Robin Williams won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, and actors Matt Damon and Ben Affleck nabbed one for Best Original Screenplay, but the feel-good hit <I>Good Will Hunting</I> triumphs because of its gifted director, Gus Van Sant. The unconventional director (<I>My Own Private Idaho</I>, <I>Drugstore Cowboy</I>) saves a script marred by vanity and clunky character development by yanking soulful, touching performances out of his entire cast (amazingly, even one by Williams that's relatively schtick-free). Van Sant pulls off the equivalent of what George Cukor accomplished for women's melodrama in the '30s and '40s: He's crafted an intelligent, unabashedly emotional male weepie about men trying to find inner-wisdom.

Matt Damon stars as Will Hunting, a closet math genius who ignores his gift in favor of nightly boozing and fighting with South Boston buddies (co-writer Ben Affleck among them). While working as a university janitor, he solves an impossible calculus problem scribbled on a hallway blackboard and reluctantly becomes the prodigy of an arrogant MIT professor (Stellan Skarsgård). Damon only avoids prison by agreeing to see psychiatrists, all of whom he mocks or psychologically destroys until he meets his match in the professor's former childhood friend, played by Williams. Both doctor and patient are haunted by the past, and as mutual respect develops, the healing process begins. The film's beauty lies not with grand climaxes, but with small, quiet moments. Scenes such as Affleck's clumsy pep talk to Damon while they drink beer after work, or any number of therapy session between Williams and Damon offer poignant looks at the awkward ways men show affection and feeling for one another. <I>--Dave McCoy</I>

Description

A true motion picture phenomenon, this triumphant story was nominated for 9 Academy Awards(R) -- winning Oscars for Robin Williams (Best Supporting Actor) and hot newcomers Matt Damon and Ben Affleck (Best Original Screenplay). The most brilliant mind at America's top university isn't a student ... he's the kid who cleans the floors! Will Hunting (Damon) is a headstrong, working-class genius who's failing the lessons of life. After one too many run-ins with the law, Will's last chance is a psychology professor (Williams), who might be the only man who can reach him! With acclaimed performances from Academy Award(R)-nominee Minnie Driver (GROSSE POINTE BLANK) and Ben Affleck (ARMAGEDDON) -- you'll find GOOD WILL HUNTING a powerful and unforgettable movie experience!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Could've been better with different cast.......2007-05-30

Movies can be placed, you could say, into 3 categories:

1. Movies to be seen in a theater or owned on DVD
2. Movies to rent
3. Movies to ignore

This one, for me, falls into the second category. Who would believe Matt Damon is some blue collar genius? Damon is not a good actor in my opinion. Ben Affleck is worse. Robin Williams is obnoxious. This film used the wrong actors.

5 out of 5 stars Among the Best Films EVER........2007-05-21

One of the most affecting movies in my life I've ever seen. This movie is an example of why movies can be good, why they can change you're life. One of my favorite quote's from the movie is: "You're sitting on the winning lottery ticket and your too afraid to cash it in." Not only one of my all time favorite films but Elliot Smith who's music they used PERFECTLT for the film is one of my favorite artists. Do yourself a favor and see this film.

5 out of 5 stars Not very realistic, but very idealistic.......2007-05-19

Somebodies and Nobodies: Overcoming the Abuse of Rank
Not many people can ever say that they have been in any kind of situation like that of
Will Hunting and the Field's Medalist , let alone that of a psychologist faced with
helping a scared by society genius. One thing is important here:
no professor that I have ever met is going to put himself out
for someone not in his elite class. Such behavior in our society is taboo.
He would be endangering his own position in society
and such men don't get to that high a point by not playing the social games very seriously.
The closest that anyone came to this level of idealism and selflessness in history is Dr. Hardy
in his mentorship of Ramanujan.

5 out of 5 stars WOW DANG ONE OF THE BEST TV DVD-MOVE FOR SHORE EVER DONE.......2007-05-08

NOW I COULD EASYLY SAY THIS WILL GO DOWN AS ONE OF THE GRATEST MOVE EVER MADE IN THE WORLD THAT IS SO FOR SHORE & THAT IS PUTTING IT LIGHTLY

5 out of 5 stars Excellent on so many levels!.......2007-04-18

The casting of Robin Williams, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon was positively spot on. Their communication on-screen was seamless. Their reactions were so real. This movie was smartly-written, brilliantly directed and expertly produced. The storyline was fanciful but believable enough to allow the viewer to suspend whatever reality they might be clinging to.

