Almost as welcome as a shaker full of martinis, <I>The Complete Thin Man Collection</I> represents an eagerly awaited DVD milestone for fans of the fizzy MGM movie series. The best film in the series came first: <I>The Thin Man</I> (1934), W.S. Van Dyke's marvelous adaptation of a Dashiell Hammet novel. The movie gods were in a generous mood when they paired William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles, the upper-class sophisticates whose sleuthing escapades somehow joined the classic form of the whodunit with the giddyup of screwball comedy. Among the series' many attributes, one of its most radical notions was the idea that a married couple might find each other delightful and view life as a goofy adventure together.

It is common wisdom that the <I>Thin Man</I> sequels adhere to the law of diminishing returns, and while none of the follow-ups reach the diamond level of the first film, all afford pleasures. There's the cocktail-swilling chemistry of Powell and Loy, for one thing, as well as the considerable satisfaction of average movies made during the studio system: the craftsmanship of studio hands, and a gallery of terrific character actors filling in supporting roles. First sequel <I>After the Thin Man</I> (1936) is very good, with the couple in San Francisco and a supporting part for rising player James Stewart. The scenery moves again, to Long Island, for the rather impudently-titled <I>Another Thin Man</I> (1939), which adds baby Nick, Jr., to the mix (a "bad idea," thought Pauline Kael, perhaps a sign of the domestication of the series).

<I>Shadow of the Thin Man</I> (1941) sets the action around a racetrack, and is the last of the series to be directed by the fast-working Van Dyke. <I>The Thin Man Goes Home</I> (1944) finds Nick escorting family to his parents' house for a visit. <I>Song of the Thin Man</I> (1947) engagingly adds a jazz milieu to the Charles's detective work; at this point, Nick, Jr. was played by child star Dean Stockwell. The series stuck with certain staples: the unveiling of the guilty party, a wirehaired terrier named Asta (who became a star in its own right), and booze. When Nick opines, in the first film, that a dry martini should always be shaken to "waltz time," you know why audiences fell in love with these guilt-free comedies. <I>--Robert Horton</I>

Description

The sparkling series featured the irresistible William Powell and Myrna Loy chemistry as husband and wife sleuths who solved murders with the aid of their wire-haired terrier, Asta. Set in the glamorous world of 1930s upper-class Manhattan, The Thin Man and its sequels established the standard for witty comedy, clever dialogue and urbane one upmanship. The 7-Disc set includes THE THIN MAN, AFTER THE THIN MAN, ANOTHER THIN MAN, SHADOW OF THE THIN MAN, SONG OF THE THIN MAN, THE THIN MAN GOES HOME, and the ALIAS NICK & NORA bonus documentary disc.

5 out of 5 stars Love the Thin Man.......2007-06-09

If you like mystery and comedy together than this is the collection for you. Myna Loy and William Powell are so good together, they should be up there with Hepburn and Tracy, Bogie and Bacall. I know they made alot of movies together beside the Thin Man series. The Documentary disc is really good because you can't find to much information on William Powell anymore and that is a shame because he was always one of my favorite stars. I loved all the movies in this collection and so glad that I added it to mine and you will be too...

5 out of 5 stars Nick and Nora and Asta too!.......2007-05-30

This is a perfect box set containing all six movies of the popular Thin Man series. The first movie was based on the novel by Dashiell Hammett and teamed the great William Powell and wonderful Myrna Loy for the second time. Their first feature, also released in 1934, was "Manhatten Melodrama." To say that the pair exuded chemistry is an understatement. Though the best of friends, Powell and Loy, were never romantically linked. This did not stop fans from believing that they were. And why not, Powell and Loy managed to create an image of marriage that is as sexy as any courtship. In many romantic comedies, the dramatic tension ebbs when the romantic pair gets together. Powell and Loy manage to transcend this limitation, not only in these films, but also in seven others which run the gamut from comedy to melodrama.

The Thin Man films also owe a great deal to the writing, Hammett continued to be somewhat involved in the early spin offs from the original, but the series also benefited from the scripts produced by Albert Hacket and Francis Goodrich, who were married in real life. This point of view probably contributed to the success of series as a whole.

This boxed set contains all of the movies in the series along with biographies of Powell and Loy. There is also an episode of the 1950s TV series which only goes to show just how well the original film series was executed.

The films range from excellent to good. The sixth film in the series probably is the weakest of the lot, It appears that the producers were attempting to inject elements of film noir into the light hearted detective series and this just does not work. However, Powell and Loy managed to turn in excellent performances which rise above the problems with the script and its execution.

