4 out of 5 stars Leonard and Frankenheimer get down and dirty.......2007-06-20

52 Pick-Up was one of the few rays of light in the dark days when every screen adaptation of an Elmore Leonard novel would go horribly wrong and when John Frankenheimer's name on the credits wasn't exactly a guarantee of quality any more, although it sank quickly due to a botched marketing campaign (the producers decided to play up the good reviews by touting it as `The best film this season from Cannon,' which is a bit like boasting about having the least contagious form of VD). A riff on his earlier Western The Tall T, this sees businessman Roy Scheider set up by a trio of blackmailers who, not taking kindly to him confessing his affair to his wife rather than pay up, murder his girlfriend with his gun so as not to miss out on their payday, only for Scheider to turn them against each other. While it's no Out of Sight, it's an effectively seedy L.A. thriller with a couple of outstanding supporting turns by John Glover and a seriously mucked-up and dangerous Clarence Williams III.

No extras at all, but it does have a decent 1.85:1 widescreen transfer.

5 out of 5 stars interested in a jag.......2006-10-02

52 pick up is a tightly woven film noir that builds the suspense right from the outset. Harry and Barbara
Mitchell (Roy Scheider and Ann Margret) play an upscale professional couple in their mid fifties. Harry owns a steel manufacturing business while Barbara is an evironmental oversight board chairman with political connections. As the film begins Harry is sandbagged by three individuals who entrap him with a video showing
him in an extramarital affair with a young woman named Cinny. (Kelly Preston) As the blackmail scenario
unfolds. Harry is ordered to pay a large sum of money by the ringleader of the trio. Alan Raimey (John Glover)
with sidekicks Leo Franks (Robert Trebor) and Bobby Shy. (Clarence Williams III) After informing his lawyer
Jim O'Boyle, (Lonny Chapman) Harry decides not to be intimidated and dismiss the trio as folly. As the story moves along Harry and Barbara develop a determination to deal with the trio. As in the tradition of original film noir Harry and Barbara are trapped in a Catch 22 scenario with the lowly trio. Frankenheimer builds up the intensity and gets excellent performances from the entire cast.
John Glover is superb as the homoerotic protagonist Alan Raimey as well as Robert Trebor and Clarence
Williams III as the other two components of the trio. Alan's psychosis becomes a fulcrum for destruction.
Meanwhile Bobby Shy's girlfriend Doreen (Vanity) cuts both sides of the fence with equal disdain for Harry and Bobby while concealing the triangle that has developed between Harry, Cinny, and herself. The scenes are fastmoving with crisp and candid dialogue. Frankenheimer holds nothing back with realism and taut direction. This film takes one on an emotional rollercoaster with no gimmicks from start to finish. 52 Pick Up
is a great example of modernist flim noir and I believe that is an excellent film. Transfer to dvd in widescreen format is excellent.
Audio in 5.1 surround sound is really incredible and adds a new dimension
to the viewers experience. All of these factors engage the viewer
at an incredibly intense level.

5 out of 5 stars "Gotta lot a mileage on her".......2005-10-08

I've been waiting for this movie to be released on dvd in widescreen with extras for years. I hope Roy Scheider knows about this non release. The movie has been forgotten or hung up for whatever reason and it's a damn shame. The acting is superior all around. John Glover plays one of the best weird, cleverly evil criminals of filmdom. Yes I'd go that far. The movie has a mixture of many elements. One element captures perfectly the decadent street sex of the eighties. Also mixed in between Roy Scheiders affluent fish out of water charactor are drugs, kidnapping, revenge, love, lust, redemption and betrayal. Also added to the boiling pot are an unusual assembly of actors. Some are the epitome of the eighties. Others are old screen stars, decent tv actors, then unknown names, great charactor actors and even a "cameo" by a renowned porn "star". This caldron, well paced and plotted really nails it. Some may say I'm overratting it, and maybe I am a bit, but hey, I'm the reviewer. 52 Pickup is well done, particually now in a nostalgic way. Forget the VHS tape(even laserdisc). DVD only. Hang in there sport. [UPDATE 6/9/07: Im sure Roy Schieder does know what happening with this film. I have a multi region dvd player and have finally seen this classic on dvd. It can be purchased through Amazon as a region 2 disc. Several web sites have also pointed out that it will be released in the good old USA this summer. The region 2 disc picture and audio are just ok. Im hoping the region 1 release will be much improved with seriously needed extras. "She still cooks." ]

4 out of 5 stars A nasty little gem..."Hey SPORT".......2005-08-10

I saw this in the theaters when it first came out in the 80s, not expecting much, but then - BAM! - this nasty little gem of a thriller delivers thrills in spades. JOHN GLOVER creates one of the most chilling, yet hilarious, villains in film history - and the film's most infamous sequence - the videotape replay of Cindy's snuff-movie murder that Glover forces Scheider to watch in horror SITTING THE SAME CHAIR WHERE SHE WAS KILLED! - still never fails to disturb the viewer. Frankenheimer directs how the best do: so seamless and suble and unobtrusive, you never notice him tightening the screws right up until a white-knuckle climax. I cannot quite believe this film is still NOT ON DVD, even though the shelves are crammed with lesser product. C'mon, guys, get with it! Once you see 52 PICK-UP, you will never forget it.

HBO caused a stir when it aired <I>If These Walls Could Talk</I>, a portrait of three women from three generations (all who occupied the same house at various times) who had unwanted pregnancies. HBO utilizes the same gimmick in the sequel, this time telling the story of women who love women.

