Since audiences are inclined to F/X spectacle, it was easy to understand the 1998 box-office battle between <I>Armageddon</I> and <I>Deep Impact</I>, which shared almost exactly the same premise. But two films about the now-obscure long-distance runner Steve Prefontaine? <I>Without Limits</I> and <I>Prefontaine</I> were in production at the same time, with the cheaper <I>Prefontaine</I> rushed into theaters in 1997 while <I>Without Limits</I> was held back until the fall of '98. As it turned out, neither movie scored a deep impact at the box office, but <I>Without Limits</I> is much more satisfying as a competent, heartfelt slice of sports history. Billy Crudup (a rising star who strongly resembles the film's producer, Tom Cruise, in both looks and intensity) plays Prefontaine, or "Pre," the mustachioed runner who blazed out of Coos Bay, Oregon, in the late 1960s. The movie grazes across the major events of Pre's career at the University of Oregon, where he blew away the competition and positioned himself as the leading American runner (and a charismatic hunk) going into the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich--that star-crossed competition at which Arab terrorists kidnapped and killed members of the Israeli team. Though the film suffers from some of the built-in problems of the true-life biopic, director Robert Towne (who earlier made a remarkable track-and-field picture, <I>Personal Best</I>) captures the texture of the athletes' world. Acting honors go to Donald Sutherland, turning in an emotional performance as coach Bill Bowerman; while tutoring Pre, Bowerman was tinkering with some waffle-soled running shoes, a hobby that later became a little company called Nike. <I>--Robert Horton</I>

Description

What defines greatness? Who wins life's toughest contests? How much of a role do mental and psychological challenges play amid physical ones? "What It Takes" seeks to answer these questions and others. The documentary profiles four elite Ironman triathletes - three Canadians and one Australian who together have won 6 world championships and dozens of major races - and follows behind the scenes for a year as they quest for the 2005 world championship in Kona, Hawaii. Running just over 98 minutes, the movie includes footage of the athletes training, racing, and resting, and also opening up in extensive interviews to share their thoughts and feelings. Viewers learn much about the sport of triathlon and the duel for athletic supremacy, but also about the very human issues which confront the four athletes in an up-and-down, unpredictable year. <P> The movie was shot at 24 frames per second on a Panasonic SDX-900, and is presented in 16:9 widescreen format. Its rich cinematic feel and sweeping visual imagery from places around the globe - including Australia, Canada, Dubai, and numerous locations in the United States, including Hawaii - combine with compelling storylines to produce a fascinating narrative about four athletes, four human beings, and one dream, the Ironman world championship.

Without Limits is the best running movie I have ever seen. If this movie cannot motivate you, better call an ambulance. Great American character. Need to be more Steve Prefontaine's out there. Must see if you are a runner. Great movie even if you are not.

5 out of 5 stars Without limits.......2007-01-10

The greatest running movie of all time. I have to say i have prolly seen it well over 200 times. As well as my whole cross country and track team who joined in watching before every meet for 3 years.

3 out of 5 stars Story of an Overachiever in Sports........2006-09-14

This film documents the training and durability of Steve Prefontaine from Oregon to become a track star who overcame all odds to win. In his early live, he had been picked on by bullies because of his mother's nationality so, like Forrest Gump, he had to learn to run fast from those crass youngsters. When he finished high school, he was courted by several universities but chose to stay in his home state to be trained by Bill Bowerman at the University of Oregon.

Steve was a go-getter who really didn't know his place and was unsophiscated, not knowing how to pace himself. Word of talent gets around and the athletes stick together. He is told by his coach that it takes eight percent more energy to be a leader than a follower. Steve always wanted to lead the pack and be out front. Bowerman thought he was a god.

One song fit in with the action, the Barry White sexy talking, when he hurts his foot in a very strange way. He resorts to telling lies about exactly how he hurt it. Female can be an athlete's downfall, but Steve was unconcerned and had a determination to win at any cost. It was a likely story, and sometimes he had to admit that "it wasn't a nice thing to do."

He was able to run in the 1972 Olympics in Munich after graduating from high school in 1969. He burned himself out trying to be the best.

4 out of 5 stars A very good bio pick of a great runner who died too young.......2006-08-22

Steve Prefontaine, a record setting middle distance runner, won all his races against Americans. He led his race in the 1972 Olympics but faded to fourth by a breath. He died in a car accident (drinking was involved, but to what degree is debated) in 1975 at the age of 24. All admit that he wasn't the perfect physical specimen for a runner, but he was gritty and tenacious and would not give anything less than everything he had.

