Description

Tom Selleck stars as wealthy Chicago broker Jon Aldrich, a loving husband and father who must rush to Florida when his elderly mother becomes ill. But when his senile father (Don Ameche - winner of an Oscar® in 1986 for Best Actor In A Supporting Role in COCOON) burns down their house, Jon is forced to bring his parents home with him. Now nothing in his life — including his money-grubbing sister (Christine Ebersole) or an FBI sting that has frozen all his finances — can compare to the daily dangers of caring for his mother and father. Still, things are about to get much, much worse. Could Jon's final solution be a series of deadly `accidents' that will take care of his folks for good? Michael Murphy (PRIVATE PARTS), Wendy Crewson (THE SANTA CLAUSE) Robert Pastorelli (MURPHY BROWN) and Anne Jackson co- star in this hilarious black comedy from screenwriter Robert Klane and director Ted Kotcheff, the creators of WEEKEND AT BERNIE'S.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Funniest movies ever.......2007-05-12

This is absolutely one of the funniest movies ever made. The situations are hilarious, the actors great. I love this movie, and watch it over and over.

4 out of 5 stars funny.......2007-04-17

A little heavy on the unfortunate accidents of the main character, but still a great comedy.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious!!!!!.......2007-03-21

This movie is Tom Selleck at his commedic best! Add Don Ameche to the mix, and you have a side splitting, yet poignant, romp through the usually unfunny world of caring for a parent with alzheimers disease. As a former caregiver of such, I laughed until I cried:) What a wonderful movie!

5 out of 5 stars Folks.......2007-02-07

Ihave been waiting for this to come out on DVD forever well worth the wait.

5 out of 5 stars If you're looking for a hilarious family movie..........2007-01-15

this is definitely a movie for you. Even my teenagers laughed and laughed. The further you go into the movie, the funnier it gets. I loved this movie!

This 1954 dinosaur brings together two giants of Broadway, Ethel Merman and Irving Berlin, just as their moment was passing forever, to create one last hurrah: a celebration of the glories that were vaudeville. Still, it's hard to imagine that Broadway--or nightclub entertaining, for that matter--was ever quite this lavish and satisfying. The story centers on a married couple, the Donahues (Dan Dailey and Merman), who live on the road as vaudeville entertainers, and since they have children, begin incorporating the kids into the act. Eventually, the kids grow up to be Donald O'Connor, Mitzi Gaynor, and Johnny Ray, and they begin having interests of their own. Donald's is an ambitious showgirl (Marilyn Monroe), whose standoffish response to his romantic overtures drives him to drink. Best for its lavish, splashy production numbers built around some of the best of the Berlin songbook, including the title tune and "A Pretty Girl Is Like a Melody." <I>--Marshall Fine</I>

Description

An all-star cast that includes Ethel Merman, Dan Dailey, Marilyn Monroe, Donald O'Connor, Johnnie Ray and Mitzi Gaynor sparks this tuneful Irving Berlin musical that depicts the trials and triumphs of a veteran vaudeville family. Molly (Merman) and Terry (Dailey) Donahue start out as a duo and keep adding kids to the act until they finally become The 5 Donahues. Their busy, sometimes tumultuous lives aren't always easy, but the Donahues have plenty of love to get them through the hard times and more than enough talent to keep them on top. Highlighted by one classic Irving Berlin song after another and an array of dazzling production numbers, this upbeat, utterly delightful tale of life on the stage proves, beyond and doubt, that There's No Business Like Show Business!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Near-Classic.......2007-06-13

While "There's No Business Like Show Business" is not one of Hollywood's top musicals it's still worth watching. The story is simple and entertaining. Ethel Merman, Donald O'Connor, Dan Dailey and Mitzi Gaynor are, as usual, entertaining and fun. Though Johnnie Ray tries very hard he shows that he is a singer rather than an actor. Marilyn Monroe is, at best, adequate. While she has never been one of my favorite performers she usually does a better job than she does in his movie.

5 out of 5 stars Superior in all ways........2007-04-11

They certainly don't make 'em like them used to, and this film is a fine example. Excellent songs, actors, story line, costumes, etc. Superb all the way.

5 out of 5 stars The real star of this film!.......2006-09-05

This is a great movie with Marilyn Monroe and Ethel Merman.
However the real star of this movie is the vivacious Mitzi Gaynor! She steals every scene she is in. She is beautiful, talented, and hard to take your eyes off of!
I recommend this movie ! I also recommend " Anything Goes"
with Mitzi Gaynor. It has just been restored and the look of it is probably the best color of any DVD I own.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE VERY BEST MUSICALS EVER.......2006-05-29

it surpasses many an MGM extravagansa..... I`ve been thinking.... "What and WHO does this film miss? Judy? NO! I`m mad for Judy and will always be a fighter for her and Liza.... but THIS one may be the very best musical I`ve ever seen... If I ever produced or directed a film - this would be it.....

The musical score is out of this world as are the performances, set designs, choreography, costumes and art direction...

It`s a very CinemScoped film aaaaaaaaaaaaaand for the better of it:-)))))))

5 out of 5 stars Marilyn deserved a better script. Her musical numbers are a joy to watch........2005-12-15

Why did Marilyn accept such a limited role as Vicky after she was a full star in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) is hard to
explain.
Yet there are things in this movie that has caught my attention.
As soon as Marilyn appears as the Hat check girl named Vicky, she mentiones that she has just finished acting in the CHERRY
ORCHARD, a Chekov play. This movie was filmed 2 years before she
joined the Actor Studio. But at this time, she was receiving
acting lessons from Michael Chekhov, nephew of Anton Chekov the
Russian playwright who wrote the Cherry Orchard. One gets the
feeling that this dialogue in the film was ¨suggested¨by Marilyn
herself. It shows the intellectual side of Marilyn.
Her comic ability does not get many scenes. There's is a comic
scene in which she plays with the pronunciation of the word
AFTER, right before she sings her sing AFTER YOU GET WHAT YOU WANT YOU DON'T WANT IT.
Her best number is HEAT WAVE. Even today it does not look dated.
Her other number LAZY is ok, where she shares the number with
Mitzy Gaynor and Dan Dailey. I felt a more glamorous number
could have been selected here.
¨You'd be surprised¨¨ was a number deleted from the film, but it is found in many Marilyn Monroe CDs .¨In Donald O'Connor's song
A MAN CHASES A GIRL Marilyn provides a background voice. This
song was later recorded by Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds and
it became a hit.
Marilyn deserved a more comic role in this film. Walter Lang did
not know how to make good use of Marilyn's humorous ability. In
her next film, the SEVEN YEAR ITCH, Billy Wilder got a tremendous performance out of Marilyn.

