Arthurian mythology and modern day decay seem perfect complements to each other in this Terry Gilliam drama/comedy/fantasy. Shock jock Jack Lucas (Jeff Bridges) makes an off-handed radio remark that causes a man to go on a killing spree, leaving Lucas unhinged with guilt. Lucas's later, chance meeting with Parry (Robin Williams), a homeless man suffering from dementia, gets him involved in the unlikely quest for the Holy Grail. The rickety, and patently unrealistic stand that insanity is just a wonderful place to be, and that the homeless are all errant knights, wears awfully thin, but there are numerous moments of sad grace and violent beauty in this film. The screenplay by Richard LaGravenese launched his successful career and his smart wordplay helped garner Mercedes Ruehl an Oscar as Lucas's girlfriend. --Keith Simanton

Phenomenal movie. Why Terry Gilliam is one of the finest filmmakers ever. If you haven't seen it, do yourself a favor. Micheal Jeter also deserves complete respect for his performance as well. Did you see Tom Waits? BOOP! Go No Further!

5 out of 5 stars The mind is an amazing thing!.......2007-03-28

After losing his beloved wife in a horrible shooting, a former college professor played by Robin Williams, reinvents himself. After coming out of a catatonic state, he becomes Parry, living in the basement of the apartment building where he and his wife had resided. He is a friend to the homeless and saves the life of Jack Lucas a disc jockey whose vitriolic diatribe sent one of his listeners over the edge. The listener is the guy who shoots up the bar where Parry and his wife were. After this happens Lucas becomes an alcoholic being supported by his long suffering girlfriend played by Mercedes Ruehl (in an Oscar winning role). His connection with Parry saves them both. The human mind is an incredible thing. Every time Parry thinks about his wife or happiness with a woman he has fallen in love with, he hallucinates a "red knight" who chases him on a horse. He becomes hysterical with fear. He can't "be" anyone but Parry, his mind won't allow it. Its self-preservation. Robin Williams is one of those rare actors who can make you laugh and cry at the same time. I wish I could give this film more than five stars.

3 out of 5 stars Brilliant but erratic.......2007-03-26

First, it's worth viewing to see the acting skills of Williams and Bridges, both of whom could steal a scene (or movie) from any lesser actor. Bridges's slide into utter social ruin is poignant in light of Williams's similar emotional and mental meltdown, directly influenced by Bridges's comments (in his role as a radio show host). The paranoia and borderline personality of Williams is carefully weighed against his environment, his love for a clumsy, uncoordinated wallflower (Lydia), and the wretchedness of being homeless; yet this is almost poetically justified by his spouting words of romance and Shakespeare.

In contrast, Bridges totally loses himself and all respectability (if he had any as a ranting, raving DJ named Jack Lucas) by his collapse into alcoholism and neglect after being fired as a result of a tragic response to an on-air retort. Cheers also to Mercedes Ruehl in her Oscar-winning role as a heart-on-her-sleeve video store owner who completely captures the potential and soul of a woman waiting for the man in her life (Bridges) to come to his senses, values, and scruples and marry her before she gets yet another broken heart.

But it's not a love story; this is more of a "man's search for meaning" mission, and the visual glimpses into the shattered mind of Williams's character as he mourns the death of his wife and his sense of purpose (to find the Holy Grail) are not for the insensitive and insecure. This movie really does give a biting, satirical look at those who flaunt their sense of power in the radio industry and the real tragedy that the homeless and mentally ill face on an everyday basis. Worth also seeing to note the differences between Ken Kesey's "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" mentally ill and the patients in the hospital here. A stunning round of applause also for Michael Jeter as an over-the-top flaming transvestite who delivers the singing telegram-of-a-lifetime in an accounting firm.

3 out of 5 stars Williams showcase.......2007-02-08

Jeff Bridges is a self-centered, big-shot talk radio host, full of venom for the world at large; Robin Williams is a street person who's lost his girl to a gun-wielding nutjob spurred on by Bridges and something he says on his radio show. By accident they meet and become friends. There is something about the Holy Grail, about making commitments, about being accepted, but it's all pretty superficial. The movie floats over a lot of ground and is overly long, but it's a showcase for Williams's looniness. The "messages" are very shallow and hard to take seriously, and worst of all is the sappy ending which is infantile and unbelievable. The high point for me: Williams singing "Lydia the Tattooed Lady," which is a riot - though he changes the lyrics at one point from Stonewall Jackson to Michael Jackson, probably assuming this audience never would have heard of Stonewall Jackson. It's that kind of movie.

A hand full of citizens of various occupations and orientations realize the west is not all it is cracked up to be. They decide to go back east, but to do this they will need a skilled and knowledgeable wagon master. Who should stumble in but the best wagon master in the west, James H. Harlow (John Candy). Naturally there is a money grubbing cabal apposed to this move and they will stop at nothing to throat the "Wagons East" plan.

Well designed with a select group of actors that never overplayed their parts. The consumes and scenes here exceptionally good for the comedy. The Indians look like Indians and the floozies look floozy. The film is jam packed with one liners.

2 out of 5 stars Hurrah for John Candy, Boo for the Film.......2006-02-24

WAGONS EAST was a sad epitaph to John Candy's career. The plot is good, but the screenplay is terrible. Sadly, Candy passed away during the last two weeks of filming. At the time the film company commented that Candy's scenes were already in the can, but the reality is that John Candy is inexplicably missing from a couple of scenes. His absence is most notable in the "Snow in Summertime" scene. A padded stand-in wearing Candy's buckskins is seen sauntering away in the background, but John Candy is nowhere to be seen around the fireplace later.