The love story of Minnie Driver/Matt Damon complicated by the sessions with Robin Williams was supurbly portrayed. You could almost feel Robin Williams' character truly drawing from real life experiences. I truly felt like he was speaking about a lost love, not reciting memorized lines.

The dialog was fresh and I have to tell you that the story really touched me.... HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

This epic, animated 1997 fantasy has already made history as the top-grossing domestic feature ever released in Japan, where its combination of mythic themes, mystical forces, and ravishing visuals tapped deeply into cultural identity and contemporary, ecological anxieties. For international animation and <I>anime</I> fans, <I>Princess Mononoke</I> represents an auspicious next step for its revered creator, Hayao Miyazaki (<I>My Neighbor Totoro</I>, <I>Kiki's Delivery Service</I>), an acknowledged <I>anime</I> pioneer, whose painterly style, vivid character design, and stylized approach to storytelling take ambitious, evolutionary steps here.

Set in medieval Japan, Miyazaki's original story envisions a struggle between nature and man. The march of technology, embodied in the dark iron forges of the ambitious Tatara clan, threatens the natural forces explicit in the benevolent Great God of the Forest and the wide-eyed, spectral spirits he protects. When Ashitaka, a young warrior from a remote, and endangered, village clan, kills a ravenous, boar-like monster, he discovers the beast is in fact an infectious "demon god," transformed by human anger. Ashitaka's quest to solve the beast's fatal curse brings him into the midst of human political intrigues as well as the more crucial battle between man and nature.

Miyazaki's convoluted fable is clearly not the stuff of kiddie matinees, nor is the often graphic violence depicted during the battles that ensue. If some younger viewers (or less attentive older ones) will wish for a diagram to sort out the players, Miyazaki's atmospheric world and its lush visual design are reasons enough to watch. For the English-language version, Miramax assembled an impressive vocal cast including Gillian Anderson, Billy Crudup (as Ashitaka), Claire Danes (as San), Minnie Driver (as Lady Eboshi), Billy Bob Thornton, and Jada Pinkett Smith. They bring added nuance to a very different kind of magic kingdom. Recommended for ages 12 and older. <I>--Sam Sutherland</I>

5 out of 5 stars A thousand carats gem!.......2007-06-19

The Princess Mononoke is a contemporary fable, an outstanding story, a vibrant and emotive warning for us, the human beings, but besides, iot's an invitation and (if I may)a smart returm to the roots of myth and the encounter with the Geeat Spirit of the Forest, wolves and characters that have aprofound specific weight and transcendence into we denominate the primordial essence of the nature's scream.

Far beyond its relevant significance, there is a lot of significative issues that you should take into account, because the kinetic script involves you from start to finish.

Don't overlook this picture, beacuse it's much more mature than many pretended films for adults.

Fabulous is the word to qualify this extraordinary novie. Don't miss it!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best movies ever made.......2007-05-31

It's an allegory about the moment when Humankind stopped living with the Natural and Spirit worlds, and sought to master them. Man's need for Nature, BTW, was also a major theme of Miyazaki Hayao's earlier classic "My Neighbor Tottoro". The English dub is okay, but do yourself a favor and listen to the Japanese Audio with the subtitles "on". Don't be put off by the "Anime" tag. This isn't about transforming superheroes or kiddy card games. It's a heart-felt epic, and you'll forget you're watching animation within a few minutes of hitting "play". If at least one Miyazaki film isn't on your list of "Best Movies-Ever", then truly you are missing out.

5 out of 5 stars Argueably the best anime I've ever seen........2007-05-23

I am a huge fan of anime. I have watched everything from Naruto (unfortunately) to Bleach (highly recommended) but this anime movie is the best I have ever seen. It is a good watch for anyone, even those who simply think of anime as simply a "cartoon." The characters are incredibly deep and the usual sense of right and wrong is blurred creating for an incredibly interesting ride. I highly recommend this film to everyone. Hope you enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Must See.......2007-05-14

My family LOVES this movie. It is "One of Roger Ebert's top 10" for a reason. The cast is great, the story is moving and the animation is breathtaking. The really cool thing about this DVD is you can watch it in English or in Japanese with English subtitles.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent movie.......2007-05-13

After I saw Spirited Away I was interested in this type of movies. I am very satisfied with this movie. Highly recommended!

