Wes Craven's 1984 horror film is a better movie than it is generally credited for being. Forget the tawdry sequels; this highly original, almost surrealist work stars Robert Englund as a mutilated monster who kills teenagers during their dreams. Craven, who only directed one Elm Street sequel (Wes Craven's New Nightmare), takes the Hitchcockian step of layering in psychological explanations for the terror and then proving them all irrelevant in the face of mindless evil. The horror in the film is emotionally raw, in contrast to the overimaginative set pieces of most of the sequels that followed; and the final scene is as deeply unsettling as anything Luis Buñuel ever committed to film. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

4 out of 5 stars The behind the scenes info is well worth the price.......2007-06-07

I won't go too in depth into the story. If you don't know who Freddy Krueger is then you've been out of the pop cultural loop for well over two decades. What I will say is this DVD gives a great deal of info behind one of the classic slashers of the 1980s. Finally seeing the two alternate endings as well as listening to Wes Craven's commentary on his best movie helped to deepen the respect I have for this masterpiece, and yes, this is an excellent film.

5 out of 5 stars Truly one of the best.......2007-05-31

Freddy's debut. This film has it all, scares, gore, blood, thrills, and Freddy in his best scariest movie. This is a Nightmare On Elm Street, pleasent dreams.

5 out of 5 stars Whatever you do: Don't fall asleep!.......2007-04-05

You won't fall asleep during or after you watch these movies.
A revolutionary series of movies that every movie buff should own.

Freddy Kruger is the worst monster that you will ever run into in your dreams. Trust me when I tell you: if you haven't seen these movies you will be frightened for a long time after. Drink lots of coffee ...and what ever you do ...don't fall asleep!

the infifilm version sucks (2 disc dvd) it paused alot while the other one disc version worked!

3 out of 5 stars Nostalgic for Generation-X . . . But Lost on Youngsters . . ........2007-02-05

I dig this film . . . BUT . . .

If you can imagine, only four of my twenty-six film-students have seen this work: and this is an advanced horror-film class!! So if you think this is a slasher-staple . . . apparently not with "Generation Y."

I was pretty excited to screen the film. But my students' luke-warm reception of Craven's work was pretty infectious (horror tends to be a communal experience like that!) Their boredom became my boredom...and though the jokes fell-flat with them, they did find the admittedly shaky acting to be humorous. In retrospect, I suppose Freddy works better as the "caricature" he has become than the half-baked (pun-intended) monster from the 1984 original. (I think the horror-enthusiast side of me loves Freddy best in 1987's "A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors" while the scholarly side loves the postmodern Freddy in 1994's "A New Nightmare" . . . yes, I realize I am being very Kellogg's "Frosted Shredded Wheats"!)

Many people post about the "killings" being spectacular. This is not entirely true. The first death is awesome -- no doubt! But Depp's death is beyond uneventful -- it is as though Craven drained his reservoir of ideas and decided that Depp's bed should consume him - it's pretty unforgivable as horror, but at least it's funny.

What is valuable about this film is that we have a "Final Girl" (see Carol Clover's "Men, Women and Chain Saws: Gender in the Modern Horror Film") that not only fights for survival but plots the death of the film's monster. Nancy becomes fearless . . . and a master-tactician. This progressive thinking is pretty impressive if we consider the conservative Reagan-years (1981-1989).

While Craven has developed his craft and produced more technically sophisticated films like "Scream" and "Red-Eye" (note that I did not say 'better"), "Nightmare on Elm Street" was a HUGE phenomenon in its time (and I think that says something about its horror legacy).

