Description

The clock is ticking for Johnny Depp in Nick of Time, a twist-filled, race-against-time thriller directed by John Badham (Drop Zone, Saturday Night Fever). And indeed it is a race, filmed in "real time" so that onscreen events unfold minute by nail-biting minute as they would in real life. No sooner does accountant Gene Watson (Depp) arrive at L.A.'s Union station with his six-year-old daughter than he's plunged into a nightmare. Two shadowy strangers (Christopher Walken, Roma Maffia) separate Watson from his little girl, slap a gun into his hand and present a devil's bargain: kill a top government official before she leaves a nearby political rally... or never again see his beloved child.

1 out of 5 stars ok, but pretty basic...........2007-05-26

This story is to commen these days. I got board.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad, but it's no "24" either..........2007-05-06

Nick of Time was a bit of a disappointment considering the make-up of the cast, Johnny Depp and Christopher Walken among others, though by no means is it a bad movie.
A man is blackmailed into assassinating the governor of California within an hour and a half or else his daughter will be killed. The movie takes place in real time and does bring to mind the masterpiece series "24," (though it doesn't come anywhere close to Jack Bauer's world).
In short, the acting is pretty good (though nothing great), the action/special effects are just average, while the plot is rather poor.
Moreover, most characters are weak, bland and just plain uninteresting.
In a nutshell, it's probably not a movie you would want to add to your collection, but it will provide for an evening's entertainment, and that's about it.
No masterpiece here... 3.5 Stars

5 out of 5 stars another good Depp movie..........2007-04-23

my mother say's Johnny Depp is one of her favorite actors. we'll of the younger generation. he's a truly gifted actor and fully becomes each character he plays.
i like watching his movies as well. this one has Christopher Walken playing in it. it's set in real time. he's given a gun a photo and a short amount of time to kill someone. i'm not going to say who or what causes him to do it, just watch it and find out.
don't read any detailed reviews. if you've not seen it watch it for the first time and just see it. anything more descriptive will ruin the whole movie for you.
it is worth buying as well, but if you are into just renting you won't be disappointed. a good flick...
enjoy,
CMH

4 out of 5 stars Walken at his usual, creepy self........2007-01-31

This is a very suspenseful, intense movie that totally satisfies. There are no explosions or special effects. It's just a tightly wound, well-acted movie. Christopher Walken is at his usual, creepy self; and despite Johnny Depp not being one of my favorite actors or people, he still delivers. The plot is very interesting. A man's daughter is kidnapped and held hostage while he is blackmailed into killing a politician to keep his daughter alive. A nice film to occupy an hour and half of your time on a Saturday night.

2 out of 5 stars Nick of Time.......2007-01-01

This movie was only marginally enjoyable. Watching Johnny Depp run around as a clueless accountant was pretty boring, and while Christopher Walken is a great actor, his role was marginal and one-sided. Instead of playing a real villain, he is essentially a tool to move the plot along by appearing suddenly and creeping out our protagonist.
Shooting the movie in real time was a novel idea, but it doesn't make it a better movie. While the viewer does get the sense that Johnny Depp is wasting time, or that he could be spending it better, or just simply that the time is running out, what struck me more was the boredom that came over me after watching Johnny Depp wheel about mindlessly for the umpteenth time. If the blame for all of the faults of the movie had to go to one person, it is probably the screenwriter, since the story was unoriginal and, frankly, boring.
This movie did have redeeming qualities. To name a few, Johnny Depp's acting was certainly high-quality. The plot twist at the end, while predictable, did move the film along.
Unfortunately, the movie was not over in anything close to a nick of time.
In consequence, if you want to see this movie, I would suggest renting it, but I certainly wouldn't buy it. I couldn't stand to see it again.

Pay no attention to the fact that Timecop is an insult to intelligent science fiction, and that it gradually succumbs to an acute case of the sillies. It is a Jean-Claude Van Damme movie, after all, so check your brain at the door and enjoy this action flick set in the year 2004. Van Damme plays an officer in the Time Enforcement Police, assigned to prevent criminals from traveling to the past with the intent of altering the future. Ron Silver plays the evil politician who plots to retrieve a stockpile of gold from the Civil War to finance his latest campaign. The film is clever to a point, and entertaining if you can ignore the dumb jokes and inconsistencies. Best of all, it's an above-average vehicle for Van Damme (relatively speaking), who gets to kick some villainous butt and share a few scenes with Mia Sara, who plays the Timecop's wife. As Van Damme fans can tell you, this is one of the action star's better movies. --Jeff Shannon

3 out of 5 stars Fun with time travel.......2007-02-18

This is an interesting action/adventure/mystery film with time travel elements. It also has great cinematography. I really like the story. Some parts are a little gruesome, and I have to close my eyes.

