Cool and introspective, Otto Preminger's sleek, stylish <I>Bonjour Tristesse</I> is one of his most understated films. Jean Seberg stars as a spoiled teenager who acts with a high-society sophistication beyond her years, and dapper David Niven is her playboy father, going through young female playmates like socks. Flitting through the French jet set and comparing conquests, they summer on the gorgeous French Riviera, where mature fashion designer Deborah Kerr enters their lives and wins Niven's heart. Seeing an end to her lifestyle, Seberg plots an end to the relationship with equal parts conniving ruthlessness and juvenile prankishness, too self-absorbed to even consider the brutal results of her actions. Told in flashback from a sleek but shadowy black-and-white Paris, the film melts into the vivid Technicolor of memory. Seberg's voiceover narration is arch, but her impish, often petulant performance is perfect, as is Niven's flippant, womanizing bachelor father (Preminger lets their curious, flirtatious intimacy hang like an unanswered question and a nervous subtext). Kerr's middle-aged working woman seems almost puritanical compared to the irrepressible travelers, but under her rules and limits lies an honest concern for a "child" who believes herself an adult. Preminger's camera prowls through the drama just removed enough to be respectful, and intimate enough to get under the characters' skin. Gerard Depardieu has the one of the most bizarre roles of his long film career in the French film "Menage" from director Bernard Blier. When the film begins, Monique (Miou Miou) is in a nightclub fighting bitterly with her passive, downtrodden husband, Antoine (Michel Blanc). Along comes a well-dressed stranger named Bob (Gerard Depardieu). He jumps into their argument and proceeds to befriend them with a large wad of cash. Bob persuades Monique and Antoine to come out and have some fun, so they set off together for the evening. Bob, however, is a burglar, and his idea of fun is breaking into the houses of the very rich, very jaded, and very bored.

Antoine, at first, objects to the burglaries, but he soon gives in to Monique's pleas for material comforts. As they commit burglaries, Antoine's morality is slowly eroded away, and several times, he turns to Monique for moral salvation, but since she's also vacuous and adrift, they both sink further into Bob's demented world. Anyone with a grain of sense would run from Bob, but both Monique and Antoine are soon pulled down by Bob's domineering personality and seem mesmerized by his animal energy. A bizarre--partly psychological--love triangle begins to emerge--with Monique desiring Bob, and Bob desiring Antoine, and Antoine desiring Monique.

"Menage" is described as a comedy, and some parts are extremely funny, but more than anything else, it's overwhelming and gloriously bizarre. Gerard Depardieu throws himself into the role of Bob with obvious relish--parading around naked and at other times wearing skimpy animal print bikini undies while he stalks his prey--the diminutive, dour Antoine. Bob is a totally amoral seducer and master manipulator, but is his ultimate goal really sexual? Or is he more interested in stripping away objections and morality until he finally manipulates people into acts they never deemed possible. If you like your French films bold, bizarre, demented, and you don't object to strong sexual content, then there's a good chance you'll enjoy "Menage." Great cynical film.......2002-11-10

The original title of this film is "Tenue de soiree". A very ironic title if you consider the story : two [unsuccessful folks] meet smart guy (Gerard Depardieu) with money and connections. Only problem : the money has dubious origins and the connections are a little too connected to the crime world. Let's not even talk about the sexual depravity of Mr. Smart who offers his new friends the brilliant career of prostitution.
The film is a must not only because of the weird and hilarious story but also for the great lines (a condition of success in French theaters). Who will forget the famous comment : "When I see your gloomy face, I feel like ordering a coffin " ?
This film has become a classic in France. It displays the same black humor as "Le pere Noel est une ordure" (you don't want me to translate this and you don't want to know what happens to Santa Claus).
If you want to discover French cinema, you better get used to Bernard Blier's destructive humor, who spares nobody.

MENAGE or "Tenue De Soiree", as it is called in French is a subtle comedy which will not leave the viewer untouched. A burgler (Depardieu) befriends a spatting couple at a bal, and proceeds to court the husband (Michel Blanc, of "Monsieur Hire") into an intense intimate relationship. What follows is the threesome's adventures through Parisian nights and a variety of situations, one more absurd than the next. The original version is exquisitely written, and the dialogues border on poetry. All the actors demonstrate their talents opposite each other and form an exceptional cast. This film would most likely be listed under "comedies" but it's range encompasses many genres. A definite must see for any fan of Depardieu who is flawless in this film.