Probably the only thing that would make this boxed set better would be if it included the other seven films which starred Powell and Loy since they are always interesting, no matter what the subject matter.

great cant say enough about this series. loved the thin man movies as a kid and still do. Wish there were more

5 out of 5 stars Nick and Nora Review.......2007-05-08

The entire series depicts the engaging relationship that Nick and Nora Charles have; played by William Powell and Myrna Loy, they are coyly sexy.
The suave William Powell is always charming and Myrna Loy is sexy without trying to be. While the subsequent movies are short on story line, the husband and wife banter make up for it. They all represent the old fashioned "whodunit" black and white movies we grew up loving where the star gathers all the characters together into a room and we discover who the guilty party is.
Charming..............

Winner of seven Academy Awards, including best picture, director, actor, and screenplay, William Wyler's brilliant drama about domestic life after World War II remains one of the all-time classics of American cinema. Inspired by a pictorial article about returning soldiers in Life magazine, the story focuses on three war veterans (Fredric March, Dana Andrews, and Harold Russell in unforgettable roles) and their rocky readjustment to civilian life in their Midwestern town of Boone City. Capturing the contradictory moods of America in the mid to late 1940s, this three-hour drama spans a complex range of honest emotions, from joyous celebration and happy reunion to deep-rooted ambivalence and reassessment of personal priorities. A movie milestone when released in 1946, The Best Years of Our Lives still packs a punch with powerful, timeless themes. --Jeff Shannon

Description

It's the hope that sustains the spirit of every GI: the dream of the day when he will finally return home. For three WWII veterans, the day has arrived. But for each man, the dream is about to becomea nightmare. Captain Fred Derry (Dana Andrews) is returning to a loveless marriage; Sergeant Al Stephenson (Fredric March) is a stranger to a family that's grown up without him; and young sailor Homer Parrish (Harold Russell) is tormented by the loss of his hands. Can these three men find the courage to rebuild their world? Or are the best years of their lives a thing of the past? Featuring a brilliant cast that includes Myrna Loy and Virginia Mayo, this postwar classic garnered* seven OscarsÂ(r), including Best Picture. Heart-wrenching, touching and "filled with emotional dynamite" (The Hollywood Reporter), it remains "one of the best films about war veterans ever made" (American Movie Classics). *1946: Director, Actor, Supporting Actor, Writing/Screenplay, Film Editing, Music/Scoring of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture

5 out of 5 stars These were the Best Years of Our Lives.......2007-06-09

What a great movie. The scenes between Fredick March, Myna Loy and Theresa Wright where Theresa told them that they alway had the perfect life and marriage and Myna looks at Fred and say "how many time have I told you that I hated you and meant it?" Then he looks at her and say "how many times did we have to fall in love all over again?" Its so gooood...Harold Russell great actors and deserves the TWO Oscars. Anyone that hasn't seen it really needs to check this one out..

5 out of 5 stars Thoughtful, touching film.......2007-05-07

I love this movie. Though all the actors were excellent, Harold Russell is the reason to watch this movie. He deserved every ounce of his two - yes two - Oscars that he received for this role. He is amazing to watch. Though disabled, it was hard to consider him handicapped. I once used this film in my sunday school class. The lesson was on overcoming adversity and I showed the scene where Russell plays a piano duet with Hoagy Carmichael. The girls in my class were amazed. Then I shared with them some of the other things Russell had accomplished in his life - like being a founder of AMVETS. Russell's off screen story is a story in itself and should be made into a movie. Unfortunately, no actor could convincingly play him. That's the key to the impact he had on the screen - he wasn't an actor - he was a real, disabled person. Watch this movie - you'll be amazed too.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Black & White War Movie.......2007-05-07

This was my father's all time favorite movie, which may be one reason I love it so much....then again, it's a damn good movie that still holds up! It is the story of three soldiers return to civilian life after World War II, with an outstanding cast and a great 40's style.

1 out of 5 stars Shame on the Film Makers.......2007-04-08

I don't see how self-respecting African-Americans can watch this film without gritting their teeth. Black people are shuffled off to the sidelines with stereotypical, non-speaking parts: They lug baggage at the airport. They work behind the drugstore soda counter. They don't say anything, they don't go anywhere important, they don't even exist in the poor part of town where one of the featured white characters lives.

The movie is racist. It ignores what the Black experience was like for soldiers in WWII and for the folks at home who put up with the enduring racism.

And the flick got a zillion Oscars. Hollywood felt good about itself. Hooray. Figures.

