Lawrence Kasdan's 1983 big-budget variation on John Sayles's The Return of the Secaucus Seven finds a cluster of old college radicals--who have since gone on to sundry professions and various degrees of materialism--reuniting over the death of a friend. Both playful and thoughtful, the film represents Kasdan (Body Heat) at his most astute. The attractive cast meshes perfectly into a group of characters for which a former closeness is out of synch with their current lives, yet their warmth is enviable and inviting. The script may be a bit too glib, with many one-liners, but it is still a perfectly designed story with telling irony and no little passion. --Tom Keogh

All time best!.......2007-05-14
I first saw this movie when I was in College and fell in love with it. the story line was so great and makes me what to call my friends after watching it. I would recomment it to everyone.
Nostalgic look at friendship.......2007-01-17
I love The Big Chill. The first time I saw it I was just a teen and thought how great it would be to grow up and be so close with such a great group of friends. Now, 20 years later, I am drawn to the movie every so often as a reminder of how great it is to have long-lasting friendships and all the drama that goes along with that (good and bad).
The soundtrack is like a character all its own in this movie, as fully deserving as all other characters for all the air time it gets.
Because of some drug use in the movie, it's doubtful you'll find this played on TV much (without a lot of editing any way). That's one of the reasons I had to buy it--to have the full movie in all its glory.
The Big Chill - No Whimpering, It's Definitely a Bang.......2006-08-15
Very high on my list.
All star cast: Kevin Kline, Glenn Close, Jeff Goldbloom, William Hurt, Tom Berenger, JoBeth Williams, Mary Kay Place, Meg Tilly. Kevin Costner is uncredited for his role...sssh, those in the know...those who don't know, try to find him in the movie.
I just adore this movie. Witty, intelligent, the dialogs are marvelous, and the comments quotable:
"I don't know anyone who could get through the day without two or three juicy rationalizations. They're more important than sex."
"Ah, come on. Nothing's more important than sex."
"Oh yeah? Ever gone a week without a rationalization?"
"It doesn't always happen the first time."
"That's not what they told us in high school."
"Amazing tradition. They throw a great party for you on the one day they know you can't come."
"He went out with a bang, not a whimper."
Great music selections as well. It's a must see!
enjoyable, but frankly my dear, id rather be in secaucus.......2006-06-04
i managed to miss this: one of those generational impact movies, and never caught up to it until now. it is difficult to remember that all the cliches were NOT cliches when this movie was released, but i was able to watch it and just enjoy the crisp acting by all 8 stars. and of course there IS that soundtrack. still, the movie ripped off "the return of the secaucus 7", and tho i havent seen that in a long time, my guess is id prefer it on a more core level.
Baby Boomers Never Grow Up.......2006-04-05
The children of the 1960's stayed children and trapped in a yearning for the idealism of youth. Just like that 80's TV seroes "30-something" it really makes you be glad that your youth wasn't wasted after all. Watching this film as a now 30-something makes me convinced: how the mighty have fallen when their youth was blessed with too much of a good time too soon. While those who had it rough in their barely 20's, reaped the rewards of a character fortified.

Talk about too little, too late. A year after Stephen Frears's marvelous Dangerous Liaisons, Milos Forman released this film, based on the same material: the novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses. Shot at the same time but held so as not to compete, it suffered by comparison. The story--about a pair of aristocrats, former lovers, who wager that the man cannot seduce a particularly chaste woman--is still awash in lust and intrigue. But, while Forman's craft was exceptional, his cast couldn't match the power of its predecessor. In particular, Colin Firth, as the game-playing title character, lacked the snaky charm of John Malkovich, and Meg Tilly couldn't compare to the tragic beauty of Michelle Pfeiffer. Annette Bening, though born to play a vixen, seemed callow and insubstantial next to the sinister depths of Glenn Close. <I>--Marshall Fine</I>
Description
Based on the classic novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses, this delectable thriller stars Colin Firth (Bridget Jones's Diary) and Oscars® nominee* Annette Bening (American Beauty) as embittered aristocrats who weave a wicked web of cruel intentions and savage seductions. Directed by Oscar® winner** Milos Forman, Valmont is a darkly amusing period drama that issimply a piece of high entertainment (The Hollywood Reporter). In 18th-century France, a cruel and calculating playboy, Valmont (Firth), makes a malicious wager with the equally wicked Madame de Merteuil (Bening): Valmont must dishonor the married Madame de Tourvel (Meg Tilly) by sleepingwith her. If Valmont succeeds, he gets the privilege of Merteuil's bed as well. But when Valmont sets out on his task, the unexpected happens...he falls in love with Tourvel! And now Merteuil will stop at nothing to destroy Valmont's newfound passion. *1990: Supporting Actress, The Grifters; 1999: Actress, American Beauty *1975: Director, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest; 1984: Director, Amadeus

A choice between a novel and the film.......2007-06-18
I would like to know the actual story from a novel version for this film.
