This cute movie by William Dear stars John Lithgow as a family man who befriends a Sasquatch (a.k.a. Bigfoot) and brings the friendly monster's oversized, hairy self into his Seattle home. Mayhem and comedy ensue, but things take a heavier turn when a hunter (David Suchet) gets on the creature's trail. Everything hinges on the relationship between Lithgow's character and Harry (the Sasquatch), and that relationship is really quite effective and touching. Don Ameche is a hoot as an old guy who has dreamed of meeting Bigfoot all his life and finally gets the glorious chance. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

Description

John Lithgow takes adventure to new heights in this big-laughs, big-hearted, big-footed comedy for the whole family! A chance car accident introduces the Hendersons to the real-life Bigfoot, who is anything but a ferocious monster and quickly becomes a true friend to the family. They're soon in a race against the clock to return "Harry" to his natural environment before the authorities capture him. The fur will fly in this feel-good romp - an Oscar winner for Best Makeup - the whole family will enjoy again and again!

4 out of 5 stars Harry and the Hendersons .......2007-06-02

Nice liitle movie about a 'fictional' character set in the Seattle area .
Great fun for the whole family .... and you get to see John Lithgow with more hair (funny how we lose our cranial covering and then it migrates to other parts of the body ) and Melinda Dillon fresh from closeEncounters of the 3rd kind .
Don Ameche is wonderful.

Something to let all kids watch ...reminds me of the best 'Disney' stuff when I was a kid .

5 out of 5 stars Don't Miss This Movie.......2007-05-31

It was great to revisit a movie I have always loved. Many people have been searching for a release of this movie and now it has finally come to DVD. The "extras" are mostly promotional material that supported the movies original release so don't expect much there, but the movie itself is awesome!

5 out of 5 stars Once upon a time with Harry .......2007-05-30

Great for children and adults, this movie can be watched over and over again. Enjoy the comedy and the imaginative creation of Harry.

5 out of 5 stars Bigfoot, Bigheart....and a BiggerMind than you might think.......2007-05-26

This is one of the best family movies ever made!! I don't know why it wasn't a big hit??!?!! If you haven't seen this movie yet, especially if you're into bigfoot but, even if your not....you must see it. I believe that having an open mind and an open heart is important and this movie helps people see how, why and what the results might be. Give yourself over to the big guy.....heck, I'd let him stay with me....well for a little while. Great family fun and adventure can't be found like this in modern movies; Harry and the Hendersons has real heart and one of my favorite performances by John Lithgow. The cast is a great combination of very gifted actors who gave great performances that should have been recognized as such and really haven't been. Buy it! Buy it! Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Love this movie.......2007-05-25

Couldn't find this movie anywhere- not even on netflix- so it was great to finally be able to purchase it to watch with the family!

Paul Newman and his Butch Cassidy director, George Roy Hill, made a very original comedy in this 1977 story of an over-the-hill player/coach (Newman) for a lousy hockey team who gets results when he teaches his players to get dirty. One of the most hilariously profane movies ever to come out of Hollywood, this is the kind of film that makes its own rules as it goes along. Newman is very good, and while Hill goes for the gusto in terms of capturing the violence of this world, his instinct for comedy has never been sharper. Great support from Strother Martin, Paul Dooley, and the rest. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

This clunky road movie about three drag queens (Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes, and John Leguziamo) who get stranded in a sleepy Nebraska town on their way to a beauty contest, is too uplifting for its own good. Released during drag's mid-'90s heyday when RuPaul and the Wigstock documentary were all the rage, <I>To Wong Foo</I> aimed straight for the mainstream with its inoffensive camp and "can't we all get along" moralism. While gay-activist groups howled about straights getting the lead roles in <I>To Wong Foo</I>, in the end the filmmakers really couldn't have done better than this trio of actors. John Leguziamo provides real sass and bite as a Latino (or should we saw Latina?) drag queen, and Wesley Snipes is surprisingly fierce as the imposing leader of the pack. Saddled with a cloying Southern accent and off-kilter wig, Patrick Swayze barely holds his own with his costars, though. <I>To Wong Foo</I> is best viewed as a cultural artifact of a time when it seemed as though drag could rule all tomorrow's parties. <I>--Ethan Brown</I>

Another fun movie that gives great "grins and giggles". It also has some very poignant parts as well. I have love this one for MANY years.