The hardworking Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball star in the urbane and witty <I>Forever Darling</I>, a 1956 romantic comedy, made at the height of the couple's popularity as co-stars of <I>I Love Lucy</I>, about the difficulty of forging marital harmony. Arnaz plays unpretentious, visionary chemist Lorenzo "Larry" Vega, whose passion for working on a powerful chemical insecticide for the benefit of humankind means little to his wife, Susan (Ball). A creature of high society, Susan is conflicted about her destiny. Should she be concerned with acquiring a bigger house and socializing with the right people, or should she follow Larry as he takes his insecticide on a two-year field study in tropical jungles? Attempting to guide her toward the right decision is a dapper, guardian angel, who happens to take the form of James Mason because Mason is Susan's fantasy man. The script by Helen Deutsch (<I>I'll Cry Tomorrow</I>) indulges <I>I Love Lucy</I> fans with plenty of slapstick set pieces plugged into an extended camping scene. But there's also some flashy banter--Arnaz is very convincing putting well-heeled snobs in their place--and a very clever sequence in which Susan imagines herself as the heroine in a movie she happens to be watching. (A movie starring, yes, James Mason.) There's a fun, special feature in which Arnaz and Ball take time out from production on their television show to plug <I>Forever Darling</I> and reveal the secret of a truly happy marriage--and then get into a beef. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

Description

A lot of things can test a marriage, but Lorenzo and Susan Vega have unwittingly put their five-year union to the ultimate test: they go camping. And Susan's guardian angel, seen only by Susan, joins them. TV's I Love Lucy was in its fifth season when this romp gave fans more reasons to love its stars. Desi Arnaz plays Lorenzo, who heads for wide-open spaces to test his chemical company's new product. Wife Susan (Lucille Ball) goes, too. And soon we're all headed for comedy chaos built on tent-raising, forest critters, inflatable rafts and other typical elements of roughing it. There's one atypical element: the angel (James Mason) who wants to rescue their troubled union. Marriages may be made in heaven. But the details are worked out here below

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not bad for Lucille Ball............2007-05-07

Pretty good movie, and funny, but not as funny as some movies (like, the Long, Long Trailer). I thought Lucy acted confused, and not at all like the comedienne we all know and love. However, this is good clean fun, and seeing Desi as a scientist was great fun. Very funny at the end too!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie.......2006-10-29

I'm not trying to be biased or anything, as I'm a truly die-hard Lucille and Desi fan, but I thought the show was really great. It was, at the same time, romantic and innocent. I loved it. I thought it also very interesting, as the movie actually reflected Lucille and Desi's relationship in real life. For those who gave the show only one or two stars, were you actually paying attention to what they were saying? Because you have to do that in order to enjoy the movie.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful,innocent movie.......2006-03-28

This movie always makes me smile.Such nostalgia with the technicolor, shiny cars, women in dresses and men in suits.Lucy is one of my favorite comedians and she does a great job.I've never been a fan of Desi(sorry)but James Mason is absolutely dreamy.Forever Darling is bottom line just a fun movie to watch.

1 out of 5 stars ONLY FOR LUCY/DESI DIEHARDS!.......2006-02-23

This is a terrible movie. When it came out in 1956 it was a box office bomb even though both stars were at the height of their powers. Time had only added to it's mediocrity.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF A WONDERFUL PAIR OF MOVIES.......2005-06-27

I have seen both Forever, Darling and The Long, Long Trailer (in that order) and would be hard-pressed to say which one I liked most. I love the title song sung by the Ames Brothers, but to hear Desi sing it in Spanish was a delight. Other reviewers have mentioned James Mason (I loved him as Dr. Watson in Murder By Decree) but don't forget the actress who played Thurston Powell III's wife on Gilligan's Island, Natalie Schafer, playing Susan's high-society mother!! All the comedy scenes will leave you breathless (I loved it her slave-and-master routine when she and her husband's first jaunt in the rowboat ended (with her rowing) but don't lose sight of the reason for the trip. It was because their marriage was on the rocks that Susan went with her husband in hopes of fixing things between them, and it was in the end, when she told her husband it was time she started going in his direction rather than her own, that my tears came. It would have been glorious if more movies by this superb team had followed.

Entitled to inherit his deceased father's estate and title, child aristocrat Benjamin Blake (Roddy McDowall) is instead kept as a bond-servant to his villainous uncle ( George Sanders). When Blake, now a young man (Tyrone Power), is beaten for falling in love with his uncle's daughter (Frances Farmer), he escapes by ship where he learns of a pearl fortune on a South Pacific island. There, he leads an idyllic life with a native girl (Gene Tierney) until he is compelled to return home and recapture what is rightfully owed him.

4 out of 5 stars A charmingly innocent historical adventure, with a great cast of character actors (as well as Tyrone Power).......2007-05-27

If Son of Fury were the title of a paperback novel, we'd expect a bodice-ripping, heavy-breathing Regency romance. What we have is a highly professional Darryl F. Zanuck adventure of surprising innocence and charm. Everything about the movie, from the actors to the script to the cinematography, features such a high level of craftsmanship that the few corny moments pass quickly. Please note that elements of the plot are discussed.

During the reign of George III, Benjamin Blake (Tyrone Power) is thought to have been born on the wrong side of the blanket, leaving his father's rich, titled inheritance to Ben's wicked uncle, Sir Arthur Blake (George Sanders), now baronet and the master of Breetholm Manor. Benjamin as a boy (Roddy McDowell) had been raised by his kindly grandfather until Sir Arthur at last located him. Sir Arthur is taking no chances about that inheritance and turns Ben into a stable hand on the estate. But Ben, now grown into a man, hates his uncle and has eyes for his uncle's daughter, Isabel (Frances Farmer), a young woman we fear may have inherited her father's nasty ways. Ben rebels, fights Sir Arthur and is whipped, then flees and catches a ship from England. He learns from a shipmate of a South Seas island where oyster pearls practically cover the ocean floor. By trickery they escape the ship, are accepted by the natives, dive for a fortune in pearls, and Ben meets a lovely young native woman. He names her Eve (Gene Tierney). Then it's back to England to hire a lawyer, save his grandfather from debtor's prison, win a court fight to reclaim his inheritance, give Sir Arthur a beating and learn the tricky nature of Isabel. What's left for a rich young man? Well, one thing would be to turn his estates and wealth over to all those loyal workers, then show up unexpectedly at that South Seas island and run across the sand to embrace Eve.

