Charge your micro-mini cell phones and whip up some orange mocha Frappuccino, 'cuz Zoolander is on the runway, and you're gonna laugh your booty off! Based on a sketch created by writer-director Ben Stiller and cowriter Drake Sather for the 1996 VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards, Zoolander is a delirious send-up of New York's fashion scene as epitomized by male model Derek Zoolander (Stiller), a dimwitted preener who's oblivious to a Manchurian Candidate-like plot to turn him into a brainwashed assassin. Tipped off by a reporter (Christina Taylor), Zoolander teams with rival model Hansel (Owen Wilson) to foil the poodle-haired fashion designer (Will Ferrell) who's behind the nefarious scheme. The goofy plot's only half the fun; with roles for Stiller's parents (Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara), dozens of celebrity cameos, endlessly quotable dialogue, and improvisational energy to spare, Zoolander is very smart about being very stupid, easily matching the Austin Powers franchise for inspired comedic lunacy. --Jeff Shannon

Ben Stiller is hysterical in this unique comedy set in the world of jet-setting male models. Stiller has once again knocked it out of the park with his hysterical portrayal of Derrick Zoolander. Blue Steel and Magnum forever!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Zoolander DVD.......2007-04-11

Not everyone I watched it with or spoke to about it liked this movie but I'm a big Ben Stiller fan and I thought this spoof on male models was hilarious! I guess it just depends on your sense of humor!

    5 out of 5 stars Fun Movie.......2007-03-08

I have enjoyed watching this movie several times. It is a bit off-beat but hilarious. Ben Stiller & Owen Wilson are 2 of my favorite actors. The humor is "ridiculously" funny. It does have about 2 scenes that are a bit "risque" so you might want to be aware of that with kids but overall a comedy worth seeing.

2002's popular video-game-derived hit Resident Evil didn't inspire confidence in a sequel, but Resident Evil: Apocalypse defies odds and surpasses expectations. It's a bigger, better, action-packed zombie thriller, and this time Milla Jovovich (as the first film's no-nonsense heroine) is joined by more characters from the popular Capcom video games, including Jill Valentine (played by British hottie Sienna Guillory) and Carlos Olivera (Oded Fehr, from 1999's The Mummy). They're armed and ready for a high-caliber encounter with devil dogs, mutant "Lickers," lurching zombies, and the leather-clad monster known only as Nemesis, unleashed by the nefarious Umbrella Corporation responsible for creating the cannibalistic undead horde. Having gained valuable experience as a respected second-unit director on high-profile films like Gladiator and The Bourne Identity, director Alexander Witt elevates this junky material to the level of slick, schlocky entertainment. --Jeff Shannon

This movie is an awesome example of blu-ray technology. It looked and sounded amazing. And the movie itself is great on it's own. The only drawback is that, like most blu-rays, the special features are lacking.

Action from start to finish and shot mostly in the dark. DVD looked great with upconverting player, but compared to HD, this looks even better. Richer colors and so much more detail compared to the dvd release.

Sony pulled out all the stops to show off the power of Blu-Ray in this movie taking an already great movie with tons of great effects and bringing them to perfect stunning HD quality in both visual and audio.

Luc Besson's high-octane film incorporates presidents, rock stars, and cab drivers into its peculiar plot, traversing worlds and encountering some pretty wild aliens. Bruce Willis stars as a down-and-out cabbie who must win the love of Leeloo (Milla Jovovich) to save Earth from destruction by Jean-Baptiste Emmanuel Zorg (Gary Oldman) and a dark, unearthly force that makes Darth Vader look like an Ewok. --Geoff Riley

    3 out of 5 stars A change of heart.......2007-06-13

I first saw this film at the theater when it was first released. At the time, the slogan that went with it was "...go beyond Star Wars, go beyond Star Trek..."

Wow. That's a pretty bold statement. I had been a life long fan of both Star Trek and Star Wars as well us Luc Besson's previous work (Le Femme Nikita, and the masterful The Professional). I was really looking forward to this movie.

    And then I was disappointed.

The film is visually stunning (obviously borrowing heavily from Blade Runner), but the movie was MUCH different than either Star Trek or Star Wars.

First of all, the film was VERY campy. It made no attempts to deliver a serious or believable story. Most of the characters delivered their lines as if they were all taking part in one huge inside joke.

Some of the cinematography was done is such a way that I felt as though I were watching an '80s rock video.

The special effects, however, are probably the biggest redeeming qualities of this film. They are absolutely impeccable. The costumes and set designs were very good as well.

