A sizable ratings hit in its debut season of 1975-76, One Day At A Time followed the formula established by producer Norman Lear in his other memorable television series (like All in the Family and Maude): It broke ground by discussing real-life social situations within the context of a friendly and funny sitcom. Bonnie Franklin was top-billed as Ann Romano, newly divorced after a 17-year marriage and raising two teenage daughters (newcomer Valerie Bertinelli and Mackenzie Phillips, then best known for her turn in American Graffiti</I>). In addition to the everyday struggles for financial stability and open communication with her children, Ann wrestles to achieve her own independence--which includes standing on equal terms in a relationship with her upstairs neighbor, David (Richard Masur). Making matters slightly more complicated is her apartment super, Duane Schneider (Pat Harrington in an Emmy and Golden Globe-winning performance), whose incessant snooping and blowhard talk are a source of considerable irritation to Ann.

One Day at a Time navigated the challenge of presenting comedy and realistic drama in the same program thanks to its talented cast and creative team, who addressed the social issues in a thoughtful manner without seeming preachy, and delivered genuine laughs that never stooped to slapstick or "hot button" issues (though the show's laugh track is particularly grating). All 15 episodes of the premiere season (which debuted as a mid-season replacement and rose to twelfth place in the ratings for the entire network year) are included in this double-disc set; longtime fans will be pleased to note that not only are the episodes uncut, but the One Day at a Time Reunion Special, which aired in 2005, is included as an extra (it's mentioned nowhere on the box cover art). All of the principal players contribute their memories of the show's successful run, including some honest discussion of Phillips' much-publicized drug problems. -- Paul Gaita

4 out of 5 stars An engaging sitcom, about real people just trying to get by.......2007-06-20

After 17 years of marriage, 34-year-old Ann Romano (Bonnie Franklin) has just divorced her husband and embarked on a new life with her teenage daughters, Julie (Mackenzie Phillips) and Barbara (Valerie Bertinelli). Having literally moved directly from the protection of a father to that of a husband, Ann is unprepared for the harsh realities that greet her in the outside world, from the job hunt (a prospective employer wants to hire her based on the promise of sexual liaisons) to her tiny apartment which she can barely fill with enough groceries to feed two growing girls.

To complicate things, there's David (Richard Masur), a 27-year-old attorney who handled Ann's divorce and is in love with her. She constantly fends off his advances, claiming their age difference and her recent divorce reasons she needs to stay single, though it scarcely daunts his devotion to her and her daughters. While Ann certainly appreciates having his emotional support during the times when she needs a friend, it's also difficult, as David is fairly well off and doesn't hesitate at writing a check for his friend. The last thing Ann needs or wants is to feel beholden to anyone...so why can't David ever understand?

The final blow is Schneider (Pat Harrington), the middle-aged building superintendent who fancies himself a ladies' man. He's constantly barging into Ann's apartment unannounced and busying himself with her personal concerns. But as annoying as he might be, Ann learns that Schneider does have a softer side, like when she throws a party and hurts his feelings by not even considering putting him on the guest list. Deep down, it seems, Schneider cares about Ann and the girls just as much as David.

Though this show came out in the mid-70s, it's still engaging and timely. It's no longer considered daring or innovating to show a divorced woman striking out on her own, unashamed to discuss real life with her daughters, the struggles faced by the lead characters still hold true today. Who among us *isn't* trying to get by, just one day at a time?

3 out of 5 stars This is It?.......2007-06-10

Not sure at times how to rate this because it can often be a good-great show but just as often..cringe-worthy; so let's dice, shall we? Bonnie Franklin gives several five star performances in fact most of the scripts that revolve around her are gold, she's great... because she can act. Which brings us to the girls; ugh. Valerie Bertinelli and Mackenzie Phillips are generally grating. Their conflicts are forced and the jokes are flat. I would say both are sorely miscast in this. I know your nostalgia may not let you see it; but from new eyes I can say these two are generally a mess. Schneider on the other hand is surprisingly perfect for this show. I say surprisingly because I didn't expect his role to be so necessary, but it is and Pat Harrington is a master craftsman as a fix it man, and an actor. David is the wild card. Often funny and explosive but just as often an unnecessary tool to move the scripts (which is what I would have thought Schneider would have become).

