Not only did movie mogul Robert Evans produce some of the greatest movies ever made--<I>Chinatown</I>, <I>The Godfather</I>, and <I>Rosemary's Baby</I>, as well as huge hits like <I>Love Story</I> and <I>Urban Cowboy</I>--but he defined Hollywood high life, dating models and movie stars and, eventually, succumbing to cocaine addiction and scandal. You don't live like this without having a huge ego, and that ego is gloriously on display in <I>The Kid Stays in the Picture</I>, a brilliantly dishy documentary on Evans. What puts this cunning compilation of movie clips and digitally manipulated photos over the top is that Evans himself narrates the movie with a riveting mix of narcissistic self-aggrandizement and cool self-assessment. There are no interviews with other people to give any outside perspective on this man's life; for the duration of the movie we are plunged into Evan's own head, and it's funny, sad, and always fascinating. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>
Description
Robert Evans became head of production at a major Hollywood studio at age 24. Took a studio from worst to first. And brought to the screen a phenomenal string of hits that includes Chinatown and The Godfather. He lived fast. Lived large. Lost it all. Then rose to prominence again. And now the inside-Hollywood story is revealed by ROBERT EVANS in this dazzling show-all movie that's narrated by Evans in his inimitable showman's style!
Customer Reviews:
What a Character!.......2007-02-20
Robert Evans has had a more interesting life than any character in his movies, and that is no small feat considering Evans is the man who produced Love Story, Chinatown, the Godfather and many other blockbusters and classics.
This film is a fantastic portrait of an almost incredible man, one that anyone --even those who are not particularly interested in Hollywood-- will enjoy. A spectacular documentary! Highly recommended.
THE ONE AND ONLY ROBERT EVANS.......2006-09-24
Robert Evans is a creation that could only be conjured up in hollywood. The career this guy has had is nothing short of amazing. It just goes to show you how far looks, charm, and more that a little bullsh#t can take you. I loved this DVD, I mean Evans has no shame and he is what he is and you have to admire the guys candor, i mean he may be a world class as#hole, but he does it with such aplomb and you have to love the fact he is the only white man on earth as tan as George Hamilton, how each of them hasn't succombed to melanoma is beyond me. Highly recommended.
This kid loved the movie!.......2006-07-05
I first saw this movie on television it was one of the movies shown at the Tribeca Film Festival. I couldn't take my eyes off of it. Truly loved it.
An entertaining exploration of a fascinating Hollywood personality.......2005-12-29
This could also have been entitled "The Comeback Kid." Though the initial purpose of this documentary on the life and career of famed producer Robert Evans was perhaps to act as a nice coda to a colorful riches to rags story, in fact it has served to put Evans back in the public eye and revive his career as a producer. Only five years ago Evans was largely a forgotten man, but today he has a number of projects underway. No doubt this is in part due to having his various legal problems behind him, but clearly his memoir, which was then made into this documentary, played a major role.
THE KID STAYS IN THE PICUTRE is not your typical documentary. For one thing, the only person who talks to the camera is the subject of the film. This is hardly a mea culpa or apologia. It is more of a warts and all self-affirmation of everything Evans has experienced in his career. Much is left out. There is surprisingly little detail on his love life excepting his romance with Ali McGraw, which was clearly the dominant relationship of his life. But there is a frank acknowledgment of many errors made combined with an attitude that could be summed up, "Well, I made a mess, but at least it was my mess."
The heart of the film concerns Evans's triumphs as a producer. Certainly few producers not named Weinstein have been involved in so many remarkable films. ROSEMARY'S BABY, LOVE STORY, THE GODFATHER, CHINATOWN, MARATHON MAN, and THE COTTON CLUB are only a few of the many films he was involved on. There are many fascinating stories about many of these, though for me the most fascinating was the behind the scenes footage taken during the filming of ROSEMARY'S BABY. Another great moment is the short film that Evans made for the corporate powers that be who wanted to pull the plug on THE GODFATHER.
