Despite the inevitable law of diminishing returns, <I>The Matrix Revolutions</I> is quite satisfying as an adrenalized action epic, marking yet another milestone in the exponential evolution of computer-generated special effects. That may not be enough to satisfy hardcore <I>Matrix</I> fans who turned the Wachowski Brothers' hacker mythology into a quasi-religious pop-cultural phenomenon, but there's no denying that the trilogy goes out with a cosmic bang instead of the whimper that many expected. Picking up precisely where <I>The Matrix Reloaded</I> left off, this 130-minute finale finds Neo (Keanu Reeves) at a virtual junction, defending the besieged human enclave of Zion by confronting the attacking machines on their home turf, while humans combat swarms of tentacled mechanical sentinels as Zion's fate lies in the balance. It all amounts to a blaze of CGI glory, devoid of all but the shallowest emotions, and so full of metaphysical hokum that the trilogy's detractors can gloat with I-told-you-so sarcasm. And yet, <I>Revolutions</I> still succeeds as a slick, exciting hybrid of cinema and video game, operating by its own internal logic with enough forward momentum to make the whole trilogy seem like a thrilling, magnificent dream. <I>-- Jeff Shannon</I>

4 out of 5 stars Jesus analogy aside, some brave choices here.......2007-05-17

You know, it's almost impossible to do a trilogy franchise and please fans of the original with episodes 2 and 3. When Reloaded came out, I listened to the masses who moaned and rolled their eyes that no one should bother and to just accept the original Matrix as the classic that it is, essentially pretending that they don't exist. When will I learn my lesson and go see for myself instead of writing things off like that?! I did the same thing with The Two Towers, which everyone told me I would hate. Well excuse me, I loved it. Every last minute. No, it wasn't Fellowship and it wasn't supposed to be, it was different and progressed the story. I feel the same way about Reloaded and Revolutions; it's essentially one enormous story (and yes, it's easy to see the Jesus and King Arthur analogies here) told in three very different films. It would be cowardice and unoriginal to duplicate the first film just to play it safe and I commend the W brothers for staying true to their vision, however and whenever that came about. I won't spoil any plot points here but there are some surprises because American audiences are accustomed to certain things and a few times this film zigs when you expect it to zag. The battle sequences at Zion are a bit long but they're well done, and while I hear a lot of griping about how they ripped off Aliens with their technology didn't we all think it was damn cool at the time and wish we'd seen it do more? I did. So here you get to see that in an insane standoff to save the city.

Reloaded and Revolutions are far more akin to one another than the original Matrix is to either and from what I hear from people in the industry, the W bros didn't know they would be doing 3 films initially so the Matrix was conceived and produced as a standalone project and then the trilogy grew out of the popularity. Now, I personally don't think that detracts from anything. Whether it was all conceived at the outset or not, they planted some very interesting seeds in The Matrix and then helped them to sprout in Reloaded and Revolutions. I liked the philosophy and ideologies lobbed out there, whether I agreed with it all or not. This franchise has balls. Once in a while I felt like the fight scenes or action got to be a bit lengthy but at the same time there was such astounding beauty within each segment it kept me hooked into it and interested.

And as for the absolute ending, all I can say is that if you need a neat and tidy Hollywood ending in order to feel satisfied (which is very common and understandable) then this will leave you frustrated or upset. I also see a corrolation between people's own attitudes about life, death and rebirth reflected in their reactions to this trilogy, though sometimes on an entirely subconscious level. I just wish I had seen them all in the theater rather than allowing myself to be swayed by the massive tidal wave of negativity I heard about the last two installments. I now own them all and I'd love to watch them in sequence sometime soon, like Lord of the Rings or the original Star Wars trilogy, to see how that brings it all together as well.

And for the love of God, let's lay off of Keanu for once! Every actor has their niche, even Jack Nicholson. Would you want to see Jack as King Lear? Probably not. I hated Keanu in Much Ado because it's not his element, but as Neo he is the perfect choice.

If you open yourself to an intense experience and let go of any expectation of seeing another Matrix, you might enjoy this film as much as I did. Again, it might help to watch even 2 and 3 together since they do have such a similar energy and really build on one another. I think this is powerful stuff that would make for some really interesting discussions with a movie group.

3 out of 5 stars Lacks originality and style of acts I & II.......2007-02-28

Revolutions was not a great climax to the Matrix trilogy. The first was sensational. It was stylistic, original, and thought provoking. The first time I watched it I was captivated the entire time and wanted more. Many people did not think much of Reloaded, but I personally loved it. It was not mind-bending like the first, but that wasn't its purpose. The Matrix asked the questions; Reloaded set the stage for a final resolution. I felt it did so with continued originality and style. The fight sequences were artistic and compelling. I don't know how Matrix fans could not have loved watching the result of Neo realizing the potential of his abilities. I can't help overusing the word, but the movie just overflowed with style. The architect scene was odd, but it had good dialogue and was a pretty fun change of direction.

Revolutions almost completely dropped all of those aspects that I enjoyed about the first two. Instead of original, it was filled with cliche. Most of the Zion battle seemed like it could have been made by cutting and pasting from dozens of war/action films. Other than the visual aspect, there was nothing original about the entire Zion portion of the movie. Amaze some people by how well you can pilot a ship. Can an unlikely character somehow find it in him to overcome all when nearly all hope is lost? I need not mention the overdone yet cliche Neo/Trinity scene. The Merovingian fight scenes were fun but basically a hybrid of the security guard fight from I and the medieval weapons one from II.