5 out of 5 stars The effects of war.......2007-03-31

This story of three men who return to small town America after fighting in the second world war, each man wounded in his own private way by the horrors he's faced, is filled with so many small heartbreaks. I very rarely get choked up watching movies (especially ones made in Hollywood) but this one gets me. Yet somehow it manages to be incredibly hopeful. Gregg Toland's amazing deep focus cinematography fills each frame with visually interesting compositions that demand to be seen more than once to take in everything that's being shown. The performances are uniformly outstanding, keeping the movie from ever straying into sentimentality. With a running time of almost 3 hours, it never drags. Every scene feels essential.

A great film.

Cary Grant stars as an advertising executive who dreams of getting out of the city and building a perfect home in the country, only to find the transition fraught with problems. (See the 1980s Tom Hanks comedy <I>The Money Pit</I> for an updated version of the same idea.) The big appeal here are the two leads, Grant and Myrna Loy, who were each in their early 40s and at the peak of their careers. Together with solid support from Melvyn Douglas and a screenplay that might have been tailor-made for their polished brand of comedy, the stars dominate this simple project. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

Description

Cary Grant is hilarious as a successful New York advertising executive who wants to escape the confines of his family's tiny midtown apartment. So he designs his dream home in the suburbs and discovers the project wasn't as easy as it seemed. The house gets larger. The bills get bigger. The problems just won't go away. Eventually, the whole affair becomes a nightmare-a very funny nightmare-that left audiences laughing in 1948 and will have you in stitches, too. This is the comedic masterpiece that inspired the popular 1987 movie "The Money Pit." It's an adventure in homeowning that strikes a familiar chord with everyone who's ever bought a house. Year: 1948 Director: H.C. Potter Starring: Cary Grant, Myrna Loy, Melvyn Douglas

5 out of 5 stars My favorite movie..........2007-05-12

This movie has been my favorite since I was a young girl ~ I am now in my mid-fifties...and I have yet to change my mind.
My favorite actor of all time, Cary Grant, puts in one of the most wonderful performances of his career in this film...as a hapless, exhausted, overburdened middle-class ad exec trying to build a home in the country for his family ~ and set back at every turn through (usually) no fault of his own.
His bank account takes a severe beating by the end of the story, but he indeed gets what he wants...however, not without nearly losing everything of value beforehand!!
This story is one that continues to entertain, enchant and enthrall viewers even today ~ generations after it was first released to the public.
I daresay that the public in those days was thoroughly delighted and if they still made movies like this today, we would be lucky indeed.

5 out of 5 stars A must watch for all homeowners/contractors!.......2007-04-18

My contractor husband has decided this is mandatory viewing for all homeowners even thinking of building or remodeling their home! The film highlights some of the foils of building that perfect dream home, and trust me, not all of them are exaggerated. This is great comedy, even if it does hit a little close to home for those who have 'been there and done that'. I especially love Cary Grant's performance as the flustered husband trying to please everyone while stressed about coming up with a new advertising slogan for 'wham ham'. A slogan that is vital if he wants to keep his job. Wonderful classic!

2 out of 5 stars Mr. Blandings Is a Miss.......2007-04-13

I'm an "old movie buff" and I find this to be a pretty awful movie. It's really full of the most simple-minded dialogue. See these great actors in something that's a little less polemical. The writers' social conservatism just jumps off the screen. You could use this for a Media Studies film to contrast with an "old film" from the same time that shows people living with much more self-awareness. Two stars only for the bright young daughters - great actresses!

4 out of 5 stars Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House.......2007-04-10

You have to be an old movie 'Buff' to enjoy this one. It's a feel-good, old-time movie. Entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Don't miss the paint color choices, and the mud room scene.......2007-03-15

Yes, it's an old-fashioned comedy. But if you like sparkling, intelligent, witty dialogue; the best of performances from the three stars; complete believability even in farcical comedy; and want proof that small New York apartments, interior decorating, and price-gouging contractors, are nothing new, then rent this and enjoy it. The rural Connecticut in this film seems a lot closer to Maine than it does to New York City (which Mr Blandings commutes to every day) and when the town's bridge goes out, everyone is stuck where they are and no one can use a phone--those were the days. Gussie the cook is a bit embarrassing as written, but she turns out to be the smartest one in the bunch--all she gets out of it is a modest raise. Still, keep everything in context, and enjoy it. The film quality is clear (though b & w), the sound good.

