5 out of 5 stars Pretty funny stuff.......2007-05-25

I was watching this movie on the Amtrak back home. My friend and I thought it was a good movie. Cute. Boys with sex on their minds, typical. I loved the music and Gene was soooo cute. I need a boy next door like that. I'll watch it again. =)

5 out of 5 stars Movie .......2007-05-08

When I received this movie it was in very good condition. The case was not damaged at all and the movie played very well.

1 out of 5 stars Kelly could not save this film!.......2007-04-16

The only memorable part of this film was Kelly Preston doing some bedroom action. The Actors look way too old to be High School Kids.
Save your Money!

5 out of 5 stars A Classic Comedy at an Awkward Time in Life (Puberty).......2007-03-18

I remember the first time watching this movie and thought to myself how corny. It was refreshing to watch it years later. As it did before and still does - make me laugh! Another great aspect of this movie is the music. I would play the movie just to listen to the music!!!

4 out of 5 stars Dating.......2007-02-16

A cute little movie that will make you laugh. It's all about the awkwardness of dating. Seeing Kelly Preston topless did hurt either.

Amazon.com essential video

Internal countercasting is a big plus in this caper comedy: where else are you going to find Benny Hill and Michael Caine in the same movie? Peter Collinson directs those two as well as Noel Coward, Raf Vallone, Rossano Brazzi, and Irene Handl in a story about the effort to steal gold bullion from the town of Turin. Screenwriter Troy Kennedy Martin eschews heist film tradition by placing more emphasis on the gang's getaway than on the complex robbery itself. The film's main claim to comic fame is a wild chase scene set against an enormous traffic jam. The rest of the movie is less memorable, but that extended action sequence is well worth the wait. --Tom Keogh</I>

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The ORIGINAL Italian Job.......2007-06-18

As always the first is always best - the new version has all the slick tricks and action but the original had acting and real action. I enjoyed every minute of the movie.
Always good to see the oldies in perspective to todays virtual world

4 out of 5 stars Snappy Action; Great Car Chases.......2007-06-12

This heist movie starts out feeling a little dated, with Michael Caine playing another so-many-birds-so-little-time Alfie-type character - in this case just released from prison and transplanted to Italy. But I was soon swept up in the spirit of the armored car robbery caper he orchestrates. And even though I'm usually bored by car chases, I found this movie's get-away sequence to be ingenious and almost thrilling. It's off and running through impossibly narrow archways, down steep staircases, over bridges, with one literal cliffhanger along the way. A great music score adds to the bounce and jounce of every hurdle that's overcome.

As an additional bonus for foreign car buffs, the DVD includes an out-take sequence with the robbers' cars and the police cars doing an extended, elaborately choreographed minuet in a marbled ballroom. The director rightly decided that this surreal episode didn't fit in with his generally realistic picture. But it's good that the dance was saved.

The DVD bonus materials are overall as interesting as the picture itself. The director's commentary is especially worthwhile, because he recorded it relatively recently, so he was able to reflect backwards and forwards over each actor's career. You get to hear "whatever became of..." Everyone knows what Michael Caine has been doing. But Peter Collinson recaps the careers of Noel Coward, Raf Vallone, Benny Hill, and others who also star in the movie.

This director commentary is like falling into convivial conversation with a master filmmaker. I only disagreed with one opinion he had about his finished picture. He said he didn't like the way Benny Hill's infatuation with LARGE women had been scripted. I think Collinson felt the character's on-screen enthusiasm, with Hill frequently managing to bury himself in some woman's abundance, was in bad taste.

But I personally found Hill's irrepressible enthusiasm rather appealing. It's as irresistible as this movie itself. I didn't see the recent re-make of "The Italian Job," but I have a hunch this original is the version to get.

5 out of 5 stars All time classic car chase!.......2007-04-02

This is the kind of movie that you see once by chance, then you have to see it again. There is so much more character development in this original version than you find in the 2003 remake. I recently bought both versions from Amazon, as they each have their own "style", but the original is from a time when there was no senseless violence, over-the-top graphics, or requisite vulgarity. A great bonus on the original DVD is the theatrical trailers, and documentatries on the making of the movie.

This is a great Sunday afternoon "fun" car movie!

