<I>Wild Things</I> is the kind of lurid, trashy thriller that you'll either dive into with unabashed pleasure or turn away from in prudish disgust; it's entirely your choice, but we suggest the former option since it's obviously much more fun. The plot's so convoluted it's hardly worth describing, except to say that it's set in humid Florida and involves a respected high school teacher (Matt Dillon--yes, Matt Dillon as a teacher!) who is faced with accusations of rape by a student (Denise Richards, from Starship Troopers) who had been giving him the kind of attention most people would consider improper for such a "nice" young lady. Another student (Neve Campbell) raises a similar charge against the teacher, and that's when a police officer (Kevin Bacon) begins to investigate the allegations. Just when you think the movie's gone overboard with its shameless sex and absurdly twisted plot, in drops Bill Murray as an unscrupulous lawyer (of course) to spice things up with insurance scams and welcomed comic relief. As directed by John McNaughton (who has a way of making just the right moves with this kind of film noir melodrama), <I>Wild Things</I> is a bona fide guilty pleasure--the kind of movie you may be ashamed to enjoy, but what the heck, you'll enjoy it anyway. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Wild thriller.......2007-03-15
This is a sleek, erotic and full of unexpected twists thriller. The cast is young, cool and made for these roles. But apert from the obvious sex appeal which help sell this film there is a very clever and fast plot that keeps the viewer interested and guessing. It is a sort of neo-film-noir directed to the young generation and the not so young generation. It all comes together at the end credits in a manner that Agatha Christie used in her own books.
Enjoy it.
Sexy classic thriller!!!.......2007-01-27
Cool, classy, stylish...need i say more? Well, why not...
Rarely is a film worthy of 5 stars - this probably isn't but it certainly is quality.
Love this film. It's just great.
Great cast, great plot, great twist...good script
A film that has both Neve Campbell and Denise Richards in it can't be bad, especially when they have a very 'close' relationship in it. The ladies are ably assisted by Kevin Bacon and Matt Dillon who are both quality geezers.
Certainly unpredictable and well worth watching...but enough about the plot, the ladies are more important
Wild Things.......2006-11-11
The credits include significant actors, so you know the movie has to be good, right? Well, most of the movie elements are fine, except the script which is very light-weight in dialogue. Perhaps this is due to the difficult plot - more time writing to make that work than giving the actors something to say.
Worth watching just to see Bill Murray play a sleeze lawyer and Denise Richards playing herself!
Neve Campbell should act more she's terrific.......2006-08-28
Actually, the whole cast worked well together. Humid Florida wealthy trampy mom ignores daughter she in turn is manipulated by sleazy teacher, girl from the wrong side of the tracks is in on the con. This movie reminded me of "Palmetto" a little seen movie with Woody Harrilson and Elizabeth Shue. It wasen't a big hit but it was the same type of con game being played on some slippery characters. Enjoy!

For Fans of Campy Sci-Fi and Phillip K. Dick.......2007-03-29
Filmed in the Montreal area during that period of time in the 90s when it was economically advantageous to shoot movies in Quebec, Screamers is a loose adaptation of Philip K. Dick's short story "Second Variety". It is a throw-back to the days when campy sci-fi was still a marketable genre, it feels more late 80s than mid 90s. Peter Weller is seems to fit comfortably into this genre with just enough over-acting to not compromise his integrity.
Personally, I really loved the scenes that involved the screamers themselves: mechanical devices reminiscent of rats sporting razor sharp saw-blades in their heads. They are programmed to eliminate the "enemy" in this post apocalyptic setting, but, in the tradition of all great sci-fi, SOMETHING GOES TERRIBLY WRONG(spoken in classic, cinematic threateningly low voice). All to say that many will end up with severed limbs.
Definately a fun movie to watch, despite its lacking somewhat in the second act. It turns out that two of my wife's cousins were extras in the final act of the movie when dozens of "davids" come marching out of the compound. Makes the whole thing that much more enjoyable for me.
Scott
Loved it!!!.......2007-03-14
I loved this movie for it's sci-fi purity and simplicity. There's military, space, AI, mystery, suspense, nukes, drama, sexual tension, love... I'm planning to read more of the works from the writer that wrote the story the movie is based on. This is a classic sci-fi movie. Add it to your collection and get ready to watch it every 2 or 3 months.
Close to Phil Dicks vision, but not quite.......2007-02-04
I have collected books written by Philip K. Dick for as long as I can remember, including over 100 of his short stories in the original publication edtion going back to 1952. I've got all movies related to him, inluding Barjo, which is really pretty good, as an aside. Even the Valis opera on CD which is kind of strange.
Anyway, this movie, as said elsewhere, is a very good B-movie. There are no A-list actors here, mediocre special effects and some dropped threads in the story line here and there. But in general is the kind of movie I expect to be shown on a Saturday afternoon scary movie matinee.