3 out of 5 stars Two Good Films - Three Forgettable.......2007-06-17

Powell and Loy are at their best in the last two films, which makes them great fun. I personally prefer I Love You Again to Love Crazy, which is slightly skewered and in some ways unpleasant - Powell's characterization of a cad being a bit too good. I Love You Again finds Powell genuinely loveable, and works better. The moment when he suggests he and his wife, Loy, recreate their honeymoon night, but do everything 'backwards' is as priceless as is Loy's cooling rebutal to his attempt at jumping the gun on the bedroom. Too, Gail Patrick and Jack Carson are more effective in their set-up roles. The best scene: a Lincoln-like Powell, pretending insanity to prevent a divorce proceeding, sets top hats sailing on a swimming pool, "Be free!"
The other three films are hopelessly forgettable.
If I Love You Again and Love Crazy were paired I would rate them at least a 4, possibly a 4 and half. But the rating plummets when they're connected to the others.
When will we be able to see some Powell movies without Loy? Life With Father demands release restored to its glorious colors, not to mention Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid. A set of the best of Powell's Warner Brotthers films?

5 out of 5 stars All but one of the Powell/Loy films are now on DVD.......2007-05-09

This collection contains five titles currently not on DVD that were made starring the famous duo during the same time frame as their "Thin Man" series. With the exception of 1947's "The Senator was Indiscreet", this puts all of the Loy/Powell films on DVD. The extras described below are from a press release from Warner Home Video. The biggest let-down about this set is the lack of commentary for any of the films, but Warner probably figures with the amount of documentary material they put in the Thin Man Boxed Set, they would just be going over old territory. The films, in chronological order, are as follows:

Manhattan Melodrama (1934)
This is more of a movie with Powell and Loy than one about them as a couple. The focus is more on Clark Gable and William Powell, who play two orphans who grow up together but wind up on opposite sides of the law. Myrna Loy plays the woman that both characters love. Gable plays the gangster in this film, Powell the guy who goes up the political ladder. The melodramatic part is that as D.A. Powell's character wins a conviction against Gable's character, and as a result he is sentenced to death. Later, as governor, Powell must decide whether or not to commute his childhood friend's sentence. Powell is very good here at playing a more serious role.
Special Features:
· Comedy short "Goofy Movies #2"
· Classic cartoon "The Old Pioneer"
· Theatrical trailer
· Subtitles: English & French (feature film only)

Evelyn Prentice (1934)
This one seems to miss a step as far as plot holes go, but it is still above average. Powell plays a defense attorney who is also part detective, and whose heavy-duty work habits cause him to neglect his wife, played by Loy in the title role. As a result of this neglect, Loy commits an indiscretion with a playboy and ultimately figures into her husband's next big murder case.

· Classic cartoon "Discontented Canary"
· Theatrical trailer

Double Wedding (1937)
This is a different kind of film for Powell and Loy. Loy plays high-powered businesswoman Margit Agnew who is unhappy to learn that her little sister is planning to marry vagabond Charlie Lodge (William Powell) who, since he lives in a trailer, is hardly in a position to support her. Margit tries to intervene, and in the end winds up with Lodge herself. The plot is thin, but the comedy is very good. This film was shot partly before and after the death of Jean Harlow, who was Powell's lover and Loy's good friend. Filming was suspended for awhile due to the tragedy.
Special Features:
· Musical short "Dancing on the Ceiling"
· Classic cartoon "The Hound and the Rabbit"
· Theatrical trailer
· Subtitles: English & French (feature film only)

I Love You Again (1940)
My favorite non-Thin Man Loy and Powell movie and showcases everything that is great about the chemistry the two had on screen. Powell plays stuffy and rich Larry Wilson, who, after a blow to the head, realizes he is actually confidence man George Carey. Wilson is just some alternate identity he assumed after he first got amnesia nine years before. Realizing he has a sweet deal in his wealthy second identity, Carey decides to clean out Wilson's finances and leave town. However, when Carey meets Wilson's estranged wife, played by Loy, he falls for her and decides to hang around long enough to win her back.
Special Features:
· Crime Doesn't Pay Series short "Jackpot"
· Classic cartoon "Tom Turkey and His Harmonica Humdingers"
· Theatrical trailer
· Subtitles: English & French (feature film only)