In short, this is a fair show in short bursts but is nothing near the "comic and 70's gem" the extra's or the five star reviews here make it out to be. It was an ok buy but you may want to take it one disc at a time.

5 out of 5 stars One Day At A Time - Season 1 review.......2007-06-10

Ann Romano (Bonnie Franklin)is a divorcee trying to start a new life with a little help from her temporary jobs and friendly yet nosey neighbors. Thrown in are two teenage daughters Julie (Mackenzie Phillips) and Barbara aka "Barbie" (Valerie Bartinelli) who are destined to make Annie's life more complicated.

Schneider, played by Pat Harrington Jr, is a superintendent by day and a ladies man (in the day or night) keeps a close eye on Annie and her brood as does Ann's sometime companion David Kane (Richard Masur). Look out for a young Ed Begley Jr and Suzanne Somers this season.

This 70's show has a contemporary theme, highlighting the daily strife of single people everywhere who strive to keep a healthy balance between love, work and home.

4 out of 5 stars Great trip down memory lane.......2007-05-31

This show is still funny. I am enjoying every episode, even more than i thought i would. I am grateful that the reunion was included, way to go! I will definitely buy season 2 but i hope Sony gets a few commentaries from the cast.

4 out of 5 stars Hard to believe its been so many years.......2007-05-30

The dvd is excellent. As I have not watched all of it yet, as I'm rationing it out, as studios do not seem to release dvd seasons close together, what I've seen of it, it is well worth the purchase.
Hard to believe its been so many years, and to see this show, with its style of fashion, and topics of its time, it brings back memories of fondness.
While the characters mother worries about her daughter hitchhiking, today's mothers have to watch other things too because of technology.
Makes one look back and think it was actually easier to raise children in that time period.
And the character David (which I didn't care for when I was younger), I do enjoy him now, along with his acting and timing of lines.
My opinion, this dvd is a good purchase at a fair price.

What happens when Stella Johnson and her daughter Dee come up against the unwelcome wagon of the Harper Valley P.T.A.? Hilarious comedy that's fun for the entire family!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Barbara Eden Was Excellant.......2007-04-21

This picture hit the theaters in 1978 starring Barbara Eden as Stella Johnson, Ronny Cox as Willis Newton and Nanette Fabray as Alice Finely. The pictured opens with the song that we come to know and hear along with a view of the school district where the whole thing gets started. As the song continues to play, they keep showing views of the school and the town. After the song is over Stella Johnson is in her house singing and dancing when her daughter Dee, comes home from school and can't even get in the front door. Therefore, Stella opens the door and Dee goes straight to her room without even speaking to her mom. Stella goes and checks on Dee and is given a letter that is address to her from the Harper Valley PTA. The letter states that if Stella doesn't change her ways they will take the proper measures to have her daughter expelled from school. Therefore, Stella and Alice sit down and have a nice long talk with Alice telling Stella every dirty secret that she has on every member of the Harper Valley PTA board. It just so happen that very afternoon the PTA was holding its annual meeting. Therefore, Stella and her daughter go to that PTA meeting and Stella was loaded with dirty secrets that were just waiting to come out. The next day when Dee comes home from school her entire front yard is covered with toilet paper. That's when Will Newton enters! Will is a construction worker who's building the schools new gym. Will helps Stella clean up her front yard and then later that night while Stella and Dee were eating someone throws a rock through the dining room window. Therefore, Stella goes to see Alice and now it's time for war with every member of the PTA. I like this movie because of the comedy and the acting of Barbara Eden. It was nice to see her in another role other then Jeanine. I give this movie 5 weasel stars.

4 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable and sweet.......2006-12-04

I loved the series back in the day. When I was a little girl, I idolized Barbara Eden. I watched Jeannie whenever I could (which wasn't easy back in the day of one black and white tv with rabbit ears!). I still remember my parents turning it off because of bad reception and I was so upset because I'd never seen the episode in question.

Anyway, Barbara Eden is charming in this. I look at the young crop of actresses today and very few of them have the charm of Barbara Eden. I personally think that Days of Our Lives should have hired her to play "Jo Johnson" after Joy Garrett died - the physical resemblence is amazing, and Barbara has the same sweet vulnerability that Joy had.

