got to make a movie, and the movie was quite good. If you're a Firefly fan and have an HD player, this is a MUST HAVE.
Great movie...If you've seen the show........2007-06-14
I personally believe that Serenity was a really good movie. But only because I saw the firefly series. I had my gripes about firefly (hated the whole glorified Whore/"Companion" idea) but I really got into the characters themselves. Serenity takes off where the canceled Firefly ended. But if you are new to the whole world of Firefly/Serenity then it will definately take away about half the enjoyment of the movie. Why? Because Serenity is a "Great" 'continuation' of the series and a "Good" stand-alone movie. If you've never seen the Firefly series but watch Serenity, here are a few questions you probably will be asking after:
1. How did Mal and the crew meet each other and how did they end up on Serenity?
2. Who or what is a 'Sheperd' and why did he leave Serenity?
3. When Jayne and Mal were arguing on the ship, what "War" was he talking about that made Mal and Zoe get so upset?
4. Why did Inara leave Serenity?
These are some of the questions new-comers will probably be asking after seeing Serenity. Now Firefly fans know that these questions are all answered in the series' episodes. If you check, most of the people who gave this movie 1-3 stars have admitted to never actually seeing firefly. But I think the movie felt short and they could have added more onto it to make it more fulfilling, like doing something more with the Mal and Inara relationship (hopefully to stop her from selling her body), or show some new flashback scenes from the war of 'Serenity Valley' to answer question number 3 and further grip fans.
So why the 5 stars? Well...after seeing the Firefly series, I still think this is a pretty good movie. So if you are a firefly fan, definately pick it up. If not...it's still worth a look.
rocking good fun.......2007-06-13
A tad more violent than it needed to be, but this was a great continuation of the Firefly story. It answered many questions from the series and made the movie even more enjoyable. They pushed scientific possibility a bit far - but you're so busy enjoying the story and numerous surprises that you'll only realise it much later after the movie. Having seen the full series and movie now I hope they find a way to continue the story. If you enjoyed the story and humor of the series, you can't go wrong with the DVD.
I wish it could have gone on.......2007-06-13
I had to give less than 5 stars because I though they tried to cram waaaaaaay too much into this movie. Like most people here I loved the series, but the movie kind of let me down a little. There were one too many points where I felt like things were too convienient and explained away just to move the plot forward. Granted this is a sci-fi movie, and a fun one at that, but as a fan of the show it just left me wanting more.

Customer Reviews:
A criminally underrated conclusion to a criminally underrated series.......2007-06-07
If you're already aquainted with the greatness of Joss Whedon's cult television series "Firefly" then this is a no-brainer. "Serenity" is the best science fiction film since "The Matrix" and for true fans of the series, it is a literal dream come true. Essentially, this film is not so much a stand-alone popcorn affair so much as it is the greatest series finale in history. It's emotional, funny, action-packed, full of quirky characters both familiar and new, and just plain cool to boot. There is also a deep philosophical argument explored as the costs of personal freedom and government control are contrasted in a brilliant manner. Would you choose to live the life of a criminal if it was the only way you could be free? Does a government have the right to take any step necesssary to keep it's citizens under control and happy? "Half of writing history is covering up the truth" is just one of the memorable observations made by our heroes over the course of this journey. The plot centers around insane genius River and her older brother, Simon, who rescued her from a mysterious government facility where she was being experimented on. Part of the genius of the series (and this film) are the insane rantings of River, which begin to make sense if you pay attention. "Old men, covered in blood. It never touched them but they're drowning in it" may seem nonsensical to some, but it is a rather poetic yet eerily accurate representation of both the government officials in her universe, and in ours. The events taking place in this future are vaguely familair as plot devices, but what makes them brilliant is the way they relate to what's happening in our society. Anyhow, back to the plot: River and Simon joined the crew of Serenity, the ship captained by Malcolm Reynolds, a true hero who isn't afraid to break the rules if it means doing the right thing. Serenity's crew includes an endearing assortment of contrasting characters that all get their moments to shine in the film: Jayne the hardcore mercenary, Kailee the loveable mechanic, Mal's old war buddy Zoe, and her pilot/comedian husband Wash are all well represented. Having left Serenity since the