You would think it would be hard to come up with a full length bio pic about someone who died at 24. Yet, in 1998 there were TWO films that came out about his life. One from Disney and the other from Warner Brothers.

The Disney Film tells the story from the point of view of the assistant coach who was with him day-to-day, Bill Dellinger and Prefontaine's girlfriend at the time of his death, Nancy Alleman. It has a good cast with Jared Leto as Prefontaine, Ed O'Neil as Bill Dellinger and R. Lee Ermy as Bill Bowerman. Siskel and Ebert reviewed it and gave it two thumbs up.

The Warner Brothers release was produced by Tom Cruise and told from the point of view of Bill Bowerman with Dellinger as a minor character and Mary Marckx. In this film there is no Nancy Alleman and Mary is his girlfriend all the way through. Bowerman is played by Donald Sutherland and is given guru status. In both films, Prefontaine is shown as headstrong and difficult to coach. Bowerman did remain active with the Oregon program and with Prefontaine after his retirement.

In both films, Prefontaine is shown as a powerful and hard charging runner who also loved to party too much and had troubled relationships with his young women. The fans love him and his fame is correctly portrayed as is his loss at the '72 Olympics.

Since the accident occurred while Prefontaine was alone in the car no one can be certain how it happened. Both films have him swerving from a second car, but the Warner film shows the rock face that the car climbed and caused it to flip on top of the runner and crushing him. He was alive when first found, but the person could not flip the car alone and by the time they got back he was gone.

Prefontaine continues to inspire young runners and people who believe that testing your limits and giving all you have is important to living and understanding your life. That these tests are a kind of art that you create for yourself and are a kind of honesty that few actually experience (even though it is open to all).

Both movies are good, and you have to decide if seeing two films about such a short life is needed, but there is certainly much worse fare shown every night on TV and at your local movie house.

<I>Patch Adams</I> raises two schools of thought: There are those who are inspired by the true story of a troubled man who finds happiness in helping others--a man set on changing the world and who may well accomplish the task. And then there are those who feel manipulated by this feel-good story, who want to smack the young medical student every time he begins his silly antics.

Staving off suicidal thoughts, Hunter Adams commits himself into a psychiatric ward, where he not only garners the nickname "Patch," but learns the joy in helping others. To this end, he decides to go to medical school, where he clashes with the staid conventions of the establishment as he attempts to inject humor and humanity into his treatment of the patients ("We need to start treating the patient as well as the disease," he declares throughout the film). Robin Williams, in the title role, is as charming as ever, although someone should tell him to broaden his range--the ever-cheerful do-gooder à la <I>Good Will Hunting</I> and <I>Dead Poets Society</I> is getting a little old. His sidekick Truman (Daniel London) steals the show with his gawky allure and eyebrows that threaten to overtake his lean face--he seems more real, which is odd considering that Patch Adams does exist and this film is based on his life. Monica Potter is the coolly reluctant love interest, and she makes the most of her one-dimensional part. While moments of true heartfelt emotion do come through, the major flaw of this film is that the good guys are just so gosh-darn good and the bad ones are just big meanies with no character development. <I>Patch Adams</I>, though, does provide the tears, the giggles, and the kooky folks who will keep you smiling at the end. <I>--Jenny Brown</I>

5 out of 5 stars Robin Williams Shows He can Act! .......2007-06-04

The movie has a great story and message - then add to that the all-around acting talent of Robin Williams and you have got a great telling of true story. It is entertaining and inspiring!

I serve on a a board for a non-profit organization that is trying to help today's veterans with PTSD - and Patch Adams is also on that advisory board with me. He continues to care and continues to give service. The man is for real.

5 out of 5 stars Patch Adams Review.......2007-03-23

Robin Williams is amazing in this role. We just don't realize his talent as an actor. I just loved the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Patch Adams.......2007-03-10

Super movie. Great inspirational to all health care providers. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars A Must See Movie.......2007-02-16

Robin Williams is his zany, crazy self in the 1998 movie Patch Adams. The movie is based on the life of Hunter "Patch" Adams and the book Gesundheit. Patch Adams played by Robert Williams is a medical student at Virginia Medical University where he takes an unconventional approach to medicine. Patch Adams shows us that humor is really the best medicine. Robin Williams and co stars Daniel London, and Monica Potter all give wonderful performances in Patch Adams. This is absolutely a must see Movie for both young and old! For those curious to know the poem that Patch recites to Corinne (Played by Monica Potter) throughout the movie is entitled "I Do Not Love You" and was written by Pablo Neruda a Chilean poet, and diplomat, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1971.