The three stories of <I>If These Walls Could Talk 2</I> are uneven. Far and away the most powerful and moving story is the first, taking place in 1961, starring Vanessa Redgrave as a woman "widowed" when her partner of 50 years suddenly dies. Redgrave is phenomenal, and her piece alone makes this sequel worth watching. The 1972 portion stars Michelle Williams, who finds dealing with the sexual politics of the gay community increasingly more complex when she falls in love with a boyish woman (played by Chloë Sevigny). The most modern piece, taking place in 2000, portrays a contemporary lesbian couple (Sharon Stone and Ellen DeGeneres) determined to have a baby. The light nature of the story detracts from the more serious issues of the earlier segments. Despite the mixed fare, HBO once again proves itself on the cutting edge of moviemaking, with this rather daring film that will both provoke and entertain. <I>--Jenny Brown</I>

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-03-16

I love this film- it hits on numerous isssues without being too preachy. At different points, the film is funny, cute, serious, hot, and numerous other things. It's a classic.

5 out of 5 stars HBO Rocks Part 2.......2007-01-14

This was an HBO original movie broadcast in 2000. This movie follows three lesbian stories in three different time periods. Vanessa Redgrave stars as a lesbian widow in 1961. Chloe Sevigny and Michelle Williams star as feminists in 1971. Sharon Stone and Ellen DeGeneres star as a modern day lesbian couple trying to have a baby. I found the story of Vanessa Redgrave to be the most touching. It speaks to the need for legal rights for same sex couples and a need for understanding.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-11-23

A beautiful, touching movie. Well directed and acted. The first story with Vanessa Redgrave is very touching. All three stories have a completely different view of lesbians and are very good. The third story with Ellen & Sharon is very humorous. With stars like Vanessa, Ellen & Sharon, how can this be anything but a very worthwhile film and well acted.

5 out of 5 stars IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK 2.......2006-11-06

I LOVE THIS MOVIE A BIT MORE THAN #1 MOVIE "IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK", MAYBE CAUSE MORE UP TO DATE, AND MORE I COULD RELATE TO BEING IN MY LATE 40'S. BUT I COULD DEFINATELY RELATE WITH EACH OF THE PERIODS IN THIS MOVIE. THEY ALL SEEMED SO REAL TO ME. I COULD WATCH THIS MOVIE OVER AND OVER, WHICH I DO. ALL THE TIME.

4 out of 5 stars Two out of three ain't bad........2006-09-07

If These Walls Could Talk 2 explores female same sex relationships in different eras, but in the same house.

The first story deals with an old woman who loses her longtime lover due to a fall from a ladder and the eventual death. The dead woman's son and daughter-in-law and granddaughter show up and basically take what is lawfully theirs, the house and its possessions. The old woman is left with nothing and is forced to start over somewhere else despite being in her 60s. I kept thinking to myself, all of this could have been avoided had the dead woman made a will. This story basically deals with how same sex couples don't have the same legal rights. Vanessa Redgrave, who plays the left-behind lover, can't even visit her companion in the hospital room because she's not a relative or spouse. This was definitely the heartwrenching one of the three vignettes.

The second story takes place during the women's feminist movement. Some college lesbian girls go to a gay bar where one of them, Michelle Williams, meets Chloe Sevigny and a romance develops. The only thing, Sevigny's character is butch. And Williams' friends have a problem with a woman acting like a man in order to live the lesbian lifestyle. They see it as defeating the purpose of being a lesbian in the first place. Pretty good performances all around. Nia Long and Natasha Leonne are in the story: both who have played lesbians in other movies.

The third segment deals with a lesbian couple trying to have a baby. It stars Ellen Degeneres and Sharon Stone. This one is boring. All you see is frantic anticipation and turkey basters. There is a surprising steamy sex scene. It's surprising because I never thought a sex scene with Ellen Degeneres could be steamy. I applaud Anne Heche as a director for being able to pull that off. But, it's still a less compelling story than the other two.

All in all, If These Walls...2 is a good movie. It's certainly more tolerable than its predecessor.

At the time of its release, Mission: Impossible III's box office was plagued by the publicity backlash against couch-jumping star Tom Cruise. It's too bad, because this third installment of the spy thriller franchise deserved a better reception than it got. First-time feature director J.J. Abrams (bigwig TV director/producer of Lost, Alias, & Felicity) proves more than able-bodied in creating a Mission: Impossible that's leaner and less over-stylized than John Woo's sequel and less confusing than Brian De Palma's original. Plot is still a throwaway here (Cruise's Ethan Hunt rescues his kidnapped former trainee and works to steal a device that... well, we don't really know what it does, but it's something about mass destruction that costs $850 million), but the action sequences, particularly one where Ethan faces down a helicopter on a bridge and gets flung hard against the side of a car, are particularly impressive since Cruise, at 44, is still doing most of his own stunts and shows no hint of the weathered look that's struck his action-star peers. (Though no <I>Mission: Impossible stunt will ever be quite as simultaneously nail-biting and funny as the first film's wire-dangling break-in of CIA headquarters.)

Mission: Impossible III boasts a pedigreed cast, particularly Oscar® winner Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote) as baddie arms dealer Owen Davian. Hoffman plays Owen all teeth-clenched and cool, especially when threatening to kill Ethan in front of his lovely new wife (Michelle Monaghan) who has no idea of his spy life. But in his first action-film lead role, Hoffman's almost too calm and collected to really make a memorable villain, especially when the rest of the cast--Ving Rhames (the only other cast member to return for all three films), Asian film star Maggie Q, and an underused Jonathan Rhys-Meyers--are a highlight as Ethan's IMF team. Mission: Impossible is still fun popcorn spy fare, and if Cruise chooses to end the franchise here, at least he goes out on a high note. --Ellen A. Kim

Description

4 out of 5 stars Utterly unheard of.......2007-06-14

Not very often do the studios come up with a 3rd installment of a film that surpasses it's predecessors. I felt that this was one of those rare cases. I was one of the minority who was not blown away by the first MI. I was even more dissappointed by the second MI. The second one was nothing but a "Cruise love-in". God forbid that they shot a single second of footage that didn't include Tom.
With these memories, I avoided this 3rd MI film. Well, today I had the day off and it was on Pay channels. I sat down and was prepared to be underwhelmed. I was pleasantly surprised. The film again relies heavily on Cruise. But, this time the story is greatly improved by the presence of Lawrence Fishburne and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Back again is the tremendous Ving Rhames. All these characters make for a compelling story. There is also the presence of the nifty gadgets and urgency we expect from MI films.
Overall I found the entire film to be much more enjoyable than the previous MI's and would recommend it to anyone.

