Roger Moore was introduced as James Bond in this 1973 action movie featuring secret agent 007. More self-consciously suave and formal than predecessor Sean Connery, he immediately reestablished Bond as an uncomplicated and wooden fellow for the feel-good '70s. This film also marks a deviation from the more character-driven stories of the Connery years, a deliberate shift to plastic action (multiple chases, bravura stunts) that made the franchise more of a comic book or machine. If that's not depressing enough, there's even a good British director on board, Guy Hamilton (<I>Force 10 from Navarone</I>). The story finds Bond taking on an international drug dealer (Yaphet Kotto), and while that may be superficially relevant, it isn't exactly the same as fighting supervillains on the order of <I>Goldfinger</I>. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

4 out of 5 stars I liked it, for a Moore movie.......2007-06-14

I just thought the movie was well made, and Moore did a good job in this one.

3 out of 5 stars Moore has done better.......2007-04-23

Live And Let Die was very odd. The Voodoo meets drugs plot was kinda stupid. Some of the action scenes were good. Some were down right cheesy. This is one of Moore's weaker Bond films. Id rather see Bond try and save the word, not fight Voodoo warriors. This reminded me of the so-so Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom a little. Such a departure of what made the seried great. And it does not go the series justice. Better than the extrememly lame Moonraker. But well below The Spy Who Loved Me, For Your Eyes Only ans a couple others Roger Moore stared in.

4 out of 5 stars Moore's First Bond Outing, and The Decks Are In His Favor!.......2007-04-01

Out goes Connery, in comes Moore, Roger Moore as James Bond. The first Brit to play the British super agent. Roger Moore makes a suave and confident debut, as Bond chases after some devious drug dealers and Solitaire. Like Diamonds are Forever, this one delves into the 70's silliness factor, but totally delivers with better staged action sequences, especially THE prototypical motor boat chase (awesome stuntwork in this one!). Jane Seymour makes a lovely addition as Miss Solitaire. Yaphet Kotto makes for a smooth and menacing dual role as Kananga and Mr. Big. The late Julius Harris is totally "disarming" as towering henchman Tee Hee. Geoffrey Holder (The Un-Cola Guy) has the time of his life as undead henchman Baron Samedi. Clifton James is funny and more tolerable here as redneck Sheriff J. W. Pepper, than his reprisal in The Man With the Golden Gun. David Hedison is the best yet cast as Bond's CIA pal Felix Leiter. The hit theme song, superbly performed by Paul McCartney and Wings, totally ROCKS! Love that magnetic/buzz saw watch, man!

3 out of 5 stars Bond's Transition: Moore Delivers Plastic Action & Humor, But We've Seen Better.......2007-03-24

Given the success and rage of blaxploitation films in the early 1970s, the producers decided to jump on the bandwagon in order to take the series in a new direction with LIVE AND LET DIE. It is, in many ways, a shocking film in how far away from the original mold it takes the series. This is particularly strange given that Guy Hamilton (who churned out GOLDFINGER, one of the best Bond films). For starters, we have a new Bond in the form of Roger Moore. He has his detractors and his supporters, splitting roughly along the divide of what people want out of the films: suspense & espionage or fantastic action & humor. If you love the latter, Roger Moore delivers in spades, his tongue firmly set in his cheek and an army of one-liners at the ready. LIVE AND LET DIE focuses on action and humor, Bond having become a sort of ridiculous character by now. For my tastes, Connery had the ability to hold the series just above the ridiculous, whereas by Bond's eighth outing, he is drowning in it. Additionally, the film has a decidedly blaxploitationist theme. Bond is now dealing with a black heroine supplier, surrounded by an army of jive-talking black henchmen, complete with pimp suits, "pimpmobiles," and Shaft attitude. Perhaps some will enjoy this lively romp through 1970s culture. Others might even congratulate the producers for being so timely and capitalizing on the trend. But it horribly dates the film, while at the same time making LIVE AND LET DIE look cheap and cheesy.