4 out of 5 stars not my kind of movie, but..........2007-01-28

This film was one of those, that when it starts you think "Oh no, here we go, it's a serious film, and I thought, with Robin Williams in it, it was going to be light-hearted". Well, that's exactly what it is! Robin portrays Patch Adams as a caring and sensitive person, who, quite by accident, finds his purpose in life, and quite literally, nothing will stand in his way.

Although there is a romance, it is handled very delicately, and as a result does not become to involved with the whole point of the story, which is to improve the treatment of sick people. This is definitely a "feel good" film as when it is over, you find yourself smiling and wishing you knew someone with the tenacity to enjoy life as much as Patch Adams, obviously does.

I recommend this as a good way to find out what Robin Williams is capable of, even if you're not a fan (just rent it and decide for yourself)

<I>Saw</I> opens with a gruesome scenario: Two men are chained to the walls of a grimy bathroom with a bloody corpse lying on the floor between them. Tape recordings tell them that one of the men has to kill the other, or his wife and child will die. The corpse is holding a gun in one hand, but it's out of reach...but whoever has locked these two up has thoughtfully provided a hacksaw that can't cut through the heavy chain, but might cut through a little flesh and bone. From there, <I>Saw</I> jumps back and forth as the two men slowly unravel how they know each other and that their tormentor is one of those all-knowing, all-capable serial killers (it goes without saying that <I>Saw</I> is hugely influenced by <I>Seven</I> and the movies of Dario Argento), a fellow known as Jigsaw who disguises his voice and lets a creepy puppet (lifted almost directly from the eccentric animations of the Brothers Quay) be his visual representative. But imitation isn't inherently bad; what puts <I>Saw</I> ahead of its horror compatriots is a gleeful enthusiasm that a dozen sequels to <I>Halloween</I> couldn't muster. <I>Saw</I> has problems--it's clumsily overwritten (every detail of what's going on, no matter how visually evident, will be explained by the characters); most of the situations are static and implausible; and though the cast includes talented veterans like Cary Elwes (<I>The Princess Bride</I>) and Danny Glover (<I>Lethal Weapon</I>), the acting has the depth of a puddle. The rapid pace and frequently frenzied camerawork keep things in motion and while the philosophical underpinnings of Jigsaw won't challenge Hegel or Schopenhauer, they do offer more food for thought than most contemporary horror. Discriminating fans of the genre who like their gore with a glimmer of an idea will embrace <I>Saw</I>.

The <I>Uncut Edition</I> differs only slightly from the theatrical release; it reinserts a little more gore that was cut to get an R rating and tightens up the editing (the uncut version is actually a teensy bit shorter than the theatrical release). The extras are plentiful (if a bit thin): Two audio commentaries (one by director James Wan, screenwriter/actor Leigh Whannel, and Elwes), one by the producers--thankfully, no one takes themselves too seriously. Also included are a trio of typically self-congratulatory making-of featurettes ("He was amazing to work with" etc.), an animated storyboard of a sequence they couldn't afford to shoot, a DVD-ROM game in which you can construct your own puppet, a couple of self-mocking Easter Eggs, and lots of promotional stuff for <I>Saw II</I>. There's a very curious faux-news show purporting to be an investigation of the "real" Jigsaw, which uses clips from the movie as if they were documentary footage--it's hard to say whether this is a misguided attempt to make the movie seem creepier or a bit of flimsy humor. Most fans will find the regular DVD release satisfactory; this special edition is largely for hardcore enthusiasts. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

4 out of 5 stars Brilliantly sick and twisted...if you can stomach it.......2007-06-20

After countless raves from nearly every one of my horror film loving friends, I decided one day it was time for me to watch "Saw," an indie slasher film premiering at the Sundance Film Festival as one of the "Midnight Movies" that is widely considered one of the greatest horror films of its generation. In no way does this film disappoint, no matter what you are looking for in a film.

Let's start with the story. Two young men--a doctor named Dr. Gordon, and a photographer named Adam--wake up chained to the wall in a dirty, old washroom. Neither of them know how they got there--and they don't know each other either. There is a slaughtered corpse between them eerily clutching a tape recorder and two tapes addressed to each of the men. The message is clear: one must find a way to kill the other by 6:00 that evening or they will both--along with Dr. Gordon's family--be killed.