4 out of 5 stars "TO WONG FOO" IGNORES ADVERSITY.......2007-04-30

"To Wong Foo" presents a rose-colored view of the world in which all of our problems can be solved if we just tap
into our inner fabulousness! Why, even the problems of seriously abused housewife CarolAnne (Stockard Channing) are cheerfully swept under the rug. I am not blaming the movie for its optimistic life view and colorful hues. It helps the poor abused Carol Ann that drag Queen Vita Boheme (Patrick Swayze) appears as her "angel" and lays some serious smack down on her pig of a husband (Arliss Howard).
Three drag Queen ends up stranded in some un-named fictional, backwater Podunk town when their Convertible breaks down en route from New York to Hollywood. The ladies, naturally, end up transforming the lives of everybody in town over the course of a single, magical weekend. The ladies are pursued by racist, homophobic Sheriff Dollard (the late Chris Penn) who, we discover in a funny bar scene, is a major closet case!
The premise is slight, but the performances are outstanding. Your enjoyment of the film may depend on how you respond to the leading (heterosexual) men playing the leading (gay men in drag) ladies. Snipes (as Noxemi Jackson) and Leguizamo are especially excellent at bringing their inner Drag Queens out. John Leguizamo is outstanding as Chi Chi Rodreiguiz. The role of Vita Boheme represents a major change of pace for Swayze, previously known for macho roles in "Dirty Dancing" and "RoadHouse." Swayze is only half as convincing and successful as Snipes and Leguizamo, but the good news ladies and gentlemen is that he is every bit as sexy and attractive as Lady Vita Boheme as he is as a man (himself). Hey, I'm not asking Swayze to give me the moon here. He really is very good. Robin Williams also makes a fun and funny cameo appearance.
"To Wong Foo" is so optimistic it might as well be a Disney movie, "The Wizard Of Oz" or "The Sound Of Music." I'm all for films about self-esteem and self-empowerment, as long as the viewer realizes that this level of rosy self-empowerment can be achieved in movies but seldom in real life. This is a perfect movie to watch if your feeling depressed. This movie made me smile and laugh when I was experiencing severe depressions.
I cracked up in uncontrollable laughter when Swayze said, "Oh, what in gay hell?" (is this? as Penn's car is seen behind them on the road). "To Wong Foo" is gay in every sense of the word (emphasis on bright, sunny, colorful, happy) and there is certainly nothing wrong with that. Say "Amen."

5 out of 5 stars HAHAHAHAHA.......2007-03-05

This movie gets you going! The most comedy movie I have ever watched! When I first watched this movie I had pizza and choked me to death when I wasnt trying to laugh so hard. I was shocked that Patrick Swayze dressed up as drag queen and went on the road trip to Hollywood, CA with Wesley and John. I really think Patrick looked hot than Wesley and John tho.

Anybody who has written him off because of his string of stinkers--or anybody who's too young to remember <I>The Goodbye Girl</I>--may be shocked at the accomplishment and nuance of Richard Dreyfuss's performance in <I>Close Encounters of the Third Kind</I>. Here, he plays a man possessed; contacted by aliens, he (along with other members of the "chosen") is drawn toward the site of the incipient landing: Devil's Tower, in rural Wyoming. As in many Spielberg films, there are no personalized enemies; the struggle is between those who have been called and a scientific establishment that seeks to protect them by keeping them away from the arriving spacecraft. The ship, and the special effects in general, are every bit as jaw-dropping on the small screen as they were in the theater (well, almost). Released in 1977 as a cerebral alternative to the swashbuckling science fiction epics then in vogue, <I>Close Encounters</I> now seems almost wholesome in its representation of alien contact and interested less in philosophizing about extraterrestrials than it is in examining the nature of the inner "call." Ultimately a motion picture about the obsession of the driven artist or determined visionary, <I>Close Encounters</I> comes complete with the stock Spielberg wives and girlfriends who seek to tether the dreamy, possessed protagonists to the more mundane concerns of the everyday. So a spectacular, seminal motion picture indeed, but one with gender politics that are all too terrestrial. <I>--Miles Bethany</I>

