A nightclub act with a handsome singer and an anarchic monkey-boy became a potent box-office force in the early 1950s. Although their wild live antics never translated intact to the screen, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis were an instant movie hit; they had two films in the box-office top ten of 1951, and another two in the top ten of 1952. Paramount repays this effort with its <I>Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis Collection, Volume One</I>, which gathers most of their early efforts at the studio.

Martin and Lewis were introduced in 1949's <I>My Friend Irma</I>, a big-screen version of a popular radio show. The boys are in support, but their high jinks were the hit of the movie, and their portion of screen time ballooned in <I>My Friend Irma Goes West</I>, which they basically take over. Both movies are enjoyable comedies, and especially in the sequel Lewis's lunatic style of mugging, vocal calisthenics, and physical shtick makes him look like an animal uncaged.

Not included in this set is their first starring vehicle, <I>At War with the Army</I>. The next six consecutive films are here, beginning with one of their best, 1951's <I>That's My Boy</I>. Jerry plays the athletically hopeless son of a famous football hero (Eddie Mayehoff, a funny man). It's a measure of how much Lewis had grabbed the public's imagination that Dino doesn't show up until the film is 20 minutes old. (Lewis later wrote that he arranged for "That's Amore" to be included in <I>The Caddy</I> to bolster Martin's popularity.) Also from 1951, <I>Sailor Beware</I> is a service comedy with some hilarious sequences--Lewis conducting a male chorus, for instance, or undergoing a slightly surreal medical exam--and the team still has a freshness despite the movie formula. Their timing together in the punchdrunk-boxer routine shows some of the chemistry they must have had onstage.

<I>Jumping Jacks</I> (1952) is the least of Martin & Lewis's service comedies, with Lewis as a showbiz performer who pretends to be in the military as a favor to Dean. <I>The Stooge</I>, same year, is one of their best teamings, this time with a touch of pathos along with the laughs: Martin is a self-centered singer who can't acknowledge that his hired stooge is the reason his act is boffo. Along with the backstage stuff, the movie demonstrates how skilled Lewis's singing was, even in a comic purpose.

1953's <I>Scared Stiff</I> is a warmed-over remake of the Bob Hope comedy <I>The Ghost Breakers</I>, and shows that the boys were overworked; the story is lame and the clowning feels more desperate (although Lewis has a few moments imitating co-star Carmen Miranda). In <I>The Caddy</I>, from the same year, Martin indulges his real-life passion for golf, and Lewis plays the neglected caddy. It's a return to form, borrowing a <I>Stooge</I> vibe, and boasts an odd framing story with the boys playing a nightclub act very much like Martin & Lewis.

Unless you're already a fan, your enthusiasm for this set will depend on your tolerance for Jerry Lewis and his manic, childlike dementia. Either you'll laugh, resist, or become fascinated at the naked, look-at-me neediness of his act. Dean Martin can be appreciated for the difficult job of playing straight man to this craziness (notice, too, how his singing voice comes into its own, from imitation Bing Crosby in the first couple of pictures to the familiar, relaxed style of vintage Dino). The DVD set provides no supporting features, but this is the first chapter of a hugely profitable and popular showbiz phenomenon. Just one more thing: "Who's your little whoozis? Who's your toitle dove?" <I>--Robert Horton</I>

I'll keep it short and sweet, just buy this collection. This duo does the lot like so many in their era, sing, dance, act, real entertainers.I enjoyed all the movies probably just as much as i enjoyed them as a child if not more.

4 out of 5 stars A long-overdue boxed set that whets the appetite for the next volume!.......2007-04-09

I have done a slow burn for years, simmering with frustration, waiting for Paramount to release the work of this major ...MAJOR comedy team! This is a straight-up, no-frills sampling of their early B&W films (and that's OK, so long as I have the films themselves ...I could care less about "special features" and/or supplements). I am encouraged by the fine re-mastering that has been done and hope that that quality will be maintained for the June release of Volume 2 (which I have already pre-ordered), most specifically restoring their later "Technicolor" works to their original Vista-Vision splendor. I am surprised that "At War With The Army" did not make it in this batch ...but guess there must be a copyright issue, as there have been many low-quality renditions available on VHS, Laserdisc & even DVD, for years (I assume that the 16mm print must have fallen into the public domain).

4 out of 5 stars Martin & Lewis Collection - Vol. 1.......2007-03-29

This is a "Saturday Afternoon" type movie to relax by and veg out on the couch with friends and a bowl of popcorn and laugh away the weekend! What more could you ask for.

Big bad Bob Mitchum: Seriously, is there anybody you'd rather watch in a movie? Mitchum had the cool looks, a dancer's sense of balance, and a thoroughly modern amusement about his own stardom. Somehow he made you invest in a movie, while simultaneously communicating his own smirky suspicions that the whole thing was a joke. Mitchum gets boxed in <I>Robert Mitchum: The Signature Collection</I>, a six-disc batch of random but rewarding Mitchum vehicles. Highlights are two noirish outings, and two prestigious auteur pictures that allowed Mitchum to play outside his usual job description. The one authentic noir is Otto Preminger's <I>Angel Face</I> (1952), with Mitchum as an incredibly passive hero bewitched by Jean Simmons' spoiled rich girl. True to its title, the film is utterly deadpan in tracking the downfall of Mitchum's easily-seduced male.