Love Crazy (1941)
Another excellent entry in the Loy and Powell series of movies. After four years of marriage, Stephen Ireland (William Powell) runs into an old girlfriend that lives nearby. The two end up just talking, but a series of comic misadventures cause Stephen's wife, Susan (Myrna Loy), to believe Stephen is cheating on her and she decides to divorce Stephen. Desperate to keep Susan, Stephen decides to pretend he is not in his right mind to draw things out. He does such a good job that everyone believes him - except his wife. There is some great physical comedy here by Powell.
Special Features:
· Classic cartoon "The Alley Cat"
· Audio-only bonus: Screen Directors Guild Playhouse Radio Broadcast
· Theatrical trailer
· Subtitles: English & French (feature film only)

Though it's impossible to gauge just how much of it is true, this endearing family comedy (based on the book by their children Frank B. Gilbreth Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey) is inspired by the true story of the husband-and-wife efficiency experts Frank and Lillian Gilbreth and their adventures raising 12 kids at the turn of the century. Director Walter Lang takes a loping pace through the episodes of family life: the kids descend upon the new school in force while Dad (fussy Clifton Webb) offers his unsolicited views on education; Dad takes his oldest daughter (wholesome Jeanne Crain) to the school dance and becomes the hit of the ball; a mass tonsillectomy becomes an opportunity to document the ordeal as an experiment in efficiency. Myrna Loy almost steals the film in her one standout scene, holding back a smirk while a birth-control advocate (played by Mildred Natwick) solicits this mother of 12 to speak at a rally, but her martini-dry comic deadpan is criminally underused in this picture, which is dominated by Webb's stern, military-like parenting and Crain's adolescent crises. Though this sometimes overly sentimental classic never builds to any real dramatic plateau or comic highlights, it maintains an even tone of good humor and warmth throughout, capturing a bygone era through the travails of a loving family. A charming sequel, <I>Belles on Their Toes</I>, followed two years later. <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>

Description

This colorful depiction of life in a family of 12 children stars Clifton Webb as Frank Bunker Gilbreth, an eccentric father who prides himself on some truly unorthodox child-rearing methods. Based on the bestseller by two children of the real Mr. Gilbreth, this charming film co-starring Myrna Loy is "alive with big laughs" (Los Angeles Times). <P>Narrated by the oldest daughter (Jeanne Crain), the story follows a series of family crises over the years: from how the children over-whelmed their new school's administration office, to the time they threw a hospital into chaos when they arrived for a mass tonsillectomy. There's even a memorable encounter with a birth control advocate. Simultaneously hilarious and sentimental, "Cheaper by the Dozen is a family comedy in the truest sense.

The dvd was in excellent condition. I have seen this movie before and I wanted to add to my collection of movies based on true stories. I enjoy comedies as well as movies based on true stories. I would recommend this movie over the ones with Steve Martin.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest ever.......2007-05-07

I saw this as a movie when I was a younger girl. It left such a great feeling I have never forgotten it. Then I was so glad to see I could get it in DVD form. Since receiving it I have watched it numerous times. With a storyline like this one it is such a treat to escape the real stresses of the day. It makes for alot of laughter and warm feeling in the heart. Since I come from a large family it brought back alot of memories. All of them happy ones. I also purchased Belles On Their Toes, the sequel. It was just as entertaining and touching. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to feel good about life.

Greatest movie star ever? How can you argue against Cary Grant, the graceful clown, the ironic romantic? Equally at home in an Alfred Hitchcock suspense piece or a Howard Hawks screwball comedy, the superb Mr. Grant (born Archie Leach) could handle just about anything. And it's a testament to his appeal that this boxed set, which contains not a single great movie, is nevertheless an entertaining catalog of Grant's splendid run during the 1940s.

The earliest picture, and a sheer delight, is 1940's <I>My Favorite Wife</I>, one of Grant's blissful pairings with the wonderful Irene Dunne. He's about to remarry when his first wife washes up again after having been lost on a desert island (with he-man Randolph Scott) for seven years. <I>Destination Tokyo</I> is a WWII submarine picture, with Grant as the stalwart skipper--slightly odd casting, but he brings it off with admirable professionalism. (The film's propagandistic jabs at demonizing the Japanese enemy have not aged well.)

<I>Night and Day</I> is one of those composer biographies that veers rather radically from reality, with Grant playing Cole Porter. A ton of great songs and the canny casting of Cary as the champagne-sophisticate Porter make it passably de-lovely, despite the whitewash of the composer's real-life story. <I>The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer</I> puts Grant in deliciously antic mode, mooned over by teenager Shirley Temple but preferring the company of her older sister, Myrna Loy. He re-teams with Loy in <I>Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House</I>, an artless but regularly hilarious tale of Manhattanites whose Connecticut fixer-upper becomes a money pit. <I>--Robert Horton</I>

Thoroughly recommended. For lovers of old classics & Cary Grant these are a must to have in your library. I particularly enjoyed watching a much older Shirley Temple in The Batchelor & the Bobby Soxer.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Buy.......2007-01-04

This was a high quality packaged item suitable for saving and showing off. The movies are also terrific and will be watched again and again. I was impressed with the quality of the packaging for the price of this set. I expeceted the interior cases to be minimal, but they are first rate.

