Amazon.com essential video
David O. Selznick wanted <I>Gone with the Wind</I> to be somehow more than a movie, a film that would broaden the very idea of what a film could be and do and look like. In many respects he got what he worked so hard to achieve in this 1939 epic (and all-time box-office champ in terms of tickets sold), and in some respects he fell far short of the goal. While the first half of this Civil War drama is taut and suspenseful and nostalgic, the second is ramshackle and arbitrary. But there's no question that the film is an enormous achievement in terms of its every resource--art direction, color, sound, cinematography--being pushed to new limits for the greater glory of telling an American story as fully as possible. Vivien Leigh is still magnificently narcissistic, Olivia de Havilland angelic and lovely, Leslie Howard reckless and aristocratic. As for Clark Gable: we're talking one of the most vital, masculine performances ever committed to film. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>
Customer Reviews:
Gone With the Wind.......2007-06-20
One of the world's most cherished and enduring pictures, "Wind" was birthed in the mind of novelist Margaret Mitchell and incubated by the brilliant, obsessive David O. Selznick, who spared no expense in bringing this powerful, affecting story to the big screen. The ultra-lavish production features ornate costumes and art design, jaw-dropping set pieces and historical sequences (especially the burning of Atlanta, for which a Hollywood set was torched), all wrapped around the story of a resourceful, if not likable, heroine. Leigh plays the self-absorbed Scarlett to perfection, while Gable's Rhett is devilishly suave and fiercely masculine. Grand studio filmmaking at its aristocratic best, Selznick's brainchild nabbed an armload of Oscars, including Best Picture.
Four-Disc Collector's Edition Gives New Luster to Selznick's masterpiece..........2007-06-08
Just as Margaret Mitchell's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel was one of the most readable works ever written, so is David O. Selznick's production one of the most watchable films of all time. Something is happening every moment--and all of the characters relate to each other in fascinating ways only apparent after repeated viewings. It's the kind of movie that transports you to a time and place that may not have existed except in the mind of its Southern author--and yet, whatever historical inaccuracies are presented here--it's a remarkable achievement and has rightly become a part of American folklore and culture.
No other film has so many memorable "quotes" from a large cast of characters--and at the centerpiece is Vivien Leigh's striking performance as the willful Southern belle. Others around her are equally impressive, down to the smallest character roles--everyone has their moment of glory with the only weakness being the casting of Leslie Howard as Ashley Wilkes. Otherwise, the casting is perfect--Clark Gable, Olivia de Havilland, Thomas Mitchell, Barbara O'Neil, Evelyn Keyes, Harry Davenport, Jane Darwell, Victor Jory, Ann Rutherford, Rand Brooks, Ona Munson--and the wonderful Hattie McDaniel giving the most genuine display of emotion in the whole film with her "staircase scene" with Melanie when she tells Scarlett's friend what Rhett has said and done after Bonnie's death.
All of the sets, costumes, art direction and photography are of the highest order. William Cameron Menzie's production design is superb (he storyboarded the whole concept of what the scenes should look like with beautiful watercolor paintings). The one film above all others that shows what Hollywood's expertise could do with a gigantic novel when transferring it to the screen.
Much of the dialog is witty and pointed with some of the best lines delivered in mocking style by Clark Gable. An abundant amount of humor and sharp observations about human nature are present in the script. No wonder it's still the most beloved American movie of all time--not just here in the U.S. but elsewhere in the international market. It was an instant classic and still remains one, richly deserving all eight of the Oscars it won, as well as the Irving G. Thalberg Award for David O. Selznick.
Selznick would have been proud of what the Ultra-Resolution process has been able to achieve in the new 4-Disc version. Image clarity has never been as fully realized before and makes the viewing an even richer movie-going experience for today's viewers. Highly recommended.
"The Making of a Legend" is included, one of the best documentaries ever filmed about a feature film that was an instant classic with critics and public, and the "Melanie Remembers" feature gives Olivia de Havilland the chance to recall why making the film remains one of her favorite memories.
THE GREATEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME!!!.......2007-06-03
This is the Greatest Movie of all time because all aspects of the movie were carefully and painstakingly crafted with such precision and agility. The story is a classic and the cinematography is superb. The lighting is dream-like and the delivery of acting compliments the era that was showcased. There will never be a production such as this. Clark Gable is at his prime as the dashing Leading Man. Vivian Leigh steals all scenes and it is no wonder that she won the Academy Award for this picture. George Reeves plays one of the twins in the very early part of the movie. He is Super! This movie was well- directed and produced. It has endured the test of time. Frankly, my Dear ...You will give a Damn about this Classic. Pick it up today!

This four-disc set, part of Warner's Essential Classics series, collects three truly classic films--<I>Gone with the Wind</I>, <I>Casablanca</I>, and <I>Doctor Zhivago</I>--in one inexpensive package. The drawback is you don't get the bonus second discs of the movies--or, in the case of the deluxe version of <I>Gone with the Wind</I>, the third and fourth discs (the movie of <I>Zhivago</I> is still on a two-sided "flipper" disc)--so if you're a documentary junky or if you simply have to see the <I>Casablanca</I> TV show, you'll want to stick with the individual releases. But this set does include the commentary tracks and any other material that was on the movie discs of those sets, and best of all, they have the great remastered pictures of the previous releases. So if you just want the movies looking better than ever with some bonus features thrown in for good measure, the price per movie makes this set an attractive bargain. <I>--David Horiuchi</I>

Essential Classics.......2007-03-10
These are three of my favorite movies with some of the best performances I have seen.