The judicial system is supposed to protect them. But when a youthful prank in New Yorks Hells Kitchen spins out of control, the punishment does not fit the crime. Sentenced to the Wilkinson School for Boys, four pals are mistreated at will by a cadre of sadistic guards. Now, 15 years later, they have an unexpected opportunity to use that system-for revenge. Friendship. Loyalty. Retribution. From its telltale opening lines to its stunning courtroom climax, Sleepers is spellbinding entertainment. With a vengeance.

The first thing you need to know about <I>Sleepers</I> is that it's based on a novel by Lorenzo Carcaterra that was allegedly based on a true story. The movie repeats this bogus claim, which was attacked and determined by a wide majority to be misleading. Knowing this, <I>Sleepers</I> can be a problematic movie because it's too neat, too clean, too manipulative in terms of legal justice and dramatic impact to be truly convincing. And yet, with its stellar cast directed by Barry Levinson, the movie succeeds as gripping entertainment, and its tale of complex morality--despite a dubious emphasis on homophobic revenge--is sufficiently provocative. It's about four boys in New York's Hell's Kitchen district who are sent to reform school, where they must endure routine sexual assaults by the sadistic guards. Years after their release, the opportunity for revenge proves irresistible for two of the young men, who must then rely on the other pair of friends (Brad Pitt, Jason Patric), a loyal priest (Robert De Niro), and a shabby lawyer (Dustin Hoffman) to defend them in court. Despite the compelling ambiguities of the story, there's never any doubt about how we're supposed to feel, and the screenplay glosses over the story's most difficult moral dilemmas. And yet, <I>Sleepers</I> grabs your attention and pulls you into its intense story of friendship and the price of loyalty under extreme conditions. The movie's New York settings are vividly authentic, and Minnie Driver makes a strong impression as a long-time friend of the loyal group of guys. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

5 out of 5 stars WHAT A CRAZY TWIST!.......2007-03-26

I WASNT TOO SURE IF I WAS GOING TO LIKE THIS MOVIE BUT ITS A WONDERFUL MOVIE. THE STORY HAD A CRAZY TWIST AND I NEVER THOUGHT THAT THIS MOVIE WOULD BE THIS INTENSE. ITS GREAT I WOULD RECOMEND EVERYONE TO SEE IT, BUT THIS IS NOT A FAMILY MOVIE UNLESS THE CHILDREN ARE OLDER!

5 out of 5 stars So many missteps.......2007-03-14

Man, with this cast you really could have blown the roof off the house. I mean, all the national treasures of acting are here -- except for Kevin Spacey, Tommy Lee Jones, Will Smith, Martin Lawrence, John Travolta, Tim Allen and Carlos Mencia.

The kids were really annoying, right? How many astonished close-ups of them were we gonna get? Get over it. Big deal, a prison guard did some bad things to you. They acted like it didn't happen to everyone.

Dustin Hoffman is a national gem. He get so into character that sometimes he forgets to get back into Dustin. At least, that's all I can think -- because I saw him in Manhattan and I kept yelling, "Hey Dustin, want to go get a hot cocoa and some Buggles (crunchy corn snacks)?" But he acted as if he didn't hear me -- must of been deep into his character, yes?

4 out of 5 stars A feel good movie........2007-01-12

This movie is depressing, dark and a real eye-opener. Good cast, and good court-room drama. A strong cast and solid performances make this movie a must watch.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining well made film about a difficult subject.......2006-11-28

This film deals with a topic that continually arises in our culture, the sexual molestation of children by adults in authority positions. In some ways the film compliments the more contemporary film "Mysterious Skin" which deals with a similar theme. I will first discuss an overall assessment of the film and then return to the theme of sexual molestation and the long path to recovery from sexual molestation.

As a dramatic engaging film, this product is very good. The acting of Robert DeNero, Kevin Bacon, Jason Patric, Minnie Driver, Billy Crudup, Brad Pitt, and Dustin Hoffman is super. DeNero is wonderful as the priest put in an ethical dilemna. Jason Patric holds the second half of the film together as the most psychologically sound of the victims. Kevin Bacon is creepy and realistic as the sadistic molester. Dustin Hoffman is a rare talent as he plays an incompetent alcoholic drug addicted second rate lawyer. Also note that the child actors were very good also. The plot is well developed and engaging, especially the division of the film into childhood and adulthood experiences. The Count of Monte Cristo by Dumas is also used as a unifying theme of imprisonment, escape, planned revenge, and redemption from pain. The cinematography was very good (notice the camera angels and techniques used on the city streets, the courtroom, and especially in the youth facility) and sound track (with serious almost tragic overtones) are first rate. Overall the film gets 5 out of 5 points.