5 out of 5 stars Can't Go Wrong.....It's Cary Grant.......2007-01-04

I got this set a couple of months ago. All of the movies are clean and easy to watch over and over again. Each movie comes in a seperate case and all five go into a cardboard holder. I like this much better than the Cary Grant: Screen Legend Collection which I have also.(Those movies are in a simple cardboard case, not individual cases.) Anyone who likes Mr. Grant will like this collection. PERIOD

Through no fault of his own, artist and lady's man Richard Nugent finds a love-besotted teenage girl curled on his sofa. Through no fault of his own, the teen's sister is a judge who "sentences" thunderstruck Richard to date the girl until her schoolgirl crush wanes. Circumstances aren't kind to Richard. But they certainly are hilarious when Cary Grant plays Richard, Myrna Loy is the judge and Shirley Temple is the teen.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Man With the Power.......2007-06-14

"The Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer is from 1947, a year that left behind some pretty good films, "Gentlemen's Agreement," "A Double Life," "Great Expectations," "Body and Soul," "Black Narcissus," "The Farmer's Daughter," "Mother Wore Tights," "Green Dolphin street," "The Bishop's Wife" and "Miracle on 34th Street." All in all, not a bad year, although it does seem strange to me that with all those choices, it was this amusing but innocuous little comedy that won the Oscar for the best original screenplay.

This is one of the movies in which Shirley Temple attempted to make the transition from adorable moppet to young woman--well, to teenager, at least. Shirley is not bad, she has a couple of good scenes, as a matter of fact, but it is easy to see why she never made it as an adult movie star. The moppet mannerisms were too ingrained in her acting technique and persona. Every so often, she looks like a seven year-old somehow trapped in a sixteen year-old body. (She was nineteen at the time.)

The movie is one of the later successes of the screwball comedy era (I suppose 1952's "Monkey Business" also with Grant was the last), but it is slowed and softened by the home, mom and apple pie mind-set of the post-War era. Nevertheless, a cast that included Cary Grant, Myrna Loy, Rudy Vallee (surprisingly good in a part that would normally have been assigned to Ralph Bellamy), solid, stolid, familiar Ray Collins and what appears to be about half of the dear, nameless but familiar faces of the Hollywood repertory company, would have been able to spin far less promising material into finest gold.

Archie Leech had honed his Cary Grant creation to perfection and hauled him out in memorable vehicles twice in 1947: here in this film and in even more glistening form in "The Bishop's Wife." As one memorable passage from "The Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer" that swept over the school halls of the day had it:

You remind me of a man.
What man?
The man with the power.
What power?
The power of the hoodoo.
Who do?
You do.
I do what?
You remind me of a man.

Five stars for the man with the power of the hoo-doo.

<I>From the Terrace</I> is one of Paul Newman's lesser-known films, but it's a worthy showcase for the actor's developing screen persona. Like <I>Butterfield 8</I>, this is a slick, prestigious adaptation of a John O'Hara novel, about loose morals and forbidden love among the wealthy elite. Director Mark Robson lacks the mastery of melodrama that Douglas Sirk would've brought to this material, but he's still on target with O'Hara's tale of a prodigal son (Newman) who rejects his late father's steel mill in favor of big-business conquest, only to find his trophy wife (superbly played by Newman's off-screen wife, Joanne Woodward) straying into the arms of her former fiancé, while he falls in love with a socialite (Ina Balin) with whom he's much more compatible. A well-tuned drama of marital discord and unchecked ambition, <I>From the Terrace</I> was sharply adapted by Ernest Lehman between the triumphs of <I>North by Northwest</I> and <I>West Side Story</I>, and Newman's brooding performance gave him a solid boost to his iconic role in the 1961 classic <I>The Hustler</I>. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

Description

Paul Newman portrays a young man whose struggle for success threatens his personal happiness, in this well-scripted screen version of John O'Hara's best-selling novel. Having never known his father's love or respect, Alfred Eaton (Newman) sets out to prove himself in the business world. Marrying the "right" woman (Joanne Woodward), he works unceasingly, but is ultimately confronted with crises and choices that force him to rethink his priorities. Co-starring Myrna Loy as Alfred's alcoholic mother, Leon Ames as his embittered father, and Ina Balin as the woman who might bring him genuine happiness, From The Terrace is an absorbing tale of ambition, power and love fueled by sharp dialogue, complex characterizations and keen insight into the human heart.

