HBO caused a stir when it aired <I>If These Walls Could Talk</I>, a portrait of three women from three generations (all who occupied the same house at various times) who had unwanted pregnancies. HBO utilizes the same gimmick in the sequel, this time telling the story of women who love women.
The three stories of <I>If These Walls Could Talk 2</I> are uneven. Far and away the most powerful and moving story is the first, taking place in 1961, starring Vanessa Redgrave as a woman "widowed" when her partner of 50 years suddenly dies. Redgrave is phenomenal, and her piece alone makes this sequel worth watching. The 1972 portion stars Michelle Williams, who finds dealing with the sexual politics of the gay community increasingly more complex when she falls in love with a boyish woman (played by Chloë Sevigny). The most modern piece, taking place in 2000, portrays a contemporary lesbian couple (Sharon Stone and Ellen DeGeneres) determined to have a baby. The light nature of the story detracts from the more serious issues of the earlier segments. Despite the mixed fare, HBO once again proves itself on the cutting edge of moviemaking, with this rather daring film that will both provoke and entertain. <I>--Jenny Brown</I>
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2007-03-16
I love this film- it hits on numerous isssues without being too preachy. At different points, the film is funny, cute, serious, hot, and numerous other things. It's a classic.
HBO Rocks Part 2.......2007-01-14
This was an HBO original movie broadcast in 2000. This movie follows three lesbian stories in three different time periods. Vanessa Redgrave stars as a lesbian widow in 1961. Chloe Sevigny and Michelle Williams star as feminists in 1971. Sharon Stone and Ellen DeGeneres star as a modern day lesbian couple trying to have a baby. I found the story of Vanessa Redgrave to be the most touching. It speaks to the need for legal rights for same sex couples and a need for understanding.
Excellent.......2006-11-23
A beautiful, touching movie. Well directed and acted. The first story with Vanessa Redgrave is very touching. All three stories have a completely different view of lesbians and are very good. The third story with Ellen & Sharon is very humorous. With stars like Vanessa, Ellen & Sharon, how can this be anything but a very worthwhile film and well acted.
IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK 2.......2006-11-06
I LOVE THIS MOVIE A BIT MORE THAN #1 MOVIE "IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK", MAYBE CAUSE MORE UP TO DATE, AND MORE I COULD RELATE TO BEING IN MY LATE 40'S. BUT I COULD DEFINATELY RELATE WITH EACH OF THE PERIODS IN THIS MOVIE. THEY ALL SEEMED SO REAL TO ME. I COULD WATCH THIS MOVIE OVER AND OVER, WHICH I DO. ALL THE TIME.
Two out of three ain't bad........2006-09-07
If These Walls Could Talk 2 explores female same sex relationships in different eras, but in the same house.
The first story deals with an old woman who loses her longtime lover due to a fall from a ladder and the eventual death. The dead woman's son and daughter-in-law and granddaughter show up and basically take what is lawfully theirs, the house and its possessions. The old woman is left with nothing and is forced to start over somewhere else despite being in her 60s. I kept thinking to myself, all of this could have been avoided had the dead woman made a will. This story basically deals with how same sex couples don't have the same legal rights. Vanessa Redgrave, who plays the left-behind lover, can't even visit her companion in the hospital room because she's not a relative or spouse. This was definitely the heartwrenching one of the three vignettes.
The second story takes place during the women's feminist movement. Some college lesbian girls go to a gay bar where one of them, Michelle Williams, meets Chloe Sevigny and a romance develops. The only thing, Sevigny's character is butch. And Williams' friends have a problem with a woman acting like a man in order to live the lesbian lifestyle. They see it as defeating the purpose of being a lesbian in the first place. Pretty good performances all around. Nia Long and Natasha Leonne are in the story: both who have played lesbians in other movies.
The third segment deals with a lesbian couple trying to have a baby. It stars Ellen Degeneres and Sharon Stone. This one is boring. All you see is frantic anticipation and turkey basters. There is a surprising steamy sex scene. It's surprising because I never thought a sex scene with Ellen Degeneres could be steamy. I applaud Anne Heche as a director for being able to pull that off. But, it's still a less compelling story than the other two.
All in all, If These Walls...2 is a good movie. It's certainly more tolerable than its predecessor.