After the opening "gun barrel" sequence (now, of course, featuring Roger Moore), we are immediately taken to the United Nations, where we witness the interesting assassination of a British representative. We quickly cut to a New Orleans funeral march and again witness the assassination of another agent. Finally, we are taken to an island called San Monique and witness the voodoo killing of a third man, tied to a stake. It is a short opening teaser and Bond is notably absent. The opening titles follow in the voodoo theme, featuring a skull in flames and the bodies of black women with painted designs. McCartney's theme is fantastic and is definitely one of the stronger songs in the entire series.

The plot of LIVE AND LET DIE is rather down-to-earth, but with certain elements blown out of proportion to render the film an over-the-top feel. Several British agents have been killed (in the opening teaser) who were monitoring the operations of a certain Dr. Kananga (Yaphet Kotto), the dictator of a small Caribbean island called San Monique. Bond travels to New York, the site of the first assassination, where Kananga is visiting the UN. Upon arrival, Bond once again meets up with Felix Leiter of the CIA. (Interestingly, in DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER, Leiter is noticeably not fond of Bond and is exasperated by his antics. But here, there is no such animosity. They are best of friends again). Bond soon finds himself in the clutches of Mr. Big, a man known as Kananga's US gangster connection, who runs a chain of "Fillet of Soul" restaurants throughout the country. It is here that Bond first meets his girl Solitaire (Jane Seymour), a beautiful tarot reader who has the ability to predict the future. It is Solitaire's ability that has enabled Mr. Big and Kananga to stay one step ahead of Bond's operations. Bond manages to escape and travels to San Monique to track down Kananga. He seduces Solitaire (in addition to his contact Rosie Carver (Gloria Hendry)) and finally figures out Kananga's plans. Kananga has produced two tons of heroine on his secret plantation, guarded against invasion by secret nets and the islanders' fear of voodoo and the occult (reminiscent of the islander's fear of Dr. No's "dragon" in DR. NO). Kananga plans to distribute the heroine in the United States for free, both flooding the market to put his competitors out of business while at the same time doubling the number of addicts in the country. With the mob out of the way, Kananga will be able to run the heroine business in the US for many years to come. That is, of course, unless Bond can foil his plans!

LIVE AND LET DIE is notable for the down-to-earth nature of its evil villain. Neither Blofeld or SPECTRE is anywhere to be seen. We no longer have an evil supervillain capable of crushing the world in a single blow. Instead, we have a drug-trafficker who wants to rule the market. Of course, he is a drug trafficker who has an incredibly elaborate hideout and an incredibly elaborate operation. (Though, why it is so elaborate is never really understood, other than the need for Bond to fight a villain of some size, power, and eccentricity.) Another feature of LIVE AND LET DIE that pops out is the explicit attempt to make Roger Moore's Bond different from Sean Connery's. Bond never orders a martini throughout the entire film (he prefers bourbon with no ice). The mission briefing occurs in Bond's private residence and Q makes no appearance whatsoever (although, he is referred to in reference to Bond's electromagnetic watch). Finally, Bond no longer has his cigarette case, choosing to smoke cigars instead. It is all a bit jarring.

Another funny aspect of the film occurs during the terrific boat chase sequence. The sequence is really quite spectacular and is certainly worthy of a Bond film. But for some strange reason, the producers decided to insert Sherriff J.W. Pepper (Clifton James), a stereotypical dim-witted Southern sheriff who seems to be the inspiration for Sheriff Buford T. Justice of SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT fame. In fact, I felt like I was in a prequel to the BANDIT series during this whole escapade, in which this ignorant Southern sheriff attempts to catch Bond in a high-speed chase, only to be foiled by various wrecks and problems (supposedly to the audience's delight). It's clearly meant to be a bit of comic relief, I suppose, but it falls flat. Just like Kananga's henchman Tee Hee (Julius Harris) falls flat with his ridiculous looking metal pincer hook. Just as Kananga's shark pool (why does he have sharks?) and the "explosive" ending falls flat.

Roger Moore ushered in a new era for Bond films. The action in LIVE AND LET DIE is, on the whole, quite good. The stunts are great and the pursuit sequences are particularly fun. But Bond is a bit light for my tastes here. I preferred the Bond films when they took themselves more seriously and tried to create suspense. This is escapist entertainment. Thus, if you enjoyed the Roger Moore era, you will enjoy LIVE AND LET DIE. The Ultimate Edition looks much fantastic and the sound is great. Included are a number of documentaries about the making of the film, as well as various footage of Moore on the set. It all comes down to what you want from Bond. There is no way to achieve perfect continuity throughout a film series that spans decades and involves several different actors in the lead role. If you enjoyed the class of the Connery films, you will probably not like the change evidenced here. But if you're willing to accept a light-hearted, tongue-in-cheek Bond, Roger Moore certainly delivers. I prefer Connery. But to each his own.