Clark Gable was great in "Gone with the Wind", but Vivien Leigh was magnificent and made me a lifelong fan with this movie.
Humphrey Bogart and the beautiful Ingrid Bergman, who could ask for more? In "Casablanca" you also get a great script and "As Time Goes By."
"Doctor Zhivago" gave me my first look into the Russia of the early 20th century. It is also a passionate love story.

America's Sweetheart.......2007-01-20
America's sweetheart, Shirley Temple, delights and entertains us with three more movies in her Sweetheart collection. Availiable in both color and black and white, the only thing missing is widescreen presentation.
Not Only The Greatest Child Actress. But The Greatest Actress Ever........2006-12-29
I just finished watching this volume 3 collection and want to wholeheartedly endorse it.
I had read some reviews that the picture quality and sound was not so good and was doubtful if I should buy it, but bought it all the same as I had enjoyed the other two volumes so much.
Well I was not disappointed at all. The sound quality was very good. Try listning to it on the stereo option on the on-screen menu.
These are three of her very best films and you will laugh and enjoy them so much.
My wife never ever heard of Shirley Temple till 2006 when I introduced her to Shirley's films and now we both are big fans and look forward to these re-releases.
'The Little Colonel' and 'The littlest Rebel' both have the excellent Bill 'Bojangles' Robinson acting and dancing in fine form with Shirley.
Bill worked out the dance routines in all these three pictures but only stars in the above mentioned two.
No one grabs my attention like Shirley. It's a whole combination of things like her smile and laughter, her dancing and mannerisms and she cry's so realistic that you would think she is really upset (but no it's just our Shirley doing her stuff, excellent as useual).
Shirlet Temple is a gale of fresh air in a very stale and cynical world and her films will restore hope and confidence to you in the human race.
Why not check out her official web site and send her an e-mail. She's still going strong.
Movie jumped all over the place.......2006-12-20
I am returning the Vol. I movie, Heidi, movie was terrible; movie jumped all over the place throughout the entire movie. I am returning for another one that hopefully works. These should be checked out before they are sent. I had wanted it for a XMas gift for my daughter; good thing I looked at it first. I am very disappointed. I hope the next one works.
Sound quality not what it should be.......2006-06-08
I own all 3 of these Shirley Temple sets that have been released so far. The sound quality seems to be going downhill...
All 3 of the DVDs in Volume One were okay. I was very pleased with that set. In Volume Two, I noticed that the sound quality in Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm was not that great (quiet voices and comparatively loud music). In this last volume, the sound was questionable in The Littlest Rebel... but it was atrocious in Dimples. It sounded as if all the actors were talking into pillows. I have watched these films on VHS and the sound is fine... perhaps something went wrong when they were put onto DVD.
I will say, however, that I absolutely love The Littlest Rebel and The Little Colonel. They're probably my favourite Shirley Temple movies, so to find them both in Volume Three was great. I was worried about The Little Colonel, though. The last scene was originally shot in Technicolor; however, in Fox's last VHS release of the movie (colourized), they cut the scene! I was so glad to see that the lovely "pink party" scene was included in this version... it's wonderful to see such an early example of colour in the movies.
As with the other two sets, the colourization of the black and white films is good (much better than previous attempts). However, the sound quality really annoyed me. Had I known it would be so bad, I would have just skipped Dimples and purchased the other two DVDs separately.

A three-hour weepy extraordinaire, this 1944 offering from producer David O. Selznick (who also wrote the screenplay) was a tribute to all the families who stayed behind while their men went off to fight in World War II. Claudette Colbert is the mother of daughters Jennifer Jones and Shirley Temple; first seen coming home after dropping her war-bound husband at the train, she becomes the model of courage and strength on the homefront. The plot has a Saturday Evening Post feel today, as it follows the family's day-to-day life and struggles, whether with a crotchety boarder (a delightfully starchy Monty Woolley) or oldest daughter Jones's doomed romance with departing serviceman Robert Walker. They don't make them like this anymore and it's too bad. Nominated for a fistful of Oscars, it took only one, for its shadow-drenched black-and-white cinematography. --Marshall Fine
Description
Nominated* for nine Academy AwardsÂ(r), this heart-warming, soul-stirring (Variety) portrait of life on the homefront during World War II is a magnificent picture rich in humor and poignant with heartbreak (The Hollywood Reporter). Claudette Colbert heads an all-star cast, including Jennifer Jones, Joseph Cotten and Shirley Temple, in this beautifully produced picture that gets into your heart (Los Angeles Examiner). With her husband Tim off at war, Anne Hilton (Colbert) struggles to be a pillar of strength for her daughters Jane (Jones) and Bridget (Temple). During America's darkest hours, she bravely steers her girls through heartbreak and hardships as she eagerly awaits news from overseas and wonders if life will ever be the same. *1944: Best Picture, Actress (Colbert), Supporting Actor (Monty Woolley), Supporting Actress (Jones), Cinematography (B&W), Art Direction (B&W), Editing, Music Score (won), Special Effects

this might have been the greatest generation, but it certainly wasnt because of this tripe.......2007-04-25
an attempt at an american "mrs miniver", and 60+ years later it falls just as flat. the usually vibrant claudette colbert gives one of her stiffest performances, with insufficient support from a list of otherwise usually reliable castmates, e.g. joseph cotten, jennifer jones, hattie mcdaniel, &c. the one solid performance is from agnes moorehead as the town biddy, and theres a major curiosity performance by a teenaged shirley temple, long past her age of appeal. perhaps this bucked up people on the homefront during ww2, but it does little to inform &/or entertain today.
