5 out of 5 stars A Sad Farewell To Dick York In An Otherwise First Class Fifth Season.......2007-06-05

I believe the one thing above all else that really made the classic series "Bewitched", so special was the near perfect chemistry between actress Elizabeth Montgomery and actor Dick York as the beautiful housewife witch Samantha and her often harried but always loving husband Darrin. This well thought out teaming of two performers who were so compatible together and who actually seemed to be like a real husband and wife on screen certainly helped to carry "Bewitched", to the incredible success it enjoyed right from Episode One. By the beginning of Season Five, which is now happily being released onto DVD, the classic comedy series had really hit its full stride. With its ratings still high and with the show still collecting an annual batch of Emmy nominations the future for "Bewitched", looked very bright indeed. Season Five despite being very entertaining, as every true fan will know unfortunately has a dark side to it in that Dick York's ongoing back problems meant that he began to miss episodes as the show progressed through its fourth year and on into the fifth. About half way through Season Five with Dick York's health problems growing worse with him often unable to perform, the character of Darrin was repeatedly written out of many of the stories thus loosing that famed "Sam and Darrin", basis to the whole story. His characters absense was usually explained away by having Darrin "away on business", during the episode. Unfortunately York's health crisis didn't improve and he was forced to leave the series all together before the end of the season. It wasn't certain whether he would return for Season Six at that time which explains why an earlier filmed episode "Samantha and Darrin in Mexico City", was held back and shown as the last episode of Season Five.

Despite the tragedies going on behind the scenes during this season on "Bewitched", for the most part it's a terrific season with some wonderful episodes, a few of which even tackle some quite serious social issues that are timely even today. Ironically enough in the light of Dick York's declining health some of the earlier episodes in Season Five such as "Samantha's Wedding Present", and especially the classic "Mirror Mirror on the Wall" in my belief contain some of his greatest and very funniest work and give no indication of the terrible agony he was usually in with his back at this late stage of his involvement with "Bewitched".

Season Five of "Bewitched", holds some real favourites for me and a few of what I feel are the standout episodes are listed below.

"Samantha's Wedding Present", which introduces a more tanned and blonde Elizabeth Montgomery in a story borrowing heavily from the Sci Fi classic "The Incredible Shrinking Man", wherby Endora shrinks Darrin down to miniature size which causes him some harrowing experiences when he encounters the Kravitz's over sized new dog and is captured by an Irish drunk who thinks Darrin is a Leprechaun who he'll only release when he grants him three wishes.

"Mirror, Mirror on the Wall", a great favourite of mine with an absolutely hilarious performance by Dick York when Endora zaps a vanity spell on him making him the most egocentric and vain person imaginable. The sight of Dick York swishing around and camping it up in a Gold Lame Suit, hippy beads and Elvis-like sideburns will have you laughing out loud.

"Samantha's Super Maid", a great performance by Mabel Albertson as the interfering Mrs Stephens Snr. who forces Samantha to hire a new maid much to her and Darrin's opposition considering the witchcraft happening in the house all the time. Endora and Samantha join forces to undo Mrs Stephen's plans to "give Samantha more time away from home duties to socialise with the people who can help boost Darrin up the ladder of success".

"Going Ape", An episode Dick York missed but a very funny story of Tabitha changing an ape into a man who Larry feels has great potential for McMann and Tate's latest ad campaign. Desite his initial reluctance to allow Tabitha to change him back the Man/Ape gets bored with all the attention and with Samantha's help literally "goes ape", in the television studio causing complete mayhem and forcing Larry to fire him.

"Tabitha's Weekend", Another episode without Dick York but a great family domestic story when Phyllis attempts to have Tabitha stay for the weekend much to Samantha's opposition. Phyllis' plans however go astray when Endora and Samantha both also turn up causing all sorts of domestic tensions especially between long time rivals Endora and Phyllis. The resulting mayhem causes Phyllis to develop one of her famous "sick headaches".

"The Battle of Burning Oak", a wonderful story and another great favourite of mine where Endora turns Darrin into a terrible snob who aspires to join the exclusive Burning Oak Country Club. However when Samantha learns of the type of discrimination and "screening" used to gain membership, at the club she sets out to teach the snobs a very humbling lesson in tolerance and acceptance of others regardless of creed, colour, or status, with hilarious results. Samantha's catty lunch with the snobby "ladies", at the club is a comic highlight.

"Daddy Does His Thing", not really a great episode but significant to all "Bewitched", buffs in that this was the final episode Dick York actually filmed before collapsing with a massive seizure. Quite heart breaking to watch as you can clearly see for the first time how terribly ill Dick York was during its filming.

"Samantha and Darrin in Mexico City", an earlier episode held back to finish the season off with a Dick York appearance. Complications arise for Darrin when Endora casts a spell that makes him disappear everytime he attempts to speak Spanish to a potential client group while in Mexico City. Samantha saves the day with a few spells of her own that allows Darrin to deliver a long dinner speech in both English and Spanish.

5 out of 5 stars Great Season..........2007-05-14

Bewitched Season 5 - Pre-order Release date July, 10, 2007

Bewitched Season 5 is a GREAT season and it will be the last season that Dick York will play the roll as Darrin Stephens. He will truly be missed after this season because he had such wonderful chemistry with Elizabeth Montgomery and more so I believe than Sargent. No offence to Dick Sargent because they both played good roles but I do feel that York had better chemistry and was quite funny to watch.

Aunt Clara (Marion Lorne) will sadly not be in this season or the rest of the seasons of Bewitched because she passed away from a sudden heart attack right before the filming of Bewitched Season 5. She will be surely missed!

I definitely recommend this season for any Bewitched fan!! There are many great shows on this set and Tabatha will have more show time as well. Another reviewer right before me has included a list of all the shows in this set so I decided not to duplicate it. I am buying this season because I am a big fan of the show and also to dedicate this set to Dick York because of his last appearances, I have not decided if I am going to purchase "Bewitched Season 6-8" yet because York will not appear but I may buy them to get a complete set.

Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars The last of the classics..........2007-05-07

This fifth season of Bewitched was the last good one before the show began to run out of ideas (evident by the recycling of earlier episode plots in the sixth season onward). Here's the list of the episodes you'll be getting plus a brief description:

Let's hope they give us some extras on this one; haven't seen too much of that since the release of the first season and there are some terrific documentaries on the cast and the show itself that could and should be issued at some stage. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Having a Bewitching time with Sam and the Gang .......2007-05-04

This is the 5th season of the eight year series and the final for Dick York as he became ill while filming the series and he had missed a lot of episodes in this season so Elizabeth Montgomery had to react with somebody who usually with David White (Larry Tate) and even with herself when she became Serena her cousin. the most memerable episode in this season for me is when Serena turned Darrin's mum into a cat as Phyllis was being very catty towards Sams family. Another episode I liked is when she collected money for UNICEF where a person wouldn't pay it so she haunted him until he paid it. So for all you Bewitched fans this is a must have. So I definately give a 5 out of 5 for this season. So I hope they will bring out the remainder of this series before this year is out.