Abuse Is Not To Be Taken Lightly.......2006-12-18
That's the message here; and this is what can happen if action is not taken. Candace Cameron and Fred Savage leave their days as child stars behind in this 1996 NBC television movie, based on a true story. Stacy Collins (Cameron) is a junior in high school who is shy and uncertain, but when she begins dating handsome senior and star of the school wrestling team, Bobby Tennison (Savage), she feels loved and protected. But behind his charming exterior, Bobby's sweet behavior (leaving her flowers in her locker, giving her gifts, etc.), is a controlling, possessive nature which Stacy tries to dismiss. But he closely monitors her every move and feels threatened if she spends time away from him. Physical violence is commonly introduced. Their friends suspect that things are not as rosy as they seem, but only Stacy's best pal Nicky (Heather McComb) tries to persuade her to end the relationship. Trapped in the feelings of isolation and blaming herself for his inexcusable actions, Stacy lives in fear. Bobby's cousin informs Nicky that he had also mistreated his previous girlfriend (who transferred to to get away from him), and after yet another public fight (during a great school dance, where the nifty 50s is the theme), Stacy, encouraged by Nicky, tells Bobby that it's over. A truly unnerving moment in the hallway after she breaks it off, when he tells her he will never give her up. Through the wired glass of the classroom door his face is like cold, evil granite, his gaze like the black coals of hell. Bobby, under the guise of wanting to stay friends, asks her to come over to his house to give him a haircut. Inevitably, another spat occurs, and, instead of taking her home, he takes her out to a nearby lake where they had their first date. Only Bobby returns to the truck, to the horror of his friend Vince (Eric Balfour), and with blood on his hands. "If I can't have her, no one's gonna," Bobby chillingly states. Stacy is missing; her frantic mother Laura (Michelle Phillips), and friends search for clues, along with the local police; Stacy's ex-boyfriend is strangely calm. Vince, riddled with guilt, makes an anonymous call to the cops, telling them to go look out by the lake. He is eventually brought in for questioning, while Nicky informs Laura of Bobby's abusive tendencies. Vince tells what he knows, and then the investigation moves to Bobby, who finally cracks under the pressure. When Stacy refused to go back to him, he had slit her throat and dumped her body in the lake. Sally Jessy Raphael makes a special appearance as the judge who hands down the life sentence to a stone cold Bobby. She then admonishes all others involved for not speaking up - this is what can happen if you don't.
Those who remember Savage as the wholesome Kevin Arnold on "The Wonder Years" will be surprised at how effective he is - romantic and attractive one minute, angry and obsessive the next. The way Bobby treats his mother, his abusive father's past, and his anger in the wrestling ring are subtle hints of things to come (as is the moment when Stacy takes a shower at Nicky's house - it's pretty obvious that she is being watched). Cameron, who has always excelled at playing kind, naive, gentle characters, does a great job, as always. Heather McComb is the best friend every girl should have, while Michelle Phillips gives just the right amount of balance as the caring but distracted mother who is too busy with work and her own lowlife boyfriend (whom Stacy despises), to realize the dangerous situation her daughter is in.
Hopefully, stories like this will raise more awareness - too many people have looked the other way.
The DVD: This version is slightly different than the one that aired on television. Two Belinda Carlisle songs have been replaced with more current music. The only extras are trailers for direct to video films.
A message that never gets old.......2006-06-22
Candace Cameron and Fred Savage shake off the goody-goody images associated with the roles that brought them teen stardom on Full House and The Wonder Years. Cameron plays Stacy Collins, a normal high school girl full of insecurities who happens to land the class hunk. Savage is Bobby Tennyson, high school wrestler and all-around popular guy. When these two get together, Stacy finally knows what it feels like to be a part of the in-crowd and is so grateful she's willing to look past Bobby's numerous faults.
Their relationship starts off normal enough with Bobby wooing Stacy with flowers and love poems, but he gets progressively more possessive and jealous. Stacy initially thinks it's cute that Bobby is so protective until it gets to the point where he becomes overbearing and irrational. Even when he starts hitting her, she defends him to her friends telling them that you stick by the people you love. "Everything's fine" becomes her mantra even though those closest to her can plainly see that it's not the case.
This relationship closely mirrors the one in which Stacy's mother is involved. Her mother is too absorbed in her own dating situation to understand and acknowledge what's going on with Stacy. Stacy assumes the maternal role, in fact, berating her mother for allowing her boyfriend to treat her badly though she's willing to overlook Bobby's abusive nature. In fact, when her mother confronts her about the abuse, Stacy says "That's your story, not mine." That Stacy's mother backs off at this point is a disgrace and this film strives to point out that in any situation no one should let abuse slide.
This film came out in the early 1990's and was one of those Sunday Night movies aimed at letting teenagers know the ills that will befall them if they're not careful. It's stuck with me all these years because the message is delivered without a scolding undertone, but instead as a reminder of what can go horribly wrong if you let things spiral out of hand. Sally Jessy Raphael has a guest role as the judge in Bobby's trial and she reminds those present who witnessed Stacy's abuse that we have a responsibility to the people who we care about. It's a foolish and dangerous practice to simply shake off abuse with the adage "Love Hurts." It shouldn't.
a powerful made for TV drama.......2006-06-12
I've only seen this movie once on TV back when it first aired like 10 years ago. It was an intriguing drama that drew me in until the credits. It is very well done and the acting is top notch. It was refreshing to see Fred Savage and Candice Cameron in dramatic roles. After watching it I wanted to see it again. When I found out it was coming out on DVD I was really excited. If you haven't seen it I recommend you do if you like dramas. Don't let the made for TV fact scare you. It could have easily been in the theatre in the 80's even though it is not an 80's movies. I'm just saying it is top notch quality. If you can get your hands on a copy of this you won't be disappointed.