Before long, they realize they are now victims of the Jigsaw killer--a known serial killer who captures people who do not appreciate life and force them to hurt themselves or others in order to save themselves from a bloody, gruesome, brutal, torturous death. In a series of flashbacks, ze discover more about Jigsaw, and experience previous encounters his victims' have had. We learn of Gordon and Adam's past, an obsessed detective dedicated to finding Jigsaw, and a young drug addict named Amanda who survived Jigsaw's sick "games" and is now mentally scarred. As the story unfolds, it suddenly explodes into a brilliantly twisted psychological thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the credits roll after the shock ending and even for some time after that. Lots of hardcore gore and an INCREDIBLY SCARY atmosphere accompany this much-above-average slasher flick.

The acting is both great and dreadful at different times, but is always thoroughly realistic. Jigsaw is perfectly cast in his role. Adam was sort of an annoying character, but still managed to deliver, and Dr. Gordon seemed like some WAY overdramatic guy out of Star Trek, and was the only character in the small cast I was actually hoping to get killed.

The directing and editing is absolutely nothing to rave about and is solely why I didn't give Saw 5 stars. The flashbacks are adequetly done, sometimes poorly, but unfortunately, for a super psychological horror film like Saw, that is a huge failure and deserves negative feedback. Very fortunately, the strong storyline and sheer terrifying simple atmosphere holds the film together.

Overall--a very enjoyable movie watching experience, and it will scare the living daylights out of you if you watch it alone on a big screen with surround sound. Not one for the little kids however, as it is very violent in some select scenes (particularly the ending) but that shouldn't keep you from seeing it. Very good and much, much more and above and ultimately smarter and more brilliant the average super-violent slasher horror films that are out there today.

4 out of 5 stars Wow - That was a surprise!.......2007-06-15

This was not as gory as I had been led to expect. The twists ARE NOT as predictable as most people think. No.. you don't really see the ending coming.
This is a psychological thriller and it's very good. Well done. There were discrepancies like someone having flash backs to someone else's memories. And some people acting pretty much annoying and the excuses for acting out of the very character templates are rather weak. A cop stays a cop. And if he's watching someone leave a building, he should have noticed when someone went in - or more specifically that he missed it when they went in and had an alarm go off in his head.
Characters are engines to further a plot but they need to be more or you end up with GhostShip where frankly you don't even bother remembering anyone's name - you already know their parts and purposes.

I will definately get the next one. This movie was such a pleasant surprise!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best horror movies I've ever seen!!.......2007-06-01

If you like scary movies, you'd know that they're pretty much all the same. You have an inhumane killer that murders dozens and dozens of people either because they had a rough childhood or for no reason at all. If you've seen one scary movie, you've seen them all, right? Fortunately for horror movie fans, the creators of Saw have come up with a fresh and original concept that has spawned two sequels.

So what's this movie about? It starts out with two men passed out on opposite sides of a decrepit (and secluded) bathroom where they are chained to pipes. Oh and not to mention, there's a dead man lying down in a pool of blood in the middle of the floor. When they come to, they find a tape and upon listening to it, find out that they have to play a game in order to free themselves. The twist? This game is far from being fun. The reason? In order to free themselves, they must cut through their feet to escape. With a saw. The men must figure out why they were chosen to play the game, how, and what happens if they don't escape.

Horror movie fans, this is a must see. And if you don't like scary movies, you must see this anyway. Just turn your head during the gory parts. You'll still truly appreciate the mystery and surprise that surrounds this movie.

5 out of 5 stars A Horror Classic.......2007-05-26

SAW is a true horror classic no doubt about it. Damn he {or she} who remakes this film...EVER. In the world of gore-porn and endless remakes or "re-imaginations", {I have to say this ~ Rob Zombie is pathetic for "re-imagining" Halloween...thanks for trashing it Rob} SAW stands alone as a film that is sick, very disturbing, scary, intense, frightful, mentally numbing, thrilling, avante garde, theatrical, spontaneous, evil, and macabre! This is a film where the villains recorded voice is as disturbing as his actions..and the villain is not even revealed until the last minute of the film...literally the final scene. The film cannot be compared to Se7en because we see most of the torture in the film and the villain takes up more time giving his monologue than Jigsaw's "Most people are so ungrateful to be alive...but not you...not anymore."

Two men wake up in a grimy abandoned bathroom chained and unable to escape. We see a dead man laying in the middle of the floor. His tape recorder reveals the two men are part of a deadly "game" in which only one of them will survive...if he can find the primal instinct..the "will" to survive. As the film progresses we learn about "Jigsaw" who tortures his "test subjects" in order to make them appreciate their lives they have apparently abused. Jigsaw's "test subjects" include: Jeff a man who attempted suicide but failed, Amanda the drug addict, Adam the voyeur photographer and loser, and Dr. Gordon a doctor who neglects his wife and daughter. Jigsaw makes them realize their blessings in his tortuous devices where the subject must maime his/her self or another to escape.