1 out of 5 stars how dissapointing...........2007-06-13

Dissapointed, not that I had real high hopes for this one. I'm a little embarassed to say I watched this movie all the way through. The cgi was impressive, but talk about a cruise- fest. The best part was the bomb in keri russel's head exploding. The bridge scene was very cool, but the acting sucked and tom cruise is either running, crying, shooting, or base jumping about 98 percent of the time. Buy this one used if you must see it, but a scanner darkly is actually worth your money.

5 out of 5 stars Not a Couch in Sight.......2007-05-28

I avoided the third installment of Mission Impossible for the same reason a lot of people did: Tom Cruise. It's a tradeoff: a bankable star becomes a liability if you happen to dislike him. Of course, the people who don't like these big budget stars are usually not substantial enough to affect sales. Given Sumner Redstone's, CEO of Paramount, decision to cut ties with Cruise, it seems that his outrageous antics finally caught up with him.

And that's a shame, because Mission Impossible III is really good.

The problems I've had with the other installments revolved around what happened to the original conceit of the series: it was a carefully planned operation performed by a team. Being privy to the operation in the beginning, we worried for each agent as they performed their particularly dangerous and important task. This is the whole symbolism of the burning fuse: the agents light the fuse, but the conclusion is an inevitable explosion. In short, we knew what to expect and got it at every episode, even if there were a few twists and turns along the way.

Thus making Mission Impossible a star vehicle is against the spirit of the series. There's no one star agent; there can't be, because every agent is important. Right? The first two movies forgot that point.

In MI3, J.J. Abrams brings the series back to its roots. In essence, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) performs a standard mission extraction. They pull it off perfectly. There's just one problem: the bad guy (Owen Davian, played with chilling aplomb by Philip Seymour Hoffman) refuses to be interrogated. Utterly unafraid, he begins interrogating his interrogator. And suddenly, MI3 has been turned on its ear.

What if everything went right, asks Abrams, and it still all went horribly wrong?

What's so refreshing about MI3 is that even when Hunt defects, even when he's not sure who's on his side, his team sticks by him. When he goes rogue, his team goes with him. And when he goes on a mission to stop Davian, his teammates are right there in the mix, risking their lives for their leader.

There are some amazing scenes, including a sliding fight on the rooftop of an office skyscraper and a helicopter battle in a wind turbine farm. Add into the mix a ticking time bomb and the tension and action keeps the audience on its toes.

By never forgetting what made Mission Impossible great, Abrams brings the magic back. And Cruise delivers without hopping on a single couch.

A sad, melancholy ache pervades <I>Brokeback Mountain</I>, Ang Lee's haunting, moving film that, like his other movies, explores societal constraints and the passions that lurk underneath. This time, however, instead of taking on ancient China, 19th-century England, or '70s suburbia, Lee uses the tableau of the American West in the early '60s to show how two lovers are bound by their expected roles, how they rebel against them, and the repercussions for each of doing so--but the romance here is between two men. Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) are two itinerant ranchers looking for work in Wyoming when they meet and embark on a summer sheepherding job in the shadow of titular Brokeback Mountain. The taciturn Ennis, uncommunicative in the extreme, finds himself opening up around the gregarious Jack, and the two form a bond that surprisingly catches fire one cold night out in the wilderness. Separating at the end of the summer, each goes on to marry and have children, but a reunion years later proves that, if anything, their passion for each other has grown significantly. And while Jack harbors dreams of a life together, the tight-lipped Ennis is unable to bring himself to even consider something so revolutionary.

Its open, unforced depiction of love between two men made <I>Brokeback</I> an instant cultural touchstone, for both good and bad, as it was tagged derisively as the "gay cowboy movie," but also heralded as a breakthrough for mainstream cinema. Amidst all the hoopla of various agendas, though, was a quiet, heartbreaking love story that was both of its time and universal--it was the quintessential tale of star-crossed lovers, but grounded in an ever-changing America that promised both hope and despair. Adapted by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana from Annie Proulx's short story, the movie echoes the sparse bleakness of McMurtry's <I>The Last Picture Show</I> with its fading of the once-glorious West; but with Lee at the helm, it also resembles <I>The Ice Storm</I>, as it showed the ripple effects of a singular event over a number of people. As always, Lee's work with actors is unparalleled, as he elicits graceful, nuanced performances from Michelle Williams and Anne Hathaway as the wives affected overtly and subliminally by their husbands' affair, and Gyllenhaal brings surprising dimensions to a character that could have easily just been a puppy dog of a boy. It's Ledger, however, who's the breakthrough in the film, and his portrait of an emotionally repressed man both undone and liberated by his feelings is mesmerizing and devastating. Spare in style but rich with emotion, <I>Brokeback Mountain</I> earns its place as a classic modern love story. <I>--Mark Englehart</I>

Description

Brokeback Mountain is a sweeping epic that explores the lives of two young men, a ranch hand and a rodeo cowboy, who meet in the summer of 1963 and unexpectedly forge a lifelong connection. The complications, joys and heartbreak they experience provide a testament to the endurance and power of love. Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal deliver emotionally charged, remarkably moving performances in "a movie that is destined to become one of the great classics of our time" (Clay Smith, The Insider).