4 out of 5 stars Beginning of the Decline of the best show ever!.......2007-04-24

Season 5 of Bewitched was a turning point for several reasons, which all add up to the series' decline. But Season 5 has many enjoyable episodes and much going for it that makes this set a must-have for all fans of the series.

On the positive side, cousin Serena makes more appearances this season and establishes her character in her own right instead of just a double for Samantha. Her best episode was "Mrs. Stephens, Where Are You?" where Serena turns Darrin's mother into a cat. A classic episode! Also, Tabitha has more lines and shows that Erin Murphy was truly a gifted child actor. Her best eipisode was when she turned Amy into a butterfly. She was also great when she turns herself into a raisin cookie. Too bad she didn't do much more after Bewitched ended. She would have been great on Little House on the Prairie or Eight is Enough at least as a guest star. Other favorite episodes include "Samantha Twitches for UNICEF", and "Samantha Goes South for a Spell". Dick York shines when Endora zaps a vanity spell on him, and "aids" him in speaking Spanish. Social issues are also explored this season with "The Battle of Burning Oak" regarding racism and classism. Truly hysterical the way that is approached.

However, on the down side, Aunt Clara is now gone with no explanation even though it was known that Marion Lorne had passed away, but no explanation about Aunt Clara. Uncle Arthur is somewhat less lovable when he starts goofing up his spells. Endora's dark side gets darker. And the worst thing that happened which the series never recovered from, Dick York fell ill and had to leave the show before the season had ended. This was truly tragic. But if you can get past the downside, you can still enjoy Season 5 of Bewitched. I plan to!!!

The introduction of color takes a bit of the magic out of <I>Bewitched</I>, but adorable toddler Tabitha brings her own special enchantment to this third season, which earned Emmy nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series. Also nominated were Elizabeth Montgomery as sophisticated, albeit domesticated, witch Samantha, Agnes Morehead as her disapproving mother Endora, and Marion Lorne as addled Aunt Clara, whose mis-spellings wreak havoc in the Stephens household, as when she unwittingly conjures up Ben Franklin in "My Friend Ben." As the season begins, "typical average baby" Tabitha reveals her heretofore-dormant supernatural powers. In the next episode, "The Moment of Truth," Darrin (Dick York) is distressed to find out about his daughter. "Remember 'normal'?" he wails to his wife. "We were going to have a normal married life" Though one laments that Serena is missing in action, the return of Bernard Fox as Dr. Bombay (in "There's Gold in Them Thar Pills") and Paul Lynde's practical joker Uncle Arthur are always welcome, even if Arthur's feud with Endora in "Endora Moves in for a Spell" never reaches the comic heights of season 2's "The Joker Is a Card" (the Yagazuzie Zim episode).

Other venerable character actors cast their distinctive spells, including Estelle Winwood ("Hold Me, Touch Me" in the original <I>The Producers</I>) and Reta Shaw (<I>Mary Poppins</I>) as Endora's sisters in "Witches and Warlocks Are My Favorite Things</I>; Marty Ingalls as a rival ad agency spy in "Dangerous Diaper Dan"; Norman "Mr. Roper" Fell as Sigmund Freud(!) in "I'd Rather Twitch Than Fight"; and, in a bizarre cameo, Willie Mays as one of Endora's Halloween party guests in "Twitch or Treat." ("You mean he's a...," Darrin stammers. "The way he hits home runs?" Samantha replies, "What else?"). Sandra Gould, replacing Alice Pearce, joins the cast as busybody neighbor Gladys Kravitz. One of the season's most enjoyable episodes is "A Most Unusual Wood Nymph," which allowed York to break out of his confounded husband character to portray the lusty Darrin the Bold, a cursed 14th-century ancestor. And with the sight of the ravishing Montgomery in a castle-maid costume, who needs extras in this otherwise charmed four-disc set? <I>--Donald Liebenson</I>

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL WONDERFUL WONDERFUL.......2007-05-15

Great Acting - Not Great looking actors!
Oh how I long for the 70's!
This collection is wonderful - A TV show that I can watch over and over and over and still LOVE IT!
Big Fan of this VERY FUN and FUNNY SHOW - Bewitched!
I say Buy it, You'll love it!

5 out of 5 stars Bewitched is Fun & Clever........2007-05-14

This classic comedy series was fun and clever - Elizabeth Montgomery is always charming, and has to fix up all the mischief around her and her exasperated husband. Even the kooky neighbor lady is suspicious, while her doubting husband is funny. Magical mischievous things happen, and you can believe. You cannot watch this show on TV currently (except maybe in wee-hours). So you should buy these DVDs, The show is a fantasy like Melissa Joan Hart's TV shows as a Teenage Witch. And you can rent Nicole Kidman's recent Bewitched movie, to sample the fun.

5 out of 5 stars bewitched third season.......2007-04-10

I have always liked the Bewitched series, since I watched it with my family when I was little. I always remembered how upbeat and funny it was. And of course I thought ( and still do) Samantha was so beautiful! I had a crush on her.
I have a lot of the series on VHS over the past several years from the shows being on a variety of channels. Having them on a DVD format is of course the ultimate quality and no commercials! I like the added features that are on some of them. They do a great job of bringing back the memories!
I am looking forward to the fifth season to come out on DVD!!

4 out of 5 stars STAY TUNED FOR "BEWITCHED"; NEXT: IN COLOR.......2007-03-19

The Third Season of BEWITCHED was actually a season of several important "Firsts." The Third Season was the first season of episodes shot in color. Erin and Diane Murphy also join the cast in the role of little toddler Tabitha.

THIRD SEASON HIGHLIGHTS:

In the episode "Witches And Warlocks Are A Few Of My Favorite Things", Tabitha's witchly powers are tested on a weekend. Samantha ( Elizabeth Montgomery) explains that, although it is the weekend, her husband Darrin (Dick York) has to work. Aunt Hagatha (Reta Shaw) happily replies, "Good. Humans emit such a low-grade frequency they upset my instruments."
Samantha at first tries to avoid telling Darrin that Tabitha has inherited her special powers. Later, Samantha and Darrin have a hectic time trying to keep the truth about Tabitha from Darrin's boss Larry and his wife Louise (David White and Kasey Rogers.)
"BEWITCHED": THE COMPLETE THIRD SEASON" is best as a perfect showcase for the talents of wonderful Marion Lorne as sweet, bumbling, delightfully vague Aunt Clara, who causes much unintentional havoc in the Stephens household. Clara causes a massive Statewide electrical blackout. The Stephens' residence remains the only household for miles with the lights miraculously still on! Clara accidentally zaps both Queen Victoria and Ben Franklin back from the past. The two historical people become two very "SURPRISE!" houseguests. Clara also gives Larry and Louise "Accidental Twins" when she magically creates an identical double of their son.