The quasi-noir is <I>Macao</I> (1952), a compulsively enjoyable piece of nonsense produced by the ever-meddling Howard Hughes. It's credited to director Josef von Sternberg, but it was largely reshot by Nicholas Ray (according to a Mitchum-Russell interview included on the disc, Mitchum wrote some of the new scenes). Doesn't matter; the combo of Mitchum and Jane Russell (re-teamed from the even kookier <I>His Kind of Woman</I>) is enough to carry this slice of backlot exotica. Both actors look skeptical about the material and amused by each other, and Russell gets to sing "One for My Baby."

<I>Home from the Hill</I> (1959) is an underappreciated change of pace for both Mitchum and director Vincente Minnelli. Mitchum, all authority as the super-manly patriarch of an East Texas family, supplies the brawn; Minnelli brings the same sensitivity to the emotional effects of color and movement that he brought to his musicals. Biggest surprise here is that two young-cub Georges, Peppard and Hamilton, are both very good in the male-ingénue roles. Another long film, Fred Zinnemann's <I>The Sundowners</I> (1960), is a gentle and wise account of a nomadic family of sheep-herders in Australia. Mitchum and Deborah Kerr bring a beautiful sense of mature romance to their relationship, and Zinnemann catches the beauty of the country. Plus, you learn how to shear a sheep.

The clinker in the set is Burt Kennedy's <I>The Good Guys and the Bad Guys</I>, a 1969 Western that can't decide whether it's sending up <I>High Noon</I> or playing it straight. Mitchum's the aging Marshall eased out of his job, George Kennedy is the equally aging varmint whose gang (led by whippersnapper David Carradine) plans a train robbery. One can imagine John Wayne as the Marshall and Mitchum as the rogue, but the movie would still fall flat. Finally, <I>The Yakuza</I> (1975) finds Mitchum in his weathered seventies form, and easily the best thing about Sydney Pollack's stately film. The Paul Schrader-Robert Towne script heads to Japan for some cultural lessons and much finger-severing. All in all, the set shows the range of a perpetually underestimated actor who never stopped being cool. <I>--Robert Horton</I>

5 out of 5 stars Robert Mitchum - The Signature Collection.......2007-05-09

This is another Warner Home Video boxset very well produced. Worth to own.

4 out of 5 stars subtitles?.......2007-03-19

What happened with the french subtitles on this item? Has Warner decided to remove the subtitles on all their titles now? What a disappointment!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Robert Mitchum collection.......2007-03-13

What can you say about this collection except that it is a keeper. Robert
Mitchum can walk thru a small, short movie like "Not As A Stranger" and he
makes it good. )Well, in that movie, Sinatra helped.) Regarding this box set, "The Sundownders" and "Home From The Hills" are unacclaimed masterpieces. "Macao" and "Angel Face" are classics. "The Yakuza" stands
out by itself. "The Good Guys And The Bad Guys" is a well-done western
with humor added.

5 out of 5 stars Robert Mitchum the signature collection.......2007-03-09

The collection has some of his best performances. Very enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best of the Warner boxsets.......2007-02-10

This is one of the best of the Warner "Signature Collection" boxsets, because it collects some of the most interesting (if not as well-known or popular) titles starring Robert Mitchum. For any "auteurist", this collection is essential, because it contains important works directed by Otto Preminger (ANGEL FACE), Josef von Sternberg (with an assist - actually, a studio-imposed take-over - by Nicholas Ray: MACAO), Vincente Minnelli (HOME FROM THE HILL). There's also THE SUNDOWNERS, possibly one of the most charming movies directed by Fred Zinnemann, THE YAKUZA, a deliberately provocative melodrama - one of the first to attempt to graft Asian genre conventions in an American framework - written by Paul and Leonard Schrader and directed by Sydney Pollack, and THE GOOD GUYS AND THE BAD GUYS, a journeyman Western directed by Burt Kennedy. The transfers are exemplary, and ANGEL FACE (one of the moodiest and most psychologically complex of film-noirs), MACAO (with some elaborately decorated sequences which show von Sternberg's skills at their best), HOME FROM THE HILL (perhaps the most operatic and ripely detailed of Minnelli's melodramas) and THE SUNDOWNERS (a relaxed and tender family chronicle, set - at that time - in the rarely seen Australian outback) make this package worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars Oh yeah...........2007-05-07

Warm fuzzies... I actually found Lavies little cow at a local anime store here in San Diego (Anime Manga in Mission Valley) and gave it go my girl.

She loved this series... I highly recommend it if you are into watching the type of winning personalities that know AND DO what is right based on their belief system.

A story of innocents lost and the freedom that is found when one discovers that they are no longer innocent but still appreciate that it was once a part of them.