But this movie could never even hope to hold a candle to the Star Wars or Star Trek franchise. It was more of a comedy than anything else.

To be quite honest, after I saw the movie.....I hated it.

Then came the VHS release. With some trepidation, I decided to rent it and give it another chance. This time, I knew what to expect. I knew that I wasn't going "beyond Star Trek" or "beyond Star Wars". I was able to watch the film a second time with no preconceived notions of what it was going to be like.....

    .....and I actually ENJOYED it!

If taken for what it is (a sci-fi action-comedy), The Fifth Element is actually quite a well-crafted and executed little film. Just don't expect the film to deliver something better than what Star Wars or Star Trek has to offer.

I learned an important lesson from the marketing of this movie. It's best to go into a film without any ideas of what it will be like or what it SHOULD be like, despite what the advertisements may suggest.

All in all, I did buy a copy of the DVD for my collection and I do watch this movie from time to time. It's fun escapism, but Star Wars it's not.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Sci Fi Movies Ever.......2007-06-12

I would rank this movie up there with the top 10 greatest Sci Fi movies. Special effects...stupendous. Storyline...excellent. Casting, Acting, Costumes...all top notch. If you don't own this movie, you should purchase it NOW!!

5 out of 5 stars Thank you, French guy!.......2007-05-29

This is it, folks. An actual apex of film making, as only a French guy could bring.

And let me attest to this now: It's been BROUGHT!

LEON is probably my favorite movie of all time, but this movie just goes off in directions that no other film has gone before. I have now idea how this film can be so funny, so tragic, so inspiring, and so sad all at the same time, but it does, and it does it well.

Do you know what I'm most thankful for? That they didn't make a sequel. I (usually) really hate sequels, and a sequel to this would have blown. If you've seen Starship Troopers 2, then you know what I'm talking about.

So what would Marc Antony do? DUH! He'd drop Cleopatra like a small pox scab and run off with Mila Jovivic! (is that how you spell her name?)

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite movies.......2007-05-17

I love this movie, in fact I'm going to have to watch it again this week now that I have been reminded I have it. Oh yeah, superbit is pretty cool, but I bought the superbit version as a gift for my parents.

5 out of 5 stars Great action, great music and great comedy........2007-05-15

This baby will keep you from going to get the snacks.
Better hit the pause because you will not want to miss a single moment of this movie.

As an overdose of eye candy, Ultraviolet can be marginally recommended as the second-half of a double-feature with Aeon Flux. Both films are disposable adolescent fantasies featuring a butt-kicking babe (in this case, the svelte and sexy Milla Jovovich) in a dystopian future, and both specialize in the kind of barely-coherent, video-game storytelling that's constantly overwhelmed by an over-abundance of low-budget CGI. Director Kurt Wimmer fared much better with his earlier film Equilibrium, but he's trying for a lively comic-book vibe here (beginning with Hulk-like opening credits) with a digitally enhanced, Tron-like color palette. It largely suits this late-21st century story of a "blood war" between the ultra-violent Violet (Jovovich), member of a vampire-like group of resistance fighters infected with a man-made virus called the Hemophage, and the human Vice Cardinal Daxus (Nick Chinlund), who's determined to eliminate Violet's kind once and for all. Wimmer takes all of this way too seriously, crafting a plot involving Violet's rescue of a human clone boy (Cameron Bright) that's intended as an homage to John Cassevetes' 1980 drama Gloria, but Wimmer's good intentions are mostly lost in a repetitive series of chaotically choreographed fight scenes, mostly involving the tight-bodied Jovovich wiping out dozens of armor-clad enemies. It's all too numbingly hectic to qualify as a satisfying movie, but sci-fi buffs should give it a look anyway, if only to see how locations in Shanghai and Hong Kong contribute to the film's futuristic design.--Jeff Shannon

    Description

Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil, The Fifth Element), Cameron Bright (X-Men 3), Nick Chinlund (The Legend of Zorro) and William Fichtner (The Longest Yard) star in this theatrical set in the late 21st century, a subculture of humans have emerged who have been modified genetically by a vampire-like disease (Hemophagia), giving them enhanced speed, incredible stamina and acute intelligence, and as they are set apart from "normal" and "healthy" humans, the world is pushed to the brink of worldwide civil war (a war between humans and hemophages) aimed at the destruction of the "diseased" population. In the middle of this crossed-fire is - an infected woman - Ultraviolet, who finds herself protecting a nine-year-old boy who has been marked for death by the human government as he is believed to be a threat to humans.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars "Gun-blade" movie which commits seppuku, and then shoots itself in the head for good measure.......2007-06-10

If there is genius here, it must reside in the ultraviolet spectrum, for this fool's eyes can't see it. Perhaps writer/director Kurt Wimmer (Equilibrium, Sphere) thought it was sufficient to wrap ideas from past successes around the scaffolding of this movie's comic-book foundation. However, this structure will not last eons, and probably will crumble from the minds of most audience members the minute "End" is registered by their photoreceptors.