The films gives us clues to the identity of Jigsaw, directing attention to the orderly called Mr. Hindel aka "Zepp"...or is the killer one of the men chained in the bathroom? Dr. Gordon? Adam? The film is a Hitchcockian mystery to figure out 'who is doing this...and why?' that draws you to an intense and disturbing {not to mention disgusting} climax that will leave you stunned.

I like the film because like Se7en there is a sick twisted pathos that is plain and painfully clear in our times: "most people are so ungrateful to be alive...."

The Curse of Aleister Crowley: Descent into Lies and Madness

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent Horror Flick.......2007-04-20

I'm not exactly sure why, but I hate to admit I liked this movie. It was blood, guts and gore at its very best. Halloween sets the standard in horror, as far as I'm concerned, and this is in no way on par with that movie, but it kept me engaged and on the edge of my seat. It's a simple plot filled with a lot of elaborate killings scenes. I liked it enough to rent two and three, and if a Saw four comes out, I'll rent it to. If you like horror with gore, you can't miss this movie.

After an obligatory prologue in which its detective hero suffers a tragic professional setback, <I>Along Came a Spider</I> sets about its business of luring the viewer into its nefarious plot, relying on the magician's technique of misdirection to reveal a double-whammy surprise. The clever, late-coming plot twist is a bit too mechanical but effectively unexpected, making this a satisfying prequel to the hit thriller <I>Kiss the Girls</I>--based on the first of James Patterson's Alex Cross detective novels--and a welcomed addition to a promising movie franchise. It's no better or worse than a good vintage episode of Peter Falk's <I>Columbo</I>, adhering closely to the mystery-thriller's time-honored traditions, but with Morgan Freeman settling comfortably into his role as seasoned sleuth Alex Cross, familiar formula is given fresh vitality.

When a senator's daughter is kidnapped from her high-security private school, the kidnapper (nicely played by the underrated Michael Wincott) draws Cross into the case, knowing that the psychologist-detective's involvement will bring high-profile publicity. Cross partners with the Secret Service agent (Monica Potter) who botched her assignment, but wait... the movie's got a rabbit in its hat... and that rabbit has an ace up its sleeve... and director Lee Tamahori (who brought similar intensity to <I>The Edge</I>) handles the sleight-of-hand with slick precision, dispensing just enough information to keep the viewer off guard without resorting to cheap manipulation. Don't look for much depth of character here, but <I>Along Came a Spider</I> is well served by everyone involved. It's the movie equivalent of a bestseller you'd impulsively buy at the grocery-store checkout, and on those terms it succeeds. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

4 out of 5 stars Effective thriller!.......2007-01-15

An intelligent script supports this movie with intriguing double crosses and smart twists of fate, although the information is there in front of us. Don' t blink and pay attention to every single shot. Interesting
psychological puzzle with gratifying results.

5 out of 5 stars movies.......2007-01-04

I found that the movie came in record timing and in excellent condition, thanks

1 out of 5 stars Read the book instead.......2006-12-06

The book was great -- the movie has almost nothing in common with the book. The screen writers really screwed up on this one. If you have read the book, I definitely advise skipping this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Aaaah Morgan Freeman.......2006-11-16

It's all there...drama, action, and suspense. This movie will keep you glued to your seat with all its twists and turns. And Morgan Freeman is a bonus. If a movie has Morgan Freeman in it, then 9 times out of 10 it will be an awesome movie. This is no exception...Great movie.

5 out of 5 stars Plot twists I didn't see coming.......2006-09-15

Morgan Freeman as Alex Cross...Doesn't get much better than that. Monica Potter ...well, look up cute in the dictionary..Her picture is there. Anyway, this had some serious plot twists that somehow all seemed to make sense as they got tied together. Morgan Freeman continues to demonstrate that he is one of the best actors in film today.