On the whole, I liked the culmination of the Neo storyline. The machine city, along with the train station, was one of the few aspects of the film that was original and interesting. On a fairly superficial note, I just did not enjoy the fight scenes with Smith. The stylistic choreography was replaced with two guys flying all over the place. Even more superficially, I always loved Smith's wisea-- lines from the previous films, but we didn't really get any more of those. Again, I thought the concept of the Neo storyline was good. It just felt like it was delivered a little less thoughtfully, almost as though that plot was the last to be worked out before some sort of deadline. The Oracle's eyes were thrown in as being important to get then barely played any part in the story. The Merovingian didn't have anything interesting to add this time around. Generally it just felt like the actual plot of Revolutions was thrown together somewhat hastily.

The movie wasn't terrible, it was just quite mediocre. Visually it had many great moments including the batman bouncers at the coat check, much of the Zion battle, and the Source. However, it mostly lacked originality and didn't fit together that well. As the final act, Revolutions could have been the culmination of an exciting, philosophical, and compelling trilogy. Instead it was just the last movie.

4 out of 5 stars Revolutions.......2007-02-20

I waited a long time to see this because everyone I know didn't like it, as it relates to the first two films. When I finally gave in, I wasn't expecting much (my sure fire method of getting more out of a film), so I appreciated it more than I expected...plus Jada Pickett-Smith is hot. However, the ending needed a little more resolution, considering the monumental storyline.

Lower your expectations, have a few beers, and watch all three films in a row.

<I>Irreversible</I> begins with the closing credits running backwards before the film begins (or ends) with Marcus (Vincent Cassell) and Pierre (Albert Dupontel) being escorted out of a gay S&M club by the cops, Marcus with his arm broken and Pierre in handcuffs. The "story" proceeds to unwind in a series of single-take scenes that unfold <I>Memento</I>-style, with each scene giving more context to what we have seen previously. Each scenario depicts actions, dialogue, incident, behavior, and circumstances that the lead characters might have wished didn't happen, ranging from extreme violence through awkward social situations to mild embarrassment. The central character (and possible dreamer of this whole what-if story) emerges as Alex (Monica Bellucci), who suffers the worst in a very hard-to-watch rape sequence in an underpass. Semi-improvised, the scenes all have attack and power as themes, with later/earlier conversational sequences that suggest life isn't all sexual assaults in the dark, showing equal cinematic imagination with the horrors. Arguably, this is not a film most would subject themselves to twice, but it is something that stays in the mind for days after viewing, sparking far more ideas and emotions than most wallow-in-nastiness pictures. <I>--Kim Newman</I>

Product Description

Alex and Marcus are a couple whose story is told over the course of a fateful evening in a series of long takes. An emotional odyssey that unspools in reverse from gut-wrenching violence to sweetly observed moments of sublime tenderness.

    "Irreversible" is like no other.
I was lucky enough to originally see this film on a large cinema screen as part of the "French Film Festival" in the year of it's original release.
I didn't know much about it, other than the rumour that it contained a fairly vicious rape scene. That it did.
Five minutes in, it has some other stuff as well that took me completely by surprise and jolted me to attention. I've seen my share of sick stuff, but this was something totally new.
"Irreversible" is incredibly brutal and nasty, with some amazing performances from the cast involved.
Definately not for the kiddies, or even some adults. In fact, even most adults. It's a tough watch.

4 out of 5 stars Will The Beauty Save The World?,.......2007-04-05

*** This comment may contain spoilers ***

The plot of the film is simple: a woman (Monica Belucci) is brutally raped by a stranger; and her boyfriend (Vincent Cassel) and ex-boyfriend (Albert Dupontel) who are best friends set out for revenge. What is crucial, the story is told backward.

The most obvious success for this film is the directing by Noe. He has crafted a nightmare that is both original and horrifying. If the inferno exists somewhere, one of its circles definitely looks like the "The Rectum" bar, and the other - like the underpass where Alex (Monica Belucci) was brutally sodomized and beaten for long nine minutes that seemed as an eternity. The pulsing score that accompanies the film contains, for the first sixty minutes, a constant 27-hertz tone specifically designed by Noé to cause nausea in the audience. It felt like someone was constantly drilling the holes in my head. The director creates the scenes of such pain and violence that makes "Natural Born Killers" look and feel like a puppet show. One of these is a scene where a man gets his head bashed in with a fire extinguisher with the camera never turned away and the sound is amplified.

The movie shocks you, and then it goes and shocks you even more when there is no violence on the screen. I broke in tears during the bedroom scene - so much love, tenderness and desire Monica and Vincent had for each other. They did not know what was ahead; I did.

In the end, one cannot help questioning the very fragile, illusory nature of happiness, how easy it is to destroy everything. Is it a blessing or curse not to know what lies ahead and not be able to change the future?

Dostoevsky said almost hundred and fifty years ago that the Beauty will save the world. I don't know. Not this world. Not during my time.

"Irreversible" is a shocking anti-violence film; one has to decide whether he or she wants to see it. I personally think it is a must see but I would not be surprised if a lot of viewers refuse.

3 out of 5 stars Tough to Watch.......2007-03-12

Good story, albeit told backwards, two extremely violent scenes, one very cool, one (the rape scene) not exactly a pleasant view, and dizzying and sometimes nonsensical camera work, make for an interesting movie. Not great, but interesting.