So though this isn't comparable to "serious" slasher-films like Carpenter's "Halloween" or Hooper's "Chainsaw," (but, seriously, was it ever trying to be?!) it is critical to the genre. So, prepare to be underwhelmed by the special-effects (if you are young and somewhat impatient) . . . but, like I tell my students . . . watch it so you can understand the genre as a whole:)

English-professor-turned-horror-auteur Wes Craven brings both careers to play in this ingenious reinterpretation of the <I>Nightmare on Elm Street</I> series as a modern-day fairy tale--a sort of Hansel and Gretel for big kids. Heather Langenkamp, star of the original film, plays Heather Langenkamp, an actress and mother wracked with nightmares as Los Angeles is rocked with unexplained earthquakes. Meanwhile, her son starts sleepwalking and croaking Freddy Krueger threats. Is it a coincidence that Wes Craven (playing himself) is turning his own troubled dreams into a new screenplay, which he calls "a sort of nightmare in progress"? According to his visions, the imaginary Freddy has become the embodiment of ancient evil and is trying to break out of his movie prison and into the physical world. It's a rather literal and glib explanation, but words have never been Craven's strong suit. His central thesis, the cultural importance of stories, is more resonant in the web of imagery arising from dreams, movies, and the subconscious. Robert Englund and John Saxon play themselves and their movie characters (though this Freddy is decidedly less wisecracking and more demonic). It's a thoughtful, imaginative, and often gripping modern horror film that echoes with suggestions of <I>The Exorcist</I> and <I>Poltergeist</I>. Though less of a fun-house thrill ride than previous <I>Nightmare</I>s, it's scarier and smarter than any of the other series sequels. <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>

5 out of 5 stars Back to the original mould and melting master.......2007-02-15

It's not enough to bring Freddy Krueger back to life one more time after his official death. But Wes Craven has to come back too with the original characters, Nancy and her stubborn cop of a father. But we cannot really revive characters in a film so many years after their first appearance. So Wes Craven pushes what he calls « only make believe » one iota further and farther. Freddy was only a disguise for a real bad spirit in the world (Anne Rice has done that with her vampires and the Queen of the Damned, or Stephen King has also used this formula with his Dark Man in quite a few novels, liek The Stand, and short stories) and this really bad spirit has decided to come back to the real world once and for all and under his own identity if possible, or under that of Freddy Krueger if the minds of people are obsessed by his existence. This evil spirit is of course the devil himself and it will be revealed in the very last scene. So the actors are playing their real parts and Freddy is invading their real world. It is then « make believe power two ». And it is all the more efficacious and effective because the actors are themselves and no fake identities. Wes Craven brings along his particularly caustic mind and spirit and really gets the mickey out of medical authorities, doctors, women and blacks alike, and all the fake myth about the protection of kids first and for all against their own parents. Wes Craven definitely seems to accuse society to be the real culprit, the real cause of all problems with kids, and grown-ups too. This society that classifies everyone in one little box and that can put a six year old boy in the schizophrenia box without realizing that it is going to make him schizophrenic. The classification creates the items that are classified in it. Any taxonomy is our own creation, our own delusion and we must get rid of all these taxonomies to maybe recapture some sanity and balance. But since Wes Craven is back do not be surprised if you recognize some tricks like the crazy phone calls borrowed from Scream and so many other films (it always works anyway). That's part of the game. Wes Craven borrows from everyone, himself included, and just shakes the cocktail differently and changes dressings. The sauce always becomes slightly more piquante when it is served a second time by our waiter Wes Craven. He even visualizes the first destruction of Freddy, the lynching of this child molester who attacks males first to kill them, and women second to enjoy their slow suffering and their yelling. So Freddy Krueger is roasted to death a second time, and it is when his face becomes the horny - ah ah funny ! - head of the devil. Can we hope the saga is really finished now ? Probably not. There must be some forgotten sequel somewhere, though seven is a magical number and the point has been made that it is not movies that make children epileptic but all the Freddy Kruegers, Tommyknockers, Candymen, and other boogy boogy bogeymen overfed on beetle juice instead of milk, kept in the cupboards of our minds.