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-03-20

This movie, is an incredible light humored film that is filled with great lines and action.
after watching the remake i had to see this. The cinematography is breathtaking and the cars make you want to cry when they crash. and for being a british film it is amazing

3 out of 5 stars Italian Job - Original.......2007-03-08

It was interesting. The remake is definitely more exciting. It is different than the remake and the ending keeps you hanging.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Is This A Comedy?.......2007-04-01

Yeah, it may be based on a true story. So what? That don't make it a good movie, and man oh man, it ain't good at all. Oooohhh....blue lightning striking. That's real scary stuff. Now I know Barbara Hershey can act, and she did what she could with this script, which would have been better used as a doormat. The doctors, and especially Silver, were so over the top clueless and cliche it was insulting. Tell me about your father....yeah, right. Kids were annoying, whiny things and that son was such a rube, albeit a loyal one. The theme and subject matter are strong and heavy stuff, and this could have worked. Failed miserably for me though. Worst ending for a horror flick not just of the era, but for all time. The mingling of science and horror rarely works, except the Lovecraft flicks and a few others. The students that came to her house were such dopey flops I couldn't stand it. That old guy she was sleeping with could've been her grandfather. What a joke, man. The attack and rape scenes were pretty physical, brutal and believable, though. Gotta admit that. The blue lightning ruined any authenticity, and the freezing of the creature in the end was just lame. Her friends were kind of stooges, too. The 2 stars are for the scenes when she was getting attacked and the one where she was violated while she slept. By the way, who sleeps through sex? This was a bad movie based on the story of some west coast crackpot who needed attention. Get The Exorcist or Poltergeist and forget this one. Felt I had to warn potential buyers, as all the reviews on this are positive for some inexplicable reason. Be honest and be discriminating. Worth the price if the price is just a few bucks. Would have enjoyed a scene where The Entity went after Ron Silver.

5 out of 5 stars I didn't order these for me!.......2007-03-12

I ordered these movies for a friend they are very happy with them and I was very happy with the fast shipping!

5 out of 5 stars TRUE LIFE HORROR !!!!.......2007-02-16

This story is based on a real life happening over several years. The DVD extra The Entity Files goes into the true story in great detail and, is fasinating in its own right. Barbara Hershey is superb in the role of the tortured woman and, not bad to look at either. Be warned there is graphic nudity although I believe some of it to be a rubber molded body. None the less its a thoroughly enjoyable story and not a cheesy slasher horror film! Ron silver is his usual boring self.Thank goodness hes not in it that much!

Walter Hill's colorful directorial debut has quite a cult following for its toughness and violence; it may well be his best film, in fact. Charles Bronson plays a silent street fighter in New Orleans in the '30s managed by the cool James Coburn. Jill Ireland, Strother Martin, and Michael McGuire costar in this spare existential Depression dirge. It owes a lot to its noir origins that Hill adores so much, yet there's something very fresh and vital about its subject and approach. That's really what made so many of these films from the '70s so endearing. An added bonus is the love and affection displayed by the real-life husband and wife team of Bronson and Ireland. <I>--Bill Desowitz</I>

I returned the one purchased in October 2006, because I ordered a VHS

me a credit.

I ordered a DVD last December at $7.99 plus $2.59 delivery which I

1 out of 5 stars Hard Times - full screen UGH !!! .......2006-11-04

DO NOT BUY THIS DVD ! Although I throughly enjoy this movie and the characters are as good as they get in movies...Hard Times in the "full screen" format does not do this movie the justice and appreciation it deserves.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Film.......2006-11-03

"Hard Times" is an excellent piece of work by director Walter Hill. The cast is excellent and it is one of the few good films Charles Bronson made with his wife Jill Irelend.

3 out of 5 stars Where is the special edition ? This is Bronson's finest moment.......2006-05-01

First of all, Columbia-Tristar released a WS and FS edition (2 sided disc) of the DVD on its initial release but reissue with a full screen only. So those interested in the title must search for the older release which contains the WS edition.

This is a great film, one of Bronson's best and also directorial debut of the great Walter Hill. Set in depression era New Orleans, where Bronson had to earn his dollar by "street fighting". James Coburn and Jill Ireland costar as his manager/promotor and love interest (Obviously) respectively.

I would like to give this DVD a full 5 stars, but with its lack of special features, I can only give 3 stars. A must have DVD though, the 2.0 mono sound is fine and the WS image is ok but deserved to be cleaned up a bit.

Now with all of the principal stars gone (Bronson, Coburn, Ireland), I am surprised that Columbia has yet to issue a special edition of this movie, while releasing several titles over and over (Fifth element, Leon The Professional, Jumanji, legend of Zorro, etc). Please issue a special edition, as this is more deserving movie. I don't think there is any special edition DVD of Bronson's movies. Not even the first Death Wish. I hope Hard Times will be the first in many special edition DVDs to be released. Remember, Charles Bronson is one of the biggest movie star in the world.