The story, even as predictable as this, is told with such professional attention to naivety that we cheer for Ben, hiss his uncle, and even find the unlikely conclusion satisfying. Three things make this movie work as well as it does. First, is the script. The story is one set of cliches after another, yet the script doesn't wink at us or assume we're too simple-minded to notice. It treats Ben and the people he meets with matter-of-fact story-telling that doesn't dawdle over the kisses or make too big a thing over the beatings. In other words, the script keeps the story moving. Second, are the actors. Tyrone Power, in my view, often was too earnest for his own good. But here that earnestness is just right for Benjamin Blake's character. Power's handsomeness also works. At 32, he still has that youthfulness that quickly turned into maturity after his World War II years. There also are plenty of opportunities for Power to be bare-chested in this movie. It's reassuring to see a movie star with a reasonably good build who doesn't display the current style of inflatable pecs from too many visits by a personal trainer. And has there ever been so accomplished a condescending villain than George Sanders? His Sir Arthur is unprincipled, self-satisfied and dangerous. He proves he's no coward when it comes to fist-fighting. John Carradine plays Caleb Green, the sailor Benjamin joins to find pearls. Carradine was a fine actor, as lean as a green bean who all too quickly learned a good paycheck could come as easily from self-caricature as from acting. He plays a good guy here, a true friend of Ben's and a man who discovers he can be happy with what he has. There are many other memorable characters...Elsa Lancaster as a prostitute with a heart of gold, another cliché but Lancaster turns the woman into someone we hope has a future...Dudley Diggs, so ripe and forgotten now, as the lawyer Bartholomew Pratt and Benjamin's deus ex machina...Frances Farmer, beautiful and calculating, who lets us know when she's aroused by breathing through her mouth...Harry Davenport as Ben's aged grandfather, kindness itself...and Roddy McDowell as young Ben. He was one of the best of Hollywood's child actors and is completely believable here. Gene Tierney was a lovely but, in my view, limited actress. She's great to look at, though, whether diving for pearls or leading a hip-swiveling dance accompanied by drums and grunts. Third, is the production values Zanuck lavished on the film. The dollars Zanuck spent all show up on the screen, with impressive sets ranging from the elaborate Breetholm Manor, including a ballroom full of lavishly dressed aristos pointing their toes, to a desperate debtor's prison, from the courts of justice to the idyllic island paradise. The black and white cinematography is outstanding. The camera lingers over the carefully lit Gene Tierney almost as often as it does over Tyrone Power.

Son of Fury may be no classic but it is a rewarding, entertaining example of studio professionalism at its peak. The DVD transfer is just fine. There are a handful of extras which I didn't sample.

Marilyn Monroe's first bona fide starring role came in the taut, stripped-down film noir <I>Don't Bother to Knock</I>. She plays a recently institutionalized, none-too-stable babysitter, awkwardly tending a little girl in a Manhattan hotel. Richard Widmark, jilted by the songbird (Anne Bancroft) in the hotel lounge ("The female race is always cheesing up my life," he pouts), puts the make on the lonely blonde in room 809, to his regret. The picture benefits by not being a "Marilyn" movie, but just a good little thriller with, as it happens, a terrific performance by the future superstar. Monroe's childlike distraction eerily suits her rattled character, a misfit who can't distinguish her tragic past from the confusing present. Kudos to Daniel Taradash (<I>From Here to Eternity</I>), whose script contains a collection of tart slang that neatly captures the noir feel--all without leaving the boundaries of the hotel. <I>--Robert Horton</I>

Description

While baby-sitting in a hotel, a beautiful woman (Marilyn Monroe) begins a flirtation with one of the hotel's guests (Richard Widmark). Rebounding from a breakup with his girlfriend (Anne Bancroft), he's willingly seduced by the baby-sitter and ends up in bed with her. When the child wakes up and disturbs their lovemaking, the baby-sitter reveals homicidal tendencies and terrorizes them both. A frightening and provocative exploration of a murderer's mind.

4 out of 5 stars First-Class Fifties Film.......2007-05-25

Filled with familiar Hollywood character actors of the Fifties, this is a low-keyed thriller with a bit of an edge. A good film to watch on Saturday evening.

2 out of 5 stars Don't Bother to Watch- except for the stars.......2006-12-01

'Don't Bother to Knock' looks promising from the outside. What could be better than seeing Marilyn Monroe give one of her few dramatic performances? After all, she was great in 'The Misfits', decent in 'Bus Stop' and 'Niagra'. This one is good too, right?
Wrong. This film is horrible. Honestly the preview for this film (the trailer is an extra on the DVD) is so cheesy this film would have worked better as a parody. Of course, it was 1952, so I guess they didn't realize films still had a long way to go. A weak attempt to be a noir/dramatic/suspense film that just doesn't cut it. The script is weak, the characters are flat and underdeveloped, and the acting is embarassing. Although many Monroe fans may be smitten with her acting in this film, I'm not buying it. The breathy, sex goddess voice just doesn't cut it for a mentally deranged chick. Instead her portrayal comes off as a weak cross between trying to be a psycho and trying to be sexy. You could see Monroe still wanted her character to be sexually appealing (or maybe it was the producers who wanted her character to be sexually appealing) and that just doesn't work for a psychotic character. Whether or not it's a sex goddess actress playing a psychotic character doesn't matter. The line between bringing an actor's personality into a character should not be crossed, and in this case, it is. We cannot help but see Nell as 'Marilyn Monroe trying to play a psycho' instead of just 'Nell the psycho'. Monroe's attempt at drama is interesting to watch, but at times, cringeworthy. By this time, she may have perfected her ability at playing bombshells but not yet drama. It is safe to say Monroe's dramatic acting would certainly improve later on (re: 'The Misfits'). But as terrible as 'Don't Bother to Knock' is, the film should not be completely ignored, it's a good piece of memorabilia for movie fans. We get to see Monroe with darker hair and less makeup and watch as a young Anne Bancroft makes her film debut. If you must watch it, watch only for the two young actress (one a future legend, the other a future Academy Award winner) who would go on to achieve much greater things with their lives.