Don't watch this expecting a high intensity movie. There are parts that are slow, but for the most part it moves along in a fairly steady pace keeping you interested in it long enough to finish your popcorn.
The ending is expected and nothing is really a surprise. Almost looks like a grad school film project, but nothing wrong with that, look at Halloween and THX 1138.
So, neither 1 nor 5 stars, but in the middle. Find it used, well worth 5 bucks.
AVOID THIS PRODUCT!!!!! NOT WIDE SCREEN!!!!.......2007-01-08
AVOID THIS PRODUCT!!!!
IT IS NOT WIDESCREEN AS ADVERTIZED!!!!
I have ordered and returned this product 3 times. It is not widescreen. There is no option to for viewing it as widescreen. Amazon has no explanation for the mistake and unfortunately they will not correct the web page. This leads to an interesting question. Why does Mr. Leach state in his review that the disk offers a widescreen option when it doesn't? Either Amazon is massively screwing up the order or he is not reviewing this actual disk from Amazon. If that's the case, he should not be providing a review on it.
WONDERFUL ADAPTATION OF DICK'S SHORT STORY 'SECOND VARIETY' GETS THE MORBID & PARANOID ATMOSPHERE DOWN COLD.......2006-10-26
FIRST OFF: ALL SCI-FI GETS THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT FROM ME
I must admit that this type of film, gritty futuristic sci-fi set on another planet, would have to be horrid for me to not like it. Nevertheless, I do believe that, objectively speaking, 'Screamers', based on the short story 'Second Variety' by Philip K. Dick, is an excellent and worthwhile film.
***---> $20 MILLION FOR A B-FILM?
It seems rather amazing that by 1995, a 20-million dollar budget would only produce a 'B film' which the critics have referred to as "budget challenged"! I do agree that more effort should have been made to create the setting for this film, but would that really have made it more effective? 'Screamers' still manages to create a rather chilling atmosphere where it feels like something horrible is about to happen, but we don't quite know what. The world of 'Screamers' seems real enough and the bleakness seems totally appropriate to the subject. Nevertheless, there is something in 'Screamers' that seems like it was filmed with the least amount of scenery, and whatever was on hand was adapted to fit the story. Maybe this is true and maybe not. In any event, the film still works and does not feel like it is suffering from a lack of anything, specifically, that a bigger budget would have bought.
***---> IN A NUTSHELL [there may be plot spoilers below]
Here we have a planet that was exploited for a new form of energy which fizzled out as it generated an immense, toxic, radioactive waste as a by-product of its production. Two factions collided over the issue and it is now 20 years later. The year is 2078 and there is little left of the planet Sirius 6B, once a real garden spot, we are told. A lone soldier comes to the alliance bunker where Marshall Joseph Hendricksson [Peter Weller] is commanding, with a message which seems to offer a peaceful solution to the war that has ravaged the planet. From here the story goes on the road, a kind of trek that we have seen in the 'Wizard of Oz'. Marshall Hendricksson departs from the bunker with one new arrival in search of his N.E.B.s counterpart to sort out the meaning of the peace offering.
--- ON THE WAY --- EXPOSITION AS WE HIKE TOWARD THE NEB's BUNKER
Everything you will ever want to know about the situation on Sirius 6B and more is delivered via a thinly-disguised expository lump. This comes in the form of Hendricksson telling the new arrival, 'Ace' [Andrew Lauer], who he has taken with him on the trek, everything WE need to know in order to better understand this rather meandering tale. On the way to meet with his NEBs counterpart, the Marshall and Ace find a little boy who appears to be orphaned, several NEBs stragglers, and an attractive black marketeer [Jennifer Rubin]. All of these people have a distinct and vital role in the story, and little is as it seems.
--- AND OF COURSE THERE ARE SCREAMERS!!!!!
These screamers are the real deal here and we never really know what is happening with them and what motivates them because the Alliance that created them, represented here by Marshall Hendricksson, doesn't know either. We do know that they are evolving and upgrading themselves in many rather scary ways and that nobody is safe as long as they are in the same universe as human beings.
And there lies the heart of the story -- the Screamers. Just what is their significance to the human race????? After you see the film you will know!

Description
From The Director Of THE CRAFT, The Screenwriter Of DIE HARD, & The Producer Of THE TERMINATOR In the mid-70s, the members of the love cult Unity Fields sought `the ultimate joining' by dousing themselves with gasoline and committing mass suicide. A young girl blown clear of the fiery explosion was the only survivor. Thirteen years later, Cynthia (Jennifer Rubin of A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3) awakens from a coma inside a psychiatric hospital with only buried memories of that horrific day. But now, her fellow patients are each being driven to their own violent suicides. Has the sect's hideously burned leader (Richard Lynch) returned to claim his final child, or is something even more depraved lurking within her BAD DREAMS? Bruce Abbott (RE-ANIMATOR), Harris Yulin (SCARFACE), E.G. Daily (THE DEVIL'S REJECTS) and Dean Cameron (SUMMER SCHOOL) co-star in this intense horror shocker directed by Andrew Fleming (THE CRAFT, DICK), co-written by Steven de Souza (DIE HARD, 48 HRS) and produced by Gale Anne Hurd (ARMAGEDDON, T2).