1 out of 5 stars The finest Bronson.......2006-04-30

The film shows the melancholy of that period. Charles Bronson's character is good with wrists, and thanks them he earn some dollars. He is honest, and considerate with his friends, especially a woman and a cat. Optimal performances are James Coburn's and Strother Martin's, too.

I like the open credit scenes, while the fine and suitable score. I point out also the rejoicing chorus, similar to Burt Lancaster in "Elmer Gantri."

I forgot to pay attention to the format, and I was disappointed when I realized the widescreen images vanished after the open credits. An edition like this should not be done ever. I threw away my copy. Buy the widescreen edition when be available, not this. I rate only one star because of the full screen.

Paul Newman is the blue-eyed "savage," a white man raised by the Indians who rejects so-called civilized society for his spiritual family, in Elmore Leonard's take on <I>Stagecoach</I>. It's not exactly <I>Grand Hotel</I> on wheels. The hypocrites, crooks, and racists Newman travels with cast him out of their polite company in the coach, then turn to him for salvation when outlaws hold up the stage and hunt them through the desert. It's hard to "like" Newman's cold, hard survivor, but you can't help but respect his cunning and his unsentimental directness. Fredric March is sweaty with corruption as a crooked Indian agent, and Richard Boone smiles his deadly charm as a lusty bad man. While this 1966 Western wears its social politics on its dusty sleeves, director Martin Ritt tempers the revisionist moral of the tale with a stripped-down ruthlessness befitting the rugged, unforgiving landscape. <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>

Description

John Russell (Paul Newman), a white man raised by a band of Arizona Apaches, is forced to confront the society he despises when he sells the boarding house his father has left him. While leaving town by stagecoach, several bigoted passengers insist he ride outside with the driver (Martin Balsam). But when outlaws leave them all stranded in the desert, Russell may be their only hope for survival! Diane Cilento, Frederic March, Richard Boone and Barbara Rush co-star in this action-packed Western classic.

5 out of 5 stars A Man by any other name..........2007-05-14

Hombre (1967)

Hombre (1967) staring Paul Newman as John Russell is one of my favorite westerns. It is based on the book by the same name written by Leonard Elmore.

In it Russell a blue-eyed white raised in part by a white man, then by the Indians, inherits a house in town.

He boards a stagecoach and tries to sit with the Whites inside, but the Whites don't want to have anything to do with him. He is asked to ride up top (kind of like sitting in the back of the bus). Later on the stagecoach is robbed by several white men and a Mexican. Russell manages to shoot one of the White men and recover the gold stolen by the Indian Agent riding inside the stagecoach. The Whites are only too glad to walk with Russell now, but wouldn't ride with him before.

*************SPOILER ALERT******************************

In The end Russell kills the banditos trailing the party and the Mexican asks with his dying breath, "What was his name"? He'd been calling him Hombre up to that point which is Spanish for Man. The Mexican thought of Russell as a Man even if the Whites did not.

5 out of 5 stars A very good movie. It is also a great example of the inverted Western........2007-03-21

In the mid to late sixties the Western was running out of steam and one of the popular fashions of the time was to invert the traditional storyline of the Indians being the bad guys and the Settlers (read Whites) being the good guys. Now, in reality, most of the better Westerns weren't that crude or binary, but it was the accepted shorthand for the genre. This movie is a pretty darn good example of the inverted type. However, given Paul Newman's especially blue eyes it is hard to accept him as the Indian. So, what they did was make him a White man raised among the Indians and who views himself and is viewed by others as if he were an actual Indian.

This is a story of racism, greed, lust, betrayal, vengeance, rivalry, violence, and cruelty. You know, all the cheerful and happy stuff of life. And the bad guys in this movie are terrific. Fredric March is supposedly a pillar of society and is shown to be more of a moral swamp. Richard Boone is honest in his villainy and brightens the movie in his confrontations. He really expects to have little trouble in getting what he is after and is frustrated by this strange hombre (he doesn't know Newman's character's name, John Russell, for most of the movie).

The movie isn't happy with one or two bad guys. It takes every character and strips them bare until the core of who they really are shows through. At least, what the fashionable fiction writing of the 1960s believed was at the core of each of us shines through.

The final confrontation is pretty grim, but heroic in its way. There is lots of good dialogue, but even better acting. Much of the film is done with facial expressions and we have to pay attention with our eyes to understand what is really going on with each of the characters.