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Take out the "H" in "Third" and that's what you've got..........2007-06-07

Who likes this movie? How could you possibly make sense of a film like this? Steven Spielberg really messed up this time around, making a movie about space and yet most of it takes place on earth. Duh...what kind of science fiction movie takes place on Earth in the 1970s? This one, I guess.

If you like to see movies about Richard Dreyfus playing with carbs, then you'll love Close Encounters. And special effects? I don't know why they're considered so revolutionary because they're not half as good as anything I saw in ID4 (that's what I call Independence Day) or MIB II (Men in Black II) or iRobot or even Wild Wild West. Apparently in Steven Spielberg's mind all space aliens are going to terrorize our planet after they arrive in a big Simon (complete with flashing colored lights and the annoying four musical notes)

The best thing about this movie is that it ends (sadly after 6 1/2 hours of people climbing on mountains and staring into the sky). Photosynthesis is more fun to watch than this movie. He's lost his skills since Star Wars.

5 out of 5 stars a movie that changed my life.......2007-05-29

When a film so knocks you off your feet everytime you watch it; when a film that is so sensually created and crafted with such magic as only the mastermind of Spielberg can create; when a film can evoke emotions in its watcher and choke them up, without trying to hide it in front of friends, family and the like; when a film can so catch the inner youth of angst when looking up into the nights sky and dreaming with every creative joint you can muster; when a film's cinematograhy can be so visually stunning and so imaginative, that you are completely in awe; that is when you can honestly sit around on some idle Sunday in May, and share the film again with people and everyone around you says they have goosebumps, and you know there is another reason to be alive. That is the way Close Encounters makes me feel; when I was 8, 18 and 28. Spielberg has created such masterpieces that have shaped our lives. I thank him. I thank him.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for any Spielberg Fan!!!.......2007-05-18

Amazing. A visual masterpiece. If you like movies, you need to own this one. The Two-Disc Collector's Edition should be the only way this DVD is packaged and sold!

5 out of 5 stars Glad I got the Collector's Edition.......2007-05-09

I remember watching this movie when it came out in the theaters and watching in on DVD again was almost as good. The 2-disc collector's edition was well worth it because it has all the behind-the-scenes extras such as the making of, deleted scenes, interviews, etc. The video and sound quality were very good. I expected the 30 year-old special effects to look "dated" but they still seemed surprisingly good. I would definitely recommend this movie if you are a sci-fi fan. As always, Amazon's delivery was speedy and the item arrived it excellent condition.

