Great Fun, Especially for Scouting Families.......2007-05-14
As a Cub Scout Den Leader who is going on my fourth year, I had a blast watching this movie! Although I was worried at first it might be second-rate and cheesy, it's really fun, enjoyable, and has tons of laugh-out-loud moments for parents and kids alike. My son, who is a Webelo Scout this year, though it was awesome, especially as we just had our own Pinewood Derby race last week! This is a great comedic film for the whole family, and although those in the Scouting world might get some of the subtleties quicker than those who aren't, all families will be able to find something enjoyable in this film.
Everything's Bigger at Jimmy's!.......2006-08-12
I have to admit that I wasn't expecting much from this film, but it really won me over. The characters might have been a little over-stated, but all in all an all too real look into the goings-on behind the scenes of what is supposed to be a Kid's Activity. I looked at some of the cars that were raced in the finals and it reminded me of some of the cars I saw at my own Pine Wood Derby as a kid and I know now, as I and the Scout Leaders did then, that the kid never lifted a finger in the construction process. But, oh well, que so-what, so-what. I still enjoyed this little film emensely, although I wish that Pat Morita had been in it more, he's one of my favorite character actors, and losing him last year was a real loss to entertainment as a whole. And the films exterior scenes were all filmed in my home town of St. George, Utah, so of coarse I'm going to like it for that reason alone, but the rest of the film is more than worth while too. Recommended!
Funny movie.......2006-03-10
A must see for boy scouts and their fathers. Very funny for the whole family.
Essentially an extended sitcom.......2006-03-09
Since I'm familiar with the Boy Scout subculture of adult volunteers being more enthusiastic than their own boys in scouting, I found many of the jokes right on target. It is a strange subculture too for anyone who is not a part of it or is new to scouting.
While it played on only three screens in metro Atlanta during its run, and didn't even gross a million dollars nationally, I knew it was a direct-to-DVD type of film and didn't expect it to amount to much. However, I found the film to be much funnier than expected. It is essentially a situational comedy that you find in 30 minute installments on network television, but in a movie length 90 minutes. The actors and plot are sitcom-esque, which isn't bad and actually quite entertaining. I laughed more than I expected to and the story went in a direction I didn't expect.
Basically, the plot is that one man feels inadequate ever since childhood when a newcomer displaced him from winning all childhood contests. The competition continues into adulthood when inexplicably, the three friends and the interloper all live on the same cul-de-sac. When their sons receive pinewood derby kits, the dads all have plans of their own to win once and for all. Comedic farce ensues. If you can stand sitcom-type humor, this movie will delightfully entertain you and it is the kind of film parents can watch with their children without embarrassing profanity or sex scenes. The only misadvertisement I saw in this film is that Pat "Miyagi" Morita is given a bigger billing than his cameo role. That's a shame. He should have had a bigger part for his final film.
Anyone who has ever competed in the pinewood derby as a cub scout will probably enjoy this film as a nostalgic and funny tribute to the male competitive gene. I remember my own experience in how serious other boys took this race. For me, it was just fun to design my own car and see how it raced...but for others, winning is the only thing. This movie resolves itself in a very good way, making this film much better than I expected it to be.
First Place Family Fun!.......2006-03-08
Fun for the whole family, especially if there's a scouter on board! I thought it was going to be cheesy/second rate...but it's not! This is a quality built movie with a great cast and could easily have been a theater hit. All kids will enjoy this, not just for scouters! Zoom this baby right in to your cart, it's worth it! (We obtained a copy from the district for "Movie Night" with our cubs and it was a huge hit!)

You Can't Judge A Book By Its Cover.......2006-06-05
Obviously, the same goes for this DVD and the aliens contained within it. Nana Visitor, Alison Eastwood, Bruce Boxleitner, and Hunter Tylo head-up a cast of newbies who make a go of this dismal alien farce. Based on the DVD cover, you'd think that this flick was full of gory alien action and plenty of blood and guts. Unfortunately, the menacing alien on the DVD case only makes a couple of brief and uneventful appearances. Instead, we're left to figure out why aliens are preparing for a big celebration by doing the deeds of "Uncle Bob," who seems to be the top alien until the leader is reborn via Visitor and Boxleitner's son. Of course, he ain't havin' none of that, so he teams up with Eastwood, his drop-out bud and the girl he's always longed for in an attempt to stop the alien party and save the world.