I recommend this movie. It is very worthwhile to watch, if a bit grim. And it is a nice piece to remind us of the social politics of the 1960s. And, what the heck, it shows Paul Newman in his prime. Plus, it has Richard Boone and a bunch of other fine performances!

5 out of 5 stars Paul Newman's Ode to Self-Reliance.......2007-03-09

Some reviewers on this site have said that all the white people in this film are louts; that's not true. Unlike Dances With Wolves, where every white man other than Kevin Costner's character is a brute, a lunatic or a savage, in Hombre the characters have a great variety of virtues and faults -- admittedly, mostly faults, but they are not caricatures, and I don't see this movie as a liberal guilt trip by whites.

For example, Peter Peter Lazer as the ticket agent stands up to Cicero Grimes and enforces the rules of the stage company; that's an example of a white character in the movie showing integrity. Diane Cilento's character is frank and gritty and self-confident. She stands up to Grimes in the stagecoach, calling him on his lewd comments. It's her integrity at the end of the movie, her willingness to put her own life on the line for others, that makes Newman's character finally relent from his self-contained aloofness and face the outlaws.

Newman is generally described in these reviews as selfish and egotistical; I disagree. The scene in the bar where he clobbers a tough guy in a bar who's abusing Indians with the butt of his rifle, showed lots of courage and it was done for others who were not in a position to help themselves. (Western justice wouldn't help the Indians; they knew it, and Skip Ward and David Canary's characters knew they could get away with it.) I thought it showed a lot of guts on Russell's part. As a half-white he stood a better chance at justice; but then, he didn't rely on others to provide him with justice. That's one of my favorite scenes in the movie.

The scene in the ticket office when Richard Boone's character Cicero Grimes enters, sets the background for a number of important aspects of the characters of the people in the cast. Grimes starts off trying to bully Newman's character John Russell into giving up his ticket. Grimes licking his lips, the way a cat does when it's really ticked off and ready to explode, with the word "friend" on his lips, is incredibly intimidating. He even blows away a returning soldier, who can't stand up to him, played to a "T" by Larry Ward. Newman's character, on the other hand, seems to be enjoying it and isn't fazed by Grimes' intimidation. I wish that scene had played out a little longer -- I'd like to have seen how Russell would have eventually dealt with Grimes; but that dynamic was held off till the last scenes of the movie.

Newman was aloof in the ticket scene. He didn't reach out to help anybody else, and this sets the scene for who he is: A self-sufficient man, who assumes that everybody else can fend for themselves, too. That's why he doesn't jump all over himself to help others -- he assumes they're grownups and can take care of themselves.

Besides coming to the aid of the Indians in the bar, another scene where Newman's character reaches out to help people is when the stage is held up. On the one hand he says to the bandits that he's not a witness to anything. But as soon as he sees his chance, he grabs his rifle and starts shooting. That's another aspect to the character of John Russell -- he's ruthless with criminals. If they threaten his life -- he threatens or takes theirs. This trait was also shown when he banished Dr. Favor to the desert with no water -- after Favor attempted to leave everyone else without water. Even Dr. Favor said it was tough, but just. This trait of John Russell was also shown when Cicero Grimes came up the hill to have a palaver with the people he was holding hostage at gunpoint in the shack. Grimes in essence came up the hill under a flag of truce. None was waved, but that was the dynamic, and he assumed that the "rule" of the situation was that since he was coming to talk, nobody would harm him. But Newman's character wasn't buying into this hypocrisy. Cicero Grimes was threatening the lives of all of the people in that shack. His conversion to gentlemanly ways when it suited him was something John Russell didn't buy into. Newman's character saw his chance, and shot and seriously wounded Grimes. Boone's character Grimes understood, shown when he paid the grudging but sincere compliment "you've got a lot of hard bark on you." (Newman's character wasn't swayed by the compliment. He didn't care what other people thought of him, good or bad. He was independent outwardly and inwardly.).

Paul Newman has generally gravitated towards playing scoundrels in a lot of his movies, people with great flaws. But this role is my favorite of Newman's, of all of his movies. The message of his character that I take from the film is: be independent, be self-sufficient. People in general are namby-pamby, and his blunt self-sufficiency chases that out of the people around him; they rise to the occasion and become grownups. In this sense it is a true American movie, i.e. depicting something of the American character; or at least our mythic impression of ourselves. America over-does independence and individualism, and Hombre is a terrific example of it.