2 out of 5 stars for die hard fans only.......2007-01-26

I really love the first Nightmare on Elm street movie. the rest of the series are just absurd and borderline ridiculous. I thought this movie would be better since Wes Craven was directing/writing it.
In my opinion it's everything but scary. The concept of this evil entitity trapped in stories for eons is interesting, however not very well explored in my opinion. The scenes remind us of the first Nightmare on Elm Street, a bit cool when it comes to nostalgia but they completely have no surprise effect whatever.
It was nice to see some people of the original movie, like John Saxon and Nick Corrie. Yet they have such small roles which undermines their presence in the movie.Corrie doesn't even have a line.
The "scary" scenes are actually hilarious at some points. This movie could have been better in my opinion...

5 out of 5 stars The Best Nightmare.......2006-12-30

"Wes Craven's New Nightmare" is set in 'The Real World', where "A Nightmare on Elm Street" is just a movie. In it, Heather Langenkamp (playing a fictionalized version of herself) is on a promotional tour for the 10th anniversary of the original. The problem is that both she and her son Dylan are dreaming of Freddy Krueger, at the same time someone is calling her house in Freddy voice making threats. She meets Wes Craven and he tells her he's been working on a new 'Nightmare' script, and soon things get much worst as Earthquakes start happening, and then crew members from the original movies start dying. Eventually Craven (who also plays himself in addition to writing and directing) explains the Freddy is sort of real, more specifically he is the latest incarnation of an ancient evil that thrives on cultural fear. Soon Heather is in a struggle to fight off Freddy and save her son.

The last few "Elm Street" movies have been pretty bad, especially "Freddy's Dead". And so Wes Craven returned to the series and made things right with this hyper surreal entry that takes the original movie's concepts of fantasy, reality and blurring the two and taking it even further with movies, kind of life imitating art taken to the extreme. I love the concept, and it has been done well before (i.e. Arnold Schwarzenegger's "The Last Action Hero" and John Carpenter's "In the Mouth of Madness"). But Craven took a already well known icon and made it bigger, more mythic and epic. The scope of the movie really eclipses anything else I think he's ever done before. This is not a slasher movie (though the deaths are impressively gruesome) but a thinking man's horror movie, an Art House Elm Street movie.

The acting is brilliant. Heather Langenkamp plays a mother who dose not want her child exposed to horror movies, even though she can trace her own success to it. John Saxon plays himself and Donald Thompson when Freddy finally obliterates reality at the end. Wes Craven is also a supporting player in his movie, as the man with the answers, who is trying to finish the script before Freddy finishes Heather. Robert Englund appears three times in the movie. He plays himself, an actor who
is scared to death of the frightening reality of his creation. He plays movie Freddy, the incarnation who hams it up and jokes around with fans at a talk show. And then thee's demon Freddy, who is back to basics evil, dripping with menace and threat. He plays all of them well, but the more evil Freddy is he best he's done in years. Freddy is scary again.

I always thought there were lost opportunities to have Craven and Englund confront the demon Freddy; Craven would be able to best him, while Englund would die the horrible death. But still this is the best of the sequels, just shy of being as great as the original by an inch. Defiantly a thinking man's horror movie beside "The Exorcist".

5 out of 5 stars A MUCH-needed improvement........2006-12-23

After the horrible Freddy's Dead, Wes Craven, the creator of Freddy Krueger, sat down and feverishly wrote the script of what may be the most interesting Nightmare movie ever. Wes Craven's New Nightmare is about reality. Heather Langenkamp, who starred as Nancy in the first, plays herself, Robert Englund, the guy who plays Freddy, is himself as well. The whole movie is supposed to take place where the Nightmare movies really are just movies. However, after Freddy was killed off in the 6th movie, the evil that was in them - an evil entity which has become used to looking like Freddy - has finally escaped, and plans to wreak its evil on the world as Freddy. Another interesting thing in the movie is that it's as if Wes' script for the movie becomes a reality, and there's even a shot of the script that shows everything that was said in a conversation betwee Wes and Heather. Freddy (who is still played by Robert Englund) looks a lot more evil than in any of the other Nightmares. His glove also isn't a glove. It's as if it's a part of him now, as you can see vains and what-not on it.