At the top of his game, Stephen King has a real gift for mining monsters--zero-at-the-bone horror--out of everyday faces and places. Adapted from a novella in the 1982 collection that also spawned <I>Stand by Me</I> and <I>The Shawshank Redemption</I>, <I>Apt Pupil</I> looks at first as if it might draw authentically enlightening terror from the soul-cancer that makes blood relations of a Southern California golden boy (Brad Renfro) and an aging Nazi war criminal (Sir Ian McKellen). Turned on by a high-school course about the Holocaust, Todd Bowden (such a bland handle for this top-of-his-class sociopath!) tracks down Kurt Dussander, a former Gestapo killer hiding in the shadows of sunny SoCal. Blackmailing the old man into sharing his firsthand stories of genocide, the teenager trips out on the virtual reality of the monster's memories. There's perverse play here on the way a kid hungry for knowledge can bring a long-retired teacher or grandparent back to life. Truly superb as James Whale in <I>Gods and Monsters</I>, McKellen brings subtlety to this Stephen King creepshow: his dessicated Dussander is like a mummy or vampire revivified by Todd's appetite for atrocity.
Considerable talent intersects in <I>Apt Pupil</I>: It's director Bryan Singer's first film since <I>The Usual Suspects</I>, that enormously popular, rather heartless thriller-machine. The outstanding cast also includes David Schwimmer as a Jewish guidance counselor pathetically impotent in the face of Todd's talent for evil, and Bruce Davison as Todd's All-American Dad, lacking the capacity to even imagine evil. And the story itself has the potential for gazing into the heart of darkness right here in Hometown, U.S.A. But <I>Apt Pupil</I> just turns ugly and unclean when it trivializes its subject, equating Holocaust horrors with slamming a cat into an oven or offing a nosy vagrant (Elias Koteas). Reducing the great spiritual abyss that lies at the center of the 20th century to cheap slasher-movie thrills and chills is reprehensible. Both Todd and the writers of <I>Apt Pupil</I> should have heeded the old saw: When supping with the devil, best use a long spoon. <I>--Kathleen Murphy</I>
Customer Reviews:
Love, hate relationship.......2007-04-23
I liked this movie for all of the chills and twists in it. The problem that I did have with it was not really feeling for any of the characters, but that was probably the way that King wrote the story. The younger man, Todd Bowden coming into an older gentleman's home and threatening him with "exposure". Then plot twists and the older gentleman, Kurt Dussander turning and threatening Todd with exposure of knowing he was a war criminal. What I did like is that they did come to the realization that they were both benefiting from each other's company in some way. This movie is a Stephan King classic and I did like it very much. I do recommend it to anyone that likes psychological thrillers.
Chilling and very believable. A King's Classic..........2007-04-20
Stephen King's modern Horror story comes to life and it chills your bones.
A student wanting to know more about the Nazi past of a retired old man, who hides under a false name and identity makes for an already very good story, but when it goes farther than this, and it stretches into blackmail and absolute psychological evil, that's when it becomes explosive.
Ian McKellen as the former Nazi Officer, is absolutely brilliant and adds a chilling reality to the role he plays.
His entire development and subsequent transformation from a weak old man into his former self throughout the movie, is to say the least a masterwork of acting.
He plays his role to the fullest and one could almost feel some kind of eery enjoyment in doing so. It is a devilish appearance and this confirms the multi-faceted talents of a Great Actor as McKellen rightfully is.
Brad Renfro, although playing his role with honesty, is far less threatening as one may wish, although he adds a component of freshness to his role, in which we can honestly believe.
Younger generations can, at times, be very cruel, but don't many times, fully understand or appreciate the risks and dangers connected with reopening old wounds in elder people.
It is a very interesting social case study, very well developed by director Bryan Singer, who is a very good storyteller and paces all his movies in such a way, as never becoming stale.
It is shocking to see that at times, fiction foretells reality.
But this is not just a thriller or a psychological horror movie, it is far more. It is a warning.
Let the past rest, learn from it, but do not conjure it up again, or you will pay the consequences...
A great lesson and truly well developed.
I can only recommend it, but be adviced, this is a most disturbing movie. It has no gore, no true blood in it, but it could grasp you by the throat if you are not more than watchful.
Careful for what you wish for, you may even get it...
APT Pupil.......2007-03-11
A good dark drama, 16 year-old student recogines an old man living in his home town to be a hunted Nazi. If you like Stephen King you'll like this chilling story of psychological terror.
AMAZING!!!!!.......2007-03-09
This was one of the best movies i have bought from being on amazon, i got it in record time. The condition was great and i love watching it.i idk what else to say but the movie is a great movie, and i recomend it to everyone who ask about it.