Judging from the following reviews, they should've left this film in its most original form as oppose to producing other remakes like Dangerous Liasons and Cruel Intentions which made the actual story lose its comical air.
I really enjoyed all the plots of the film and believe all the actors did an excellent job in creating an essence of European society where sex was considered taboo.
Scene Missing from the DVD.......2007-06-15
Pretty important one too. Has to do with Valmont giving instructions to his footman to get him "roses."
Definatively Better Than Dangerous Liasons!.......2007-02-27
I wish they had released this right after it was made instead of allowing DL to take all the limelight. A much better film, by far! Can you say lustfully poetic and subtley seductive? Colin Firth has more depth and is exceedingly more handsome than Malchovich could ever be. Fairuza as a mere child is already a powerful actress and ravishingly beautiful at that!
Annette Benning, we hardly knew you.......2006-12-17
I still remember Annette Benning performing a scene from Coastal Disturbances at the Tony Awards before she left for HOLLYWOOD. I didn't like the clothes or the hair but I thought she was crazy and smart underneath. In Valmont, she was spectacular. This movie unfortunately came out at the same time as Hollywood's TERRIBLE simplistic overblown Dangerous Liasons. Not even a youngish Colin Firth could pull ticket buyers to this movie.
Extremely enjoyable!.......2006-12-15
I loved this movie! I watched it and Dangerous Liasons within days of each other and I have to say I agree with the reviewer that said DL was cruel. John Malkovich did a great job of bringing that cruelty to the screen, but it didn't make the movie enjoyable; whereas Colin Firth can be both conniving and sensitive. Michelle Pfeiffer was disappointing and I felt that Glenn Close's character was pathetic. Where Annette Benning portrays a woman who has a tarnished reputaion, but doesn't care about appearances; Glenn Close's portrayal was of a pouty and petulant woman worried about how things will appear to society which in the final scene seems to be written all over her face! Valmont was multi-faceted with conniving characters who also enjoyed their romps, while DL had two dimensional mean characters who didn't even seem to enjoy their lives.

Set more than a decade after the story in <I>Chinatown</I>, this 1990 sequel brings Jack Nicholson back to the screen as L.A. private detective Jake Gittes. Older, fatter, worn, and frustrated, the Jake of 1948 is still haunted by the tragic events of the earlier film. While investigating a case involving adultery and questionable land dealings by an L.A. tycoon (Harvey Keitel as the other Jake), Gittes unexpectedly confronts a few old ghosts and discovers that the resource of choice in Southern California--one for which people die--is no longer water but oil. The film had a notorious production history, with Nicholson taking over the project from writer-director Robert Towne, and the dense plot can be difficult to follow. But if <I>The Two Jakes</I> doesn't measure up to the legendary status of its stylish predecessor, the film does satisfy on its own terms and brings the events of <I>Chinatown</I> to a moving conclusion. Terrific work by Keitel and supporting players Meg Tilly, Madeleine Stowe, Eli Wallach, and Ruben Blades. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>
Customer Reviews:
Great Sequel.......2006-11-12
Nicholson is as cool as ever in this sequel to Chinatown. Great film noir style.
As Good As It Gets.......2006-10-04
Usually sequels are not as good as the original films they follow...one need only think of,say"Jaws"to get this point..But with "The Two Jakes"the sequel to"Chinatown"the sequel is every bit as good as the original...The film follows the main charecter from "Chinatown",detective Jake Gittes, who has a new and disturbing case that has threads reaching back into time and inter-connecting with the original plotline..Many of the stars from the original reprise thier roles, most notably Jack Nicholson, who also directed..At the time of its original theatrical release the critics were not kind to the film,or to the director/star...Perhaps this was to have been expected, inasmuchas "Chinatown"ranks high on the list of"Best ever"films..
on the other hand most professional film critics are not only herd animals, who too often follow one another's lead like dogs sniffing each other's rear ends but have little regard for what the public thinks..if one or two"Famous"critics get a bug up thier backsides about a film it is a sure bet that the rest, afraid of being contrary,.will follow suit..also,having to sit through films of all sorts make these people jaded...they expect novelty, and are disappointed by stories, direction, acting, ect that the rest of us find quite entertaining...And most professional critics seem to find the most obscure, often foreign films to be spectacular, while most normal people do not,as if cutting edge films about, say, three men who have hernias and like bowling together on friday nights offers the very zenith of acting and film-making achievement...
So forget what the professional critics might have thought about"The Two Jakes",it was a dandy film...You won't be disappointed...