3 out of 5 stars Marilyn VS her personal demons.......2006-07-22

I found this film-noir(ish) B-Movie very disturbing to watch.
After having read 16 books about Marilyn,it is obvious that this role must have been very difficult for her to play.To say that Marilyn was emotionally-unbalanced is the understatement of the Year;therefore, playing such a confused character was a little too close to home for her.I would disagree with the people talking about 'good-acting';she was simply playing herself, with no pretense,no mask,so you get to see Marilyn 'au-naturel',with all her demons, and the fact that she was terrified to go insane just like her mother,grand-mother,and one of her uncles. If you fast-forward her career to a little less than 10 years later, you see the same kind of confusion in 'The Misfits',that semi-autobiographical written soon-to-be-ex-husband Arthur Miller. That man was very cruel to expose her with all her idiosyncrasies, but then again Orson Welles had done the same thing with Rita Hayworth in 'The Lady From Shangai'.Two bitter men realising that they were fighting a losing battle with Legends, and they made sure that were giving them one last kick in the ribs, before signing those divorce papers.
To get back to 'Don't Bother to Knock':a special delight is to see Anne Bancroft in her film-debut when she was still using her real family name (Italiano),before Hollywood sat back and realised what a gifted actress she was.(that took a while,Ms.Bancroft would appear in 'Gorilla at Large' 2 years later).Widmark is as good as usual, and seems to be as confused by the character Monroe plays,as he is by Marilyn-the person.
To conclude:Not a bad movie, but an upsetting experience for the true-blue Monroe fan

5 out of 5 stars Don't bother to babysit (recommended).......2005-05-06

Is that really Marylin in a film noir? Such versatility! Spectacular, unexpected plot twist and superb performance!

Movie quote: "I can't figure you out. You're silk on one side and sandpaper on the other."

When an affluent society couple staying in a large New York hotel mention to bellhop, Eddie (Elisha Cook Jr.) that they need a babysitter for their daughter, Bunny, he suggests his niece, Nell (Marilyn Monroe). Nell arrives at Room 809 and she looks neat, and clean, but there's something about her distracted manner that should ring alarm bells for any parent. Unfortunately, Mr. And Mrs. Jones float off for the evening leaving Nell in charge of Bunny while they attend a dinner in one of the hotel's dining rooms.

Lounge singer Lyn Leslie (Anne Bancroft) is performing her usual evening routine when her beau, airline pilot, Jeb Towers (Richard Widmark) arrives. Lyn has decided to break up with Jeb because he's cold, and he doesn't "have an understanding heart." Frustrated and irritated, Jeb goes back upstairs to his hotel room. Once in his room, Jeb spots Nell across the way, and on an impulse, he decides to call her and invite himself over.

The role of Nell allows Marilyn Monroe to really show her talent as an actress. She's just amazing in this role, and if you haven't seen the film, watching Monroe's facial expressions will give you new respect for her talents. Jeb imagines he's hit the jackpot when he finds this beautiful, lonely woman. When he sets eyes on Nell, he tells her, "you might have been a droopy looking job," and as far as he's concerned, he's there in a hotel room with a beautiful stranger to have a no-strings attached evening. Ironically, Jeb finds himself involved up to his neck. Loaded with great one-liners, the film grows increasingly tenser as Nell unravels before Jeb's eyes. Marilyn Monroe fans will love this film, and Widmark fans will be also pleased with his performance. Widmark does an excellent job of playing the irritated lover who wants to step on the rebound into another romance, but instead he has a pivotal experience of his lifetime--displacedhuman

Description

With John Huston directing a cast of Hollywood icons including Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe in a haunting screenplay by Arthur Miller, "The Misfits" was one of the most anticipated films of 1961--but difficult shooting locations, an unruly director, a crumbling marriage, an aging leading man, and an unstable leading lady made the behind-the-scenes story of the film's production anything but ideal. The film would turn out to be the final work of both Gable and Monroe and nearly the last appearance of Montgomery Clift. Luckily nine photographers from the renowned Magnum Agency documented this tale of loners in Reno, Nevada; with complete day-to-day access on the set, their work captured a fascinating tableau of life imitating art and vice versa. Now the stunning Magnum images and new first-person accounts from Arthur Miller, Eli Wallach, and surviving crew members illuminate the twilight moments of this fabled Hollywood production.

3 out of 5 stars Yester Year.......2007-06-08

Apparently made for television, it presents remaining POVs from this involuted crew, and raises more questions than it answers. Presentation and photography are good to excellent. Personal myths are interesting.
Definitely worth having if you are seriously interested in this "Nodal" film known as "The Misfits" I decided that I have to read the book. Much appreciated.

5 out of 5 stars Superlative Documentary On A Legendary Film.......2004-06-26

The opening shot of "Making The Misfits" is charged with evocative nostalgia for a lost era in film history and stars of legendary status that haunt our collective memory. It's a simple yet telling shot of a nearly empty drive-in theater just after sunset. On it's battered shabby screen "The Misfits" is running.
The making of John Huston's misunderstood classic is presented here with artistry and integrity. It weaves present day interviews with surviving cast, crew, and photographers with shots from the film. Some of the interviews were filmed on the old set locations or in areas very near them. Through these interviews, film clips, and the wonderful photographs of such Magnum artists as Eve Arnold the story of one of the most unusual "Hollywood" film productions unfolds. For film buffs and fans of any of the principal players this is pure gold.
"Making The Misfits" is one of the best documentaries on Hollywood and how films get made. It was wonderful to see Arthur Miller being so open and candid about a painful part of his life. He is the heart and soul of this film and fills the frame with dignity and humor. Eli Wallach is charming as he spins his memories of those days in the desert with Marilyn, Gable and Monty.
This end result of seeing this documentary is that it makes the viewer want to revisit "The Misfits" and view it with a fresh prospective.

3 out of 5 stars Not much more than old legends.......2003-07-20

Making "The Misfits" must have been amazing for film-buffs who happened to find themselves in Reno in the early '60's. Surprisingly, the people interviewed for this documentary aren't really fans at all, but relatives of those who were there, film-historians and folks who worked on the picture second-hand. Nobody seems very giddy about their memories, and they retell their old stories in a slightly dazed, distracted fashion. I did find it interesting that, near the end, most everyone reluctantly admits that the movie simply didn't work and is therefore one of the most legendary Hollywood flatliners of all time. I loved bits and pieces of "The Misfits", and anyone else with the same mixed reaction will end up wanting more depth and personality regarding the picture and why it all went awry. There are some fascinating photos displayed, making one wish he had been there too. B-

Unfairly dismissed by a number of critics, <I>Two Minute Warning</I> is an absorbing contemplation of the phenomenon of violence. Based on a novel by George LaFountaine, the story concerns an anonymous (and, until the very end, faceless) sniper perched above the scoreboard at a championship football game in Los Angeles. His lack of identity and unstated motivation is key to the film's air of cautionary fable, in which the killer's rage is one end of a continuum that includes many different kinds of violence among numerous characters: emotional withdrawal, police brutality, subtle racism, chips on various shoulders. Produced in 1976, the movie has all the hallmarks of the decade's vogue for disaster flicks: an ensemble cast, a web of story lines, and a lot of people contained in one place where something awful happens. But it is also something more: a successful exercise in plastic storytelling, a clever interweaving of a dozen discrete subplots with a mix of documentary and original action footage. The explosiveness of the football game itself becomes a refrain of ritualized mayhem in director Larry Peerce's patchwork film, but without beating us over the head with its metaphorical obviousness. <I>Two Minute Warning</I> may not be a great or classic work, but it is far more than the sum of its many parts and does leave a lasting impression. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as Black Sunday..........2007-04-20

Although "Two-Minute Warning" is still an entertaining movie about a "situation" developing, when a madman prepares to shoot people in a stadium, the movie has some holes in it.