Waste of time and money!.......2007-03-13
Don't purchase this one. It's a pointless, plotless waste of time and money. It goes absolutely nowhere for 3 hours. From the write-up, we thought it was going to be a good movie. Wrong! It turned out to be a total waste of our family's time. We threw the DVD in the trash.
A MOVIE STILL TRUE TODAY.......2007-03-09
PURCHASED THIS MOVIE FOR MY WIFE THAT SHE HAS SEEN SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE YEARS, BEGINNING WITH THE OLD "MILLION DOLLAR MOVIE". HAVE SEEN QUITE A BIT OF THIS BUT NEVER SAT TO WATCH IT IN ONE SITTING. IT'S REALLY MY WIFE THAT REQUESTED IT. CONSIDERING THE WAR OF TODAY, WITH THIS TAKING PLACE ON THE HOMEFRONT IN WWII, THE IMPACT ON THE FAMILIES OF THOSE SERVING STILL HOLDS TRUE TODAY.
Since you went away.......2007-02-20
I am a Shirley Temple collector, movie was great. They do not make good movies anymore like they use to. She is my favorite actresses. I was impressed to have it on DVD. Excellent movie.
A sentimental, loving, inspiring, and charmimng film of 1944........2006-07-04
"Since You Went Away" was a film that revealed the other side of war. It showed the emotions of the families who had to struggle with, or without a family member going off to fight, and how people coped with the daily life. The most touching scene of the movie, was when the train slowly chugged down the dark tunnel, into complete blackness, knowing that her husband is never returning. I can't really say that this movie will bring you to high spirits (Especially if you're very emmotional), yet it does tell an incredible story. Everybody in "Since You Went Away" is extremely talented, with much skill, although Shirley Temple wasn't as convincing in her role as her other co-stars, and leading actors. This movie is NOT cosidered an old fashioned "Chick Flick." It is a family film for everyone to enjoy. Although the producer of "Since You Went Away" wanted this movie to be just as great as "Gone With The Wind," it (unfortunately) didn't quite make the cut, yet it was a definite success of its time, and still continues to be a family favorite. I would HIGHLY recommend you see this film: rent it, or surely buy it. I hope this review has helped.

Bert Glennon, who shot <I>Stagecoach</I> and seven other John Ford classics, has given this Raoul Walsh biopic of George Armstrong Custer a burnished glow--an evocative interplay of raw sunlight and elegiac shadow like no other vintage Warner Bros. Western. Glennon's artistry and Walsh's trademark gusto sustain enthusiasm even as the screenplay beggars belief. The flamboyant Custer (Errol Flynn), rushed into Civil War service straight from West Point, did get promoted overnight to general and establish a spectacular record for "ride to the guns" leadership. However, Custer as defender of Indians' rights--to the point of willing his own Last Stand so he could accuse corrupt Indian Commissioners from the grave--is historical rewrite of such sweeping chutzpah as to shame DeMille. Flynn and Olivia de Havilland make an even more appealing couple than usual, and the big supporting cast is unflaggingly energetic above and beyond the call of duty. <I>--Richard T. Jameson</I>
Customer Reviews:
Onions & Tea Leaves?.......2007-06-14
I love our country and the excellent military establishments that has come along way to being more disciplined than back in Custers' days of skull-dabbery and malicious exploits!
"You can take glory with you"! Sounds like a very accurate portrayal of another false one that will cause confusion and trickery like this, Son of the Morning character seen in Gen. George A. Custer.
Good intentions are the surest road to hell and a lot of people were blinded by his deception.
Ignore the Historical Flaws: Solid Drama.......2007-04-20
When filmmakers decide to take actual events to place them on the screen, they face the difficult decision of to what extant they will tinker with the truth to score some dramatic points. In the case of THEY DIED WITH THEIR BOOTS ON, the producers totally abandoned any semblance of truth to present a vision of the life and death of General George Armstrong Custer that was then fully resonant with the burgeoning militarism of 1941 Hollywood. I know that it is difficult for current moviegoers to possibly envision an artistic elite that supports and glorifies traditional American values, but back in pre-Pearl Harbor days, political correctness meant flag waving, not flag burning. What Hollywood wanted was a flashy dashing hero who could be both charming and heroic at the same time. In Errol Flynn, America could see a distorted version of the egotistical and megalomaniacal glory hunter that Custer truly was, but Flynn's interpretation played down that part of him and emphasized an altruistic side that is so breathtaking in its centrality to Custer's film persona, that movie audiences could see in Flynn-Custer a hearkening back to the frontier hero that America was to need to buttress itself for the looming war. Director Raoul Walsh essentially films a vastly entertaining war cartoon that allows Flynn to pair with Olivia DeHavilland to maintain a love interest that forms the background for the many action scenes. And what action scenes there are. Flynn is seen attacking Confederate positions in cavalry charges with more than a little tongue in cheek. But in the second half, the mood and tempo change when Flynn takes his militancy out west to fight Indians. The smiling Flynn of the Civil War becomes the serious Flynn of the Far West. As Custer, Flynn is prepared to sacrifice his entire 7th Cavalry to save the greater body of troops of his commander, General Terry. The climactic massacre at the Battle of the Little Big Horn shows a more megalomaniacal side to Custer than what Director Walsh probably intended. In the hours preceeding the battle, Flynn's facial expression and voice well indicate a man who is stoically resigned to die merely for a higher cause. When the film's villain, played by Arthur Kennedy, asks him why he is doing this, Custer replies: "For glory or to hell. It depends on your perspective." My perspective was that Custer chose both at the same time. It is this odd pairing of wildly divergent viewpoints that make this gross distortion of history an entertaining film--even if I had to wonder whether Custer cared a hoot about the 198 troopers under his command.