5 out of 5 stars HARPER VALLEY PTA.......2006-03-24

I have always loved this movie. It came out when I was just a kid and at that time it was a little raunchy. I am so glad it is available on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Comedy at its best .......2006-03-04

Comedy at its finest, today's comedy have nothing over this.
I love this movie so much.

3 out of 5 stars cute fluff-ball comedy.......2005-12-20

HARPER VALLEY P.T.A. is a cute comedy, based on the chart-topping country song from Jeannie C. Riley (written by Tom T. Hall).

Barbara Eden plays the vivacious Mrs Stella Johnson, who walks to the beat of her own drum, much to the horror of her strait-laced neighbours and the members of the Harper Valley P.T.A. One afternoon Stella's daughter Dee (Susan Swift) comes home from school with a letter from the secretary of the P.T.A. which threatens to expell Dee if Stella does not conform. Stella and her wacky best friend Alice (Nanette Fabray) decide that a little revenge is on the cards...!

This film is very much a one-note caper comedy, but the performances of Barbara Eden and Nanette Fabray are so wonderful that they greatly enliven the limitations of the material. Susan Swift is lovely as Dee, and the formidable president of the P.T.A. is played by Audrey Christie in her best fashion. Also featuring Louis Nye, Ronny Cox, Pat Paulsen and John Fiedler.

HBO's new DVD release contains a crisp anamorphic print.

<I>The Band Wagon</I> (1953) marked the culmination of a series of near-autobiographical pictures Fred Astaire made for MGM following his return from premature retirement in the late '40s. Astaire plays Tony Hunter, a fading film star (his big hit: <I>Flying Down to Panama</I>) who decides to return to his former glory, the Broadway stage. (In 1931, Astaire had starred on Broadway with sister Adele in <I>The Band Wagon</I>, a revue that lent some of its songs to this film.) His playwright-songwriter friends (Nanette Fabray and Oscar Levant) hook him up with Broadway's hottest director, Jeffrey Cordova (a nicely hammy Jack Buchanan), who proves that the "new" theater traditions can be an awkward fit with the old. Hunter also finds himself at odds with his prima ballerina leading lady (Cyd Charisse), one of his chief worries being that she seems a little tall. Along the way, producer Arthur Freed, director Vincente Minnelli, choreographer Michael Kidd, and songwriters Howard Dietz and Arthur Schwartz treat us to some quintessential MGM numbers: Astaire's solo ode "By Myself," the flashy arcade romp "A Shine on Your Shoes," Astaire and Charisse's romantic duet "Dancing in the Dark," the faux-German drinking song "I Love Louisa," the manic trio "Triplets" (with Astaire, Fabray, and Buchanan in matching baby outfits), the Mickey Spillane-esque "Girl Hunt Ballet," and the classic show-biz anthem "That's Entertainment." Even if its ending and obligatory romance fall a little flat, <I>The Band Wagon</I> is one of the classic backstage musicals, a grandiose MGM spectacle that also manages to poke some fun at how grandiose MGM pictures had become. <I>--David Horiuchi</I>

You sent the product to the wrong address where it was returned to you as undeliveraable. We had typed in that it should be sent to our winter address and not our home address in PA. So, you got it back and alledgedly have given us credit on our MC. Since then we have responded to your e-mails and requested that you re-enter the order and send it to our current quarters to no avail. This has not been a good experience. Fortunately, TCM was playing the movie the other morning and we copied it on VHS and we have found someone who will copy the particular scene that we need to practice for our show onto another tape and we don't need you now.

Movie miracle. Folks will still be watching this film in another fifty-someodd years to remember or discover the innocent joy that was "golden-age" Hollywood entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars The Band Wagon.......2006-07-08

I'm not a big fan of musicals, but I've always made an exception for this one. Fred Astaire plays Tony Hunter, a Hollywood song-and-dance man who comes to New York to star in a Broadway flop. Cyd Charise agrees to be his dancing partner. Neither thinks the other wants him/her in the show, so they don't get along very well - at first. Not only does Astaire get the show on the right track, he makes things right between him and Charise. They also dance fantastically together. Jack Buchanan is brilliant in a minor role. The great music by Comden and Green, with marvelous songs by Dietz and Schwartz, are what make the movie exceptional: BY MYSELF, THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT, DANCING IN THE DARK, I GUESS I'LL HAVE TO CHANGE MY PLANS, TRIPLETS, I LOVE LOUISA, and, best of all, A SHINE ON YOUR SHOES all became standards in the Great American Songbook. The movie is a great earful as well as an eyeful.