I'dsay more about this movie, but Daniel Jolley in the spotlight review already said pretty much everything that needs to be said about this movie. So if you gave up on the 6th movie, there's a good chance this movie will return your fanship of the series, and it's bound to put a smile on any fan's face. Wes Craven's New Nightmare is made to look VERY realistic. But don't worry, it's just a movie.... or is it?

4 out of 5 stars Gruesome and Inviting..........2006-11-05

I recently borrowed a DVD in this franchise, thinking it was this movie. It actually had the word final in it, but it was from around 1991. It was awful, see my review on it, a couple weeks ago.

But this was the classic I expected and appreciated. This was a terrific sequel, and one that the Director can rest his acting cap on. I really loved the first movie in the series, and this, hopefully will be the last one, and a great finish.

5 out of 5 stars Survivors unite against Freddy Krueger.......2007-02-03

New director for this third episode. The modern world is growing and we are starting to have the information highway coming into the picture. The new architecture is very striking and powerful. We come back to a girl as the center of the film, but at once that girl is living with her mother and her male guests. But also at once she is moved to a hospital where she meets a whole gang of young people who are Freddy's victims. Freddy does not try to make anyone kill the others. At first he tries to terrorize them into committing suicide. Society reacts as can be expected : the kids are calling for some attention and their dreams and suicides are nothing but the symptoms of their guilt. A junior doctor reacts positively when a psychiatrist comes into the picture, and this psychiatrist is the surviving girl of a preceding episode. This leads to a psychiatric ward in a hospital with all these kids, and group therapy. This time Freddy has a group against him, a group that can remain united, or at least the survivors can, and they can start a war against this Freddy. The film also densifies Freddy Krueger with a mother who was a medical personnel in the old psychiatric ward of the very hospital in which we are. This wing of the building was closed when this young woman was by accident left behind in the ward surrounded by all kinds of crazy criminals. She was raped and many other things and Freddy is her son. Even worse she lost her head, though not completely and could then dedicate the end of her life to religion. She became a nun. The father of the young psychiatrist who has survived Freddy was one of those who burnt Freddy to death when he was caught after kudnapping and killing twenty children. His remains had never been buried. The father will finally accept to tell where the bones are. During that time the kids and the young psychiatrist are getting into the dream to save the others who have been taken and to get rid of Freddy. They will not all come back, but they will come back after Freddy's destruction by the junior doctor burying the bones and sprinkling them with holy water before covering them with earth. It is the first time the christian theme is brought in with holy water and a crucifix, hence with a parallel to vampires. The film then is a new twist in the general fabric invented by Wes Craven and it is quite effective. We must go on in this saga to see where we are going, where we are taken to. Be sure Freddy will live forever and ever, ever after the end of each film.

4 out of 5 stars Freddy really gets going.......2006-12-27

Freddy Krueger (Roberet Englund) has tracked down the last of the "Elm Street Kids" to Westin Hills, a mental asylum where all the kids are being treated for anti-social behavoir caused by their dreams (little wonder with Krueger after them). Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp returning from the original) becomes a resident at the hospital to in order to help the kids fight Freddy. But helping Freddy is the doubting thomas doctor (Creig Wesson) and their own prejudices against each other.

Easily the best of the early sequals Elm Strret 3 is actually the begining of the larger mythology of Freddy, as we are introduced to his mother Amamda, a nun who was raped by inmates years before, resulting in Freddy's birth. It also starts the trend of Freddy using the kids' weaknesses against them, like the recovering herion addict and the fantsy obsessed kids dying by their own devices. The idea of 'Elm Street Kids' seems streaching it a little, but I guess more than three sets of parents had to help kill Freddy, right? Director Chuck Russell really pulls out the stops on special effects, while some are a little hokey (though not a serious crime) the snake Freddy and pig gag really stand out.

The kids are really nice kids and are well played by the young actors, most notably a very young Patrica Arquette. I liked the kids and could relate to them and thier (real world) problems; alienation, authority figures not beleiving them, ect. This intallment also has a pre-stardom Larry Fishburne as sypathetic orderlie Max who, while he certainly dosn't beleive in Freddy, really likes the kids wants to help them. And of course there is Englund's Freddy. It is still early in the series so Freddy hasn't become a clown yet; though he's on his way. He is still dark and believably a serious threat.