With dizzying cinematic tricks and astonishing performances, Francis Coppola's 1992 version of the oft-filmed Dracula story is one of the most exuberant, extravagant films of the 1990s. Gary Oldman and Winona Ryder, as the Count and Mina Murray, are quite a pair of star-crossed lovers. She's betrothed to another man; he can't kick the habit of feeding off the living. Anthony Hopkins plays Van Helsing, the vampire slayer, with tongue firmly in cheek. Tom Waits is great fun as Renfield, the hapless slave of Dracula who craves the blood of insects and cats. Sadie Frost is a sexy Lucy Westenra. And poor Keanu Reeves, as Jonathan Harker, has the misfortune to be seduced by Dracula's three half-naked wives. There's a little bit of everything in this version of Dracula: gore, high-speed horseback chases, passion, and longing.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Lush and decadent!.......2007-06-02

Purists might hate this version of Dracula for the liberties it takes but I loved it. Gary Oldman's performance as Dracula was simply amazing...he brings romance to the role, a dark knight who is depicted more as a victim of fate than a true evil creature, and his love for Mina [whom he feels is the reincarnation of his long-dead wife] is altogether real and credible. Anthony Hopkins brings a certain level of zealousness to the role of Van Helsing, but I can't say Iwas very impressed by Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder's performances. Firstly there was no chemistry between them though they were supposed to be engaged, and similarly Winona's Mina seemed like a cold fish to me, especially in her love scenes with the Count [the actress who played Lucy on the other hand was pretty scintillating].But despite some of the flawed performances, the movie on the whole was beautifully filmed. The cinematography was lush and evoked decadent images, especially the seduction scenes, in particular Keanu's seduction by the three wives of Dracula, and also Lucy's seduction and attack by Dracula. The costumes are sumptuous to look at. The use of the color red throughout the movie [Lucy's dress, the scene where Dracula stalks Mina] is vivid and reminds us of the lust for blood. The score is haunting and serves to keep viewers' at the edge of their seats as the story unfolds. Overall, this is one of the best contemporary adaptations of Dracula, and a classic.

    4 out of 5 stars 95% Excellence; 5% Missed Opportunities.......2007-05-15

The most grandiose retelling of the legendary story, and one that casts one of the world's most famous tales of horror as a love story (although certainly a very dark love story), this 1992 version of Dracula features Gary Oldman turning in probably the greatest portrayal of the Count ever.

Everything in this huge, haunting tale centers around the love story between Dracula (tied in much closer here than in most depictions to his supposed real-life counterpart, Vlad The Impaler) and Mina, the reincarnation of his centuries-ago love, Elisabeta. Beginning with the origin of Dracula's vampirism following Elisabeta's death, the story then flashes forward to late-1800s Transylvania and Johnathan Harker's famous trip to the Count's ancient castle. Having dwelled in and terrorized Transylvania for centuries now, the Prince Of Darkness comes by chance upon Harker's locket, in which is a small picture of Mina, the exact image of Dracula's deceased wife. The passion reawakened in the lord of the vampires, he journeys to London and confirms that Mina and Elisabeta are one and the same. From there the vampire Dracula preys on inhabitants of the city even as the mortal and emotional side of the beast is reawakened by re-discovery of his true love.

On a technical scale, "Bram Stoker's Dracula" is brilliant, with masterful cinematography, an outstanding dark score by Wojciech Kilar, chilling shadow imagery and extraordinary special effects. The romantic angle is also a total success. Where the movie does run into some trouble is here: despite the intensified focus on Dracula and Mina, the Dracula tale is still very much an ensemble piece, and some of the other characters just aren't captured as well as I wished they had been in a movie that was otherwise so great. It's not the performances per se, it's just that things didn't come together for some of the other characters. Dr. Van Helsing (although very well played by the always impressive Anthony Hopkins) comes off cold, arrogant, and curiously unconcerned for the people he's supposedly trying to protect - a far cry from the compassionate, courageous and emminently likable versions of the doctor seen in movies like "Horror Of Dracula" (with Peter Cushing as Van Helsing). I think that they may have been thinking that in presenting some sympathetic aspects to the otherwise evil Dracula, they had to counterbalance it by 'darkening' Van Helsing a bit. I don't think it really worked. Add to this a somewhat wishy-washy Harker and a Mina who wasn't nearly as developed as her pivotal role would have seemed to dictate, and it detracts a bit from the whole. The 'lesser' players - Lucy, her three suitors, and the insane Renfield, were all better done in my opinion. Dracula himself is done to perfection. In spite of the occasional problems with some of the characters, "Bram Stoker's Dracula" keeps coming on strong all the way through - until, tragically, the last five minutes or so. With a kind of anti-climatic (though far from terrible) ending to what was a vibrant and dramatic movie, plus the difficulties with some of the characters, we're left with a great show but one that fell a bit short of the mark it could have hit.

Still highly recommended; the weaker parts wouldn't have been so noticeable if 95% of the movie wasn't so awesome. A very, very good version of the Dracula tale despite a few chinks in the armor.

5 out of 5 stars extremely good movie with a few minor flaws.......2007-05-15

A good film that for me sums up alot of what was good about early 1990s cinema. Oldman as dracula, Hopkins as van hellsing, Richard E Grant as Dr Seward, Carey Elwes as Arthur Holmwood and country legend Tom Waits as renfield make this film an extremely well acted peice. It is an alternative take on the book, much like the last temptation of christ was a different take on the life of christ. The bones of the story are there but some characters are more realistic and different. Van helsing is a pompus , lecherous alchoholic with a good heart, Seward is addicted to morphine and dracula was actually a victim of life but nevertheless a creature of darkness.
This movies best feature was that it showed vampires in an extremely unique and interesting way, they are not just normal guys with fangs and charisma like in the christopher lee draculas, but are powerfull creatures of the night, capable of flight, shape changing, mind manipulation and telekinesis. all together a fantastic romp.