Customer Reviews:
Bad Dreams - good viewing!.......2007-01-25
I'm a horror buff from way, way back. And every so often I feel the need to revisit some of the movies from my scare ladden youth, and the film Bad Dreams didn't disappoint. Okay, because its the early eighties and my memory isn't what it was, I wasn't expecting much. But you know Bad Dreams stacks up pretty well against the over-the-top gore films of today. It has a plot, it has blood, it has your damsel in distress, and it has a very cute doctor. So yeah, I'm gonna stick my neck out on this one and say see it, its aged well.
P.S. My three stars is actually three and a half!
Not a Nightmare on Elm Street Rip Off........2007-01-17
I bought this movie after seeing the trailer on another Anchor Bay release, Cemetery Man. I knew I would have to buy it, just because it looked like it was right up my alley. After buying and watching it, I was very pleased. However, I have a feeling that I saw this movie a billion years ago on HBO, but just don't remember it.
As for the movie itself, well I love 80's horror movies. Which are different than horror movies, a horror movie is creepy, yet timeless and not dated. Now Bad Dreams has all the wonderful aspects of an 80's horror flick: bloods, dummies, profanity, creepy music, dark elements, questionable editing and dubious acting. The one keystone aspect missing is nudity, which is a staple in 80's horror. But in the case of Bad Dreams, I will forgive. Now is this movie the best movie in the world? No. Did the movie run a little too long? Yes, 15 minutes could have been shaved off. Is the acting top notch? No, but it isn't horrible either. In fact some scenes are pretty good. The thing about the movie that I enjoyed so much was the smoke screens it put up. It appears like it is going to be a Nightmare on Elm Street type of movie. With Richard Lynch's character being another Freddy Kruger. Now in some ways that is the case, but ultimately it isn't. The story line has a couple of twist, which is what gives this movie some character. I also liked the fact there was some focus on Borderline Personality Disorder. Having some experience with BPD, I thought it was interesting that a movie addressed it by its official name. Even though there were some liberties taken with the Disorder.
I also loved Chainsaw (I believe that was his character's name) from Summer School. His performance in Bad Dreams was great, in a B movie sort of way. I also love how the lead female characters in horror movies are always attractive. Jennifer Rubin fits the paradigm perfectly in this film. I digress in saying I love 80's horror movies. Dualism is the notion in describing these flicks, being both precarious and (unintentionally) hilarious. Bad Dreams is a reminder, for better or worse, they don't make horror movies like they use to. I personal lean towards the latter.
As for this movie being dated, I would have to say yes. The main reason was Sweet Child O' Mine by Guns N' Roses was played during the end credits, which seemed totally out of place in this movie. Also totally dating the movie eternally in the 1980's.
Bad Dreams an original film........2006-08-09
I suppose this movie would have to be classified as a horror/thriller. It has plenty of thrills and manages to keep one on the edge of his seat. Jennifer Rubin and Bruce Abbott have plenty of onscreen chemistry and both their characters' relationship can be quite touching at times, particularly at the end of the film. Richard Lynch is absolutely perfect as the David Koresh-like Harris, who leads his devout, yet very confused followers, to their flaming deaths. It's the seventies clashing with the eighties as Cynthia (Jennifer Rubin) wakes up from a thirteen year coma in a psychiatric facility she was brought to back in 1973. I won't tell you the rest, I wouldn't want to give the plot away. I'll tell you this, for an eighties flick, Bad Dreams is certainly original. I loved it and I'm sure many of you out there will enjoy this one as well. See it for yourselves, you won't be sorry.
The only decent thing about this movie is Richard Lynch in his role as Harris........2006-07-02
Watching movies like "Bad Dreams" always makes me appreciate classic horror movies like "Halloween" and "A Nightmare On Elm Street". Although "Bad Dreams" starts out like it might have some potential, this movie ultimately suffers from a poorly executed plot, bad acting (except from Richard Lynch), sorry direction and an ultimately lackluster storyline. Basically, "Bad Dreams" is about a survivor of a crazed religious cult who committed a group suicide by fire who has terrible visions of her memories from that fateful day. As the movie progresses, it appears that the religious leader, Harris, is back from the dead to get the survivor. Now, I don't mean to give everything away, but when the killer is actually revealed, the movie becomes anti-climactic and the movie loses its punch because the only good thing about this movie is Richard Lynch in his role as Harris as he is quite creepy at being the bad guy/boogeyman. However, "Bad Dreams" fails as a horror movie as the kills are not that impressive, the villain is a disappointment and the storyline fails to sustain any momentum it gained from the beginning scenes involving Harris' prowess as a horror movie villain. Quite frankly, "Bad Dreams" will not scare you or give you bad dreams unless purchasing and watching a really bad movie is what scares you.