Con Air is proof that the slick, absurdly overblown action formula of Hollywood mega-producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer (Top Gun, Days of Thunder, The Rock, Crimson Tide) lives on, even after Simpson's druggy death. (Read Charles Fleming's exposé, High Concept: Don Simpson and the Hollywood Culture of Excess, for more about that.) Nicolas Cage, sporting a disconcerting mane of hair, is a wrongly convicted prisoner on a transport plane with a bunch of infamously psychopathic criminals, including head creep Cyrus the Virus (John Malkovich), black militant Diamond Dog (Ving Rhames), and serial killer Garland Greene (Steve Buscemi, making the most of his pallid, rodent-like qualities). Naturally, the convicts take over the plane; meanwhile, on the ground, a US marshal (John Cusack) and a DEA agent (Colm Meaney), try to figure out what to do. As is the postmodern way, the movie displays a self-consciously ironic awareness that its story and characters are really just excuses for a high-tech cinematic thrill ride. Best idea: the filmmakers persuaded the owners of the legendary Sands Hotel in Las Vegas to let them help out with the structure's demolition by crashing their plane into it. --Jim Emerson

4 out of 5 stars Con Air.......2007-06-08

Nicolas Cage can play a southern boy real good... He can be kind and tough at the same time....

4 out of 5 stars "Welcome to Con Air".......2007-02-13

...John Malkovich's character (Cyrus the Virus) announces after taking over a state of the art prisoner transport plane. This and many other lines help make Cyrus one of the most charismatic and lovable convicts I've seen in a long time (he is the bad guy in the movie though, but I can't help but like him). There is tons of other great characters in this movie as well, many of them covicts. Nicholas Cage, John Cusack, Steve Buscemi, David Chapelle, and Ving Rhames are all solid as usual.

Yes this is standard Jerry Bruckheimer action fare, but that's not a bad thing. It's a movie made to entertain and that's it. There is loads of comic relief and pleasantly cheesy dialogue that helps to make sure you don't take the film too seriously. As mentioned by others the Unrated Extended Edition DVD has absolutely no special features, which is a little disappointing, but the movie by itself is worth the price regardless.

2 out of 5 stars I expected more.......2007-01-29

Maybe my expectations were a little high. I never saw this movie in the theaters so I recently watched this extended edition on DVD. Nicholas Cage has a terrible southern accent throughout the movie - why - I'm not sure as his character doesn't need to be from the south. And I thought the law enforcement was a bit over the top with the macho, kill everyone, innocents be damn attitude and in fighting. There was a lot a action but most of the time I thought it was just stupid. For example, an under cover cop posing as a con had a concealed gun and the second he was released he pulled it out instead of waiting until he could get the ring leader who had the only other gun. Overall I was disappointed in this movie.

4 out of 5 stars everyone's "favorite movie!".......2006-11-26

ok, well let's step aside from all of the brainiac responses. people can't take away anything from a review if they can't understand the terminology.

con air is a pretty action packed movie. nicholas cage plays a pretty good role, though sometimes his hillybilly accent drives me nuts. the plot is typical action moiveish, but i like it. the budget for this movie was well, quality is great. con air is alot of people's "favorite movie", and with a script written so well, i can understand why.

this movie has a little bit of everything nestled in. you've got plenty of comedy and laughs, some dry humor, some serious action that'll have you on the edge of your seat, and even some drama. the ending will leave you with a sense of relief. yes indeed, this movie combines many theatrical attributes.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Entertainment.......2006-10-13

Despite it's cast of respected actors, 'Con Air' is not a good film in the traditional sense. It's not a good film in the way Pulp Fiction, Casablanca, and/or Taxi Driver is a good film. But for sheer entertainment and high velocity action, 'Con Air' is one helluva movie. Oscar winner Nicolas Cage (Best Actor, 'Leaving Las Vegas') plays Cameron Poe, a good man who is sentenced to 7to10 years in prison after killing a man in a bar brawl while defending his wife (Monica Potter). As Cameron waits out his 7 years, his wife gives birth to their daughter and it turns out that Cameron is getting out on her birthday and he's determined to make a good impression. To get from the federal prison he's in to where his wife and daughter are, he must ride on a plane filled with dangerous inmates (besides Cameron, the rest of the men are being transferred to higher security joints). Once the plane begins to move, a plan is set in motion. On the plane is the psychotic, yet brilliant Cyrus "The Virus" Grissom (John Malkovich) who leads the crusade of rebellious criminals...With the help of Diamond Dog (Ving Rhames) and all the other inmates aboard of course. Meanwhile, a cop named Vince Larkin (John Cusack) becomes an aide to Cameron as he puts his wits to the test to outsmart Cyrus and the rest of the gang. Add in Steve Buscemi as a hilariously dangerous psychopath and a pre-Chapelle show Dave Chappelle as Pinball, a crack addict...You got a great action movie with some comedic relief. The movie is completely illogical, in almost every aspect. So disregard logic at the door, it's not needed here. But you got to look at the bigger picture here. Is this merely a good action film because of it's high adrenaline? It also has to do with the cast. Most action films have action stars in it. In this film, we're given highly respect and even Oscar nominated/winning actors. You have Nicolas Cage, who's accent sounds a bit fake but is good nonetheless. You got Ving Rhames, who's perfect. You have Steve Buscemi as a pointless character, that you actually grow to like and even appreciate...Then you have John Malkovich. What a completely underrated actor. He's never won an Oscar, a lot of commercial film viewers don't even know who he is, and this guy is one of the finest American actors. Even in this film, the way he delivers his dialogue and that steely look in his eye is just so perfect. As I said...If you want a smart, logical action film. This is not for you. If you want a pull-no-punches action film, with great performances to boot. Here's "Con Air"