5 out of 5 stars Art.......2007-06-23

Over time we have seen expressions of beauty created by men and women that we want to perserve. In our time it's not so much a painting as it is and in the future will be certain films. This is one of those films. It's not groundbreaking as one is often lead to believe because it's not really approaching the idea of love that differently. When two people are in love there is nothing that can stop the expression of that love. This is an example of that desire to jump the hurdles. Someone said that the two shirts that went on sale on ebay and sold for 101,000 dollars was because they were the ruby slippers of our time. Well I believe is film is the Romeo and Juliet of our time, and who cannot help but fall under the spell of that.

That said, I've read all about the mumbling (from those below) that Heath Ledger did during his performance. The mumbling is suppose to represent is inability to let go and be with his lover, it is the phyiscal manifestation of the feelings inside.

As for Jake his performance is so honest, so urgent. His need to be with Ennis is so powerful that he'll risk everything.

The rest of the cast is supurb and the story is faithful to the amazing short story. The direction from Ang Lee is as usual impecable and awe inspiring.

It will break your heart but it will also remind why we risk our heart in the first place. For those few moments not where you're waiting to begin what is suppose to be the "happy part of the rest of your life" but the happy moments we have for just a moment with that one person we can't live without.

4 out of 5 stars Western Skies.......2007-06-18

Well, after 1000 reviews, who needs my opin ion? I'm simply a country boy who took this film to heart, sadly know a few men whose lives are/were like this, even today. But as a film itself, it's a wonderfully simple, plaintive accomplishment.

I didn't have a problem understanding Heath's mumbled "ennis" accent. It's an all-too familiar tone from uptight men who can't open their hearts.

The massive hype and hoopla of this film having settled down, perhaps the viewing public will someday see the other hundreds of films with gay characters; granted, not all better, but more uplifting, and not so predictably tragic.

A nice film, based on a great short story. But when ever gay actors will be able to do as much, that'd be nice.

Can you imagine white actors playing African-Americans who suffer oppression? No.

Well, then, why does it have to be the same for gay cinema?

Who knows. anyway, not much special in the DVD. widescreen is the only way to see it, for the cinematography.

I liked watching it in Spanish, too.

1 out of 5 stars mumbled lines and bad acting.......2007-05-30

The only redeeming thing about this movie is the scenery. I am not giving this movie one star because of the sexual content. I am giving this movie one star because of the acting. Heath Ledger mumbled his lines do badly I could not understand a word he was saying, and I watched this move twice. A cardboard standup would have displayed more acting ability than Jake Gyllenhaal. My advice, don't bother.

5 out of 5 stars Courageous and Tender.......2007-05-29

Well boy howdy; I finally got around to viewing "Brokeback Mountain". During the early part of it, I thought it a bit slow and began to wonder if it wasn't past my bedtime. At the same time however, I thought the cinematography was stunning; making me wish I was in a proper cinema (as opposed to seeing it on my 20" screen).

Gradually I opened up to the story and the way it was presented, and lo and behold, by the end of the film I felt it worthy of the praise it has received. And in retrospect, I believe that it HAD to be revealed just as it was, in that somewhat plodding cowboy style. Kind of made me think of "A Prairie Home Companion"'s characters Dusty & Lefty from *The Lives of the Cowboys* (couldn't help myself; if you're a PHC listener, you'll know what I mean).

Sometimes I was frustrated by the behavior of the two lead characters, but that doesn't diminish the quality of the movie. For example, I wanted to suggest (before their subsequent marriages), that Jack & Ennis just DUMP that cowboy life and head for San Francisco or NYC or some other place more congenial to their relationship. But alas, there were other things to be considered as well; not the least of which would be the backgrounds and limited education (and hence opportunity) for these two, especially Ennis with his taciturn manner.

But my point is that in mulling over the possibilities, I took the characters of Jack & Ennis very seriously, as they were very convincingly portrayed by Gyllenhaal and Ledger. I forgot that Heath Ledger was Australian; he had that mumbly mealy-mouthed American cowboy bit down pat. And Ang Lee's direction turned my early-on yawns into rapt attention. Now I would like to watch the movie a second time (at least); something I seldom do. Please bear this in mind if you're tempted to give up on "Brokeback Mountain" halfway through, because you're "bored". By the way, the basis for this movie is a short story written for "The New Yorker" by Annie Proulx.

Also I'd just like to mention that if a gay man in the U.S. West had limited opportunities in 1963, it seemed to me that women (gay OR straight) had even LESS to choose from (sigh). But that's a discussion for another day...

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous film!.......2007-05-24

Every time I watch this film it breaks my heart. It is one of the most moving I have ever see. Of course Heath Ledger is great and deserved the Oscar for his work but again, each time I see him I think that Jake Gyllenhall could have been nominated for best actor also. He is really good. Wonderful work by two young actors. The whole movie defines what it means to make a picture.