A romantic pastiche that stands the test of time.......2007-02-25
If one is looking for an accurate history of Custers life this is not the movie for you. However it it a wonderful film that totally stands the test of time. When ever I see it it makes me laugh one minute, and move me to tears the next. It is very powerful. Raoul Walsh as director is excellent.
It is a movie full of action, comedy, drama, pathos and romance, only in the way the golden age of Hollywood could have portrade it.
Especially is the unforgettable last scene of De Havilland and Flynn. It was the last time they would ever work together. These two people though never personally involved truly adored each other. The electricity of their performance is proof to that, and one of the most heart rendering scenes ever made on film.
Buy it, Just seeing Errol Flynn and Olivia De Havilland together is worth the price of the DVD
The Legend of Custer and the 7th Cavalry lives on.......2007-02-21
I Know many people remark about the historical inaccuracies of this film, but if it is a history lesson you seek-go to school. This is a movie and an excellent one at that. True, many of the characters represent real people, but as I said it is a movie. It has good writing and a well acted plot. Most of all, it has Errol Flynn and Olivia DeHaviland in their last appearnce together. As was typical of Flynn's movies, you can expect humor, romance, and a whole lot of action. Look for Anthony Quinn as Geronimo. Enjoy this for what it is, an Errol Flynn movie, not a history lesson
A Gourmet Popcorn Movie.......2006-10-15
"They Died With Their Boots On" is a classic gourmet "popcorn movie" that film students should study, so as to understand that movies made solely for entertainment purposes (even if the historical facts are fudged quite a bit) don't need to be dumbed down for the masses to enjoy; that they can be brilliantly made; and if they are approached in an artistically creative way, will be appreciated and enjoyed for years to come (Spielberg KNOWS this!).

Hollywood's ability to conjure up a bittersweet small town (on the studio back lot, to be sure) has rarely been on better display than in <I>Alice Adams</I>, a gentle adaptation of a Booth Tarkington novel. For that matter, Katharine Hepburn rarely had a better chance to radiate her early youthful glow. She plays the title character, a lonely misfit who tries--too hard--to fit in with the snooty debutantes in her class-conscious town. Fred MacMurray is the suitor who miraculously feels comfortable in the front-porch swing of the faded Adams home. In the exquisitely timed comedy of MacMurray's miserable dinner with Alice's family, director George Stevens displays the tools he learned directing Laurel and Hardy two-reelers, and the sequence becomes a funny-painful classic of social embarrassment. Hepburn's performance, whether Alice is chattering pretentiously or briefly lowering her guard and revealing her loneliness, is simply incandescent. <I>--Robert Horton</I>
Customer Reviews:
Classic Hepburn.......2007-06-10
If you like old black and white movies, you will enjoy watching some of the greatest actors in this classic drama.
Painful to Watch, for Various Reasons.......2007-05-26
Hepburn at her youngest and most beautiful, but a film flawed by cliché, casting, and motive. The movie comes from a Tarkington book that had inexplicably won a Pulitzer prize and is a lame expose of small town class systems and social climbing - Tarkington's book became a screenplay with none of the bite or insight of Sinclair Lewis' work. As to the casting, everyone except Hepburn delivers a 2 dimensional 30's-ish performance except the father who falls perilously close to muggery and caricature. He is a cross between the cowardly lion and a Little Rascal's parent.
Hepburn herself plays a young woman who is increasingly hypocritical and a liar in pursuit of a young man. The dinner sequence, justly remembered in Hollywood, shows her as luminous, bright, and brittle. However, it's all like watching Jerry Lewis play the idiot doomed to fail - very, very painful. The final redemption, after Hepburn becomes an honest woman, is less than believable. We had no character development of the Fred MacMurray character, so when he does the right thing, its because it's a Hollywood ending.
Leonard Maltin rated this 3 ½ in his guide - shame on you Leonard!