This is really the start of the franchise here. While I loved part 2, this is really where Freddy became mythic. The only real problem with "Elm Street 3" was that is weas a dark fantasy-adventure, but not scary really. Oh well, that can be over looked.

3 out of 5 stars I'll Show You the Horror.......2006-12-04

My dad, ever the moralist, never allowed me to watch Freddy Krueger movies as a kid. He said that they led to the discrimination against burn victims, and that he would take no part in that. So I'm in catch up mode with this series. This is the second that I've seen in the series after I watched the original a few months ago. Overall, it is a step down, though not a massive one. Nancy (Heather Langenkamp) from the original is brought in as a savior of sorts to a bunch of kids in a psych ward placed there because of "suicide" attempts. Patricia Arquette, looking surprisingly hot in her younger days, takes on the role of Kristen who is our main character here. From there everything else is pretty much predictable. Kids try not to fall asleep, they eventually do, Freddy slices and dices. Only in this chapter the goofiness factor is turned up full blast. Look, there's Freddy up in the sky playing the role of puppet master, oh and now he has turned into a TV set, and now a creepy little doll. There is also this terrible little twist that these kids gain certain powers when they fall asleep. The scene in which they come together for a group dream so that they can show off their powers couldn't have fallen any flatter for me. I am also hoping that somebody could explain to me the scene in which one of the kids turns into the "Wizard Master" and shoots a very 1980's pre-CGI green lightning bolt out of his hand to destroy a murderous wheelchair Freddy had turned loose on him. . .because I'm at a loss. To me that scene captures everything wrong with this film. Also, the less said about the scene where Freddy's skeleton comes to life the better.

But under all this kookiness there are some good messages to be found here. We, of course, get the traditional, fight your fears and believe in teamwork. But we also get the more unconventional lesson of never listen to your elders because they don't know what the hell they are talking about. Throughout this film (and the original) every decision made by a figure of authority turns out to be dead wrong. Here the only things more evil than Freddy are the clueless authority figures who serve the kids up to him with their idiocy. On the flipside we also get the kids who are punished for "Overt sexuality" (shock!). One if left for dead with Freddy after chasing after an easy, eager blond. The director, Chuck Russell, does find time for a striptease first. I guess he'll be sex on Freddy's hit list. I do wish that I could go back in time and enjoy this film for what it is. But my eyes have seen too many movies and have turned critical on me. So I know that the acting here is bad and the special effects (which are used liberally) are so horrible your jaw will drop. There is a kinetic energy at work here that makes it an easy pill to swallow. I will also admit that the silliness here does cut both ways. Most of the kills are borderline brain dead, but they are also interesting and eye-catching. Russell wasn't shy about screwing this one up, and oddly enough I admire him for that. **3/4

3 out of 5 stars Don't watch the second one.......2006-12-01

For me, the second one was absolutely diabolical, and seeing as I'd just bought the seven disc set, I was angry, and reluctant to watch the rest. I was persuaded, and found myself actually enjoying Dream Warriors. It continues on a few years after the first one, and it's like the second one never happened, as there's no apparent reference to it.

Dream Warriors is made all the better for a higher budget and bringing back Heather Langenkamp. She's definitely an asset to the movies and although she doesn't appear again until the seventh movie (as herself, strangely enough), hopefully the movies will continue the same as this.

A very, very young Patricia Arquette appears in this, her first film, and thankfully she has managed to hone her acting over the years. She's laughable in this. Also look out for "Larry" Fishburne!!! Larry, good grief.

The story is basically simple: a young girl (Arquette) is put into a psychiatric ward, with others, who discover they're all dreaming about the same man. They find an understanding adult in the form of Heather, who was of course in the original. She's older, wiser, and specialising in this kinda thing. She tries to help him, but when she finds out Arquette's character can bring others into her dream, they agree to go in and tackle Freddy.