This flick is boring. It drags along at a snail's pace, keeps the viewer nice and confused as to why things are happening, and eventually ends with the promise for a potential sequel or a TV series.
The cast comes off as really fake, especially Visitor and Boxleitner, who are so full of wholesome goodness that it makes you want to throw up. Corbin Bernsen reprises his sleazeball "L.A. Law" persona but instead of fighting for justice, he keeps the aliens' skins intact as a doctor.
The effects are okay, but then again, there weren't many effects necessary for this flick since only one alien appears to have not been a guy in a suit.
In closing, I don't recommend this flick to anyone unless they've got a fixation with Scarecrow or Clint Eastwood's offspring. Keep clear of this snoozer.
THANKS FOR THE WARNING.......2005-10-04
THEY ARE AMONG US is a somewhat flaccid rehashing of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, with an obvious made for television veneer. A small town is plagued by what appears to be aliens inhabiting human bodies, but the script is plagued with an unfocused narrative and confusing red herrings. Alison Eastwood gamely plays an alien hunter, but we're never really sure where she's coming from or how she came to know about the aliens. A seemingly perfect family of father, mother and son are at the heart of the upcoming "event" which seems to be taking place on the son's 18th birthday. Good luck in guessing what this "event" is. Although the movie has decent effects, it is far from reaching the status of BODY SNATCHERS and ultimately ends up looking like a failed tv pilot.
They Are Among Us, keep ignoring them........2005-09-13
This is obviously a straight to DVD release, or better yet it's fresh from the Sci FI Channels annals. All the old gang was here from Sci Fi high Nana Visitor, Bruce Boxleitner, Corbin Bernsen, Hunter Tylo; you know all the big names. The whole story is about this community, who early on you figure out they aren't normal, and there are creatures assumingly from outer space. The creatures are big headed, big teethed, and not really scary though I am not sure they were supposed to be. We have a teenager, Daniel, who is going to be turning 18 and something big, is going to happen at his birthday "celebration", and I guessed it wasn't going to be a new car with all the ominous music and hints. His parents, one of which is an alien his mother, the other of which is Laura Ingalls husband , try to protect him by sending him to Australia, the aliens don't swim I suppose or like Outback steakhouse. We have an outlaw alien bounty hunter in a Winnebago, Allison Eastwood (poor thing just couldn't ride on her fathers coattails like the rest of the Hollywood spawn), she is out to revenge her missing father with vials of collagen and bad one liners. The whole town is on a mission to convert our Daniel into whatever alien teenagers turn into, Hunter Tylo clumps around the entire movie with giant lips (I thought they ate collagen not injected it) and epileptic seizures when she is hungry. The ending is predictable and the aliens are supposed to be reminiscent of old 50's creature features but end up really looking and acting like my middle schools production of Journey to the center of the earth. I forced myself to finish watching it. So I would say skip it, watch children of the damned instead.
They Are Among Us--a good scary sci-fi movie!.......2005-07-19
At the beginning of this movie, the music, the rain, and the graphics all set the mood perfectly. You know that you are in for a scary hour and a half. The premise of the story is good and made me wonder, "what if these things could actually happen?" I thought the actors/actresses played their roles well and were all believeable in their parts. On the technical side of it, the editing was very effective, especially toward the end of the movie with the numerous flashbacks. The director also did an admirable job and the ending left me thinking there might be a sequel in the works. I would highly recommend They Are Among Us to everyone who is a sci-fi fan and also to all who just occasionally like a good scary movie.

Better than it should be.......2004-04-13
The Initiation should be a horrible movie, but for some reason it isn't. The whole is better than the parts. We have all the stereotypes, we have college kids, angst-ridden wealthy kids, recurring nightmares, and big fat flopping red herrings. There's also some pretty borderline acting, even from people you have actually heard of.