Not Better Than Chinatown, But What Is?.......2006-07-22
"The Two Jakes" is the sequel to "Chinatown." Chinatown is one of my favorite films, it's number 19 on AFI's Top 100, it won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for Robert Towne. A sequel didn't seem necessary, and it's not, but this somehow managed to work. This movie has the formula for a bad sequel; different plot, different actors, different director. Well, not different actor's...Only one character returns from Chinatown, the plot is semi-related, and Jack Nicholson is the director. He's not bad either. The script is by Robert Towne, which is even more surprising. I can't believe he would be inspired to write a sequel. The Two Jakes was made 16 years after Chinatown (in 1990) and it does take place a significant amount of years later; But Jack is still Jake. Nicholson returns as Jake Gittes, our protagonist who walked away from a death at the end of Chinatown. The events from that movie still plague him, but he still does what he does best...He's a private investigator and frequently investigates what got him caught up in all the trouble from the first movie...Marital infidelity. Gittes is investigating whether Jake Berman's (Harvey Keitel) wife is cheating on him, and she is. When Gittes schedules the confrontation, Jake (the Keitel one) shoots his wife's lover...Who also happens to be his business partner. Now Jake (the Nicholson one) is caught up in another conspiracy, which might be directly linked to his past. If you haven't seen Chinatown, don't see The Two Jakes.
There are a few references to the first film in here which people who haven't seen the first one won't get. The Two Jakes is entertaining, smart, occasionally exciting, and this is just one of those character's that Nicholson was born to play. Problem is, it drags in places (and it's 7 minutes longer than Chinatown at 138 minutes). As far as sequels go, however, this is a real winner. If you liked (or loved) Chinatown, then you should check this out...But it's definitely not required watching.
GRADE: B+
Can murder or suicide ever be truly altruistic?.......2006-06-30
This is the kid sister of Chinatown. She is not as clever or as pretty as her elder, but she raises the same question: Why do we go to Jack Nicholson movies anyway? There are many allusions to Chinatown and lots of characters to figure out how they fit in. Be careful and don't take it any more seriously than it takes itself and it is reasonably amusing.
A worthy sequel to CHINATOWN..........2006-03-20
As I recall, this movie was originally shunned upon it's theatrical release in 1990. It was an ambitious sequel to one of the milestone films of the 70's that went through a troubled production and studio turnaround through years. Yet star/ director Jack Nicholson slips comfortably back into JJ Gittes territory and creates a damned fine film with as much mindbending twists as featured in CHINATOWN. Though maybe not as amazing as that film, THE TWO JAKES is still worthwhile in its own right and features a terrific cast: Harvey Keitel, Madeliene Stowe, and the late, great Richard Farnsworth. As usual, Paramount has given us an anemic and strange DVD (the thatrical trailer is included, letterboxed to 2.35:1 even though the film itself is 1.85:1???) and due to the film's poor box-office showing it will probably never see a better release, even though it deserves one.

This unassuming little coming-of-age drama features Matt Dillon in the title role as a sweet, slightly dim teenager living with his older brother Mason (Jim Metzler) in a rural Oklahoma town. With an absentee father and a deceased mom, the two eke out a marginal existence; things get desperate enough for Mason to sell his and Tex's horses to have enough money for groceries. Mason is ready to graduate high school and has his sights set on Indiana University and a basketball scholarship; he has little patience for his younger brother and his antics, feeling like he has to babysit him to keep him out of trouble. Tex's partner-in-mischief is Johnny (Emilio Estevez), while Johnny's sister Jamie (Meg Tilly) is the object of Tex's crush. The two live under the stern eye of their authoritarian dad (Ben Johnson), foiling any ideas Tex may have about Jamie. If this film seems reminiscent of <I>The Outsiders</I>, it's because it's similarly based on an S.E. Hinton novel; its tone and mood also calls to mind early-'80s kid dramas such as <I>Breaking Away</I> and <I>My Bodyguard</I>. It's a quiet little movie, capturing the boredom and tedium of small-town life nicely, with good characterizations and early roles by the Brat Pack. Dillon helped define himself early on with troubled-teen roles, and this is a fine example. <I>Tex</I> is also notable because it was one of the first adult dramas to come from Disney Studios. <I>--Jerry Renshaw</I>
Description
Experience Disney's poignant coming-of-age tale based on the best-selling novel by S.E. Hinton. For Tex McCormick (Matt Dillon) and older brother Mason, just growing up is the ultimate adventure, especially when Dad is always gone, Mom has passed on, and life is dealing you one challenge after another. Times are so tough, brother Mason has to sell off Tex's favorite horse just to put food on the table. So begins the small-town saga of one teen's straightforward struggle to find friendship, love, and family -- and learning that growing up is about never giving up.

Tex (1982) Is A Great Movie! A Super Great Story! .......2007-05-10
.
This coming-of-age movie, TEX, already IS and no doubt will become an all-time classic, great for kids, as well as adults of all ages.