original series, Book the minister and Inara -Malcolm's love interest who happens to be a well-respected prostitute (not to mention unbelievably gorgeous)- turn up along the way as well. The style of the universe that our heroes inhabit is still a mix of all of the cultures of "Earth-that-was", primarily american and asian, with cursing in chinese being an amusing device for letting characters express their disapproval realistically and emphatically without getting an "R" rating in the process. If you've never seen "Firefly", do not hesitate; go buy it this very moment and see what you've been missing out on, then I can guarantee that this film will blow you away. If you are just looking for a spectacle like "Star Wars", legendary action sequences like "The Matrix", or just some light sci-fi fare, you will be disappointed. This movie is both epic and personal, hilarious and heart-breaking, deeply thoughtful yet fun. It represents the fulfillment of a promise from it's creator and is a miracle unto itself that came about simply because the fans refused to let his brilliant creation die just because of a bad decision by a television executive who hated science fiction. The story behind the film is almost as uplifting as the film itself and serves to justify those of us who support the things we love, even years after they've "died". Not fitting into any particular established pop culture mold -not unlike the characters themselves-, "Firefly" and "Serenity" may have flown in under the public's radar, but for those of us who know what great entertainment is capable of, this is the stuff we live for seeing and we're happy to keep it our little secret.

"Bed of Nails" would have been a better title for this romance, an excruciating exercise that brings out all the worst in the genre. Christian Slater's performance is the high point of this flick, but his character is so obvious that even his subtle skills ultimately makes little difference. Slater plays Lewis, a florist who looks up one night during one of his habitual nocturnal walks and spies Mary Stuart Masterson weeping in a window. The next day he follows her to work and delivers a gorgeous arrangement of posies, leaving her guessing as to the identity of her secret admirer. We must wonder why Lewis pursues her with abandon, as Masterson's character Lisa seems nothing but a dull workaholic. Well, okay, she's also neurotic. First-time director-writer Michael Goldenberg's lopsided script lets us see the psychic damage harbored by both of the main characters, but doesn't make Lisa interesting enough to warrant all the attention heaped upon her, whereas Lewis is a model of perfection. Goldenberg often slips and slides over many details in the story. Since the dialogue is not particularly witty or meaningful, and the plot has pretty much withered by the second reel, there isn't much left on the screen to enjoy. <I>--Rochelle O'Gorman</I>
Description
A workaholic with unresolved issues of abandonment and trust falls in love with a widower who wants her to become a part of his family. Starring Mary Stuart Masterson and Christian Slater.

Touching Love Story For Those Who Enjoy Old Style Romance.......2007-05-19
If you are like me and love both romance and beautiful flowers and believe that somehow the two should always really go together then the low profile and little talked about love story "Bed of Roses", is an essential viewing experience. Starring a perfectly teamed Christian Slater and Mary Stuart Masterton as two seemingly ill matched individuals who find love together and learn alot about themselves in the process this drama could be seen by the cynical in this day an age as being hopelessly "old fashioned". However its charm and especially its very definite message of excepting people with all their faults and weaknesses as the unique individuals they are is truly timeless. Often dismissed as simply another "chick flick" (God I hate that term!) this is one of my favourite "romance" dramas that is ideal for members of both sexes and I find a viewing of it tends to revitalise the spirit and renew hope that real love does exist out there. Visually it is a beautiful looking film ideal for watching with a special someone containing as it does numerous shots of the most beautiful flowers imaginable and many interesting shots of New York during the Christmas season sure to create a good feeling in those watching.
Please don't believe the hype; total waste of time and insult to intelligence.......2007-04-16
Although I, like another reviewer here mentions, rely heavily on Amazon reviewers to guide me in my decision-making over mainly which movies to watch, reviews like the majority of ones presented here make me very skeptical about how much I should continue doing so. Actually, I've started selecting the lowest ratings to look at first because I'm finding in many cases those are actually more in harmony with my thoughts after seeing a movie. And this is definitely one of those cases. The Amazon review as well as the far too few negative reviews presented here reflect totally my feelings about this movie, so I will not add more except to direct you to those.
