A moving and inspiring story of redemption and personal triumph in the face of great odds, <I>Jet Li's Fearless</I> is the based-on-facts story of Chinese folk hero Huo Yuanjia (Jet Li). The son of a martial-arts master whose greatest strength was his restraint, Huo grows into an unbeatable fighter whose pride and thoughtlessness lead to a chain of tragic losses. After a classic wanderer-in-the-wilderness penance, Huo reinvents himself as a mature instructor of Wushu, a martial arts system that embraces all forms of fighting without preference or pre-judgement. He also becomes a populist symbol, at the dawn of the 20th century, of China's refusal to entirely capitulate to the boot of Western colonialists. Taking on whatever European, American, or Japanese fighter the outsiders bring in to demoralize the natives, Huo becomes a legend that, in real life, is still revered. Thrillingly directed by Ronny Yu (<I>Warriors of Virtue</I>), <I>Jet Li's Fearless</I> is a dazzling action movie that transcends its breathless fight sequences with Huo's sportsmanship virtues, i.e., knowing when you've won by example, rather than by the fist. Jet Li is superb in the role. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>
Customer Reviews:
Good piece of fiction.......2007-06-10
While this movie is about Huo Yuanjia, it isn't a true story. Did he exist? Yes. Did he found the Chin Woo Association? Yes. Did he compete in a series of fights for the honor of China? Yes.
That is where the truth ends. He was not someone who looked for a fight every chance he got, nor was he a spoiled rich kid. The movie states that he had one daughter and she was killed in revenge by his rival's nephew.
It depicts him as never remarrying or having any children when he died. Not so, that is why Huo's grandchildren are so upset at this films production. A far as this film is concerned they don't exist.
The film is well done and script was well written, just wish they hadn't removed the seen where he saved the child from being punished for trying to steal the cow. Choreography was top notch.
I would have given it a higher rating if not for the lack of truth about Hou Yuanjia's character before the challenge matches and his family or in the case of the film, lack thereof.
This isn't Jet Li's final martial arts film, but it is his last martial epic. He just will no longer be doing this type of movie.
Jet Li martial arts vehicle.......2007-05-12
"Fearless" a film featuring the stunning martial arts skills of the incomperable Jet Li also has a compelling historical story line. Li plays Huo Yuanjia, the most famous Chinese martial arts master at the turn of the 20th century. In a 1910 tournament in Shanghai, Huo fought against the best fighters representing countries who were carving up Chinese territory during the age of colonialism, restoring national pride.
The film directed by Ronny Yu is a flashback chronicling the life of Huo who was the asthmatic son of a Tianjin martial arts master. Years of practice established him as the best fighter in his region. When a blood feud with a rival master turned deadly killing his family in an act of revenge, Li flees wandering aimlessly through the rural countryside.
He is restored by the affections of blind country girl Moon played by Betty Sun and her grandmother. Purified in his beliefs he returns to Tianjin and teams with lifelong friend Nong Jinsun played by Yong Dong to form the prestigious Jin Wu Sports Federation.
Jet Li's skills are rivaled only by the legendary Bruce Lee. If "Fearless" is truly Li's last martial arts film then that is a sad loss for all viewers.
CLUELESS.......2007-05-12
ZZZZZZZZZZZZ What can I say? Been there done that... This movie reminds me of "Once Upon A Time In China 1,2,and 3". I just wasn't feeling this movie at all. When it was over, my son and I looked at eachother, and shook our heads in disjust; that's the God's honest truth.
I bought this movie based on everyone else's high praise for it, and I feel jipped. I will say this...the fighting scenes were okay, but all the melodramatic talking and the blind woman who helped show him the "light" just negated all the good fighting. Don't waste your time or money on this movie.
top notch.......2007-05-06
This is not only one of Jet Lis best movies of late, but one of his best movies ever. The production values are of very high quality, the choreography amazing and the story is simple without being boring. Jet Li does a good job portraying Huo Yuanjia and the rest of the cast is, in my opinion, also up to par.
It definitely brings moral, ethic, valour, honour, and other values in the foreground, but without being preachy. The story, although based on a true story, is quite historically inaccurate, but then again, who takes their history lessons from the cinema?
Highly recommendable
A very great actor is revealed.......2007-05-01
Jet Li has restrung his bow: He has added to his superb execution of martial arts his equally superb acting. This, in the great Chinese tradition that martial arts are an integral part of acting. With this performance he has taken his place as one of our time's greats.

Chicago director Rob Marshall's pretty but empty (or pretty empty) film has all the elements of an Oscar® contender: solid adaptation (from Arthur Golden's bestseller), beautiful locale, good acting, lush cinematography. But there's something missing at the heart, which leaves the viewer sucked in, then left completely detached from what's going on.
It's hard to find fault with the fascinating story, which traces a young girl's determination to free herself from the imprisonment of scullery maid to geisha, then from the imprisonment of geisha to a woman allowed to love. Chiyo (Suzuka Ohgo), a young girl with curious blue eyes, is sold to a geisha house and doomed to pay off her debt as a cleaning girl until a stranger named The Chairman (Ken Watanabe) shows her kindness. She is inspired to work hard and become a geisha in order to be near the Chairman, with whom she has fallen in love. An experienced geisha (Michelle Yeoh) chooses to adopt her as an apprentice and to use as a pawn against her rival, the wicked, legendary Hatsumomo (Gong Li). Chiyo (played as an older woman by Ziyi Zhang), now renamed Sayuri, becomes the talk of the town, but as her path crosses again and again with the Chairman's, she finds the closer she gets to him the further away he seems. Her newfound "freedom" turns out to be trapping, as men are allowed to bid on everything from her time to her virginity.