The slow-moving, well-crafted production about two unassuming teenage brothers coping with life is set in rural Bixby and Tulsa, Oklahoma (two of my own hometowns). The directors and actors do a superb job in realistically portraying the laid-back real-life characters created by Tulsa's own S.E. Hinton. The cameras provide beautiful shots of the beautiful rural Eastern Oklahoma landscape of Bixby and of the cityscape of nearby Tulsa.
The marvelous ending leaves the viewer feeling good. The entire cast, including Matt Dillon, Jim Metzler, Meg Tilly and Emilio Estevez all give remarkably realistic and believable performances.
I shall treasure this film forever. It rates right along with The Last Picture Show as a collector's item.
80's Movies Fan.......2005-12-16
TEX was a great Movie,I own THE DVD..A must See IF You're Matt Dillon's Fan :)
Well made and sincere coming of age movie.......2005-07-27
Tex is a 15 year old Oklahoma farm boy with more than his fair share of problems .He is being raised by his elder brother in the absence of parents -his mother is dead and his father simply walks away from domestic responsibility .the movie is about how this personable and engaging -but not over bright -teenager strives to make sense of his world .It examines the pains and perils of growing up and Tex 's family life is not a bed of roses .The movie treats of themes untypical of Disney productions --booze, sex, fighting ,class distinction and economic problems ,school problems and the sudden need to grow up and assume responsibility more quickly than most .
This is both the appeal and the problem of the movie-it is an adult look at children's lives and treats the issues seriously ,but tries to cram too much into a brief running time .Consequently the picture feels slightly overcooked and issue heavy .
Still it is splendidly acted especially by Matt Dillon as Tex and by Meg tilly as his girl friend
This is awarm hearted but not a sappy movie and its honesty ,sincerity and skill commend it to me ,but a little less plot would have made it better

it was such fun to go back and see how much bixby has changed in 24 years. even though a few things are still there, most are gone now, as one person said, by the flood of 1986. the university towers, the round building they go into for the drug transaction is where my jr.-sr. prom was held in 1977. it was a good feeling just to recognize thee places and bring back great memories from the old days..

An Early Talent.......2006-07-03
This is probably Lowe's best early career movie. I miss not not seeing him in more today, so it's a treat to watch some of his early stuff. Recommend rent or purchase on this one.
Reminiscent of Hitchcock's Suspision.......2006-01-28
As in the earlier movie, a beautiful woman marries a mysterious man who may or may not want to murder her for her money. This is a diifferent story than Suspision but it does seem the Hitchcock film at least inspired this movie.
Giving away plotlines will take away from enjoyment of the film so that will be avoided. Rob Lowe is no Cary Grant in this movie (or any other for that matter) but he does manage to handle his part. Meg Tilly is excellent and her performance carries the movie. In the Hitchcock film, Joan Fontaine won a best actress Oscar in the newleywed part and Tilly's work here is of that caliber.
Masquerade.......2004-03-31
A handsome gigolo, Tim Whalen (Rob Lowe), meets a wealthy heiress, Olivia Lawrence (Meg Tilley), and her selfish and domineering stepfather is far from happy with their relationship. The local cop (Doug Savant) also expresses an interest in the Lawrence girl.
A subsequent string of murders puts each of the characters under suspicion and the wealthy Lawrence girl is suddenly caught up in a murderous plot that will see both her inheritance and her life put at risk.
'Masquerade' is a tense thriller containing a multitude of twists and turns that keep the viewer guessing to the end. It is in the same vein as 'Bad Influence', 'Sleeping with the Enemy', and 'Dead Calm'. I first watched this film when it was released on VHS in 1988 ... it is still as exciting today.
Watch it with someone you can trust.
Also stars Kim Cattrall and John Glover.
The extras include widescreen format and DVD quality picture.
Slick, stylish thriller.......2004-03-29
A handsome gigolo charms his way into the life of a beautiful young woman, heiress to a multi-million dollar fortune. After the loss of her mother, she lives with her self-indulgent stepfather, a ruthless cad intent on controlling both his stepdaughter's inheritance and her relationships. A local police officer also shows emotional interest in the heiress, having known her since childhood. But who can she really trust? 'Masquerade'is a dark and moody thriller, focusing on themes of money and greed, trust and betrayal. Reasonably-paced, and containing a multitude of twists and turns, 'Masquerade' is undoubtedly one of Rob Lowe's better thrillers. It is in the same vein as 'Bad Influence' and 'First Degree', with a talented supporting cast, including Meg Tilly and 'Sex and the City's' Kim Cattrall.

