Doris Day was nearing the end of her incredibly hard-working Warner Bros. contract when she made <I>Lucky Me</I>, a lighter-than-air confection with a showbiz backdrop. Doris is part of a shoestring song-and-dance troupe, marooned in a Miami hotel after defaulting on a tab. Wouldn't you know it, famed songwriter Robert Cummings is also at the hotel, and he needs a leading lady for his new musical. But first, there's some labored romance as Cummings pretends to be a humble auto mechanic, thus gumming up his chances when romance blooms. That's a thin plot even by the standards of Warners musicals, but <I>Lucky Me</I> gets a boost in the form of CinemaScope, which was still a newfangled widescreen process. Two numbers, especially, shine in the widescreen treatment: the opener, "The Superstition Song," which takes Doris along a few backlot city blocks as she avoids the bad-luck traps awaiting her; and "I Speak to the Stars," a daffy fantasy number set somewhere above planet Earth. The other members of Day's troupe are Phil Silvers, Eddie Foy Jr., and pint-sized Nancy Walker, all of whom trail the aroma of old vaudeville. This is not a memorable movie, but Day was nevertheless at her early-phase twinkliest, and you can see why audiences loved her. <I>--Robert Horton</I>
Description
The star of a third-rate theatrical troupe in Miami catches the attention of a Broadway songwriter.
Customer Reviews:
Doris Horror.......2007-04-26
The DVD cover artwork clearly says, "Doris Day and Cinemascope never had it so good!", and what do Warner Bros give us? A pan-and-scan version of the film, which means we lose exactly HALF (!!!) the film. (Cinemascope is 2.66:1, pan-and-scan is 1.33:1). Shame on you, Warners, shame!
Lucky Me.......2004-04-28
Doris Day stars as Phil Silvers partner in his Broadway show that is a flop called Parisian Pretties a long with 2 other people. Phil is a down and out person who is a looser and a free loader who depends on Doris for the rent and a lot of other things. Doris meets a famous screen wright while working at a HOTEL to pay off their big debt and when Phil finds out he tries to convince her to tell them about him and to try to get him to help them out and get them a chance in the big life. But Doris teaches Phil that the best way to get anywhere is to work for it! So they get into the play and turn from sad people to happy people and Doris finds love.
Suffers from Widescreen cropping.......2004-04-10
This film was made in Widescreen and it should be shown in its original format. All the production numbers take advantage of widescreen format and in this "pan-and-scan" video form they are "squeezed" in a way which does not do them justice. I was impressed by the beautiful "I speak to the stars" but the other production numbers were ruined by pan & scan. DVD please...
"Lucky" for us, it stars DORIS!!.......2003-09-08
"Lucky Me" was the next to last film under Doris Day's Warner Brothers contract. Although she has stated that she didn't believe in the project to the same extent that she'd believed in some of her prior films, you'd not know it while watching her performance.
While far from the best film made during her seven years on the Burbank lot, Miss Day is a delight. In technicolor and wide screen (The first musical to be so filmed), she looks a treat. Her performance is filled with spunk, vitality, exuberance and that unmistakable "Doris Day" glow that never seems forced or contrived. From the first moment we see her bouncing down the street letting loose with "The Superstition Song", we are sold. There's not a false moment in her performance. Her comic skills are given a chance to delight us, even if the script might not be as fresh as we might like. Vocally, she runs the gamut from the lovely "I Speak to the Stars" to "The Bluebells of Broadway". She gives every song the full treatment, again dispelling any displeasure she might have personally felt about this picture.
The cast work well together. Bob Cummings gives the same kind of smooth performance he gave opposite another blonde star, Betty Grable, a decade or so earlier. He seems ageless. Phil Silvers shows he can play more than Sgt. Bilko, and Nancy Walker, years before she started selling paper towels, reminds us of her musical-comedy roots. Eddie Foy, Jr., is amusing and Martha Hyer, who later married famed producer Hal Wallis and wrote (uncredited) the screenplay for the 1975 teaming of John Wayne and Katharine Hepburn, "Rooster Cogburn" is pretty window dressing.
The plot about a troupe of "down on their luck" performers, is not new. Since the inception of talkies it has been done by virtually every performer - male and female. This version doesn't add a lot of new twists. However, the cast play their roles with such conviction, you find yourself smiling at their antics and tapping your feet to the catchy songs.
"Lucky Me" didn't break box-office records when it was released but it deserves a better reputation than it has earned through the years. Thanks to Doris and company, the film is a lucky break for viewers!
DORIS AND LUCKY ME.......2000-08-30
I READ IN HER BIOGRAPHY SHE REALLY WASN'T UP FOR THIS FILM - IT IS A RATHER KOOKY FILM FOR HER BUT I JUST ENJOY ANYTHING SHE IS IN. HER SINGING IS MARVELOUS. I JUST WISH WE HAD MORE.

Long Live Barbarian Brothers!.......2004-12-10
This movie is awesome. John and David Paul are my reason for living! I would be a cop if it were as cool as it is in this movie. Or a criminal. My favorite line, "Politicians are great people, ...everybody should own one." The way it just rolls off his tongue. Just don't watch this movie with someone who doesn't understand the Barbarian Brothers as you will have to beat them unmercifully!
This was the highlight of my day!!.......2003-01-26
If you like things big and dumb, then this movie is for you, cause you're probably big and dumb. Despite not really having a plot, the movie lacks any profesional actors besides the guy from Kung Fu, Peter Wolf. The best part was the total lack of explaination for anything that happened during the entire movie. The only way this movie can provide any entertainment is if it is viewed like Army of Darkness, not really taken seriously.
Almost as good as ..........2003-01-26
This movie is almost like living with the British. It ... from the moment it starts to the moment you you realize you're naked in the back yard burning in a bon fire. The barbarian brothers should have been ... after their first movie. The acting was almost as good as the new star wars movie. The only thing that kept me watching was the fact that I can't find the remote and I'm so tired that it's funny to watch mullets flap around. The fact that it made it onto TV much less video makes me want to ... myself.
The reason why it didn't get 5 star rating is because..........2002-06-07
While the plot and script of this movie is written very well, the reason why it didn't get a 5 star rating from me is because of the cast. The Barbarian brothers are cool, they deserved atleast a nomination to the oscars. The problem is due to the babes in this movie... there weren't any. They should have casted hotter chicks to off-set the actions. My favorite re-occuring line from this movie is "Can't find Second Gear...", if you watch it you'll understand. Paul and David should make a comback "Double Trouble 2", if I was a producer, I'd fund it!
Brother, This is the Most Huge Movie ever, brother!.......2002-05-11
This movie is seriously radical, daddy. The action is superb, the acting puts DeNiro, Nicholson, Brando and the like to shame, brother. The Barbarian Brothers were the finest comedic-action duo since Tango and Cash, brother. If you like mullets, Camaros, Oakland Raider half shirts, Oakley razorblades, monster trucks, boys with toys being boys, and all things that ROOL, this movie is for you, daddy. Buy this film now, for hours of entertianment. Check out Twin Sitters too, Daddy. I prey to God every day that this movie is rereleased on DVD. This truly is the finest movie EVER made. Possibly better than the entire Lord of The Rings Trilogy and without a doubt finer than anything put out by George Lucas.