Some controversy swirled around casting Chinese actresses in the three main Japanese roles, but Zhang, Yeoh and Gong in particular ably prove they're the best for the part. It's admirable that all the actors attempted to speak Japanese-accented English, but some of the dialogue will still prove difficult to understand; perhaps it contributes to some of the emotion feeling stilted. Geisha has all the ingredients of a sweeping, heartbreaking epic and follows the recipe to a T, but in the end it's all dressed up with no place to go.--Ellen A. Kim
Description
A Cinderella story set in a mysterious and exotic world, this stunning romantic epic shows how a house servant blossoms, against all odds, to become the most captivating geisha of her day.
"... a visually stunning adaptation of Arthur Golden's best-selling novel." (Barry Caine, OAKLAND TRIBUNE) The director of Chicago, Rob Marshall, transports us into a mysterious and exotic world that casts a potent spell. A Cinderella story like no other, MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA stars Ziyi Zhang, Ken Watanabe, Michelle Yeoh and Gong Li. "Gorgeously photographed, meticulously directed and hypnotically acted. MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA is luxurious, ethereal and intoxicating. It will leave you breathless." (Rex Reed, NEW YORK OBSERVER)
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful Images.......2007-06-21
I watched the movie and also the bonus footage. The amount of work that went into building sets for this film is just amazing. I thought the images were simply gorgeous and I really loved it. Unfortunately, it just didn't compare to the book which really takes things to another level. Still an excellent movie that I would recommend.
haunting and beautiful.......2007-06-08
This movie was not one I think I'll watch again and again...but definitely worth seeing, especially on DVD and in the widescreen format. Ziyi Zhang's acting was emotionally deep and thoroughly involving. A unique, if not heartrending and yet somehow triumphant story.
Great Movie.......2007-05-30
After seeing this movie the first time, I had to read the book. I had a hard time putting it down. I saw the movie again and enjoyed it even more. It was a little difficult understanding their English at times; especially Mother. Please see it as it is a great movie.
Another Hollywood Mishap.......2007-05-30
Don't get me wrong, this is a good story of a world which many do not know about or have misconceptions of. However, this is another example of how movies in English about another culture miss the mark.
I have lived in Japan for the past 3 and a half years and have a pretty good understanding about Japanese culture through everyday interactions and the fact that I can speak the language. On top of the different actresses having different accents in English, the Japanese didn't always sound right. And what is the point of having the movie in English yet throwing in Japanese words like "Arigatou" and "Onegaishimasu." Not once did I hear the word "Sumimasen," which you hear come out of a Japanese person's mouth almost 50 times day. There are just so many cultural things in the movie that just did not resemble Japanese culture at all. Aside from the kimonos, buildings and some Japanese writing, the movie just didn't seem Japanese at all.
With all that said, it is a good story.
If you really want to watch a movie about that kind of society, watch the movie titled "Sakuran." Of course the movie has sort of a modern feel to it but it still keeps to certain cultural norms that were most likely part of that era. Umm...you might want English subtitles if you don't understand Japanese.
Congratulations...great production!.......2007-05-27
Someone stereotyped this movie as a "tale as old as time" about a poor girl making it big time in the big city, losing it, and then regaining it." As an author, and as a writer, I must disagree. I don't want to insult anyone but there was so much more in this movie. The history and culture presented in this film is a sneak preview of what must have been a very compelling novel, which I will order from Amazon, now that I have seen the movie.
If you want to know whether to read it or buy the DVD, my four stars apply to the movie. This movie won the Oscar for cinematography, among other things and the panoramic views of the scenery in Japan is fully realized on the widescreen. So, if you don't have a widescreen TV folks, please don't settle for anything but a full screen version. You will get cheated if you try a widescreen version on a regular TV. This movie is very, very visual. I watched it repeatedly just for the beauty of it.
Now as for the plot, I will let the review of others guide you. The same reviewer who I have complained stereo typed the story truly did give a good report for this movie. He did not give a synopsis and I feel like others have submitted a worthwhile syopsis, so I won't go there.
This romantic drama tells the story of what could have happened to any Japanese girl living before the American assimilation of the Japanese culture into the western world. The history is accurate and exotic in its content.
I'm a nitpicker. I find errors in everything except my own work. (This is due to the fact that I can't stand to read my own work and do not have the expertise of an editor) However, I can warn you that there are several places that needed clarification to keep the viewers from getting confused about the customs of the geisha. Some loose ends were spotted here and there. I hope to find those answers in the book. I won't point them out because if no one else notices it they will enjoy the movie much better, but for nitpickers like me...be forewarned! If the loose ends had been edited properly, the movie would have won more academy awards and I would have given it five stars.
This movie is impressive and worth watching. I disagree with some comments from one review about the acting. I think everyone gave a wonderful performance and I doubt if you will find a better "Chairman" than Ken Wantanabe.