This work is so good It just makes me happy to own it.

I have watched this 3 times since I purchased it. Very solid and the production quality is TOP notch... hard to find any better.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Greatest Anime Out There.......2007-02-15

Hi All,

You got to own or rent this series if you have not watch it. It is one of the best anime ever created. The story is great and the picture are very sharp and clear. Highly recommanded.

3 out of 5 stars Not a movie for a casual movie watcher!.......2007-01-12

I never watched animes, but finally decided to give them a try. I checked a few anime ratings and Last Exile was a winner in the most of them.
Well, if it is one of the best, then I am not a big fan of anime in general, and this movie in particular.
I still find it OK as a kids' cartoon, (and ships animation was good), but as an adult I was not much impressed. And minimalistic face animation just made me mad. :).

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful and poignant.......2006-11-25

Last Exile is aweome. Visually, thematically, character design, story craft. Word of warning, this is a slower paced anime. There are some moments that really drag. So, again if you're looking for some fast action thing, skip it. If you're a more methodical watcher, then get it. Hope you enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars An Anime Classic.......2006-11-16

I just finished this series the other night and got that blown away feeling you get after watching a really spectacular anime. I've been putting off watching it for a while because it didn't seem like something that would interest me but I have come to tell you, everyone should watch this series! It becomes quite apparent immediately that these guys had a big budget to work with and I don't think they could have spent it any better, the music, the animation, the cgi, and the story all compliment each other so well.

What really made me love this series the most though, grade A animation/cgi and music quality aside were the characters. There was not a single character that I did not find interesting. The story is good but it was my love for the characters that kept me coming back for more.

There are a few big questions left unanswered and I would have loved to learn more about all the characters, so they don't wrap everything up as much as a lot of viewers would have liked but personally it was sort of a moot point once everything was said and done. This is a definite must watch for anime fans.

The most interesting--and entertaining--aspect of this long, episodic World War II drama is that it marked the debut of one Justus E. McQueen, who subsequently took the name of the good ol' Arkansas boy he played in the movie: L.Q. Jones. He's only one of eight or nine Marine recruits who divide the screen time with commanding officer Van Heflin and James Whitmore as a lifer sergeant named Mac, "just Mac," who ramrods their squad and also delivers the movie's overbearing narration. Unfortunately, the narration is necessary to maintain continuity as the CinemaScope production galumphs its way from rounding up the melting-pot cast, to seeing them through basic training and sundry, mostly amatory misadventures in San Diego, to further training in New Zealand, and finally to baptism of fire on Guadalcanal.

Trouble is, among the recruits only McQueen/Jones (whose job is mostly comic relief) and Aldo Ray (as a brawling lumberjack who's never known family life) have any charisma or acting chops--and that's not forgetting Tab Hunter, whose matinee-idol status at the time does not speak well for the '50s. <I>Battle Cry</I> is also a cardinal example of Hollywood's penchant for buying big, lusty, profane bestsellers (by Leon Uris, in this case) and then euphemizing all the lustiness and profanity to appease the censors. Raoul Walsh, the poet laureate of lowdown gusto, does what he can in the circumstances, and as one of the first guys ever to direct a widescreen movie (1930's <I>The Big Trail</I>), he makes the battle scenes roar. <I>--Richard T. Jameson</I>

5 out of 5 stars ...GANG WAY!!!!!!.......HERE COMES THE MARINES..............2007-04-19

Excellent movie [DVD] about WW2 and the USMC....from the spartan Marine Boot Camp scenes and the dangerous amphibious landing/assaults against Japanese Marines throughout the Pacific war...good casting and on location scenery...looking again at Mainside at Camp Pendleton, Calif brought back fond memories of the physically brutal combat preparation for service in the Fleet Marine Force...Van Heflin portrayed a Marine Major who over identifies with his Marines, a rare breed of Officer, but pulls it off just the same...his Sgt/Major, the wiley James Whitmore cast perfectly as the combat/crusted 'old salt' [a 30 yr Marine] and good luck to Witmore for he was a genuine Marine Major while making this film in real life [kudos]...Tab Hunter can't act to save his life but there he was, must of had a good agent...moving onto his home/town girl, Mona Freeman, she's to be a teenage sweetheart but looks 30ish, if for a day, totally miscast, but the desireable and captivating, Dorothy Malone, is perfect as the loved/starved lonely wife [and makes herself available] who is every Marine's dream of the perfect weekend liberty to all Marines...WoW...she fits this role with abandon...mmm/mmm...then there's the burly lumber/jack molded into a fighting Marine, Aldo Ray, who has a penchant to excell as a military man..."The Squad"...lest I forget, all displayed the various camraderie that is always prevalent to the success of completing whatever mission that befalls them...one of the Squad is L.Q Jones "nervous in the service type" as the Company clown....there's one in every Marine Company...and the frosting on the cake is the bombastic Marine musical score provided by Hollywood's greatest musical director, the legendary, Max Steiner...in summation, having Raoul Walsh directing certainly adds to all concerned...folks, you get more than your monies worth getting this DVD, no doubt about it...Semper Fidelis...SSGT CHRIS SARNO-USMC FMF

4 out of 5 stars It's a war movie about people..........2006-07-10

War is not about bullets, it's about the people who catch them. Look, listen, learn and mature in your observations. This movie is a classic and a keeper. Can [and must] be watched many times to be fully digested. I am a Marine Corps veteran and a 100% disabled veteran. Now stuff that in your pipe and toke it.