What makes this film better than the second one, is the deaths are becoming bigger and better. One girl dies being put through a TV during Critters - she dreamt of being an actress. Then there's the whole back story to Freddy. We find out his mother was raped repeatedly, and actually appears in the film - a little twist in the plot. He was also never properly buried, and needs to be buried in holy ground, and that will finally get rid of him. Obviously not enough to spawn another 4 sequels.

My suggestion is that you skip the second one, and move straight from part one to part three. Honestly, you will never know the difference. Definitely the best of the series so far. Look out for a severely phallic Freddy snake, and a very cool stop motion puppet.

Wes Craven's horror pictures always have a few wild ideas knocking around inside them, and this 1989 slashfest is no exception. The electrocution of a mass murderer turns into a kind of cosmic jump-start: evil Horace Pinker is reborn as an elusive electronic phantom, capable of leaping from one body to another. (This trick is also used to good effect in <I>The Hidden</I> and <I>Fallen</I>.) Pinker's a stinker, and Craven was clearly trying to set up another franchise villain in the vein of his <I>Nightmare on Elm Street</I> champ, Freddy Krueger--perhaps a bit too baldly. However, amidst the mayhem, the film's real subject is the poisonous presence of mass media, as Pinker (played by <I>The X-Files</I>' Mitch Pileggi) insinuates himself as a free-floating spirit run amok in television itself. In its own pulp way, <I>Shocker</I> gets at the heart of media-culture inanity quicker than a ten-week college class on the subject, and although Craven occasionally lapses into generic bloodletting, he always snaps right back with some crazy angle on the TV nation. The hero is played by a young Peter Berg, the <I>Chicago Hope</I> star who would go on to direct his own shocker, <I>Very Bad Things</I>. <I>Shocker</I> failed to catch on with audiences (somewhere there's a warehouse full of unsold Horace Pinker action figures), but it's definitely worth a look for horror fans. <I>--Robert Horton</I>

5 out of 5 stars This is a Shocker - Get Ready and Order It.......2007-03-09

I love this trashy, but scary film. It's a guilty pleasure, one not to share with minor children or females of the species.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Wes Craven movie.......2007-01-12

I liked this movie from when it started to when it ended. I didn't have any complaints about this movie at all. It had all of the "scares" of any horror film out there. It did take a small twist of how the killer comes back which I thought was ingenious. I won't give it away because it would spoil the movie to anyone that wants to watch it. I recommend this movie to anyone that likes the 80s horror flicks.

3 out of 5 stars THE SOLO JOURNEY OF HORACE PINKER.......2006-11-18

It's obvious that Wes Craven had high hopes for Horace Pinker to be another Freddy Krueger, but alas and alack, it didn't happen. Perhaps it's best. Although SHOCKER is a competent little thriller with some neat ideas, Pinker just isn't the kind of villain that could sustain as many films as the incomparable Freddy did. Mitch Pileggi does a great job as the bald-headed bad guy, but his shtick of being "electrified" would have been limited and eventually redundant. Taken on its own merits, though Craven delivers a well-done if not memorable 'shocker' in its own right. Peter Berg does a good job as the hero, and Michael Murphy is dependable as Berg's adopted father. Although the script is at times a little confusing and improbable, the entire effect is good for a few shocks and laughs.

1 out of 5 stars not realy very good.......2006-06-27

wes craven must have been tring to do the elm street thing again with this low brow non horror movie. a waste of film and time and the killer in this movie doesn't have 1/10 the scare factor of freddy!!!! skip it!!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars A Great Start To What SHOULD Have Been A Long-Running Series.......2005-08-28