So why four stars? The movie just works for some reason. Somehow the blantant red herrings, in-your-face clues, etc still leave you surprised when the "shocking" twist ending is revealed. Or, maybe I am just an idiot... but all the people I have watched it with never saw it coming either.
Half of the movie takes place in a huuuuuge mall at night. The mall provides endless hiding spaces for the killer (or killers?) to wait and pounce from. The gore effects are really top notch. The attacks come quickly and viciously and look quite real. Even though the mall is huge, there is a claustrophobic feel since the principle characters are locked in without a real way of getting away from their attacker.
Veteran actors Clu Gulager and Vera Miles add some weight to the light, early career performances of Daphne Zuniga (Spaceballs, The Sure Thing, Melrose Place), Hunter Tylo (The Bold and the Beautiful), and brief talkshow host Marilyn Kagan.
The DVD I bought was the Initiation-only version whose only feature was a theatrical trailer. There is now a double-feature DVD that contains The Initiation AND The Mountaintop Motel Massacre. I haven't seen that movie, but you might as well buy it instead and get an extra movie out of the deal. You certainly won't be sacrificing any special features. But, again, this movie is good. There are lots of things to pick it apart over, but as a whole, it delivers.
Disappointing Flick Overall.......2003-07-05
The Initiation is very slow and dreadful movie. The first 40 minutes are wasted with flashbacks and talking but the end in the shopping mall is decently done. The ending plot twist was a nice surpise but other than that this movie is strictly rental material.
Initiation.......2003-06-10
1980's teen-slasher flick that is pretty ordinary fare. The only novelty values in this film are a young pre-fame Daphne Zuniga (Melrose Place) and a young pre-fame Hunter Tylo (The Bold and the Beautiful). While the film is probabaly a forgotten past on the ladder up for both ladies it is Hunter Tylo who now campaigns for christian values who desperately tries to forget the film more.Hunter has the all-important vital role of - The pretty girl who takes off all her clothes in front of the cameraman takes a shower in front of him and then gets out and dries herself in front of him just in case the eager teen male moviegoer missed her completely nude body the first times around - .Oh the joy of hollywood!!
cheesey.......2003-04-01
I got this because I'm a big fan of Hunter Tylo and Daphne Zuniga. Hunter Tylo looks completely different (did she have surgery?) so it's fun and camp to see her here. If you like B grade stuff, this is for you!
Dull beginning, pretty entertaining second half........2002-09-10
The Initiation is another one of those sorority-type slasher films where a group of girls are offed one-by-one by a deranged killer. The catch in this one is that it's set in a huge department store. Fun times? You bet, well, at least once they get into that store. Before that, this one's a snoozer.
The opening does set up an intriguing premise, with Daphne Zuniga constantly having a dream in which she's a young child watching her father fighting another man. After that, the film bogs down quite a bit with repetitive hypnosis scenes, and at least one of the twists involving her dreams is entirely predictable, so for the first half, the film hasn't done much at all.
But then, cut to the second half, once the girls break into the department store, and are knocked off one-by-one by the killer, and the film suddenly turns from sluggish to suspenseful. The kill scenes are built up quite well with plenty of blood, there are a few good jump-in-your-seat shocks, and it's nice to see I couldn't quite guess who would die in what order. The huge mall works extremely well in the movie's favor, making for a fairly complex setting in which the killer could be hiding anywhere.
There are even two scenes of gratuitous nudity, provided by none other than goregous soap star Hunter Tylo (credited here as Deborah Morehart), who happens to look even hotter now then she did 18 years ago! Unfortunately, the film stars Daphne Zuniga, who makes for a very flat heroine. I've heard many describe her as a talented actress, but I just don't see it. The rest of the performances are pretty standard, not even Vera Miles or Clu Gulager stand out.
The big plot twist at the end is pretty ludicrous, but I happen to like absurd twists in slashers (to an extent and depending on the situation), and at least it ties in believably with the opening. Had the rest of the film been as entertaining as the last thirty-five or so minutes, The Initiation would have been one truly nifty little slasher. As it is, the film is simply middling.