5 out of 5 stars Be a Marine to be a real man.......2006-05-10

This movie had a great influence on me when I was young. When I first saw it I was in the age of trying to understand how to be a man. Of course it had to do with being tough. And of course it had to do with being able to fight. And of course it had to do with being able to get the girl.
This movie puts a group of young Marines through boot camp, has them wait and warm up for the war in Australia, and then sends them into combat. Their tough Sergeant Mac ( James Whitmore) who is the narrator of the story tells it all from beginning to end. Their Commanding office Highpockets Huxley(Van Heflin) leads them with a discipline and demandingness. One of the most impressive scenes of the movie has to do with their training march in which bruised and pained they hike for thirty or forty miles or more , and end up singing a song which resounds in my ears to this day."I'm just like a prairie flower, honey, honey, I'm just like a prairie flower, babe, babe. I'm just like a prairie flower, growing wilder by the hour. Honey, Oh baby , mine. Go to your left your right, your left. Go to your left your right. Your left'.
After the training they go into combat in the Pacific, those who have made it through, go home .
Years later from another continent in another country whose Army I have been a part of, though I was never really a combat soldier in it, I think how far even in mind and dream my own life and sense of manhood have come , from the image of the Gyrenes presented in this outstanding and highly enjoyable movie.

2 out of 5 stars forget about battle this is just "days of our lives " and not even as good.......2006-05-04

battle cry lurches foward at a snails pace and for a war movie very little fighting goes on,just long stares off to nothing and some romance. really with all the people involved in this it should be better. a waste of time!!!

They don't make 'em like <I>Branded</I> anymore. Actually, they hardly make 'em at all. Westerns, that is, with their big skies and scenic technicolor vistas, rousing musical scores, cattle and cowpokes, bad guys and prairie damsels, horses and wagons and dust. <I>Branded</I> has all of that, and a good story, decent acting, and superior writing to go with it. Alan Ladd plays Choya, a morally ambiguous loner (asked if he has any friends or kinfolk, he submits "my guns" and "my horse") and falsely-accused bandit who gets pulled into a "foolproof" million dollar scam that involves impersonating the long-lost son of a rich Texas cattle rancher. Needless to say, complications ensue. The villain (Robert Keith) starts getting antsy; the rancher, Lavery (Charles Bickford), and his wife turn out to be kind, decent folks; Choya takes an interest in his "sister" (Mona Freeman) that goes well beyond fraternal devotion; and his conscience kicks in, too. His ruse revealed, feeling guilt-ridden and seeking redemption, Choya spends the second half of the film on a quest to find the real missing Lavery heir (no easy task, as "Tonio" has been raised by a notorious Mexican outlaw)… and, in the end, to discover that what he really wants and needs is the family he's just betrayed. We all know how it will turn out, of course, but <I>Branded</I> is a good, wholesome family fare, and a lot of fun to boot. This DVD release contains no bonus features. <I>--Sam Graham</I>

Description

In BRANDED, Ladd plays Choya, a bandit who poses as the long-lost son of a wealthy Texas rancher. Shamed by the kindness of his new family and attracted to his lovely "sister," Choya vows to right the wrong he's done them. He rides out in search of the real missing heir...and into adventure as big as the western sky.

4 out of 5 stars A Strong Story And Alan Ladd's Performance Make This A First Rate Western.......2005-11-27

"All my life I've been a snake...lived by my wits...gotten what I've wanted any way I wanted it. Just lately, I've been wonderin'...if...just for once...I could do somethin' straight...do somethin' a little decent."

Choya (Alan Ladd) finds himself in the middle of a cruel con, and then finds he has a conscience. In Branded, a very good Western, Ladd plays a man who has always done what he wants, a loner at heart. "You got any friends?" an old man asks him. "My guns," Choya says. "Kinfolk?" "My horse."

Choya meets P. Jefferson Leffingwell (Robert Keith), who shows Choya how he can claim to be the lost son of the Lavery family, wealthy ranch owners. The son was kidnapped more than 20 years ago and has never been heard of since. Richard Lavery (Charles Bickford) renews each year a $100,000 reward in the hope of hearing something about his son. Choya and Leffingwell plan to split the reward, and with Choya accepted as the son, Leffingwell points out that in time he'll inherit the cattle ranch as well...and maybe to speed things up they'll even help Lavery into an early grave.

A tattooed birthmark and Choya's own cleverness do the trick. Lavery and his wife, fragile emotionally since the child was taken, and the Lavery's daughter, Ruth (Mona Freeman), accept Choya completely. Then something happens that now drives the movie into a new direction. He falls for Ruth and he is changed by the decency and openness of the Laverys. He decides to redeem himself by trying to find the real son and then disappearing. This sets off yet more unexpected developments.