Samantha travels back in time to save Darrin from a curse in "A Most Unusual Wood Nymph"; where she meets Darrin's ancestor Darrin The Bold, also played by Dick York. In "Bewitched, Bothered and Infuriated," Darrin and Samantha travel back in time to prevent Larry from having a terrible accident. All this occurs because of some mis-information from Aunt Clara. The Witches Society finally has enough of Clara's magical mis-fires, and, in the outstanding episode "The Trial And Error Of Aunt CLara", they seek to excommunicate her. Samantha immediately leaps to her defense; but she only nearly avoids disaster as she simultaneously tries to defend her beloved Aunt and keep Darrin busy in the den so he won't find out what exactly is going on in the living room!!

* Episode #101: The Crone Of Cawdor: (3-16-67): This is a strangely weird, mystical and delightful episode. Dorothy Neuman plays a 500-year old crone who switches places with Darrin's attractive client Terry Warbell (Julie Gregg). The Crone hopes that Darrin will kiss her; thereby she will steal Darrin's youth! The transformed and confused Terry shows up at the Kravitz's house. Gladys (Sandra Gould) telephones Samantha about the strange visitor. Gladys says, "I have a feeling she's YOUR kind of people."

*Episode 106: "Nobody but a Frog Knows How To Live" (4-27-67): Character actor John Fiedler makes a memorable guest appearance as Fergus, a "human frog" who hopes that Samantha can unhex a hex and turn him back into a frog.

In the last episode of the Third Season, (Episode 107:: 5-4-67) titled "There's Gold In Them There Pills," Bernard Fox makes his first appearance as Dr. Bombay. The wacky-quaky witch doctor finds an instant miracle cure for the common cold; but his cure has an hilarious side-effect on mere mortals!

Despite critical barbs as sharp as a Maroobi spear, <I>Gilligan's Island</I> has proven unsinkable. Its first season was 1964's top-rated show. The expository theme song is one of television's most quoted, and its characters--the Skipper (Alan Hale Jr.), first mate Gilligan (Bob Denver), the millionaire (Jim Backus) and his wife (Natalie Schaefer), a movie star (Tina Louise), "and the rest" (Russell Johnson and Dawn Wells, as the Professor and Mary Ann, wouldn't get their opening credit props until season two)--are pop culture icons. Revisiting the first season's 36 episodes is a not-guilty-at-all pleasure. Some sure and surprising hands piloted these inaugural episodes, including Ida Lupino, Jack Arnold (<I>The Creature from the Black Lagoon</I>), Christian Nyby (<I>The Thing</I>), and Richard Donner (who went on to direct <I>Superman</I> and <I>Lethal Weapon</I>).

The "seven stranded castaways" from the ill-fated S.S. <I>Minnow</I> (slyly named for former Federal Communications Commission head Newton "vast wasteland" Minow) received memorable visits from the likes of Hans Conreid as errant pilot Wrong Way Feldman, a young Kurt Russell as Jungle Boy, and Larry Storch as a Cagney-esque bank robber. But these were mere diversions from the heart of the series; the no-man-is-an-island social microcosm that creator Sherwood Schwartz conceived as an anti-war parable (this courtesy of his optional commentary during the fabled unaired series pilot). In the Christmas episode "Birds Gotta Fly, Fish Gotta Talk," Santa Claus himself drops in to lift the disheartened castaways' spirits. "You could have been enemies," he tells them, "instead of a family group who all learned to get along." This is they key to this series' enduring popularity. That, and the unending debate: Ginger or Mary Ann? <I>--Donald Liebenson</I>