With Horace Pinker, "Shocker" aims to create a new horror icon on par with Freddy Krueger or Jason Voorhees. It doesn't succeed the first time around, but with time it could have come close. Pinker is a menacing and original villain, visually distinctive as is necessary when you're going for the icon-level, and one of the most purely nasty villains in his vein. So when I say Shocker's lead didn't reach the level of a Freddy or a Jason that's not a put-down. It's a high mountain to climb to attain that kind of tremendous status, and this movie was off to a good start but sadly never got the chance to follow up on its potential with sequels that might have been even better. Maybe it's not too late. Apparantly "Sleepaway Camp", "Happy Birthday To Me" and a couple of other horror movies from a long way back are slated to be continued with new sequels (not remakes) after all this time, so who knows? Not every horror movie needs a sequel (a few, like "Dagon", "In The Mouth Of Madness" and "Mute Witness" come to mind that I think are best served Without one) and some that do call for a sequel only need one or two, but I think the field is best served when it has a few ongoing series where you can count on a new installment at least every two or three years on average. They don't have to run forever (except F13; that can go to Chapter Twenty and beyond as far as I'm concerned), but phase new ones in as others wrap out. In the 80s/early 90s, F13, Nightmare On Elm Street, Hellraiser, Halloween and a few others all came at a good clip, Most of the time delivering a chapter that was very good if not ouright outstanding. I would have liked for Shocker to have had a few more turns.

As for the single entry we got, the early minutes show the apprehension of the brutal, very sadistic Pinker while still in his human, non-supernatural form, and follows through with the trial and execution, at which point the character returns from the dead, having utilized some kind of dark magic that's transmuted him into some kind of cross between a ghost and an electrical entity travelling through the wires. And thus his rampage is continued and upped considerably. There's nothing likable about Horace, but he is a fearsome onscreen prescence and a good villain; well-played by Mitch Pileggi. The incredibly cute Cami Cooper, as the main female in the movie and the girlfriend of the character who becomes Pinker's primary adversary, is also very memorable, and without question hits the nail right on the head in the 'Visually Impressive' department. Very good but not really close to the best of its kind (hence part of the reason there should have been sequels - they could have picked up some of the potential that slipped through the cracks), I'm unsure whether to give this a strong three stars or a tentative four. I realize a lot of reviewers seem to think a three is a low rating, but I consider it pretty high; I prefer to leave the four-stars and five-stars for the really excellent/outstanding and for those that are among the best ever (now director Wes Craven's previous creation of a horror icon, the first Elm Street, got five stars and it would have been unthinkable to give it anything else). I guess I'll go with a really strong three and hope that doesn't make people think I'm cutting it short; on my scale a low three is still usually pretty good and "Shocker"'s a high 3-Star, about a seven, maybe 7.5, out of ten. Recommended.

A gore-happy "greatest horror hits" party disc, <I>Boogeymen</I> is a funky and somewhat baffling collection of contemporary horror movie madmen for the <I>Scream</I> generation. Seventeen serial killers and homicidal maniacs are represented in brief but complete scenes, from the classic (<I>Psycho</I>'s Norman Bates and Michael Myers from <I>Halloween</I>) to the curious (unknown New Zealand thriller <I>The Ugly</I>) to the preposterous (<I>Wishmaster</I>, <I>Leprechaun</I>, and Corbin Bernsen as <I>The Dentist</I>). Skewed for the video-age horror buff, this is a survey for the children of Freddie Krueger and Jason Voorhees who like their thrillers thick with blood and body parts. Where this scream-a-thon shines is in its presentation: the slickly engineered interactive DVD features optional Robert "Freddy Krueger" Englund commentary, playful pop-up "FlixFacts" trivia, trailers, quizzes, and bite-sized character bios, all accessed from snazzy, smooth, easy-to-navigate animated menus. <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>

4 out of 5 stars Not bad, but only something for horror fan's.......2004-12-16

First off I will say that this DVD is only for Horror movie fans. It is not a documentry, what it is a 50 minute long main presentation of the best horror movie icons. and it shows a quick intro of that charactor, then an actual scene of one of the films they where in, and then moves onto the next... there's ALMOST all the fav's of the horror genre....

- Jason Voorhees (Friday The 13th)
- Freddy Krueger (Nightmare on Elm St)
- Michael Myers (Halloween)
- Chucky (Childs Play)
- Blade (Puppet Master)
- Leprochaun (Leprachaun)
- Leather Face (Texas Chainsaw Masacre)
- Fisherman (I know what you did last summer)
- Ghost (Scream)
- Candyman (Candy man)
- Norman Bates (Phycho)
- Simon Cartright (The Ugly)
- Pin Head (Hellraiser)

But they have forgotten about a few that I thought should have been included...