5 out of 5 stars This Is Something Important...........2007-05-08

I am a huge Spielberg fan, but this films has always been one I was the least familiar with, for some reason. I have rediscovered it now, thanks to DVD, and am kicking myself for not getting better acquainted with it after all these years. It isn't a stretch to say that Close Encounters may be the best Alien movie. Spielberg also wrote the film(and why hasn't he written a truckload more?), and it's a wonderful accomplishment still after 30 years. The great Richard Dreyfuss stars as Roy Neery, a middle class, suburban husband and father who has a 'close encounter' when UFO's begin to come into his town of Muncie, Indiana. And what a great scene that is!. Roy and a few others, including single mom Melinda Dillon(A Christmas Story), end up with a connection to the UFO's as the aliens inside try to make contact with earthlings. Spielberg has a great sense of feeling and wonder thru the entire film. He shows us how this could be taken in two ways. One, he gives us the whimsical, fantastical, awe-inspiring side, and with a fantastic sequence in Dillon's house with her son, also gives us how this can be frightening and scary. One look at that scene and you can see how this movie heavily influenced Shyamalan's "Signs". The movie was made 30 years ago, but it holds up strongly. It's 30 year old story and effects are more affective than a lot of the films today with millions of dollars and fancy new technology. Dreyfuss is always good, and he's great here as Neery. Teri Garr plays his wife. The home life aspect of the fillm doesn't work for some, but it's part of what made the movie to me. Seeing how this normal, average joe gets sucked up in this obsession and how it starts to affect the family life. Garr doesn't get a whole lot here, but she seems to get across that she is a woman who doesn't know what to do. The late director Francois Truffaut plays a scientist, along with Bob Balaban, tracking the UFO's and the strange occurences that have happened around the world. The score by Spielberg mainstay, John Williams, is another success in his long cannon of work. Beautiful and haunting, and who will forget those few chords?. The end is still remarkably fresh and amazing, and the mother ship itself is more cool and impressive than a lot of what we can see nowadays in movies. It's grand entrance is still amazing and a great accomplishment in filmmaking. The smaller ships that come and go are equally fun and well done. Close Encounters has a lot of great things going for it. There are a number of great/classic scenes, a wonderful score, good acting, and a sense of awe and wonder that Spielberg is so brilliant at capturing. You gotta love early, 1975-82, Spielberg. The fact that this movie remains to be so good and touching and amazing 30 years on and before all the studio money that goes out nowadays is a testament to the film and Spielberg's talents. A true classic.

Based on the bestseller by Whitney Otto, this film seemed to miss all the poetry and the ephemeral charms of the wispy novel by trying to make a concrete movie out of it. Directed by Jocelyn Moorhouse (who made a similar hash out of <I>A Thousand Acres</I>), the film centers on Winona Ryder, who is debating her impending marriage and decides to make up her mind while spending the summer with her grandmother (Ellen Burstyn). This leads to a variety of encounters with Grandma and her sewing circle (which includes Anne Bancroft, Kate Nelligan, and Maya Angelou, among others), who reminisce about men, love, and marriage. It's put together piecemeal, like a quilt, but the parts add up to a fragmented, unsatisfying whole, despite some solid acting. <I>--Marshall Fine</I>

5 out of 5 stars LOVED THIS MOVIE!.......2007-05-15

This movie has to be one of the best. It shows marriage to be what it really is, and that doesn't mean a fairytale ending. It's a movie I'd show to any of my friends and I would say an all time favorite of mine. It's a must buy!

5 out of 5 stars Love this movie........2007-04-12

I purchased this movie for the simplicity of it and all of the beautiful women who were featured in the movie, notably Maya Angelou, Jean Simmons, and the other beautiful ladies in this film along with Winona Ryder. It's a movie I will watch again and again.

4 out of 5 stars "No rules to follow-go by instinct-and be brave"4 1/2 ****'s.......2007-04-08

One of things about Jocelyn Moorhouse films (PROOF,THE THOUSAND ACRES) is that she knows how to direct scripts that include a multitude of characters that have their own individual stories -which is not always an easy task to accomplish.Moorhouse succeeds brilliantly! The screenplay which was adapted from Whitney Otto's novel tells a tender story of 26 year old Finn (Winina Ryder) and the seven women who have been a part of her life off and on since early childhood. These women have been meeting regularly over at least thirty years in order to make quilts. The magic in making a quilt is "the ability to make the right choices which enhance the other colours, whereas the wrong choices dull the quilt."The end purpose of the quilt is in "seeing beauty in a multiplicity of patches." Throughout this touching and almost magical film filled with poignant performances uniformly, the women devulge their collective life choices one by one to Finn who,not certain of her path in life or her certainty in marrying her fiance, learns from these older women how to possibly choose rightly in all areas in her own life. Each woman has a deep tale of love, desire, betrayal, jealousy, anger and heartbreak, yet each has survived to learn some lessons about love and forgiveness, and it is these life lessons which become the patchwork quilt that they give to Finn. The conclusion:"life has no rules to follow:go by instinct:be brave."
This really is an excellent film and the ever brilliant Thomas Newman has once again composed a heartfelt score to weave into this delicate piece of art. This movie is so reminscent of other films such as STEEL MAGNOLIAS,THE DIVINE SECRETS OF THE YA-YA SISTERHOOD and THE JOY LUCK CLUB that deal with the "collective conscience" of an ensemble of women who are indelibly connected to aid a younger struggling woman.
I personally am not fond of the label "chick flick" being attached to films such as this.AMERICAN QUILT is a story that teaches life lessons to all people about choices and the learning and maturing process that all humans undergo.Perhaps the most interesting character in this film is that of the tortured artist Dean, husband to one of the women. It is through Dean that we see that men are figures too with sensitivies who make the same mistakes and wrong choices that women do,and yet still have the same capacity and need for love and forgiveness.
The film constantly flips back and forth from the past to the present, but Jocelyn Moorhouse keeps every story clear and each character identified and in focus, as well as keeping the films themes ever before us.