Feel good movie.......2007-04-16
Good plot. Used real life issues. All actors were great. Great ending!
Sweet, tender and poignant movie about love........2007-03-26
This makes a great date movie and is considered a "chick flick," however, it has a message for many young adults with troubled family history. No matter how horrible your family background/upbringing may have been....you can find love and feel deserving of that love! My husband and I enjoyed the movie and the message.
Absolutely Wonderful! All the reviews are right!.......2006-11-15
I'm probably just like you. I enjoy balancing "real" public opinion before I dish out the cash, and Amazon's always been my favorite place to get honest, accurate opinions. Music....electronics.....whatever.......
A seller on EBay had this disc on auction for next to nothing, and after soooo many positive reviews, I grabbed it.
Wowwwwwwwww!!!!!!
In the Soundtrack genre, there are many unique and individual types. I have always searched for the warm, relaxing, romantic melodies that are light, graceful, and musically beautiful. Silvestri, Shore, The Newmans, Kamen, Newton-Howard, Portman....people who's work really climbs into your heart. This disc is a terrific example of this type.
Even the few vocal tunes at the begginning are enjoyable.
You will be glad you made the purchase. I put mine in the computer hours ago, and as I've been surfing, the music has been wonderful. I just restarted it for the 3rd time!

Great Movie.......2007-01-09
I like buying these types of movies (One's that are not highly promoted) because they usually have decent story lines. This wasn't a movie where the men were degrading the women or the women shaking their behinds all over the place.
It was a movie of black professionals who were finding their way in their professions and personal lives. A good date movie.
Why??.......2006-12-24
I write this review as I struggle to make myself finish watching this movie. I've talked myself out of stopping it about 3 or 4 times, but I'm no quitter I'm going to persevere until the end. The story line is so disjointed and the characters are disappointingly one dimensional. I've watched some really good independent black films like Love, Sex and Eating the Bones or 30 to Life, but Fair Game so far has been a waste of my time.
Worst movie ever........2006-12-12
I try to support African American movies but when they put out garbage like this I have to let my displeasure be known. The plot was stupid and there was absolutely no chemistry whatsover between the main characters. Even the attempts at comedy were horrible. There was nothing about the characters that made you want to invest in the characters or the storyline. I just wanted the movie to be over with because I kept waiting for something to happen that would make me find some redeemable factor in this movie but nothing. Bad actors, bad acting, bad directing, and terrible writing.
I am so glad it is finally out on DVD!.......2006-11-23
Speaking as someone who was in the film, I admit I am going to be highly biased. Keeping that in mind. I loved working on this film and I loved the script. It is a wonderful romantic comedy and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes that genere.
Satisfying African-American Romantic Film.......2006-01-26
Work place romances. They can really be tricky. Gina Torres (Serenity) stars in Fair Game as a busy executive named Stacey. Her co-worker Michael is in a transitional period but clearly enjoys their tryst. After asking one of her co-workers to stay late at work they find themselves caught up in a moment of passion she dismisses as a "one time flukish thing." Their one time flukish thing turns into a multi-time thing. When Mike finds himself needing a place to stay he turns to Stacey who has vowed that their affair is a no strings attached thing. Stacey opens her apartment to Mike and let's him stay for a few days. Mike is stuck sleeping on the couch. He wants more from Stacey than she is willing to give. He goes above and beyond to impress her. When a handsome executive starts spending time with Stacey, Michael is really left to ponder what he should do next about the situation.
Fair Game is a very interesting film about a common topic that is not addressed much on the big screen. It's a really great film. Stacey and Michael have a real chemistry, but the prospect of a big promotion and other factors stand in the way of the two of them pursuing a relationship.
Fair Game won several awards on the film festival circuit. Although Gina Torres is probably the most well known cast member, Fair Game features stellar acting from Christopher B. Duncan, Kellita Smith, Michael Whaley, Terri Vaughn, Mother Love and comedian Mark Christopher Lawrence.