- Skeleton Zombie (Return Of The Living Dead 1 + 2)
- Ghoulies (Ghoulies)
- Carrie White (Carrie)
- Evil Dead (Evil Dead Trilogy Villians ect..)
- Critters (Critters)
- Wicked Witch (Wizard Of Oz)
- Crypt Keeper (Tales from the crypt)
- Michael Jackson (Moonwalker)

The extra features are an Audio Commentary by Robert England (Freddy Krueger) which isnt something you'll listen to again I dont think, and you get an on screen trivia option which disaplys bits of information about the movie as it's playing the clip, i'd recomend you turn the trivia on and listen to the commentary at the same time to kill 2 birds with one stone.

There is a trivia game that is not worth looking at, you press start and it shows a picture and you just have to select what movie it's from, but there is no point, you can anser as many as ya want, it doesnt lead you to anything!

There is a biography of each of the people from the feature presnatation.

and Trailers to a couple of the movies on the feature, but not all of them.

There's also a link for anyone with a DVD on there computer, and your usual subtitles, 5.1 surround ect....

Overall: like I said, if you like horror movies, then you might like this if you care to know a bit of information on the films that you probably already knew, other wise it's not worth much, just seeing scenes from films together on one DVD is ok, but not lastingly thrilling, the scenes they chose couldve been better, they have picked some lame scenes to show in some areas. It would be great to see all of these horror icons meet on the big screen in an ultimate horror icon battle royal, but with all the copyright hassel to do something like that, this is most likely the closet we will get to see all of them together on the one show. I would recomend you rent it before you decide if you want to buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Boogeymen Great Tribute to Modern Horror.......2004-11-01

This past Halloween I found myself in a query. I wanted to watch a horror movie but I didn't know what I was in the mood for, and since I had to answer the door every so often I really didn't want a complex plot. I found "Boogeymen" in my collection and said PERFECT! And I was right. Little doses of Freddy, Jason, Chucky, Pinhead, Micheal Myers, Wishmaster, Leprechaun and many more, go a long way. The Trick or Treaters enjoyed seeing clips of these horror greats and I think I have found the perfect thing to play each Halloween. Also included are profiles of each killer, trailers for most films featured and an audio commentary by good ole Freddy himself. Sit back and enjoy the ride.

5 out of 5 stars A great genre movie must see for fans.......2005-09-10

This was the real gem! A small movie that really made most for it's budget. It was a great thrill-ride and a lot of fun. I have to admit that the basic story is totally Robocop rip-off, but still the movie knew exactly how to play the story and make it into something genuine and fun.

3 out of 5 stars Female Terminator.......2003-04-19

We have some sort of female Terminator here - who resurrected after death. The storyline is somewhat ok, but sometimes it makes a little awkward impression. If you just like to see a rather entertaining action movie, this one will do.

3 out of 5 stars dvd.......2002-03-03

the movie factoids just names the cast and crew, and a short bio and filmography of richard grieco. the making of is 4 min 51 sec long and contains clips from the howard stern show and entertainment tonight. unless you really love this movie i would suggest the vhs over the dvd.

5 out of 5 stars little unknown action gem.......2001-01-15

A low budget b movie, but is accually quite good. Basis is similair to a female RoboCop kinda concept, but The Demolitionist (Nicole Eggart) is not a robot, but a murdered vop, who's body is kept alive by a scientific enhanse plasma that has replaced her blood. Quite good. Action fans will like it.

1 out of 5 stars dumb, dumb, dumb.......1999-10-26

This is a tired old rehash of Robocop, with not enough action, and not enough plot. The dumbest thing is that the heroine, who has been reanimated against her will, chooses to die near the end, but is in the next scene inexplicably seen putting flowers on her grave. Anything for a happy ending.