When Barbara Rush's character is staked out in the sun, her husband won't attempt to save her, and comes across as a selfish you-know-what. John Russell won't save her because he knows, as he says to the two women in the shack, that even if they give up the money, the bandits will still kill them all. He knows there is no way of saving the woman tied up in the sun, and he has decided to not attempt it. Not until, that is, Diane Cilento's character outdoes him in integrity. She offers, at significant risk to her own life, to take the money down the hill to the bandits, even though she knows how ruthless the bandits are. She wants to try to save Mrs. Favor. Newman's character can't let that happen. I don't think it's just because it's a woman showing him up. That's part of it, but I think that a careful read of his character shows that he pays his own way through life, and he abounds in integrity. John Russell can't let somebody else bail him out, and have a higher level of integrity than his own -- so he relents and walks down the hill. He does so only after protecting the financial interests of the Indians from whom the Favors stole the money -- again showing his willingness to reach out to help people. Granted, two of the instances in the movie where he extends aid to others, are helping Indians. But he did get the whites through the desert. They followed him because, as he said, "I can cut it, lady." And he did, and they survived because of him. I think these examples refute the characterizations of some reviewers that Newman's character is selfish and egotistical. Individualistic to a fault, sure; but not egotistical, and not selfish.

This is one of my top ten favorite movies, along with Gandhi, Patton, A Thousand Clowns, The Third Man, The Fallen Idol, A Man For All Seasons, and a few others (mostly good character studies of men). I've watched Hombre dozens of times, and have just bought the DVD and am waiting for it to arrive. I live a few hundred miles from where Hombre was filmed, and I've contacted the Tucson Film board to ask exactly where the Old Helvetia Mine is located, where the last scenes in the movie were filmed. I'd like to visit there. This is a great drama, and a very satisfying movie.

5 out of 5 stars Newman v. Boone: Great Western Flick, Sensitive to the Plight of the Apache.......2006-11-30

Excellent western pits the quiet, stoic returnung white Apache Newman ("Cool Hand Luke", "HUD") against the bad man Richard Boone. Newman plays a quiet anti-hero role, sensitive to the plight of the Apache but not to the white society he has suddenly returned to, and speaks more so by action. Boone (Have Gun Will Travel), in contrast, plays a loud, brutal, lustful character, and he seems to enjoy the part. The movie resembles the classic "Lifeboat" or even "Stagecoach" as the occupants of a stage attempt to survive on their limited resources while hunted by Boone and company. The widely different personalities create on the run are an interesting mix as some are subtlely evil (March) and some are bold in doing "the right thing" (Rush). The end is a dramatic showdown that seems avoidable but ultimately requires standing up to brutality, Newman of course takes center stage. This excellent conflict is supported by David Canary ("Bonanza"), Cameron Mitchell ("High Chaparral") in minor roles and dramatically by Frederick March ("The Best Years of Our Lives"), Martin Balsam ("12 Angry Men"), Diane Cilento ("Tom Jones") and Barbra Rush ("The Young Lions"). Balsam plays the rational manager of a stage line that tries to mitigate the internal and external conflicts but virtually is too good or naive to counter Boone and company. The plot builds when the main charcters share the last stage out of a sleepy dusty town starting with conflict with passengers; the intellectual, strangely well to do Indian agent (March), his prim, younger, beautiful wife (Cilento) and of course, Boone. Boone is the catalyst for the interuption of the stage and ironicaly a change of curcumstamce for all involved. In support roles, Barbara Rush is excellent as the brassy, forthright passenger, and Frank Silvera, unfortunately credited only as the Mexican bandit, is also outstanding as the respectful yet cheery amigo of Boone's. This is a pretty gritty western. Well done by Newman but this may have been Boone's best movie, "Now, you put two holes in me and I owe you."

5 out of 5 stars Not many of the serious Westerns can match the mood and authenticity of Ritt's "Hombre.", .......2006-11-08

There has been no tougher or more formidable Western heavy than Richard Boone... He was a fine, respected actor and powerful presence, one of the screen's most efficient scene-stealer...

In 'The Tall T,' Boone was Randolph Scott's intelligent, embittered adversary, smooth as a rattlesnake and twice as treacherous; in 'Man Without a Star,' he wrapped non-conforming farmers in barbed wire; in 'Way of a Gaucho,' he was a mean, sadistic Major who persecuted Rory Calhoun; and in 'Hombre' he gave Paul Newman a rough ride: 'Well, now, what do you suppose hell is gonna look like?'

Not many of the serious Westerns of the late sixties can match the mood and authenticity of Martin Ritt's 'Hombre.' It is a suspenseful Western melodrama pointing up racial bias and hypocrisy, with a plot modeled on greed, nobility, prejudice and resignation...