In the recent past, a bioweapons lab, seeking to modify the DNA of a known virus for military application, instead accidentally makes the pathogen infinitely more virulent than it was before. Far from causing a few sniffles, this new bug escapes the facility via rapid transmission and replication, and speeds along Homo sapiens evolution by a couple of hundred millennia of so, facilitating the emergence of the Hemophages. The government seeks to contain the "plague," and collects those who are contagious, sending them to concentration-camp-like isolation zones. When it is discovered that these collected persons are never heard from again, the Hemophages organize for their very survival. Although they have superhuman powers of lightning speed and great strength, the Hemophages seem incapable in making inroads against their oppressors: they require a secret weapon of their own.

Seemingly doomed to the role of fighting-vixen for all time, Milla Jovovich again dons the Lycra-impregnated jumpsuit to fiercely impart justice to any random redshirt who tumbles her way. Violet (Milla) is the ultimate infiltrator of the Hemophages. This group of pseudo-vampires has banded together to elude the hygiene-obsessed Daxus (Nick Chinlund). In principle, this seems simple--unfortunately, Daxus acts as despot over an army of gasmask-wearing, Uzi-toting thugs who seems singularly incapable of doing any actual fighting. The film opens with Violet piercing the security systems of Daxus' main laboratory. She successfully poses as a courier, enduring bone, retinal, DNA, blood, and voice-scans before being allowed full access to the package she has been "hired" to deliver. The real security-courier arrives seconds after the package has been delivered into Violet's gloved hand, triggering klaxons, low-level minion attacks, and an escape sequence which, quite literally, defies gravity.

Following countless action sequences--during which the viewer neither believes not cares that Violet's life is in any real danger--it is revealed that the "weapon" is really a young boy who acts as host for a virus capable of eradicating all Hemophages. Trapped in an extra-dimensional space inside the package, Six (Cameron Bright) soon whisks away Violet's common sense with one or two pouty expressions, requiring her to also find refuges from her previous kin.

There are an abundance of new and borrowed science-fiction ideas secreted away in this mess of a movie--a pity because a better story may have implemented them more interestingly, and more cohesively. The extra-dimensional storage space is capable of holding near-infinite quantities of weapons, ammunition, boys, etc. The sanitation-themed society bears similarity to the real world of yesterday, in regards to the maniacal devotion to facial-handkerchief implementation seen in individuals who succumbed to fear of the SARS virus. Super-powerful ninja-vampires suggest a "Blade"-like influence.

However, no amount of special ideas could have saved this movie from being, at best, fluff. The dialogue is atrocious, with endless pseudo-philosophical ruminations which remind us of the more easily-forgotten "deep" conversations we all thought we had in college. The plot is intricate in a maddeningly unimportant way, as I simply didn't care to puzzle the whole thing out. The action is absolutely unbelievable, horribly edited, and 100% bloodless--a bit of gore could have at least appeased the viewer's inner voyeur. Inside, we get sterile, uninteresting, and repetitive "gun-blade" fighting (guns are used as projectile and melee weapons). This movie is like "Equilibrium" under the influence of a fistful of diazepam, with a couple ounces of any given hallucinogen thrown in for good measure.

Chinlund is an excellent actor who steals every scene he's in--as the noseplug-wearing Daxus, he is suitably over-the-top and quite entertaining. Jovovich is eye-candy for those favoring females of Kievan Rus extraction, and little more. Bright is believable as a doomed boy-weapon thrown into a titanic struggle where he is only a pawn. He is also less creepy than he was in previous roles, but only by a hair.

"Ultraviolet" is recommended for those bed-bound, who are also fortunate enough to be accompanied by several good mates and a smattering of potent beverages. To summarize, this is a perfect drinking-game movie. Drink once for every ten vanquished enemies, twice for every five shots of Milla's exposed midriff, and thrice for every smile that cracks the face of Daxus.

1 out of 5 stars Makes 'Resident Evil' Look Like High Art.......2007-06-02

Admit it. Milla Jovovich with purple hair is hot. You're right, she is. Well, you're not alone because that seemed to be the only idea behind this production. Other than that, Ultraviolet is cold, stiff, shiny, cheap-looking, badly shot, and woodenly acted.