I won't spend too many words about its transfer on DVD, which is standard, but could have been taken better care of.

The holes I mentioned before, are mainly referred to the characters involved in this movie.

Except for some very general hints on who they all are, there is practically no "in-depth" character study whatsoever.
All the characters could have been taken form the street and assembled together at random.
We know nothing about them, except for the rather obvious.

The movie at one point, even goes so far, as to almost become a training documentary, or even a promotional spot for the S.W.A.T.

We never get to truly understand who the heck the "madman" is or wants, or for this matter, what triggered him to such an action.
There is no way to either truly sympathize for his own personal ordeal that pushes him to such folly, nor to really hate him for it.

All we get of him, are very general shots form afar, or seen "through his eyes", but we can't even "hear" his thoughts that might go through his mind at that moment.

While in "Dirty Harry", Andrew Robinson, as the Scorpio Killer, made us love to hate him, for all the obvious reasons, and also because we get to "know" him, in this picture, there seems to be no need to get to know the guy and therefore, we cannot decide what to think about it all.

As with the characters played by Charlton Heston and John Cassavetes, two otherwise very talented actors, we absolutely have no true idea from what kind of a background they stem from, and therefore they are just standing there, wooden, watching and studying.

Also, even though we know that the shooter will at one point or another, take aim and shoot some people, the entire process that leads to the final moment in which it happens, is so dragged by the feet, that when it happens, no one is truly surprised nor really concerned with it anymore.

The poor Jack Klugman (the famous Oscar Madison of TVs "The Odd Couple" and "Quincy"), in one of his last roles, is totally wasted here, delivering very shallow lines and almost reprising a role, similar to the one he played in "The Odd Couple", only a bit more dramatic.

Even Martin Balsam ("The Anderson Tapes", "The Taking of Pelham One-Two-Three" and "Murder on the Orient Express"), Brock Peters, Gena Rowlands (watch her in "Gloria"), David Janssen, Walter Pidgeon and Beau Bridges don't manage to save the day in this picture.

This is not a movie I can truly recommend, except maybe, just to compare it in scope to "Black Sunday", which is by far more entertaining and original in its development.

These two pictures watched back-to-back, would make for an interesting case study on how to produce, and not to produce a good movie.

4 out of 5 stars 70's DISASTER MOVIE JUST FOR FUN !!!.......2007-04-19

Dont watch this movie looking for any deep meanings about why people act the way they do. This is an action adventure film that they used to call disaster movies in the 70's. Its fun from beginning to end ! Its a movie where you pop a bucket of popcorn , eat a candy bar ,drink a soda and loose yourself for a couple of hours! Enjoy! I did !

1 out of 5 stars Monumentally Bad Universal Disaster Movie.......2006-11-21

Based on a scan of some reviews here, they might subtitle this movie Lazarus!, or Phoenix!, since it has apparently been raised from the dead on video shelves.

This movie has been largely forgotten and seldom appears on the movie channels precisely because it is and was always seen as a shambles. Footage was borrowed from other films to fill out the production, people wanted their names taken off the picture, it suffered more than one theatrical "final cut," and when it finally was released it was alternatively funny and painful to sit through. I took another look at it for old times' sake and it is truly awful to watch.

The cast is largely out of Universal's own TV stable; the various subplots are cursory, irrelevant and unconvincing; the sniper is never more than sketched and entirely devoid of scare value; the biggest menace appears to be that the guy with a sack of small arms has made one hi-cap magazine for his Remington hunting rifle.

Nothing much other than soap opera happens for the first two acts; and when you finally get to the movie's payoff in act 3, you wait in vain for something to happen -- There's lots of extras running at the behest of some assistant director of crowd control; a relatively few "victims" fall after getting sniped (we assume, since we see not a single memorable bullet hit -- just some of the Universal stunt crew doing falls and such without so much as holes in their overalls) by this supposed disaster-movie-scale sniper threat.

Chuck Heston and John Cassavetes do some running, ladder-climbing, grimacing and manly shouting to no effect; and a few of the TV actors get their personal problems sorted out in corny fashion just before the end credits. Even the ending seems pasted together from outtakes. And, by the way, the entire movie's soundtrack is memorably terrible, even grating.

The sniper's half-hearted spree is thoroughly disappointing -- compacted into a few badly timed moments at the tail end of the decidedly unspectacular, anticlimactic production. Essentially, the movie promises a sniper rampage at the finish, but delivers something faceless and insipid, cobbled together by some scapegoat editor from almost nothing at all.

This may be the worst disaster movie ever made, certainly the worst by a Hollywood major motion picture company. You may even throw your DVD away after you've seen this once.

4 out of 5 stars Ok but not great 70's Thriller.......2005-09-25

I actually saw this movie at the theater in 1976. I thought it was an OK movie. It's about a lone sniper perched up in a tower shooting at anyone and everyone at a football game with 91,000 spectatators. Until now I never got to see the original again except for the edited and new scenes added, TV version because the original was not available for sale or rent. The scenes where some of the SWAT men get shot in the head is about the most realistic I've ever seen. I won't get into the gore of that in itself but let me tell you it does look real. One reason for this I think is because of the special effects man - Albert Whitlock. Ever heard of him? He did the effects for the kennel scene in the 82 version of The Thing. The movie can be very irritating after the football game gets started. They show a 10 or 15 second scene of the game and then a few seconds of dialogue between the characters. This goes on back and forth for a good hour of the movie. You can't get into the ball game or the plot with this irritating switching going on. I know they wanted us to "feel" the game but this was overkill. The dialogue is a little odd at times but what do you expect with Charlton Heston and John Cassavettes? The scenes when the sniper starts shooting are the best parts and almost makes up for the other shortcomings. At the end, they corner the sniper up the ladder, old Chuck lets him have it with about 8 shots, and the sniper falls 30 feet onto the cement. They handcuff him, Old Chuck starts shaking him violently and asking him repeatedly "Who sent you, where did you get the gun, you're dying you miserable SOB, so tell me who sent you" PRICELESS!!! I purchased this to add to my growing collection of 70's thrillers.