5 out of 5 stars Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex.......2007-06-21

In Curtiz's handsome production, historical accuracy is sacrificed to achieve an intelligent and intriguing character piece, shot in glorious Technicolor. The film admirably showcases its two stars, whose on-screen chemistry never hints at their off-screen disdain for each other. Davis is forced to stretch more in her part, and bravely foregoes any vanity in playing the spinster queen, while Flynn's Essex fits the actor's breezy, effortless charisma like a glove. Another fine old chestnut from Hollywood's Golden Age.

4 out of 5 stars Davis and Flynn or David and Goliath- the winner is..........2007-02-18

"The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex" was the final of four great film released in 1939 for Bette Davis. Never in the history of film, before or since, has one actress worked so hard to such high results in one year. From the modern dress tragedienne in "Dark Victory" to the pinched austere "Old Maid" and the hysterical Carlotta in "Juarez", Davis could do no wrong. The ultimate sign of prestige was to play royalty and so she took on Elizabeth the first.

The film was based on a verbose Maxwell Anderson play. The film opens the play up with an unconvincing section on the warfields of Ireland but the bulk of the film is set in Elizabeth's court which Davis dominates impressively. Davis had hoped to have Laurence Olivier with her but Warner Brothers had Errol Flynn under contract and he was big box office so he got the role of the Earl of Essex. It was a mistake. Against Davis's glamour skimping, overwrought queen, Flynn, while looking great, has the presence of a randy high school lead. Essex may have been an opportunist which Flynns easily suggests but his delivery of the lines is often woeful and one can't help feeling that Davis tries to compensate for his inadequacies. Her Queen may seem mannered but she claws at the air with her left hand and brilliantly conveys the problems of being a monarch first and woman second. Surely her performance became the blueprint for others like Glenda Jackson who later played the role. Even if you do not like Davis, she does convey the authority of a monarch. Who else in Hollywood in 1939 could have achieved this?

Every other aspect of the film is on a grand scale - the technicolour photography, spectacular sets, a Korngold score which has an epic quality and, above all, the costumes. Davis held out for the correct costumes and they are magnificent. The supporting cast is excellent too, including the beautiful Olivia de Havilland, who plays with Davis very well. Donald Crisp, in particular, is very good.

The DVD print is excellent and there is a worthwhile short documentary on the film with Nannette Fabray appearing. She played a lady in waiting in the film and has a good scene with Davis which she recalls vividly. There is a cartoon and newsreel which are OK but the technicolour short film, which mixes English royalty in the vein of the film with singing cowboys and rodeos is pretty hard to stomach. A young and handsome John Payne stars.

The DVD is very good value if purchased as part of the Errol Flynn Signature Collection, an odd inclusion really because Davis's art exposes Flynn's immaturity.

The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex

The Movie
Bette Davis, Errol Flynn, Vincent Price, and Olivia De Havillan these names alone make you simply wish to see this movie. It is a powerful movie showing a deep chemistry between Davis and Flynn. IT shows the love between Elizabeth and Essex. It shows the struggle between politics and human nature. It asks the question should a Queen share her throne with a man who may or may not be in it for power. Is love really the cure all. It is a movie that pulls you in, with such great actors that u must watch

The Video:
This movie was made in 1939 it does undoubtedly show its age. It has some light flicker on the picture. It is of course full screen since at that time that was the shape of the theaters screens. It is very watchable it has the standard color and look of the 1930's films. It has a very Wizard of Oz look and feel to it as do most of the 1930's films.

The Audio:
No 5.1 here just 2.1 but you don't notice it anyhow it's not a movie made to make the walls shake.

The Extras
Warner at the Movies
First you get Leonard Maltin so how they think we need to know what he thinks but at least you can skip this though it does explain the other extras

Dark Victory Trailer
Shameless plug.

News Reel
Movie Tones News Reel
There because it was there in the original theater release.