Simply Darling!.......2007-04-07
A delightful movie from 1935 starring the late great Katherine Hepburn and Fred MacMurray. Katherine Hepburn plays a middle class girl trying to fit into an upper class society. Of course, she falls in love with a rich man who's totally smitten with her from the moment he sees her across a crowded room. Throughout the movie Alice tries to hide her embarrassment of her family's inappropriate etiquette and lack of funds. Fred MacMurray was just darling and full of charm and smiles as the smitten rich boy looking for true love. Hepburn and MacMurray provided excellent chemistry for this black and white film that still oozes with romantic feelings. I look forward to watching it again. Reviewed by M. E. Wood
Sweet and full of feeling.......2006-12-23
The success of Alice Adams hinges largely on Katharine Hepburn's performance, and she does a fine job bringing life and spirit to the part. Alice admires the beautiful and rich daughters of the wealthier families in her town; she longs for their life of privilege, fashionable clothes, and charming suitors. Her own family lives in a modest house; her father isn't a driven and ambitious type, and her brother doesn't behave respectably. Alice attends a social ball wearing an old dress, and puts on a brave face as hardly anyone looks her way. Then, miraculously, a wealthy and affable young man, Arthur Russell (Fred MacMurray), asks her to dance.
From that point, Alice tries to fool Arthur into thinking that her family is well-off. When he visits, she meets him out on the porch. She talks about all the language, dance, and music lessons she was supposedly gifted with as a child, and makes excuses for why her family's home doesn't look all that splendid. And among these rambling made-up stories are the real kernels of truth about Alice's character - her loneliness and naivete, her bold dreams and self-consciousness. While it's true that she's adopted some of the same values as the more genteel families, she's sympathetic in how she stands up for her family in the moments when it truly counts, and how she's kind and soothing to her parents as well, particularly her loving but often unassertive father (played wonderfully by Fred Stone).
Fred MacMurray, as Arthur, isn't given a role with great depth, but he brings to it what he can. His job is to be a dream, an ideal, and he plays Arthur with a certain inscrutability, so when the end of the movie comes, and Alice seems resigned to a life filled with more responsibility and less romance, his continued presence on her porch didn't strike me as particularly unrealistic (no more so than similar events in other romance movies).
As for Hepburn, she made me feel for her character, so that even while Alice was being foolishly pretentious, I felt kindly towards her (and at times embarrassed for her). I was moved towards the end, when - with her grand romance seemingly ended - she pushes aside her pain and stands up for her father. Hepburn renders a character who is naive, full of love and fancy, and refreshingly different in key ways from the more fashionable young ladies in town.
kate is great & so is most of the rest of the movie.......2006-12-05
one of katharine hepburns signature performances, and deserevedly so, she stars in this adaptation of a booth tarkington novel about a young working class woman trying to push her way into "high society" (or what passes for that in provincial indiana). the movie sadly has to sidestep on the social satire (if it had been made 2 years earlier, i bet the ending would have been truer to life), but it still manages quite a few stings. and the set piece of the adams family formal dinner is a briiliantly directed stevens tour-de-force, highlighted by a hilarious turn (oh! that not-quite-starched cap, lol) from the sadly under-utilized hattie mcdaniel. still it is hepburns film, and her range of emotions here clearly go beyond "A to B".

Shirley Temple is at her plucky peak in this film. She bests legend Lionel Barrymore: literally (her credit is above his) and figuratively (as her character softens his). <I>The Little Colonel</I> is set in the post-Civil War South. Little Lloyd Sherman hopes to reunite her mother, Elizabeth Lloyd (Evelyn Venable), with her stern Confederate Civil War veteran grandfather, Colonel Lloyd (Barrymore). Six years earlier, Lloyd's mother had run away to marry Yankee Jack Sherman (John Lodge). Now the young family hopes to return to Elizabeth's plantation home.
Like <I>The Littlest Rebel</I>, made the same year (1935), the film has questionable politics, featuring a supplicant Mom Becky (the formidable future Oscar-winner Hattie McDaniel) and a poor-spelling butler, Walker (Bill "BoJangles" Robinson). But Temple, as sweetly energetic little Lloyd, is affectionate with both, as well as with her African American playmates, May Lily (Avonnie Jackson) and Henry Clay (Nyanza Potts). (Temple apparently shared the sentiment in real life, and once said Robinson was her favorite costar.) <I>The Little Colonel</I> features the amazing dance number with Temple and Robinson merrily tapping up and down a staircase. <I>--N.F. Mendoza</I>
Description
As the rambunctious "Little Colonel," Shirley Temple demonstrates her acting range as well as her lovable charm and song-and-dance showmanship in this affecting post-Civil War story. After a blistery Southern colonel (Lionel Barrymore) banishes his daughter (Evelyn Venable) for marrying a Northerner (John Lodge), he refuses to see her even when she returns years later with her young daughter. As outspoken as her grandfather, the ingenious child turns on plenty of charm and fireworks to set things right.

Shirley as a pint-sized Southern belle.......2007-05-12
THE LITTLE COLONEL was the first of two movies, released in 1935, that featured Shirley Temple in a Civil War storyline.
Based on a story by Annie Fellows Johnston, Shirley Temple plays the strong-willed Miss Lloyd Sherman, trying to reconcile her mother (Evelyn Venable) with her embittered grandfather (Lionel Barrymore). Temple is especially appealing in this film, where she gets to wear some beautiful hoopskirt costumes.
It's also in this film where Temple performs the legendary "Staircase Dance" with Bill 'Bojangles' Robinson, who would go on to appear in several more films with Temple based solely on his success here. This is one of the rare films where Shirley Temple doesn't sing; the only musical moment is provided with "Love's Young Dream", sung by a dubbed Evelyn Venable.
One of the all-time Temple greats, THE LITTLE COLONEL also features good work from Hattie McDaniel, John Lodge and Sidney Blackmer. The DVD inclues both B&W and computer-coloured versions of the film.