Almost as important as Evans as a character in the film is his beautiful home. There is shot after shot of the grounds and the film finally ends with the only contemporary shot of Evans in the documentary, showing him sitting inside simply being Robert Evans. If the film has a nadir, it comes when Evans was forced to sell his beloved home to a wealthy foreigner. When he wanted to repurchase the home the man wouldn't agree to do so. But Evans's friend Jack Nicholson took matters in his own hands and flew to visit the man, literally getting on his knees to beg him to sell the house back to Evans. He relented and one of the most touching moments in the movie was the camera zooming in on the welcome home card that Nicholson wrote Evans.
All in all, film fans will find this to be an interesting and highly entertaining documentary. Evans has had a colorful life, making his share of mistakes, suffering his share of both really great and truly awful luck, but sticking it out. And partly because of this film, the kid did manage to stay in the picture, and his name will unquestionably appear on a few more films in the years to come.
and the point is???????.......2005-08-14
I just didn't get it. The movie was painfully boring. The only remotely redeeming aspect was some interesting cinematography.

Ira Levin's scary novel about forced conformity in a small Connecticut town made for this compelling 1975 thriller. Katharine Ross stars as a city woman who moves with her husband to Stepford and is startled by how perpetually happy many of the local women seem to be. Her search for an answer reveals a plot to replace troublesome real wives with more accommodating fake ones (not unlike the alien takeover in <I>Invasion of the Body Snatchers</I>). The closer she gets to the truth, the more danger she faces--not to mention the likelihood that the men in town intend to replace her as well. Screenwriter William Goldman (<I>Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid</I>) and director Bryan Forbes (<I>King Rat</I>) made this a taut, tense semiclassic with a healthy dose of satiric wit. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

You must obey!.......2007-03-30
I really enjoyed this movie, very good acting. I liked the "slow" place of the beginning of the movie because it really gives a feel that things are bucolic (unlike most movies today where everything has to keep moving all the time.) While I was watching the movie, there were several places where I would say "Well, why are you doing that?" But right after the movie, I read one of the movie reviews on the back of the box that said "it is wonderfully ridiculous black humor satire." Then I realized that when you view this movie not so much as a story where ALL men are evil and ALL women are good but as social commentary but especially as symbolic, (especially I.F. Homemaker) everything makes perfect sense and the movie was just wonderful.
One needs to look at this movie as a commentary on how we each lose our individuality by a group of controlling men at the top of our power structure in which there is an incredibly strong pressure to conform, hence the fake smiling people who go around saying and believing that everything would be just wonderful in our consumer society if (in this case) women would just conform as noted in the final scene.
Oh no! The big bad MALE is going to get me!!!!.......2007-01-28
As a feminist, I hate movies that portray women as victims who struggle futile against the big bad evil MAN.
There are no good men in this movie. There are no evil women.
Such portrayals of women are demeaning. We are human beings, just like men. We are capable of evil. Men are capable of good.
Yes, some men would turn their wives into robots if they could, but so would some women! And I find it ridiculous that not one man stood up for his beloved partner. I find it ridiculous that not one woman was capable of true evil. Are we puppets?
It also bothers me that if these women are so strong and powerful, that they are helpless against the big bad men. The message seems to be that we can't save ourselves. We are just doomed to be what men want us to be.
I hate this attitude. Men are not all powerful. Women are human beings, not saints.
Two stars, though, for capturing the fears of women everywhere.
A woman's desperate attempt to free herself from male domination.......2006-12-18
At the urging of her husband Walter (Peter Masterson), aspiring photographer and obviously less-than-full-figured Joanna Eberhart (Katherine Ross) becomes an unwilling resident of Stepford -- a town of apparent marital bliss. Uxorial devotion strikes the former woman's libber with suspicion. Befriending a wild and unconventional new resident named Bobbie Markowe (Paula Printiss), they attempt to uncover what appears to be a misogynic plot to subjugate beautiful wives. After a weekend nuptial renewing retreat, Bobbie returns as another ultra-domesticated Stepford housewife. This sends Joanna on a high-adrenaline quest for immediate answers that ultimately brings her face to face with a revelation of epic proportions.
Scenes include brief violence, emphasis on female anatomy, and discussions of marital coitus.
Movie quote: "If I'm wrong I'm insane. And if I'm right, it's worse than if I'm wrong."