2 out of 5 stars Gotta give the ppl what the ppl really want........2007-02-04

Well in the beginning of the early dvd stages movie studios were adepting anyways. I had this film on laserdisc and its orgnial oar was 2.35:1 so whats the problem universal. As many films in there library the shadow also was in widescreen in laserdisc also maybe in the future universal will start producing more titles in there widescreen products. Even more studios double dipping these days thats what i call a re-release of a film special editions blah blah better late then never right or trying to make the ppl spend more money when they double dip or dont wanna spend the extra time and quaily and money even bad movies get nice transfers look at the newly released gymkata geez. But universal its 2007 jump on the widescreen bandwagon from all the older release you've released from the beginning twins, timecop, the shadow, kindergaten cop,i'm putting faith in you now give the ppl what the ppl really want thanks for reading.

3 out of 5 stars Van Damme always gets his man.......2007-01-23

I loved this movie when it first came out, so when I saw it cheap I had to buy it, only to be a little disappointed. It certainly wasn't as good as I had remembered it being. It is very early nineties in every way. Van Damme's acting is just dreadful, but that comes as no surprise, no-one watches his movies for his acting abiliteis. All of his awesome martial arts moves are here, along with his corny one-liners. It is sad that his stunt double was obviously used quite regularly.
There are a couple of other good performances by Ron Silver as the bad guy, and Mia Sara as the love interest, who is so tiny, Van Damme could snap her in half. This one is for fans only, for anyone else it is merely just lost in time.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Much a Classic.......2006-07-09

For Future Films this is a good one. Pretty much a classic. Van Dame is as good as ever and the show is great on DVD. The story is great - trying to take over the Country through time manipulation. What more can you ask for ?

Clint Eastwood may be a little too old (plus he kind of already did his own version of this movie in 1993's In the Line of Fire), but Harrison Ford could have been The Sentinel's lead and lent the same kind of top-flight Hollywood superstar craft that Michael Douglas brings as a superstar secret service agent fighting a frame-up in a panicky countdown to peril. That the marquee name could have belonged to anyone with the same chops as Douglas is no slam to him, Ford, Eastwood, or anyone else of their ilk. The Sentinel is a crackling good thriller because everyone involved is working at the top of their game. Pete Garrison (Douglas) is on the presidential protection detail when another agent is murdered. A creepy informer tells Garrison about an elaborate assassination conspiracy that's related and well underway. Garrison also happens to be having an affair with the First Lady (Kim Basinger), the stress of which causes him to flunk a lie detector test when word of the plot to kill the president becomes more than just paranoia. Garrison is soon on the run, being hunted by his protege David Breckinridge (Kiefer Sutherland, whose 24 experience gives his performance an extra edge). But Garrison is the best, using all his secret service wiles (and there are plenty, the details of which give added tension and authenticity to the taut script) to evade his former comrades as the clock ticks. You can often see the plot thickening a mile away, and as much as the movie wants to keep us guessing, the real bad guy is an easy mark for the audience. But the energy and kinetic skill which propel the action are always spot on and enough to keep us from caring about the giveaways. Co-star Eva Longoria is miles away from her Desperate Housewives role and miles away from any real import of character in the movie. But the rest of the cast and the whooshing forward momentum of style and anxiety are plenty to keep The Sentinel in full-tilt suspense mode from beginning to end.--Ted Fry

Description

There's never been a traitor in the United States Secret Service...until now. And the evidence points to Pete Garrison (Douglas), one of the most trusted agents on the force. Now on the run, with two relentless federal investigators (Sutherland and Longoria) hot on his heels, Garrison must fight to clear his name and thwart an attempt on the President's life before it's too late!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-06-22

I watched this DVD twice in one week. It's fast moving and will really keep your attention.