3 out of 5 stars Odd Bond.......2007-02-24

This probably the oddest Bond film of the whole series. Of course one has to take intoacoount that it was made in the early 70's and it portrays a feeling of the period but still the producers tried to make Moore different in every aspect from Connery. I am not a fun of Roger Moore but this film is quite interesting as it is the closest that the series has ever come into becoming a cult film. An extra bonus are the scenes shot in the grand old south that are quite interesting.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2007-04-11

Would a man change for something better? Nice suggestion. Time brings on change I find this very unrealistic though. Good plot. I like the movie because there was very little subjective thoughts in it. This movie is a good way to going back to the days when tv was for children too.

5 out of 5 stars For Love of Sidney.......2007-03-31

This movie portrayed a successful, professional black business man in the 60's - -how refreshing. Sidney Poitier was not surprisingly, impressive, powerful and sexy!

Terrific movie, good acting by all.

5 out of 5 stars FOR LOVE OF IVY.......2007-03-13

WHAT ELSE CAN YOU SAY ABOUT A SIDNEY POITIER MOVIE, BUT HOW WONDERFUL IT IS TO SEE AGAIN AND AGAIN. THIS ONE RANKS UP THERE WITH "IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT", AND "LILLIES OF THER FIELD". SO I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT FOR OTHERS TO ENJOY.

5 out of 5 stars FOR LOVE OF IVY.......2007-02-13

ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL. A REAL "CHICK FLICK", OR, FOR ANYONE WHO DOESN'T MIND A GOOD LOVE STORY! I LOVE SYDNEY POITIER AND ABBEY LINCOLN IN THIS FILM. HOWEVER, A MUCH YOUNGER BEAU BRIDGES REMINDS YOU OF WHAT A GREAT ACTOR HE IS, AND CARROLL O'CONNOR -- ALTHOUGH ONLY SEEN IN JUST A FEW SCENES -- FULLY COMMANDS HIS ROLE AS THE FATHER.

5 STARS WITHOUT A DOUBT!

5 out of 5 stars "A Commanding Performance".......2007-02-13

Sidney Poitier is absolutely wonderful in this movie. I especially loved the end because he turns over a new leaf! This shows he didn't really like his night job at all, and that a good woman can help a good man see his true potential for better things. I really enjoyed watching it.

Shot on the streets of New York, writer-director Larry Cohen captures the bustle and color of the city in this violent, low-budget crime film. Ambitious Tommy Gibbs (a swaggering, self-confident Fred Williamson) has risen from shoeshine boy to Harlem crime lord, but he wants a bigger piece of the pot. With a racist, high-ranking cop (Art Lund) in his pocket, he begins his expansion with a bloody takeover bid but finds himself betrayed from within and the target of both the cops and the mob. Cohen invests this fast-paced tale (partially inspired by the 1930 gangster classic <I>Little Caesar</I> with a touch of <I>Scarface</I>) with colorful characters (notably a hustling religious leader played by D'Urville Martin), high energy, and a scruffy style. <I>Black Caesar</I> is one of the most entertaining movies to come from the 1970s explosion of low-budget black cast genre pictures, more commonly known as "blaxploitation" films. <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Tommy Gibbs Is One Bad Mobster.......2007-04-11

Taking its cues from a pair of classic mobster movies - Little Caesar (1930) and Scarface: The Shame of the Nation (1932) - Black Caesar aptly shows the blur between organized crime and crime fighting, with the impact reverberating through society.

Fred "The Hammer" Williamson magnificently portrays Tommy Gibbs, who - as a child - is facing straight down life's dead end street in a cold, uncaring city after being crippled by a racist cop; that is until he channels his ambition into the hustle for survival.

Tommy - who is equal parts gangster & Robin Hood - claws his way to the top of crime world, but the rules of the game never stay the same and betrayal by mobsters & cops is always right around the corner. The movie does a good job in depicting Tommy's complex character and who ultimately should carry the tag as "criminals."