Amazon.com essential video
Hong Kong <I>wuxia</I> films, or martial arts fantasies, traditionally squeeze poor acting, slapstick humor, and silly story lines between elaborate fight scenes in which characters can literally fly. <I>Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon</I> has no shortage of breathtaking battles, but it also has the dramatic soul of a Greek tragedy and the sweep of an epic romance. This is the work of director Ang Lee, who fell in love with movies while watching <I>wuxia</I> films as a youngster and made <I>Crouching Tiger</I> as a tribute to the form. To elevate the genre above its B-movie roots and broaden its appeal, Lee did two important things. First, he assembled an all-star lineup of talent, joining the famous Asian actors Chow Yun-fat and Michelle Yeoh with the striking, charismatic newcomer Zhang Ziyi. Behind the scenes, Lee called upon cinematographer Peter Pau (<I>The Killer</I>, <I>The Bride with White Hair</I>) and legendary fight choreographer Yuen Wo-ping, best known outside Asia for his work on <I>The Matrix</I>. Second, in adapting the story from a Chinese pulp-fiction novel written by Wang Du Lu, Lee focused not on the pursuit of a legendary sword known as "The Green Destiny," but instead on the struggles of his female leads against social obligation. In his hands, the requisite fight scenes become another means of expressing the individual spirits of his characters and their conflicts with society and each other.
The filming required an immense effort from all involved. Chow and Yeoh had to learn to speak Mandarin, which Lee insisted on using instead of Cantonese to achieve a more classic, lyrical feel. The astonishing battles between Jen (Zhang) and Yu Shu Lien (Yeoh) on the rooftops and Jen and Li Mu Bai (Chow) atop the branches of bamboo trees required weeks of excruciating wire and harness work (which in turn required meticulous "digital wire removal"). But the result is a seamless blend of action, romance, and social commentary in a populist film that, like its young star Zhang, soars with balletic grace and dignity. <I>--Eugene Wei</I>
Description
An epic set against the breathtaking landscapes of ancient China, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, combines the exhilarating martial arts choreography by Yuen Wo-Pind (The Matrix) with the sensitivity and classical storytelling of an Ang Lee film. The result is something truly unexpected: romantic, emotionally powerful entertainment.
Customer Reviews:
Best Martial Arts Film Ever.......2007-06-22
Everything has already been said about this film, so I'll put only a short review here.
Why did I use the superlative in the title? Because it seems to be true for me. (The second place belongs to House of Flying Daggers [Region 99].) The story line is not very strong, but much better than you may see in this genre. The romantic threads do not make it too schmaltzy, and the visual design is simply excellent.
Disappointed..........2007-05-28
Although I enjoyed Michelle Yeoh and Zhang Ziyi (as always), I didn't enjoy this movie hardly at all. I couldn't believe this was the movie that got such rave reviews and was Oscar nominated etc. I don't say that foolishly, stating that I dislike the movie when really I dislike the genre. That's not it. I just much prefer films like "House of the Flying Daggers" and "Hero" to this one.
Not The Best Martial Arts Movie.......2007-04-05
the cinemotography is pretty good i this movie, but the plot was raw. This movie was okay.
East meets West, and West comes off best. .......2007-02-16
The martial arts film traditionally has attained its own unique niche in the domain of film. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is a Chinese-language film that works within the parameters of the old cliches of this niche, but changes just enough to make it stand out and create an appeal that reaches far beyond the limited circle of the average martial art film enthusiast. It doesn't lack the action that one might expect from the typical film in this genre, but it adds something new: the soul of tragedy and romance.
An adaption of a Chinese pulp-fiction novel, the story concerns two secret lovers (the male Li Mu Bai and female Yu Shu Lien) who are warriors on a quest to recapture a legendary sword, the Green Destiny, which has been stolen by a masked bandit. The thief turns out to be the beautiful princess Jen Yu, who is in the middle of trying to avoid an arranged marriage, because she is secretly in love with the desert bandit Lo, whom she grew to love after being abducted in the wilderness. Behind the intrigue and romance of these two forbidden loves, lies the dark cloud of mastermind Jade Fox, the evil woman responsible for the deaths of Mu Bai's former master and of Shu Lien's fiance. This sets the stage for a poignant drama, warm romance, and breath-taking action.
Despite being a martial arts film, the movie breaks the traditional Eastern mould by incorporating romantic elements one would expect from Hollywood. It has well been said that stylistically, it is "a blend of Eastern action and Western psychological drama." I think this assessment is correct, that while on the one hand the film is clearly inspired by martial-arts mysticism and action of the East, underneath the window dressing of the foreign aspects of the film lies the romanticism and drama that one is accustomed to from the West. By catering to what appeals to the modern Western mindset and incorporating subtle criticisms of traditional Chinese culture, it's not surprising that the film was somewhat of a flop in Asia, and that its concessions to contemporary themes of love and feelings made it a breakthrough success in the West. Stephen Greydanus puts it well by remarking: "Ang Lee has here crafted a masterful synthesis of various forms of Chinese mythology and Taoist philosophy that brings a broader perspective to its subject matter than many Asian films including some aspects of more typically Western sensibilities and ideals and, in the end, embraces a gently romantic humanism that is more life-affirming than the esoteric way of detachment and denial characteristic of Eastern thought." Certainly there are allusions to Taoistic mysticism, but the Taoism is in the end rejected in favor of realism and romanticism - which perhaps explains why the movie worked for Western viewers and not for Eastern ones.
The movie has also been the subject of scathing criticism for other reasons, not least from conservative Christian quarters, where offense was taken primarily to the implicit endorsement of extra-marital sexual relations, and the rebellious attitude of Jen toward her parents and her arranged marriage. For the most part, I share this concern, and it's good to be reminded of it. Watching too many movies which advocate the moral laxity of modern culture can dull sensitivity on this point, and unfortunately there aren't enough films on the other extreme to act as correctives.