Description

EPISODE SYNOPSES Pilot: Ginger, Maryann and the Professor are different people. Mary-Ann's name is Bunny and her character is more like the current Ginger. Ginger is more like Mary-Ann but still called Ginger. The Professor is very much a ladies man. Since the episode never aired, the show was drastically altered, characters were replaced and so was the now, unforgettable theme song. Episode 1: "Two on a Raft" - The castaways find themselves marooned on the island. Gilligan and the Skipper set sail on a home-made raft in an attempt to find help. After sailing for days and battling obstacles such as sharks and Gilligan's unending hunger, they land back on Gilligan's island without realizing it. Episode 2: "Home Sweet Hut" - A hurricane is coming, so the Castaways must quickly build one large community hut in which to weather the storm. However, they soon get on each-others nerves, so they later decide to branch out and build individual huts. Episode 3: "Voodoo Something to Me" - The Skipper fears that the island is full of 'voodoo' when he thinks that Gilligan has been turned into a monkey. Episode 4: "Goodnight Sweet Skipper" - The castaways hear on the radio that a plane is going to be flying over their island, but they will be unable to contact them because their transmitter is broken. Episode 5: "Wrongway Feldman" - When Gilligan finds an old airplane hidden in the jungle, the Castaways discover a long-forgotten aviator living on the island. Episode 6: "President Gilligan" - The castaways decide that they need someone to be the leader on the island, and so they hold elections. Episode 7: "The Sound of Quacking" - The Castaways are faced with running out of food, when a blight threatens to destroy many of their plants. When Gilligan finds a duck in the lagoon, a difficult decision must be made. Episode 8: "Goodbye Island" - Gilligan discovers a special tree sap that can be used to make a good tasting pancake syrup. Then the professor discovers that the same tree sap also makes a super glue, that may allow the castaways to repair the Minnow. Episode 9: "The Big Gold Strike" - Mr. Howell discovers a gold mine on the island. He then hires Gilligan to work in the mine. When gold fever strikes the castaways and Mr. Howell is unwilling to share the gold, they begin to charge outlandish prices for the supplies and food that Mr. Howell needs. Episode 10: "Waiting for Watubi" - While digging, the Skipper uncovers a carved statue of a Tiki God. He then believes a curse has fallen on him for disturbing the resting-place of Watubi, and that his days are numbered. Episode 11: "Angel on the Island" - Mr. Howell decides to put on a play, staring Ginger, after she begins to suffer from home sickness. Trouble begins, however, when Mrs. Howell decides she wants to play the starring role. Mel Blanc is the voice of the parrot. Episode 12: "Birds Gotta Fly, Fish Gotta Talk" - During Christmas, the Castaways get homesick and remember the first day they were shipwrecked. When Santa Claus "appears" on the island, many suspect he is the Skipper in costume. However, just as Santa departs while wishing the Castaways a Merry Christmas, the Skipper appears from the other direction. Episode 13: "Three Million Dollars More or Less" - Mr. Howell loses $3 million to Gilligan in a golfing contest. Mr. Howell then tricks Gilligan into trading for a worthless oil well that he owns. Episode 14: "Water Water Everywhere" - Talk about a painful irony: though surrounded by water, the Castaways suddenly discover that their supply of fresh drinking water is running out. Episode 15: "So Sorry, My Island Now" - The Castaways are captured by a Japanese sailor who thinks that WWII never ended. When the other castaways are captured, it is up to Gilligan to save them. Episode 16: "Plant You Now, Dig You Later" - While working for Mr. Howell, Gilligan unearths a chest. The castaways think it must contain a pirate's treasure. Episode 17: "Little Island, Big Gun" - A mob leader and his henchmen, fleeing from the police, land on the island. Episode 18: "X Marks the Spot" - In a test of a deadly new missile, called "Operation Powder Keg," the Air Force chooses an "uninhabited island" which just happens to be Gilligan's Island. Episode 19: "Gilligan Meets Jungle Boy" - Gilligan discovers a jungle boy living on the island. He shows them a hole in the ground that causes objects to float, and the professor theorizes that it is expelling either helium or hydrogen. Kurt Russell is the guest star. Episode 20: "St. Gilligan and the Dragon" - Angry because the men haven't kept their promise to build them private houses, the women decide to move to the other side of the island in protest. Episode 21: "Big Man on Little Stick" - Handsome surfer Duke Williams rides a giant tsunami to the island. At first, the castaways are excited as Duke thinks he will turn around and surf back to Hawaii (and send help). However, after seeing Mary Ann and Ginger, he decides he may want to stay for a while. Episode 22: "Diamonds Are an Ape's Best Friend"- A gorilla is enchanted by Mrs. Howell's perfume and kidnaps her. After Gilligan accidentally spills the perfume all over his shirt, the gorilla decides to release Mrs. Howell and exchange prisoners. Episode 23: "How to be a Hero"- After Gilligan is unable to save Mary Ann from drowning in the lagoon, the Skipper must jump in and rescue both of them. The Castaways then devise schemes to boost Gilligan's ego, and help him feel like a hero. Episode 24: "The Return of Wrongway Feldman" - The castaways are revisited by 'Wrongway' Feldman. Episode 25: "The Matchmaker" - Mrs. Howell decides to engineer a romance between Gilligan and Mary Ann. Episode 26: "Music Hath Charm" - Mrs. Howell decides to form a symphony orchestra, to make up for the lack of culture on the island. Gilligan's drum beats, as they drift across the water, hold special meaning to angry natives on a nearby island. Episode 27: "New Neighbor Sam" - The Castaways overhear the voices of gangsters discussing buried treasure and threatening their lives. The voices turn out to belong to a parrot, who then leads the castaways to the "treasure." Episode 28: "They're Off and Running" - Mr. Howell wins all of the Skipper's possessions betting on turtle races. Even when he feels bad and switches the turtles so that Skipper will finally win, he still wins! Episode 29: "Three to Get Ready" - The Skipper insists a stone found by Gilligan will grant the finder three wishes before sundown. The professor, of course, insists it is just superstition. Episode 30: "Forget Me Not" -The Professor tries to cure the Skipper's amnesia by hypnotizing him and taking him through time. Episode 31: "Diogenes, Won't You Please Go Home" - The Castaways discover that Gilligan has been keeping a secret diary. When they read it, they all seem to disagree with how certain events unfolded and tell their side of the story. Episode 32: "Physical Fatness" - Gilligan and the Skipper plan to join the Navy when they are rescued. However, when weighing themselves, they discover that Gilligan must gain weight, while the Skipper must diet. Episode 33: "It's Magic" - Gilligan finds a raft, oh wait, no, the Great Raftini's magic trunk. Ginger knows how to use the magical tricks and the castaways plan to use the magic to scare away angry natives if they ever got to their island again. Episode 34: "Goodbye Old Paint" - A famous painter who has renounced civilization, Dubov, visits the island (with a short-wave radio, of course). The castaways are hopeful that Dubov will give them his transmitter, but soon discover he does not wish to go back to civilization. Episode 35: "My Fair Gilligan" - After Gilligan saves Mrs. Howell's life, Mr. Howell decides to make him his son. He immediately puts Gilligan through basic training to be a millionaire's socialite son (dream sequence), changing the way he walks, talks and dresses. However, Gilligan and the rest of the castaways miss the "old Gilligan." Episode 36: "A Nose By Any Other Name" - A fall from a coconut tree gives Gilligan an inflated nose and a deflated ego. When Gilligan decides he wants the Professor to perform plastic surgery on his nose, the Professor pretends to perform the surgery, and instead, relies on the recuperation time behind the bandages to allow the swelling to go down. When the bandages are finally removed, Gilligan decides he is happy with his old nose!

5 out of 5 stars Season 1 is Number 1.......2007-02-22

This is the best of the three Gilligan's Island series. Many of the episodes focus on the castaways adapting to their new environment. The plots seem more creative and are not as strange as many of the shows in the last two seasons. Season one contains episodes that actually seem like situations that would happen on a deserted island such as: South Pacific superstitions; determining who is in charge of the group; attempts to repair the boat; finding lost treasure; dwindling supplies of fresh water; a stranded Japanese WW II soldier; encounters with wild animals; and visits from nearby natives. Even the guests from modern civilization that visit the island seem to fit the motif of the island better than the visitors that appear in the next two seasons. This is also the only season to contain a Christmas special. My kids really like the shows and watch them all the time. The character of Gilligan seems a little more toned down in Season 1 than in the other two. Although he is a complete bumbling goofball in this season, his ignorance, naivety, and absentmindedness seem to be intensified in the later seasons. Even though Season 1 is in black and white, I still like it the best.

4 out of 5 stars Ginger a Judo Expert!!!.......2007-02-21

This is a dvd that I keep going back to. I remember as a kid watching after school and being entertained. The slapstick style comedy is silly but keeps you smiling.
For me, one of the funniest episodes of the whole series is in season one. "Diogenes, Won't You Please Go Home" is a classic. Gilligan is tied to a tree and about to be shot from the Japanese Sailor. The lovable and usually helpless Ginger appears from behind a tree to save him. Since Ginger normally uses her looks to get what she wants, you think that she is going to do the same here. But instead of sweet talking or smiling, she engages the sailor in a judo fight in which she flips him to the ground...several times. I remember the first time I saw this episode as a kid, I was so amazed and off guard. It was soooo funny. The sailor would attack her several times, only to be fliped on the ground with a loud thud. The scene keeps flashing to Gilligans facial expressions. He looks like he can't believe what he is seeing. She then knocks out the sailor with a karate chop and announces "So much for him". I remember laughing at this days later. I had never seen anything like it. Ginger - good looking and able to beat up men when necessary. Whoever wrote that scene is a very clever. It is still my favorite scene in the series.

My stars! The first, and perhaps most magical, season of <I>Bewitched</I> still casts an enchanting spell. For escapist fantasy, this series, no doubt inspired by the play <I>Bell, Book and Candle</I>, broke significant television ground. The Stephens were sitcoms' first mixed marriage. Advertising executive Darrin Stephens (Dick York) was mortal, and wife Samantha (Elizabeth Montgomery) was a witch. According to a retrospective segment included on this four-disc set, the Stephenses were also the first couple to sleep in one bed! And Samantha's mother, Endora (the venerable Agnes Morehead), and father, Maurice (Maurice Evans, most popularly known as Dr. Zaius in the original <I>Planet of the Apes</I>, were TV's first separated couple. Surely, Darrin did for advertising what Dick Van Dyke's Rob Petrie did for comedy writing. And nose-twitching Samantha certainly gave Mary Tyler Moore's Laura Petrie a run for the money in the sexy suburbanite sweepstakes. This high-concept series' saving grace was that Darrin insisted that Samantha not engage in any "hocus-pocus." But in this first season, she would be compelled to use her extraordinary powers to right social wrongs (such as derogatory-witch stereotypes in the Halloween episode "The Witches Are Out"), champion the underdog (a lonely boy whose overprotective mother won't let him play baseball in "Little Pitchers Have Big Fears"), or to restore a troubled boy's Christmas spirit ("A Vision of Sugar Plums"). Or, she might just want to turn the tables on an insulting former girlfriend of Darrin's (the pilot, "Darrin, Take This Witch, Samantha").