The outstanding soundtrack is composed by James Brown & Fred Wesley, with Lyn Collins deliver a tour-de-force lead vocal in Mama Feelgood.

Black Caesar was released in February 1973 and its sequel, Hell Up in Harlem, debuting 10 months later. In 1974, Williamson - a former AFL star - was briefly part of the Monday Night Football broadcast team.

Willamson's nickname "The Hammer" came from the forearm shots he gave opposing players on the pro gridiron. Black Caesar finds Williamson tackling the lead role with a zeal that has made Tommy Gibbs eponymous with Celluloid gangsters.

3 out of 5 stars It's Okay but nothing special .......2007-03-13

After about two viewings of Black Caesar I am rather disappointed with the results. The movie in hearled by many on amazon and by critics as being one of the better so-called blaxpoltation movies. Despite all the recommendations, I was not overly impressed by Black Caesar.

The movie does have many important chracters, elements, and plot but what makes the movie suffer is the bad acting of Fred Williamson. Williamson's preformance is much too wooden and flat to bring interest into a figure like Tommy Gibbs. Williamson is not alone either with most of his supporting cast providing little substance. The notable exception is the racist Irish cop played by Art Lund.

The script was written by a white[I am guessing Jewish] Larry Cohen and it definately shows. The dialogue is flat, boring, and unrealistic for the 50's Harlem setting. The script also is severly flawed by the same instances.

Black Caesar, while not being an awful film, has very little entertainment value. Many films actually are worse than Black Caesar but have a great amount of entertainment value. Black Caesar aspires to be a serious gangster film but falls from glory. Quite disappointing considering the freshness of the story. The story of a ghetto kid rising up in the mafia underworld would be compelling even in modern cinema.
For many that might not know the movie is supposed to be loosely based upon real life black gangsters named Nikki Barnes and Frank Matthews. Ironically, Frank Matthews was a gangster from the 60's-70's that ran most of the ghettoes in NYC including Harlem.

5 out of 5 stars A tough, gritty blaxploitation classic not to be missed.......2005-06-05

Black Caesar (1973) is one heck of a good movie. I hate the term blaxploitation that is used to describe movies of this genre because it implies that these sorts of films are somehow second-class entries in the world of cinema. Black Caesar is a first-class ride from start to finish, taking as much from classic gangster films of the 1930s and 1940s as it does from earlier blaxploitation films such as Shaft. Larry Cohen gave us a tough, mean, dirty, gritty film that tells it and shows it like it is: plenty of cursing, gunplay, blood, profanity, nudity, and racism. I have heard that the starring role was originally written for Sammy Davis, Jr. Nobody loved Sammy more than I do, but there's just no way he could have done the things that Tommy Gibbs does effectively. A lot of people deride the acting skills of Fred Williamson, which makes no sense to me; the man is just fantastic in this film.

Tommy (Williamson) grew up on the streets of Harlem, where the living was hard. When a corrupt, racist cop smashed up his leg at a pay-off exchange gone wrong, young Tommy's future was set. Eight years in prison taught him everything he needed to know to pull off his master plan of becoming the man who runs Harlem. Just after he limps back into town, he scores a mafia hit in broad daylight and uses that audacious act to nose his way into the local Family. Back then, the Mafia didn't make a habit of embracing blacks, no matter how useful they could be. All Tommy asks for is a block in Harlem to call his own; he gets it, and a new reign of terror begins as Tommy and his associates begin cleaning house. At first, they talk about helping the blacks in the community at the same time, but this whole thing is really just about the money and the power. Ironically, Tommy finds himself working with the same slimy cop who broke his leg as a youth, but he's got the guy by the short hairs thanks to his acquisition of certain evidence against him.

As you might expect, a couple of blocks in Harlem is just the beginning for Tommy. He quickly expands his operation and puts the screws to the Italians running the show in New York. He becomes, for all intents and purposes, "the man" and gains control of all of Harlem. All the power and money can't make him happy, however; no one seems to appreciate the things Tommy can give them, especially his mother and his wife. As things start unraveling in his personal life, he is set up for a fall - and his Italian "friends" are ready and willing to take him down. The final half hour of the movie is nothing short of intense, as Tommy tries to deal with betrayal and simply stay alive. His final encounter with the racist cop who has tormented him for so many years makes cinematic history, as far as I'm concerned.