3 out of 5 stars So-so.......2007-06-14

With all the talent involved -Michael Douglas, Kiefer Sutherland, Kim Basinger and Eva Longoria-- The Sentinel should have been a better movie. The idea is not a bad one: for the first time in history, there's a traitor inside the Secret Service, who's planning to kill the President of the United States. But screenplay has a lot of holes and flaws that not even this talented cast can overcome.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Suspense Story.......2007-05-29

I had a good time with this one. There were no real surprises, but everyone connected with the movie delivered great performances that allowed the story to progress at a rapid, suspenseful pace that never broke.

Michael Douglas stars as Pete Garrison, a seasoned Secret Service agent who took a bullet meant for Ronald Reagan. He's ageing comfortably well and spending his life in service to the office of the President as a personal protector to the First Lady. Unfortunately, Garrison has also fallen in love with Sarah Ballentine and he's been compromised for some time.

In short order, a plot to kill the president is discovered. All indications are that the plot is coming from within the Secret Service. They go on a mole hunt at the same time one of Garrison's confidential informers tells him about the mole. Someone also knows about Garrison's affair with the first lady.

After a few tense cat-and-mouse moments, Garrison is placed in the cross-hairs of the Secret Service investigation. His one-time best friend David Breckinridge (Keifer Sutherland) comes after him with a vengeance because he believes Garrison had an affair with his wife. Eva Longoria stars as new Secret Service recruit Jill Marin.

The movie evolves into a series of chases and mystery-solving that runs tight and neat to the end, although it doesn't really break any new ground. The movie is a great rental for movie night for both sexes that enjoy suspense stories with well-choreographed action sequences.

I watched the Blu-ray version. The audio and video formatting are excellent and are both uncompressed, giving the viewer the best experience possible if they have an HD monitor and surround sound system.

4 out of 5 stars Secret Service agent framed.......2007-05-14

Michael Douglas plays a long-time Secret Service agent who took a bullet in place of Ronald Reagan during his [...] attempt. Word has it that there is a plot to kill the current President and Douglas is supposed to be the man working on the inside to see that the [...] is successful. Investigators don't have to look far to uncover a motive, as Douglas has been carrying on an affair with the First Lady. Douglas has a tough job in eluding the investigators who are after him and trying to find the real Secret Service mole. This is a slick, fast-paced movie with plenty of star power in Douglas and Eva Longoria. It will provide you a good evening's entertainment.

2 out of 5 stars As much as I like Clark Johnson, I can't get behind this one........2007-05-12

The Sentinel (Clark Johnson, 2006)

Back before this movie came out, I was a little confused-- it got very little marketing for a movie with a cast as respectable as this one has. Well, now I've seen it, and I think I know why-- I'm guessing Fox, once it saw the finished product, was a bit reluctant to release it. That, or embarrassed. Clark Johnson (probably best remembered for his acting-- he played Meldrick Lewis on the wonderful Homicide: Life on the Street) is very good at directing for the small screen-- he's done some great work on The Shield, including the pilot episode-- but as his big-screen adventures have shown, it's not translating well.

The plot, for those of you who missed it in the trailers: Pete Garrison (Michael Douglas), a decorated Secret Service member, is accused of being a mole. His former best friend, David Breckinridge (Kiefer Sutherland), is pursuing the case with, shall we say, a good deal of overeagerness thanks to a fallout between the two some years before. Meanwhile, the real mole is planning something dastardly having to do with the President (United 93's David Rasche).

Much of the movie's lackluster pace and overall silliness can be pinned on scriptwriter George Nolfi (whose previous claim to fame was Ocean's Twelve; need I say more?), but its disheveled appearance is all on Johnson. You'd think someone who can make The Shield almost palpably slimy would be able to work with this stuff. And I've never quite figured out why it's so tough for successful TV directors to make the switch to the big screen, but The Sentinel provides more evidence for the hypothesis that it's so. **

Description

Anne Rice's The Feast of All Saints is a tale set in 1840's New Orleans about "free people of color", who formed their own class at a time when the predominant role of blacks in society was as slaves. The film focuses on the ordeal of one young man named Marcel Ste. Marie (Ri'chard), who searches for the truth about his heritage. As he finds his individual path into the future, Marcel is fully aware that he is a child of African and European descent, but his story is uniquely American.