2 out of 5 stars Meh..........2007-03-19

All the beautiful people in this movie --and there are plenty of them-- can't make this movie attractive. "Rear Window" as a comedy is a great idea, but the film is hobbled by a lame screenplay, full of cliches and lacking in laughter, and bad acting. Yes, Freddie Prinze Jr. is very cute, but he can't act to save his life.

4 out of 5 stars cute movie.......2007-03-10

This was cute, it is one of those movies that you can just watch and laugh for a little bit.

5 out of 5 stars Head over Heels.......2007-01-31

Love the show. Very Romantic. Chick-Flick, although my husband likes it too.

5 out of 5 stars just watch the scenes with the models or the co-worker.......2006-04-30

Fast forward through the storyline scenes only involving Freddie Prinz and Monica Potter. The model roommates and the love-hungry co-worker are enough to make for therapeutically fun watching.

5 out of 5 stars Very funny and entertaining.......2005-10-04

This was one of my all time favorites. It has comedy and romance. Monica Potter was great and of course Freddie Prince Jr. had my attention through the entire movie. I recommend this to all my friends. Even though I've watched it many times I still get a good laugh and just an overall great feeling after watching this movie.

Adam (Leigh Whannell) wakes up in a dank room across from Dr. Lawrence Gordon (Cary Elwes) and the body of a guy who has blown his own brains out. Not a happy place, obviously, and it gets worse when both men realize that they've been chained and pitted against one another by an unseen but apparently omniscient maniac who's screwing with their psyches as payment for past sins. Director James Wan, who concocted this grimy distraction with screenwriter Whannell, has seen <I>Seven</I> and any number of other arty existential-psycho-cat-and-mouse thrillers, so he's provided <I>Saw</I> with a little flash, a little blood, and a lot of ways to distract you from the fact that it doesn't make a whole hell of a lot of sense. Wan and Whannell (who's not the most accomplished actor, either) pile on the plot twists, which after some initially novel ideas become increasingly juvenile. Elwes works hard but looks embarrassed, and the estimable Danny Glover suffers as the obsessed detective on the case. The denouement will probably surprise you, but it won't get you back the previous 98 minutes.<I>--Steve Wiecking</I>

4 out of 5 stars Did you see what I saw?.......2007-02-01

I have just watched this movie for the first time and it is, as well, the first time I have watched a blu-ray movie. I am using a Sony XBR3 46', Samsung BD P1000 Blu-Ray Player, Harmon Kardon AVR 745(in video bypass mode for 1080p)and Mirage 5.1 Omni Speakers with 2 Klipsch Surrounds for 7.1. I say all of that so you can compare your configuration with mine. I would say that the video quality is better and anyone who says that it is not is just being negative. I understand this negativity because honestly if you own Saw on DVD, I do not, I would guess that it looks nearly as good especially 1080i with Faroudja. However I have to say that the sound difference was stunning. I may be alone on this but I am as much a sound guy as I am a video guy and the uncompressed PCM in 7.1 was insane. I turned the volume nearly off and it still was unbelievable. I am no techno whiz but I would suspect that original DVDs have a more severe compression on the audio than on the video and once both are uncompressed, although there are great improvements in both the audio really stands out.

2 out of 5 stars Poor Quality.......2007-01-15

I agree with the first poster, the quality is not much better than a standard DVD. Its very grainy is many spots too.

2 out of 5 stars Great Movie, Horrible Picture Quality.......2006-12-06

This movie has a great plot but as it was one of the first released titles on Blu-Ray it has poor picture quality. If you want to show off your new blu-ray player try to get some of the more recently released titles as they have much better picture quality.