The Royal Rodeo
A nice short movie shot on the old set of robin hood a musical western with the voice of Jiminy Cricket (Cliff Edwards) and John Payne (Miracle on 34th street fame).

Old Glory
Porky pig propaganda short about the flag and American history directed by Tex Avery.

1 out of 5 stars Technicolor terribly out of registration!.......2006-07-09

This is so incredibly frustrating -- this film was one of the most beautiful and lavish Technicolor productions done (pre-Gone With The Wind) when it was released in November of 1939. And while the DVD attests to its glory, many, many shots are terribly out of register -- the Technicolor having a "3D without the glasses" look. What was Warner Brothers thinking to release it on DVD in this state?? Did they think that no one would notice? One shot will be perfectly gorgeous and the next shot is halloed. Better not to have released it than to have sent it out like this. To true movie lovers it's unwatchable.

4 out of 5 stars Bette is a Hoot.......2006-05-08

I am a huge lifelong fan of Bette, but her performance here, while brave from the perspective of filming in glamour-era 1939 with the unattractive make-up, hairline, etc, is so mannerered it bellows "I AM acting now!" The purposely deepened, flat tone of voice and the constant twitching, clutching at jewelry, necklines, hands clenching --- and that left elbow never stopped flapping----like a helicopter ! It was incredibaly distracting, as was the lack of chemistry between the stars. And every now and then, they would slip into Hollywood-ese and call each other "dahling."
Great to watch once----as is The Virgin Queen, her 1955 version, in which she calls Joan Collins a strumpet.

One of the greatest comedians of early television, Sid Caesar hasn't had his work shown in perennial reruns, so it's especially gratifying to see a collection of his classic sketches released on video, with Caesar himself introducing the material. Besides being a truly gifted comic, Caesar benefited from having some brilliant supporting players, including Carl Reiner, Imogene Coca, and Nanette Fabray. Some of his illustrious writers, including Neil Simon, Woody Allen, and Mel Brooks, appear in interviews setting up the sketches. The sketches themselves include some all-time classics such as Caesar and company playing the figurines populating a medieval town clock (a brilliant bit partly written by Neil Simon and his brother, Danny, who reminisce after the sketch). And of course there are some of Caesar's brilliant parodies of foreign films, in which he and Carl Reiner took the bizarre art of dialect doubletalk to new levels. Caesar bristled with a manic energy, and his brilliant portrayals of characters ranging from a loudmouth suburban husband to a 1950s teen idol are all the more amazing when one considers that all this dazzling work was done without a net, with no second chances, on live TV. <I>--Robert J. McNamara</I>

5 out of 5 stars This is Live Television at It's Absolute Best........2001-08-23

Watching this collection is a revelation. This is "live" television from nearly fifty years ago and it is still falling-down funny. The word "genius" is overused but it certainly applies to the men and women who created these classics of sketch comedy: Carl Reiner, Mel Brooks, Larry Gelbart, Mel Tolkin, Neal and Danny Simon, Woody Allen, Imogene Coca, Nanette Fabray, Howard Morris, and, especially, Sid Caesar. The great thing about this collection is that, unlike other compilations which feature only excerpts, all of the sketches here are presented in their entirety. All of the classics are here: "The Clock," "This is Your Story," the "From Here to Eternity" spoof and many others. If you really feel like having a good time, this is the place to be!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Sketch Comedy from Caesar's "Your Show of Shows"!.......2001-08-17

Sid Caesar was the most talented comic performer of the live television era with his classic "Your Show of Shows" and "Caesar's Hour." Caesar also had the greatest ensemble cast of all time with the late Imogene Coca, Carl Reiner, Howard Morris, and others. Add to that a writing staff that included, at various times, Reiner, Mel Brooks, Woody Allen, Neil Simon and Larry Gelbart. The volumes in this DVD collection include some of the best comedy sketches from both shows, digitally remastered from the original kinescopes. Caesar picked the sketches personally and interviews with the cast members and writers are used as introductions. Sketches included on this first volume, "The Magic of Live TV," includes "The Commuters in '7 Dwarfs Bet,'" "The Professor in 'Board Rooms of hollywood,'" "The Five Dollar Date," "Sid Plays Sax with Benny Goodman," "The Clock," "A Fella Needs a Girl," "The Haircuts--'So Rare' and 'Flippin','" and my favorite, "This Is Your Story." Thank goodness these priceless shows have been preserved. They deserve to be as well known as episodes of "I Love Lucy" and "The Honeymooners."