5 out of 5 stars SO HAPPY...........2007-04-13

THAT I PURCHASED THIS MOVIE! SOMEONE @ WORK TOLD ME ABOUT IT & I DECIDED TO BUY IT & IM GLAD I DID! IT ARRIVED IN GREAT SHAPE! THANXS AMAZON:)

2 out of 5 stars What A Silly Movie!.......2007-02-25

Why the production team of this movie didn't film in New Orleans is beyond my comprehension. When I first saw this movie, I could see based on the footage that it was filmed in Canada. The terrain is totally different from south Louisiana. It looked like a movie set. I guess the set designers thought they could put a few stands of fake Spanish moss on the trees and a hunk of it in the fountains and a banana tree in that corner and a palm in the other. It looked like a theme park! The streets looked too clean. For some reason they could not depict the elegance of decay of old New Orleans which to me is paramount in the telling of these people's lives but maybe I am being too technical. All the principle characters all had straight teeth and clear skin. Back in the 1840's just about everybody had some sort of illness then and they looked it. The actor who played Marcel could not act. The actor who played his white father did not age at all for 18 years. Still looked the same, yet he had very young children by his white wife who he married 18 years before. The architecture of the plantation house was also wrong. It was'nt even French
No live oaks anywhere which are major icons in southern Louisiana. The supporting actors and actresses were quite good.Let me just say this, white men maintaining women of color was not only prevelent in New Orleans but also other states in the south, the difference is is that in New Orleans, the white master would leave them property and money. Not so in other southern states. The more beautiful the woman, the more she would receive from the white man.The placage system in New Orleans was a business arrangement and it worked for both parties.

2 out of 5 stars Feast of a Violent and Disturbing Saints.......2007-01-17

I have seen "Feast of All Saints" twice and every time it has been harder to watch. I would not recommend this film especially if you cannot stomach violence and graphic images. Overall, it attempts to provide a history lesson, but if you are seeking knowledge of the quadroons & mulatto people of that era pick up a history book with historical facts.

5 out of 5 stars Feast of All Saints.......2007-01-10

The first time I saw this movie was at a friends home. Had to find it because it was that great. History is explained so well. l looked in stores, but it was not available. I went to Amazon and to my surprise located it. Love the movie, the price, and the fast shipment. Would highly recommend this film to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Rainy Day Saga.......2007-01-06

If you have not viewed this DVD and you are a "drama" hound, you're going to love it! The acting was flawless and the cast was outstanding. Since viewing this DVD, I have recommended it relentlessly to all my friends.

4 out of 5 stars A sequel that stands on it's own..........2007-03-11

Not really a sequel, but another richly filmed erotic story that you won't forget.

2 out of 5 stars Strangely Edited.......2007-01-20

I picked this up mostly because I'm a fan of Nina Siemaszko. I'd seen this film years ago on cable, and I assumed I'd seen the R-rated version. Apparently not, as this DVD is most definitely missing at least one major scene that I remember, and probably has other serious cuts as well.

Reviews here talk about a missing "full frontal" scene of Blue (Siemaszko). The scene I remembered was actually a little shy of "full" in that the character crossed her hands in front of herself when fully disrobed... a small, modest gesture that made perfect sense for the character. Surely, I thought, if there was more to the scene than that, I wouldn't miss it, so I ordered the DVD.

But when the reviews here say the scene is missing, they mean the WHOLE SCENE... and it actually is a scene that plays an important part in setting up the characters of Blue and Elle (Wendy Hughes). If you've seen the unrated version, you're no doubt familiar with it. Blue is standing before Elle, and Elle tells Blue to take off her clothes. Blue ignores the request while Elle goes through a short monologue about "her girls." Finally Elle tires of Blue's disobedience and decides that Blue has changed her mind, and summons another woman to see her out. Blue says she hasn't changed her mind. A few more lines of dialog from Elle, and SNIP! The censor's scissors cut out the scene where Blue allows herself to be undressed by the other woman.

The missing scene, while somewhat erotic, also establishes Elle's power and manipulation. The message is clear: Elle gets what she wants. Nobody says no to Elle.

There are some other scenes that do have full frontal nudity intact, such as when Elle is looking for a body double for Blue later in the film and three women stand before her, fully disrobed. The scene that was cut was less explicit in content, but more important to the film.

Okay, so it's not Citizen Kane. Still, it's annoying to see arbitrary chops like this in a film. Please, people, if you're going to bother transferring a movie to DVD, have the sense to leave it intact.

1 out of 5 stars Lame.......2007-01-11

Saw this when it came out years ago; this DVD is an 'R' rated copy of an NC-17 movie... at at least three different points, this version deletes some very erotic material from the original. Now, this could be on regular broadcast TV. Save your money, especially if you're thinking of buying it because you think you KNOW what's supposed to be there. It ain't.