One of my all-time favorites.......2007-02-24
This movie does not deserve to be overlooked. The casting is excellent and the story chilling. A young boy who is experimenting with the evil within himself -- as many adolescents do, dabbling in cruelty and self-destruction with no intention of taking any final steps -- chooses as his victim a former Nazi officer who is an expert at cat-and-mouse games, and at cultivating evil... The boy's life is forever changed as a result. Not to be missed. Read the novella, too, from Different Seasons. Different endings, both very good.

Long before <I>Pleasantville</I>, this 1992 comedy featured a family taking its problems out of the real world and into the loopy fictions of television entertainment. John Ritter and Pam Dawber star as Roy and Helen Knable, a suburban couple with a host of marital problems, most of which have to do with Roy's couch-potato attachment to his TV's remote control. Things take a hellish turn when the devilish Spike (Jeffrey Jones) turns up at the Knable house offering Roy a great deal on the ultimate satellite-TV system.
Surprise, surprise: The contract signed by the less-than-cautious Roy actually requires a one-time payment of his soul. He and Helen find themselves sucked into their own television set, where they are kept on the run through such monstrous fare as "I Love Lucifer" and "Northern Overexposure." Eventually, their disenchanted kids (David Tom, Heather McComb) discover mom and dad are on TV, in a whole new sense of the term, and they set about rescuing them.
A genuine novelty, <I>Stay Tuned</I> is powered along by a chain of imaginative sequences, most memorably an original cartoon by Warner legend Chuck Jones that cleverly integrates Ritter and Dawber's characters. The script's implicit social satire about the overbearing nature of television on underachieving lives isn't lost on the lively cast or director Peter Hyams (<I>Timecop</I>), easily one of the most imaginative action filmmakers around. The old rivalry between television and movies carries on in this clever parody, and the feud has rarely been so much fun. With tons of supporting players, including SCTV legend Eugene Levy, <I>Saturday Night Live</I> announcer Don Pardo, and hip-hop performers Salt-n-Pepa. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

Murder, She Likes .......2005-10-28
Stay Tuned is about Roy and Helen Knable. Roy gets a new TV from Mr. Spike. The new TV has 666 channels that's filled with shows such as "Facts of Life Support" , "30 Something to Life", "Sadistic Hidden Videoes" , "Murder, She Likes" and commerical parodies. Roy and Helen has 24 hours to live through Hell's channels. Will they make it out alive? STAY TUNED!
A good family film.......2005-02-23
Whether you enjoy the experience of watching Peter Hyams's 1992 film "Stay Tuned" depends in large part whether you can stomach the antics of John Ritter. Personally, I always found Ritter enjoyable if a bit too "in your face." It's almost as though the late actor desperately needed you to like him, and he would do anything to get that attention. "Three's Company," that old show about three young people sharing an apartment in California while trying to move up in the world, obviously was the vehicle that propelled him into the stratosphere of beloved American television comedians. They even got Lucille Ball to host a greatest hits episode, which served as sort of an endorsement of Ritter's talents by the goddess of American sitcoms. Something unpleasant happened after "Three's Company" folded, however: Ritter couldn't seem to find meaningful work in Hollywood. His attempt to do a spin-off of "Three's Company" crashed on takeoff, and his movie career was mostly a disappointment unless you take into consideration the two "Child's Play" movies. Despite his cinematic problems, I've enjoyed several of Ritter's lesser entries. "Real Men" is one of them; "Stay Tuned" is another. The latter movie received heavy rotation on cable back in the early 1990s.
Ritter plays Roy Knable, the lazy patriarch of your typical American family who smothers his resentments underneath heavy doses of television. His lousy job as a plumbing supply salesman can't compare with the exciting career of his wife Helen (Pam Dawber). Roy hates that his wife is more successful than he is, so he routinely ignores her. Their two kids, Darryl (David Tom) and Diane (Heather McComb), generally stay out of the way. Darryl, who also does double duty as the film's narrator, spends most of his time up in his room figuring out new ways to torment his sister. Diane is moving through the adolescent airhead phase typified by boyfriends, social activities, and cheerleading. What Diane and Darryl Knable don't realize, along with their parents, is that the family's life is about to take a turn for the worse. When the television set implodes after yet another confrontation between Roy and Helen, a most unusual salesman turns up on the doorstep with an incredible offer: he's selling a new satellite television system with 666 channels of prime entertainment. The man proposing the deal is Spike (Jeffrey Jones), one of Satan's most important underlings who heads up a devilish program that tries to steal souls by sucking them into the world of television. Predictably, Roy and Helen Knable end up in this demented world battling for their very existence.