5 out of 5 stars Fact, Fiction and My Inspiration!.......2007-05-11

1462, Transylvania, Vlad the Impaler leaves his wife to fight the Turks. Out of malice, The Turks send her a letter telling her that her husband is dead. She is so distraught over his death and terrified at being captured that she throws herself from the castle turrets. When Vlad returns, he is told that his wife may not enter the Kingdom of Heaven as she has killed herself, which is a mortal sin. Vlad immediately renounces God and then he himself is condemned.

400 years later, Jonathon Harker leaves London and his fiancée Mina to travel to Transylvania. He has been assigned to help Count Dracula acquire property in England. Jonathon may never return...

This film, despite its flaws, will always hold a place in my heart as it inspired me to write my novel, Vrolok. I have always loved horror movies so when I heard that Francis Ford Coppola was making a new Dracula film, I could not wait to see it. I remember eagerly anticipating the announcement of who was to play Dracula, and when I found out that it was Gary Oldman, I was not happy! The only thing I had seen him in was JFK, and I was not very impressed (I was too young to have appreciated Sid and Nancy). However, I still decided it was worth going to the cinema to see the movie as Keanu Reeves, Cary Elwes and Bill Campbell were also in it. From the moment Gary Oldman appears on screen, he captivates his audience. His performance is camp, overdone, and at times preposterous, yet it is still somehow seductive, mesmerizing, and sublime. (Bram Stoker would have been proud!). He even utters the line "The children of the night. What sweet music they make" with a thick Romanian accent and gets away with it. I saw this film when I was fifteen and was immediately converted into a life long Gary Oldman fan.

As previously stated, and despite Oldman's performance, the film does have its flaws. Keanu Reeves is about as wooden as a stake and the rest of the cast seem to, just like Gary Oldman, overdo the accents and this is a strategy that doesn't quite work for the rest of the cast. In addition, Sadie Frost and Wynona Ryder running around in the rain in see-through outfits is clichéd and slightly annoying (I am sure most boys who see this film love that bit). Apart from Oldman's performance, there is one other thing that has to be commended - the soundtrack - both Wojciech Kilar's score and Annie Lennox's theme are dark, chilling, and poignant.

All in all a great movie - it inspired me to write a book that may or may not make me a million but will always be something that I am proud to have completed.

5 out of 5 stars Come on you bunch of Siskels!.......2007-04-11

Ok you bunch of no taste bums! lol! First, the only word I could have ever associated with Dracula before I watched this movie was TACKY. The big capes, the really bad accents and the bats on a string, were all so overtly horrid, I could never bear to watch those movies. This movie was a dark love story with superb special effects and a truly superior performance by Gary Oldman as Dracula. I swear, I think that man can be anyone! I grant you, Keanu did have a poor grasp of the Brittish accent and Winona struggled a bit in the passion area, but their performances were above adequate and Winona was a perfect straight man to Oldman's lavish Dracula performance. Anyone who could insinuate that Anthony hopkins was even capable of a bad performance, should be strung up in the town square and tickled mercilessly until unconscious! lol!!

All the world is a critic and for my money, as long as I enjoyed a movie, the whys and wherefores aren't really that important. Maybe this kind of movie is not your cup of tea. If not, don't ruin it for the rest of us by your crude and mellow dramatic reviews. Take my advice, buy this movie! If you want to see the real love story behind the Dracula myth, without all the "bluck bluck, I come to bite your neck" stuff, then this movie is for you. If you want "Blade" in the 1800's, this is probably not for you.

Considering the lofty expectations that preceded it, <I>The Matrix Reloaded</I> triumphs where most sequels fail. It would be impossible to match the fresh audacity that made <I>The Matrix</I> a global phenomenon in 1999, but in continuing the exploits of rebellious Neo (Keanu Reeves), Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) as they struggle to save the human sanctuary of Zion from invading machines, the codirecting Wachowski brothers have their priorities well in order. They offer the obligatory bigger and better highlights (including the impressive "Burly Brawl" and freeway chase sequences) while remaining focused on cleverly plotting the middle of a brain-teasing trilogy that ends with <I>The Matrix Revolutions</I>. The metaphysical underpinnings can be dismissed or scrutinized, and choosing the latter course (this is, after all, an epic about choice and free will) leads to astonishing repercussions that made <I>Reloaded</I> an explosive hit with critics <I>and</I> hardcore fans alike. As the centerpiece of a multimedia franchise, this dynamic sequel ends with a cliffhanger that virtually guarantees a mind-blowing conclusion. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

2 out of 5 stars Cool Action but Silly and Pretentious.......2007-05-19

The first MATRIX film was interesting but I felt they held too much info back for too long. By the time you understood the story, the movie was over.

By the second movie, THE MATRIX RELOADED, the filmmakers got caught up in their own pretentious premise. The dialogue just plays flat and weird. Keanu Reeves looks either deep or...blank. Couldn't tell which most of the time. The truly-odd "Rave Scene" was so primitive and even bestial that I wondered why humans needed to survive at all. Maybe the machines were on to something to exterminate such rampant barbarism and partying.

The action scenes were very cool and the special effects extremely interesting. I'm sure the filmmakers turned to talented effects people to shoot those scenes.

If only they had turned to talented sci-fi writers to flesh out their script.

Needless to say, this was the last MATRIX movie I saw in a theatre.