tries for "elm street" type chills but comes across as a scooby doo plot.......2006-05-24
the tone, style, and paceing in this movie makes it look like an atemp to make an "elm street" type horror movie, but then they change gears in mid movie and take it down another path alltogether and throw the film out of wack.
a very young girl in the 70's is at the mass suicide of a cult. hurt she awakes 13 years later in a hospital for people with mental problem. soon after she wakes up she starts to see the cult leader everywhere and the people at the hospital start to kill themselves,or are they? after 10 min. you will not care because the movies is so boring. stick to elm street and skip this turkey

kind of lame and a waste of time.......2007-06-05
I got it for Alicia Silverstone. The actress who plays the male lead's girflriend does some interesting things and is rather charming.
And the main lead? The male lead? The guy's name is Elwes, I believe. I only wish the director could have asked him to wipe that dumb grin from his face. Oh yeah, fake curls (over either eye) do not make actors
(in their 30s) suddenly look to be in their 20s. This sort of thing gets to be annoying--and is witnessed (usually) in turkey flicks like this.
As I said, the only real reason to see this is Alicia Silverstone, although, to be sure, she got better looking as she got older and matured as a woman.
Got the DVD quite cheap--otherwise would have probably passed on it.
A Lolita from hell.......2007-03-29
This was Alicia Silverstone's debut film after which she went on to star in some Aerosmith videos (what red-blooded American male can ever forget seeing her and Liv Tyler in "Crazy"?) after which she got the lead in Clueless (1995) and the rest is cinematic history.
In Clueless of course she was a sweet, adorable and slightly empty-headed Valley Girl. Here she is what might be called a Lolita from hell. Director Alan Shapiro even has her do a Sue Lyon (from Kubrick's 1964 Lolita) looking-over-her-sunglasses imitation to start the film. We soon learn that she is 14 "almost 15." (Silverstone was actually 15-years-old during the filming.) She is also rich and very talented, plays a classical piano, knows the scientific names of beetles and wasps, has skipped two grades, etc. The film itself might be dubbed a kind of "Fatal Attraction" for teeny-boppers.
Cary Elwes plays Nick Eliot who is looking for some digs as the film begins. He is a writer who just got a gig with an important, trendy magazine. After nearly bumping into Adrian (Silverstone) with his car, he looks askance and sees a sign advertising a cottage for rent in back of a large house with estate. Turns out this is where Adrian lives with her parents.
Somehow this reminds me of William Holden as the writer Joe Gillis pulling into that driveway on Sunset Boulevard (1950). He should have looked in the other direction! He should have run the other way! When Little Miss Crazy gets a crush, it is a hum-dinger. Maybe Nick should have just surrendered at the start and she would have been bored with him in a couple of months at most. But unfortunately, Nick Eliot is the epitome of the clueless male. He doesn't see the danger until it is too late. He is slightly compromised because he has kissed her, he has wandered about her house when her parents haven't been at home, and worse yet he doesn't have an inkling of the strength of her passion. To be honest I felt a little sorry for her having to deal with all that rejection! I think this would have played more realistically had Adrian's part been given to an ugly little shrew in the making. But then of course the film would not have found any kind of audience.
Well, this is a familiar premise and the kind I like to see worked out and resolved--well, I like to look at Alicia. Unfortunately Alan Shapiro, who also wrote the script, has the originality of a photocopy machine and just milks the premise while mindlessly escalating the bizarro. Suffice it to say that Little Miss Crazy doesn't take no for an answer and that Nick stupidly behaves in a way that just makes his situation worse. The ending does have the virtue of being nicely ironic while suggesting the hoped-for sequel.
entertaining movie.......2006-08-15
this movie is about a 14 year old who is obsessed with a 28 year old neighbour and stalks him and doesn't everything she can to manipulate him and the people around her just to get close to him. When he doesn't give her what she wanted and tried to stay away from her, she accused him of molestation and planted evidence because she was a sicko who was not getting the attention she desperately wanted. This movies show you just how easy it is to be manipulated by people who do things for selfish reassons
The Crush.......2006-08-08
I Love this Movie its a grat show i have seen it over and over agan 10 OUT OF 10
Realistic Depiction of Romance and Adolescent Development.......2006-01-09
I thought this movie was very realistic. It confirms what I have found out in real life: that teenage girls are seductive, flirting, spiteful, jealous, lying, conniving, and Evil little creatures that will make you regret the day you were ever born.
In this movie and in real life, teenage girls often harass older men until they go crazy. They also get jealous of some guys' older girlfriends and try to kill them. (As we found out the hard way, didn't we babe? I'm so sorry for what she did to you.)