This Broadway hit gets a solid film treatment by director Norman Jewison, but that can't make up for the weaknesses of the script (which were as true onstage as they are here). Jane Fonda plays a chain-smoking shrink sent to a convent to do a psychological evaluation of a novice (Meg Tilly) who gave birth to a baby and then killed it in her little room. Was it a virgin birth? A miracle? And what of the bloody stigmata that seem to spontaneously appear on her hands? Fonda also finds herself clashing with the Mother Superior (Anne Bancroft) over the line between faith and science. But writer John Pielmeier can't flesh this out beyond an idea; in the end, the solution is a disappointingly earthbound one that even the strong acting in this film can't elevate. <I>--Marshall Fine</I>

Secrets and lies, faith and science.......2007-05-17
I picked up this movie recently as I remembered seeing its poster in the theaters at the place where we used to go to see movies. My mom told me that was a movie for adults, so it always had some intregue for me. Now that I am an adult (ha ha ha), it holds just as many questions and just as much mystery.
Jane Fonda plays Dr. Livingston, a court appointed psychiatrist who has been called in to investigate a mysterious murder case. A young woman has given birth and apparently killed her baby soon after. The young woman was Sister Agnes, a novice at a French Canadian convent. She has no memory of the event, and the Mother Superior is bent on keeping others out. She and Dr. Livingston would clash several times. Dr. Livingston is the voice of reason, the realist, the one who is determined to find the answers and a perfectly reasonable explination for everything. Mother Superior is the one who has put her faith in God, trusting enough to leave some things alone to that of the whims of fate. And Agnes, sweet, innocent little Agnes is at the center of it all.
In the conversations Dr. Livinston has with Agnes, we find that she is innocent but hiding an abusive past. She doesn't understand many things about the world, and that she had been locked in this convent all her life she had no means in which to learn. Why would she? This is the place where she is finding happiness away from her abusive past. This is hard for Dr. Livingston to accept, why any young woman would want to be a nun and live this way. Dr. Livingston has her own problems, and perhaps she wants to atone for her own mistakes by finding and answer. We also find out that Mother Superior is not so innocent either. She did not become a nun until later in life, had once been married, and choose to leave the world that Dr. Livingston comes from. It is reveiled that Agnes is the Mother Superior's niece, and that she suspected that Agnes was pregnant to the point that she put a waste basket in her room for her to dispose of the child once it was born. Mother Superior also wants to protect Agnes and keep others out from disrupting their quest for spiritual realization. Naturally, there will be clashes.
And under hypnosis, we hear about the night Agnes's child was conceived. Per the instruction of a dying elderly nun, Sister Paul (who Agnes also said saw the mysterious man) tells her to go to the secret passage behind a statue of St. Michael in the basement. Agnes follows the passage and goes to the barn, where she would meet HIM. From there she cannot describe what happened. She says she saw him from her window in the field everynight and he sang a beautiful song to her, so she knew him. *Shudder*
What fascinated me the most about this movie was the fact that Agnes was a true innocent, and as one she really did not know where babies come from, and it calls upon your faith which you thought was long since dead. So who was the father? If you believe in science, it was a man. If you believe in faith, it was God. These are the only two answers possible. But, we will never know. But it just can't be, your rational side says to you. Yet, you hear Agnes's side of the story under hypnosis and you will always wonder, plus hearing her sing the song that her mysterious midnight visitor would sing to her. Even in this day and age, there are some that are truly blessed with the ability to communicate with the spiritual world. Agnes truly is of God.
Excellent religious movie...with a suspense and mystery twist!!!.......2007-02-15
NOTE: This review of mine is for the movie on VHS, not the DVD. Another review will be written when I get the DVD.
A very suspenseful movie with a mystery twist, 1985's Agnes of God stars Jane Fonda, Anne Bancroft, and Meg Tilly. A young nun, Sister Agnes (Tilly) gives birth to a baby girl in her convent room on the 3rd floor, but virtually has no knowledge of being pregnant and having the baby. Jane Fonda plays Dr. Martha Livingston, the psychiatrist who is appointed by the court to talk to Agnes and get whatever details she can get regarding the case (and being nagged by her colleagues for taking too long to resolve it). But, the case seems to drag on for a certain period of time, as Dr. Livingston tries to unscramble the mystery of the situation. Anne Bancroft plays the Mother Superior Miriam Ruth, who doesn't approve of Dr. Livingston's works of psychiatry. This movie's story is kind of strange as Agnes acts as though the pregnancy never happened in her life. Her behavior at first seems to give viewers the impression that she knows nothing about sex, pregnancy, what causes pregnancy, the physical difference between men and women (this obviously means that she never even took a sex ed class in school or that her mother didn't have a talk with her about the subject of sex), etc. Questions in this story that are never answered are: Who was the father of the baby? and How did a man get into the convent and have sex with Agnes? There are some disturbing details about Agnes' background in this movie, such as being molested by her mother and being made fun of, and saying that her mother "watches and listens". The blood scenes were very haunting and scary. The hypnosis scenes were frightening and dramatic as well. The final ruling in the court reveals that she was in no manner responsible for her actions that night. Very suspenseful movie and Norman Jewison did a great job directing it. Bancroft, Fonda, and Tilly were all excellent in their roles as well. Will get the DVD soon!! I love this movie!!
timeless.......2007-01-04
I will never get tired of watching this movie. I'm glad that DVDs last longer than VHS! That is how many times I have watched this movie. The performances are delightful.