    Rent if you must!

3 out of 5 stars Comic book movie.......2007-05-30

As far as I can tell, it's a movie about a wig, sunglasses, and a bellybutton. Co-starring a motorcycle that can drive up a vertical surface.

I give it a star for the CGI artwork. Milla Jovovich is a very pretty girl, any movie she's in automatically rates 2 bonus stars.

This movie lets her stretch her acting skills, nice to see after watching Resident Evil - Apocalypse (Special Edition).

Don't miss her in The Fifth Element, co-starring Bruce Willis.

Let me first say, I loved this movie when I first saw it in High-Definition. It was absolutely beautiful, which is one of the huge things about this movie. Even in standard definition, this movie is easy on the eyes.

One problem with this movie is that it appears as if some of the storyline is missing, which apparently it was; somebody cut a two hour movie down to a 90 min. movie. Because of this, you have to pay an extraordinary amount of attention to this movie, and remember every detail because if you don't, it wont make sense later.

This movie is not great for an action-packed movie night with the kids, or with your buddies, but if you have time to focus on the story, what this movie is is an extraordinary piece of art with lots of symbolism, moments of humor, and huge, awesome action scenes. (And not just any action scenes, the sort of action scene you play out when you're a little kid where every single enemy until the last one falls at your hands)

Super seious Sci-Fi fans will find major MAJOR faults with this movie, but remember, they wet themselves when they see Star Wars, you probably don't. So, if you wanna see a movie that, although it isn't perfect, will probably entertain you, even to the point of making you think, get this one!

Alice is back and forced to face off against an unstoppable, bio-engineered killing machine in the action-packed sequel to the sci-fi smash hit.

5 out of 5 stars Fun to watch on the go!.......2007-05-09

RE: Apocalypse is a fun movie for me to watch, enjoying some of my favorite actors fighting through hordes of the undead to save a girl and get a way out of a locked down city before a nuclear explosion wipes everything out.

As a person studying abroad, I got the UMD for the reason that it's easy to watch on my PSP on the plane or late at night, not having a TV around to watch it on. And I don't have to worry about a larger disc being broken in transit or the case cracking.

A fun movie to watch, and compact enough to carry around easily.

    3 out of 5 stars R.E.: THE GAMERS VERSION........2007-04-28

When I first rented the original "Resident Evil" I was completely shocked at how much I liked it. I had zero expectations for it, yet was sucked in by it's story, characters and visualisation. So I ran out and purchased it (as soon as it was on sale). Since then I've watched it about 10 times, which is pretty remarkable considering I have roughly 350 DVDs to choose from. Given this, as a non-gamer, I was surprised to find that gamers were generally disappointed in this movie (not all of them, but most negative reviews were from gamers).

Now we have "Resident Evil- Apocalypse". Don't get to see "grown-up" movies at the theater, so I had to wait until the DVD release. I liked the first so much, I did not even think of renting this. I quickly bought the DVD (when it went on sale, never buy at full price)with much anticipation. Roughly 3 years later I have viewed it approximately (well, ACTUALLY)1 time. That's right, no type-o. JUST ONCE. It was not nearly as compelling as the first film (to me). Gone was the gripping story, the great camera work, the excellent character development. In the stead of this great stuff was some sort of "made-for-cable" goofy monster movie. Now, I did not hate it, (I actually like goofy monster movies) but it is not begging me to watch it again. It's so in-your-face that after one viewing, there was nothing left to see. No mystery. No subtlety. No sense of future dread. It was done.

But wow! Gamers really like it!! Now it all makes sense. Since I find shooter games extremely redundant and difficult to play more than once, I found this movie to be the same. A one timer (OK maybe 2). Kind of like sixth sense. Once you get to the end, well.. ...it's over.

Cinematically, comparing this to the fist film is like comparing the first "Star Wars" to the last (I'm talking release dates, not "Lucas-Time"). It's comparing something that is a carfully thought out and woven tale, to something that is simply a series of evens strung together to make a story. Kind of like Shooter video games. You travel down a linear path and take on what's in front of you. Unfortunatly this is a film!

I can't say don't buy this if you liked the first. It's nice to have a continuation of the first. Just don't go in with the same expectations.

    3 out of 5 stars Problematic sequel.......2007-01-27

The Umbrella Corporation decided to reopen the Hive, which allows the T-virus to escape and turn the inhabitants of Raccoon City into zombies. I might be slow when it comes to modern science, but I really fail to see the practical applications or economic potential of the T-virus given that it is not really regeneration human cells. Now the nuke option is making a lot of sense, which is bad news for Alice (Milla Jovovich), the genetically created ultimate fighting machine, who is trying to lead a group of survivors through the zombies to safety. But since this movie is based on a video game, things get worse.