4 out of 5 stars patches of life.......2006-12-31

The POINT of the story is that love is often imperfect but it is up to each person to decide to salvage the good in a relationship. The main plot is that Winona's character, Finn, is recently engaged but she has a problem committing - not only to her fiance, but to a topic for her thesis, and so on. She's got some misconceptions about what life and love are about. She goes to spend the summer with her grandmother and great aunt; the women of their quilting bee see her confusion and open up to her about their own experiences with love. Every story involves pain, most involve infidelity. However, these women show Finn how they have patched together a life of contentment, i.e. a patchwork quilt.

The quilts in the movie are beautiful; however, not a lot is said about quilting. It's basically the motif. The bonuses that I have are not worth paying extra for - cast bios (I mean, if you are reading this, you could fine more online) and a few notes about the production. I was disappointed that there was not much information on the quilts and quilters that worked on them; I know I've seen articles on it here or there. I think this is one of the few movies where, if you like it, you probably REALLY would have enjoyed the director commentary, on things like the quilts, the locations, the era, the actors, etc.

Winona Ryder is the weakest actor is this movie; the rest of the ensemble in incredible, especially Ellen Burstyn, Anne Bancroft, Alfre Woodard, and Maya Angelou; there are also many great actors in small parts (Clare Danes, Samantha Mathis, Joanna Going, Dermot Mulroney, Kate Capshaw...). All in all, it is a good movie that does have a point!

5 out of 5 stars Does not touch the Otto novel.......2006-12-06

I give this movie five stars for what it tried to do. I really think it was an impossible task to live up to what Otto was able to be in the book. So I don't begrudge anyone for making a movie that was not up to snuff with it or even a made for TV movie really. Actually, it did remind me of this one where there's a boy in a plastic breathing bubble. Can't recall it's exact name, but it starred a young John Travolta and had a heartbreaking song at the end of it. The lyrics were something like: "What would you say, if I up and ran away ... " as he rides away on a horse with the love interest .. who was that redhead who was in a ton of stuff in the 70s but I don't recall her name or if she's been in anything since then.

Anyway, I love Winona Ryder and thought she stole the movie ... and possibly some scarves.

A handful of people in the San Fernando Valley are having one hell of a day. TV mogul Earl Partridge (Jason Robards) is on his deathbed; his trophy wife (Julianne Moore) is popping pills with alarming frequency. Earl's nurse (Philip Seymour Hoffman) is trying desperately to get in touch with Earl's only son, sex guru Frank T.J. Mackey (Tom Cruise), who's about to have his carefully constructed past blown by a TV reporter (April Grace). Whiz kid Stanley (Jeremy Blackman) is being goaded by his selfish dad into breaking the record for the game show What Do Kids Know? Meanwhile, Stanley's predecessor, the grown-up quiz kid Donnie Smith (William H. Macy) has lost his job and is nursing a severe case of unrequited love. And the host of What Do Kids Know?, the affable Jimmy Gator (Philip Baker Hall), like Earl, is dying of cancer, and his attempt to reconcile with his cokehead daughter (Melora Walters) fails miserably. She, meanwhile, is running hot and cold with a cop (John C. Reilly) who would love to date her, if she can sit still for long enough. And over it all, a foreboding sky threatens to pour something more than just rain.