Aside from boasting one of the great evocative titles in film history, <I>Séance on a Wet Afternoon</I> (1964) works up a surplus of dread with a minimum of devices. Kim Stanley was nominated for an Oscar® for her performance as a London medium who bulldozes her weak husband (Richard Attenborough) into kidnapping a little girl; the goal is not ransom money, but a chance to prove Stanley's clairvoyant gifts to the police, and thus bring her the respect she has always deserved. The suspense is keen, yet the movie's real achievement is detailing the stifling marriage between two deluded, dependent middle-aged people. Attenborough is heartbreaking as a human doormat, and Stanley's Method intensity brings the movie into a genuinely unnerving realm (she didn't work in movies again for nearly two decades). The story was remade, with intriguing changes, by Japanese director Kiyoshi Kurosawa as <I>Séance</I> (a.k.a. <I>Korei</I>, 2000). <I>--Robert Horton</I>
Description
Fraught with the kind of tension that makes breathing difficult, this frighteningly eerie story of a middle-aged couple unable to cope with the loss of their own child has won numerous awards and is now available for the first time on DVD. Myra (Kim Stanley, The Right Stuff) is a mentally unstable medium that believes if she kidnaps a child of wealthy parents, she can prove her psychic abilities by 'finding' the child. Award-winning performances from Stanley as the disturbed Myra and Richard Attenborough (Jurassic Park) as Billy the meek, apologetic husband combine with tension packed location shooting to make this mid-sixties thriller an enduring portrait of madness.

Compelling........2006-07-19
Séance on a Wet Afternoon (Bryan Forbes, 1964)
Bryan Forbes' name may be on the marquee, but in retrospect, it is the style of producer and star Richard Attenborough that is writ large over this film. Presaging Attenborough's magnum opus, Magic, Séance on a Wet Afternoon travels down a lot of the same roads-- perhaps with not as much satisfaction, but as effectively in places.
Attenborough plays Philip Savage, the henpecked but well-meaning husband of Myra (Kim Stanley), who desperately wants to believe she's a medium. She is having difficulty overcoming the death of their son Arthur, whom Myra is convinced is speaking to her from beyond the grave. In order to prove herself-- make a name for herself, as it were, in the world of the mundane-- Myra hatches a nefarious plot into which she draws her husband-- kidnapping a child, then approaching the family as someone with helpful information about their missing daughter.
Watching this film over forty years after its initial release, it's easy to see how much influence it's had over the years; its particular plot twists have found their way into films ranging from Attenborough's own later works to wonderful (and, I'm sure, not-so-wonderful) films from around the world. (Certain scenes should especially put you in mind of Hideo Nakata's finest film, Chaos, for example.) While Séance on a Wet Afternoon never reaches the cinematic heights to be found when Attenborough got behind the camera himself-- the film even devolves to melodrama now and then-- it's still quite a satisfying little journey into the world of psychological suspense. The DVD suffers from a relatively nasty version of the same sound-mastering problem that plagues most DVDs (the soundtrack is mixed much louder than the dialogue track), but that shouldn't stop you from giving it a spin; you'll just find yourself using your remote's volume control a good deal more than usual. *** ½
Oh, You Gotta Rent This !.......2006-05-12
I came across with this movie all by chance and it certainly became one of my all-time favorites. Beyond everything else this movie is SOOOO well-done. It truly satisfies in every aspect. The economy that the director used in telling this story i think is just perfect.
It's sad, it's haunting, it's gripping, thick with magnificent ambient dread and it features 2 mind-blowing performances by the leads. It's really hard to decide which actor is better but i'd say you HAVE TO SEE Kim Stanley's superb work to believe it! I was blown away!
If you like off-beat, eerie movies with solid stories and tour de force acting you surely will love this one! Do not hesitate to rent it!
"Tell me you love me...".......2005-11-16
This is an exquisite little movie, made unforgettable by its two talented stars. Kim Stanley plays Myra, a woman who became delusional years ago when her only child was still born. She now claims that she's a psychic medium and that Arthur, her son, speaks to her from beyond. She's married to Billy (Richard Attenborough), a weak and brokenhearted man who knows his wife is mentally ill, but is unable to help her. They decide to kidnap the daughter of a wealthy couple, collect the ransom, and then Myra will offer her psychic services to the couple and heroically "find" the little girl. Billy knows it's a bad plan, and he's even more worried when Arthur "tells" Myra that he wants the little girl to join him.