TOP NOTCH SHIRLEY TEMPLE AT HER BEST!.......2007-03-26
This is a classic Temple film! The Tap Dance on the stairs sequence is now legendary and it is amazing to see this talented kid keep up with Bill" Bo Jangles" Robinson. One of my favorits Shirley Temple movies for sure! There are only a hand full of her films that I will always remember and this is one of them. Heidi,Bright Eyes and Curly Top were the others. The DVD has both Black and White and Colorized version. I am not a fan of colorizing anything, but since they kept the original intact, I did enjoy watching both.
Another Shirley Temple Classic Comes To DVD in Restored Versions !.......2006-06-23
1935's "The Little Colonel" is one of four feature films Shirley Temple made for Fox Studios and is also one of my favorites of her films ! Set in the Civil War,Temple plays a young girl to her already gruff, but lovable grandfather colonel (played well by Lionel Barrymore) as they try to patch up their troubled family, but things get in the way with Temple's father in a bad loan deal with his so-called 'friends'.This is the film that features the classic and much-imitated dancing on the stairs routine with Temple and co-star Bill Robinson, the first of four films they would do together."Gone With The Wind" it isn't,but with a stellar cast, good solid direction by David Butler, and the classic dance sequence, this is a very good and well-made film with careful pace, hilarious scenes, and serious moments that will appeal to any member of the family old or new ! Recommended !
ABOUT THE DVD:
This is the very first time that Fox has released this very good film on DVD as part of the Volume 3 Collection of Temple's films which contains both a restored black & white version of the film (with the original Technicolor ending) and a brand-new digitally remastered colorized version as well. The restored black & white print used here on this disc is superb,if not very very good with a few instances of film grain and scratches.Speaking of the Technicolor ending, previous video releases of this film inexplicably edit out the ending of the film, notably in the original 1994 colorized VHS version, but here its been beautifully restored and shows signs of grain and very seldom contrast. As for the new colorized version,it completely blows away the horrendously bad original colorized version from a few decades before as Legend Films always does an excellent job restoring and remastering their colorized films to DVD,it too retains the original Technicolor ending from the original release, but the Legend colorized version is more saturated and well-balanced and carefully recolorized as the original version. The extras (hence the four star rating) include the two same unrestored trailers for both "Heidi" and "Little Miss Broadway" that also appear on other recent Fox Temple DVD's,but it also has a rare Fox Movietone Newsreel excerpt that celebrates the star's 7th birthday and runs one whole minute.Purists will definitely stick to the original b&w,but this film's colorized appeal will bring back a dejavu dream to "Gone With The Wind" in terms of the Civil War backdrop and oh,of course that too co-starred Hattie MacDaniel who plays the maid in "Colonel".Well recommended by film buffs and classic family film fans alike !
little miss wonder.......2006-02-21
she sings dances acts and charms you all through the movie.a delightful and moving movie how this little girlfinally touched the heart of her grandfather who had rejected her because of her mothers choiceof marrying a man her father dissaproved of.
Temple, Barrymore, and Bill "BoJangles" Robinson..a Treasure.......2005-03-07
This review refers to "The Little Colonel" (VHS/20th Fox Family Feature)...
A very young Shirley Temple holds her own with the likes of Lionel Barrymore, Bill "BoJangles" Robinson and Hattie McDaniel, in this touching Civil War drama.
Little Lloyd Sherman(Temple), has just returned to the South with her mother as they wait the return of her father from duty. They move into a cottage, right next door to the mean old Colonel Lloyd(Barrymore), who happens to be Little Lloyd's grandfather. Years earlier the Colonel told his daughter that the door of their great mansion would never be open to her again, as she ran off to marry the man she loved, a Yankee!
Colonol Lloyd is a stubborn old curmudgeon who's heart has hardened to his daughter. He has met his match though, in our stubborn "Little Colonel", as Shirley works her magic on him(and us), and he slowly warms to his grandchild's charms. But..Shirley's job is not quite done, when the Sherman family is in trouble, little Lloyd must convince her grandfather to come to the rescue.
The film is one that confirms that Temple was one of the best child actresses to ever grace the screen. Her emotions seem authentic and it is a real treat to watch her work her magic on both Barrymore and McDaniel(pre-Gone With The Wind), who were also a joy to watch perform. And if that is not treat enough, Shirley and Bill Robinson do two wonderful tap dance numbers together, that are treasures to watch on their own.
If you haven't seen this one, you should know that there are a couple of scenes of dialouge, between the Colonel and the African Americans that work for him, and some children, that will be offensive. Unfortunatley this was probably though, a very realistic portrayal of the treatment they recieved and is very much a part of this film and history, just as the treament of women in many of the films of this era(including Gone With The Wind)is offensive to us now as well.
This edition is colorized, and I thought the conversion to color was very well done. There was an occasional color(red tones on a black and white checked dress) that looked like it didn't belong, but for the most part, I thought the color brought out many details of the film that might have gone unnoticed. Also having this film colorized may make it easier to share this cinematic treasure with a new generation.