The television channels these two wander through resemble little the networks normal people watch. This is programming straight from the fiery pits, programming like "Duane's Underworld," a demonic wrestling program, "Northern Overexposure," a game show where losing carries a greater cost than mere money, "Driving Over Miss Daisy," "Thirty Something to Life," and dozens of other wacky programs based on real television shows but with the purpose of killing Roy and Helen in order to steal their souls. There's even a scene where Ritter finds himself in the role of Jack Tripper on a "Three's Company" spoof and another segment where Roy and Helen are stuck in a cartoon as mice battling a robotic cat. The two need to survive this nightmarish world for twenty-four hours whereupon Spike must return them to the land of the living. Problem is, very few people last that long. Not with Spike and his toady Crowley (Eugene Levy) working behind the scenes to seal their doom. Only with the help of Darryl, Diane, and a suddenly contrite Crowley will Roy and Helen return to their domicile. It won't be easy since Spike, facing the wrath of his boss, enters the system to personally bring about Roy's demise. Battling the forces of darkness has rarely been this much fun.
The thing that struck me after recently rewatching this film is how out of date it is. "Stay Tuned" by its very nature hasn't aged well. A film that spoofs television relies on the content available at the time for laughs, and nowhere is this truer than in this film. It's entirely possible there will be viewers watching this picture on DVD who have no idea what some of these spoofs mean. I clearly remember the Memorex commercial, for instance, but younger people won't. Fortunately, the movie is still great fun even if you don't catch all the references largely due to the efforts of John Ritter and Pam Dawber. Ritter does his usual shtick, namely breaking a few objects, falling down a couple of times, playing the moral and physical coward, and even engaging in a bit of swordplay with Spike. Dawber's role is low-key but critical as she plays the straight man to Ritter's antics. She still looks great, too. I'm less enchanted with the two kids, especially the grating Heather McComb. She's supposed to play a snotty pre-teen, however, so I guess she does her job well. "Stay Tuned" is, surprisingly, a fairly conservative film that endorses the idea that less television and more family time is a good thing. I can't see many viewers arguing with this thesis.
Trailers for "Big Bully," "Ace Ventura," "Chill Factor," and "Stay Tuned" are on the disc, as well as a short making of featurette and cast biographies. I'm happy to see "Stay Tuned" make the sometimes difficult transition from VHS to DVD even though I forgot all about the film for at least ten years. Hyams's picture is a rather obscure slice of early '90s nostalgia that is still amusing to watch all these years later. Fans of the late John Ritter will find this disc a must have for their collections.
For the television conisseur.......2004-09-16
Pam Dawber and the late John Ritter are Helen and Roy Knable who end up in a world of television. Helen is so fed up with Roy's addiction to television that she ends up leaving him. Their kids stay with Roy and the kids themselves join their parents in the world of television. Roy finds himself in drag,as an animated mouse and in a black-and-white detective drama. What's even cooler is that Roy is on the set of Three's Company,Ritter's legendary classic sitcom. Two unknown actresses as Janet and Chrissy, walk into the apartment and ask Roy in unison,"Where have you been?". Ritter actually reprised his role of Jack Tripper for a short time! There's also Duane's Underworld on Saturday Night Dead,a parody of Saturday Night Live's Wayne's World. Duane and his sidekick, both ghouls, have Roy on the show and rave about Helen's physical beauty("Schwing!"). The Knables' kids get their mom and dad out of TV and back into the real world. Dawber's sitcom Mork & Mindy,a spinoff of Happy Days, ran on ABC from 1978 to 1982,during the tenure of Three's Company, another ABC sitcom(1977-1984). I dedicate this film to the memory of Ritter(9/17/48-9/11/03).
666 channels is a "hell" of a lot.......2004-09-13
Roy Knable (John Ritter) "Real men "(1987), is a plumbing supplies salesman and he does not like his job. So he buries himself in TV. His wife Helen (Pam Dawber) thinks he is not a doer anymore and he is not fun. He just will not talk to her during double overtime.
Spike (Jeffery Jones), you may recognize him as the principal in "Farris Bueller's Day Off" (1986), recognizes a soul snatching opportunity when he sees one. He offers Roy 666 channels that are not seen on regular TV. The creators of this movie were real creative with the channel selection.
Surprise Roy & Helen are drawn into TV land where they are destined to wander from channel to channel until they learn a little about themselves and each other. Spike is sort of hoping to bump them off in one of several ways before 24 hours is up.
Will Spike have his way?
Will Roy realize the error of his ways?
Will Helen get blown up and ran over?
Stay tuned.

You'd think moviemakers would have run out of new ways of capturing the trials and joys of young love--but director David Gordon Green finds a fresh take in <I>All the Real Girls</I>, a bittersweet small-town romance. By leaving out the usual humdrum exposition of a courtship story, Green cuts right to the little moments that form the high and low points of a budding relationship. It's an impressionistic style aided by the wonderfully spontaneous and unpredictable acting of Paul Schneider (who also co-scripted) and Zooey Deschanel--who look like they're improvising, even though they're not. As in Green's excellent debut feature <I>George Washington</I>, a small town serves as an atmospheric backdrop--this place looks a couple of decades shy of the 21st century. The mosaic approach makes the film play like a collection of memories, someone's first love recalled with fondness and just a bit of regret. <I>--Robert Horton</I>

alright...........2007-05-13
Intresting movie but it kinda gets slow in parts. Shipping wise it came fast and in perfect condition.