But perhaps most discussion has been about the ambiguous conclusion (*spoiler warning*), where Jen leaps into the unknown. Lo has just expressed the wish is "to be in the desert, together [with you] again" and then Jen jumps off the cliff into the mist of uncertainty. If it's not suicide, what is it? And what happens next? We don't know. Some have optimistically seen this as a Christological leap of faith and sacrifice with the hope of resurrection, but it seems to me that interpreting this as a message of atonement and resurrection is being too generous and overly charitable. Perhaps the point is that we don't know the ending, and that the movie can only leave it up to us to decide for ourselves. And isn't this typical for a Western culture without absolutes? Maybe this is a reflection of our post-modern culture more than anything. Not only does contemporary culture delight in being morally ambiguous, but as a result it also has an ambiguous eschatology. The best that modern Western film can offer is a nebulous promise of a hope for the future. In other words, our world today doesn't really know much about the afterlife, so it can't really tell us much about it, except offer paradoxes and try to make us come up with our own happy endings. The best promise it can give is a blend of hopeless romanticism and eastern mysticism, where suicide is romanticized as an genuine escape and a leap into another world where perhaps dreams might just come true.
Despite being critical of some of these underlying themes and moral ambiguity, I have to admit that Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is stimulating in raising these questions, in a way that few popular films today do. It remains a fascinating film in what it says about a clash of cultures, and in what it says about our time. The discerning viewer is sure to find some measure of profit and entertainment from this highly regarded and award-winning film. - GODLY GADFLY
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.......2007-02-12
I watched the TV programs first. I understand it must have been difficult to make the long story to short. But the movie didn't reflect the original plot. Since I like Michelle Yoe and Zhan Ziyi, I bought the movie. But I didn't really enjoy it. I couldn't understand the ending, either. I wonder why it got the awrad. Anyway, I recommend "Hero" if you like to enjoy fantazy kun fu movies.

With stylish director Roger Spottiswode (Under Fire) at the helm, this James Bond thriller is one of the sleekest ever. It doesn't feel weighed down by its mammoth special effects, like most other recent installments. It's consistently graceful and light on its feet, especially when high-kicking Hong Kong martial-arts star Michelle Yeoh leaps into action as Bond's Chinese counterpart. And a sequence depicting a high-altitude parachute jump ranks with the coolest set pieces of the entire series. There's even an attempt in this outing to modernize the stiff-jointed Cold War assumptions of the secret-agent genre, by making the bad guy (played with greedy relish by Jonathan Pryce) an international media mogul, a megalomaniacal blend of Rupert Murdoch and Ted Turner. As a ploy to boost the ratings of his cable-news hookup, Pryce's Jeremy Carver employs a globe-spanning satellite system to nudge the armed forces of China and Great Britain into a confrontation--quoting William Randolph Hearst (and Charles Foster Kane) along the way: "You supply the pictures, I'll supply the war." Bond number six, Pierce Brosnan, seems to be settling into a no-nonsense interpretation of 007 as "a professional doing a job," a craftsman who seems to be exhilarated by his own competence. Michelle Yeoh's best Hong Kong efforts include Yes, Madam, Heroic Trio, and Supercop, in which she costarred with Jackie Chan--and matched him kick for kick. --David Chute

Bad Bad Bad WORST VILLAN WORST PLOT WORST ACTORS WORST SONG NOTHING WAS GOOD ABOUT IT!!!!
Agent 007 vs the Media..........2006-02-16
When MGM successfully resurrected the near dead James Bond franchise with "007: Goldeneye" starring the newest James Bond, Pierce Brosnan, many critics felt that maybe the franchise had experienced it's final adventure. The box office gold that resulted from the film told a different story, putting another adventure starring everyone's favorite MI-6 agent on the fast track to production. With a solid story, returning cast members and some new additions, not to mention Bond fans salivating over the casting of sexy Teri Hatcher (TV's "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman") as the latest Bond girl, expectations were justifiably high for this 18th James Bond film. While some of the efforts in this long-lasting franchise have been less than stellar, the most disappointing would be "007: Moonraker" starring Roger Moore (the worst James Bond in history), this newest Bond adventure was not one of the weak installments, and truth be told is one of the better adventures in the secret agent's illustrious career.
"007: Tomorrow Never Dies" focuses on a deranged media mogul (Jonathan Pryce) who sets out to setup international incidents that will force the world's superpowers to go to war with each other. MI-6 receives word of this plot and enlists the talents of their best agent to get a handle on the fragile situation by establishing a dialogue with the media mogul's estranged lover (Teri Hatcher), the problem is this sexy vixen just so happens to be a former flame of Agent 007. Can James Bond put aside his still smoldering passion for this woman? And can she forgive him for walking out on her or will she betray him in the end? As if this wasn't enough for 007 to handle, the Chinese have sent a secret agent of their own (Michelle Yeoh) to thwart the media terrorist from bringing his plans to fruition. Now, Bond must do something that he's never been comfortable in doing, that is to put his trust in another agent and work together to bring the media mogul to justice before all is lost.