This movie was also realistic because it showed how teenage girls make shrines dedicated to the man they love, filled with candles. Believe me, I have seen many of these throughout my career as a police detective, and now as a professional private investigator. You wouldn't believe how many murders committed by rich white chicks with carousels in their attics go unreported by the media in this country.
(This can only be because of the bias of the mainstream media, which is not surprising considering that all of the media is secretely controlled by evil teenage girls who are plotting to overthrow the government and take control of the world. But I digress...)
This movie should serve as a warning for all you men out there. It is difficult, but you will just have to put up with all those teenage girls constantly throwing themselves at you. Better yet, just run away! Or be gay. Do it for your own good!
On a side note, I am really surprised that Alicia Silverstone had the courage as an actress to portray teenage girls for what they really are in this movie. She is to be commended for that.
The movie is informative, and educational. I recommend watching it with the entire family, preschoolers included.
Movie Grade: A+
I hope this review helped.

Enjoy!

Simply Remarkable.......2005-12-27
Long before there was The Matrix, before there was a Bill and Ted, Keanu Reeves starred in Permanent Record, a movie that inexplicably has gone unnoticed. Permanent Record is a wonderful, moving, touching film about how one deals with those tragedies in life that have no explanation, and no matter how much we ask Why?, we know there will never be an answer to that question.
If you have never seen this film, my recommendation would be that the first time you view it, you watch it cold without knowing anything about what is to take place. That would mean not reading this review or any of the others posted here. After you have watched the film you will understand. The film begins as if you are watching any other film about teenagers, high school and their day to day lives. The two main characters are Chris (Keanu Reeves) and David (brilliantly portrayed by Alan Boyce), who are good friends. They play in a band together for which David is writing the music. David is a straight A student whom seems to have everything going for him. He is popular, he has been accepted into a major music college, he has a very loving, caring, wonderful set of parents (played by Barry Corbin and Kathy Baker), a younger brother who looks up to and admires him and a beautiful girl friend. Yet, we begin to see little things that hint there is something wrong in David's life. The first time you watch Permanent Record, like his family and friends, you may not even notice that things are not as perfect for David as they seem. We see the signs, but we ignore them or overlook them.
It is not long until one fateful night a tragedy occurs that will forever alter the way Chris along with his friends and classmates view their lives. We are there when it happens, along with Chris, yet like Chris, we don't actually see the event occur. At first, as Chris does also, we are sure it must have been an accident. We soon find out it was not. Instead David's family and friends are only left with questions How could this happen when David seemed to have everything going for him? Why did it happen? Couldn't they have seen it coming? Shouldn't they have been able to stop it from happening? They are questions for which there will never be any answers, not for us not for them. They must come to terms with what happens, without ever understanding. In the end that is what Permanent Record is about. There are so many things that happen in life which will be beyond our understanding or reasoning. We may look back angrily when we think about it, as Chris and his classmates surely will, as they learn their own lives are changed forever.
Keanu Reeves gives an emotional depth to his character that I have never seen him bring to any film since Permanent Record. He has all the characteristics of a typical High Scool boy down, yet we are able to see the pain he is going through, and we feel it as much as he does. Alan Boyce as David, plays him with such perfection, that even when he is no longer on the screen, that we miss him along with Chris, his parents and his classmates.
The last five minutes of this film are five of the most poignant minutes I have ever experienced in any film. It is a scene that will touch deep into your heart and soul. Though we may never understand many of the tragedies that occur in life, we remember those we have lost and the things they brought to us while they were here. Then, in the end, we must move on. Sometimes there just aren't any answers.
Permanent Record with Keanu Reeves.......2005-10-09
The movie may not be Keanu's best but it touched me. It is a very young and fresh Keanu who actually impressed me with his acting skills. He did a very good performance in this flick as the teenage kid living with his divorced and very absent minded father. Mostly left to himself Keanu tries to find some substance in his life with his high school friends and especially the band he plays in.
His best friend whom he admires tremendously commits suicide before his very eyes. Keanu tries to find the answers to all the questions afterwards.
Touching.......2005-09-13
A story about a group of teens in the 80's who struggle with the suicide of their friend who seems to have it all. Keanu Reeves plays the part of his best friend who goes through a series of emotions ranging from anger to guilt. I believe Keanu's acting in this movie is one of the stepping stones to a career that can claim him the complimentary box office title that he sincerely deserves.