The Umbrella Corporation sends Nemesis, a killing machine that may or may not be a genetically mutated version of Alice's boyfriend, Matt, from the previous film. Apparently shooting people before nuking them is in the best interest of the corporation.

This is a movie that really does not have much respect for the intelligence of its audience, all of whom would know to shot zombies wearing body armor in the head. At least the movie makes the videogames look really good in comparison, so there is that. You just have to be into playing the games.

3 out of 5 stars It sure is fun, but the first one was better!.......2007-01-23

Milla Jovavich is back as @$$kicking Alice in the sequel to 2002's `Resident Evil'. In `Apocalypse' we are given more of the same but it doesn't seem to really perform as well as the first film. The sets aren't as exciting or as memorable, and the inclusion of Nemeses may excite some it left me a bit stale. Milla is still as great and as fun as ever, and new to the game stars like Sienna Guillory (who plays video game favorite Jill Valentine) and Oded Fehr do a fine job of supporting her but the real stars are the CGI effects which work well for the most part. Expect lots of action and lots of blood but with Michelle Rodriguez's snappy Rain missing and the lack of originality found in the first `Resident Evil' film `Apocalypse' just isn't strong enough to warrant it's own following. Maybe three's a charm.

    2 out of 5 stars 1st film was better.......2006-12-24

The first film was much better than R.E. Apocalypse; more gore, better acting, better presentation overall, and it was done with a lot less money!

You remember high school? Really remember? If you think you do, watch this film: it'll all really come racing back. After changing the world with the generation-defining Slacker, director Richard Linklater turned his free-range vérité sensibility on the 1970s. As before, his all-seeing camera meanders across a landscape studded with goofy pop culture references and poignant glimpses of human nature. Only this time around, he's spreading a thick layer of nostalgia over the lens (and across the soundtrack). It's as if Fast Times at Ridgemont High was directed by Jean-Luc Godard. The story deals with a group of friends on the last day of high school, 1976. Good-natured football star Randall "Pink" Floyd navigates effortlessly between the warring worlds of jocks, stoners, wannabes, and rockers with girlfriend and new-freshman buddy in tow. Surprisingly, it's not a coming-of-age movie, but a film that dares ask the eternal, overwhelming, adolescent question, "What happens next?" It's a little too honest to be a light comedy (representative quote: "If I ever say these were the best years of my life, remind me to kill myself."). But it's also way too much fun (remember souped-up Corvettes and bicentennial madness?) to be just another existential-essay-on-celluloid. --Grant Balfour

    On the DVD
With a perfect combination of awesome '70s-era packaging and a totally rockin' selection of bonus features, the Criterion Collection's director-approved special edition two-disc release of Dazed and Confused instantly qualifies as one of the very best DVDs of 2006--the 30th anniversary of the Bicentennial, man! That's what I'm talkin' about! As a sublime companion piece to Criterion's release of Richard Linklater's previous film Slacker, the set comes in a slipcase (complete with "Physical Graffiti"-like picture-windows) festooned with Flair-pen high-school "doodling" (just like you'd scribble on your Pee Chee folders, back in the day), and the features get off on a high note (kinda like Slater, y'know?) with writer-director Linklater's feature-length commentary, which offers all aspiring filmmakers an important lesson protecting your vision and knowing when not to compromise. In recalling the many struggles he endured during production, Linklater covers a lot of territory (notes from the studio, the fantasy abundance of muscle cars, selection of music, and his acute disappointment when Robert Plant--but not Jimmy Page--refused to allow Led Zeppelin songs to be used in the film), and his engaging, good-humored perspective (and appropriate sense of vindication) clearly arises from his film's eventual acceptance as a classic. (For all you film buffs out there, Linklater quite rightly recommends Tim Hunter's Over the Edge and Lindsay Anderson's If... as "great teenage films" that defined the genre before Dazed.) The film itself never looked or sounded better (Linklater and cinematographer Lee Daniel supervised the high-def digital transfer), and a generous selection of deleted scenes will be welcomed by the film's legion of loyal fans.