1 out of 5 stars An Exercise In Franchise Annihilation..........2007-04-09

"Reloaded" turns out to be a whopping disappointment. I caught the midnight preview of this movie and was expecting a satisfying sequel building from the strengths of the first Matrix film, which was an instant sci-fi/action classic. Instead, we were treated to a terribly botched effort. Apparently, the first film was a fluke for the Wachowskis, whose writing and character building skills simply evaporated after the smash success of the first film. Alongside the likewise awful "Matrix: Revolutions", the once promising team proceeded to demolish the legacy of what could have been the next "Star Wars Trilogy". Hence, a potential all-time classic series of Matrix films was not to be. What went wrong?

    Plenty.

For starters, the original characters were not refreshed or developed adequately. We fully expect to see Neo's awesome powers on full display, and here the Wachowskis do not disappoint. However, the Neo character remains virtually the same, his realization that the Oracle's prediction was correct and that he truly is "The One" failed to boost his confidence or convince him to truly lead his comrades towards victory against the machines ( Imagine Luke Skywalker in "Return Of The Jedi" still behaving like a whining farm boy). Instead, Neo takes a back seat to Morpheus again. The relationship between Neo and Trinity is still flat, I sensed no on-screen chemistry between the two at any time.

The supporting cast have a small degree of development, but it is too little, too late as the movie plods along between killer (if not cliché) action sequences. Central character Agent Smith is altered into a more powerful "Smith", OK. This classic villain has been ruined by an awful script long on existential rhetoric but short on captivation. The CGI "Squidies" are badly overdone here as well as in "Revolutions". We expect to see more sophisticated and diverse machines introduced, especially in a world of machines such as this. Instead, the squidies are the only muscle the machine empire can produce to combat the Zionites. The program-run-amok characters such as the Merovingian are silly and lame.

This movie was a financial blockbuster due mainly to the action sequences, which were superb despite the overdone CGI effects. It's a shame that the excellent storyline introduced in the first movie was thoroughly trashed beginning with this sequel and continuing into the third and (thankfully) final installment.

First off, I will say that I enjoyed these movies as great entertainment.

I realize that for some people, these movies are vehicles for philosophy for you. We each have different vehicles that work for us to learn the truths of life, so I am trying not to be too arrogant in my comments, but I am just flabbergasted that so many people follow the text and slightest nuance (intended or not) as if it were holy writ.

It really scares me that our culture has become so sanitized and bland, that people are looking to movies like this for meaning. Sure, there is a little there, but it is smashed in with new-age mumbo and eye-candy. You want to learn of life and truth? Read Ghandi, read the words and thoughts of truly great men. Or really take the plunge into profound searchings for the truth and meaning and read Christ, Buddha, or Mohammed.

You want things in movie form? Watch Ghandi, the killing fields, Hotel Rwanda, or Schindler's list, etc.

But it you really want to learn philosophy, the kind that really matters, go seek out those who suffer more than you can possibly imagine, look in their eyes and hear their stories. Keep your heart open and let them touch you. Cry with them. It is amazing how fully life begins to change.

There is so much more out there than what is found in this movie! Put the video games, football games, and beer aside for Just a moment, and try to truly see. It gets addictive, trust me.

After all the controversy and rigorous debate has subsided, Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ will remain a force to be reckoned with. In the final analysis, "Gibson's Folly" is an act of personal bravery and commitment on the part of its director, who self-financed this $25-30 million production to preserve his artistic goal of creating the Passion of Christ ("Passion" in this context meaning "suffering") as a quite literal, in-your-face interpretation of the final 12 hours in the life of Jesus, scripted almost directly from the gospels (and spoken in Aramaic and Latin with a relative minimum of subtitles) and presented as a relentless, 126-minute ordeal of torture and crucifixion. For Christians and non-Christians alike, this film does not "entertain," and it's not a film that one can "like" or "dislike" in any conventional sense. (It is also emphatically not a film for children or the weak of heart.) Rather, The Passion is a cinematic experience that serves an almost singular purpose: to show the scourging and death of Jesus Christ in such horrifically graphic detail (with Gibson's own hand pounding the nails in the cross) that even non-believers may feel a twinge of sorrow and culpability in witnessing the final moments of the Son of God, played by Jim Caviezel in a performance that's not so much acting as a willful act of submission, so intense that some will weep not only for Christ, but for Caviezel's unparalleled test of endurance.</p>

Leave it to the intelligentsia to debate the film's alleged anti-Semitic slant; if one judges what is on the screen (so gloriously served by John Debney's score and Caleb Deschanel's cinematography), there is fuel for debate but no obvious malice aforethought; the Jews under Caiaphas are just as guilty as the barbaric Romans who carry out the execution, especially after Gibson excised (from the subtitles, if not the soundtrack) the film's most controversial line of dialogue. If one accepts that Gibson's intentions are sincere, The Passion can be accepted for what it is: a grueling, straightforward (some might say unimaginative) and extremely violent depiction of the Passion, guaranteed to render devout Christians speechless while it intensifies their faith. Non-believers are likely to take a more dispassionate view, and some may resort to ridicule. But one thing remains undebatable: with The Passion of the Christ, Gibson put his money where his mouth is. You can praise or damn him all you want, but you've got to admire his chutzpah. --Jeff Shannon</p>

1 out of 5 stars A snuff film masquerading as a Biblical epic.......2007-05-22

Roger Ebert, whom I respect, gave this film a good review when it was released, and I went to see it based on his recomendation.

Well, I've disagreed with him before.

Nothing in this movie explains what Christ was about. Nothing about the Sermon on the Mount, nothing about what he taught at all. It was all about how he died a gruesome death, an obsession that Gibson puts above everything else.