The theme of sexual molestation of children by adults is a difficult and disturbing topic. In this film, 4 boys are molested, with two emerging as angry killers and two emerging with intact emotional stability. Brad Pitt plays the young lawyer who uses the court room to unearth the sexual crimes committed by several guards in the correctional facility. Jason Patric however plays the victim with the the strongest emotional stability and who is capable of developing loving relationships and moving forward with his life. Revenge was the theme that holds the second half of the film together, carefully plotted and executed by two of the victims, impulsively and self defeating by the other two.

A fine film worthy of your time.

Although it's not as bold as Oscar darling Chicago, The Phantom of the Opera continues the resuscitation of the movie musical with a faithful adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's blockbuster stage musical. Emmy Rossum glows in a breakout role as opera ingénue Christine Daae, and if phantom Gerard Butler isn't Rossum's match vocally, he does convey menace and sensuality in such numbers as "The Music of the Night." The most experienced musical theater veteran in the cast, romantic lead Patrick Wilson, sings sweetly but seems wooden. The biggest name in the cast, Minnie Driver, hams it up as diva Carlotta, and she's the only principal whose voice was dubbed (though she does sing the closing-credit number, "Learn to Be Lonely," which is also the only new song).

Director Joel Schumacher, no stranger to visual spectacle, seems to have found a good match in Lloyd Webber's larger-than-life vision of Gaston LeRoux's Gothic horror-romance. His weakness is cuing too many audience-reaction shots and showing too much of the lurking Phantom, but when he calms down and lets Rossum sings "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" alone in a silent graveyard, it's exquisite.

<table align=left bgcolor=F4A460 cellpadding=4> <tr> <td align=center valign=center> <font face=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif size=-1 color=FFFFFF> <b>Read our CD buying guide</b>
</font></td></tr></table> Those who consider the stage musical shallow and overblown probably won't have their minds changed by the movie, and devotees will forever rue that the movie took the better part of two decades to develop, which prevented the casting of original principals Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman. Still, The Phantom of the Opera is a welcome exception to the long line of ill-conceived Broadway-to-movie travesties.

<b>DVD Features</b>
The special edition of <I>The Phantom of the Opera</I> has two major extras. "Behind the Mask: The Story of <I>The Phantom of the Opera</I>" is an hourlong documentary tracing the genesis of the stage show, with interviews of composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, director Harold Prince, producer Cameron Macintosh, lyricists Richard Stilgoe and Charles Hart, choreographer Gillian Lynne, and others. Conspicuously absent are stars Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford. Both do appear in video clips, including Brightman performing with Colm Wilkinson at an early workshop, and Crawford is the subject of a casting segment. Other brief scenes from the show are represented by a 2001 production. The other major feature is the 45-minute making-of focusing on the movie, including casting and the selection of director Joel Schumacher Both are well-done productions by Lloyd Webber's Really Useful Group.

The deleted scene is a new song written by Lloyd Webber and Charles Hart, "No One Would Listen," sung by the Phantom toward the end of the movie. It's a beautiful song that, along with Madame Giry's story, makes him a more sympathetic character. But because that bit of backstory already slowed down the ending, it was probably a good move to cut the song. --David Horiuchi

I borrowed a copy "The Phantom of the Opera" (Widescreen Edition)May 3, 2005, 141 minutes Disc-One Set from a Friend and just finished viewing the DVD Tonight!!!! You will want to get the Special Edition, May 3, 2005, Two-Disc Set if you want to view the Special Features which includes Two Major Extras. "Behind the Mask: The Story of The Phantom of the Opera" is an hourlong documentary along with the other Major Extra a 45-minute Making-of the Movie along with some minor extras. I prefer the Special Edition Two-Disc Set over the One-Disc Set where the Special Features are omitted but has only the Theatrical Trailer!!

This 2005 Movie Directed by Joel Schumacher is simply a "Grand Opera Movie" worthy of a 5 Star Rating!!! So, Turn up the DVD Volume and Enjoy!!

If you appreciate the World of Arts and Music you will not be disappointed with Andrew Lloyd Webber's Score!!