Refreshingly simple and ethereal.......2006-11-30
All the Real Girls is a refreshingly simple story about first love with a fittingly ethereal approach to its subject. The film is about the relationship between Southern small-town Romeo Paul (Paul Schneider) and inexperienced Noel (Zooey Deschanel). An indiscretion mars their romance and some soul searching by Paul follows.
There is much to like about Schneider and Deschanel's performances, which are poignant, sad, and naked. It is especially nice to see Deschanel in a larger, more grounded role than her usual quirky supporting roles. Director David Gordon Green drops you right in the middle of Paul and Noel's courtship but reveals his characters slowly. The seemingly improvised dialogue and long cuts brings to mind Richard Linklater's Before Sunrise, but less witty and talky, more emotionally raw. Some will be turned off by the film's meandering narrative structure and visual style, which has been called impressionistic (it feels more crafted than that). Indeed, Green tries hard to be unconventional and poetic, at times coming across as esoteric. But it will be thoroughly absorbing to those who want a more evocative kind of film; plus it feels pretty darn close to first love.
Some films should just be pitched over a cliff.......2006-02-26
This movie is a long, slow, earnest melodrama about small town twenty-somethings struggling to...you know...find themselves...get somewhere...grow up...ah, hell, I have no idea, really. The movie is shot so that we are stuck in that eternal autumn that permeates most small-town melodramas. All oranges, browns, and golds. The characters meander through their lives with little direction and no visible means of support. There's a factory which none of the characters seems to work in. Zooey Deschanel plays a very confused girl who is a virgin when she starts dating Paul Schneider. Schneider is a player (that's right, all of a sudden there are at least two babes in this town that we see Schneider has, erm...pleasured. They wear professional makeup and have their hair done in New York. Or at least that is what it looks like.) He falls for Deschanel and doesn't screw her because he's a changed guy. It's his new self. So what does Deschanel's character do? She does a bad thing at a weekend party at a lake. The whole rest of the film is devoted to the pain and inchoate ramblings of Schneider and the rest of the cast, all of whose lives seem to be hopeless and in need of repeated doses of stiff, tough-sounding and superficial philosophies which, it appears, everyone can spout. Nothing like dead-end stultifying, small-town life to make a person into a wise man. The worst are the virtually tongue-tied ramblings of Deschanel. While there are moments of dimmed insight in this movie, for the most part it is self-indulgent and plodding, filled with little meaningless scenes that give it an art-house feel. Deschanel is fine as the wounded/wounding girl, Schneider is stiff, pasty, and dull as the boyfriend (he also wrote the story). He looks way too old for Deschanel which, apparently, he is.
Sometimes Love Hurts.......2006-02-11
A Beautifully love storie in real real terms with the proper ammount of infatuation, love, pain and love after the pain, really touching "real girls" in this film is more than just an adjective or a tittle for this picture and Zooey Deschannel is the owner of the kind of personality that fits in such description with a natural charisma, some sort of intellectual charm and a beauty just a few girls have, dont miss this one if you like independent films.

Reviewers're missing one crucial thing.......2006-01-24
I won't bog down w/ specifics, as past reviewers have already shared their comments. But as someone below said: in a lot of cases it's a "love it or hate it" film. That aside, I was taken by the beauty of the picture sequences, along with the actors' ability to convey their emotions.
But perhaps the most important thing a lot of folks are neglecting is the soundtrack! It's excellent, featuring a host of discreet bands. Pyramid, Mogwai, and , and Sparklehorse, to name a few.
Do yourself a favor and at least check it out.

better than the original.......2006-08-19
Kickboxer 2 followed up the first successful Kickboxer, but minus Van Damme. David Sloan (played by Sasha Mitchell) is now the focus, the apparent 3rd brother of Kurt and Eric Sloan from the 1st movie. Sasha Mitchell may not be anywhere as close to Van Damme in the athletic department, but that doesn't hurt Kickboxer 2 at all. Sasha Mitchell is a better actor and as a whole, Kickboxer 2 does a better job than the 1st movie in that department. The story is pretty decent too - this time both characters (good and evil) are out for revenge. The evil is Tong Po, who returns from the 1st Kickboxer, played by Michel Qissi. He only has one line in the movie and doesn't appear until much later on, but it is a grand appearance. Matthias Hues (Death Match, Blackbelt, No Retreat No Surrender 2) also has a role in the movie, fighting David early on in the ring, the 1st of 3 fights in the movie. Vince Murdocco (Ring of Fire, To Be The Best) is also one of the main characters, who fights Tong Po, the 2nd fight in the movie. This match is all in slow-motion, but it is the only slow motion fight I have ever enjoyed, creating a sense of suspense that supports a main element in the story. The final fight of course is between David and Tong Po, which is about 5-1/2 minutes in length. It is mostly slow-motion once again, but is still quite entertaining and bloody, with broken glass glued and taped to the fists (same used in the 1st Kickboxer).