ONE WONDERS..........2006-07-02
One wonders why there was a barrage of attacks against Mel Gibson's The Passion supposed "anti-Semitism," and not one peep about this open and vicious attack on Christianity by certain "Hollywood types."
Hypocracy, perhaps? Hmmm. I wonder...
A failure in many respects.......2006-01-12
Jane Fonda, whom I respect highly as an actress, cannot save this dud. Neither the score nor the cinematography is memorable. Many scenes revolve around the fact that Dr. Livingstone is a smoker, which is a very flimsy hook upon which to hang a film. This film did not hold my interest--at several points I was consciously bored and had to exert will-power to finish watching it. Moreover, the views of psychiatric practice and hypnosis are wholly unrealistic. It seems this film could not decide what to be, and certainly lacked the courage to demythologize its subject.

The pod people are back! Aliens take over human bodies and souls in this hard-hitting remake of the classic tale starring Meg Tilly, Gabrielle Anwar and Forest Whitaker. Year: 1993 Director: Abel Ferrara Starring: Gabrielle Anwar, Meg Tilly, Forest Whitaker
Customer Reviews:
The Body Snatchers.......2007-05-06
Well done scary movie which was a modern remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
Great re-make.......2007-03-23
Though the older version 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' will always have a special place in my movie going memory, this re-make was awesome! Hollywood has come a long way with special effects, so the new horror film has an added realism that's delightful (and a great diet aide). They went a lot further this time in raising my blood pressure and increasing heart palpatations. I must also say that Meg Tilly played her part to the hilt! If they give some sort of Oscar for horror flicks, she has my vote. Just excellent! For younger horror buffs who don't know what 'Pod People' are, this is a must see (or they can visit my town, we have a few). For the older folks who dearly loved the original, don't despair. This is a wonderful new version that can stand on its own and doesn't sully the spark of the former 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' we dearly loved.
Chrissy K. McVay - Author
3rd.......2007-03-19
The second remake of the original black and white classic is a miss for me. It is well made, but it doesn't really do anything new with the idea. I enjoyed the original movie and the update in the 70's. This one was less about the paranoid aspect and more about horror. I have heard that another remake is on the horizon, so maybe that one will bring something a little more unique to the table. This movie is okay, it pales though when compared to the first two movies. If you want a decent alien takeover movie from around the same time period, I would grab "The Pupper Masters" with Donald Sutherland.
POD PEOPLE RETURN.......2006-11-05
Did we need a third version of Jack Finney's classic novel about an alien takeover via creepy pods? Probably not, but Abel Ferrara's treatment on the familiar theme has some faithful relics from the first two (the sleep influence, the horrifying screams to identify non-conversions), and stands on its own as a creepy little thriller.
This time the movie is set on an Army base where the pods are being managed by the soldiers and staff. An EPA Chemical investigator arrives with his family (a daughter, son and new wife) and soon they all become involved.
Meg Tilly has a smallish role but is frighteningly chilling as the mother who has plans for hubby and kin. Gabrielle Anwar has one of her first roles as teenage daughter Marty who finds herself falling for hunky chopper pilot Billy Wirth. Dad Terry Kinney tries to save his family; R. Lee Ermey is the camp general; Christine Elise his wild daughter and Forest Whitaker is the camp medic who takes drastic measures to prevent his takeover.
All in all, a respectable interpretation of a classic scifi story.
Same premise, but unnecessary .......2006-08-09
This is a pretty weak entry in the pod people series, in every way inferior to Philip Kaufmann's brilliant 1978 "Invasion of the Body Snatchers." The premise is essentially the same, with aliens coming to earth and inhabiting the bodies of existing beings here. This time, however, the story revolves around a teenage girl, her brother, her step-mother and her father, who is doing some testing at a military base. There is the clichéd "You're not my real mother" bickering between the girl, played by the luscious Gabrielle Anwar, and the stepmother (Meg Tilley), as well as the clichéd tension between the girl and her father, who just doesn't understand what its like to be a teenager. Blah. I'm not certain why the producers wanted to make another body snatching alien movie, but wouldn't one assume they would at least want to surpass the first two? Otherwise, why even make the movie? Even so, it is worth watching if for no other reason than to see Gabrielle Anwar in all her splendor. That, and if you have not seen the first two, this one would be okay.

A Mother's Love.......2007-05-24
"PSYCHO II", a 'twenty-years-later' tale, could have been a total disaster. But with a story, though far-fetched, that extends naturally from the first one & includes and/or name-drops characters from Hitchcock's awesome original film, "PSYCHO II" succeeds. Loaded with an authentic slasher-flick feel combined with a post-giallo approach (haunting score, jaunty camera angles partially cribbed from the original, a 'whodunit' plot), this flick feels more inspired than your average case of cash-in 'sequel-itis'.