The music makes this fantastic film even better, as the Godfather of Soul, James Brown, supplies the funky soundtrack. Songs such as Down and Out in New York City and Mama's Dead sharply define pivotal moments and make sure the film always fires on all cylinders. It's hard to believe Black Caesar was filmed in only 18 days, especially given some of the elaborate chase scenes taking place on New York streets. This is a masterpiece of a low-budget film. Maybe a couple of the sociological aspects of the film don't play as effectively as they did back in 1973, but Black Caesar has really lost nothing of its raw power and intensity over the years.

1 out of 5 stars Bloody Awful!.......2007-05-28

What can I say about this movie...Don't do it people, just don't do it.
Buy it that is. If you have to see it, borrow it if a friend has it, but don't pay good money for it. The first Pumpkinhead was I believe a good story, not great, but enjoyable nonetheless. This, this was just...Words fail me. Need I say more!

5 out of 5 stars underated movie.......2007-02-04

i dont know why people hate this movie so much. i think its a pretty good movie and it has some cool special effects.

1 out of 5 stars Pumpkinhead? I think not........2007-01-29

Being a big fan of the original, I watched this movie expecting what the title promised: A sequel. Instead I got a movie with bad acting and a plot that had absolutely nothing to do with the original. There are a few good death scenes in this film, but the cheesy ending ruins whatever saving power those deaths would have had. Do yourself a favor and skip straight to the third installment.

5 out of 5 stars nice sequal.......2007-01-01

great sequal to an awesome horror picture. Absolute gore fest, with a cool story, how can you go wrong?!?!

3 out of 5 stars What did you expect?.......2006-02-24

It's a horror movie and it's good for its genre, it's all about the creature.

Fred Williamson returns as Tommy Gibbs, the self-styled Godfather of Harlem in Larry Cohen's quickly made sequel to the low-budget <I>Black Caesar</I>. The film opens with a different perspective on the finale from the earlier film, this time with Gibbs surviving an assassination attempt with the help of his estranged father (Julius Harris), who becomes Tommy's new chief lieutenant in his rebuilt organization. Tommy takes his revenge on those who set him up but faces a new threat from within as the corrupt DA partners with an ambitious gang member to take Tommy down. It's not going to be as easy as they think. Shooting on NYC streets and locations, Cohen punches up the slim rise-and-fall/revenge story line with gritty action, a driving pace, and edgy, always-on-the-move, hand-held camera work. The production feels rushed at times and the performances don't have the energy of the previous film, but Cohen doesn't give you much time to think about it with his speeding plot and machine-gun editing, moved along nicely with help from Edwin Starr's funky score. <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>

Description

Tougher than Shaft and smoother than Superfly, this high-voltage sequel to Black Caesar explodes with enough action to incinerate New York City. Packed with machine-gun mayhem and riveting adventure, Hell up in Harlem is nothing less than a modern-day tribute to the classic 30s gangster film. Fred Williamson (Original Gangstas) is Tommy Gibbs, a fearless, bulletproof tough guy who blasts his way from the gutter to become the ultimate soul brother boss. When he steals a ledger with the name of every crooked cop and official on the mob's payroll, he becomes the most hunted man in the city. Enlisting the aid of his father and an army of Harlem hoods, Gibbs goes from defense to offense, launching a deadly attack on his enemies that sets off a violent chain reaction from Harlem all the way to the Caribbean, climaxing in one of the hottest turf-war shoot-outs in Hollywood history.

4 out of 5 stars Freddie Gibbs is Back ! ! !.......2006-05-17

This was the infinitely more popular sequal to BLACK CAESAR (American International Films and Blaxploitation's answer to THE GODFATHER.) In truth, BLACK CAESAR is really where the story is at... but HELL UP IN HARLEM is a lot more visually exciting in terms of costumes and action. Basically it takes up where CAESAR ended finding every loose string it could, and using them for HK style movie cut fast paced action and chase scenes. As for the soundtrack... you can get it on CD now(!) CEASAR's soundtrack was by JB - - but I think Edwin Starr actually gave him a good run for his money capturing all that Starsky and Hutch meets SPEED type action...