Emmy Rossum(Christine)Stole the Show with her Acting and Heavenly Singing Performance!!
Gerard Butler(The Phantom) was the Handsome Phantom with a Good Voice that was Physically Fit allowing his character to be very active in the Movie Opera Play. Gerard's incredible performance of "Music of the Night" was Outstanding and better than Michael Crawford's Voice Bass Notes!!
Patrick Wilson(Raoul)Singing was Good and his Character played the Alleged BoyFriend that was to Rescue Christine from the Evil Phanton!! Supporting Actress Minnie Driver and Miranda Richardson had limited but Solid Roles!!!

The Movie was able to capture the Magical Live Opera Essence with A Wonderfully Lavished Colored Staged along with a complete supporting cast for this Movie Stage Musical!!

This Movie allows the viewer to feel the Musical Opera without actually being at your Local Opera House!!

Magical Enchantment begins in a 1919 Auction at the Paris Opera Populaire when the Populaire VICTORIAN Ceiling Light Fixture CHANDELIER that was damaged long time ago is prepared for lighting before Auction bidding starts where the auctioneer, porters and bidders are present with Two Mystery Bidders???

A Bright Flash of Light!!, like the "Rebirth of a Rising Phoenix from the Ashes" transports the Entire Audience back to the Past in 1870 when the Paris Opera was at its height of Magical Enchantment!!!

The Paris Opera Populaire actually Rises very Slowly and Mystical like a Phoenix before your very Human Eyes until the Magical Live Opera Essence of it's Beauty is fully Transformed and Alive!!!!!

Nothing will replace the Live version of "The Phantom of the Opera" coming to your city but it will be Definitely Easier to Live without until the Live Opera version of "The Phantom of Opera" Arrives!!

One of the most ambitious, lavish, astounding, and thrillingly beautiful films I've seen since my eye-popping initial spectacular, i.e. "Gone With the Wind" when it was first released long, long ago. As perfect as possibleand have lost count of the times I've enjoyed this film both for visual experience and for the marvelous music.

5 out of 5 stars Good service.......2007-06-08

Fast service. We owned this and lent it out, big mistake. Thank you for serving your country by selling to APO/FPO addresses.

5 out of 5 stars Cinematic version of Broadway musical is visually stunning and highly satisfactory..........2007-06-08

After reading some indifferent reviews from several so-called qualified "critics", I kept my fingers crossed and hoped for the best because, frankly, I love the Andrew Lloyd Webber score that I had only heard on recordings. Never saw the stage version.

I loved it!! And if you appreciate musicals of this caliber (it's operatic in concept), you'll find much to admire.

Handsome Gerard Butler has been unfairly attacked for giving a poor vocal performance because he doesn't have the high tenor capabilities of Michael Crawford. Forget about it--he's in fine shape, physically and vocally and delivers a strong, sometimes tender and always masculine performance that is altogether in keeping with this concept of the story. He is strong in conveying the pain of the tortured creature he plays.

Others are well cast too. Emmy Rossum has a clear, lyric soprano voice and is clearly up to the task of performing the demanding songs in a pleasing fashion while projecting youthful innocence and luminous beauty.

Patrick Wilson is very effective as Raoul. His diction is impeccable, even in song. Unfortunately, the same cannot always be said of the other singers--many times the lack of clear enunciation leaves the lyrics inexplicable, which was true in the stage version too.

Aside from minor flaws, the film is gorgeous to look at, brilliantly staged for maximum effect from the very opening shot of the Paris Opera Populaire in 1916 (photographed in black and white) until the final climactic scenes beneath the famed opera house. All of it is filmed in a continually moving and prowling camera movement that makes us feel that the phantom's prowling has become part of our viewing experience.

It all has a dark, glittering style that is entirely in keeping with the atmosphere needed to make this kind of story ring true. Richly photographed and sensuous in its appeal, it will keep you absorbed throughout its entire running time. The full orchestra orchestrations of the 110 piece orchestra are an added bonus for the movie version, particularly when rendering the Phantom theme at full throttle.

All I can say is, if you like the Webber score, you'll love what they've accomplished here, giving lush cinematic style to the prowling camera-work that seems to cover every corner of the mysterious stage settings.

Minnie Driver provides effective comic relief as La Carlotta in her over-the-top performance, as do Ciarin Hinds and Simon Callow as the new opera owners. Settings, costumes and John Mathieson's stunning cinematography cannot be praised highly enough.