Kickboxer 1 is definetly a Van Damme classic. Kickboxer 2 began a different path, but in no way did it succeed in being a bad martial-arts film. I highly recommend this if you want to see some good fights backed by a decent story.
KICKBOXER 2 is a Hit!!.......2006-04-05
KICKBOXER 2 has great fighting and action, with a good story. This continues with Sasha Mitchell (Step By Step), as Jean Claude Van Damme's younger brother. Instead of returning, Van Damme went to make the movie 'Double Impact.' Peter Boyle (Everybody Loves Raymond) and Dennis Chan (Kickboxer) are great additions to THE ROAD BACK. The KICKBOXER stories are really raw for the action movies of that time period. Sasha Mitchell probably does his best performance of his career. After enjoying this, continue with KICKBOXER 3 & 4!
ranks up with the first one.......2005-06-26
Its hard to believe that some people gave this movie a negative review just because it didn't have Jean Claude Van Damme in it. Sasha Mitchell does a good job in this one. He plays David Sloan, the younger brother of Jean Claude's character who we learn was murdered by former champion Tong Po at the end of the first Kickboxer. The trainer (I don't know his name) from the first Kickboxer comes to help David prepare for his fight with Tong Po. Yes, like the first movie Kicboxer 2 is about avenging the death of a brother and like the first it delivers good martial arts action along with the return of Tong Po. As with the first movie, the Kickboxer 2 dvd has no features and is not widescreen.
They shouldn't have bothered without Van Damme..........2004-09-06
Alot of people think this is better than the original Kickboxer, however, I really don't think so. First of all, I think they probably shouldn't have bothered making a sequel at all without Van Damme. I'm not really sure the exact reason why Van Damme didn't do a sequel, I'm guessing he either wanted too much money to do one, or he just wasn't interested in doing one at all. (Generally, Van Damme was just never really big on sequels.) Perhaps it was a combination of both reasons, who really knows for sure. Either way, I don't think they should have bothered.
It's not that Sasha Mitchell(aka, Cody, the goofy kid from Step by Step) is bad in the lead role...in fact, he was very convincing, given his real-life Kickboxing experience...he just doesn't have the same style or coordination as Van Damme. On top of all that, the thing I find most irritating of all is that the writers felt the need to write in some really bad dialogue to explain what happened to Kurt and Eric Sloane from the previous movie. I was never a huge fan of the whole "everybody from the past movie are all dead" thing. By the time they got to Kickboxer 5, it was starting to get really ridiculous with this.
The rest of the cast is a mix...Peter Boyle gave a decent performance, and Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa always gives a top notch performance in anything he is in. Hell, even Matthias Hughes(who plays villains in a variety of B-action movies) gave a decent performance, but some of the other supporting actors left alot to be desired. Whoever the guy was that played McKaia(or is it McKaya?), I forget the name, gave a pretty lousy performance, as did Vince Murdocco(Brian). As for the Tong Po in this version(credited as "Michel Qissi"), I'm not sure whether or not it is the same Tong Po from the first movie, I don't think he is, as he looks a bit different, but he just seemed really weird in this version.
If they were intent on making a sequel without Van Damme, then they could have at least tried. The movie started out with a goo plot, and solid foundation, however, after the first fight with David and Neil Vargas, the plot starts to jump all over the place. Tong Po and Sanga are introduced into the movie very late, even though they are the entire focus of the story towards the end. On top of less-than-stellar writing and story development, the fight scenes in this one were terrible. The last two fights in the movie were shown ENTIRELY in slow motion. By the end of the last fight between David and Tong Po, I felt like I was going to get vertigo if I watched it any longer. They were really stretching some things, too. I find it hard to believe that the fight would have gone on that long after Tong Po knocked the referee out. Is it a WWE wrestling match or what? Also, what makes even less sense is that David is escorted out of the building by about seven security guards, and then a few moments later he is magically back at ringside just in time to see Brian killed.
As for the soundtrack, this movie had a couple decent songs; "My Brother's Eyes," "A Man Alone," "It's All up to You," however, once again the movie falls short in comparison to the first Kickboxer in this aspect. For those who did enjoy the soundtrack, good luck finding those tracks, as since a Kickboxer 2 soundtrack was never commercially released, those tracks are virtually impossible to get.
Even though I don't necessarily think this movie was great, I think it was at least better than some of the other Kickboxer sequels. It wasn't as bad as the third one(which was probably the worst of the series), and it couldn't possibly be as bad as Kickboxer 4, with plastic-face Tong Po and a plot that made virtually no sense. As for Kickboxer 5(which was ironically a half-remake of Kickboxer 2), it was actually decent, given the talents of Mark Dacascos, and better writers.