Customer Reviews:
Chum.......2007-05-13
I apologize to Michael Oblowitz. I once wrote a review for the Steven Seagal flick "The Foreigner" in which I blasted this director. If I remember correctly, I think I called him a hack who would never work in Hollywood again. Obviously, I was wrong. Not only did Oblowitz lens another Seagal film, "Out for a Kill," he moved on to make this movie, the jaw droppingly horrific, 2005 made for television clunker "Hammerhead". I didn't know my man Oblowitz directed this sucker when I initially stumbled over the premise on the Internet a ways back. All I saw was a description that said a half man, half shark creation made by an evil scientist wreaks havoc on a bunch of hapless fools. Moreover, "Hammerhead" got the green light from the friendly folks over at the Sci Fi Channel. I knew I was shark bait after reading that description. A human/shark hybrid? The Sci Fi Channel? I'm there with bells on! Sure enough, I found myself out hunting for a copy shortly thereafter. My elation grew as I looked at the cast list. The presence of the venerable William Forsythe and the even more venerable Jeffrey Combs heightened my excitement. Here's a cheese classic for the ages, I thought.
I was wrong. Oh, it's cheesy all right, but "Hammerhead" will hardly stand the test of time that every classic must go through. Read on to find out why. The mad scientist Dr. Preston King (Combs) invites a bunch of corporate types to his research facility on an uncharted island. The members of this group include Amelia Lockhart (Hunter Tylo), her beau Tom Reed (Forsythe), Whitney Feder (Arthur Roberts), and a bunch of other folks I refer to as walking chum. Anyway, they go to the island in order to discover what King has been spending all the company's money on for the last few years. The answer becomes readily apparent as the completely insane Preston introduces us to his newest creation. Enter Hammerhead man, a human/shark hybrid that King hopes to make the dominant species on earth. Uh huh. In the meantime, he announces that his visiting dignitaries must now die at the hands of his creation. Maybe he's trying to get rid of witnesses or something. Of course, most of our heroes escape the assassination attempt. Now they must run around the island trying to avoid shark boy and King's mercenary army (!). Lots of bloody carnage ensues, along with a fair amount of unintentional hilarity.
As the story progresses, we learn the movie has a few nasty little secrets. One, shark boy is actually King's terminally ill son. The good doctor saved his child from the ravages of cancer only to turn him into this monstrosity. Two, Amelia Lockhart once had a relationship with Preston's son. Three, and most importantly, King hopes that his ugly little monster will breed with a human woman so that the subsequent offspring will go forth and conquer the world. Don't look at me; I didn't write the script. Anyway, after endless running around and a few deaths (along with a few cheesy encounters with Mr. Hammerhead man, revealed in confusing, quick cut editing fashion in order to hide the zipper) the movie grinds into its inevitable final part. Oddly, the picture turns from a fairly mundane and ridiculous beastie flick into a kill 'em all actioner as the surviving characters open up a can of whupass on King's mercenary force. It's nice to know corporate executives know how to use assault weapons. They must have sandwiched in that training between operating a copier and forwarding e-mail using Outlook Express. Do I really need to go on? Not really, but I will anyway.
"Hammerhead" would have tanked at the box office had the film actually received a theatrical run. It's likely it would have tanked on DVD if idiots like myself hadn't run right out to rent a copy. How could it have succeeded? Nearly every element of the film misfires in horrific ways. Especially egregious are the lame special effects used to realize Hammerhead Man. I've seen more believable effects in a grade school play than I did in this movie. The beastie looks terribly unconvincing, and even more so when the quick cut editing techniques come into play. In an effort to hide the creature's glaring flaws, the camera tricks actually draw the viewer's attention to just how ridiculous this thing looks. Sigh. Another problem involved the direction. Take a close look at the Rambo style action scenes at the end of the flick. Was it just me or did the choreography look really bad? It's hard to follow what's happening. Oh well. The movie isn't without a few positives, mainly Jeffrey Combs on autocamp as the lunatic Dr. King and William Forsythe as a keister-kicking executive. Hunter Tylo's bod adds much needed eye candy to the proceedings. These positives are NOT enough to overcome the film's inherent flaws, however.