York and Montgomery had palpable chemistry. They also received able support by a stellar ensemble of character actors. Alice Pearce and Marion Lorne would earn Emmys for their signature roles as busybody neighbor Mrs. Kravitz and dotty Aunt Clara, respectively. George Tobias portrayed oblivious. long-suffering Abner Kravitz, with David White as Darrin's boss, Larry Tate. In today's more PC climate, <I>Bewitched</I> may offend the "ban <I>Harry Potter</I>" crowd. But for baby boomers especially, this inaugural set will happily conjure up vintage television memories. <I>--Donald Liebenson</I><I></I>

5 out of 5 stars Sheer Magic.......2007-05-25

Well, this is an awesome show for one! The first season, filled with Samantha trying to adapt to being a non-witch, and in every episode failing in someway. The ups and downs of her struggle make everyone love her even more.

I for one, love this show and I can't wait until the rest of the series is released on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Job Sony!.......2007-05-07

I was happy to see that the first episode was left in Black and White. Of course, we were not among the few who had gotten color television sets when they first came out but I was glad that they did not colorize the Black and White episodes. I just ordered the last of the whole series and I can't wait to get it. Do yourself a favor, spend some time reading the customer reviews and only purchase from the studios that own the rights to the original prints of the shows. I got burned by purchasing another show from another site and it was horrible. I ended up giving it away. If you liked Bewitched, THE WHOLE SERIES IS A MUST HAVE!

5 out of 5 stars Love Bewitched!.......2007-03-31

This black and white beginning of Bewitched will draw you in and make you want more. I had never seen the first few episodes until these dvds; it was a treat. I love watching the beginning and seeing the characters develop. You get a real feel for how much this cast really respected and worked well with eachother. As a kid watching re-runs of bewitched i always thought about how cool it would be to know sam or be her kid; watching these dvds as an adult i feel the same way :).

5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT! .......2007-03-20

I am soooo happy to finally get this dvd set. I have loved the show since I caught them in re-run in the 90s.. but unfortunately, i have never been able to watch them from beginning to end... i just caught them whenever they were on tv. FINALLY, i saw them on amazon and i bought all 4 seasons.. i can't wait for the rest to come out. this is such an awesome show and i just love every episode. the only thing i wish it will have more of, was the bloopers and the extra features.

5 out of 5 stars BLESSING, MAGIC, & A MESSAGE IN "BEWITCHED".......2007-03-19

My connection and affection for "BEWITCHED", that super special '60's Sitcom , is so strong I often thought William Asher and Elizabeth Montgomery conjured up the series especially for me. I am delighted the series is available, complete and unedited, on DVD. The first four Seasons are currently available, and I shall review each season in turn, I highly recommend purchasing the First and Second Season episodes in the original black and white; as they were originally broadcast. It's all high-quality. With the exception of the excellent series pilot episode, the picture quality of each episode is pristine. The show was blessed and a blessing from the very beginning. "BEWITCHED" remains one of the most perfectly written, directed, and cast shows in TV history. The writing was clever, imaginative, and often innovative. Within its fantasy framework, "BEWITCHED" included important messages about the stupidity of prejudice and stereotypes, and the importance of inclusion and unconditional love. The show succeeded brilliantly because the premise never became more precious than the characters and their relationships. The series, naturally, speaks about the "empowerment of women" (and by extention, the empowerment of all people who might feel like an outsider because they are
in some way "different from the norm" or blessed with special abilities). Samantha is amazing. She is something of an outsider, but she perfectly and naturally assimilates into a mortal, suburban society that will never fully understand, accept, or appreciate her special abilities. Samantha can easily sacrifice her witchcraft because it is not a sacrifice of herself or her special "essence". She maintains her feminity, her individuality, and her intelligence, This is because Samantha's self-definition is never wrapped up in the fact that she is "a witch"-- a very important fact that her mortal husband and disapproving family never completely understood. A central theme in many classic fantasy stories is the adage: "With great power comes great responsibility." Samantha is a level-headed lady who knows that witchcraft is merely a gift; and she knows how to use her gift wisely and well. On the rare occasion when a mere mortal like Darrin was temporarily gifted with supernatural powers, the results were disasterous because the power went to his head.
The pilot episode, credited to Sol Saks, is perfectly written and perfectly sets up the series to follow. The series begins with the magic four words: "Once Upon A Time." Samantha (Elizabeth Montgomery) is properly introduced
as a "typical American girl who happens to be... a witch." Fearing a prejudical reaction from her mortal mate Darrin, Samantha doesn't tell him of her special heritage unil their honymoon night. She was right. Darrin freaks out, but Dick York is excellent as the bothered, bewildered, and harried husband on the verge of a nervous breakdown, Samantha promises not to do anymore magic "stuff"; or at least to "taper off." But the audience will cheer when Samantha gives Darrin's snobby ex-girlfriend Shelia (Nancy Kovack) exactly what she deserves at a dinner party. Samantha and Darrin were TV'S first "mixed marriage"; and also the first TV couple to sleep in the same bed! Samantha's parents, Endora and Maurice (the outstanding Agnes Moorehead and Maurice Evans) are happily separated and furious over their daughter's apparent marital bliss
* SEASON ONE HIGHLIGHTS: Endora is quite cordial towards Darrin at their first meeting. "Why do you object to my daughter being who and what she is?" (The audience may well be asking the same thing). Darrin explains he wants to live a "normal" existence. Endora archly replies, "What is normal to YOU young man, is to US... Assinine!" The classic Endora vs. Darrin battle is officially ON! Endora's reaction is nothing compared to Samantha's infuriated father Maurice, who makes Darrin vanish to who knows where or what. Samantha pleads, "I love him... with all my heart I love him. Please don't take him away from me." Elizabeth Montgomery's performance is so sincere and touching, you never doubt the depth of Samantha's love for Darrin. The scene is a perfect illustration of one of the show's central themes: unconditional love is the most powerful "magic" of all.
* Alice Pearce is superb as Gladys Kravitz, the neighbor across the street who knows there is something special about Samantha. Pearce's priceless and pearless comedic talent reaches its apex in the episode "Abner Kadabra." Gladys sees Samantha do some magic, and Samantha hurriedly convinces her that she, Gladys, has "got the power" of ESP. This leads to a seance scene where Gladys' long-suffering husband Abner (George Tobias) is briefly turned to dust. Marion Lorne is instantly endearing as Samantha's dotty and adorable Aunt Clara. In "There's No Witch Like An Old Witch," Clara innocently tells some neighboorhood children she's a witch, and a battle-ax mother tries to have Clara declared mentally incompetent. Samantha, of course, will not stand for this.
* In "Driving Is The Only Way To Fly," Paul Lynde makes an early appearance as Harold Harold, a neurotic instructor who tries to teach Samantha to drive a car. Lynde subsequently joined the cast in the Second Season
as Samantha's mischievious Uncle Arthur. In "It Takes One To Know One," Endora sends a brunette witch to seduce Darrin (!!) and, in another episode, Christopher George makes a memorable guest appearance as a warlock ex-boyfriend of Samantha. George initially arrives to whisk Samantha away. He turns Darrin into a penquin, and ends up falling in love with Danger O'Reilly, a very mortal and attractive neighbor of Samantha and Darrin.
** "BEWITCHED" is a comedy of its time that easily transcended the decade of its original broadcasts to achieve
timelessness. There are countless reasons why "BEWITCHED" is as enduring as it is endearing. The allure of Elizabeth Montgomery is a primary factor. She is the main attraction. Just as Samantha bewitched Darrin, Elizabeth Montgomery enchanted TV audiences with her natural charms and the subtle, sincere delicacy of her performance. Although Montgomery and most of the rest of the marvelous "BEWITCHED" cast have sadly passed away, the spell they continue to cast is impossible to break. Don't be surprised if "BEWITCHED" makes you feel uplifted with tears in your eyes.