Set in a big, dark house in London, the movie is certainly creepy and suspenseful, but more than anything, it is achingly sad. We feel for the suffering parents of the girl, for Myra, who doesn't know she is insane, and especially for Billy, who has lost control of his life completely. Richard Attenborourgh's performance is a master class in the art of acting. A sobering, insightful study of two unhappy people.

Oh what a tangled web we weave.......2005-11-14
Myra (Kim Stanley) knows she is distend for greatness and the second rate psychic she seems to be. She enlists (heavily influences) her week-willed husband Billy (Richard Attenborough) into a scheme that seems perfectly innocent; they will barrow a child Amanda (Judith Donner) and then Myra will use her psychic ability to find the child for the parents. Myra gets fame, her husband will get a new car and everyone will be happy.
Every thing will go as planned if you do not take in account that there is something strange going on. And it is snowballing.
The film was shot in black and white which gives it a spooking and depressing feel. There is sixties English background music including "Hear my Prayer" Written by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. Then again there are plenty of places where they do not play any background and the natural sounds or lack of can also be spooky.
Kim Stanley was nominated for two Oscars - one for portraying the medium with a secret.
A wicked little gem of a thriller.......2005-09-04
This movie is more a psychological/psycho study than anything. However it adds up to one seriously taut thriller in the end.
Everything about this movie is believable, even the acting.
The plot is simple. Blackmail. But the ends that the blackmail is for is a little twisted than most other films.
It's the details that set this movie aside from others of it's sort.
Scary thoughout, this is a good little suprise to watch on a dark and stormy night.

Arm and a leg for few laughs.......2007-03-11
With the late great legendary comedian Peter Sellers receiving top billing, I patiently endured three quarters of WRONG ARM OF THE LAW. To the point of embarassment, the Australian IPO gang repeatedly intercepts loot from established British criminals. Is there supposed to be an irony to being fooled more than a half dozen times by the same routine? During the last quarter of the movie there is a not-quite redeeming sting operation devolving to a comedy of errors.
Mob boss Pearly Gates (Sellers) adeptly demonstrates his flair for British and French accents -- even providing humorous inspiration for Martin Short's later role as Franck in FATHER OF THE BRIDE (1991). But primarily, Sellers portrays an eloquent organizer -- significantly more refined than Inspector Clouseau in THE PINK PANTHER. If you are interested in seeing criminals make light of the "Bobbies" don't part with more than five bucks or you've been robbed.
Movie quote: "These are some of the finest pieces to be found in London." "Well, then I shall have to go to Paris."
The Wrong Arm of the Law.......2007-03-11
This film really shows the versatility of Peter Sellers and the truly magical nature of his acting. This is a light hearted comedy and a treasure to watch. The quality of the film is superb even though it is based on a black and white source. Frankly you forget that it is in black and white format.
A Lesser Sellers Effort.......2004-08-05
An entertaining cops and robbers yarn, however, if you are looking for Peter Sellers in his full comic range don't look here. It appears that he is passing the time until "Dr. Strangelove came his way. That said, Sellers fans who are familiar with his greater work will be entertained by this lesser endeavor.
Sparkling English Comedy.......2004-03-19
"The Wrong Arm of the Law" is one of the last British comedies from a period that many consider to be a "golden age" for the genre. It gave Peter Sellers another wonderful role as Cockney gang-leader, Pearly Gates, who often masquerades as "Monsieur Jules", haute couturier to rich and very gullible ladies. Of course, Pearly's real career is organizing robberies for his gang, none of whom seem to have the IQ of a potato ! Lately, however, Pearly and other London-area crooks are having a problem--they successfully pull off a heist, only to be ambushed by a trio of "policemen" who are more interested in the stolen goods than making arrests. Of course, these "bobbies" are crooks themselves.
It takes a while for Pearly and the other gang leaders to figure out what's going on, not to mention an embarrassed Scotland Yard, who put scene-stealing Lionel Jeffries on the case. Sellers and Jeffries decide to declare a "truce", and agree to cooperate in trying to catch these interlopers. Is nothing sacred ? Can a thief not make a dishonest living any more ? Can the police not trust a "man in uniform" ?