If you recall in my review for "007: Goldeneye" I stated that I felt Pierce Brosnan's performance as 007 to be somewhat shaky (those may have not been the exact words I used, but you get the point). However, any uneasiness that Mr. Brosnan may have had in regards to the role, he has clearly overcome them in time for this installment into this franchise that is once again at the top of its game. The addition of Teri Hatcher and Michelle Yeoh as the two Bond girls, although Teri is the only one most guys remember, because lets face it if you had to choose between Teri or Michelle, who would you choose? Honestly. The story is, in my opinion, much stronger this time around with even more twists, turns, and action to keep your adrenaline pumping. The casting of Jonathan Pryce as the film's main villain at first glance might seem a bit of a weak choice; however, since the role didn't demand any real physical threat to be given, opting to instead deliver a more psychological scare, that coupled with Pryce's soft-spoken yet somewhat demented demeanor, made him an excellent choice for the role.
Based on how much I enjoyed this installment into the `James Bond' franchise, I'll be the first to say that my doubts regarding Pierce Brosnan as the newest Bond were unfounded. He clearly is capable to carry on the torch that was started all those years ago by Sean Connery. If you are a James Bond fan, which most people are to some extent, "007: Tomorrow Never Dies" is definitely one Bond movie I'm sure you've already seen, and if you haven't you really should get your act together.
"007: Tomorrow Never Dies" is rated PG-13 for violence, language, and sensuality.
Blowed Up!.......2005-10-01
If all else fails, explode something. What the heck, if nothing fail, explode something. This isn't a Bond movie; its a 2 hour trailer for a Bond movie. 98% incessant action & lame one-liners (Can you blame Brosnan for hating the dorky punchlines?). Pryce cackles like a madman and the threadbare plot disappears amid all the techno-geekism and the shoot-outs. Michelle Yeoh is great as the Bond Babe who kicks butt but she and Brosnan aren't given enough dialogue to cause any chemistry or make the audience care. Strictly a middle-of-the-pack Bond flick.
Bond takes on the media.......2005-09-10
Tomorrow Never Dies was the 18th official James Bond film, and the second one starring Pierce Brosnan. This time, Bond must race to stop a media mongul from igniting World War III between the Chinese and British for the sake of media ratings.
For me at least, TND has gotten better with repeat viewings. The main criticism of this film has always been that it turns Bond into a 'run-and-gun' generic action hero and that it favours pyrotechnics and stunts over a developed plot. It's a problem all the newer Bond movies have had, but TND is where it's most obvious. Once you accept that though, there's a lot of fun to be had here. Lots of great sequences, including a parking garage chase and one on a motorcycle. Michelle Yeoh, being an action star herself, is the best of the "secret agent" Bond girls. Yeoh and her stunt team manage a fight sequence ripped from Hong Kong action movies that almost feels out of place in a western Bond film. And David Arnold's first Bond score is a sexy, classy, memorable affair that's worth buying the soundtrack for.
The DVD packs a lot in. Two audio commentaries, an isolated score track, and a multi-angle storyboard featurette. It's missing a strong making-of documentary, but packs in a generalized featurette that aired on TV and is worth watching. Tomorrow Never Dies isn't the strongest Bond film, but it's pretty action-filled romp that's worth owning for Bond fans.

Kim

High-octane gas, pumped out by the buoyant maestro of Hong Kong action, Jackie Chan. In this outing, the irrepressible Chan plays a Hong Kong cop teamed up (gloriously) with a Chinese inspector played by Michelle Yeoh (a.k.a. Michelle Khan). The plot ranges all over Southeast Asia, culminating with Jackie hanging from a helicopter ladder high over the streets of Kuala Lumpur. This one's notable for the ingenuity of the stunts, and for allowing two of Asia's top female stars to do their bad thing. The great Maggie Cheung (<I>Chinese Box</I>) plays Chan's girlfriend, who has a tendency to pop up at the most inopportune moments; and Yeoh executes a hair-raising motorcycle jump onto a moving train--an absolute jaw-dropper. Originally released as <I>Police Story III</I>, the picture was rereleased in America as <I>Supercop</I> in 1996, after Chan's U.S. breakthrough with <I>Rumble in the Bronx</I>. The new version is slightly shorter than the original, and features a new soundtrack of English-language dialogue (awkwardly dubbed, but that's par for the course) and blaring rock music. Great fun any way you slice it, and--for the uninitiated--a terrific introduction to the humorous, high-kicking world of Jackie Chan. <I>--Robert Horton</I>

Customer Reviews:
a must-see Jackie Chan masterpiece.......2007-05-11
Basically the 3rd movie in the Police Story series (First Strike is the 4th and last), Supercop has very little connections to the 1st 2 Poilce Story movies, which were very closely related. Jackie Chan returns as Kevin Chan, and his girlfriend Mei is still played by Maggie Cheung. I have seen Supercop numerous time, and each time its like watching it for the 1st. The story is better than many Chan films, and the action and stunts are easily amongst the best.
The story, takes itself a little more seriously than some Chan films, say compared to Mr. Nice Guy or Rumble in The Bronx. The humor is more of a minum because of that, but there's still a funny couple good moments. I think the plot is interesting and suspensful, taking advantage of Kevin Chan playing an undercover agent throughout the movie. His sidekick, or should I say boss, throughout the film is played by Michelle Yeoh, also undercover along side him, and gives an equally great performance in the film. The dubbing is far better than most films, and if you prefer Jackie Chan's own English voice, he provied his own dub in Supercop.