The Disc 2 supplements are highlighted by Making "Dazed", filmmaker Kahane Corn's decade-in-the-making 50-minute documentary, chronicling all aspects of the production from casting to the Dazed tenth-anniversary celebration in Austin, Texas, in 2003. "Beer Bust at the Moon Tower" allows random viewing of a 118-minute compilation of behind-the-scenes footage, on-set interviews (with cast members both in and out of character), audition footage, and recollections from the anniversary bash. The accompanying 72-page booklet is a Criterion master-stroke: Designed like a small-scale high-school yearbook, it's filled with more "doodling" artwork, lots of photos, three appreciative mini-essays (the best being by journalist/author Chuck Klosterman), recollections by cast and crew, and humorous "Profiles in Confusion" portraits of the characters in Dazed, reprinted from the film's similarly designed companion book. It's all topped off by a miniature reproduction of the film's original poster, designed by Frank Kozik. In terms of capturing "The Spirit of '76" and the film's celebratory sense of anti-nostalgia, this is surely one of Criterion's finest releases to date. --Jeff Shannon

    5 out of 5 stars Great Movie!.......2007-06-09

We loved this movie, and apparently someone else loved the movie just as much because whoever it was, stole our movie! It was so great, if you love old movies, this one is a great one!

4 out of 5 stars Not quite "Slacker"; worth it for Wiley Wiggins and others.......2007-05-29

I moved to Austin, Texas in June 1976. This movie is supposedly set in Austin during that time, but I think it fits more into West Texas. I don't think the hazing and the guns portrayed here were characteristic of Austin, which was a sleepy little college and state government town in 1976.

But the film is a period piece, which is a favorite genre for me and one has the chance to see if the producer/director gets things right, whether it's clothes, hairstyles, cars, etc. or whatever. Here they get most of that right. The "muscle cars" again suggest West Texas more than Austin; so does the football and the hazing. "Slacker" is explicitly set in Austin, and I recognize scenes from thirty years ago in that movie. But I need to check on this, because the "moonlight towers" scene here suggests that the movie is set in Austin. (Alas, I think those are gone now, as are some other landmarks.)

One of the most interesting things about this film is that actors like Ben Affleck and Matthew McConaughey are big stars now, but Wiley Wiggins steals every scene here, and BA and MM are cardboard characters. And the director failed to elicit some kind of ambiguity about the Affleck character. Why does he want to go around spanking these young boys?
Was this kind of hazing really a tradition at the school or what? Then again, the '70s were pretty free for kids compared to what we see today.

I think Wiggins in this movie is easily the best actor. And he is the central character. He doesn't have Jason London's classic good looks, but he has those "geeky" good looks that remind one of high school reunions where people see a classmate in a new light and wonder how anyone could have overlooked guys or girls who were maybe not that "popular" but who were really cool at the time and not that many people noticed. And like those kids, "Mitch", the Wiggins character here, is trying to figure out how he fits in or if he does, so the film reminds you maybe of yourself or of kids you knew who struggled.

You know the type. Maybe you were the type. So in a way, this movie is kind of like "Ridgmont High" meets "The Wonder Years".

Let's hope to see more of Wiggins; he's apparently still active in Austin, which is a great city but not as cool in some ways as it was thirty years ago. And thanks to stuff like cell phones, kids don't have the kind of adventures and fun they did back then, in Austin or anywhere.

    5 out of 5 stars Sweet.......2007-05-25

For those who don't think current-day teenagers would hit it off well with a movie about the last day of high school in 1976, think again. I loved this movie the first time I saw it, and have seen it four times since.

The themes in teenage life now are the same as they were then - rebellion and conformity, drugs, clashes with authority, the search for freedom and the testing of boundaries, the cliques of high school - and every viewer can find a character to identify with in "Dazed and Confused". We meet a diverse cast of stoners, jocks, nerds, newly inaugurated seniors, the freshest of freshmen, and we take an all too brief journey with them through the activities of the last day of school in 1976. It's just a snapshot of their life, but it's a vivid snapshot and it's one I never tire of looking at.

Randall "Pink" Floyd (Jason London) is as close to a protagonist as we get in this ensemble cast. He's a football player and an all-round good guy who slips effortlessly in and out of the different cliques. He smokes with the stoners, plays football with the jocks, shoots pool with the nerds, and takes pity on freshman Mitch Kramer (Wiley Wiggins) who as the brother of one of the senior girls, is the target of the jocks' fury.

Memorable performances come from every single member of this cast - Anthony Rapp, Adam Goldberg and Marissa Ribisi as geeks Tony, Mike and Cynthia, Ben Affleck doing a thoroughly amusing turn as O'Bannion (a football player who deliberately failed his exams so he could be a senior for two years in a row), Cole Hauser as jock Benny, Shawn Andrews as the school dealer Kevin, Wiley Wiggins as Mitch, and Sasha Jenson as Pink's best friend Don, among others.