Don't believe those negative reviews. No doubt this will be regarded as a masterpiece in years to come, when strict adherence to the stage version is no longer important and comparisons to Brightman and Crawford are relegated to the past. Furthermore, from what I've seen of Brightman's performance, her stylized approach to the role never would have worked on film.

Visually, it's one of the most sumptuous productions of this story that you are ever likely to see.

1 out of 5 stars Well that was horrible.......2007-06-08

What is this. This is not scary. But its funny.

Heres the plot:

Some handicap dude with funny beard buys a monkey toy and goes to graveyard. While he does that he remembers some things from his life.
One of them is his highschool girlfriend and some dude who needs a plastic surgery. that ugly dude is about 40 or something and he still lives in the basement. what a shame.

anyway the ugly dude and the young dude fight in the fakest swordfight ever made and then they all get together, sing and cry and then make out. then the ugly dude breaks a mirror and goes somewhere.

in the end of the movie the old guy is at graveyard staring at a rose and then starts chocking but then the movie ends.

i think the following needs to be done in order to make this movie interesting:

1. remove all the garbage opera singing (come on, we live 21st century now. put some 50 cent or something)
2. transform the ugly dude so he has magical powers or hes like vampire or something
3. MORE BLOOD. this is PHANTOM of the opera. there should be blood, more death and gore none of that sissy singing stuff.

Anyway, Im disappointed with my purchase. I thought this was going to be cool but it turned out horrible.

DONT BUY IT!!!

Hit man Martin Q. Blank (John Cusack) is in an awkward situation. Several of them, actually. He's attending his high school reunion on an assignment; he's got a rival hit man (Dan Aykroyd) on his tail; and he's going to have to explain to his old girlfriend (Minnie Driver) why he stood her up on prom night. This amiable black comedy, cowritten by Cusack and directed by Jonathan Demme protégé George Armitage (<I>Miami Blues</I>), has the feel of Demme's <I>Something Wild</I> and <I>Married to the Mob</I>--which is to say its humor is dark and brightly colored at the same time. Cusack and Driver are utterly charming--as is the leading man's sister, Joan, who plays his secretary. (Ms. Cusack received an Oscar nomination for her next role, in <I>In & Out.) Alan Arkin is also very funny as Martin's psychiatrist. <I>--Jim Emerson</I>

Description

Here's the killer comedy hit that's loaded with outrageous fun! For hilarious comedy entertainment that's packed with action, GROSSE POINTE BLANK is a surefire knockout!

Mr. Cusack takes us for a wild ride in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. The man is simply trying to attend his High School reunion. But, he has a few issues to deal with while he's there...I'll let you find out for yourself! Get it at a good price - then enjoy it! Three stars!!

5 out of 5 stars Were you in high school in the 80s? .......2007-01-12

Hysterically funny perspective on transitioning from high school to adulthood. John Cusack delivers a terrific performance as does Minnie Driver and Joan Cusack.

5 out of 5 stars Grosse Pointe Blank.......2006-11-06

Sharp wit combined with excellent delivery make Grosse Pointe one of my favorite movies. It's always interesting when the protagonist is such an aweful person, yet seems like a hero. I'd recommend this movie to anyone who likes dry humor and has a tolerance for the depths of human monstrosity.

5 out of 5 stars Grosse Pointe Blank.......2006-11-04

Gotta be the funniest, wittiest, fastest comedy out there. I can't stand not to watch this one. I probably see it twice a year. It's that good. Every line is good, every scene is good. Never predictable, never dull or formulaic, despite being an outgrowth of Cusack's prestigious 1980's lexicon of light comedies.

4 out of 5 stars No shooting blanks, this hits the mark!.......2006-10-05

This was one of my favorite movies of the 90s. If you don't like the movie, definately get the soundtrack because it is by far one of the best compilations of underground 80s alternative I've ever heard, and it really carries the movie along well.

Bob Rueland (David Duchovny) and Grace Briggs (Minnie Driver) have very little in common. Granted, they both live in Chicago and they're both a bit lovelorn, but that's about it. Still, fate has something in mind for these two somewhat-depressed souls (a construction worker and budding artist, respectively), who've both recently had brushes with death--he's a recent widower, she's just recovered from a heart transplant--and are a little more serious than their friends and relatives. After a series of misbegotten blind dates and almost-meetings, though, these two finally get together, and find that they fit seamlessly with each other. Despite their differences, they have a lot in common--in fact, <I>quite</I> a lot. It seems that the heart that now beats inside Grace's chest once belonged to Bob's wife (Joely Richardson), who died in a car crash. Coincidence? We think not.