John Russell (Paul Newman) has no emotion (except anger) and little vitality; he's totally alienated from mankind and is 'alienating' as well... Russell is a white man raised by the Indians, who call him "Hombre," and with whom he identifies...

Choosing to isolate himself from white society, which he despises, he lives on a reservation and looks and dresses like an Indian... But he's persuaded to cut his hair and return to civilization to take over some property... He winds up on a stagecoach with white passengers, who, learning his background, force him to ride with the driver... Not quite an Indian, and banished by whites, he's the classic outcast in no man's land... Ironically, Russell is the only one capable of rescuing the passengers from bandits and guiding them back to civilization... The drama depends on whether he will accept responsibility for his fellow man...

"Hombre," which reunited Newman with the "Hud" team (director Ritt, writers Ravetch and Frank, cinematographer Howe), resembles John Ford's classic Western, "Stagecoach": several people, whose personal crises are outlined, are thrown together, and their interactions provide a social commentary on avarice, bigotry and responsibility... But in Ford's film, those deemed worthless by society reveal their inherent nobility, and only one man, the absconding banker, is bad... Here, the embezzler of Indian funds--Favor (Fredric March), is not much worse than the others... Except for Jessie (Diane Cilento), an honest, earthy woman in the Patricia Neal-Hud vein, they're all helpless, coward1y or selfish...

In this context, Russell is an inversion of the John Wayne hero... He's strong and silent in the traditional manner, but instead of being the expected virile defender of the weak, he helps the others only when his own survival is at stake... He refuses to intercede when the malevolent bandit Grimes (Richard Boone) deprives a soldier of his seat; is willing to leave the helpless passengers stranded; indifferently sends Favor out into the desert without water; and declines to rescue Favor's Indian-hating wife (Barbara Rush), left by the bandits to bake in the sun...

Even though he acts out of a justifiable outrage, Russell is not meant to be a sympathetic character: the white man's mistreatment may have made him indifferently cruel, but cruel he is, nevertheless... Perhaps to soften our attitude, the filmmakers have him suddenly abandon his disengagement at the end, and perform the traditional act to rescue Favor's wife...

Newman's performance here is unlike any of his others... His style has been stripped away to the bare essentials; to call it underplaying would be an understatement... He imparts a sense of transcendent stillness; when he acts he does so suddenly, returning immediately thereafter to his relatively immobile state... He speaks laconically, in clipped sentences, with a solemn, deliberately monotonous, almost lifeless voice... In addition, his facial expression hard1y changes; at times it approaches an infinitesimal smile, but otherwise it is unsociable, severe, bitter, or inscrutably neutral...

At first glance, it seems that Newman is hard1y acting, and some critics called him wooden... Russell's inscrutable expression is a mask to cover his ingrained hurt, and suggests a man in a constant state of meditation or deep reflection on the chaos around him... Appropriately, the film opens and closes on close-ups of his face, and throughout, our attention is directed toward the blue eyes, which are constantly watching, thinking, judging, condemning...

Newman also frequently folds his arms as if protecting or insulating himself from the world--a natural defense mechanism of someone who's suffered a great deal of pain, and a physical equivalent of his psychological introversion... This is Newman's most completely self-sufficient, isolated, and inhuman loner, and he gives a performance that bravely risks complete alienation of the audience... And that's what happens; as in "Torn Curtain," the character is ultimately non-involving... But it's an extremely interesting piece of disciplined acting...

Martin Ritt puts the whole picture together in a straight, precise layout of plots, accumulating action that holds interest up to the big scenes... Of all the sequences which stay in the mind, perhaps the most memorable is that in which the Mexican bandit (Frank Silvera) painfully congratulates Russell as a sharp shooter: 'Hey, Hombre! A compliment on your shooting. You put a hole in me.'

Description

In WATERHOLE #3, an outlaw and a reluctant hostage join together with a disgruntled army officer to carry out a daring gold robbery. Meanwhile, back in town, the sheriff has his mind on a gambler who's stolen a prize-winning horse and is just about to steal the heart of the lawman's daughter, too.

5 out of 5 stars Roger Miller at his best.......2007-02-01

A GREAT movie. Sheer fun with James Coburn at his best. Carroll O'connor gave a great performance as the sheriff. The best part of this movie is the BRILLIANT music score performed by Roger Miller.