The generic title of <I>The Very Thought of You</I> suggests a bland, by-the-numbers romantic comedy, which is probably why it never made it into theaters. Its dialogue certainly doesn't help--there's a lot of piffle about destiny and "having only one chance," etc.--but there are some surprising differences. The plot centers around Martha (Monica Potter), an American trying to start a new life in London. She meets three men (Tom Hollander, Rufus Sewell, and Joseph Fiennes, who played the title role in <I>Shakespeare in Love</I>). These three are best friends and all three fall in love with her, but the one she falls in love with feels like he's betraying the others to be with her. Despite the resulting confusion, she pursues him to the end--which makes it unlike most current romantic comedies in which the woman is a hapless love object to be captured by the right guy. But more entertainingly, <I>The Very Thought of You</I> pays particular attention to the ways men delude themselves, because the two friends Martha doesn't care for are both convinced she's hankering for them, which allows for some fairly subtle skewering of the male ego. It's a flimsy movie, but no more so than <I>Notting Hill</I>, and Joseph Fiennes in particular has a relaxed, winning charm that marks him as a rising star. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

4 out of 5 stars Can you really find your soul mate in 48 hours?.......2007-01-10

I mainly bought this movie because I loved "I'm with Lucy" which starred Monica Potter. This movie was fun to watch. It's crazy to imagine meeting your soul mate within 48 hours and also his two best friends who also like you. I liked how the story was told in each characters point of view, which was different and unexpected. This is definitely a "chick flick" :)

4 out of 5 stars I love this movie.......2006-03-26

It's sweet, funny, and thoughful. Girl meets guy, and his 2 (jerky) best friends, each unaware that they've met & fallen for the same girl. She's unaware that she is also lusted after by the two best friends of the guy she's fallen for. Confusion ensues. Guy makes a life-changing choice, despite the fact that he thinks he's lost the girl, and winds up with the girl after all. The two (former) best friends are left behind, not realizing what actually happened.

A bit confusing in the way it's told: in flash-backs, but all in all a great story about finding love in the least-expected of places, and not letting one's life stagnate.

3 out of 5 stars Darling bunny meets lovesick spaniel, snuffling ensues.......2006-02-26

This movie is one more amiable, if slight, entry in the seemingly endless romantic comedy derby. In this one, Monica Potter turns her special, Valentine's Day adorable bunny rabbit charm on three feckless Englishmen (a well-worn character in the romantic comedy genre on both sides of the Atlantic but increasingly annoying in its English incarnation), the best known of whom is Joseph Fiennes (who looks rather weaker and sillier than I recall him looking in most of his films). The plot is heavy on circumstance and happenstance and weak on character and emotional involvement. I never really felt that there was the slightest chemistry between the two leads. Ms. Potter, a sweet if somewhat cloying actress with almost aggressive American good-looks, works hard to convince us of her convictions which amount to needing to change her entire life from the ground up. Looking at her we can hardly believe that any of the things which she tells us about her terrible past are true. She is just too clean and too terrifically healthy and downright pretty to have had a trying youth and a less than boisterously successful present. As for Mr. Fiennes, we don't get Will Shakespeare, we get Hugh Grant Lite (thanks, Mr. Grant, for raising stammering diffidence from mere character aspect to full character status) a tongue-tied fool who just cannot speak when he needs to. The wonderful Ray Winstone - pre-Sexy Beast - is used here merely as a foil through which this backward-told tale is related. The unfolding of the plot is clever enough and the players congenial enough to make this film easy to sit through. I gave it three stars, but it deserves more like 2 ½.

3 out of 5 stars The Man is Handsome.......2006-01-14

This is a cute date flick, pop the wine cork, and throw the popcorn in the microwave. Sure, the coincidence of three best London male friends falling for one Minneapolis blonde-haired woman in a few days is unlikely in real life, but film is not real life. If it were, we would be watching non-stop documentaries or less contrived reality TV.

So I'll go along with the quirky, desperate attempt by little Miss Nobody, Monica Potter, Marsha from Minneapolis (a Mary Tyler Moore with a bad attitude) attempt to fly anywhere; just get me out of town and on to my new life where little people are appreciated. Then she meets in succession: the wealthy short person in the music business, his friend, the failed child actor, and Joseph Fiennes, a bridge teacher. I think they could have come up with a more believable occupation for cynical Shakespeare in Love, but the man is handsome and your date will warm up for later activities.

5 out of 5 stars I agree with whoever said "Clever, charming, and witty.".......2004-10-31

Highly recommended! Thought it was great! One of the best romantic comedies I've seen.