A gentle, pleasing romantic comedy, <I>Return to Me</I> marks the directorial debut of Bonnie Hunt, an acclaimed actress known most famously for her role as Renee Zellweger's sister in <I>Jerry Maguire</I>. A shining, happy bright spot in whatever role she's in, Hunt has also invested the film with her trademark brand of humor: dry but sincere, sarcastic but not caustic, and with a deep current of humanity and romance. In the midst of all the permutations that fate surrounds them with, Driver and Duchovny make a pleasantly low-key couple; the triumph of the film is that despite all the contrived angst, the romance is never overly saccharine. They provide a quiet center in a film that has a fair amount of chaos in it, particularly due to Driver's extended family of Irish <I>and</I> Italian relatives (which occasionally tips the film into cutesy territory) and most hilariously to Driver's best friend, played by director Hunt . As a harried mother with innumerable kids and a likable oaf of a husband (James Belushi), Hunt again steals scenes effortlessly; Belushi is a comic revelation, better than he's been in years. You'll have the pleasant memories of both of these couples--one falling in love, one together for years--with you a long while after seeing this film. <I>--Mark Englehart</I>

Description

Who knew that when he ordered the special, he d get the dish of his life? David Duchovny ('the X-Files ) and Minnie Driver (Good Will Hunting) ignite sparks in this warm-hearted winner (JeffCraig, 'sixty Second Preview ) about a widower and a waitress who meet and fall in love. Featuring an incredible all-star cast, this hilarious romantic comedy delivers a lot of laughs, tears and joysthat will make your spirits soar. It took a lot of cajoling to get Bob (Duchovny), a recently widowed architect, to go on a blind date at a quirky Irish-Italian eatery. Once there, he's smitten instantly not with his date but with the sharp-witted waitress, Grace (Driver). With unsolicitedhelp from Grace's matchmaking grandfather (Carroll O Connor), Bob asks her out. And as their relationship blossoms, everything seems to be going great, until an unbelievable truth is revealed one that could easily break both of their hearts for good.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, A Refreshing Movie for Everyone.......2007-05-25

I thought this movie was a delight even though it was one of those "that'll never happen" movies. The whole family can watch and enjoy it, so it was worth every penny. I plan to share it with friends.

4 out of 5 stars Nice couple-in-love or family flick.......2007-05-19

Enjoyable. Bought only because girlfriend likes to re-watch favorite movies regularly (and VHS copy finally broke). Otherwise, would have rented and been fine.

5 out of 5 stars Very romantic... Interestingly modern moral dilemma.......2007-05-12

I admit it I am a fan of both (actually several) stars of this movie. After Minnie Driver's new show on FX the Riches, reminded me how much I liked her, I got to remembering this film, then coincidentally it was showing on broadcast TV the other day when I came home from work and my wife was watching it and told me to order it, so I did, and we watched it with our youngest who also enjoyed it very much.

But this is a very sweet and touching tale with an interesting twist that is strong on a not too subtle metaphor.
Watch this with your sweetheart for a romantic night at home.

5 out of 5 stars CUTE AND TYPICAL OF SOME FAMILIES.......2007-05-02

THIS IS A CUTE MOVIE ,THOUGH SOME OF THE LANGUAGE IS NOT GOOD FOR CHILDREN,ONE OF MY FAVORITES.

4 out of 5 stars Very good romantic comedy.......2007-02-18

From an absurd plot - Chicago architect Duchovny falls in love with the much younger woman who (unknown to him) has received the transplanted heart of his dead wife - first time director Bonnie Hunt (who also has a good role in the movie) has crafted a very good romantic comedy. Minnie Driver, in particular, as the virginal Grace (this is a very catholic movie) has never been better as the object of Duchovny's chaste affection. The main question of the movie is how Duchovny will react when he learns about Grace's history - and how that will affect their relationship. The film is also a paean to a particular milieu - working class ethnic America, particularly the Italian, Polish and Irish groups that intersect in Chicago - that is fast disappearing as a result of assimilation.