1 out of 5 stars Wild Orchid 2.......2006-08-15

Very miss leading title, has nothing to do with Wild Orchid, which was a fantastic movie. I found it disappointing.

4 out of 5 stars Worth seeing on DVD.......2005-12-06

I love the erotic feel of the lighting , colors, and especially the music. (How about a soundtrack release?). One full frontal nudity scene of Blue is cut from this DVD, it's on the unrated VHS.

1 out of 5 stars For Those Who Like Intellectual Jibberish .......2007-02-03

If you liked high school poetry class, you might like this movie. Both my wife and I hated it because the teachers always seemed to find some meaning in a poem that completely mystified us. I thought this movie was going to be a search for the missing sixteen-year-old sister of the main character. If she found out what happened, it must have been hidden just like those esoteric 'meanings' our teachers found in the poems they assigned. I thought the movie was still setting the background when it suddenly ended. What it was all about, I have no idea.

This is a movie for those who like to spout intellectual jibberish and think it means something. Or, maybe you have to be on some kind of illegal drug to make any sense of this movie?

2 out of 5 stars Unhappy here and happy that it is over.......2006-12-21

First I must say that this film COULD have been good. You can rarely rely on the liner notes on a box these days. This one is billed as a "high tech thriller" with remarkable performances. The film boasts nothing high tech and mediocre performances. The best performances occur when the film flits to a black and white computer screen, which it does often, and the actors are playing some type of virtual reality game. The acting on the computer screen is the best part of the film. There is this surreal sense almost deamlike at times and because there is no dialog in these sequences these black and white dreamy asides work.
The acting is confusing, two separate characters have limps with no apparent reason. A third character has a patch over her eye from some type of surgery and the writer director Michael Atmereyda never goes deeply enough into any one character where we can get some understanding of what makes his characters tick. He could greatly benefit from a good screen writing class where he should learn the basics of what makes for a good script. Some storyboards might have been shown around and he could have asked ior a little help before he made this film.
There was potential and some very good ideas they just never developed. Think of it as a sort of "CRASH" type movie where everyone is somehow linked only in this script we never know how they are linked. There are way too many assumptions that the audience "gets it", when in fact, there's just not much to get. There are a few clever spots a Vandergraft generator that burns up and causes a fire that relates to an earlier fire sequence, a nightclub scene with a character that vaguely looks like Little Richard. I suppose there are enough odd elements to make this a tiny notch above a yawn. I would like to see more from this director as there are some genuine interesting ideas that dribble through this film. I would hope that this was a learning experience and that we get a better total package with his next effort. SG

1 out of 5 stars THIS WON'T MAKE YOU HAPPY.......2006-05-22

There are bad movies, and there are badder movies. And then there are simply TERRIBLE movies. This is one of them, an indie that can only serve to prove that MOST (not all, now) indies are movies made by intellectuals who think they have something important or 'artsy' to say, but manage to say nothing. This abominable film is one of the worst movies I've ever suffered through. A plot that makes no sense whatsoever with performances that are stifling and unbelievable, and no semblance of coherency at all. David Arquette should start being a stay at home husband for Courteney, and Ally Sheedy needs to retire. As for Clarence Williams III, he should stay in retirement and watch THE MOD SQUAD or something more productive. Nothing saves this awful mess.

3 out of 5 stars LUKE WARM.......2004-01-23

COLD BLOODED is a complex, sometimes confusing, and ultimately frustrating mystery film. Director Randy Bradshaw directs in a slow-moving, static manner, and the script is bogged down with so much conspiracy going on, it's hard to focus on exactly who the heroes and villains are.
Michael Moriarty is at his soporific worst in his portrayal of the assistant to the attorney general, acting like he'd much rather be at home doing crossword puzzles.
Gloria Reuben has little energy in her role as a possible serial killer's lawyer.
Patti LuPone needs to stick with musicals; her Barbra Streisand impersonation is fruitless.
Kenneth Welsh does a nasty turn as Officer Brodski, who's using a snitch that is possibly a serial killer.
The best acting in the cast comes from supporting actors who play the serial killer potential and the cop assisting Brodski. Unfortunately, I can't recall their names and they're conspiculously missing from the box.
Plodding and slow, the movie would bear renting more than buying.