Brilliant little gem of a movie sadly overlooked.......2005-07-22
I agree with all the reviews. "Permanent Record" is one of those little "sleeper" gems that was little seen upon its initial release and is still sadly obscure. I am grateful that it is available on DVD. I agree with the one reviewer who is sad that the J.D. Souther's song for the film, "Wishing on Another Falling Star" is unvailable on a CD of the film's music or on any CD by Souther. It should have received an Oscar nomination for Best Song of 1988. Keanu Reeves best performance to date. And I would like to see Boyce's acting career skyrocket. He deserves a very successful career as an actor. I don't agree with the reviewer who says suicide is "selfish." This reviewer obviously does not suffer from chronic depression nor has this person ever felt real, deadly despair. Its always easy for these people to judge - because they have no clue. They are incapable of empathizing with what serious depression or despair feels like nor do they have the capacity to be able to even imagine what it might be like. When one is in the throngs of despair and are about to committ suicide or are thinking about it they don't don't stop and think, "Would this be selfish of me?" Their pain is too overwhelming, too intense for them to be "Hamlet" and carry on a clinical, objective conversation with themselves. Emotions are not logical or rational. For some people they just hurt too much to go on. They don't intellectualize on the state of their being, especially if they feel so isolated or shameful or lost to even know how to reach out for help. They just want the pain to end. They are not capable of thinking about anything else. I'm not suicidal but I know what despair and depression feel like vividly. I can understand why someone would take their own life. Depression is an illness like any other. If a loved one of mine was to die of cancer, I wouldn't say, "Oh that was so selfish of them!" I have all the compassion in the world for those who live with despair and for whatever reason are unable to have hope, are unable to see that there are ways out of the dark tunnel. Particularly in this culture where there is so much loneliness, and alienation because this culture has lost its ability to build community, to care for one another, I find the reviewer's view on suicide as being "selfish" to be a naked expression of acute naivete, and ignorance of the human condition. I'd like to know what planet they are living on. Perhaps, karma will give them a taste of what despair feels like someday and then they will get a clue.
been through it..........2004-07-08
Right before this came out, I went through a boyfriend's suicide. The movie really hit home. It really explains the feelings that those left behind feel. Sure, as I look back it is corny in the 80's way but the questions everyone had and the wonder of why is so true for the survivors.
The one thing the movie focused on is really the most important issue. Once the person has committed the suicide, they are no longer the problem. It is the recovery and coping of the survivors. A group of kids with no one to talk to or go to. Very much like it is today, 16 years later.
I would suggest that if anyone knows of someone that is thinking of suicide, make them watch the movie. Show them what their friends and family will feel once they are gone. It may be a movie but it is very close to the real life feelings we survivors feel when we lose someone we love and don't know why and feel guilt because couldn't stop it. Remember, suicide is a permenant solution to a temporary problem.
Keenu Reeves really takes the emotion and makes it real. Anyone could have played the part but he put such a realistic feel to the sorrow and anger, I really can't see anyone else in the roll. The song is beautiful and I had it at one time on cassette, now if that doesn't date me then I don't know what will. The whole movie is represents a process and the actors/actresses did a very good job of portraying it to the viewer.
The scenes in Portland and the surrounding areas are a nice change to a sound stage. I think it brings a touch of reality because it doesn't take place in LA or New York. How many normal people live outside of those 2 cities? I would say a lot and this movie shows that problems exist in all walks of life.

Customer Reviews:
Survivors unite against Freddy Krueger.......2007-02-03
New director for this third episode. The modern world is growing and we are starting to have the information highway coming into the picture. The new architecture is very striking and powerful. We come back to a girl as the center of the film, but at once that girl is living with her mother and her male guests. But also at once she is moved to a hospital where she meets a whole gang of young people who are Freddy's victims. Freddy does not try to make anyone kill the others. At first he tries to terrorize them into committing suicide. Society reacts as can be expected : the kids are calling for some attention and their dreams and suicides are nothing but the symptoms of their guilt. A junior doctor reacts positively when a psychiatrist comes into the picture, and this psychiatrist is the surviving girl of a preceding episode. This leads to a psychiatric ward in a hospital with all these kids, and group therapy. This time Freddy has a group against him, a group that can remain united, or at least the survivors can, and they can start a war against this Freddy. The film also densifies Freddy Krueger with a mother who was a medical personnel in the old psychiatric ward of the very hospital in which we are. This wing of the building was closed when this young woman was by accident left behind in the ward surrounded by all kinds of crazy criminals. She was raped and many other things and Freddy is her son. Even worse she lost her head, though not completely and could then dedicate the end of her life to religion. She became a nun. The father of the young psychiatrist who has survived Freddy was one of those who burnt Freddy to death when he was caught after kudnapping and killing twenty children. His remains had never been buried. The father will finally accept to tell where the bones are. During that time the kids and the young psychiatrist are getting into the dream to save the others who have been taken and to get rid of Freddy. They will not all come back, but they will come back after Freddy's destruction by the junior doctor burying the bones and sprinkling them with holy water before covering them with earth. It is the first time the christian theme is brought in with holy water and a crucifix, hence with a parallel to vampires. The film then is a new twist in the general fabric invented by Wes Craven and it is quite effective. We must go on in this saga to see where we are going, where we are taken to. Be sure Freddy will live forever and ever, ever after the end of each film.