It is my sad duty to report to you that the DVD version of "Hammerhead" comes with zero in the way of extras. Yes sir, we're dealing with a barebones disc here. I'm actually not surprised that we don't get a commentary track, cast and crew interviews, or behind the scenes footage. Why would anyone working on or starring in this movie want to promote his or her efforts? It's not like they'll win an award for a movie named "Hammerhead". Moreover, it helps to keep a low profile when making a picture like this one if an actor or actress wishes to work in Hollywood again. On a final note: when did Hunter Tylo start looking like a clone of Janine Turner? I'd throttle back on the plastic surgery if I were you, lady. I like your body, but you're a few botox injections away from being cast in the sequel as the beastie!
Absolute Garbage.......2006-06-21
I can't believe this stinker even made it to the Dollar Rental rack at my local grocery store. What a worthless piece of junk. I feel cheated paying a buck to rent it. Shame on the actors that demeaned themselves in the making of such a dog.
Bad concept, worse execution. .......2006-03-13
Hammerhead is a movie about a half-man half-shark. Just click "x."
Still with me? Good. In Hammerhead, and evil doctor whose name I forgot invites a bunch of random people to his evil laboratory. (I'll refer to him as "Dr. Alberfesto" from this point, since that's probably his name anyway.) Maybe they got golden tickets, or perhaps Dr. Alberfesto sent a blood-stained invitation via red-eyed skeleton vulture, I can't really remember. Dr. Alberfesto invited these people to show them a scientific breakthrough of his. That being, he genetically combined his son who had cancer with a shark, as to cure him of his illness. (Makes perfect sense.) "You're mad!" one of the random main characters gasped. Dr. Alberfesto, feeling that his sanity was possibly in question, excused himself from the room. ...And activated a button that released the tank containing his mutant son. Dr. Alberfesto, like all great villains, rested comfortably with the knowledge his visitors were dead.
However, in an astute display of competence, one of Dr. Alberfeso's guards dropped an assault rifle in the room before leaving, for no apparent reason. The shark monster was unleashed, sometimes appearing in its rubber glory for a full nanosecond before the ADD-afflicted cameraman veered into some brick wall. Apparently this movie takes place in an alternate dimension where gunpowder works when it gets wet, because one of the random main characters dived under, grabbed the rifle, and fired off a few shots. After this clumsy exchange, out heroes noticed a convenient ladder leading out of the room. In a shocking twist, Dr. Alberfesto was in fact watching this on his evil-cam with his fingers connected, perhaps twirling his mustache. He revealed in one of the most asinine plot devices ever, that his shark-son hunting the main characters would awaken a more docile and human psyche in him for some reason.
The next few scenes were feral and visceral observations of human desperation, prodding your innermost fears with lines like: "These shoes are ruined." The next hour or so shows our heroes vacantly wandering around in a forest, sometimes getting eaten by the mutant shark or getting poison ivy, and sometimes engaging in firefights choreographed by Malaysian slaves. At the end of the movie, all but two characters are dead. They are captured and taken back to Dr. Alberfesto's invariably evil laboratory.
Our female lead woke up upside-down on a contraption that lowered into a tank of water containing the mutant shark. The evil scientist explained that he planned on his mutant shark son mating with her. Maybe this isn't painfully stupid, and the director was trying to satisfy an underplayed fetish of some sort. Anyway... I'm not complaining about a lack of gratuitous nudity, but apparently sharks now know how to remove articles of clothing. Sharks are vicious, but I can't imagine even them easily impregnating someone through a pair of panties. The other main character totally unexpectedly charged in Rambo-style, spraying the mutant shark with liquid nitrogen until he exploded. Somehow. Some other stuff happens and fin.
Explaining this movie was like watching it twice, which may require therapy. It wasn't offensively stupid on all levels, which is why it sucked so immensely. It was like the director wasn't expecting Hammerhead to be bad, so he made sure it took itself seriously; crafting one of the most dull, corny, and unintentionally pretentious insomnia-remedies in quite some time.