2 out of 5 stars A TEDIOUS TWO HOURS.......2005-04-11

Filmed in 1976, at the closing of the 70s affection for disaster films, TWO MINUTE WARNING never achieves the goal of any good disaster flick: sure you need your big stars in peril, and a tense and involving script. This movie unfortunately falls short in the script department: we never know who the sniper is or why he's doing what he's doing; why does he wait so long to start shooting, and why is Charlton Heston acting like he has a batch of hemorrhoids? The pacing is too tedious and by the time we get some action at the end, it goes by so fast and is staged so haphazardly, it doesn't have much of an impact. There are a lot of good actors wasted in this movie: Gena Rowlands as the floozy live in of car salesman David Janssen; Martin Balsam as the colosseum manager; John Cassavetes as the SWAT leader; Jack Klugman as the stereotypical gambler who might end up dead if LA doesn't win. We also get mediocrity from people like Joe Kapp, Marilyn Hassett, Mitchell Ryan, David Groh, and Walter Pidgeon as a pickpocket of all things. If screenwriter Edward Hume is trying to make a statement about our penchant for violence, he doesn't deliver it too well, and the whole movie looks like a made for TV miniseries without much to recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Not as awful as I'd remembered it.......2006-03-11

This was the first Marx Brothers movie I ever saw, and because of that, for quite some time I had the wrong impression of them, judging them by this pale weak mediocre movie. Thankfully, in the years since I've become familiar with their other 12 films and have realised that what I first saw was not at all representative of their true talents, and the reason why 'Love Happy' is so weak and unrepresentative. If someone goes into the viewing experience expecting a Marx Brothers movie, s/he'll likely be as disappointed and turned off as I was, but if one knows that it's essentially a solo vehicle for Harpo, a project in which his brothers just happen to star also, one will probably feel more kindly towards it.

I get the feeling that if this had stayed Harpo's solo project, and his brothers hadn't been roped into appearing as well since the studio thought it would never sell otherwise, it could have been at least a halfway decent and fun little movie. It might not have been a great movie, but it also wouldn't have fallen as flat as the end result ended up doing. I feel bad for him, knowing how long he'd wanted to do a solo film and how much this project meant to him, only to have it fail so miserably, so much so he never even mentioned the film in his memoirs. And the scenes where he appears alone are mostly quite good and funny, one last glimpse of the mischievous sprite, a really good screen farewell (not counting 'The Story of Mankind'). Although it is a bit disconcerting to see some of the closeups of him, where the illusion of this ageless clown gives way to the realisation that he was in his early sixties at the time and no longer as (relatively) young as he'd been at the peak of their career. Although appearing older didn't really hurt Groucho--he just went from a dirty young man to a dirty old man. He didn't really serve much of a purpose in this film, though, although he's as great as ever in the scenes he does get. (I've heard it mentioned that the wackier his name his, the funnier and wackier the film will be. Here his name is Sam Grunion, and this film is even worse than 'Room Service,' where his name was Gordon Miller.)

The major problem with this movie isn't really that the three brothers never get an entire scene together (though it does seem wasteful to have them all in the same movie yet never put them all together at the same time), but that it's just not consistent. Again, if this had remained Harpo's solo film, there probably wouldn't have been so many needless subplots or storylines that we never see really tied up or ended satisfactorily. The film is also marred by too many musical numbers, something that also hurt many of their post-Paramount films. They contribute nothing to the storyline, although I suppose that a song like "Who Stole That Jam?" isn't quite as nightmare-enducing as "The Tenement Symphony." We also have the requisite pseudo-Zeppo and the romantic subplot, although at least the pseudo-Zeppo in this picture isn't as actively annoying or nauseating as the ones in 'At the Circus' or 'The Big Store.' Even so, the viewer never really feels connected to these secondary characters, because unlike the romantic couples in 'A Night at the Opera' and 'A Day at the Races,' they're not really fully integrated into the plot surrounding the brothers, while at the same time they take up too much of the plot. Most people don't watch the Marx Brothers' movies because they want to see secondary characters taking up all the action! And there are times when one just feels like they're too old to still be doing this anymore, because it's just getting silly for men who are in their late fifties and early sixties to still be going on like this and doing their old act. A particularly vivid example is the scene where Harpo is miming to Chico that Maggie is in trouble. The pantomime scene in ADATR was funny and original, and the one in 'A Night in Casablanca' wasn't quite as funny or fresh, but it seemed right since there were so many scenes and gags in that picture hearkening back to things from their earlier films, like a poignant summing up of their entire career. Here it just goes on way too long, and gets extremely embarrassing and painful to watch. Now I understand why some people feel that the pantomime scene in ADATR marked the end of Harpo as a character who didn't talk and the beginning of him as one who couldn't talk.

Even so, in spite of the problems, there are enough funny scenes and gags for this movie to not be a complete waste. It's still the weakest of their movies, but even a film where they never appear together at the same time still has some of that old magic and is better than much of what passes for comedy today. Just don't let it be your first Marx Brothers movie.

3 out of 5 stars Harpo, Chico and barely Groucho.......2005-08-10

Though this was not the last time the Marx Brothers would appear together, it was their final collaboration on the big screen. LOVE HAPPY is essentially a Harpo film with Chico doing his best to keep pace. Groucho's brief segments could probably have been cut from the film without disturbing the story.

LOVE HAPPY combines two plots. The first is about group of struggling young actors laboring to assemble a stage show -- somewhat similar to the ROOM SERVICE's storyline. The subplot involves a band of jewel smugglers whose contraband diamonds mistakenly end up in the theater.

Harpo, whose character also goes by the name of Harpo in the story, is the troupe's scavenger. Chico also wanders into the theater in search of a job. Yes, Harpo plays the harp and Chico tickles the piano keys. In fact, the movie is based on a story created by Harpo Marx.

What about Groucho, you ask? Groucho Marx originally did not want much more than a cameo role in this movie. The producer felt that a Marx Brothers movie with Groucho would have better box office draw than a Harpo and Chico film. By the late 1940's, Groucho put his Marx Brothers days behind him. It did not really matter anyway. Wise-cracking Groucho the character was inseparable from Groucho the actor. Groucho kept his distance from film because he believed that radio and television broadcast was the future of entertainment. Despite his reluctance, Groucho was convinced to contribute a handful of scenes, including 45 seconds with Marilyn Monroe, and supply occasional narration to the film. Indeed, the three Marx Brothers do not appear together until the chase scene at the conclusion of the film.