This modern-day teen update of <I>Les Liaisons Dangereuses</I> suffered at the hands of both critics and moviegoers thanks to its sumptuous ad campaign, which hyped the film as an arch, highly sexual, faux-serious drama (not unlike the successful, Oscar-nominated <I>Dangerous Liaisons</I>). In fact, this intermittently successful sudser plays like high comedy for its first two-thirds, as its two evil heroes, rich stepsiblings Kathryn (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Sebastian (Ryan Phillippe), blithely ruin lives and reputations with hearts as black as coal. Kathryn wants revenge on a boyfriend who dumped her, so she befriends his new intended, the gawky Cecile (Selma Blair), and gets Sebastian to deflower the innocent virgin. The meat of the game, though, lies in Sebastian's seduction of good girl Annette (a down-to-earth Reese Witherspoon), who's written a nationally published essay entitled "Why I Choose to Wait." If he fails, Kathryn gets his precious vintage convertible; if he wins, he gets Kathryn--in the sack. When the movie sticks to the merry ruination of Kathryn and Sebastian's pawns, it's highly enjoyable: Gellar in particular is a two-faced manipulator extraordinaire, and Phillippe, usually a black hole, manages some fun as a hipster Eurotrash stud. Most pleasantly surprising of all is Witherspoon, who puts a remarkably self-assured spin on a character usually considered vulnerable and tortured (see Michelle Pfeiffer in <I>Dangerous Liaisons</I>). Unfortunately, writer-director Roger Kumble undermines everything he's built up with a false ending that's true to neither the reconceived characters nor the original story--revenge is a dish best served cold, not cooked up with unnecessary plot twists. <I>--Mark Englehart</I>

5 out of 5 stars Changing Movies Forever.......2007-04-28

I absolutely loved this movie! There is just no getting around it, the plot is well developed and the twists and turns that happen in the movie are very well done. I think that the casting was done really well; Sarah Michelle Gellar can play the bitchy attitude very well and Reese Witherspoon has always had that innocent girl next door look about her. it is most certainly a movie that I think would have the most appeal to teenagers and people in their 20s.

5 out of 5 stars In 1999 a miracle happened, Cruel Intentions Happened.......2007-04-02

In 1999 one of the best movies ever made was released Cruel Intentions a movie about seduction and destruction. Srah Michelle Gellar plays the leading character deceptive Kathryn Merteuil who makes a bet with her cunning stepbrother Sebastion Valmont played by the incrediable talented Ryan Phillippe who plots to sleep with the headmaster's clever virginal daughter Anette Hargrove (Reese Whiterspoon)before the school year begins. The terms are if Sebastion doesn't succeed in sleeping with Anette than than hot little car of his is hers but if he wins she'll give him something he's been obssessing about ever since the day their parents got married: he would get to sleep with her. Other characters add to the plot like Cecile Caldwell (Selma Blair) a naive teen who Court Renyolds dumped Kathryn for. Blaine Tuttle (Joshua Jackson) an openly gay friend of Sebastion. Cecile's black chello teacher and crush Ronald Clifford (Sean Patrick Thomas). Gregory McConnell (Eric Mabius) the first on a list of suspects on who wrote Anette warning her about Sebastion's cruel intentions. Adding to the mix is Sebastion's overcharging pyhciatrist Dr. Greenbaum (Swoosie Kurtz) her easily seduced daughter Marci (Tara Reid)Cecile's prim and proper mother Bunny (Bunny Caldwell) and Sebastion's kind and generous aunt Helen Rosemond (Louise Fletcher). Now that you've been introduced to the characters lets talk about the plot.

Step-siblings Kathryn Merteuil and Sebastion Valmont had always like the game of seduction and they played it good. After being dumprf on 4th of July weekend, Kathryn learns he fell for naive Cecile Caldwell and offers Sebastion a challeng to seduce Cecile. But Sebastion suggests a greater challlenge to deflower the new headmasters virginal daughter Anette Hargrove before the school year begins. The terms are if he fails Kathryn gets his car and if he wins he gets to sleep with Kathryn. The game is taken to far and until the end of the summer no one will be able to escape their dangerous game of Cat and Mouse. And the biggest shock is the rule is broken when Sebastion begins to fall in love with Anette. Who will win?

I thought this was a fantastic movie. It had suspense emotion, drama, romance and even a little comedy throwed in. When people say this is just another teen movie they are so wrong. This movie had depth and wasn't just an idiotic film. Sarah Michelle Gellar shinned in this movie never like before. Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon were so convincing and the movie itself was brilliant. Cruel Intentiuons has become one of my favorite novies over the years so not much compares to it. I have not seen Dangerous Liasions but Cruel Intentions will probably turn out better in my view. Don't judge this movie too quickly. Don't look at it has a teen movie. If you ignore that you might find this movie quite good. I love this movie. It is thrilling, clever, sexy, dramatic, romantic, and a very good twisted love story. If I could give it more than 5 points I would!

5 out of 5 stars Not a Selma Blair Fan.......2007-04-02

What's up with Selma Blair's retarded rag doll performance-it's disctracting and really not as funny as the producers seem to think.

Otherwise I think this film is sleek and perfect. I own and watch it regularly.

4 out of 5 stars I really like this movie!.......2007-01-29

I truly think that this movie about love, lies, and deciet was very entertaining and held my interest throughout the entire movie. It is about two wicked stepsiblings who nake their way playing wicked and cruel games on people and victimize people. Thier latest mission involves a new college student who has no idea that the stepbrother is tricking her to win a bet. She also soesn't know that the stepsister who is always kind and wears a smile on her face is an extremely evil and hurtful person who cares only about being number 1 in her wicked life. I highly reccomend it to anyone who loves a good romantic thriller that even surpasses "Basic Instinct" A-

3 out of 5 stars bad influence on kids.......2006-12-17

Sarah Michelle Gellar was gorgeous in her brunetteness. I didn't like the other actors in this movie and I didn't like this movie. It's a glossy movie that glamourizes meanness and Sarah Michelle Gellar's downfall in the end is so unlikely that I betcha some untalented and unlovable rich girls are out there right now sleeping around, taking drugs and sabotaging working girls like Tara Reid, Mischa Barton and Lindsey Lohan with initial false friendship. Sometimes we watch things we know ahead of time that we won't like because it's popular (e.g. Devil's Advocate) because we know it is going to have a social influence. Only by being exposed to the information, will the subsequent patterns of behavior be recognized.