For me, however, the shining stars here are Jason London himself, Rory Cochrane as stoner Slater, and Matthew McConaughey as Wooderson, that guy who leaves high school but just never seems to grow out of hanging out with teenagers. Jason London handles the struggle with his coach's blatant attempt at control - all football players must sign a commitment not to drink, smoke or engage in any other activities which might prevent them from performing at their best - just right, and by halfway through the movie you wish this guy was your best friend. McConaughey has some of the best lines in his movie, including the notorious and oft-quoted, "That's what I love about these high-school girls. I get older, they stay the same age," and of course his motto, "Just keep livin'. L-i-v-i-n." His Wooderson is slightly sleazy but never creepy and always very cool, and it's a shame that McConaughey made so many bad career choices after this movie, because it's clear here that he has real talent.

And Slater? Rory Cochrane turns the stoner archetype into a character I would personally love to take on a roadtrip. From the largely improvised Martha Washington speech to the way he laughs at the hazing of the freshmen, Cochrane has Slater - who is high on pot (and who also drops acid at one point) for the entire movie - down perfectly. Granted, we have the long hair and the constant use of "man", but in Cochrane's capable hands what could be a cliche is turned into a likable, unbelievably cool, REAL character.

If you want a feel-good seventies movie with good old-fashioned freshman hazing, a party, a fight, beer, and pot, this is your movie. If you want a philosophical look at high school and the uncertainty of the future, this is your movie. If you want a character study of a realistic cross-section of the teenage population, this is your movie.

What are you waiting for? Buy this movie. You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars "The older you get, the more rules they're gonna try to get you to follow...".......2007-05-18

Texas, May 1976. It's the last day of school, which means the rising high school seniors will be busy hazing the rising freshmen amidst drinking, smoking dope, and trying to get laid. "Dazed and Confused," considered by some to be the greatest high school/'70s comedy of all-time, follows the lives of these students during a memorable 24-hour period.

Like many of Richard Linklater's films, "Dazed And Confused" is an ensemble piece with little plot. But the film's lack of plot actually works to its advantage because it gives the film a more naturalistic feel. Randall "Pink" Floyd (Jason London) is a star football player and rising senior trying to decide whether to play by team rules or rebel -- not to mention wondering where his life fits in the big scheme of things. Mitch Kramer (Wiley Wiggins) is a rising freshman trying to avoid a beatdown from Fred O'Bannion (Ben Affleck) and his cronies, while also finding romance, attempting to buy his first underage beer, and trying to fit in with an older crew.

Dazed is filled with notable cameos and characters, including Joey Lauren Adams ("Chasing Amy") and Parker Posey as bitchy rising seniors who delight in hazing the younger women, Adam Goldberg in classic nerd form, Matthew McConaughy as a post-grad pothead, and Rory Cochrane & Sasha Jenson as Pink's jock friends.

Among the talented cast, Wiggins, Affleck and McConaughey stand out. Wiggins feels authentic as the gawky freshman trying to fit in. As the idiotic O'Bannion, Affleck hilariously captures the meathead mentality. But the real star is McConaughey in an uproarious role as smooth stoner David Wooderson. After this breakout flick, McConaughey soon became a Hollywood heartthrob and saw his career regress due to poor role choices and miserable miscasting. Here, though, he exudes charisma and steals scene after scene with lines like, "That's what I like about these high school girls, I keep getting older, they stay the same age."

"Dazed" will undoubtedly have you reminsincing about the glorious high school years. But Linklater also invests the film with some subtle philosophical questions that are surprising to find in a nostalgic comedy like this. After a wild night of partying, Pink remarks to his friends, "All I'm saying is that if I ever start referring to these as the best years of my life -- remind me to kill myself." Interesting food for thought.

"Dazed and Confused" has gained a well-deserved cult following as one of the greatest party films of all-time. Lack of plot aside, this is a riotously entertaining flick that's guaranteed to generate a ton of laughs and get you into the party spirit.

    5 out of 5 stars Dazed - Criterion Collection.......2007-05-18

Excellent movie. Its a shame Richard Linklater doesnt direct movies like this anymore. The extras on the DVD are well worth it. Highly recommended.