- Thus says the Pellington
HAMMER HEAD no bite, but stupidly fun.......2006-02-09
first of all, there is only one reason to see this movie--JEFFREY COMBS. I bought this crap(and I knew it) at my local BLOCKBUSTER. special effects: POOR, acting: (what acting?), more like overacting and that can be fun to watch too--overall, POOR, plot: revenge, eating humans, and so many plot holes I lost count. now, the good points: HUNTER TYLO, while not naked you do see her hanging upside down in a bra(worth it)--JEFFREY COMBS, his mad scientist roles are never bad to watch---NOW HE IS A GREAT ACTOR(love ya jeffrey--too cool, too funny). this is great movie if you are burned out on intellectual garbage and your brain needs a rest. put your popcorn in and sit down. it was bad but it was great. 1-star, but fun
Project Sharkman.......2006-01-29
One reviewer claimed this was a typical sharkman movie. I don't think there have been enough sharkman movies to define a typical, but it does fit the mad scientist mode that was so popular for so long.
Jeffrey Combs is a disgruntled scientist with an axe to grind. He has retreated to an island where he has set up a small empire complete with army (funny how discredited scientist always seem to have huge fortunes). There he has crossed a man with a hammerhead shark and is trying to enhance the human elements as well as breed a new race of man. Unfortunately the creature seems to prefer eating women to mating with them and Combs never seems to hit on the idea of artificial insemination.
A corporate science team has arrived to view Combs's stem cell research but they quickly learn the truth behind their invitation. The island is full of all sorts of crossbreeds, particularly carnivorous plants and all of the corporate scientists seem top act like ex-commandos.
I expected a slightly different ending or cliffhanger that never materialized and there were plot paths that were never explored or exploited. Plus we never get a clear view of the creature so the special effects folks never had to figure out hoe to make it move realistically. This is fence-sitting film that has elements to make it good as well as bad.

Longshot, sweet Longshot, you proved too funny by far and now you must fall.
So many stars, you'll need an extra pair of eyes..........2002-07-30
If you love (like me!) all those up and coming pop stars such as
Innocense, Take 5 and others, as well as the already pop superstars NSYNC, O-Town, LFO and Britney Spears... you'll LOVE this movie! It has guest appearances from everybody including some such as Kenny Rogers, Howie D's sister Pollyana, Kevin Eubanks (The Tonight Show) and so many more! The plot may be a repeat of the typical cheesy teen movie, but with so much great talent and music, you can't go wrong! This is a MUST HAVE for any hard core pop fan! (and while you're at it, get the soundtrack too!)
Celeb Cameos and Teen Mushy-Mush.......2002-03-04
"Longshot" is a great movie....if you're a thirteen year old girl who loves *NSYNC. The plot is really dumb, but the celeb cameos provide a lot of comedy. The sappy love story is somewhar interguing, but only fot teenagers and pre-teens. However, if you're a fan of a celeb that's in this movie (especially O-Town or Chris Kirkpatrick who are easily the funniest) it's worth buying if you can find it...less expensive.

longshot.......2006-03-12
not the best of films to see recomended for the younger audience ages 5-10
been looking for this dvd forever.......2006-01-08
and when i finally found it, it sucked! i expected it to be sumwhat stupid silly but it ended up being one of the worst movies ever. the whole story line doesnt even fully make sense. i think this was pearlmans idea to make big bucks off all the boy bands. if u like boy bands (like i do) ur prolly better off with the soundtrack, not the movie. the lines are cheesy, the main characters have no acting backgrounds...jus good looks, which is really pathetic. i paid 7 bucks for this movie and im feeling ripped off already. pretty sad.
WONDERFUL!.......2004-10-09
I loved this movie SOOOO much, its great.. :). It has an even balance and puts people in there you wouldnt expect (ex: Britney Spears as a flight attendant). Its one of those movies that if ur not looking for a minute, u could miss something :). Great storyline too with Lazlo and everything, great great movie- one of my favorites. And, to all BSB fans out there- Howie D.'s sister- Pollyanna is in it *she's a waitress, answers the little girl's question about when the pizza will be ready.* Has something for everyone in it.
wow.......2004-08-18
albert "i thinkim the man" arcuri and joey "my last name is retarted" sculthorpe suck...and so does this movie...don't waste the 5.50 at walmart on it...