4 out of 5 stars Mindless fun.......2006-08-27

James Coburn plays a stereotypical bad guy in this movie about a western gold robbery. Challenged in a bar to a gunfight at sundown, he walks out into the street but instead of the classical walk toward the other gunfighter, he walks around to the other side of his horse, takes the rifle out of the scabbard, sites across the saddle and shoots the gunfighter from a distance. From the body of the victim, he takes a map to stolen gold and the fun begins. The movie is actually set in a lighthearted vein, with occasional crosses into the dark side. Coburn wants the sheriff's horse, so he locks the sheriff into his own jail with no clothes and proceeds to the sheriff's place to steal the horse. This movie never heard of politically correct. The sheriff wants the gold as much as Coburn and of course there is the sheriff's daughter, who is no sure what she wants. In the background, the soundtrack has a song which talks about the "code of the west" even as every body in the movie violates it. I gave the movie 4 stars not 5, because it is not one of the greats, the plot is kind of shallow and the acting a little wooden at times, but it is a fun show.

5 out of 5 stars Not a review but a plea.......2004-10-30

Anything I could say has pretty much already been said. This is a hidden treasure. Please please, whoever has the authority to do so, please put this out in a quality DVD edition. I really can't understand why it already isn't. Sadly, James Coburn isn't around anymore to do an audio commentary. I would really like to hear from all the principals what it was like to make this movie.

5 out of 5 stars A truly great movie..........2004-06-10

I love satires like Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein etc etc and adored this movie that is a true Western satire. I own this on VHS but want to buy it on DVD. TELL the peeps who do that sort of thing !

5 out of 5 stars The Good, The Bad and The Beautiful.......2004-03-26

This 1967 film is a comedy remake of "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly". An Army gold bullion shipment is stolen. Sneaky gambler Lewton Cole (James Coburn -- "Our Man Flint") discovers a map and nearly gets shot for his discovery. Cole curiously follows the map. Sheriff Honest John Copperod (Carroll O'Connor -- "All In The Family") follows Cole seeking revenge after Cole locks Honest John naked into his own cell and steals Honest John's horse. Honest John's beautiful daughter Billie follows Cole seeking satisfaction after a romp in the hay.

Confusion follows with Cole and Honest John, Billie, the original thieves and an Army cavalry troop running in circles seeking the gold. Throughout the confusion Roger Miller vocals laud 'The Code Of The West' -- a nebulous and flexible code that bends to fit any situation.

"Waterhole #3" showcases the (IMO unexpected) worldly chemistry between James Coburn and Carroll O'Connor. But I do not consider "Waterhole #3" to be 'a man's film'. "Waterhole #3" also depicts larceny and satisfaction -- IMO both gender-neutral motivators.

5 out of 5 stars LIL' DARLINGS SOFTBALL TEAM.......2006-12-22

Unbeknownst to us, our softball team had this name, same time the movie came out, I don't know if it had anything to do with the movie, but I loved it. I certainly didn't understand the young adult theme but for whatever reason I loved Tatum O'Neal, after seeing her in Bad News Bears, and since I played ball.....you know. And I also loved Kristy as well. AND of course, I fell in love with Matt Dillion. Oh my! It wasn't until much later that I realized, "OH! that's what they were talking about..."
It's a great movie and i'm patiently waiting for it to come out on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Good Summertime movie.......2006-12-01

This movie sort-of brings back memories for anyone who watches it. It highlights different questions we all had while growing up and how we went about getting the answers. It's funny, charming and has a few suprises in it. This movie is not a waste of time and you should get something real out of watching it.

5 out of 5 stars Where's the DVD?.......2006-07-22

Seriously. I cannot believe that this movie isn't on DVD, yet! With all these people who were teens in the 80's now old enough to collect their favorite teen movies, you'd think the owners of these classic 80's teen movies would want to collect! Especially since one of the stars was recently on a reality show AND was an academy award winner.

5 out of 5 stars I agree about the songs.........2006-07-16

I also loved the original end credit song "Let Your Love Flow" and have no clue why they changed it, my guess is , and this is only speculation, is that when the whole thing about Kristy McNichol "possibly being a lesbian" came around, I think that some may of taken that song out of context in thinking that with that song, it may of suggested "something" that might of happened with the girls after the thought, with the song speaking of "love" and all, I don't know, just my guess and thoughts.. who knows, BUT it was/is a great song to have in the end credits of that movie.