Branded, in my view, is an excellent Western. There's great scenery, of course, and plenty of action. What gives this movie a dramatic wallop, however, is a strong story, the drama of a lost son, of twists that involve family feelings and the issue of what makes a real father. Not the least of its strengths is Alan Ladd's performance. Ladd may not have been much of an actor, but something about his on-screen personality brought out the image of a loner with a code of honor. That quality of silence combined with strength, of righteousness that could be aroused to do right, is what he brought to his best roles and which still make so many of his movies worth watching.

Bickford, as so often, plays a strong, decent man. Keith is first rate as an utterly amoral and greasy crook. And Joseph Calleia does an outstanding job as a man, like Bickford, who has to decide what loving a son really means.

The DVD color transfer is in great shape. There are no extras.

The theme of a long lost heir who returns and who may not be true is an old one It's always good for a strong story. If you like mysteries, I recommend Josephine Tey's book, Brat Farrar. Brat is the long lost son who reappears and who may not be who he claims. One of the complications is that Brat has a twin...who refuses to accept him.

4 out of 5 stars razor sharp like cactus.......2005-06-14

this is one of the best western i have seen.where alan ladd's performance is powerful, razor sharp with a whip lashing command in his voice. who went to rob the cattle baron charles bickford of their fortune as their long lost son -somewhere along the line he had a change of heart and brings home their real lost son who was removed from the family when he was only 5 yrs old and given to a mexican bandit across the river who raised him as his own.i think it is one of the must have movies.

Robert Mitchum was already a dab hand at film noir when he stepped into the delicious trap of <I>Angel Face</I>, Otto Preminger's 1952 addition to the genre. Here Mitchum plays an amazingly seducible guy who falls under the spell of spoiled rich girl Jean Simmons; a former race-car driver, he'd like to open his own sports-car garage, and her money would come in awfully handy. But she's got a few quirks to work out first, including her hostility for her stepmother, who doesn't stand a chance against this poker-faced vixen. True to its title, the film has an absolutely deadpan approach to this material, as Preminger's calm style recalls more the clinical courtroom proceedings of <I>Anatomy of a Murder</I> than the perverse lushness of <I>Laura</I>. Mitchum's in absolutely top form, and Jean Simmons has just right amount of intensity behind her porcelain beauty. The supporting cast is led by Herbert Marshall, as Simmons' father, a writer who's been sponging off his wife for years, and Leon Ames does a skillful turn as a crafty lawyer. The ending is as pre-ordained as can be, and the film moves toward its sinister conclusion without turning its head to explore other options. But that's why we love film noir. <I>--Robert Horton</I>

Description

Otto Preminger, who showed how to mix a beautiful woman with murder in the landmark Laura, directs this tale of a passion gone haywire. Frank's a regular guy with a steady girl and a dream of owning his own garage when he crosses paths with Diane. She wants him. Or does she want a fall guy to blame when Diane's stepmother plunges off a high cliff and leaves her fortune to Diane? Alibis, betrayals, courtroom thrills and the fire of a woman too dangerous to trust and too alluring to resist make Angel Face a film-noir classic.

4 out of 5 stars yes, a great film.......2007-05-16

After reading the comments by those here, I placed the film in my "Wish List" here on Amazon. Last night on Turner Classic Movies they showed this movie. It was really wonderful. I enjoyed the whole cast and I agree that Robert Mitchum and Jean Simmons were perfect in these roles. While her deadly deed plays out, she sits there emotionless with cold eyes and porcelain beauty. It was somewhat chilly. Simmons usually played the sweet wife or love roles in movies. I loved seeing her in a completely different role. I definitely recommend this movie. And what a surprise ending! OMG!

5 out of 5 stars Unappreciated Film Noir With A Difference.......2007-04-09

Angel Face was directed in 1952 by: Otto Preminger (Laura, 1944; Anatomy Of A Murder, 1959). Otto Preminger's `Laura' is now rightly regarded as one of great film noir masterpieces, however he made some less appreciated noirs like Fallen Angel (1945); Whirlpool (1949); Where The Sidewalk Ends (1950) and this film Angel Face. Upon it's release critics and public alike had seen perhaps far too many of this type of film hence the negative reviews. However I feel that this film is deserving of some rehabilitation. The theme is a familiar one of the Femme Fatale attempting to get some chump to assist in a murder. Angel Face is slightly different in that the Femme Fatale's (performed by Jean Simmons (Great Expectations, 1946; Hamlet, 1948; The Black Narcissus, 1947)) motivation is not the standard killing for money but for love. This makes it similar to the Ellen Berent character played by Gene Tierney in `Leave Her To Heaven' (1946, John M. Stahl). Generally in noir's guys kill for the girl and girls for the money. Robert Mitchum (Out Of The Past, 1947; Crossfire, 1947; Night Of The Hunter, 1955) gives a wonderful performance of a guy who is not so stupid as to get suck into her trap. He also has some great dialogue that one wish's they could always have at hand to deliver in those situations. Along with Humphrey Bogart and Burt Lancaster, Mitchum has to rank as one of the great noir actors. Cinematography was by Harry Stradling (A Streetcar Named Desire, 1951; Johnny Guitar, 1954; A Face In The Crowd, 1957)

This DVD comes with a wonderful audio commentary by Eddie Muller and is well worth a listen. In 1964 Jean-Luc Godard placed this film at no. 8 in his list of the greatest American films of the sound era. That alone should be good enough reason to investigate this film. It also has one of the great endings.