Whatever you do, if you really want to appreciate the campy element of this film, be sure to see PART ONE first... and you'll realize how ridiculous the story in this one is (especially the extremes to which it went to keep certain actors working as well as others who were unavailable) - - but enjoy it just as much ! (In the end though, nothing will ever beat Glory Hendry getting the afro wig knocked over her head in CAESAR... but still, Tommy Gibb's dad turned (occasionally bedwetting) gangster ain't so bad either !

1 out of 5 stars Pathetic piece of trash...I'd rather see Amos and Andy or Beulah. .......2006-01-02

I mean this stuff was horrible. The minute the man put the gun up to the little boy's temple, I was out of this picture and I mean way out. That kind of stuff should have been edited out of this pic. And speaking of the editing, this picture was edited to not make sense by having certain scenes that have nothing to do with the premise of the film to sadly become a part of this abysmal movie. On the dvd's special feature as to how the film was made, the director, Mr. Cohen stated that the editor doesn't include this picture on his resume and rightfully so. This picture was a disgrace to filmmaking in general and ought to be shown to NYU film students as to how you should not make a movie.

There were certain scenes that got underneath my skin such as the one were the white guy gets hung by Gibbs--Gibbs is the main character in the film, the black hero-- by using a necktie as a rope. A scene, which in my opinion, was way over the top. How can Gloria Hendry --a fine actress with a long resume-- prostitute her acting abilities into a film such as this? How can Margaret Avery--another stellar actress largely known for-- do the same thing as well?!?

Some of the blaxploitation films from the 1970's are not as bad as this partiuclar one; Some provide a well thought out script lines and stories but why do they always cast white characters as evil, demonic and uncaring individuals about to unleash fifty tons of heroin into the entire black population? It seems that a lot of these films from that period operate on that same premise, give or take. Why is it that black and white chacters can't come together--like Mel Gibson and Danny Glover did in Lethal Weapon-- to defeat a common nemesis? It would be refreshing to see a movie from that period with such a theme.

I guess the only redeeming factor of this picture was the soundtrack featuring Edwin Starr. Starr really put all of it into the music.

4 out of 5 stars Have A Cigar.......2006-01-01

Hell Up In Harlem w/Fred "The Hammer" Williamson and directed by the one and only, Larry Cohen! If that alone doesn't make you hit the purchase button, then the hell with ya. Harlem continues pretty much immediately after Black Caesar left off. The very last scene in Caesar is changed a bit-he's no longer beaten by a mob-in order to continue the story. Tommy still has the list of corrupt officials, and naturally the corrupt officials still want the thing. Tommy's dad, a minor character in the first film, is now a major player as he goes through a big change from humble old guy to big city crime boss. Tommy's ex is still hanging around, but she's pretty much treated like a doormat the entire time, and Tommy only seems to care once she's already dead. He finds a new spouse though, a religious chick who seems to jump in the sack with Tommy a little too easily(not that much different from real life I suppose). Tommy tries to leave his crime life behind, but do you think that actually works? Once a traitorous schmuck takes over Tommy's old territory, kills his dad and attempts to kill Tommy, well there's hell to pay. Hell Up In Harlem, that is! Tommy goes into Rambo mode in the last half hour of the film. This sequel is more action oriented than Black Caesar. Caesar, like Scarface, was more of a crime drama about how a small time crook makes it big. Harlem is more focused on the butt kickin', and The Hammer has no problem dishing it out. Good times.

3 out of 5 stars Decent sequel to the dynamite first film--.......2006-09-18

Army veteran Slaughter's latest adventure doesn't take him to South America (incongruously referenced as Mexico here), but there's still plenty of trouble to be found in the U.S.

The plot here follows a bungled Mob hit on Slaughter that ends up killing a good friend of his, and Slaughter's efforts to get revenge. Black Action Movie genre veterans abound in this film: Gloria Hendry ("Black Belt Jones", "Live & Let Die") is the leading lady here, Marcia. Brock Peters is Reynolds, a cop who thinks some of his superiors are on the take. They are, and the Mob boss behind them is Ed McMahon, aka Duncan. Don Stroud is Kirk, the lead henchman, and Slaughter's main foil here.