5 out of 5 stars Put this out on DVD!!!!!!!.......2005-11-27

I love this movie! I would like to get it on DVD though. My VHS tapes are not faring as well as my DVD's -and this movie is definately a keeper! I love Kristy, Tatum and Matt Dillon! Great story!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Finsh To The Pusser Story.......2007-02-24

This was the final chapter of Walking Tall the life of Sheriff Buford Pusser. Bo Svensen returns to play the role of Sheriff Buford Pusser, Lurene Tuttle plays the role of Grandma Pusser, and Forrest Tucker plays the role of Grandpa Pusser. When the picture ended the last time Pusser had just finished of the last man that was involved in killing his wife. Pusser term as Sheriff is coming to an end and now he has a new challenger. Pusser looses the election and now is unemployed. He turns to buying junk cars and fixes them up to be sold. In the mean time Pusser tries to get on with the highway patrol but is ****** ****. When things get bad a movie director comes calling and wants to make a Hollywood production out of his life. Pusser agrees but he's got more problems then he realizes. I give this movie 5 weasel stars because of the suspense that keeps watching the picture and the action. You can get all three films in DVD right here on Amazon.Com

3 out of 5 stars End of the Road.......2006-09-26

The second Walking Tall ends with a notice that Sheriff Buford was killed in an auto accident. This third one picks up earlier in the story though. He is still adamant about getting the people who killed his wife and the Mob is still bent on getting the sheriff but Buford has a problem. He has lost his job as sheriff.

The job loss comes about for several reasons. In some cases, Buford is scene as having gone too far outside the legal boundaries. This happens even when his solutions make life easier for everyone, including the perpetrators. The people of his county also seem a bit jaded by continued success. Where they once cheered him, now they are not ready to support him.

The loss of his job means that Buford has to go after justice as a private citizen and he is well on his way to the poorhouse in pursuing his aims. The new sheriff is suspicious of him and is fearful that Buford might become a problem for him. It begins to look like he might have to move away with his business unfinished when he gets a lucky break.

A Hollywood producer learns of his story and wants to make a movie about him. That brings in money and a chance for achieving his goals. The mob leader with a taste for vengeance finally gets his chance and we learn the story of the end of the former Sheriff of McNairy County.

This one is better than the second but not as good as the first.

5 out of 5 stars the first Walking Tall was best but..........2004-12-14

Walking Tall - the Final Chapter has an ending that breaks my heart. VERY MOVING AND TRAGIC. Svenson does another fine job conveying integrity and a hunger for justice.

4 out of 5 stars Loved Tonja Walker too... the whole cast.......2006-04-06

I hadn't seen this film in a long time and had forgotten Tonja Walker was in it... I have been a fan of hers for a long time. This must have been one of her first movies.
Matt Dillon was believable and charming and also illicits great sympathy. Cindy was good too. A great coming of age to real love story.

4 out of 5 stars MATT DILLION IS DARLING!.......2006-02-26

Okay so this may not be THE best Matt Dillion film but you must admit he is rather darling. The film has some touching moments and some really weird ones (Lora Mae....she is TOO much!)
There were actually 2 endings to this film. One in which the character Ginny died and the one that is on this DVD. I wish they would have shown both and added a few extras. It's a worth buying to add to you Matt Dillion collection.

5 out of 5 stars Liar's Moon song title.......2005-03-02

Answer to question about a song title in the movie.
First words of song "I'll love you forever..."
Song title is "Forever" and was written by Ray Benson.
Paw Paw Music is the publisher. Located in Austin, TX.
Hope this helps.

3 out of 5 stars For Teen Girls.......2005-01-17

This is an early Matt Dillon movie. He looks like he's 17 years old. Cindy Fisher plays the sweet rich girl that falls unexplainably in love with a local poor heartthrob. Hmmm, yes, he's good to look at and Dillon is polite, but it's hard to say what quality of speech or physicality attracts Fisher. Then there are the usual difficulties of youth and thorny parents. This one has a twist that only seems to happen if the setting is the South, Texas, or Bill Clinton's hometown of Hope, AK. I won't let the main complexity out of the bag, but our star-crossed lovers have their hands full.

There's plenty here to thrill and enchant a teen girl. The plot is all melodrama, soap opera, and teen-sex stage show. There are elements of humor to relieve the relentless drama: a greased pig contest, a drinking bout, prep boy gets sick on a carnival whip, or Dillon pays for Fisher's kiss at the same carnival. These chuckles reminded me of American Pie, a later and far superior film. The drama is Rebel Without a Cause, but it's inferior to the older film. Again, this one is for Matt Dillion fans and teen girls.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting little movie.......2003-05-30

Liars Moon is a movie that never gets talked about anymore the only star I recognize is Matt Dillon but he never talks about this film anymore and all of the other actors I have never seen before. It was made in the early 80's but the film quality looks older than what the movie appears. This is such a nice little love story that is not over the top. This movie was very overlooked years ago and still is now a great story about southern romance I never knew that there was such a great story like this.