The action is used sparingly throughout the beginning of the film, making everything run a little slow. But the movie begins to progress more and more nicely throughout. The finale is huge. 15 minutes of straight all out action from fights to some of, if not, the best stunts ever done. Chan jums on and hangs from a helicopter ladder over the city, and Michelle Yeoh hangs off the side of a van for dear life and steers a motorcyle right up ontop a moving train. Its all real and its must see.
Fan or no fan of Jackie Chan, this is just an all out great movie. No its not recognized as a masterpiece, but in a slightly smaller world this is A++ entertainment.
Not exactly the typical JC movie.......2007-01-03
This movie is a bit different than the 'typical' Jackie Chan movie. It has IMO a more solid and more sincere story than the other movies.
Especially the first part of the movie playing in mainland China is different. In this part, Michelle Yeoh as Chinese officer is a bit overdone, however the prison break is a really remarkable piece of JC cinema. The following part of the movie features a resort type adventure with typical 'early JC' slapstick components. The last part of the movie plays in Malaysia and contains non-stop action, which some never seen before stunts including a bike ride on a train plus a helicopter landing on the same train.
All in all a very entertaining JC movie, featuring different Asian locations and a high tension, super action sequence at the end. Watching the 'making of' is also recommended because it really shows the difficulties to perform the stunt sequences for this movie. The only drawback of this movie are some overdone and a bit ridicoulos slapstick scenes. I can recommend this movie for JC fans who want to watch a slightly different JC movie than usual.
Supercop.......2006-08-09
This arguably one of his best! Incredible! Haven't seen a Kung-fu movie this good since Legend of the Druken Master or even Twin Warriors!
This version is a decent buy.......2006-03-07
It's just like all the jet li movies, but the dubbing isn't near as bad, not good, but certainly exceptable. I would like to see the full version, only if there are more fights, there were really not very many in this. As a whole, I would call this Jackie's best modern day film. And oh yeah, michelle yeoh is the shiznit. NICE STUNTS JACKIE, YOU HAVE TOPPED YOURSELF AGAIN.
Super Movie! Chan & Yeoh! What's NOT to Like?.......2005-11-27
I have only seen the American version of this movie and found it very enjoyable. The situations are interestring and sometimes funny. The action is great. The motorcycly stunt with Yeoh near the end, I have read, was a first for her. They basically put her on the bike, aimed her and let it go.
It's great to see more and more people getting into these movies as the actors give thier all when doing them.

A Hong Kong combination of <I>Batman</I> and <I>The Three Musketeers</I>, <I>The Heroic Trio</I> is a winning mix of action, sci-fi, fantasy, and police caper starring three outstanding Hong Kong actresses. Former popular singer Anita Mui is Tung/Wonder Woman, a mysterious crime fighter who aids the police whenever needed. Michelle Yeoh is Ching/Invisible Woman, an unwilling disciple to an age-old Evil Master, and Maggie Cheung is Chat/Thief Catcher, a runaway enlisted by the Evil Master who is now a bounty hunter for hire. When baby boys are being stolen for a horrific plan, Tung assists in the investigation while Chat plans to make some bucks off of catching the culprit. The baby thief is none other than Ching, who is carrying out the kidnappings for the Evil Master with the aid of her lover's invention--an invisible robe. But the good in her wins out, and she joins forces with Tung and Chat. This is a superhero film, to be sure. Fantastic sets and impressive wire-strung fight choreography make <I>The Heroic Trio</I> extremely fun to watch. Wonder Woman enters the picture by running full-tilt atop power lines while Chat rides a motorcycle and wields a shotgun like the Terminator. The outlandish and complicated plot seems right at home here, heightened by the moody lighting and the combined screen presence of Mui, Yeoh, and Cheung. All three give fierce and touching performances in a hyperbolic and enjoyable film. <I>--Shannon Gee</I>
Description
Michelle Yeoh (CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, TOMORROW NEVER DIES), Anita Mui (Jet Li's THE ENFORCER, RUMBLE IN THE BRONX), and Maggie Cheung (SUPERCOP) form an unstoppable combination as three powerful martial arts experts -- each with her own secret superhero identity -- who band together to battle the ultimate evil! Their foe is a demented but powerful wizard who believes that if he kidnaps all the babies in China he can build a demonic ruling class and eventually dominate the world. With everything on the line, it's up to the Heroic Trio -- Shadow Fox, Mercy, and Invisible Woman -- to rise up and stop him! A big screen adventure that's like CHARLIE'S ANGELS meets THE TERMINATOR, you're sure to love all the hard-hitting fun in this action-packed martial arts fantasy!
Customer Reviews:
comic book strikes again.......2007-05-07
Some fairly good martial arts action does not excuse a nonsensical plot and frivolous acting.
MICHELLE YEOH IN A SPANDEX.......2006-03-08
That's all I needed to see to make this a classic movie. Some very good fight scenes, but you have to be pretty hard-core into these movies to really like this. Also some very weird fight scenes. The final fight I have never made it through to the end, not cause it was too sick, just because I did't like it. But I did like the whole movie up to that point. It is great to see Iron robe yim from OUATIC playing a REAL baddie.
The dubbing is a different story, this would have easily get a 4/5 if I could get my hands on the original language version. Seriously, this movie is like 86 minutes long, that is just a horribly done dvd, they remaster the picture to perfection, but can't give any type of other feature on this, how freaking hard is it to pu the original language on these.