I noticed in the negative reviews of "The Last Temptation of Christ" that many reviewers expressed enthusiasm for Gibson's film, but hated Scorsese's, which I found a moving examination of what it must have been like for Christ to struggle between the human and divine sides of his nature. (An account based not on the Gospels, as many believed, but upon a thoughtful writer's imagination.) How, after all, can Christ be an inspiring example if he was never tempted by the things all men and women are tempted by?

    The "Passion" is perverse.

5 out of 5 stars Kill The King.......2007-05-07

There sure was a lot of controversy surrounding The Passion of the Christ when it was released back in 2004.

After finally viewing the movie this past weekend, I can certainly see why the movie is deeply upsetting...especially to all that believe that Jesus was The Messiah. The Passion portrays Christ's death as one of the most brutal I have ever seen in any movie, and I've watched a lot of modern day TV & film with some ugly death scenes...including HBO's Rome that suggests it was a pretty barbaric time in the hundred or so years Before and After Christ.

Perhaps the interpretation that Christ's death was so horrifying was "controversial" to some because they'd have preferred a depiction of a "kinder, gentler" murder of Jesus. I'd therefore have to go with "deeply upsetting" versus "controversial" when asked about the violence in this movie.

The other word-of-mouth controversy that I heard about regarding this movie was that the Jewish community was angry because The Passion depicted Jews as cruel and savage. On the contrary...Jews were depicted no more uncivilized than others living in the period. If fact, according to The Passion it apparently wasn't even the Jews that directly murdered Jesus; Jewish priests did have him arrested. But ultimately--according to the canonical Christian Gospel that the The Passion clearly based a lot of its story from--it was Pontius Pilate (the governor of Roman Judea) that presided over the trial of Jesus and ordered his crucifixion. Hence, it was the Romans that carried out a death sentence and did most of the actual torturing and crucifying.

Therefore, as for controversial....I say, what's all the hub-bub, Bub?

As for the movie...it was extremely powerful. Informational...educational even. The film's dialogue is in Aramaic, Latin and Hebrew, with subtitles. And do indeed watch it with the subtitles; watching in the native languages adds a whole degree of reality to a movie that already comes off as very believable.

The acting is first class. James Caviezel's portrayal of Jesus is burned onto my memory. There are many aspects to this movie that I will not soon forget. Because of The Passion I have a whole new respect for the Communion ritual practiced in many Christian religions.

To me this movie far outweighs controversy with its excellent adaptation of how an event in a very tumultuous period in History could have gone down.

The Passion of the Christ is a collector's item. Add it to your cart.

    5 out of 5 stars No Greater Love . . . .......2007-04-11

In the film Gibson adds the scene where Christ tells his Apostles "There is no greater love than to give one's life". Now that I'm an adult, if I could watch how much my own parents have endured with unselfish sacrifice, sleep deprivation, worry, and suffering to raise me in the best unselfish way they could to make me a better person, I guarantee you, I would be thankful. In fact any child would want to run to their loving parents with a tearful embrace asking their forgiveness in taking them for granted. To watch what another endured for me inspires me to be unselfish in raising my own children and in going out of the way for others without complaint. This is the essence of Christianity and this is the message The Passion delivers.

    Description

The Passion of the Christ focuses on the last twelve hours of Jesus of Nazareth's life. The film begins in the Garden of Olives where Jesus has gone to pray after the Last Supper. Jesus must resist the temptations of Satan. Betrayed by Judas Iscariot, Jesus is then arrested and taken within the city walls of Jerusalem where leaders of the Pharisees confront him with accusations of blasphemy and his trial results in a condemnation to death.

1 out of 5 stars Not the Jesus I Know..........2007-05-28

I must say that I found this film quite disturbing. Its because I am a Christian and I really hated how this movie was only about the crucifixion of Jesus. It is based more on the Catholic tradition of stages of the cross than any kind of Biblical tradition to be quite honest. Uplifting the gore and the violence of the cross is not about the Christianity that I have come to understand at all!
I would actually give the film zero stars if i had the chance. There is nothing in the movie about the life of Jesus and there is only a three second suggestion of the resurrection of Jesus at the end. In my opinion, the life and resurrection of Jesus is more central to the understanding of Christianity that I have than the crucifixion of Jesus has. I do not skim over the crucifixion of Jesus by any means but my soteriological understanding of that deals more with the fact that Jesus' own actions lead him to the crucifixion by healing on the Sabbath or by not submitting to the powers that were. Forgiveness is something Jesus did in his life, not just in his going to the cross. But he still forgives our sins as a result of his resurrection through his presence among us.

Unfortunately I found more responsible theological reflection in South Parks parodyk, the Passion of the Jew. And I feel like Mel Gibson took advantage of the religious right to make a lot of money with strong attitudes against Jews. I'm sorry that I supported this movie at all.

3 out of 5 stars Jesus Came To Earth to Shed His Blood For Us.......2007-05-27

Jesus came to this earth to die and rise again so that we might have eternal life because He loves us all. Every human being in this world was created by God, and has the right to accept Jesus Christ in their hearts. One religion does not have a monopoly on Him. Being of a certain religion does not make one worthy of eternal life with Christ...only His blood makes us worthy. We can only have eternal life through His blood. There is no other way that we can be saved. We can't go to confession, we can't go to Mass, we can't pray over beads, and we can't take communion to be saved from eternal damnation. That being said, if people watch The Passion of The Christ, and still believe that they can be saved some other way besides through the blood of Christ, then there was no purpose to the movie.
Jesus came to call sinners to repentence. Many of the reviewers claim to be Christians but are going back and forth arguing over whose religion is better, and whose is more historically accurate in their knowledge. So far I have not read where many "lost sinners" claim to have repented of their sins and given their lives to Christ after watching this movie. I watched Jesus of Nazareth in the 70's along with my young children. I then went to Church and gave my life to Christ. I know of other people who were not Christians (some are now ministering the gospel), and after watching Jesus of Nazareth, they gave their lives to Christ.
This is the sort of impact that a spiritual up-lifting movie should have on the world. God loves the world, everyone in the world.