5 out of 5 stars "The richest guy in America presents the coolest guy in America".......2007-04-03

The title of this piece is a paraphrase of an observation offered by the man on the commentary track. This is an RKO picture, a Howard Hughes production--there are details about that statement that make the commentary track well worth hearing. It stars Robert Mitchum. I had never quite formulated that particular thought, but having heard it, I immediately realized it was perfectly true: Robert Mitchum WAS the coolest guy in America.

He was so cool that on screen he could act like a perfect chump from first frame to last and still seem cool. He was so cool that in an America where Lucy and Ricky could not share a bed, he could get busted for possession of marijuana, take all the heat and all the publicity without whimper or complaint, then go right on being as big a movie star as ever, and still the coolest guy in sight.

The previous Amazon reviews have been impressively sound in describing this picture. I have nothing to add beyond endorsing their high ratings. This is an unpretentious little noirish film. It boasts a fine cast from Jean Simmons in an uncharacteristic role, to Herbert Marshall in a characteristic one, to Kenneth Tobey and Mona Freeman in fine supporting performances. Otto Preminger was a wonderfully skilled (if wholly obnoxious) director. This movie works, satisfying in ways that some more famous films do not.

This DVD of "Angel Face" offers a good film, a good print and not much in the way of bells and whistles beyond a useful (for once) commentary. You won't go wrong with it.

Five appropriately cool stars.

5 out of 5 stars A face only a stepmother could hate (recommended).......2007-02-25

Ambulance driver Frank Jessup (Robert Mitchum) who aspires to own a high-performance car garage meets beautiful antisocial femme fatale Diane Tremayne (Jean Simons) in the house of questionable suicide-attempt victim Catherine Tremayne (Barbara O'Neil). Diane's relentless pursuit of Frank leads to spellbinding danger for anyone coming between her and her obsessive emotional attachments.

Mitchum is great in every film I've seen. In ANGEL FACE he plays the level-headed voice of reason battling an emotional vortex of compulsive admiration. Baring a strong resemblance to Audrey Hepburn, Jene Simmons has a slight stature and attractive girl-next-door appearance. This made me quite unprepared for the diabolical plotting and tormented conscience she so artfully portrayed. She crys; she lies; she is cold, calculated, and dangerous. With so many facets of her personality, you don't know what to expect when coming face to face with her. I first saw Simmons in ELMER GANTRY (1960) as a Bible thumping revivalist. Based on the title, her 1952 role is perhaps an appropriate prelude to that later role. You will think twice before trusting another beauty after ANGEL FACE -- highly recommended!

Movie quote: "You don't hate me, really. You couldn't hate anybody that loves you as much as I do."

5 out of 5 stars A great film noir classic.......2007-02-13

An excellent film. Very little known until now but, I would say, is one of the best films in its genre. Simmons is a perfect femme fatale here. It is also a film full of misogynist quips: "The only bad thing about America is that women get spoiled"; or "...even a woman can do it". Yeah, it's gonna be a lot of fun for your feminist friends.

It's a fine movie to watch, easy to follow plot, no complications, it's fast. goes to the point and it's a thriller; in only 90 minutes approx; it goes in a blink of an eye. I wish they made all like this one.

The end is one of a kind, don't miss it.

In this 1949 dramatization of Henry James's Washington Square, Olivia de Havilland is the plain but presentable spinster who lives with her domineering father (Ralph Richardson). What she lacks in looks she makes up for in wealth, and soon finds herself the object of much attention by Montgomery Clift. At the heart of this drama is the question of his possibly mercenary agenda. De Havilland does not seem to care one way or the other, but her father cannot believe any man would love her for any reason but her wealth.

This version does not stray too far from the novel. It is a masterpiece that reveals both suppressed anger within a family and the suppression of women in the 19th century. De Havilland, all simmering desire and controlled rage, won an Oscar for best actress, and Aaron Copland copped one for best score. It is no surprise that this handsome picture was also awarded Oscars for costume design and art direction. It was remade and updated with an oddly feminist twist in 1997under the novel's original title. --Rochelle O'Gorman

As soon as I got the alert that this film was availabe on DVD, I clicked on the link and bought it. This film is excellent and I hope viewers enjoy it as much as I did.
I first saw the movie at my Dad's suggestion. I thought it was going to be boring but have truly enjoyed it from the first time I saw it. It literally captivated me.
It's a wonderful movie. I can now tape over the VHS tape I keep this movie on.