After viewing <I>Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs</I>, Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote to Walt Disney about adapting his novel of an ape-man into a feature animated cartoon. Sixtysome years later, the tale is finally told with brilliant design work that looks unlike any previous animated film. The story is a natural for Disney since the themes of misunderstood central figures have been at the heart of its recent hits. Disney's <I>Tarzan</I> doesn't wander far from the familiar story of a shipwrecked baby who is brought up by apes in Africa. What gives the film its zing is its clever use of music (the songs are sung by Phil Collins himself rather than onscreen characters) and the remarkable animation. Deep Canvas, a 3-D technology, was developed for the film, creating a jungle that comes alive as Tarzan swings through the trees, often looking like a modern skateboarder racing down giant tree limbs. The usual foray of sidekicks, including a rambunctious ape voiced by Rosie O'Donnell, should keep the little ones aptly entertained. The two lead voices, Tony Goldwyn as Tarzan and Minnie Driver as Jane, are inspired choices. Their chemistry helps the story through the weakest points (the last third) and makes Tarzan's initial connection with all things human (including Jane) delicious entertainment. Disney still is not taking risks in its animated films, but as cookie-cutter entertainment, <I>Tarzan</I> makes a pretty good treat. (Ages 5 and up) <I>--Doug Thomas</I>

Description

Swing into action and adventure with Disney's original classic, TARZAN(R), packed with fun-filled bonus features and award-winning music such as the memorable "You'll Be In My Heart" and "Trashin' The Camp." Disney's magnificent animated adaptation of Edgar Rice Burrough's story of the ape man begins deep within the jungle when baby Tarzan is adopted by a family of gorillas. Even though he is shunned as a "hairless wonder" by their leader, Tarzan is accepted by the gorillas and raised as one of their own. Together with his wisecracking ape buddy Terk and neurotic elephant pal Tantor, Tarzan learns how to "surf" and swing through the trees and survive in the animal kingdom. His "Two Worlds" collide with the arrival of humans, forcing Tarzan to choose between a "civilized" life with the beautiful Jane and the life he knows and loves with his gorilla family. Filled with humor, heart, and hilarious fun, TARZAN is an unforgettable adventure you'll watch again and again.~~TARZAN(R) Owned by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. And Used by Permission. 1 out of 5 stars A schmaltzy, misguided version of the Tarzan legend........2006-12-22

Yes, it's Tarzan: the musical. Complete with baby Tarzan being sung to by his gorilla mom and.... (wait for it) Rosie Odonnel as his funny ape sidekick. If that isn't enough to disturb you, you must be a diehard Disney fan (and certainly not a Edgar Rice Burroughs fan).
There are glimpses of what the movie could have been. An action sequence where the adult Tarzan slays a leapard stands out. The background songs by Phil Collins work alright. When Tarzan meets Jane there is some charm in the situation of this man who has never seen a woman before. But against that we have to weigh the obligatory sappy family situation of Tarzan wanting acceptance from his ape father. A long introduction with cute, young Tarzan teasing elephants on a dare, and a musical number with Rosie Odonnel's character beating on tin pans in a jungle camp.
There are no lost golden cities, no Jagbalga the lion, or other great things from the Burrough's source material. It sort of puzzles me that some people have said this is pretty faithful to the material. It isn't. It's Tarzan for the kiddies, which I guess is what some people wanted and expected. But if it's adventure you want, you'd be better off with Disney's Atlantis or Dreamworks' Sinbad.

Although it's not as bold as Oscar darling <I>Chicago</I>, <I>The Phantom of the Opera</I> continues the resuscitation of the movie musical with a faithful adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's blockbuster stage musical.

Those who consider the stage musical shallow and overblown probably won't have their minds changed by the movie, and devotees will forever rue that the movie took the better part of two decades to develop, which prevented the casting of original principals Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman. Still, <I>The Phantom of the Opera</I> is a welcome exception to the long line of ill-conceived Broadway-to-movie travesties. <I>--David Horiuchi</I>

Description

Musical Drama based on Andrew Lloyd Webber's celebrated musical phenomenon. The Phantom of the Opera tells the story of a disfigured musical genius (Gerard Butler) who haunts the catacombs beneath the Paris Opera, waging a reign of terror over its occupants. When he falls fatally in love with the lovely Christine (Emmy Rossum), the Phantom devotes himself to creating a new star for the Opera, exerting a strange sense of control over the young soprano as he nurtures her extraordinary talents.