    Description

America, 1976. The last day of school. Bongs blaze, bell-bottoms ring, and rock and roll rocks. Among the best teen films ever made, Richard Linklater's Dazed and Confused eavesdrops on a group of seniors-to-be and incoming freshmen. A launching pad for a number of future stars, Linklater's first studio effort also features endlessly quotable dialogue and a blasting, stadium-ready soundtrack. Sidestepping nostalgia, Dazed and Confused is less about "the best years of our lives" than the boredom, angst, and excitement of teenagers waiting . . . for something to happen

Ancient curses, all-powerful monsters, shape-changing assassins, scantily-clad stewardesses, laser battles, huge explosions, a perfect woman, a malcontent hero--what more can you ask of a big-budget science fiction movie?

Better hit the pause because you will not want to miss a single moment of this movie.

This camp spectacle stars Sherilyn Fenn (Boxing Helena) as an upper-crust Southern belle who abandons the posh life for sex on the road with a carny worker. Naturally, the older folk (Burl Ives, Louise Fletcher) take exception. Typically silly, soft-porn stuff from director Zalman King (Wild Orchid), this erotic joke of a movie is good for putting one's busy brain on hold for awhile. 4 out of 5 stars Very interesting movie.......2007-05-29

I watched this movie and knew nothing about it's director or writer. I did like this movie and also liked the plot that it offered as well. I thought that the actors delivered a very believable charactors and the story was interesting. What I did find disappointing was the information that I found on the net about the full screen verses the wide screen version. In the full screen version they edit out the "male nudity" of Richard Tyson but don't edit out the "female nudity" of Sherilyn Fenn. I don't have a problem with female nudity and how it is presented. What I do have a problem with is when they edit out the male nudity for no reason other than to make the screen smaller. I will recommend this movie, but purchase the widescreen to actually see this movie the way it was meant to be.

    3 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2006-11-04

Two Moon Junction is the story of a woman who dismisses the comforts of her family's riches and wealth to follow her obsession with a carnival rogue. Following those obsessions, she engages in a steamy, passionate affair with this man. Surrounding this affair is her grandmother, and the matriarch of the family is not happy with her granddaughter's selection in lovers. She plots with the local sheriff to stop the affair and save her family's reputation.

The plot of this story is simple and plausible, but the acting left a lot to be desired, and appeared to be more on the level of an overrated "B" movie. The steamy/ passionate sex scenes were just that...exciting, steamy and seductive, at least until our leading man opened his mouth. His views of their affair along with his arrogant, cocky attitude sliced through any romance in this story, and dropped it's rating to something slightly above a stag party flick.

3 out of 5 stars For those too shy to buy hardcore pornography.......2006-10-17

Zalman King makes "erotic" movies, by which I mean he has relatively good-looking white people groping at each other and fancy angles that don't show any of the good stuff. This softcore porn is the sort of crud they broadcast on cheap cable networks. Usually they star Shannon Tweed or other C-list actresses who were hot-lookin' in their 20s and aged badly but still need work. The films are often labeled "erotic thrillers" because there is a pretense of mystery or danger. They are made for paunchy, aging, balding white men who can't get a date and lack the gonads to go to the hardcore porno shop and get some decent material for their Onanism sessions. Poor suckaz.

But still, Sherilyn Fenn is hot for a white chick. Looks better with her dark hair, though, so this movie kinda wastes what little natural resources it has by bleaching her out. I'm guessing whoever made that decision is gay or blind.

    4 out of 5 stars Two Moon Junction - Guilty-Pleasure List Worthy.......2006-08-15

This one is on my guilty-pleasure list. It's a soft-core romance/drama, 1988, starring Sherilyn Fenn (Twin Peaks fame) and Richard Tyson (the dad in Kindergarten cop). Sherilyn plays a southern belle from a wealthy family, engaged to Martin Hewitt - hmm, I'm remembering him with Brooke Shields in Endless Love with the same-named theme song - the approved rich boy. She winds up having a torrid fling with Richard and ultimately has to choose between what is right for her heart, or maybe just loins, and what her family has endorsed. Her grandmother is played by Louise Fletcher (an older, sophisticated and very platinum Nurse Ratchet from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest!). Burl Ives is the Sheriff assigned to break up the lovers. Kristy McNichol is all grown up and makes an appearance vying for Richard's attention too.

Shall we add more obstacles to Sherilyn's interest in Richard and her family's disapproval? Well, sure...he's a CARNEY. Let's add Herve Villechaize to the carnival craziness, and no, I'm not kidding. I figure the next time I watch this movie he'll finally reward me with a familiar cry of "the plane! the plane!"

Okay, it's definitely a chick flick but the soft-core factor will hold your attention as well, gentlemen. The bachelor and bachelorette parties are...well...fun.

    1 out of 5 stars hahahhahahah..........2006-08-10