Actress-writer-director Ida Lupino got one of her unfortunately rare opportunities behind a camera making this 1966 family comedy about two mischievous students (Hayley Mills, June Harding) making life difficult for the nuns at a girls' convent school. Rosalind Russell has a fine part as a mother superior vexed by their pranks and outwardly chilly until the girls catch her in a more private moment of emotional release. The script has an anecdotal structure--it's sort of one thing after another with Mills's and Harding's troublemakers--but there is a rising sense that these two kids gradually develop some awareness of the pain and sacrifices of others. A fun and touching movie all around, with a nice twist at the end. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

Description

Hayley Mills and June Harding act up in this affectionate comedy as two juvenile pranksters at the St. Francis Academy for Girls. It is up to Rosalind Russell, starring as the patient and understanding Mother Superior, to show them the right path. Starring Rosalind Russell and Hayley Mills.

Cute funny movie, about girls, but my boys think it is funny. A nice wholesome movie for anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Trouble with Angels.......2007-05-12

This movie is a classic of all ages. A fond memory from my childhood.

5 out of 5 stars The Trouble With Angels.......2007-05-12

This is a funny, heart-warming movie of life in a Catholic boarding school. It is based on Jane Trahey's experiences as related in her book, LIFE WITH MOTHER SUPERIOR. The sisters in the book are portrayed as positive role models - wise, capable and loving. The students themselves come to appreciate the sisters' dedication and sacrifice as the story progresses. Wonderful family movie!

5 out of 5 stars HAVE TO SEE.......2007-01-12

This movie is so much fun. It is filled with so much action & stunts by these 2 girls but also the nuns. They are a riot also. The twist in the end is a real tear jerker & also it makes you laugh at the same time. You have to see this movie!

5 out of 5 stars My Review.......2007-01-10

Excellent family movie! This is a great comedy that my family and I grew up watching. I was unable to locate this film in local video stores and was glad when I found it on Amazon.com. Its a great movie for the entire family to watch.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Smart & Funny.......2007-05-08

This is my #1 fav tv comedy of ALL TIME (#2 is 'everybody loves raymond').

Bewitched's 2nd season is even better than the 1st with the birth of Stephens' baby girl Tabitha and introduction to the characters Serena and Uncle Arthur (who actually appeared in Season 1 as the driving instructor, which added more interesting stories and dynamics to the show.

I have purchased this set about a month or so ago and finished watching them in 2 days (I just couldn't stop!!) and I have re-watched them at least 5x so far. In addition to the humor and entertainment value, i find this show also being educational. very often, the dialogs make reference to historical events/person as well as some older 'jargons' that people no longer use these days.

overall, i am very happy with my purchase (I bought all 4 seasons) and can't wait for the rest to come out!

5 out of 5 stars Samantha & the gang keep you laughing........2007-05-04

I still love Bewitched always have always will. The show seems never to age. It was actually funny & sweet so I had to get this season as well as the others. It's worth the price , not only for me to see my favorite show again but because now with kids of my own they like it & it's a safe show for kids. The dvds themselves were good quality. For me it was a good buy all the way around.

4 out of 5 stars Colorization.......2007-04-12

The colorization of these are the best of have seen for any series in a long time. My only disappointment is that there is no added value. Sony should have at least pulled a few promos or such from their vaults!

5 out of 5 stars Bewitched - Second Season.......2007-03-26

Once again, we are very happy with this Bewitched DVD release. This season is a 5 disc set. I purchased the colorized version and again, am very pleased with it. My children love this show and it is nice to see the COMPLETE, not syndicated, episodes on this release. Great show to add to your DVD collection.

4 out of 5 stars "WE'RE IN FOR A GOOD SPELL".......2007-03-19

Once again, I highly recommend purchasing these Second Season episodes in Black And White. as they were originally broadcast:

During Season One of "BEWITCHED", director William Asher craftily and cleverly shot around the pregnancy of his then real-life wife and the series shining star Elizabeth Montgomery. She was again pregnant at the start of
the Second Season. But this time, instead of concealing it, Samantha and Darrin become the proud parents of Tabitha in the episode "And Something Makes Three." This episode also features a memorable guest appearance by Eve Arden as the nurse who attends Samantha. Moreover, this extra special episode features
Montgomery's debut performance as Serena, Samantha's brunette, sultry, look-alike Cousin. When Darrin (Dick York) first sees Serena, he thinks she is baby Tabitha, magically transformed into an adult!!
OTHER SECOND SEASON HIGHLIGHTS:

In "We're In For A Bad Spell", Samantha, Darrin and Aunt Clara (Marion Lorne) try to save a friend of Darrin's from being the victim of a centuries' old spell. In "The Joker Is A Card," Samantha lifts the lid off a serving dish to reveal Uncle Arthur (Paul Lynde).
In the series' second Halloween episode, Endora (Agnes Moorehead) becomes infuriated with Darrin and transforms him into a werewolf. The werewolf make-up and York's performance in this episode is superb.
Bernard Fox makes his initial series appearance in "Disappearing Samantha." Fox plays Osgood Rightmire, a smug, phony witch-hunter who mutters an incantation that causes Samantha, and later Endora, to vanish. Fox would, of course, become a series regular as Dr. Bombay, the wacky-quaky witch doctor in the final episode of the Third Season titled "There's Gold In Them There Pills." Richard Dreyfuss makes his professional acting debut as a rotten warlock named Rodney in the episode "Man's Best Friend."
** The series bids an especially regrettable and sad farewell to Alice Pearce, who died of cancer during production. In her final appearances as neighbor Gladys Kravitz, Pearce is heartbreakingly thin and frail. Luckily, these episodes from the First And Second Seasons survive as a lasting testament to Pearce's comedic genius. Pearce won a well-deserved posthumous Emmy for her outstanding performance. Sandra Gould stepped into the role of Gladys in the Third Season, offering a more annoying and abrasive, ultimately unsympathetic, interpretation that never equalled the inspired work of the priceless Alice Pearce,
**Pearce's death was one of several behind the camera tragedies that "BEWITCHED" weathered. One of the series' best episodes "Divided He Falls" unintentionally forshadows a real tragedy yet to come. In this episode, Endora divides a seriously overworked Darrin into two, so the Serious Darrin can stay working, while the Fun Darrin takes Samantha on vacation. Dick York has a ball as Serious Darrin/Fun Darrin; although it is obviously a double and not York who first jumps off and then back on to a swimming pool dividing board in one scene. When she first discovers what Endora has done, an infuriated Samantha exclaims, "Mother, I only want ONE DARRIN!" Behind the camera, York sustained an agonizingly painful back injury years prior to "BEWITCHED."
York developed a serious addiction to painkillers, and eventually couldn't handle the physical comedy requirements of the role. Actor Dick Sargent was brought in as an emergency replacement as Darrin at the start of Season Six in 1969.
On a happier note, I wrote Elizabeth Montgomery a long overdue letter of appreciation in 1990. One year later, I received a beautiful autographed picture from her. That photo is one of my most cherished possesions.
It hangs on my kitchen wall, along with several other photos of lovely Elizabeth Montgomery.

Forget about a three-hour tour--<I>Gilligan's Island</I> fans can sit right back and enjoy all 32 episodes of the much-loved television comedy and even a few extras with this three-disc set. <I>GI</I> aficionados will probably argue which episode deserves to be called the best in the series' three-year history until the end of time, but few will disagree that its sophomore season (1965-66) contains some of its funniest and best-remembered episodes. For starters, season 2 marks the show's debut in color, as well as the first time the Professor (Russell Johnson) and Mary Ann (Dawn Wells) were mentioned in the opening theme song (all of this occurs in the season opener, "Gilligan's Mother-in-Law"). But it also includes such classic episodes as "Hi Fi Gilligan" (Gilligan picks up radio signals in his mouth), "Don't Bug the Mosquitos" (faux Brit rockers land on the island), "Mine Hero" (a WWII mine washes up on the beach), "Meet The Meteor" (space debris makes the castaways age prematurely), and "The Friendly Physician" (a mad scientist's experiments cause the castaways to swap bodies), all of which have lost none of their laughs or pure entertainment value. The supplemental features, though slight, include an introduction by Johnson and series creator Sherwood Schwartz, as well as commentary by Schwartz on his favorite episode, "The Little Dictator." <I>--Paul Gaita</I>

Description

All 32 episodes are in color as the castaways continue to struggle to survive disasters--both natural and man-made--but never stop trying to find a way to escape in this wonderfully wacky comedy series. Special guest stars include Zsa Zsa Gabor as Erika Tiffany, Janos Prohaska as The Lion, and Vito Scotti as Dr. Balinkoff. Actors: Alan Hale , Jim Backus, Tina Louise, Bob Denver

Great class TV that is appropriate and enjoyable for all ages! Our family loves watching these old episodes.

5 out of 5 stars "A tale of a fateful ship...".......2007-03-13

After all these years, Gilligan's Island is still silly, outrageous and enjoyable. The second season is probably the best, too bad this show only ran for three seasons but who knew this little show would go on to delight new fans for over 40 years! This show is pure fun, one of my favorite guilty pleasures of all-time. Don't wait, get all three seasons today!

5 out of 5 stars What's to not love?.......2007-01-29

Since I have purchased seasons 3 & 4 of Gilligan's Island, my daughter has been hooked. She may not understand all that she is seeing.....(who does?)...she is glued to the show. Unfortunately there isn't many TV shows out there today that I will let her watch because of all the bad language and inappropriate subject matter. I don't have to worry with Gilligan's Island.....plus I enjoy reliving my childhood by watching them with her.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for the GI geeks.......2007-01-27

I loved watching this on TV but especiall do now, with no commercials, and no cut out portions, like they do on TV. A well made DVD. Good quality.

4 out of 5 stars Gilligans Island.......2007-01-19

The DVD was purchased for my grandaughter and having watched the series origonally I was extremely pleased it had the same slapstick comedy. Keep up the good work in making the products available for purchase.

Though Gilligan and his fellow castaways will remain forever marooned in syndication, the series' network run actually did come to an end in 1967 after a three-year run and 98 episodes. The final 30--which for Gilligan fanatics, include many of the show's best--are compiled in this three-disc set, along with input from creator Sherwood Schwartz. It's not known if Schwartz knew that the series was headed for cancellation, but he and the writers definitely appear to pour on the steam in season 3 to produce some of the series' most imaginative episodes, many of which break out of the island sets through dream sequences; these include the season kickoff, "Up at Bat" (after being bitten by a bat, Gilligan dreams of being a vampire); "Pass the Vegetables, Please" (the castaways gain extraordinary powers after eating radioactive produce); "The Producer: (Phil Silvers guests as a Hollywood director whom the castaways attempt to win over with a musical production of Hamlet); "The Invasion" (the discovery of a government briefcase leads to Gilligan dreaming about spy capers); "The Secret of Gilligan's Island" (a stone table leads to a caveman dream), and so on. A cruise ship's worth of engaging guest stars (Don Rickles, Rory Calhoun, Strother Martin) and amusing performances by the always-game cast make this final season a worthwhile addition to any Gilligan groupie's collection. And doubling its value is commentary by Schwartz on "The Producer" (arguably, one of the best episodes of the entire series), and a featurette about the show's impact on pop culture. --Paul Gaita

I have been a fan of Gilligan's Island all my life. In my opinion, the third season contains some of the series' best episodes and some of the all-time great entertainers like Rory Calhoun, Phil Silvers and Don Rickles. I would strongly recommend the DVD set to any true Gilligan's Island fan.

5 out of 5 stars Gilligan's Island The Complete Third Season.......2007-04-07

Outstanding classic TV series. A must have for all retro TV fans!

3 out of 5 stars Third Season Is the Third Best.......2007-02-22

Season 3 is the worst of the three. Although there are still some good episodes in it, there are too many dream sequences in this season for my liking. It appears as though the writers ran out of island related topics and had to resort to centering shows around strange and bizarre dreams. For example Gilligan dreams he is a vampire, a super spy, Mr. Hyde, an admiral, a cave dweller. Mrs. Howell dreams she is Cinderella. There are a few good episodes but there are too many goofy plots. The strangest show of all three seasons is the one where a professional hunter comes to the island and makes a deal with the castaways where by he promises to rescue them if Gilligan can avoid being shot and killed. This was a little disturbing and not all that funny. With that being said, Season 3 is still better than anything new you see on primetime TV today.

5 out of 5 stars Gilligan's Island.......2007-02-07

My family has had a blast watching these. Parents and kids alike get a chuckle.