Again, a list of kickback recipients figures into the plot: Dick Anthony Williams (billed here as Richard) is Joe Creole, a pimp and professional burglar for hire(!), who becomes Slaughter's temporary partner in heisting Duncan's ledgers listing the politicians and other public officials receiving payoffs. This leads to a game of cat-and-mouse between Slaughter and Kirk, and the violent climax in one of Duncan's nightclubs.

There are almost as many fight scenes here as in the first film; the opening sequence somehow combines a horse race and a "fly-by" shooting by crop-duster. In keeping with genre standards, the women here are gorgeous and (mostly) of loose virtue. Here, Slaughter gets twice the love action, as he beds a palm-reader early on, in addition to Marcia later. There is also a hilarious Scatman Crothers cameo as a numbers man. McMahon as Duncan gets less to do than you would think-- also, unlike many Blaxploitation villains, he's not portrayed as a racist (that's Kirk's department): but seeing the Tonight Show sidekick as a crime lord is still amusing unto itself. We still don't get much of a glimpse into Slaughter's background (besides being ex-Army with a private arsenal, just what does he do for a living?); alas, such intellectual concerns are perhaps unnecessary to enjoy the fisticuffs and gunplay...

4 out of 5 stars Much Better Than "Slaughter".......2002-06-11

A lot of people feel that the original "Slaughter" is the best one, but "Rip Off" is a much superior sequel. This is still a "revenge flick", but the characters are far more intersting. Jim Brown gets to have alot more fun and alot more sex. The added bonus is Dick Anthony Williams portrayal as a Pimp/Burgular who helps Slaughter bring down the Mob. The only downside to this one is that most of the songs from James Brown's classic soundtrack are missing from the movie.

2 out of 5 stars Not So Exciting: See the First "Slaughter" & Stella Instead.......2002-03-11

"Slaughter" may not be exactly a first-rate action film, but it still can be proud of its own energy and Stella Stevens. Its quickly-made sequel has none of them; instead, you got Ed McMahon as a villain. Oh no....

This time again some crime syndicate tries to kill Jim Brown aka. Slaughter by shooting from a flying airplane. Instead, his friend got killed, so again Slaughter begins his own vendetta to get the man behind the killing. As usual, FBI got involved, and as usual, he has a girlfriend (Gloria Hendry) to protect.

Though action scenes themselves are not bad, McMahon of "Tonight Show" as baddie is as incredible casting as Demi Moore in "Scarlet Letter." Well, Jim Brown is as cool as ever, but there's nothing exciting about he film. The actions come too few and far between to raise the film's tension too the level of other blaxploitation films. Too ordinary.

Try to spot Valda Hansen (credited as Hanson), remembered by some movie fans as one of the friendly circle surrounding Edward Wood Jr. -- fondly called "the worst movie director" -- and herself star of his unbelievable "Night of the Ghouls."

I bought a VHS tape, but it MAY contain a different soundtrack from CD's or DVD's. As I have not listened to or seen either CD or DVD of "Slaghter's Rip-Off," I'm not quite sure, but the IMDB site shows the existence of the alternate take of the film, which uses a different soundtrack. Some part of the soundtrack of VHS tape, interestingly, clearly uses the same songs you can hear in "Coffy," including the instrumental version of that famous theme song. Very curious.

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad Brainless AIP Jim Brown Vehicle.......2001-03-06

Though the original is preferred if only for some stunning Stella Stevens nude scenes, this is pretty entertaining on its own terms. Unfortunately, Ed McMahon (!) plays it straight in the bad guy role, when I was really hoping for some of the ol' "John P. Ryan As the Fake Nathan White" scenery chewing.

Customer Reviews:

Good times.

Fred Williamson is the man. He was the sexiest african american actor of the 70's..and still sexy today..:-)

It was a great sequel. The James Brown sound tracks were right on! I would suggest buying the 2 DVD special. It's a great deal. I've seen Black Ceasar and Hell up in Harlem sold for a lot more.

I will always love Fred Williamson. If you are Fred Williams fan..you will like him in One down..two to go" the "Kill Reflex".."Bucktown". I can go on and on.

I own every film that Fred Williamson has been in.