The film is blessed with a witty script and many amusing sequences. Other British character actors add to the fun. Bernard Cribbins is "Nervous", another gang leader. Can you imagine a less-likely gangster than Mr. Cribbins ? No--that's what makes him so hilarious. John LeMesurier is on hand as Scotland Yard's incredulous chief, unsure as to whether Sellers or Jeffries pose the greater threat to London ! Look out for the scene where all the crooks have a "union meeting" to become organized--that's Dennis Price in a wonderful cameo as "Educated", the intellectual crook. I should not forget the lovely Nanette Newman--her role turns out to be more important than mere "eye candy" !
The black and white picture is excellent for a forty year old film--the sound is mono. This is a "no frills" DVD--there are no extras. This movie is fun all the way--if you are a Sellers fan, or a fan of classic British comedy in general, ask our friends at Amazon for a copy. You won't be sorry !
Great Peter Sellers.......2000-01-23
I have often felt that Peter Sellers is best seen when playing in the company of these supporting players. I think they inspire each other. Bernie Cribbins is hilarious. Sellers is great and unselfconscious. All of the members of the cast are great in this movie - even if they only have a line or two. It is a true ensemble effort and completely enjoyable from beginning to end. In my opinion, people have not seen Lionel Jeffreys unless they have seen him in this and "Two Way Stretch." (Another collaboration with Peter Sellers and members of this ensemble cast.) True comedy.

Critics largely dismissed this 1978 movie despite the fact that it was directed by a serious filmmaker, Bryan Forbes (<I>The L-Shaped Room</I>, <I>King Rat</I>). A sequel to <I>National Velvet</I>, the film stars Nanette Newman as the grown-up Velvet (played by Elizabeth Taylor in the 1944 film), and Tatum O'Neal as her niece. O'Neal's character decides to become an Olympic-caliber horsewoman herself, and the prestardom Anthony Hopkins plays the no-nonsense trainer who helps her get there. No dull shadow of its famous predecessor, <I>International Velvet</I> is an exciting film in its own right, with a distinct tone and personality (Hopkins has a lot to do with this), and some very nimble work by Forbes behind the camera. This is more than just a movie for the kids. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

a good movie to watch.......2007-01-14
I have both National Velvet and International Velvet and both are really good movies. However some of the details of the second movie doesnt fit into the first one. Ok for instance Arizona Pie is suppose to be the Pie's son. The Pie was a gelding in the first movie. So he couldnt have offspring. Also the Pie was a sorrel with a white blaze and 4 white legs. and in the second hes a dark brown to almost black. Also National Velvet took place in the 1920s and Im assuming International Velvet took place in the 70s. so that would make velvet almost 60 or so. But overall the movie is good but wished they would of gotten the facts right before they made the movie
Delightful Film - Should be on DVD.......2006-10-10
I saw INTERNATIONAL VELVET on cable television yesterday and loved it so much. I came to Amazon to order the DVD, but was very disappointed to find out it is not yet on DVD. I can only hope Amazon will be willing and able to influence whoever might be able to get this done.
Anything involving horses gets my attention, and I must say I was not ready for the story to end. A bitter and uncooperative Sarah came to England to live with her Aunt and her writer boyfriend. I would have given it 5 stars if they had not been living together unmarried, which is not a good example in a family film. But through their loving and sacrificial care, Sarah evolved into a lovely young lady worthy of admiration and honor. Her tough equestrian coach even earned my respect by the end of the film.
Tatum O'Neal, Nanette Newman, Christopher Plummer, and Anthony Hopkins played their roles magnificently. The beautiful horses and scenery only added to the enjoyment along with the believable and inspiring story. I felt a slight disappointment at the end when the small box did not contain an engagement ring, but that feeling was quickly overcome by what the box did contain.
I do hope others will feel this film worthy of release on DVD. I will be watching for it Amazon!! Thank you!