This third feature from Paul Thomas Anderson (<I>Boogie Nights</I>) is a maddening, magnificent piece of filmmaking, and it's an ensemble film to rank with the best of Robert Altman--every little piece of the film means something, and it's solidly there for a reason. Deftly juggling a breathtaking ensemble of actors, Anderson crafts a tale of neglectful parents, resentful children, and love-starved souls that's amazing in scope, both thematically and emotionally. Part of the charge of <I>Magnolia</I> is seeing exactly how may characters Anderson can juggle, and can he keep all those balls in air (indeed he can, even if it means throwing frogs into the mix). And it's been far too long since we've seen a filmmaker whose love of making movies is so purely joyful, and this electric energy is reflected in the actors, from Cruise's revelatory performance to Reilly's quietly powerful turn as the moral center of the story. While at three hours it's definitely not suited to everyone's taste, <I>Magnolia</I> is a compelling, heartbreaking, ultimately hopeful mediation on the accidents of chance that make up our lives. Featuring eight wonderful songs by Aimee Mann, including "Save Me." <I>--Mark Englehart</I>

Description

An intriguing and entertaining study in characters going through varying levels of crisis and introspection. This psychological drama leads you in several different directions, weaving and intersecting various subplots and characters, from a brilliant Tom Cruise, as a self-proclaimed pied-piper, to a child forced to go on a TV game show and the pressures he faces from a ruthless father.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars A miss.......2007-05-25

The reviewer who said this movie was a 3 hour downer is right. This movie plot turns on the influences the characters have on one another and how their lives all have common roots. But, if this is the point, it really misses the mark.

I found I could not empathize with any of the characters. Tom Cruise's character was very strange, and I sincerely did not understand his role. But the same goes for many of the characters. Magnolia could have withstood some serious editing. Many scenes were unnecessary, and the movie drug out way too long. Also, if you have a distaste (as I do) for movies which use profanity so flippantly that each curse word loses its power and meaning, you will be disgusted within the first 15 minutes of this film. I considered turning the movie off after two hours of watching, but felt I should finish it up since I had already invested so much time. I shouldn't have, though. The ending is one of the biggest cop-outs (not to mention completely illogical) I've seen in modern film. If anyone understands the significance in 'raining frogs', let me know. And don't let the cast trick you into watching it. Honestly, my opinion of the judgment of some of the actors has actually decreased since viewing this film.

I felt this film really had no plot, no direction, no significance. I rarely give anything 1 star, but I felt that I wasted 3 hours of my life watching this film.

Stay far far away.

3 out of 5 stars A 3-hour downer.......2007-05-24

These intertwining tales are full of anger, tragedy, obscenity, incontinence, and a rain of frogs. Where is the joy? Where (except in the final minute) is the redemption of the human spirit? Can the world really be this messed up - and even if it is, how is this entertainment?

Sorry. I was looking for drama and interesting stories; I got 3+ hours of depression and despair. Despite the fine acting by most of the cast, I truly don't understand what anyone would like about this movie.

3 out of 5 stars Tries a little too hard........2007-05-23

Magnolia is the story of a dying man (Jason Robards)who wants to see his estranged son one last time. Julianne Moore overacts as the former gold digger wife who has grown to genuinely love her husband too late. Wracked with shame, Moore's character is suicidal with guilt for her past as her husband lies on his death bed. Tom Cruise is the estranged son who makes his living as a mysogonistic and unhinged motivational speaker teaching men (who are a mix of Promise Keepers meets Snoop Dog)how to manipulate women into casual sex.

Besides the main plot of the spooky, croaking, dying man and his guilt ridden wife, there is the story of a naive and dim witted policeman's (John C. Riley) attraction to an emotionally unstable coke head. Several other stories intersect including William H. Macy as a washed up former child quiz show phenom, a present day version of the same, and a bitter aging, hedonist game show host who's done one to many television shows.