I'm probably not saying anything new here, since the movie's been out for so long and is all but forgotten by anyone besides genre fans looking to complete their collections... but if you're like me, & you remember this pic vaguely and want to catch up on the old-school nostalgia tip, I'd say pick up "PSYCHO II". Because where the first film's tame-by-today's-standards approach doesn't really feel very scary in retrospect (aside from everybody's favorite seminal shower scene), and is more of a study in film-making technique than anything at this point, "PSYCHO II" is just a spooky, fun ride. It has a couple of good jumps and, more effectively, some truly eerie scenes (particularly the foreboding weirdness when Norman Bates believes he's talking to his 'real' mother on the phone). Anthony Perkins, reprising his infamous Bates role, is pretty spot-on here, and considering the teen demographic this one had to play to, there's a couple of pretty gruesome, '80s-style kill set pieces. These elements, combined with an ending ALMOST as good as the original's, make "PSYCHO II" a much better second installment than most of its retread kin from the same era. And it's certainly finer than any of the other junky later installments in the 'PSYCHO' franchise.
Pretty good..........2007-04-11
This was a good second installment of psycho. Ofcourse I never really fell in love with the psycho series. Never really cared to. I doubt I will purchase the third installment. I just wanted to atleast see the second movie in the series. If your into the psycho franchise, then get this move, otherwise just rent it.
A Great Part II For The Classic Original.......2007-04-08
Psycho II is a great movie. What happens when a mentally ill man who has killed in the past is released back into the very community where the murders were committed? Well just take a gander at this movie and find out. Some folks accept Norman Bates but others have plans for him. Who can he trust? Does he deserve a second chance? This dvd release is in widescreen and looks great.
Just as good as the original.......2007-02-17
I remember seeing this when I was younger and getting scared out of my mind. Now that I am older, I see it from a more psychological/suspenseful sense...and it is even better! Sequels usually pale in comparision to the original, but this one stands on its own. It not only has a great storyline, but also adds a great continuation to the Psycho history.
Psycho II deals with Norman Bates' battle with sanity as those he harmed attempt to push him back over the edge. All the while you are thinking--is mother really dead?--is Norman committing the murders or is it all in his mind? I would positively recommend Psycho II to fans of the original and new fans who want to explore the world of Psycho.
Suprisingly good sequel........2006-08-23
22 years later after the incident at the Bates Motel, Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) has been released out of the mental institute for the criminally insane and is back home. Even though he's back, he still feels haunted by mother's voice and has a second job as a cook at a diner, he's gotten strange phone calls and notes from someone playing Mother so he or she can drive him back to his original state of insanity.
Very good sequel to Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece of horror has good acting and has Perkins reprising his role as everyone's favorite looney with Meg Tilly, Vera Mills (From the original), Robert Loggia and Dennis Franz co-star. Jerry Goldsmith's score is half as good as the original's score and there's plenty of good scares to make one hell of a good sequel to an all-time masterpiece, there's also a nice twist at the end of this movie.
The DVD has good picture and sound quality with the only extra being the theatrical trailer, if you liked the original then i suggest you give this a try.

one dark night.......2007-05-13
I loved this movie ever since I was a teenager, and when I saw that it was on DVD after all these years...I had to buy it. I loved it then and still in love with this movie!!!! the movie is still a good and scary even though it was made back in the 80's.
One Dark Night DVD........2007-03-04
So let me be the first one to tell you this is one cult classic flick that will scare you well most of you, those who will admit that it did. if you like supernatural thriller films then this one for you, it all begins with a daughter of a scientist that has strange dreams of Girls & Guys being murdered in a weird way . there's a pair of Ladies in high school that call themselves the sisters that are accepting a new recuit in the group , but first she has to pass their childish test. will she survive? rent it to see it's PG For mild Language & strong violence , Mild brief nudity in one scene. It stars Adam west ( Batman fame & one lady that was in better off dead as the singer of the band & now voices cartoons namely tommy of the rugrats Elizabeth Daily. so enjoy this one dark night haaaaa if you can stand it . :) this is a real horror movie not a one passing as one
Highly Recommended for a Good Scare .
Ummm I really think Archor Bay should've got One Dark Night than this company it's only half restored, there are some dirt and scratches left which take away from the enjoyment of watching this film plus a frame jumps, but the colors are bright better then the vhs version which was faded. the case that it comes in also is'nt best .
Tilly Shines.......2006-11-10
A tired initiation theme livened up but one stella performance from Meg and some creative lemonade making from the crew. Quite frightening if you can get into it as much as our heroine. The extra disc is endless footage of filming without narration and interesting as that.