<I>Hair Show</I> is a lively and funny ensemble comedy set in the busy, high-pressure milieu of an upscale hair salon. As in <I>Barbershop</I> or <I>Empire Records</I>, a handful of idiosyncratic characters share the shop's load but are individually defined by peculiar obsessions or circumstances. Jun Ni (Keiko Agena), for instance, just wants to learn to cook for the husband who adores her yet who is starving because of her failures in the kitchen. Peaches (Mo'Nique) is trying to save her bacon from the IRS agents hounding her for $50,000 in back taxes. At the center of the story is Peaches' rivalrous relationship with sister Angela (Kellita Smith), who took a sizable inheritance from her late grandmother (Peaches got no cash from Grandma's will) and built the salon in which brassy Peaches might be the most talented stylist. Crisply directed by Leslie Small and co-produced by Magic Johnson, <I>Hair Show</I> is lightly but genuinely rewarding. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>
Description
When hair stylist Peaches (Mo'Nique) arrives in Beverly Hills to get reacquainted with her sister, Angela (Kellita Smith of "The Bernie Mac Show"), sparks fly! Angela finds out Peaches owes $50,000 in back taxes and is on the run. So the two sisters join forces to fight off a pesky rival salon owner in a show-stopping competition to win a cash prize for Peaches and bragging rights at the city's annual hair show.

Pretty good movie..........2006-07-28
...but I see why it went straight to DVD. It's not BarberShop nor is it BeautySHop, so don't purchase it because of that. This movie has it's own redeeming values..
The plot is essentially good sister does good...bad sister, does bad, runs away from problems and tries to do good.
I enjoyed the plot, the characters and the redeeming theme.
As usual Mo'Nique did her thing with the comedic talent...and it was equally appealing seeing Kelita Smith broaden her acting chops.
BBW- Big Beautifu Women.......2006-04-19
I really enjoyed this movie because it shows that just because you are big and a yourself doesn't mean you can't get the guy. Monique always makes me feel that no matter what size I am, I AM Somebody and a beauty to behold. The movie was simply made, but I enjoyed the friendliness. It was great. Monique, you go girl!!
Lane Kim (Keiko Agena)-.......2005-10-22
I got this movie because after a search it was the only one I could find for Keiko Agena that plays Lane Kim on Gilmore girls TV progam. She plays a totally different charactor in this movie though, one that does not smile much and does not seem to be a very happy person. I like the charactor she plays on the Gilmore girls a lot better. At least there they use costume to get a little comic effect out of her. She tends to hide her body and not use it as much as she could. She would be a lot closer to using her body for comedy like Lucy or Julia Roberts. She would have more distance to go to be really sexy looking and even then she would be sexy in a funny way. Perhaps she needs someone like Garry Marshall to really help her to develop herself and to more solid back up rolls like she does as Rorys best frind on the Gilmore's. It would be nice if she at least got more bit parts like Sookie. You tend to she her show up all over the place. Nothing big but at least they invite her onto the set for a day for a little bit of something.
Go Nikki.......2005-09-15
I loved this movie. It was funny. I loved Monique and all the other characters. It was a slight repeat of Beauty Shop but other than that it is a funny, sweet movie.
Put on your shelf.......2005-08-02
This movie was very touching between sisters that truly care for one another.

Description
Fiend of Dope Island (1961, 76 min.) - Former screen Tarzan Bruce Bennett is the Fiend of Dope Island, a sadistic maniac named Charlie Davis who lords over a tiny Caribbean isle with his trusty bullwhip. Not content with smuggling guns and growing marijuana, Charlie also hires sexy dancer Glory La Verne to "entertain him" at his flea-shack of a cantina. Instead, Glory zeroes in on Charlie's main man, Davey, and the two lead a native uprising against Charlie who retaliates by going... well, completely berserk. "Pagan Island" (1960, 58 min.) - Shipwrecked sailor William Stanton finds himself the only man among a tribe of semi-naked man-hating women when he washes up on Pagan Island! Falling in love with Nani Maki, "the bride of the Sea God," he soon discovers that his rival for her affection is...a giant clam.