The first season of <I>Have Gun--Will Travel</I> makes it easy to see why this Western series was an overnight success. Making its debut on September 14, 1957, the half-hour show ranked no. 4 in the ratings for its entire first season, which ran almost completely uninterrupted (minus a one-week preemption) until June of 1958--a punishing schedule unheard of in present-day television. (It ranked even higher in subsequent seasons, holding the no. 3 spot, behind <I>Gunsmoke</I> and <I>Wagon Train</I>.) Richard Boone was perfectly cast in the lead role of Paladin, a cultured gunslinger whose West Point education, impeccable style, literate sophistication, and distinguished Civil War service made him unique among Western heroes, and the prototype for many dashing figures to follow. Based in San Francisco's ritzy Carlton Hotel, he scans newspapers to locate trouble throughout the wild West, then cagily markets his services (via his legendary calling card, "Have Gun--Will Travel") as a hired gun, moral arbiter, voice of reason, and reluctant killer of badmen. Understanding the complexities of frontier justice, Paladin (whose full name is never revealed) could turn on those who hired him if he suspected dubious motivations. He wore black, but he traveled in an ethical gray zone.

Running about 25 minutes each, these 39 episodes are consistently good and economically plotted, since <I>Have Gun</I> boasted stellar talent on both sides of the camera. Each episode began with the memorable theme by legendary film composer Bernard Herrmann, and most of the first season was directed by Andrew V. McLaglen, who worked regularly on <I>Gunsmoke</I>, <I>Rawhide</I>, and <I>Perry Mason</I> before graduating to a prolific big-screen career. Regular writers included Gene Roddenberry (who created <I>Star Trek</I> six years later), and budding maverick Sam Peckinpah co-wrote episode #22, "The Singer." In addition to series regular Kam Tong as Paladin's Chinese-American manservant Hey Boy (a "Coolie" stereotype, but Tong handles it with dignity, especially in "Hey Boy's Revenge"), <I>Have Gun</I> offered a who's-who of 1950s and '60s guest stars, from genre stalwarts like Victor McLaglen (Andrew's father), John Carradine, Strother Martin, and R.G. Armstrong, to promising newcomers like Angie Dickinson, Warren Oates, and Charles Bronson (the last starring in "The Outlaw," one of the season's finest episodes). Each episode is accompanied by background information and guest-star profiles, and while picture quality is quite good overall, the audio quality suffers from a low-level mix with noticeable hiss from aged source materials. Fortunately, this won't prevent anyone from enjoying a first-rate TV series that thrived for another five seasons, until cancellation in 1963. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

5 out of 5 stars A rogue and a poet with a quick gun hand........2007-06-14

Let me tell you a little something. I'm a thirtysomething woman from New England, a reader and traveler who works full time in a technical field. The western genre was never a big part of my life as a child; to this day the theme song for Bonanza gives me a case of the shudders. And yet somehow this series, an overly dramatic black and white western with terrible audio quality, is a real delight to me.

Originally, I bought it because I was curious about the closing credits song: Stephen King's "Stand By Me" left an indellible impression on my mind, and the song the boys sang made me deeply curious about the series that inspired it. I put it on my wish list and contemplated it for a while; in a slow season for new releases I bought it. It sat on my shelf waiting for a long night when I was tired of reading and willing to give it a chance; a patient show, because it took a long time for me to come around. But once I started watching I couldn't stop. I've been sneaking an episode or six in every chance I could get, when I was supposed to be sleeping or eating or cleaning - Plunk in front of the TV, pop in the disk and gobble up a couple more episodes.

I have to admit that there were personal moments of "A Ha!' for me. I watched a lot of Star Trek as a kid, and realized partway into this series that Gene Rodenburry was a director; I then spotted moments and characters that struck a familiar chord. The Aramenian dancing woman is deeply reminiscent of the Orion women form the original Trek; or perhaps the other way around. The character Ella West should sing deja vu to anyone who watched Natasha Yarr in the Next Generation.

There are other cliches: the dive for the gun, the terrible fight scenes, the balsawood studio sets. It's fun for me to see where the cliches come from, as I missed them the first time around. The effects, by today's standards, are abysmial. But the characterization and intelligent writing are wonderful.

All in all I love this show. The depictions of violence are so tame by today's standards, and the hero insists on attempting to use brains and nonviolent means in every situation before resorting to a gun, so I'd feel completely comfortable loaning it to my friends with young kids. But the hero is a professional gunslinger who chases women, drinks, smokes and gambles; he's a rogue and a poet, so it's not boring for adults either.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing oldies TV series better than what's playing now.......2007-05-30

I got this for my father's birthday. He loved it, and asked me to watch with him. Now I understand why.

The lead character, Paladin, is the type of character that's almost perfect in every way. He went to Harvard, traveled the world, speaks a dozen languages, knows the finer workings on a great number of subjects, and basically knows something about everything. A Gary Stu, if you know what that term means.

He manages to rise above all of that by the grace of a singe aspect: his passion on doing right. His moral compass points straight at good and never seems to waver. Regardless of who hires him, only good will come of his work. He refuses jobs that run counter to his morals. And while he is a gun for hire, he only ever uses the gun as an absolute last resort.

I'm quite impressed with the character on the whole and would very strongly recommend this to anyone. Especially those with a love for the wild west.

We were young children when this series first aired. It was great to relive this series from the late 50's. Who couldn't like Palladin!!!

Bought for my mom, who is enjoying it a lot.

4 out of 5 stars Where's the Theme Song? .......2007-05-07

A major reason for buying this show was the theme song. But it is played only once, at the end of the first episode. What's the deal? The theme song sets the tone for the show.....what would Gilligan's Island be without the song? The Brady Bunch without the song? HGWT is the same...what happened to the music?
The show is the best.
But there should have been a warning that the music was missing.
Is the song in the next seasons' DVDs?

5 out of 5 stars You've heard of 'comfort food' ..........2007-06-13

You've heard of 'comfort food' ... well these videos are 'comfort shows' for me. I remember growing up watching Giligan's Island and the last few years, I haven't seen them in re-runs anymore. So I bought them, and put them in my DVD player and let them run all the time. I know it sounds crazy, but these shows make me feel good.

3 out of 5 stars "Gilligan" is great--but these double-sided DVD's are lousy!.......2007-06-08

Gilligan gets a "5," but these DVD's get a "1." "Gilligan" was a great show, but these double-sided DVD's are a huge disappointment in that half of the episodes don't even play. I will never buy double-sided DVD's again--they are a waste of money.

5 out of 5 stars The best of TV series.......2006-03-14

I remember i saw few episodes when i was a kid, and now i had the chance to buy my own copy which i can show it to my kids.

I will buy any other complete season whenever it is available.

4 out of 5 stars What's the deal!.......2005-12-05

I agree with the last post. What the heck is the deal here on the whole set when it costs more to buy the whole set than the individual sets. Someone needs to go back to math class! Does the box it comes in cost $20 to make??? LOL

5 out of 5 stars Gilligan's Island.......2005-10-19

I am a true fan of Gilligan's Island, even at almost 40. Every episode is terrific. One question: If I bought the whole season pack it is $90.00, but if I bought it seperately it would be $70.00, big difference. SLC