Despite Groucho's demand for higher salary in order to appear in the film, he was paid approximately half of what he was used to receiving for a movie. Remember that at this period in Groucho's career, he was involved in the wildly successful radio -- and later television -- quiz show, "You Bet Your Life." Money was rolling into Groucho's bank account without having to endure lengthy film shoots. The success of his radio program only served to reinforce Groucho's postion that his motion picture days were over.

We also see a slightly changed Groucho in LOVE HAPPY. Gone are the grease painted eyebrows and exaggerated mustache of earlier years. Groucho's conservatively trimmed mustache was for real. Groucho's hair had also thinned considerably since A NIGHT IN CASABLANCA. Abandonment of grease painted eyebrows only served to make Groucho look older.

It is fitting that LOVE HAPPY was the finale for the Marx Brothers. In comparing LOVE HAPPY to earlier Marx Brothers films, Harpo and Chico are out of place. In the early films, particularly those completed at Paramount's Long Island studios, the zany Marx Brothers did not appear unusual in a setting where everyone was somewhat looney anyway. The Paramount Marx Brothers films were the Leslie Nielsen NAKED GUNs of their day. In their later films at RKO and then MGM, the Marx Brothers remained zany, but the world around them took on a more serious tone. By the time of A NIGHT IN CASABLANCA, the bad guys were actually villainous. The romantic subplot was believable. Life, liberty, and property hung in the balance. It became more difficult to accept that the three Marxes could be on the loose in society.

Accelerating the end of the Marx Brothers era, well before LOVE HAPPY, was that Margaret Dumount, Groucho's foil for years, retired. Additionally, handsome Zeppo Marx left the team at the conclusion of their Paramount films. In the early films, Zeppo almost always played the romantic lead. In subsequent films another actor, normally a crooner, played the part of the handsome boyfriend lead in a romantic subplot that was very removed from the Marx comedy. In watching the later films, I am tempted to skip the non-Marx musical numbers and dance routines. It is like watching two separate films cobbled together with only a thread of story continuity.

In LOVE HAPPY, Harpo and Chico are as out of place in this film as Buster Keaton is in the surfer movies of the 1960s. This was also very evident in one of Groucho's 1947 solo attempts. COPACABANA was essentially a Marx Brothers movie without the Marx Brothers. In COPACABANA, Groucho's antics were equally out of place in an otherwise normal world. Though it is great to see them together again in LOVE HAPPY, it is also sad if you compare this film their early motion pictures.

The rooftop ending of the LOVE HAPPY is novel, though it is not what was originally scripted. The film company ran out of money and solicited commercial sponsorship from companies. Thus explains the rooftop chase past lighted billboards.

The current DVD release is very high quality. Prior to buying a DVD copy of LOVE HAPPY, I had not seen the film in 30 years. It was good to see it again. Despite the criticisms I have leveled at the movie, I recommend you complete your Marx Brothers DVD collection with this picture. Unfortunately the DVD contains no special features. Also, for Marilyn Monroe fans, the cover of the DVD is slightly misleading. Groucho and Marilyn appear on the DVD cover. It is all about marketing as Monroe appears only briefly in the film and Groucho has much less camera time than Harpo or Chico.

3 out of 5 stars Harpo's Only Starring Film.......2004-12-22

Released in 1950 after a troubled production history, "Love Happy" should be viewed as a showcase for the talents of Harpo Marx. On that level, it's an enjoyable but uneven film. Harpo's attempt at Chaplinesque pathos is fascinating -- if not entirely successful. However, the rooftop chase is quite inventive and Groucho (in a brief role for box-office purposes) has a memorable encounter with Marilyn Monroe. "Love Happy" is not a classic, but it's more enjoyable (and less painful) to watch than "At the Circus" and "The Big Store." After years of second-generation prints, the DVD features an excellent 35mm pre-release print that is six minutes longer than the 85-minute theatrical version. Groucho's narration now makes more sense and includes some Robert Benchley-inspired commentary. Along the way, there are occasional gags with Harpo and Chico that the Hays Office deemed inappropriate for the official release. Despite a few continuity errors, the pre-release print of "Love Happy" is superior to the finished product. Marxists rejoice!

3 out of 5 stars The Marxes' Finale is Really Harpo's Show..........2004-12-06

"Love Happy" is remembered, primarily, as the last "Official" Marx Brothers film (they would all appear in brief vignettes in "The Story of Mankind", seven years later, but not as a team), but if the film were a baseball statistic, it would have an asterik (*), because it truly isn't a showcase of the brothers, together, but a comedy starring Harpo, with Chico in a supporting role, and Groucho doing narration, and making brief appearances, occasionally.

As a comedy, "Love Happy" is so-so, with Harpo providing some genuine laughs, particularly during an interrogation scene with villains Raymond Burr, Ilona Massey, Eric Blore, and Bruce Gordon, and in the rooftop finale, with Harpo offering the same kind of outrageous physical humor that he had demonstrated in the classic Paramount and MGM comedies. But the rest of the plot, while mildly entertaining, is simply a musical variation of "Room Service", as an impoverished group of performers (headed by Paul Valentine and future star Vera-Ellen) struggle to put on a Broadway musical, 'spiced' up with a stolen jewelry subplot that isn't that interesting.

The back story of the film is possibly more entertaining than the movie, itself; Harpo had wanted to make a solo film throughout the forties, and had tinkered on the script for several years, while soliciting financial backing for the project. Chico, meanwhile, was running up huge gambling debts, as was often the case (while a brilliant card player, he was a notoriously bad gambler), and just as the Marxes had made "A Night in Casablanca", in 1946, to pay off his debts at that time, Harpo brought him into "Love Happy" to do the same. Unfortunately, the end of the decade was a depressed time for film making (with the studios forced to give up their lucrative theater chains, and television making inroads into the ticket-buying public), and backers would only fund the project if all three brothers would appear in the movie.

Groucho, by now a genuine TV star, thanks to the "You Bet Your Life" quiz show, hated the script of "Love Happy", and had little desire to co-star in the film. He was, however, loyal to his brothers, and finally reached a compromise; he would only appear briefly, would not have to wear his trademark greasepaint eyebrows and mustache, and would have final approval of his dialog and the performers working with him. He could honestly say he helped 'discover' Marilyn Monroe, at an open audition (watching two other starlets walk across a stage, followed by Marilyn, when asked for his pick for a small role, he raised his eyebrows and quipped, "You're kidding, right?")

As Universal and Warner Brothers have now released two wonderful boxed collections of all of the Marx Brothers' other feature films, this edition of "Love Happy" is essential, to complete the filmography of the classic team. But be warned: "Love Happy" is no "Night at the Opera", or "Duck Soup"!