Personally, I would award Julianne Moore a lifetime achievement award for over acting, and Magnolia only adds to her body of work, but Cruise, as usual, is riveting and spell binding. John C. Riley and Phillip Seymore Hoffman (as the dying man's caregiver) alone are enough to make the movie worth watching.

Manolia is not for everyone but if you like movies that don't come from the Hollywood cookie cutting machine, you should give it a chance. Manolia just tries way to hard to be thought provoking and quirky but it's still draws you in.

5 out of 5 stars one of my top 5 favorite films of all time.......2007-04-25

I can't say enough about this film---it's got everything and is presented artfully. Just get it and watch it with an open heart. It's amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, despite Tom Cruise and the frogs.......2007-04-06

It's one of those movies that I will watch over and over again and see something new each time. So many stellar performances, such humane characters, beautiful music and great story lines. Two minor disappointments: Tom Cruise playing himself again and the Frogs (I hate to watch animals die, even if it's surreal).

5 out of 5 stars A Christmas Story.......2007-05-12

I laughed so hard the first time I saw this movie, I fell out of my chair! The Bumpas' were our neighbors.

5 out of 5 stars The best Christmas ever.......2007-04-18

I really believe when the history of the movie industry is finally completed, four movies will be tied for best Christmas movie. They will be; "It's a Wonderful Life", "Miracle On 34th Street", "a Christmas Story", and 'Home Alone". Second place will go to one of the many versions of Dicken's "A Christmas Carol". "Christmas Story" is my personal favorite of the four.
I was somewhat surprised that the story was set in the forties. I had always that it was in the fifties when I was in my preteens. On looking closer, I see that it could have just as easily been the thirties, forties, fifties, or even the early sixties. The movie is really set at a time outside of history called "childhood". The true wonder of this movie is how vividly it brings back memories of early youth, no matter when you were born.
Give full credit to Jean Shepherd. The measure of the success of this movie is the faithfulness in which it brings his characters and stories to life. His narrative in voice over is one of the highlights of the film. The wonderful combination of sentiment and satire sparkles through the show like bubbles in a glass of ginger ale. Not too sweet and just sharp enough.
Enough said about the movie itself. It's a classic and you need it in your collection. You owe it to your family.
This version, the twentieth anniversary, double disc special edition is exceptionally good. After viewing the movie, go back and view it with the commentary by Bob Clarke and Peter Billingsley. That alone is worth the price of the set. But, that's not all. There's also a whole extra special feature disk with goodies for the whole family. There's the true story of the the Daisy Red Rider BB gun, a featurette showing the making of the movie and.. Wonder of Wonders... a trip to the Factory that makes the Glorious LAMP. There are also some nice interactive games for the kids, but the biggest treat on the second disk is the audio readings by Jean Shepherd of two of the stories from which the movies were made. I don't care if you did just see the movie. He will hold you spellbound in front of the image of an old radio. He is that good!
I wish that I had more stars to give this set. It is AWESOME!

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite christmas movies.......2007-04-16

Must watch this movie every xmas no matter if you've seen it a thousand times. Like the bonus cd but wish they would have done more interviews. Still a great DVD set.

5 out of 5 stars Daddy is not going to kill Ralphie!.......2007-04-11

We are many years removed from the 1983 release of A Christmas Story. Ralphie's all grown up, Darren McGavin has passed on, "Flick" entered the adult film business only to leave it in 2000. All these changes in the world, but the old saying is true. The more things change, the more they remain the same.

The one thing that has remained the same is the timeless quality of this movie. All Ralphie wants for Christmas is his Red Rider BB Gun... Santa, his teacher... heck, even his own MOTHER battle against him, each lamenting "You'll shoot your eye out!"

Undaunted, Ralphie carries on, hoping somebody will see the light and let him have his coveted BB GUN!

I won't spoil the ending, but Ralphie does learn that Christmas is more than just what you get or where you go. It's not just about what you eat. It's about with whom you eat.