5 out of 5 stars Passion of the Christ.......2007-05-18

What can I say. This is an awesome movie, and difficult to watch. I do not advise that young children watch it. Or those that can not take seeing another in graphic pain. It is profoundly moving and worth the time reaing the subtitles, however this DVD also enables those with Visual Handicaps to enjoy the movie with narration.

5 out of 5 stars He saved us even though we were sinners!!.......2007-05-16

I saw this movie at a theater and was moved. When I bought this item and watched it on Good Friday alone, I wept like I have never wept before. After the movie was finished my head was full of everything, mental and physical. It took me many tissues to remove what this movie had done to me. Christ saved us. He took all our punishment on Himself, which this movie has shown us. If this movie doesn't affect you, I would suggest pleading to God for Him to send down His Grace upon you. Once He does, accept it!

5 out of 5 stars Great telling of the biblical story of Joseph.......2007-06-13

I recently bought this on DVD after having watched my parents' VHS version over and over again throughout the years. I love this story. It is perhaps my favorite biblical story. The movie does such a great job showing the human side of these characters and allowing you to visualize the settings. The only gripe I have is that I really don't like Leslie Ann Warren, so her depiction of Potiphar's wife always annoys me. Other than that, the actors are extraordiary and the story is great!

    5 out of 5 stars Joseph.......2007-05-14

This is one of my favorite Bible stories and this production is absolutely wonderful.

    5 out of 5 stars A Forerunner.......2007-05-13

It's hard to believe Ted Turner had anything to do with this production. Certainly a credit to him. It's the best "Joseph" to date. A must see for the many Christians whose portrayal of God's man has not given credit to the true gospel. God's man was not "full of himself," nor did he ever think himself better than his brothers, although his character was much better than theirs. The Lord God had chosen the right man for the job...

5 out of 5 stars Bringing the Bible to life!!.......2007-05-05

This is by far my most favorite of the "Bible Collection" movies. It is done very well, and yes there are a few scenes that get a little steamy, the movie should be reviewed by parents before deciding to let the kids view it without being ready to hit the fast forward button.

As far as I can tell it is biblically accurate and really brings to life this great old story.

You will see and understand this story in a whole new light after viewing this masterpiece.

I have seen this film many many times and the ending still gets me wiping away the tears from my eyes.

This is truly a great movie and you will not be disappointed!

4 out of 5 stars Well done treatment on Joseph.......2007-04-29

This was an excellent video. It was a bit too steamy in the scenes with Potiphar's wife trying to seduce Joseph (too much for kids). However that did not negate it scriptural accuracy of the story line.

The sets were a bit sparse feeling, however it did not take away from the fact that this was a well-directed and produced movie.

    Enjoy!

After all the controversy and rigorous debate has subsided, Mel Gibson's <I>The Passion of the Christ</I> will remain a force to be reckoned with. (It is also emphatically <I>not</I> a film for children or the weak of heart.) Rather, <I>The Passion</I> is a cinematic experience that serves an almost singular purpose: to show the scourging and death of Jesus Christ in such horrifically graphic detail (with Gibson's own hand pounding the nails in the cross) that even non-believers may feel a twinge of sorrow and culpability in witnessing the final moments of the Son of God, played by Jim Caviezel in a performance that's not so much acting as a willful act of submission, so intense that some will weep not only for Christ, but for Caviezel's unparalleled test of endurance.

If one accepts that Gibson's intentions are sincere, <I>The Passion</I> can be accepted for what it is: a grueling, straightforward (some might say <I>unimaginative</I>) and extremely violent depiction of the Passion, guaranteed to render devout Christians speechless while it intensifies their faith. Non-believers are likely to take a more dispassionate view, and some may resort to ridicule. But one thing remains undebatable: with <I>The Passion of the Christ</I>, Gibson put his money where his mouth is. You can praise or damn him all you want, but you've got to admire his chutzpah. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

While it offers nothing new to the military action genre, <I>Tears of the Sun</I> distinguishes itself with fine acting, expert craftsmanship, and seriousness of purpose. Its familiar "extraction mission" plot is essentially similar to that of <I>Black Hawk Down</I>, involving a crack team of U.S. Special Ops commandos struggling to rescue innocent missionaries amidst the bloody horror of Nigerian ethnic cleansing. With Bruce Willis as their grizzled, no-nonsense commander, the skillful team enters a hot zone that gets even hotter when their "package"--an American national (Monica Bellucci) who runs the isolated mission--demands that 70 Nigerian villagers be included in the rescue. Willis's uneasy conscience leads him to defy orders and expand his mission, and in an ambitious follow up to <I>Training Day</I>, director Antoine Fuqua escalates tension and strike-force with considerable emotional impact. Originally considered as a potential entry in Willis's <I>Die Hard</I> series, and released on the eve of America's war with Iraq, <I>Tears of the Sun</I> admirably avoids jingoism with its rousing story of personal good vs. political evil. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

    4 out of 5 stars Solid Entertainment.......2007-06-15

This was a good enough movie - pretty solid acting, entertaining in most spots. However, I noticed this movie wasn't filmed anywhere near Africa -it was filmed on the island of Kauai (pretty tough eh?)