5 out of 5 stars Rising Up the Staircase.......2007-05-31

I'd been meaning to see this amazing film for years and it is finally on DVD. What an amazing experience in film viewing!

At first I was overwhelmed by the period setting and Jamesian language but I quickly settled in and it all started making sense.

Rather than describe the plot, I just wanted to point out a few things about this amazing film- that means spoilers ahead.

Olivia de Haviland is amazing here as everyone knows. One of the most incredible things about this film is how she eventually takes it over completely. This is the story of one woman's individuation. In the beginning of the film she is awkward, homely and passive- almost a supporting character in the film but as the events unfold, slowly this victim becomes stronger and is the last one standing at the stunning climax.

Reviewers here have commented on how sad it is that de Haviland's character is alone at the end- it does not matter- this is an unflinching look at people, class and society as only Henry James could muster. de Haviland's Catherine IS homely- she does lack in the social graces but by the end she no longer cares. This is more than a tale of revenge. This the story of a woman taking control of her own life and refusing to be abused and victimized any longer.

In the emotionally crushing scene where all is lost and her lover (handsomely played by the beautiful Montgomery Clift) stands her up, we see Catherine, humiliated, dragging her bags up the stairs. The only man who had ever paid attention to her- that she would settle for, knowing all he wanted was her money- has refused her. Is there a sadder scene in film history? This is a woman without hope.

This is contrasted in the end by another scene centered around the same staircase. As sleezy Morris pounds on the door- his last chance at a meal ticket fading, we see Catherin anew. Glowing. Radiant. With a strong look in her eye- smiling her own secret smile. She effortlessly ascends the same staircase she trudged up before. A victim no longer. An abused child no longer. She is now a fully actuated woman rising up into her own dignity and self-worth.

The rush of exhileration in this scene is one of cinema's great joys and will leave you cheering.

As the plot of this popular fantasy accelerates, small actions are revealed to have far-reaching repercussions, as a falling stone can trigger an avalanche. The new Empress of Anatory discovers that the fathers of Lavie and Claus were killed trying to deliver a message that would have ended the war between her country and Disith. A newly forged alliance between Anatory and Disith against the Guild and its bizarre ruler, Maestro Delphine, draws the characters into the struggle. Claus, Lavie, Tatiana, Dio, Alex, et al. join in the search for the Exile, the Guild's gargantuan flying base, within the vast storm system of the Grand Stream. Al and her powers over the Mysterion may hold the key to the conflict. The filmmakers introduce some interesting, original touches, including using sound to find the Exile. After a slow beginning, <I>Last Exile</I> is finally taking off. (Rated 13 and older: violence, alcohol use) <I>--Charles Solomon</I>

4 out of 5 stars The plot thickens........2004-12-27

Last Exile starts to pick up as the series begins to form a clearer direction as it passes it's halfway point and the characters each prepare in their own way to face Queen Delphine and her forces.

Sophia's secret identity, revealed in the last volume, becomes useful on both political and personal scales as she takes her place as a powerful diplomatic figure - finally discovering the Guild's true intentions - and is able to pass on to Claus and Lavie information about the reason their fathers died.

The character who really shines in this volume, however, is Lord Dio Eraclea. Although we have had our suspicions, it is now that we finally get a fairly clear picture of his true nature and it is finally established whether he is a spy or a good-intentioned deserter as we see a different, very human side of him behind the bravado that he had not previously shown anyone. We get a further idea of what the Silvana is going to be dealing with in his sister Delphine through his point of view, building up tension for when the Silvana will finally confront her.

All in all, an excellent lead-in to the tense volume that follows.

5 out of 5 stars The most exciting DVD yet.......2004-09-01

"Grand Stream," Volume 5 (of 6) contains some of the most exciting episodes of the series. All the plots are finally coming together: old characters reappear, former enemies set aside their differences, and all to work to defeat the "malicious queen" Delphine and capture Exile.

Fans of Dio and Sophia will be particularly pleased by Volume 5, as they are given center stage. In fact, Ep. 18 is called "Promotion Sophia." As you know, when a pawn reaches the end of the board, it is "promoted" to Queen--in Sophia's case, Empress. The whole coronation sequence is simply GORGEOUS.

Unfortunately, there isn't much in terms of the DVD's "extra" material. There's a textless opening, a character gallery, and the obligatory Geneon previews. C'est tout. Oh well, I'm still glad I bought the DVD, and I can't wait for the next installment ("Queen Delphine").

The battle of the Dragon's Fangs was not the victory it appeared to be at the end of episode 12 (<I>Last Exile: Discovered Attack</I>): when Tatiana's nerve fails during the fray, she crashes in the desert with Claus. While he restores their damaged Vanship, Lavie recalls how she and Claus have spent their lives together, hoping to match the heroic deeds of their fathers by crossing the mysterious Grand Stream. Having waited so long to develop the characters and clarify the plot, the filmmakers have a lot of catching up to do. These episodes are crowded with revelations, declarations, and crises that will take some time to sort out. As personal and planetary crises grow more serious, three powerful but unexplained entities remain mortal threats: the Grand Stream, Exile, and the sinister Maestro Delphine. Finally, the story of <I>Last Exile</I> is becoming as interesting as the artwork. (Rated 13 and older: violence, minor profanity) <I>--Charles Solomon</I>

4 out of 5 stars Revealations........2005-08-03

This volume of Last Exile covers alot of ground.