All in all I think this was a poor sequel and they shouldn't have bothered.
Orignal is better!.......2003-12-24
this movie is ok but it doesnt top the orignal, jean claude van damme is the best actor and he destroys Sasha Mitchell. Sasha Mitchell doesnt come close to the kind of actor jean claude van damme is. I say get the first one, its so much better.

This 1993 sequel to the St. Bernard hit finds big, fluffy Beethoven now at home with gruff-but-lovable dad Charles Grodin, supermom Bonnie Hunt, and their three kids. The story continues with Beethoven falling for a female St. Bernard and having a litter, unbeknownst to Grodin, while the new dog's owner (Debi Mazar) starts angling for benefits from this union. The larger dog pool certainly adds more cuteness and laughs to this follow-up, and Grodin and Hunt--consummate professionals--don't let sequel-itis lower their energy or their wonderfully idiosyncratic way with dialogue. Mazar brings her own edge to the proceedings, too, but in the end, the film's accent is still very much on a feel-good experience for everyone. --Tom Keogh

Good for the little ones.......2006-07-18
The movie is corny, implausible and poorly acted, but the puppies are incredibly cute! Little kids will love this movie if just for the puppies. If you have young children you want to keep entertained, Beethovens' 2nd will hold their attention. Afterwards, your kids will probably start bugging you to get them a puppy.
The continuing adventures of Beethoven.......2005-03-12
Now that the lovable St. Bernard Beethoven is enjoying life with his new masters, the Newtons,he begins to start a family of his own, biologically. Beethoven impregnates a female St. Bernard named Missy and the canine couple sire four puppies. One of is named Tchaikovsky, after another late classical music great. First,George Newton(Charles Grodin) objects to Beethoven in the Newtons' home, then objects to the mutt's offsprings. The Newton family agreed to find homes for the puppies after they've grown. George's wife Alice(Bonnie Hunt) is now working with her husband at his air freshener factory. One memorable scene is where the Newtons take a vacation up in the mountains, with Beethoven in tow,of course. Missy belongs to a mean-spirited young woman named Regina(Debi Mazar) who is going through a divorce. After the divorce is final,Regina's now-ex-husband is granted sole custody of Missy. The ex-hubby and Missy visit the Newtons in the last scene. This film would one of Grodin's last. Subsequently,he co-starred with Martin Short in CLIFFORD. Grodin's previous films include SEEMS LIKE OLD TIMES,IT'S MY TURN,MIDNIGHT RUN and TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS.
BEETHOVEN HAS FOUND A GIRLFRIEND!.......2004-03-15
i watched Beethovens 1st 2nd and 3rd and i got to say this is the best one ever. This movie is about beethoven finding a mate, but the girl (missy) gets taken away by an evil dog napper. Beethoven saves her and she had puppies, but the dog napper soon takes missy away again, now its up to the newton to save the puppies from being drowned, our worse.
I liked this movie because i like dogs and adventures, the puppies are so cute and i cant believe anyone would like to drown them,
before i go i would like to recommend this movie to anyone who likes animals, even if your not a big animals fan you still gotta see this movie

Beethoven's own family.......2003-06-25
So far this is best Beethoven movie ever out of the other Beethoven movies. Beethoven gets a girlfriend and has puppies. But Missy(Beethoven's girlfriend) is owned by a evil women who hates dogs. She just wants Missy for money because she is a pure blood. Beethoven is split from his love throughout the whole movie. I felt sorry for beethoven. But the puppies are okay with Beethoven's owners for a while. Charles Grodin was funny than ever. I enjoyed every minute of this movie. It is funny and heartwarming like the original. I wish I had this movie.

Bryan Singer's follow-up to his postmodern caper-thriller <I>The Usual Suspects</I> trades in the flamboyant narrative flourish of that film for a moody meditation on the allure of evil. Based on the Stephen King novella (featured in the collection <I>Different Seasons</I>), <I>Apt Pupil</I> follows the disturbing spiral of a bright young schoolboy, Todd (Brad Renfro), who discovers a wanted Nazi war criminal is living in his town and then blackmails him into telling stories ("everything they're afraid to show us in school") of the horrors of the Holocaust. The old man, Dussander (a terrifying performance by Ian McKellen), comes alive while telling his tales and is soon reliving his past glories in a SS Halloween ordered by Todd. It's not long before Dussander's homicidal streak is unleashed and he is pulling Todd along with him. Although set against a backdrop of Holocaust history, the issues raised in the stories are ignored in favor of shocks and suspense, and the film ultimately sacrifices the opportunity to be a fascinating psychological thriller about the seductive power of evil for a trip into Stephen King territory. Despite such limitations, Singer delivers a stylish and sometimes unsettling horror picture, which is largely due to McKellen's chilling portrait of a slumbering sadist awakened. <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>