Filmed in Mexico, WAGONS EAST is a BLAZZING SADDLES wanna-be. Instead it looks more like a low-budget television movie. Actor Ed Lauter plays the bad guy. Unfortunately, his stereotypical character is almost a rip-off of Kirk Douglas' accident prone heavy in 1979's comedy THE VILLAIN. Lauter has been in television and movies a long time. He appeared in both versions of THE LONGEST YARD. He could have found a better cinematic vehicle than this.

The story is simply this: The residents of a lackluster western town decide that it was a mistake to ever move west. They hire John Candy to lead them back east. Unfortunately, the publicity generated by this eastward march causes influential land speculators to panic. As such, they attempt to foil returning settlers plans by sending a professional bad guy to intercept them.

Much as I enjoy John Candy movies, this one is a disappointment. I cannot even say that it was good to see Candy on the big screen again as he appeared to be laboring through each scene. In Candy's last two films, CANADIAN BACON and WAGON'S EAST, he sported a scraggily beard. This was not the same energetic John Candy from STRIPES, BRUSTER'S MILLIONS, SPLASH, UNCLE BUCK, PLANES, TRAINS & AUTOMOBILES, ONLY THE LONELY, or SUMMER RENTAL.

Okay, enough bashing the film. The DVD is very affordable and if you are a John Candy fan, then this should probably find its way into your movie collection. It is just a shame that Candy's last film was this one.

1 out of 5 stars terrible terrible way to remember John.......2006-01-08

5 out of 5 stars itýs a thin line between good and evil.......2001-03-25

Richard Thomas is perfectly cast in this TV movie, since playing a creepy sociopath utilises his weakness as an actor. As a homeless man who insinuates himself into the life of Bruce Davison, like Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction but without the sex, Thomas is first seen in Charles Manson beard and long hair. This getup hides his facial mole which defines him as much as the cleft in Kirk Douglas' chin. One may find the presentation of the homeless as greedy psychopaths offensive, particularly when Thomas demonstrates an accumulation of money from begging. However once we learn how Thomas has become homeless, with the suggestion that he hasn't been on the street for long, the shaming stereotype lessens. The first resentment of Thomas' street behaviour is a test for the audience's tolerance. Is Thomas harassing or is the person he approaches over-reacting? Since we have seen that Thomas is accumulating, and his reaction to the man's refusal, we are more likely to read Thomas as dangerous, even if the title didn't already say so. Director Noel Nosseck even makes a demonic parallel, though specifying it would spoil the climax, and I could have done without one close-up with Thomas' face half lit. Thomas claims that he "knows people", which is always the excuse of the sociopath, and his in-your-face technique creates the opposite desired effect to any reasonable person -anyone who doesn't see through the banality of his trying to be friendly act deserves whatever happens to them. Nosseck actually uses this effect when Thomas has a tirade which reveals his intention. The teleplay by Carey and Chad Hayes is streamlined. Nothing seems superfluous, everything feeds the narrative, and Nosseck keeps things moving. We get a standard hiding so as not to be discovered when Thomas' room is being searched and he returns unexpectedly but without an obvious conclusion, some off-camera killings, and the jovial smile of a detective falling from his face when it is no longer required. Davison can play this kind of nice guy family man in his sleep but thankfully he is given limits when provoked.

5 out of 5 stars Why Robin Williams didn't get the Oscar, I'll never understand.........2007-05-14

Phenomenal movie. Why Terry Gilliam is one of the finest filmmakers ever. If you haven't seen it, do yourself a favor. Micheal Jeter also deserves complete respect for his performance as well. Did you see Tom Waits? BOOP! Go No Further!

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-05-13

THe movie is wonderfully Acted and very meaningful. It Shows the ups and downs of everyday life.I would highly Recommand buying this movie

4 out of 5 stars "Do you have a really big book?".......2007-04-08

3 out of 5 stars It's a fixer-upper.......2005-11-21

Saw this to find out what RDA did before Stargate. It's OK, but it could have been much better. The actors are held back by a mushy story--not so much intriguing as confusing--a clumsy, generic script, and dirt-cheap production values.
RDA's character should have ben developed more. Is he an obsessed lover who went bad, or a bona-fide nut? If he's nuts, was he nuts from the start, or did the house do it to him?
Oh, and the ending? Good, lord, what was that? "Woops, out of film...Eh, we'll just end it here, what the hell."
A lot of interesting things could have been done here, but they weren't.
File this under "RDA pays his dues."

4 out of 5 stars RDA is too convincing as a bad guy!.......2003-05-22

This is the first movie I saw without him as the hero - he was perfect! His character manipulated the victim right from their first encounter. I was surprised that the movie didn't explore more into the couple's relationship. It had an R rating, so there was plenty of room to play around here. I will watch it again, when I want to see really great acting and a really "bad" bad guy!

4 out of 5 stars Through the Eyes of a Killer.......2003-01-06

I have to confess I was disappointed in the movie, after reading such positive reiviews. While I think RDAs portrayal of the villian is very well done, I don't think the character as a whole is very well developed. When he 'switches' to his darker side, it is so much of a change and so unexpected that it's not very believable. I think this is the one flaw in a plot that is otherwise very good. Marg Helgenberger is very believable, as are the supporting actors. Since I'm a big fan of RDA, I don't regret watching it, but I don't think it will become one of my 'watched 10x' collection.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely NOT MacGyver!.......2002-09-12

As an avid fan of the MacGyver series, I find Richard Dean Anderson superb in this twisted stalker/murder movie...a must to see for anyone who enjoys a good mystery!