5 out of 5 stars Good Stuff!.......2007-05-07

Though I'm sure this was Quite racy in its day, the ideas and ideals expressed are just as relative to today's world and people. What priorties do we set in our own lives? Who suffers from our failures? And are we prepared to accept the consequences of our actions and desicions?

Good stuff!

5 out of 5 stars Gift for Grandma.......2007-03-30

My grandmother mentioned that she loves this film. Of course, I had to find it for her. She called me as soon as she received it and said she was watching it that very moment and she couldn't thank me enough.

5 out of 5 stars Striff.......2007-01-19

From The Terrace is excellant. Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward are always great together, but Ina Balin is sexy and very much in love with Paul. Joanne really plays the spoiled wife at her very best, and Paul drops everything for Ina. A good story, will keep you interested from the first glance. (I am a romantic!) This movie was a gift to a friend, she thanked me highly!!

5 out of 5 stars From the Terrace.......2007-01-12

My favorite movie, Paul Newman at his best, Joanne Woodward a steely ice maiden.

4 out of 5 stars Despite your best efforts, you often become your parents.......2007-01-12

I didn't see what other reviewers apparently saw in this film. I did not see the moral of the film so much concerning the price of success as it being that despite your best efforts, you are often doomed to become your parents. At the beginning of the film, Alfred returns home after the second World War to renounce his father because he has, in Alfred's opinion, ignored his mother while strictly attending to business to the point where his mother has become an adulterous lush. Ten or fifteen years later, Alfred has ignored his own wife while climbing the corporate ladder until his own lonely wife has become an adulterous lush. The only crime of his father's he does not commit is to produce offspring that can be dragged into the mess his life has become. One person with a more warped moral code than either Alfred or Mary seems to be Alfred's boss. While eating lunch he casually informs Alfred of Mary's affair with an old flame. When Alfred reacts by saying that he intends to divorce Mary, his boss warns him against such an action. To Alfred's boss, Mary's behavior isn't a moral failing or a cry for attention - it is an unforgivable breach of etiquette. Overall, the main characters in this film lack redeeming characteristics to the point where the movie almost becomes a film noir soap opera. There are still solid performances by both Newman and Woodward, and it is still worth seeing 47 years after it was made. After all, the idle rich and the mistakes they keep making over and over have not changed that much after nearly half a century.

Burt Reynolds directed and stars in this dark comedy, which suffers from diminishing returns the longer it goes on. He plays a fellow who discovers that he has a terminal illness and wants to spare himself and everyone he knows the seemingly unavoidable end of a painful malady. So he decides to kill himself. But he proves surprisingly inept at it and after several tries winds up in a mental hospital, where he meets a cheerfully homicidal inmate (Dom DeLuise). The suicide stuff was handled more imaginatively and with greater flair in Harold and Maude; the film has very few real jokes and only comes to life twice: when Burt tries to confess to an easily impressed young priest (Robby Benson) and when the lunatic DeLuise is onscreen. <I>--Marshall Fine</I>

5 out of 5 stars "P": IN YOUR PANTS FROM LAUGHING TIME!!!!!!.......2007-06-08

This IS one THE classics along with "Young Frankenstein," "Blazing Saddles," "Texas Across the River," and ALL of the hilarious older movies.

When you're feeling down, pop this in your DVD player or VHS player and brighten up your mood.

3 out of 5 stars Brand new, but not perfect condition.......2007-06-02

Brand new, but some of the movie was blurry and not clear

4 out of 5 stars I found The End.......2007-02-07

I was looking for this video for a while. Amazon had it in stock and I was ecstatic to add it to my collection. Burt Reynolds and Dom Deluise are absolutely hilarious.

5 out of 5 stars Laughed until I cried!.......2007-01-04

Putting these actors together is a sure mix for total insanity! You will need a box of kleenex though, cause you'll laugh until you cry!

5 out of 5 stars Dying is Funny.......2006-07-13

I think this is one of Reynold's top three films. It is an hysterical movie about someone who is dying. There are numerous lines from this film that have become part of my vocabulary. Dom DeLuise jumps off the top of a building, doesn't die and says "you were right, it's not high enough". Even the music by Paul Williams is good. I don't know why this film doesn't get more word of mouth, it rates with Mel Brooks for laughs per minute. Do yourself a favor and watch it and you will want to own it.