5 out of 5 stars All time favorite Christmas movie.......2006-12-17

I first saw this movie several years ago and then it was shown on TV every year for the next few years. We have definitely gone downhill from then. The current shows are worthless and show no imagination or charm. Fred Astaire was at his best in this charming show. He shows us what the true spirit of Christmas is. I try to watch this every year but I'm afraid one of these years my videotape will break! Please, someone, issue this on DVD!

4 out of 5 stars loved it.......2006-12-05

I, too, liked this movie. I agree with the other person that is should be made available on DVD.

4 out of 5 stars This Underrated and Underappreciated Christmas Movie Is Cute And Should Be On DVD!.......2005-10-13

I saw The Man In The Santa Clasu Suit for the first time last December of 2004 and I really liked it and thought it was cute and charming. The movie has three segments and stars Fred Astaire as Santa Claus who appears to be masquerading as several different people, a jeweler, a costume store owner, a cop, etc. In each segmet 3 different men go into the costume store in which they all buy Santa suits. One guy is played by the guy who played Radar in the classic TV MASH, Gary Borgdoff? Sorry, I don't know how to spell his last name. He plays a guy who is in love with his best friend and neighbor who is a beautiful fashion model but also interested in her is a jet setting millionare. Another segment has Burt Convy as a busy man who works for a very demaning politician and his work takes him away from is wife and young son who is beginning to get angry at his Dad for broken promises. And Another segement has a man who was once a successful chef and is played by John Byner who has fallen on hardtimes and is now an alcoholic and homeless, and after he finds the gun that some crooks had used in a robbery and thrown out but he is now being chased by the crooks and breaks into the house of a wealthy couple played by Harold Gould and Nanette Fabray and tries to rob them and also in the ouse is the couples bratty grandchildren and their butler (who if I remember correctly was also their nephew) he tries to rob them so he can get money to get out of town and away from the dangerous criminals who are after him but the man and his wife realize that he isn't really a bad guy and is a sad broken, damaged man and that desperation made him try to rob them and they try to help him. This couple played by Nannette Fabray and Harold Gould are very funny when they keep breaking into song and dance. It seems they are ex-Vaudville entertainers who just can't forget their days as a successful Vaudville act! this is a cute Christmas movie and I liked all of the segments but epsecially the one with Burt Convy and the one with Harold Gould and Nanette Fabray and I wish this movie was on DVD!

5 out of 5 stars THE MAN IN THE SANTA CLAUS SUIT.......2004-03-14

IT IS JUST A NICE FILM WITH A REAL CHRISTMAS FEELING. LOOKS VERY DATED BUT IT JUST MAKES YOU FEEL GOOD WELL WORTH WATCHING

5 out of 5 stars We love it, but not because it is a classic........2003-12-17

This is a classic "B" Christmas movie. It has 3 happy endings, Radar from MASH, Fred, and the now deceased Bert Convey taking endless phone calls on a full sized telephone in his brief case. We watch it every year, noting how many times Radar says the name Einstein, and counting phone calls. Don't expect a classic like "A Christmas Story", but if you can get into the "spirit", it is wonderful fun.

Product Description

The story of the ill-fated love between the aging Queen Elizabeth I and the ambitious Earl of Essex. Their tumultuous on-again off-again affair was punctuated by Essex's unstoppable ambition to assume the throne of England. Having won several important battles, Essex's popularity among the masses soared. Fearing the Earl's power over the people, Elizabeth sends the Earl on a disastrous campaign in Ireland. Returning defeated, with his troops behind him, Essex marched into London and demanded the heirless Queen share her throne with him. Agreeable at first, the crafty Elizabeth waited for the army to disband and reluctantly locked up her lover in The Tower.