5 out of 5 stars Abuse Is Not To Be Taken Lightly.......2006-12-18

That's the message here; and this is what can happen if action is not taken. Candace Cameron and Fred Savage leave their days as child stars behind in this 1996 NBC television movie, based on a true story. Stacy Collins (Cameron) is a junior in high school who is shy and uncertain, but when she begins dating handsome senior and star of the school wrestling team, Bobby Tennison (Savage), she feels loved and protected. But behind his charming exterior, Bobby's sweet behavior (leaving her flowers in her locker, giving her gifts, etc.), is a controlling, possessive nature which Stacy tries to dismiss. But he closely monitors her every move and feels threatened if she spends time away from him. Physical violence is commonly introduced. Their friends suspect that things are not as rosy as they seem, but only Stacy's best pal Nicky (Heather McComb) tries to persuade her to end the relationship. Trapped in the feelings of isolation and blaming herself for his inexcusable actions, Stacy lives in fear. Bobby's cousin informs Nicky that he had also mistreated his previous girlfriend (who transferred to to get away from him), and after yet another public fight (during a great school dance, where the nifty 50s is the theme), Stacy, encouraged by Nicky, tells Bobby that it's over. A truly unnerving moment in the hallway after she breaks it off, when he tells her he will never give her up. Through the wired glass of the classroom door his face is like cold, evil granite, his gaze like the black coals of hell. Bobby, under the guise of wanting to stay friends, asks her to come over to his house to give him a haircut. Inevitably, another spat occurs, and, instead of taking her home, he takes her out to a nearby lake where they had their first date. Only Bobby returns to the truck, to the horror of his friend Vince (Eric Balfour), and with blood on his hands. "If I can't have her, no one's gonna," Bobby chillingly states. Stacy is missing; her frantic mother Laura (Michelle Phillips), and friends search for clues, along with the local police; Stacy's ex-boyfriend is strangely calm. Vince, riddled with guilt, makes an anonymous call to the cops, telling them to go look out by the lake. He is eventually brought in for questioning, while Nicky informs Laura of Bobby's abusive tendencies. Vince tells what he knows, and then the investigation moves to Bobby, who finally cracks under the pressure. When Stacy refused to go back to him, he had slit her throat and dumped her body in the lake. Sally Jessy Raphael makes a special appearance as the judge who hands down the life sentence to a stone cold Bobby. She then admonishes all others involved for not speaking up - this is what can happen if you don't.

Those who remember Savage as the wholesome Kevin Arnold on "The Wonder Years" will be surprised at how effective he is - romantic and attractive one minute, angry and obsessive the next. The way Bobby treats his mother, his abusive father's past, and his anger in the wrestling ring are subtle hints of things to come (as is the moment when Stacy takes a shower at Nicky's house - it's pretty obvious that she is being watched). Cameron, who has always excelled at playing kind, naive, gentle characters, does a great job, as always. Heather McComb is the best friend every girl should have, while Michelle Phillips gives just the right amount of balance as the caring but distracted mother who is too busy with work and her own lowlife boyfriend (whom Stacy despises), to realize the dangerous situation her daughter is in.

Hopefully, stories like this will raise more awareness - too many people have looked the other way.

The DVD: This version is slightly different than the one that aired on television. Two Belinda Carlisle songs have been replaced with more current music. The only extras are trailers for direct to video films.

5 out of 5 stars A message that never gets old.......2006-06-22

Candace Cameron and Fred Savage shake off the goody-goody images associated with the roles that brought them teen stardom on Full House and The Wonder Years. Cameron plays Stacy Collins, a normal high school girl full of insecurities who happens to land the class hunk. Savage is Bobby Tennyson, high school wrestler and all-around popular guy. When these two get together, Stacy finally knows what it feels like to be a part of the in-crowd and is so grateful she's willing to look past Bobby's numerous faults.

Their relationship starts off normal enough with Bobby wooing Stacy with flowers and love poems, but he gets progressively more possessive and jealous. Stacy initially thinks it's cute that Bobby is so protective until it gets to the point where he becomes overbearing and irrational. Even when he starts hitting her, she defends him to her friends telling them that you stick by the people you love. "Everything's fine" becomes her mantra even though those closest to her can plainly see that it's not the case.

This relationship closely mirrors the one in which Stacy's mother is involved. Her mother is too absorbed in her own dating situation to understand and acknowledge what's going on with Stacy. Stacy assumes the maternal role, in fact, berating her mother for allowing her boyfriend to treat her badly though she's willing to overlook Bobby's abusive nature. In fact, when her mother confronts her about the abuse, Stacy says "That's your story, not mine." That Stacy's mother backs off at this point is a disgrace and this film strives to point out that in any situation no one should let abuse slide.

This film came out in the early 1990's and was one of those Sunday Night movies aimed at letting teenagers know the ills that will befall them if they're not careful. It's stuck with me all these years because the message is delivered without a scolding undertone, but instead as a reminder of what can go horribly wrong if you let things spiral out of hand. Sally Jessy Raphael has a guest role as the judge in Bobby's trial and she reminds those present who witnessed Stacy's abuse that we have a responsibility to the people who we care about. It's a foolish and dangerous practice to simply shake off abuse with the adage "Love Hurts." It shouldn't.

5 out of 5 stars a powerful made for TV drama.......2006-06-12

I've only seen this movie once on TV back when it first aired like 10 years ago. It was an intriguing drama that drew me in until the credits. It is very well done and the acting is top notch. It was refreshing to see Fred Savage and Candice Cameron in dramatic roles. After watching it I wanted to see it again. When I found out it was coming out on DVD I was really excited. If you haven't seen it I recommend you do if you like dramas. Don't let the made for TV fact scare you. It could have easily been in the theatre in the 80's even though it is not an 80's movies. I'm just saying it is top notch quality. If you can get your hands on a copy of this you won't be disappointed.