4 out of 5 stars What a find!.......2004-12-03

I'm a life long Marx Brothers fanatic. I've seen Love Happy more than 25 times during that span. Now I feel as though I'm seeing for the very first time. Apparently, there are 6 minutes in this version that have been missing from every print I've seen previously, and it turns out that this 6 minutes is essential. I always thought that Love Happy was a choppy mess of a film (although I always preferred it to Go West, and Room Service....sorry), but now, with this pristine print that has obviously been struck from the original negative, it is a smooth, funny, and very entertaining romp. The print makes it look like a bigger budgeted film, and the added footage makes it a far nicer ride. The film itself is not prime Marx Bros., but I think it is a much better film than the print that has been circulating for years. You'll just have to see for yourself. I am flabergasted that this release hasn't been more touted because, in my opinion, it is a major find.

Now how about a clean copy of Horsefeathers????

1 out of 5 stars Terrible.......2006-02-20

I collect werewolf movies and own over 15 of them. Darkwolf is by far the worst I own. Do not buy this movie.

3 out of 5 stars just average and nothing more.......2006-01-29

This movie was just as average movie but it could, if they put more money into it(it showed that little money was put into it), be a better movie.

The movie is a low budget movie(no surprise here) and the movie starts out at a strip club. that's a plus in my book, and breast flashing is happening within the frst few minutes. WOW! what a great way to take your mind off a mediocre movie.

Now, there some parts in the movie that can be scary but who...who will be scared of the werewolf? IT's a suit for crying out loud. Atl east tht's what it looked like. i was expecting to the see the zipper in the back. SO, that obviously is not a plus, unless you seeing a fake werewolf in a horror movie. SCARY!!

Well, it is good to know that "darkwolf" makes fun of its self, which wouldn't have been hard to do anyway. There are many things that they do like: plastic guns(they thought you wouldn't notice in that scene),and CRAP ugly dialogue. Who wrote this? This really held the actors in this movie from breaking out.

The nudity is great but it is just trying for to forget how bad it is and see skin. Well, it didn't work.

Now on to the acting: Samaire Armstrong was great. This was her first major role and she did a great job ,dispite god-awful dialouge. So, i think yoo can expect alot of things out of her(STAY Alive, Just my luck , and It's a boy girl thing-all coming out in 2006). can you say future star?Kane hoddler really had an average performance but i can say one thing: he some pecs of steel. Not really much t o ay onthe acting besides that.

The audio is on'e of the movie's highlights. It got a little repititve but the music itself was great and plenty of it.

SO...... would i watch this movie again? likely not. Even with the above average acting of samaire armstrong and hodder, the movie was jsut that:average and that's not good enough for me. So out of a ten i would give this a ..... 6/10 overall
8/10music
4/10money's worth

most of these actors you likely won't hear of again except samaire Armstrong. She has appeared on the oc etc. So, she's really the only main actress/actor that will(it seems) go on to do great things, just by seeing this. Just pick some better rolesnextime(which she did-look above on acting part of review).

That's all folks.

must tell you that no matter a full moon, half moon,
quarter moon, or no moon at all, please avoid the
flick "Darkwolf" for many moons to come. What a joke.
What a silly, stupid, insult to one's intelligence.
The script could have been written by my dog
Stan...and even then, I give him the benefit of the
doubt to come up with something much more canine.

Let's put it this way. Have you ever seen a film that
contained people that irritated you so much, you
simply didn't give a ^&^%* if they got blown away? I
was hoping the entire cast got mulched by Mr. Wolf
less that 30 minutes into this loser. Go "Darkwolf".
Take a few chucks out of this cast, its director,
producer, writer and editors as quickly as
possible...and don't wait until the next full moon.

"Darkwolf" is an insult to motion pictures. More so,
it is an insult to such credible werewolf classics as
"The Wolf Man", "Wolfen" and "The Howling", not to
mention the tongue-in-cheek horror classic "An
American Werewolf in London".

Need I say more? "Darkwolf" has no bite. It's claws
and fangs have been chiselled to oblivion. The box
claims this flick to be "Half Man. Half Wolf. Pure
Evil." In reality it is Half/Whole Stupid. Half/Whole
Worthless. ...and...Pure ^%&*!

Get my drift? At midnight...as we turn another page
and the new year unfolds...I promise you you will
enjoy reruns of every episode of "Mary Hartman, Mary
Hartman", much more than "Darkwolf".

I'm off to watch yet another New Year's flick before
dawn. I need to make amends to Lon Chaney, Jr. before
midnight.

Bottom line, it was a film you didn't really care
"where" the "wolf" came from, or where the werewolf
was going. Pitiful...embarrassing..."I've seen the
bad moon rising" but this one makes me wish it would
set!

1 out of 5 stars The worst werewolf movie ever made.......2005-10-13

I would've given this film 0 Stars if it would have let me. I've seen every werewolf movie from Naschy's Mexican lycanthropic romps to every installation of the Howling and I have NEVER seen a worse werewolf movie. Anyone who liked the special effects in this one would be impressed with the graphics from old Atari videogames -- seriously, it's that bad. And acting? Give oscars to the cast from Plan 9 from Outer Space and attack of the Killer Tomatoes compared with the performances in this piece of celluloid trash. No..it's not even good enough to be in the same category as trash. Let's see what else, oh yeah a plot? Nope, none to speak of here. The sex and nudity is the only reason I even finished it. Do yourself a favor and avoid this flick like rabies, or you'll find yourself wishing you had the last hour and a half of your life back.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie for all audiences.......2006-11-23

I don't own this film - yet - but remember seeing it with a group of friends back in the 70's. When the movie was over, no one said a word for at least 15 minutes. I was unable to speak as I had a lump in my throat and knew if I tried to speak I would be crying.

This movie is about a beautiful young woman who had everything going for her when suddenly it was all taken from her leaving her a quadrapegic. This movie is full of love, laughter, anguish, sadness and finally hope as Jill works through anger, despair, rejection of friends, frustration and finally acceptance that her life still has fullness and meaning.

My Mother suffered a stoke which has left her paralyzed and discouraged. I want her to see this movie as I know she will identify with it and be encouraged. They don't make movies like this anymore. You can't go wrong ordering this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Please release this as a DVD.......2006-02-10

I can vividly remember seeing this movie when I was in my late teens and it was extremely moving. The fact that it was actually based on a true life story made it tragic and yet so inspirational. As I now reach my 50's I would love to own it but want a DVD. Who can persuade the distributors to release it on DVD???

The other day my daughter came home from working with a story about seeing a boy she knew from high school who had been in a car accident and who is now struggling to function. He asked her on a date and she started crying. I told her she needed to watch "The Other Side of the Mountain." The other reviewers are right on - where is the DVD?