Elizabethan period pieces. Most of all I love all those great movies from 1939. However, I could not stand this boring mellow-
drama. It went on & on. I really feel bad about this when I see how much everybody else liked it.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular!.......2005-01-24

'Elizabeth and Essex' is a magnificent, sweeping epic film. The screenplay, based in Maxwell Anderson's award-winning play of tragic love is beautiful prose. The art direction and cinematogaphy are near perfect. The music and sound direction are flawless. Bette Davis give bravura performance as the legendary queen; she shines brilliantly. The supporting cast is just right. Highly recommended for an evening's enjoyment.

3 out of 5 stars Not the Typical Flynn/De Havilland Film. .......2004-12-31

Flynn shows little interest in de Havilland as this is "The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex", which, personally, looks better to me when I turn the color off!

De Havilland, who always looks great in what ever shes in, does her best in the short role Warners gave her. Her scene with Flynn is the best in the film, in my opinion. Flynn made up a title for the film "The Knight and the Lady", when Davis objected, the writers made up the present title. The finale scene between Davis and Flynn is the only pointless scene.

I think this is a pretty good film, Flynn does an excellent job. Davis only milidly boring. I'm sorry, that's MY oppinion. Her proformance is perfect but she is constently moving.

Of course the script is only flaued only by deHavilland's sickly role, she needed to have a more drawn role than the ten scenes she has. I like Davis's speech on how a Queen must give up everything for her people. Flynn, who does an excellent job at being not intimidated by Davis, seems a little uncomfortable.

I thing that the only real flaw in this film is deHavillands lack of partisipation, they really could have used her to bring up ticket sales back in 1939 and with that it might have beat many of the films from that great year in film history.

All in all not a bad film, Davis is a bit anti-Flynn but the script is great and the cast is really a dream cast! I wished they would make films like this nowadays.
Really its worthy 4 1/2 out of 5.

5 out of 5 stars Bette Davis' Best Work: A Well Made Historic Romance.......2004-02-12

Bette Davis perhaps did better work, many would argue. But I find that her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth I in this 1939 film was a strong performance. She was such a good actress, she truly focused her energy into becoming the historic queen. She looks the part- white rouge, red hair, dominant and unbreakable spirit and strength. She must have studied the actual Queen Elizabeth pretty good to portray her on film. Bette Davis was doing some good stuff in the movies at this time, even if she had not yet risen to stardom. She had appeared in Jezebel at this time, after being rejected as Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With The Wind. Jezebel is another great performance as she potrays a strong and passionate Southern belle in the Civil War Era. But this film takes place in London during the last years of Queen Elizabeth's reign (1690's). Robert Devereux, Queen Elizabeth's love, is played by Errol Flynn. Errol Flynn, a notorious playboy and ladies's man at the time, reminded people of Douglas Fairbanks. Both actors specialized in playing handsome and heroic romantic leads, swashbucklers who wielded swords to fight the enemy and win the heart of a fair maiden. Errol Flynn as Roberto Devereux is the perfect choice. This film is well made, looks good and is very 30's. If you're a film buff for movies of the World War II Era or a Bette Davis fan, this movie is a real treat.

This drama is fictional. Historic reality was sacrificed to make for a sensational drama. This film was adapted from a play. There has also been an opera about this, written by Donizetti- Roberto Devereux. In reality, Queen Elizabeth never engaged in a romantic affair with the naval captain, Robert Devereux. Devereux, a war hero (he had defeated the Spanish Armada) was a favorite of Queen Elizabeth, but she never openly declared her love for him, nor did Devereux for her. In truth, Devereux was married. But legend has it that she loved Robert Devereux. He, on the other hand, plotted against her and attempted to remove her from the throne in a rebellion in London. He had seen her in a state of undress and one thing lead to another and he was executed. Queen Elizabeth died about a year after his execution, which she had hoped to prevent. It was possible she loved him as a friend or if she did love him, she could never hope for anything other than friendship, as she had with others, most notably with Robert Dudley, the Earl of Leicester, who most scholars believe was the man she was truly in love with. Queen Elizabeth guarded her virginity to remain Englad's greatest queen. She knew that if she married and had children, she would lose her powers. "No one has loved England more than I" she would say and she has gone down in history as the greatest of England's rulers. During her reign, Shakespeare produced his plays.

This film is great to watch and I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in this historic period and who are fans of both Erroly Flynn and Bette Davis with those unforgettable eyes.