Enjoy...Laurie

Perhaps because it was Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers's penultimate picture together for RKO, or perhaps because it is more romantic comedy than musical, <I>Carefree</I> tends to be a neglected entry in the series. This is unfortunate, because it retains many of the elements that made the duo so popular while also breaking new ground. Fred plays Tony Flagg, a psychoanalyst who is asked by his friend Steve (Ralph Bellamy) to try to figure out why his fiancée, Amanda Cooper (Ginger), keeps breaking off their engagement. During the course of treatment, and in a reversal of the usual pattern, Ginger falls for Fred and begins to pursue him. The emotionally repressed doctor resists, leading to a number of comic encounters, as well as a moment of genuine heartbreak. Other innovations include Fred's dance on a driving range, a slow-motion dream sequence (which was going to be shot in color until budget concerns won out), Fred and Ginger's first screen kiss, and some of Ginger's best turns as a comic actress. More familiar elements include Ginger fronting the band at the start of a large company dance number ("The Yam," which failed to catch on as a dance craze), an expert if skimpy Irving Berlin score including the lovely ballad "Change Partners," and of course fabulous, high-flying dancing. Fred and Ginger fans can't afford to miss <I>Carefree</I>. <I>--David Horiuchi</I>
Description
Steve Arden is frustrated with his fiancee, singer Amanda Cooper, when she breaks off their engagement for the third time. He enlists the aid of his friend psychologist/hypnotist Dr. Tony Flagg. Although Amanda falls in love with Tony, he hypnotizes her and convinces her to love Steve. After the treatment, it is Tony who is mesmerized.

Still my favorite.......2007-02-27
This was the first movie of Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers I remember seeing. I still love it & would still LOVE to wear a dress like Ginger wore during the most awesome dances she & Fred shared (the hypnotizing I call it)
Why can't we have glamor like that anymore?
Ginger looks fantastic ; Fred is debonair . . ........2007-02-20
So by the time they made CAREFREE, the Astaire and Rogers duo were tapping in to the changing times. The movie, therefore is both less and more than their other films. It is less ball gown and tails and more like the people who were their devoted audience. We get escapism but of a more accessible kind in this slice of the radio-listening and golf-playing late Thirties America in this vehicle.
The plot combines a hypnotist-practicing psychiatrist (Fred) and a very popular radio singer (Ginger) with Fred's-best-friend-slash-Ginger's-boyfriend (Ralph Belamy) completing the love triangle. There are some great comedic bits--especially when Ginger runs amuck on the air just when she is pitching a commercial that is supposed to be plugging the sponsor's toothpaste (funny, funny, funny).
The Irving Berlin songs are charming if not quite the popular sensation that tunes from some of the earlier films had been. The same is true of the dance they create, "The Yam" which is great to watch but is more of the novelty number than they may have wished, especially given the long life of "The Carioca" (FLYING DOWN TO RIO) and "The Continental" (THE GAY DIVORCEE), which people continued to dance for years. It is great to see them go over the top with this, their most ambitious up and over the furniture dance routine, but who, pray tell, is going to do a dance about a sweet spud? Well then again there was the "Mashed Potato"...
Throughout the film, Ginger looks fantastic as always especially in the dress with the lightening zap and the heart; Fred is debonair in a wardrobe you could just as easily wear today as in the `30s.
The running critique through all the Fred and Ginger films was that they do not kiss on screen--and one could argue when you dance like that who needs to kiss. In an earlier film, they do kiss just off screen, behind a door (SWING TIME). Here, in this movie, in the "Color Blind" number they fix that problem by kissing in front of the camera and since it is done in a dream sequence slow motion, they more than make up for lost time.
This is the last of their series for RKO.
More Comedy Than Music in the Still-Delightful Eighth Astaire-Rogers Pairing.......2006-11-06
In the eighth of ten screen appearances together, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers were firmly established as Hollywood's leading dancing pair. What is interesting about this 1938 entry is that it feels less like a musical and more like a screwball farce with musical interludes composed by Irving Berlin. The other less tangible aspect is that one can sense the two were growing in different directions at this particular juncture. While Astaire is still his debonair, nimble-footed self and as immaculate a dancer as ever there was onscreen (watch his golfing solo for proof), Rogers seems to find surer footing as a crack comedy actress this time around. That's not to say they don't create magic when they dance. Indeed they do, an especially wonderful treat captured crisply on the newly released DVD, but you can somehow feel the beginning of the end.
Credited to no less than seven writers, the nonsensical plot focuses on singer Amanda Cooper, a radio star who has broken off her engagement three times to Stephen Arden, a rich bon vivant who spends an inordinate amount of time at the country club. Concerned about her flightiness but convinced that she is the one for him, he consults with his psychiatrist friend, Dr. Tony Flagg. Upon Stephen's insistence, Amanda goes to see Tony, and things immediately start off on the wrong foot when she overhears some of Tony's insensitive remarks about women on a dictaphone. Amanda and Tony eventually bury the hatchet over an accident-prone bike ride and become friends. You can probably figure out the rest of the complications that occur.
Even though Astaire acquits himself well as Tony (a rare role where he is not portraying a professional entertainer) and Ralph Bellamy gamely plays yet another third-wheel role as Stephen, it is really Rogers who dominates the comedy scenes with her sharp timing and spirited manner. Moreover, the dance numbers don't disappoint with a lovely dream sequence set to "(I Used to Be) Colorblind" and a concluding romantic pas-de-deux cast under a hypnotic spell in "Change Partners". But my personal favorite is "The Yam", a jazzy, acrobatic number meant to replicate the late-thirties dance crazes. With Astaire bouncing Rogers on a series of cushiony chairs and then repeatedly twirling her airborne over his outstretched leg, this one may be my favorite of all their screen dances based on their sheer energy and athleticism.