<b>Mission Impossible</b>
A flashy, splashy summer-movie blockbuster that's fun and exciting without being mindless? That's the impossible mission accomplished by director Brian De Palma, star-coproducer Tom Cruise, and the crack team of Mission: Impossible. Based on the '60s TV show and an almost impenetrably complex (but nonetheless thrilling) original story by David Koepp (Jurassic Park) and Steven Zaillian (Schindler's List), with a screenplay by Koepp and Robert Towne (Chinatown, Shampoo), Mission: Impossible begins with veteran agent Jim Phelps (Jon Voight) and his expert crew embarking on a mission that goes horribly, horribly wrong. But nothing is what it seems. The nail-biting set piece--always a signature of director De Palma (Carrie, The Untouchables)--in which Cruise is lowered from the ceiling to retrieve information from a computer in a high-security vault--is an instant classic. But perhaps even more impressive, at least in retrospect, is a flashback sequence in which two characters attempt to reconstruct a series of events from multiple points of view. It's pretty daring and sophisticated stuff for a big-budget spy movie, but brains were always what put the Mission: Impossible team ahead of the competition, anyway, no? --Jim Emerson

<b>Mission Impossible II</b>
Visually stunning, and a likely must for John Woo aficionados, the second Mission: Impossible outing from megastar Tom Cruise suffers from an inconsistent tone and tired plot devices--not only recycled from other films, but repeated throughout the film. Despite remarkable cinematography and awe-inspiring, trademark Woo photography, the movie offers a tepid story from legendary screenwriter-director Robert Towne (Chinatown, Without Limits) and a host of other writers, most uncredited.

It is, regrettably, as forgettable as the first big-budget, big box-office MI in 1996, and it's clear (as Towne confirms) that the plot was developed around Woo- and Cruise-written action sequences. The film combines equal elements of romance and action, and is best when it features the stunning allure of Thandie Newton as Nyah, a master thief recruited by the sinewy charms of Ethan Hunt (a fit Cruise). Deeply in love after a passionate night, the couple must then combat MI nemesis (and Nyah's former lover) Sean Ambrose (Ever After's Dougray Scott). Ambrose holds hostage a virus and its cure, and offers them to the highest bidder.

Woo's famed mythic filmmaking is far from subtle, with heroic Hunt frequently slow-motion walking through fire, smoke, or other similar devices, replete with a white dove among pigeons to signal his presence. The emphasis on romance is an attempt to develop character and a more human side to superspy Hunt, but still the dreary story proves a distraction from the exciting action sequences. John Polson (as an MI team member) is an Aussie talent to keep an eye on. --N.F. Mendoza

<b>Mission Impossible III</b>
(Though no Mission: Impossible stunt will ever be quite as simultaneously nail-biting and funny as the first film's wire-dangling break-in of CIA headquarters.)

--Ellen A. Kim

5 out of 5 stars Mission Impossible Gift for Dad.......2007-01-11

My dad loved the collection, which was a Christmas gift. He got it in a timely fashion and has watched all three movies.

4 out of 5 stars Excited to have all three movies together........2007-01-10

I enjoyed seeing all these movies in the theater and i will continue to enjoy them at home. The extras were interesting to see the behind the scenes of how the movies were made.

5 out of 5 stars Best 'Mission' yet.......2007-01-10

This Mission is the best yet. If it were in a different genre and had less tabloid rubbish surrounding it, it would be nominated for an Oscar. JJ Abrams is a great director. Love the first scene & someone should cast the 'I'd marry him' girl in a leading role immediately!

Not half-bad, this lightly engaging, potboiler romance concerns an ice skater (Lynn-Holly Johnson) who loses her vision in an accident but goes on to excel on the ice with the support of the guy (Robby Benson) who loves her. When she takes up with some rich schmuck, however, intertwining problems in her work and in love throw a shadow over everything. Nice performances, nice skating--the whole thing is a pleasant distraction. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

4 out of 5 stars woth seeing again.......2007-04-02

Nicely reproducted copy of the film. I wanted it basically for the music, but enjoyed seeing the film again, too. (And it is certainly suited for a "G" rating - which seems to be somewhat rare these days!)

3 out of 5 stars sappy but fun.......2007-02-18

A movie not very true to the real world of figure skating. ... but many a teenage girl will love it.
Starring lynn Holly Johnson and Bobby Benson ( the voice of Beast n the Disney movie Beauty and the Beast.) Story of a young girl with dreams of going to the Olympics only to have a terrible accident and going blind... but this she over comes with the love and help of her boyfriend and ends up triumphing through it all.

it is not perfect, but an okay movie. If you are looking for reality this is not it

5 out of 5 stars Ice Castles.......2007-02-17

I will always remember the first time I saw this movie, in the 1970's! My friend and I cried so much we had to go and get tissues out of the "Ladies" to mop up all the tears. Now it is 2007 and I wanted so much to see this movie again to see if my interpretation of it had changed now that I am nearly 50 and I have gone through so many of life's experiences...this movie stands up now just as strong and just as beautiful as it did 30 years ago!!! That "don't give up" moral is still just as true today, and somehow even MORE true today than it was when I was so much younger. I am so proud of Bobby Benson for his remarkable career since Ice Castles and wish to congratulate him. I will always love this movie and cherish the music and the love displayed by the characters. Even more grateful am I that, now that I could not buy the movie anywhere in Australia, I have been able to cry my heart out again thanks to Amazon.com

5 out of 5 stars Lovely story!.......2007-01-04

Certainly a triumph for Robby Benson and Lynn Holly Johnson! I didn't even know if this film had survived all the films being rescued from destruction by Hollywood these days in an attempt to restore so many great films.