Good Spookster.......2006-08-19
One Dark Night received a limited theatrical release in a year when the slasher film was pretty much scraping the bottom of the barrel. Though still a "teens in peril" formula, it earns it's keep by bucking the trend of stalk-&-slash by reaching for some genuine supernatural thrills, and gruesomely morbid set pieces. It really has more in common with the likes of Phantasm than Friday The 13th.
I know many find the first two-thirds slow-going, but I think One Dark Night delivers a relatively sustained build-up to the show-stopping climax, that still gives a honest dose of the creeps.
One sinister dark movie.......2006-07-10
A girl desperatly wants to join a group of other girls but she has to pay a price: she has to spend the night in the local mausuleum. Not much going on you might think. But in a subplot we've allready seen that a mysterious, paranormal-gifted madman is just buried there.
And, as it turnds out, even after his demise, this madman still has a lot of nasty energy within him that wants to "get out" at all cost, making other lost souls in the building come to some sort of "half living state" again.
About all the reasons why I liked this cheap, obscure little horror movie, I have allready mentioned in my user comments review of "Oasis of the Zombies" a.k.a. "Oasis of the living dead".
The low budget gives it a distinct cheap look, which suggests a bit of a documentary-feel, and it has a quiet kind of atmosphere in the overal tone although there's still a lot of screaming and running in this one.
Just like the zombies in "Oasis of the living dead", the living dead who terrorize the girl and some other accidental invaders, are not screaming, running, jumping or acting franticly: they just emerge from their tombs and, quietly gazing, start to move across the floors of the seeming endlessly, dimly lit corridors.
This quietness the undead produce during their menacing assault is some kind of releaf, well... for me it is anyway, and a stray from the too much seen hysterical-zombie-running-and-howling stuff.
But think of this as well: the most eerie scene we catch right at the beinging. Police officers enter the room of an alledged serial killer. The scenery they (and we) witness is both very awkward and strange: a handful of dead girls' bodies lay stacked away in a closet, and kitchen items like plates and forks are stuck in the wall - no extreme blood or gore, but an enstranged, weird and very creepy mise-en-scene which immediately asks for answers.
But what the answers are is of lesser importance. It's how to start a movie in a good and haunting way, without throwing in a shoot-out, a cliché chase of cops and criminals, or a million dollar of cheesy sfx.
It's an eerie and off-beat but highly disturbing start and could have come out of the pen of such `masters of the weird tale' as Thomas Ligotti or Ramsey Campbell.
Okay, there are long, overstretched moments of dullness that break the underlying tention quite a bit. But all the things I mentioned above make this obscure little scare a treat none the less.

A special DVD release is long overdue.......2007-04-27
It's amazing the glut of mediocre films that have come out on DVD long ago, while Leaving Normal is still only available on VHS.
This is a wonderful movie, well acted, well written and some very funny moments. It needs another chance to be seen by more people.
Awesome movie...needs a DVD release........2007-04-02
I absolutely love this movie, and Universal needs to get off their can and release this on DVD, my VCR broke, I'm not buying another one and the powers that be so kindly made this movie copy-protected, so now I can't even get it transferred to DVD on my own. I guess Universal has until the next time it comes on AMC or Turner and then hello DVD recorder and goodbye VHS (it's not like the DVD release is gonna have extras anyway)
How Could This Lahti/Tilley Charmer Have Passed Us By?.......2006-08-15
I recently caught this wonderfully captivating flick on the Sundance channel. It was early one morning when I couldn't sleep and there was nothing else but garbage on over 150 cable channels. Christive Lahti and Meg Tilley were the perfect combination to keep me from drifting off back to La La Land...
Would rank it right up there with Thelma & Louise...too bad it wasn't released later so it would have received the audience it deserves. Missed the beginning and thankfully found it here on Amazon. Hope someone who has vision and capital to spare puts it on DVD!
Before there was Thelma and Louise..........2006-07-17
Actually, both probably came out about the same time, or close...I am astounded that this has not been issued on DVD yet. Of all the "buddy" movies I've seen - especially dealing with women - this one always cut straight to the bone with me. When Meg Tilly, in a moment of trauma, cries out "Why am I here again?" referring to her continual missteps in life, it struck such a resonant chord with me. Do we ever feel that we've gotten to the place we're supposed to get to? Apparently, in an absolutely luminous moment, she does, as, looking up at the Northern Lights sometime after that, she responds to a friend asking her why she's happy now, she answers, "Because I didn't expect anything." (Or words to that effect.) Her character comes to an epiphany before Christine Lahti's does - but both come to a resolution by the end of the movie. It's like observing two of your most dysfunctional friends from afar - you long to help them, hope they arrive at the right answer, and sit back happy when they do. (I also like Meg's moment in the phone booth when, after a raucous conversation with her former husband, she screams, "I MARRIED him, what is my problem?") Hopefully in a short while we will be able to get this on DVD - certainly it is the prevailing comment in the critiques.
Please issue on DVD.......2006-03-05
I hope the powers that be are listening and release this movie on DVD!