For whatever reason, the supporting cast is not nearly as memorable as other Astaire-Rogers films at the time with Luella Gear looking a little too young as Amanda's Aunt Cora, Clarence Kolb as crabby Judge Travers and a young Jack Carson as Tony's helpful clinic assistant (doing a pretty decent Japanese accent over the phone). While the use of psychoanalysis must have been quite novel at the time, it feels rather clichéd now. Nonetheless, Astaire and Rogers still make magic regardless of the story contrivance. The 2006 DVD contains two vintage extras - a twenty-minute, tap dancing short called "Public Jitterbug #1" about an outlaw jitterbug dancer, and a brief cartoon, "September in the Rain", where famous icons displayed on packaged foods of the day come to life.
Ginger Takes Center Stage (DVD Review).......2006-10-26
In this eighth installment of Fred & Ginger films, Ginger displays her talents not only as a dancer but also as an actress and a singer. She performs all three simultaneously in The Yam. She causes mischief while under the hypnotic influence of Tony Flagg (Fred Astaire), throwing sticks and dinner rolls, breaking glass, driving erratically, and shooting skeet. The psychiatry is definitely unconventional, but it is a comedy after all. The slow motion dancing in the dream sequence is very smooth and kind of cool. A running joke where Aunt Cora (Luella Gear) keeps telling Judge Joe Travers (Clarence Kolb) to sit down adds a couple of more laughs. Typecasting prevails here; look for Hattie McDaniel (Gone with the Wind) playing a maid here, too.
In the vintage short "Public Jitterbug No. 1" a group of "Feds" is out to catch Jitterbug Dancer #1. The tap dancing is superb. The cigarette and match-eating routine is a neat trick. (1939 Run Time 19:01)
In the WB cartoon "September in the Rain" the labels of packaged goods in a general store come to life and perform. A written preface comments on how racist it is. However, the stereotyping did not bother me, and I would not have even noticed if they did not point it out. Nevertheless, I am glad they were sensitive about it. (1937 Run Time 4:39)
Note: No featurette, running commentary, or theatrical trailer is on this DVD, which is why I gave it four stars instead of five.
The amazing golf ball dancing sequence!!!!!!!!.......2006-06-12
Look at Amazon's description of the whole movie and the other reviewers, I'm going to write about my favourite scenes!
My favourite scene in this movie is the 'golf ball dancing sequence!'
The track is called 'Loch Lomond Swing' - Chapter 5.
I've got this movie as part of The Fred And Ginger collection - volume 1.
About a year ago, my dad told me about this golf ball dancing sequence he'd seen several years ago, probably in 1987 when Fred Astaire died.
My dad really wanted to see this one sequence again, and I was interested to see it too!
I remember believing I'd found it when I first purchase 'Holiday Inn' which had the sequence called 'Puttin on the Ritz' in the special features section, it's on the film called 'Blue Skies' which is a region 1 film, my dvd player is multi-region so I'm able to play it!
This sequence has Fred using a walking stick as a golf club and hitting imaginary golf balls! I was disappointed when I'd gotten dad and mum to sit down and watch this finding out it wasn't the sequence dad was looking for but he enjoyed the 'Puttin on the Ritz' sequence anyway!
One evening I was trying to find out on the internet which film had this golf ball dancing sequence. Eventually I went onto Google and typed in something like 'Fred Astaire - golf ball dancing' and found it was on the film 'Carefree!' Which I was sure I'd already got!
And found this film on my Fred and Ginger collection!
I found the sequence, I was practically crying because I knew this must be what my dad was looking for!
This time I told dad I've found the sequence, last time I didn't tell him, I just got dad and mum to sit down to surprise them thinking Puttin on the Ritz was the right one!
Dad was thrilled to see this sequence again, and we watched it together twice! I had already watched a few times the night before, but I'm still obsessed with this one sequence alone!
Since this wonderful moment other friends have had the pleasure of seeing this sequence and there's more friends my dad wishes to watch it with in the future!
There's also a song called 'The Yam', Ginger Rogers starts singing it then Fred Astaire joins in, then the real dancing begins!
The best part of that song is near the end when Fred puts his leg on each table while Ginger jumps over it spinning round each other is continuous circles without stopping eight times! My dad watched this sequence recently about a week or two ago! He liked the dancing sequence but not so much the song, but I like both the song and the dancing!
I haven't watched the whole film all the way through yet, so this is only about my favourite parts.
I hope this review is helpful to you.
Happy watchings!

NICE MICKEY ROONEY FILM.......2005-01-30
THIS MOVIE IS GREAT IF JUST TO SEE MICKEY ROONEY! ALTHOUGH MICKEY ALWAYS DESERVED MORE THAN WHAT HE WAS HANDED. IN MY OPINION THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A MORE TALENTED ACTOR IN THE MOVIES. HE MAKES ME LAUGH, HE MAKES ME CRY, HE MAKES ME HAPPY! GOD BLESS AMERICA! ANYHOW< THE MOVIE PLOT IS PRETTY GOOD! MICKEY DOES A OUTSTANDING JOB AS ALWAYS!