    4 out of 5 stars A Better Version.......2007-06-13

This Director's Extended Cut is much better than the theatrical release. This version places the film in a more understandble political context in Nigeria than merely rebel troops running after "indigenous" personnel. The Director's cut added scenes which explains how the story unfolded as oppose to a mere military action flick in the theatrical release.

5 out of 5 stars a rare film, politically honest.......2007-05-12

Islamists take over the government of Nigeria, kill the president and most of his family and proceed through the countryside slaughtering everyone who is not a Muslim. As one character puts it, "This is what they do."

In usual American media fashion, this movie usually refers to these Islamists as "rebel forces." However, it is remarkably honest that they are identified at all (once only at the beginning) as Islamists. Ordinary rebel forces, even communists, don't chop women's breasts off, or kill priests and nuns simply for being Christians, or kill them by chopping their heads off with a sword (the method required by the Koran).

This movie also gives you a look at your own possible future in the U. S. There are six million Islamists in America, and documents discovered by Steven Emerson (Jihad in America) and Karvey Kushner (Holy War on the Home Front), among others, indicate that the same fate is planned for the United States.

So, see this movie. Because, "this is what they do."

    3 out of 5 stars A Solid Movie.......2007-03-28

This film was entertaining and moved pretty quickly. Only a few slow spots. Not much character developement but a good action/war flick. Unfortunately like a lot of films of this genre it assumes that military officers constantly disobey orders and do as they feel. Willis is also a bit old for his rank (48 when the film was released) but he carries it off pretty well. If you don't think too hard while watching this you will enjoy it.

When 12-year-old Renato, riding through his small Italian town on his new bicycle, sees the voluptuous Malèna, little does he know he's launching on an infatuation that will carry him through the tumultuous days of World War II. <I>Malèna</I> begins as an enraptured depiction of Renato's adolescent mind--the way he stares, hypnotized, at Malèna's garters pressing through the material of her tight skirt, or his frustrated rebellion against the indignity of wearing short pants--but soon transforms into a portrait of small-town prejudice. Malèna's looks spark lust and envy in the townspeople; when her husband dies in combat, the gossip only intensifies, to the point that Malèna is dragged into court to defend herself against accusations of adultery. When the women of the town refuse to sell her edible food at the market, Malèna has little choice but to become what she's been unjustly accused of being. At the end, a twist of fate turns this tale of longing and jealousy into a heartbreaking love story. Monica Bellucci exudes the can't-help-it eroticism that makes Malèna such a lightning rod for everyone's desires; she's like a more zaftig Isabelle Adjani. The movie seems to wander at times, but the ending has a powerful emotional impact. From the director of <I>Cinema Paradiso</I>. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

    Description

But only her most ardent admirer, young Renato Amoroso (Giuseppe Sulfaro), will learn the untold true story of the mysterious and elusive Malena! In a captivating motion picture nominated for two Academy Awards, the eventual struggles and hardships that Malena must bravely endure serve to inspire Renato to new heights of compassion, courage, and independence!

Loved it. Romantic, beautiful and She is gorgeous too.

5 out of 5 stars Exellent film pity about the DVD.......2007-05-06

I wont go into the stupidity of cutting scenes out of this first rate film too many people have already mentioned it. If companies think that veiwers are too stupid to make up their own minds on what they want to watch then they realy shouldnt bother producing films. Sad to say, when Americans complain about their films being cut they need to take a look at the idiots who clasify films in the UK (Average age 80) Must be great them sitting through hours of 'explicit scenes' only to cut them for us the masses. I can only assume they think we dont have the ability to watch a film and make up our own minds we need others to do that for us.

Anyway on with the film. Monica Bellucci is an exellent actress and in this film she plays a woman who pursued by almsot every man in her small town while her husband is away fighting in the war finaly gives up when she believes that her husband has died. First falling for the well to do in the town then sleeping with what it would seem half the German army based in the town. The horror of the reprisal against her at the end of the war and the final happy (to some extent) ending.

great film, if you can find the uncut version get it. Film editors need to put a stop to this we are grown adults let us decide what we want to watch.

4 out of 5 stars American version probably fine.......2007-04-13

I purchased the imported uncut version, however that too is lightly censored. I read some reviews saying the cut version was basically crap compared to the original version. Well I haven't seen the cut version, but I don't think the 13 minutes that was cut from the film will be missed by most individuals. The story is about a 12 year old boy's infatuation and sexual fantasies of Malena. The scenes that were cut I would probably guess were scenes where he was fantasizing about her. Where he and she are in (at times) intimate positions. Its not like a Misses Robinson where the young boy is of age, this is a 12 year old. So I can see where Americans could find this objectionable or not really something they need to see to get a complete picture of the story. The only thing really censored in this movie is when the camera pans down to the "southern" regions of women, and a tinted blob covers the "offensive" area. Well personally I found it more disturbing when the whore was licking Renalto's chest. Overall I enjoyed the movie, but just wanted to point out the differences so someone else could make an informed decision on which version they want to buy.

2 out of 5 stars Great film....but this dvd release is total crap.......2007-04-02

This has to be one of my favorite films. It is a shocking, powerful, and very tragic tale that leaves you breathless. I also think this is Monica Belluci's best role. However, with that said, this DVD release is total crap. I saw the international version earlier and really liked it, so I recommended to my friends that we rent it. To my dismay the american version was highl