Cheesy Fun!.......2005-09-20
Forget Batman, this is the way a super-hero movie should be done. Incredible imagery (some shots will take your breath away) prevails in a film genre that traditionally should not look as good as this does. There is also a plot (underground demon lord stealing babies to find an heir) and Anita Mui sings, too... what more could want? A warning the film is gritty violent, and contains a scene with an infant that may disturbing to sensitive viewers.
Taking the formula to the limit.......2004-12-13
Somebody is abducting infant boys in the metropolis and law enforcement is remiss to explain why. As we quickly discover it ends up being a Dark Master of the sewers. One of the kidnapped boys is to be selected as next emperor of this half-world and the rest will be terminated. In this very popular Hong Kong action movie about a trio of fighting females overcome their own ghosts and differences and join forces. As the jacket of the DVD explains, the police have use of the services of Shadow Fox (Anita Mui), Mercy (Maggie Cheung) and Michelle Yeoh (Invisible Woman) to stop the evil beast.
Shadow Fox (Anita Mui), and so happens to be married to police officer Damian Lau. In times of crisis, she changes to her alter ego Shadow Fox and patrols rooftops. Conversely, Mercy (Maggie Cheung) - short for Mercenary, is - as the name suggests - a killer for hire. Invisible Woman (Michelle Yeoh) starts out in the movie as the slave to the Emperor of the Underworld adding complexity to the composition of The Heroic Trio. This all-star trio of crime fighter, killer for hire, and lackey come together to form a tenuous yet effective bond.
From Ching Siu-Tung comes a great action movie. Hong Kong action films do not stray too often from the formula of the three-babes and it does not seem to be dying out anytime soon. Along the same lines such films So Close and Naked Weapon (both also available on Amazon.com) also take the formula and run with it. For anyone interested in this genre those are tow other movies to purchase. The Heroic Trio detours in the end to a strange Terminatoresque - which you will need to watch the movie to figure out, that's far from necessary - but makes it nonetheless entertaining. I can't get enough of wirework films so for all those HK film enthusiasts - this is keeper.

Good, Cheesy Fun.......2004-10-20
First of all, this review is based on the original (subtitled) version, not this Disney-edited DVD.
Don't watch this movie expecting something of the caliber of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon; you'll be disappointed. An obvious take-off of stories like The Three Musketeers and with a mood similar to the Batman movies, this film is often confusing and melodramatic, at times simply absurd.
That said, the acting is decent and the fight scenes engaging, making for an enjoyable film. It's entertaining, if not earth-moving.

Asia's top action actress Michelle Yeoh plays martial-arts legend Yip Wing Chun (the lone female Shaolin Temple student, who created her own style of kung fu) in this farcical action comedy. In their village, Wing Chun and her Auntie Abacus (King Dan Yuen) make a formidable team. Abacus is a shrewd and sharp-tongued businesswoman while Wing Chun (who developed her martial-arts skills to be less attractive to men) is known as a topnotch fighter. When a beautiful widow named Charmy (Catherine Yan) rolls into town and is taken in by the duo, their tofu business booms with customers fighting to catch a glimpse of her. But Charmy also grabs the attention of loutish bandits, who decide they'll steal her for a wife. More of a gender comedy than an accurate historical film (Yeoh doesn't actually perform the fighting style made famous by her character), <I>Wing Chun</I> is a combination of sitcom-style mistaken identity antics and kung fu action sequences. It lightly turns the gender politics of the traditional patriarchal China on their ear, as the female leads are always a step ahead of the men. Yeoh gives somewhat of a straight and stoic performance in this comedy film, which might have been due to a back injury sustained on the set. But it doesn't hamper her from performing impressive stunts, including bouncing up and down on an inch-wide pole like a diving board. And her costars provide plenty of humor to even out the film. <I>--Shannon Gee</I>
Customer Reviews:
Michelle, ma belle.......2007-05-07
Michelle Yeoh is at her youthful best in this action filled movie. It could be favorably compared to "Magnificant Fighters." Worthwhile having in one's martial arts library.
A great DVD for Michelle Yeoh fans.......2007-01-07
Michelle Yeoh is Yim Wing Chun (Wing Chun), and she has unmatched fighting skills in her village. A well-to-do relative runs a Soya Bean shop, and during a local festival, a woman named Charmy has brought her sick husband to the village for medical aid. Bandits then appear and Wing Chun drives them off after the local male fighters fail miserably, and she also rescues Charmy. Charmy's husband dies and so she tries to sell herself to pay for the cost of the funeral. Wing Chun (with the help of her relative) gives Charmy enough money to bury her husband and in exchange Charmy agrees to become an employee of the Soya Bean shop. Charmy dresses in clothes formally worn by Wing Chun, as Wing Chun used to work for the Soya Bean shop. Sometime later, another skilled warrior, Leung Pok To (Donnie Yen), has come to seek Wing Chun, since they were going to get married. He finds the Soya Bean shop and mistakes Charmy for Wing Chun, because it has been a long time since he has actually seen Wing Chun. In the evening, one of the bandit leaders, Flying Monkey, returns to the village to attack Wing Chun (Charmy), and Leung Pok To saves her, and Charmy is greatful. However, the next day, when Charmy is alone with Leung Pok To attempting to express gratitude, he is feels something is not quite correct. Sometime later, the real Wing Chun goes to meet Flying Monkey outside the village and defeats him easily using a non-traditional method. Flying Monkey's master, Flying Chimpanzee, learns of the defeat, then seeks Wing Chun and challenges her. After a consultation with Wing Chun's master, Wing Chun and Leung Pok To fully reconcile their differences and travel to the bandits' hideout together with the intent to get married after the conflict. After a long battle, Flying Chimpanzee is subdued, and Leung Pok To and Wing Chun get married.