The wildest scenery-chewing you will EVER see!.......2002-08-15
OK, this one takes the all-time prize for over-the-top, pure wild-man scenery chewing. In fact, as the case itself claims, Bennet doesn't just CHEW the scenery, he swallows it whole! It begins with our "fiend" pulling out his whip (any more obvious Freudian symbolism would be pointless) and dealing a few lashes to someone because......hey, he don't NEEEED no steeeekin' reason! As he proudly proclaims, he owns EVERYthing on the island! And since his "staff" is about the most lame-brained crew this side of the Three Stooges, he's a busy man, whippin' everyone and everyTHING in sight. But that's before the girl arrrives, and then he REALLY goes berzerk! Great fun - I can't recall EVER seeing such vein-popping, chest-thumping, rip-roaring hyper-machoism. And that's just the FIRST flick! Minor, very brief flashes of toplessness, but this isn't one for the kiddos anyway. Sets a new standard - makes John Agar in "Brain From Planet Arous" look as if he were on Thorazine. You HAVE to see it!
Hams and giant clams.......2002-07-31
A good, rather unusual double-feature from Something Weird. The theme of this disc is "tropicana," and its contents, geographically speaking, span from the Caribbean to the South Seas.
The main features are artistically unambitious but entertaining. FIEND is a fast-moving melodrama about the spectacular self-destruction of a small Caribbean island's whip-cracking tyrant, played by Bruce Bennett. Tania Velia, aka "the Yugoslavian bombshell," is imported to dance for The Fiend, but she's repelled by him and hooks up with an undercover narcotics agent, played by Robert Bray. Velia is gorgeous, and the director of FIEND made the most of her assets. Bennett gives a very vigorous performance, coming off like a psychotic who's been knocked on the head many, many times. The script is lousy, though, and the film suffers from a weak storyline. Arguably the sensationalism of all the brawls and whippings, and the presence of Tania Velia, make up for the film's most serious flaws. It's basically a fun but dumb movie.
PAGAN ISLAND, directed by Barry Mahon, is a 58-minute endurance test. A bevy of beautiful girls wear garlands of flowers and grass skirts. Into their feminine island paradise stumbles a shipwrecked sailor, who becomes infatuated with one of the locals. There's some ceremonial dancing and an underwater battle with a giant clam, and a very bizarre closing scene suggesting that the hero has succumbed to, or been tempted by, necrophilia.
The acting is generally terrible. The island girls speak "pidgin English," supposedly learned from a previous visitor. Their grammar is terrible, but they never fail to make sense, and their vocabularies are incredibly huge. Basically they talk like normal adult Americans who've chosen to eliminate unnecessary articles and tenses from their speech. It's impossible to take these "island girls" seriously. But they are fun to see and hear. The Queen of the island speaks every line as if she's reading from a cue card, and her lack of enthusiasm is incredible. She seems almost suicidal. The "plot" of PAGAN ISLAND involves a proposed marriage between the shipwrecked guy and his chosen girl, whose religion makes the marriage problematic.
More valuable are the "Goona Goona" short features, most dating from the 1930s. They look like tame National Geographic documentaries today, but 60 years ago the topless female was a rare cinematic commodity, and these films of Balinese women going about their chores au natural were marketed with less innocent "exploitation" films. There's also a really dirty short with simulated sex in a bamboo hut and narration loaded with double-entendre jokes.
Overall this is an entertaining and very unusual collection of films from Something Weird. If you buy it, or already own it, look for the "Easter egg," a trailer for Zorita the stripper's exciting film "I Married A Savage"! It's sobering to learn that Zorita was a native of Youngstown, Ohio.
The movie stands up to it's title!.......2002-06-22
A 1960 black & white that actually plays just like it's title suggests. Right from the start there is a fiend of a dope-island with brooding natives and a torch of a woman not accustomed to the sandy confines of a...dope-island.
The script was exceptionally good (in that it was bad and full of one-liners) and the acting was over-done with competence.
Easily one of the best b-movies in the collection. Keeps your attention and doesn't drag.