When a memory is so powerfully branded onto a person's soul, it makes for a timeless retelling. This story provides just such a gift.

Amazon.com essential video

Barbra Streisand's best film as a director is helped enormously by one of Nick Nolte's finest performances. Nolte plays a football coach who is estranged from his wife (Blythe Danner) and who enters into an affair with the psychiatrist (Streisand) of his suicidal sister (Melinda Dillon). Streisand is acceptable in her star turn, but behind the camera she paces the story very well and provides lots of room for Nolte to inhabit his burdened but likable character. George Carlin is a bit token as a gay New Yorker, although Jason Gould (Streisand's son) is good as a struggling teen in desperate need of a father figure. The whole film is worth watching just to see a great moment near the end where Nolte stands on a street, a bit slump-shouldered and wearing a look of sad resolve. It's great acting at its most minimal. --Tom Keogh

1 out of 5 stars Horrible!!!.......2007-06-01

This is a savage ruination of a wonderful book. I don't know why Pat Conroy let Babs ruin his masterpiece...but ruin it she did.

Read the novel. Skip this mess.

5 out of 5 stars Prince of Tides.......2007-05-07

I didn't notice this was the video. I have not received it yet but the book was absolutely the best I have ever read.

5 out of 5 stars I Laugh at the New Yorker's Review of this Film .......2007-05-04

I had to laugh at the review the New Yorker gave to this film and to everyone and everything that seemed to be involved in the making of it. They came off like a spurned lover that was left for a much prettier woman, or someone who was stood up for the prom two years in a row. Talk about bitter. I think their review has more to do with the New Yorker's anger about Pat Conroy's statements made by his character, Tom Wingo, concerning New York and the New Yorker being less than desirable.

Tom Wingo makes them look a bit foolish and I believe that is why the New Yorker has given the writing of this movie such a bad review. They even go so far as to bash the music. The music in this film was lovely, it went beautifully with the amazing South Carolina cinematography. The New Yorker does try to say that the movie would have been fine if it weren't for the writer, Pat Conroy and his book. But, the book is far superior to the movie in so many ways. The movie is amazing, but as with many movies there is not enough time to include everything.

Pat Conroy sings a song of southern healing, of love and regret, like no other author I have ever read, and he does it all with humor. He is not a metropolitan man. He is a great southern writer, and that is what the New Yorker hates so much about Pat Conroy. But, Mr. Conroy is more than just a great southern writer, he is a great writer from the south, and that is what the New Yorker hates most about Pat Conroy.

Do not pass by this great film, The Prince of Tides, and do not, whatever you may do with your life before you die, do not pass by your life without first reading The Prince of Tides by Mr. Pat Conroy. It will make your life a better one if you allow it to, and not every book is capable of that.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Nolte.......2007-01-30

Not too bad for the most part, though the ending is pretty unconvincing. The cynical, distant Nick Nolte goes to NYC after his twin sister (played by Melinda Dillon) there tries to commit suicide. He begins seeing her psychiatrist (Barbra Streisand) and through flashbacks we learn about the demons of his family's past - all of which he's learned to suppress his whole life. Conveniently Nolte's wife (Blythe Danner) takes up with another man while Nolte is falling in love with Streisand; at the end he returns to his wife though he still loves Streisand. Nolte is excellent in his role, and as is often the case when he's on screen, his persona dominates every scene he's in; Streisand is fairly bland in comparison. The movie begins to show its weaknesses after Nolte and Streisand fall in love: where the movie should be exploring their love and "obligations" in a hard, meaningful way, it only goes soft and paisley romantic. Why Nolte goes back to his wife, why she even wants him back, is hardly touched on; instead we get the throwaway lines, "You love her more," says Streisand; "No," replies Nolte, "just longer." Not a whole lot of substance there.

5 out of 5 stars streisand...love her.......2007-01-16

Because i love Barbra Streisand, she can do no wrong, great movie. seen it 6 times and will watch it again