Note-there are several misspellings with the subtitles, and for short periods, the image quality colors fade. Despite these cosmetic flaws, this is a well made "wire fu" movie directed by Yuen Woo Ping in 1994. There is a fighting style called "Wing Chun", but this film has NOTHING to do with that.
Half-a-loaf of Wingchun!.......2006-01-09
As a pure Kung Fu movie, if you enjoy the more comedic, wire-fu style, Yuen Woo-Ping (choreographer of the Matrix) delivers. Both Donnie Yen (a trained film fighter who plays Leung Bok-Cho) and Michelle Yeoh (not a trained fighter but a dancer who's consistently given great action on screen, who plays Yim Wing-Chun) personify their legendary characters with charm, grace, and ferocious martial intent.
If you're looking for a Wing Chun movie that showcases the actual Wing Chun style, however, you're better served by Sammo Hung's Prodigal Sons and Warriors Two. This movie uses the characters and style mostly in name only, with a story drawn, but far removed from, any of the traditional versions, and a style far more high flying and stunt based.
Still, I can think of no fan or exponent who wouldn't thrill just a little to see the beautiful landscapes and settings, and see the characters brought to life, and imagine what it might have been like in the days of legend.
Michelle Yeoh is kick ass.......2005-09-23
The movie is great. The best Chinese film I've seen. It's a lot of fun to watch. The choregrophy is mesmirising. And I love it when Michelle Yeoh teaches her enemies to call her mama. It is a great action-comedy film with a touch of romance.
Michelle Yeoh is Unbelievable!.......2004-07-30
Yuen Woo Ping does it again! This movie teams up two of the best there is, Michelle Yeoh and Donnie Yen. Throw in masterful fight choreography and good kung fu humor and you have another great addition to your movie collection. Wing Chun(Yeoh) is both powerful and graceful, not to mention gorgeous! She is a master of kung fu and respected by all, except the bad guys. They never learn. I am always astounded by Yeoh's skill and this movie showcases it beautifully!
Donnie Yen lives up to his reputation as usual. Incredibly fast and always showing his style and flare that nobody seems to match, he is just awesome to watch! He plays Wing Chun's love interest, that is as soon as he figures out which one she is! It is pretty comical how this all comes about. I must say that this movie is one of the funnier kung fu films that I have seen. Being both funny, loaded with great fights, and having a fairly well told story(although nothing too original) you should enjoy this one!
The only flaws in this movie are the lower quality film that was used(not the worst ever though) and the subtitles fly by in most parts of the film. Be ready to speed read! These are the reasons I did not give it five stars. This should not discourage you from seeing this though. With great action from start to finish this is one film not to be missed. Be sure to check it out!

KILLER FILM!.......2007-02-06
If you enjoy beautiful asian women, action, and as good as Hollywood filmmaking... this film is for you! A breath of fresh air. A ton of fun without going cheese. The acting was surprisingly right on the money. Get this movie if you like Seagal, Van Damme, Bruce Lee, etc., but without much of the sympathy, vengeance filled plots that are the same ol' same ol'. Chinawood is here to stay.
Half Amazing.......2006-11-08
Like most other reviewers have stated Silver Hawk is a entertaining movie with great stunts and fight sequences but with a weak story. The movie is about woman (Michelle Yeoh) who leads a double life, by day she is a popular model and by night she is Silver Hawk, a vigilante feared by most criminals. The story gets in gear when Yeoh must save a man who was kidnapped by some crazy villain. The man invented an Artificial Intelligence program that he intends to use for good but his nappers want it to take over the world. Now already the movie sounds like a comic book cliché and trust me it is in every way but somehow Michelle was talented enough to keep interest in the movie until the very end. I knew Michelle had skills but man she really killed this movie, the fight choreography was amazing and the stunts were also nice. One notable scene is when Silver Hawk is in the middle of a warehouse full of guys hanging from the sealing on bungee cords trying to hit her from every direction. Sounds like Tomb Raider but I like this bungee scene a lot more. Basically the best way to put it is Silver Hawk is worth seeing but only for its great fight and action scenes because at the end it's the only thing you'll remember.
Silver Hawk is a decent film but Michelle Yeoh is reason enough to see this........2006-10-19
I've been always fascinating with Asian action movies. So when I spotted this, I had to check it out. This was a good action movie, with several nifty fights and some funny parts. In this movie, Michelle Yeoh plays Lulu Wong, a much-idolised rock star and philanthropist by day, and a super heroine, Silver Hawk, who fights injustice with her skin-tight black leather outfit as her alter-ego. Richie Ren plays police detective Richman, who has an uncanny instinct and incredible wit, but he hates Silver Hawk for being always two steps ahead of the police. Both of them, however join hands to fight a baddie, Wolfe (Luke Goss) who wants to dominate the world through a special microchip in mobile phones, which will broadcast subliminal message to users.
Directed by cinematographer-turned-director Jingle Ma (Hot War, Tokyo Raiders, Summer Holiday, Goodbye,Mr.Cool and Para Para Sakura), the action scenes are beautifully choreographed, especially the one where a group of bungee jumpers armed with hockey sticks attacking our heroine in an outdoor arena. The opening sequence is also great with Yeo