Myrna Loy charms as the Gilbreth family matriarch in this enjoyable 1952 sequel to Walter Lang's comedy <I>Cheaper by the Dozen</I>, based on the autobiographical novel by Frank Gilbreth Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey. Picking up from the somber ending of <I>Cheaper</I>, in which Frank Sr. (Clifton Webb) dies, leaving behind his wife, Lillian (Loy), and 12 children, <I>Belles</I> focuses on the family's slow recovery and aspirations for a future. Lillian's qualifications as an engineer are dismissed--sometimes humiliatingly--by sexist men, though she finally receives a training position with the plain-speaking Sam Harper (Edward Arnold) and the respect of a major university. Meanwhile, eldest daughter Ann (Jeanne Crain) is wooed by a young doctor (Jeffrey Hunter), and the other Gilbreth kids weed out unsuitable suitors for their dating-age sisters. Several pleasant musical numbers punctuate the comically unpredictable action, including a few by Hoagy Carmichael as the Gilbreth's wry cook. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

4 out of 5 stars Belles on Their Toes.......2007-01-15

We liked this movie, although I would have liked for it to have included more of what is in the book. Hard to do in a short amount of time. Overall a great family movie! We love the old fashioned movies!

4 out of 5 stars Cheaper By the Dozen 2 - the original sequel.......2007-01-08

Few realize today that the "Cheaper by the Dozen" films with Steve Martin were actually sequels themselves. If you've seen the orignal Cheaper by the Dozen with Myrna Loy than you know that Steve Martin's version didn't even attempt at staying close to the original storyline. With that said, Belles on their Toes is a totally and completely different movie than the 2nd movie in Steve Martin's Cheaper by the dozen films. In Belles on their Toes, we're treated to a story of how the 12 kids grew through the baby graduating. This is a nice story and thoroughly enjoyable as a film in itself. The fact that it's a sequel, in my opinion, doesn't add or detract from it's enjoyment factor.

5 out of 5 stars Belles on Their Toes.......2006-07-05

I am very satisfied with my purchase.

I have been looking in the video stores and other department stores for this very movie. I was very excited to find such an old movie on line.

5 out of 5 stars "Belles on Their Toes" is an excellent sequel to "Cheaper by the Dozen".......2006-05-27

"Belles on Their Toes" is an excellent sequel to "Cheaper by the Dozen"
"Belles on Their Toes" picks up where the Gilbreth family left off in "Cheaper by the Dozen." While many sequels leave much to be desired this sequel is even better than the predecessor. In this movie the mother, Lillian, continues pioneering work in industrial engineering.

A perfect film for the entire family to watch, you won't find any sex, violence or foul language in this movie. The hilarious goings-on of this real-life family will keep your entire family laughing in wanting to know more about this interesting real-life cast of characters. While this film can be purchased in both Technicolor and black-and-white I still prefer the black-and-white version.

This classic movie teaches old-time values and will send your family straits the Internet to find out more about their fascinating lives.

3 out of 5 stars Charming but uneven.......2005-08-16

There's an undeniable sweetness and charm to this film, but overall it just doesn't feel as satisfying and well-developed as the movie version of CBTD. That movie wasn't entirely true to every bit of the book, but it overwhelmingly felt close to the book's spirit despite some things that were left out and some things that were invented. In BOTT, the viewer doesn't get nearly as much a sense of period authenticity and details as in the original; it looks more like something from the Fifties instead of a story taking place in the Twenties. And there were a lot of events from the book left out, commingled with a few things that did really happen in the book; the storyline definitely had far more liberties taken with it. Missing all of these important events that really set the mood for how much this family cared for one another and what a great job they did getting by on their own, one doesn't really feel quite as connected to the characters and the plot as in the original. (It was also interesting to note how they cut and pasted two different but similar events from the first and second books, the film of the family eating dinner at something like ten times the normal speed as opposed to the film of Mrs. Gilbreth demonstrating how time-saving the design of her kitchen was.) The book focuses on Mrs. Gilbreth's struggle to raise her eleven children after her husband dies and how she steps into his shoes, even though she was a female engineer in a man's world at a time when many female professionals weren't taken seriously; in real life she was a lot more successful and welcomed than the movie makes her out to be. It's enjoyable enough family entertainment, just lacks the continuity and even pacing of the original. Because of all of the things that were left out and substituted for by things invented (perhaps to give it a more modern feel, like the scene of the beach barbeque/dance party), it just doesn't flow as naturally or seem quite as engaging.