First off, Tatiana's falling out with Alister means that she has to spend vanship time with Claus, whom she rather unfairly can't stand. Their relationship starts to improve as they're downed and have to spend considerable time together, during which she finds out what a great guy he is.

Claus' general wonderfulness might be good for Tatiana, but it isn't so great for poor Mullin, who more-or-less gracefully gives up his crush on Lavie when he realizes that Claus will always come first with her; nevertheless remaining someone very close to her heart and her very dear friend.

Finally, we get two surprising revealations - one about Sophia, who is more than she appears to be, and another about a surprising connection Alex has with Claus and Lavie that Dio's pursuit of life, liberty and Immelman inadvertently uncovers.

What's so great is how subtly everything is presented. Mullin never says a word about what he's going through, but it's plain from his expression and body language. There's also starting to be a slow shift in Dio and Luciola's function in the story. They don't have much screentime this volume, but what they do have is telling as we're quietly reminded that Delphine is still looking for them and it isn't going to be pleasant if she finds them.

All in all, another good entry.

5 out of 5 stars wow!.......2004-07-27

i could not belive how unbelivibly good this show is! when i fist watched last exile all i could say was wow! and it hasn't disapointed me yet. last exile has some of the best animation i've ever seen! and the whole plot is amazing! a real masterpiece. this show is one that almost anyone could enjoy, especialy if you are a fan of war flicks of any kind. when i finished watching V4 breakthrough all i could think was "more, i must have more!" and i can't wait for V5 to come out. i think i have to take a little time to mention the characters who are all so wonderfully perfect in personaliy and aimimation that i can truthfully say that GONZO has realy outdone itself.

3 out of 5 stars Went from Great to Worse.......2004-06-19

I am a huge Last Exile fan. However, the series went downhill from here. The reason I liked Last Exile was because it was different from all the other animes. The computer-generated graphics actually make the battle scenes interesting, instead of some stupid DBZ stunt. Another thing I liked about it was there were no "bizarre love triangles" up until this point. Now it seems as though every character likes another character and that character likes everyone else...and does a few along the way. This volume, however, isn't a complete failure. The beginning of the volume starts out great, and you will watch the first episodes more than once if you buy this DVD, guaranteed. But the new "bizarre love triangle" just made everything too complicated near the end. There are enough plot twists in here that if you didn't watch this DVD, you would be missing a lot in the rest of the volumes. I recommend that you buy it, it just won't be as enjoyable as the first three.

5 out of 5 stars This Series Just Keeps On Getting Better And Better!!!.......2004-06-16

Ok I have so far purchased First Move, Positional Play, Discovered Attack, and now Breakthrough. This series doesn't stop wit the smart moves they make. All the character are lovable and very interesting. This series has 4 episodes that are everything.....

ISOLATED PAWN: Claus and Tatiana are thrown together to fly a vanship to defend the Silvana from a MASSIVE attack orchestrated by Anatoray and Tatiana begins to confide in Claus when the two make an emergency landing. Tatiana's character gets much character development.

ETUDE LAVIE: A flashback when Claus and Lavie still has a family. Learn much about their past. This is a somewhat sad episode........

FAIRY CHESS: All I can say is wow. This episode is like a drama show like somethin from MTV or 90210. I was shocked at the end of this episode what Sophia does to one of the main characters. This is my favorite episode up to this point!

BREAKTHROUGH: Action packed finally of the dvd where a character dies and ya cry. I guarantee you will cry. Very sad stuff here and i ain't saying nothing more about this episode.

So in the end, I recommend this dvd and the whole series to everyone out there! Please get this show cuz it is better than any anime I have ever seen besides "Grave of the Fireflies".....
This point 4th is where the real meat of the story picks up so please support this show and get it!!!

5 out of 5 stars Breaking through the ordinary.......2004-04-30

LastEXILE: Breakthrough is definitely the true breaking point of the series, although the auction for Exile and the race in the third DVD began setting the scene up. Breakthrough includes episodes 13 through 16.

13. ISOLATED PAWN - Claus and Tatiana are left alone on a desert wasteland, and struggle to find the survivors of the Sylvana.

14. ETUDE LAVIE - Basically a complete flashback of Claus and Lavie's pasts. Includes the beautiful song 'Skywriting.'

15. FAIRY CHESS - Claus and Tatiana return to the Sylvana, although the situation there has changed...

16. BREAKTHROUGH - The war between Dysis and Anatore reaches a climax, and the Guild begins to play a more major role.

I can only recommend this amazing DVD to all of you. If you've been following the series up to now, you will not be disappointed!