Freddy really gets going.......2006-12-27
Freddy Krueger (Roberet Englund) has tracked down the last of the "Elm Street Kids" to Westin Hills, a mental asylum where all the kids are being treated for anti-social behavoir caused by their dreams (little wonder with Krueger after them). Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp returning from the original) becomes a resident at the hospital to in order to help the kids fight Freddy. But helping Freddy is the doubting thomas doctor (Creig Wesson) and their own prejudices against each other.
Easily the best of the early sequals Elm Strret 3 is actually the begining of the larger mythology of Freddy, as we are introduced to his mother Amamda, a nun who was raped by inmates years before, resulting in Freddy's birth. It also starts the trend of Freddy using the kids' weaknesses against them, like the recovering herion addict and the fantsy obsessed kids dying by their own devices. The idea of 'Elm Street Kids' seems streaching it a little, but I guess more than three sets of parents had to help kill Freddy, right? Director Chuck Russell really pulls out the stops on special effects, while some are a little hokey (though not a serious crime) the snake Freddy and pig gag really stand out.
The kids are really nice kids and are well played by the young actors, most notably a very young Patrica Arquette. I liked the kids and could relate to them and thier (real world) problems; alienation, authority figures not beleiving them, ect. This intallment also has a pre-stardom Larry Fishburne as sypathetic orderlie Max who, while he certainly dosn't beleive in Freddy, really likes the kids wants to help them. And of course there is Englund's Freddy. It is still early in the series so Freddy hasn't become a clown yet; though he's on his way. He is still dark and believably a serious threat.
This is really the start of the franchise here. While I loved part 2, this is really where Freddy became mythic. The only real problem with "Elm Street 3" was that is weas a dark fantasy-adventure, but not scary really. Oh well, that can be over looked.
I'll Show You the Horror.......2006-12-04
My dad, ever the moralist, never allowed me to watch Freddy Krueger movies as a kid. He said that they led to the discrimination against burn victims, and that he would take no part in that. So I'm in catch up mode with this series. This is the second that I've seen in the series after I watched the original a few months ago. Overall, it is a step down, though not a massive one. Nancy (Heather Langenkamp) from the original is brought in as a savior of sorts to a bunch of kids in a psych ward placed there because of "suicide" attempts. Patricia Arquette, looking surprisingly hot in her younger days, takes on the role of Kristen who is our main character here. From there everything else is pretty much predictable. Kids try not to fall asleep, they eventually do, Freddy slices and dices. Only in this chapter the goofiness factor is turned up full blast. Look, there's Freddy up in the sky playing the role of puppet master, oh and now he has turned into a TV set, and now a creepy little doll. There is also this terrible little twist that these kids gain certain powers when they fall asleep. The scene in which they come together for a group dream so that they can show off their powers couldn't have fallen any flatter for me. I am also hoping that somebody could explain to me the scene in which one of the kids turns into the "Wizard Master" and shoots a very 1980's pre-CGI green lightning bolt out of his hand to destroy a murderous wheelchair Freddy had turned loose on him. . .because I'm at a loss. To me that scene captures everything wrong with this film. Also, the less said about the scene where Freddy's skeleton comes to life the better.
But under all this kookiness there are some good messages to be found here. We, of course, get the traditional, fight your fears and believe in teamwork. But we also get the more unconventional lesson of never listen to your elders because they don't know what the hell they are talking about. Throughout this film (and the original) every decision made by a figure of authority turns out to be dead wrong. Here the only things more evil than Freddy are the clueless authority figures who serve the kids up to him with their idiocy. On the flipside we also get the kids who are punished for "Overt sexuality" (shock!). One if left for dead with Freddy after chasing after an easy, eager blond. The director, Chuck Russell, does find time for a striptease first. I guess he'll be sex on Freddy's hit list. I do wish that I could go back in time and enjoy this film for what it is. But my eyes have seen too many movies and have turned critical on me. So I know that the acting here is bad and the special effects (which are used liberally) are so horrible your jaw will drop. There is a kinetic energy at work here that makes it an easy pill to swallow. I will also admit that the silliness here does cut both ways. Most of the kills are borderline brain dead, but they are also interesting and eye-catching. Russell wasn't shy about screwing this one up, and oddly enough I admire him for that. **3/4
Don't watch the second one.......2006-12-01
For me, the second one was absolutely diabolical, and seeing as I'd just bought the seven disc set, I was angry, and reluctant to watch the rest. I was persuaded, and found myself actually enjoying Dream Warriors. It continues on a few years after the first one, and it's like the second one never happened, as there's no apparent reference to it.
Dream Warriors is made all the better for a higher budget and bringing back Heather Langenkamp. She's definitely an asset to the movies and although she doesn't appear again until the seventh movie (as herself, strangely enough), hopefully the movies will continue the same as this.
A very, very young Patricia Arquette appears in this, her first film, and thankfully she has managed to hone her acting over the years. She's laughable in this. Also look out for "Larry" Fishburne!!! Larry, good grief.