There are times the tears start to drop from my eyes when watching this film. When you are my age having seen all the tradgedies I've seen in my life, you tend to really appreciae the young and their battles: Something you don't really see in others when you are young yourself, until you are at least half a century old.

I especially love the scene when Robby (Nick) appears and helps "Lexie", played by Lynn Holly Johnson, face her handicap; after her accident where the two come together like only two soulmates could; as one reaches out to strengthen the other. Its beautifully played by both actors. Both kids, I should say young adults, are pretty much hitting full adult "babehood" with the public in this movie and the chemistry of both the actors and story make for a great addition to my library.

I've also been a long time fan of Colleen Dewhurst who does an impecable job in this film as the coach. Colleen always carried a charisma in her face that could draw you into her just by looking at her. Another actor who has this ability is Seth Green when I've seen his performances. It's a gift when a person can do that on screen and it works for me!

The DVD case was in excellent condition and delivery was as promised. DVD quality was fine. No complaints.

When Goldie Hawn recommended Elizabeth Berkley for a small role in <I>First Wives Club</I>, she publicly stated that Berkley deserved the opportunity to redeem herself after starring in the ridiculous <I>Showgirls</I>. That says it all: this sleazy, stupid movie, which mixes soft pornography with the clichés of backstage dramas, is the kind of project an aspiring actress would have to put well behind her to keep a career going (though costar Gina Gershon certainly benefited from her, uh, exposure in the film). Berkley plays a drifter who hitches a ride to Las Vegas, becomes a lap dancer and then a performer, and discovers--<I>gasp!</I>--there's a whole world of sex and violence involved with these things. Gershon is probably the best element in the film, playing Berkley's bisexual rival for the big spotlight on stage. Joe Eszterhas was well overpaid for writing this howler, and director Paul Verhoeven (<I>Basic Instinct</I>) should have known better than to take it seriously. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

Description

5 out of 5 stars Guilty Pleasure.......2007-06-14

This film has the worst acting ever. That's probably what makes it so entertaining to watch. The costumes and the dancing are very entertaining and the plot is pretty ridiculous. The VIP set is great with the shot glasses. Definitely a movie you need to see at least once.

1 out of 5 stars Plan 10 From Las Vegas.......2007-04-26

Plan 9 From Outer Space was worse than this steaming pile, but they didn't have the lavish budget to waste that this one did.

Every show biz cliche imaginable is dragged out, but in such a clumsy, trying-but-failing-to-be-manipulative way, that your jaw drops to the floor, and you are entertained, almost against your will. Also, there are really spectacular dance scenes, and lots of female flesh for the eyes to feast on.

But the story and the dialogue and the direction are stupid. The red haired actor who plays the choreographer also played the Wig Master for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat on an episode of Seinfeld. Kramer somehow misses seeing the show and as consolation, is allowed to walk down Broadway wearing the Tecnicolor Dreamcoat. He is then mistaken for a pimp and arrested. Perhaps that whole sequence was intended as an homage to Showgirls, and one can only wish that Joe Esterhauz could have been arrested for pimpin' this ridiculous movie.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Most Erotic Movies Ever Made. (IMHO).......2007-03-04

Showgirls is one those movies that has been paraded with awful reviews "Woofs" and just plain hate. I really don't understand why this is. Showgirls is about a beautiful young woman named Nomi(Elizabeth Berkley), Who decides to try her luck and hitchhike to Las Vegas to become a dancer. She gets a ride to vegas and befriends a young woman named Molly, Molly then helps her get a job a smalltime strip-club she works at doing make-up and such. Nomi then realizes that she wants more than this. She then auditions for a popular show called "Goddess", Nomi then becomes a surprising success. And many other entertainings happen during the film. The movie is filled with non-stop nudity witch helps the film to become very erotic. You will get an eyefull of the naked body of Elizabeth Berkley, Who you probably used to watch on "Saved By The Bell". The storyline is surprisingly good,The acting is also excellent.

If you have a problem with nudity and the subject of "Rape" I wouldn't recommend this. But if you appreciate the female form and don't mind a little violence I would MOST defenitly recommend this.

All in all this movie deserves a 10/10.

4 out of 5 stars Good sleazy fun!.......2007-03-03

Nomi (Elizabeth Berkley) is a beautiful traveling girl who is desperate for a job in Las Vegas. She gets a new home thanks to a new friend named Molly (Gina Riveria) for she gets a job as a dancer at the Cheetah club, one night a talent agent finds her for he decides to have her as a part of an erotic stage show at the Stardust called "Goddess" where she meets the big star known as Cristal (Gina Gerhshon). James (Glen Plummer) is a free-style man helps Nomi as he teaches her the right dance moves to become a top dancer when the rivalery between her and Cristal has begun.

Very entertaining sleaze epic from Paul Verhoeven ("Total Recall", "Robocop", "Basic Instinct" and "Starship Troopers") has non-stop nudity, clever dialog, sex and over the top acting. There's plenty of good eye candy through the many gorgeous girls prancing nude especially Ms. Berkley who really shows off her stuff for the camera.

The DVD has good picture and sound with a couple of good extras like the trailer and a behind-the-scenes featurette, this is an enjoyable erotic flick if you can suspend your disbelief.

5 out of 5 stars Guilty Pleasure.......2007-01-31

I know this movie gets a lot of crap but you know what? I love it and all its smutty terribleness. I've seen it about a hundred times on tv with all the bad stuff cut out so I finally decided to go ahead and buy the damn thing so I could get the goods! and boy was it worth it. I laughed soooo hard. If people were that spastic at sex everyone would be walking around with bruised groins. Despite the bad acting and script, I can't help but love it.