The story is basically simple: a young girl (Arquette) is put into a psychiatric ward, with others, who discover they're all dreaming about the same man. They find an understanding adult in the form of Heather, who was of course in the original. She's older, wiser, and specialising in this kinda thing. She tries to help him, but when she finds out Arquette's character can bring others into her dream, they agree to go in and tackle Freddy.
What makes this film better than the second one, is the deaths are becoming bigger and better. One girl dies being put through a TV during Critters - she dreamt of being an actress. Then there's the whole back story to Freddy. We find out his mother was raped repeatedly, and actually appears in the film - a little twist in the plot. He was also never properly buried, and needs to be buried in holy ground, and that will finally get rid of him. Obviously not enough to spawn another 4 sequels.
My suggestion is that you skip the second one, and move straight from part one to part three. Honestly, you will never know the difference. Definitely the best of the series so far. Look out for a severely phallic Freddy snake, and a very cool stop motion puppet.
not everyone has seen the movies you write reviews for.......2006-11-21

C THOMAS MAKE A FOOL OF HIMSELF...AGAIN.......2007-01-05
Brat packer C. Thomas Howell has matured as a nice looking fellow, but unfortuntely LAST LIVES is not a showcase for any acting talent the man may have.
In this one, we have parallel worlds in which a convicted killer is convinced that a bride to be in the other world is destined to be his bride. So he and two ruthless killers are transported into her world, shoot up her wedding and kidnap the unsuspecting bride. One major gimmick is that Howell is provided with life bands from the mad scientist that enable him to die and come back to life.
This isn't a bad premise but the acting and execution are just subpar. Jennifer Ruben as the heroine; Judge Reinhold as the wacky professor, and especially Billy Wirth as Malakai, the nutcase, are just terrible in their roles and the movie's low budget doesn't help either.
For diehard scifi fans only.

Customer Reviews:
An exceptionally funny parody.......2006-07-10
It's been several years since I saw this film, but it has to be one of the funniest send ups of a genre of film I have ever seen. I watched it more than once and it held up well. Much of the humor is subtle, some not so subtle, but most of it hit the mark for me.
For two years, i had this movie up my ass........2005-10-02
Overall this movie was terrible, but the christopher walken impression in the diner made my day.
i would say dont waste your time seeing this movie, but god, that one impression is so good. so good.
Plump Fiction; a Fat Failure.......2005-05-08
At it's best , cinema stands equal to any other form of visual and performing art. As a painter I greatly admire the artistic and technical skill demonstrated by the industry's finest directors. On the other hand, I am more than willing to put my brain on hold, kick back and enjoy films that have been ripped to shreds by critics.
However, once and a while a film comes along that is so poorly made, so shallow, so idiotic that even I have to say ' enough already ". Plump Fiction falls into this category. Ironically, this film has a wonderful cast. I have been a fan of Julie Brown's work for years. I loved her short lived series " Strip Mall " and I will even admit to having enjoyed " Earth Girls Are Easy ". Tommy Davidson is one of my very favorite actor/ comedians. I also admire Sandra Bernhard, Dan Castellaneta ( the voice of my personal hero and role model Homer Simpson ), as well as Paul Dinello and Colleen Camp. Sadly, no amount of great acting could possibly save this wretched, blatantly unfunny script.
This is by far the worst attempt that I have ever seen to lampoon well known films. The effort to blend send ups of " Pulp Fiction ", " Braveheart ", " Reservoir Dogs " and " Forrest Gump ", fails at every conceivable level. It is actually painful to watch these talented performs sleepwalk through this garbage. Paul Dinello seems to be visibly suffering as he struggles to bring something worthwhile to his version of John Travolta's character from " Pulp Fiction ". I can state quite honestly that I did not laugh even one time while I watched this disaster.
It is difficult to award this movie with so much as one star. Given the quality of the talent involved in this production, there is simply no excuse for this miserable failure of an end-product. This is very possibly the worst film I have ever seen. Such a waste....
This Movie Just Isn't Funny.......2004-01-07
I rented this movie expecting it to be hilarious. Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs are two of my favorite movies, and I also saw Natural Born Killers and Forrest Gump. Some of the visual scenes (such as the Reservoir Nuns receiving their identities) will cause you to smile, but the movie is plagued by a poor script, some bad actors (the actors portraying the main characters from Natural Born Killers were the only good ones) and about 95% of the jokes are just not funny. This movie was painful to watch and incredibly disappointing.
Doesn't even deserve half a star.......2002-07-05
I consider myself to have a decent sense of humor, but this "movie" left me stunned in my chair.
It's so bad that it could just not have been any worse. Not once did I laugh at the sadly attempted jokes in this movie. I have watched and enjoyed several parodies of big movies, but unfortunately this one will allways be the one I remember best - in my nightmares.
The only reason anyone should want to watch this, is if they want to enter a coma for a brief period of time.
Oh, and this is the SINGLE WORST MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN!