A film to watch again and again.......2006-10-09
There are so many reasons to watch and re-watch INTERNATIONAL VELVET. The calibre of the acting is high, even from young Tatum, who does not exhibit the "cute" type of performance anyone who saw NATIONAL VELVET might expect. I was surprised again and again at the sophistication of her acting. British subtlety abounds. Plummer and Hopkins are, of course, off the charts as always. I loved the plot, aside from the quick marriage of Sarah towards the end, but that may be because I'd paired her off with Hopkins. The tension was on a par to watching the Olympics from the sidelines, very intense and absorbing. The scenery and the photography are beautiful enough in their own to make watching the movie worthwhile, especially the views of the ocean and the small Englsh village. I may just have to buy this movie. Whether you love horses or England or sport or just a good yarn, this film fllls the bill.
Beautifully filmed, heartfelt coming-of-age family movie.......2006-03-10
Like its predecessor, National Velvet, International Velvet (1978) boasts a stellar cast: teenager Tatum O' Neal, the gorgeous Nanette Newman, and leading men Christopher Plummer and Sir Anthony Hopkins. It also has a more believable plot and a top-notch writer/director in Bryan Forbes (The Stepford Wives, The Slipper and the Rose, The Guns of Navarone, Colditz). The main stories are Sarah Brown's (O'Neal), an American orphan who finds herself in England with an aunt she doesn't know (Newman as the adult Velvet Brown), and of the horses and people inextricably entwined in their lives. A poignant and graceful growing up story of the challenges facing a difficult teenager and the adults who raise her, International Velvet has something for both horse lovers and non horse-lovers alike. More important than Sarah's bid for the Olympics is the love that is won. The cinematography and soundtrack are stunning and each should have been nominated for an Oscar; Tatum should have won another with this role, too. Beautiful scenery. An under-rated feel-good family film!
Warning: Box of tissues useful when watching this movie as, amid the love and triumph, there is some gritty realism.
Emotional and Exciting Horse Adventure.......2005-01-01
In this far-flung sequel to 1944's National Velvet, impetuous teen Sarah Brown (Tatum O'Neal) follows her dream to become an Olympic competitor. Under the tutelage of a tough-as-nails trainer (Anthony Hopkins) and a headstrong horse called The Pi, Sarah grows into a strong, sensible young woman. The timeline and the tone of the sequel hardly qualify International Velvet as such, but the show-jumping action, horsy dramatics and rider dynamics are strong. Credit is given to the novel National Velvet by Enid Bagnold.

I Love This Version!.......2004-11-04
I just finished watching this and loved it! I got it because I really like Laurence Harvey and I remember how much I enjoyed the book when I read it years ago. I felt this version was perfect (missing only more emphasis on Philip's early years-if you've read the book) and the most perfect aspect was Kim Novak. I have never been a Kim Novak fan, infact I've always kind of disliked her but she IS Mildred. I felt she was totally believable in the role without going over-the-top which would be easy to do. I even forgot she was Kim Novak-she looks so different from her other more popular roles.
Great movie-well worth it!
Searing Portrait of Obsession.......2003-11-22
Yes, this novel was adapted into an earlier Bette Davis version. Yes, that version has a loyal following. But this film deserves a fair shake.
On its own terms, it is a realistic, gritty portrait of obsession. Laurence Harvey is always believable and Kim Novak is absolutely frightening in her role. She IS Mildred to the core. Kim's usual vulnerability does shine through as always, but that only deepens the poignancy of this self-destructive character who doesn't understand how to love or be loved. She is authentic in her manners and accent for the period, making one wish that for once this lovely and talented actress would get the credit she deserves. "Of Human Bondage" deserves a dvd release.

I think a dvd version of this film should be made
Excellence.......2000-01-29
I may be only 22 and this movie may have been made before my mother was even born, but still. This was by far, the greatest old movie I have ever seen (besides "It's a wonderful life" lol)
My personal favorite "present day" movies may be Natural Born Killers and those types of movies, but this one kinda hit home.
If you have ever had a partner who has broke yer heart, you may be able to relate to this movie and enjoy it quite a bit.
She Loves Him As Much As She Can.......1999-08-22
Kim Novak superbly portrays S. Maugham's Mildred Rogers in OF HUMAN BONDAGE. This is the absolute best screen adaption of the novel. Novak shines in this movie. See how the character of Mildred completely changes from beginning to end. Fans of Kim will delight in seeing this so very beautiful a talented actress in a story of how a cold social climbing waitress toys with the obsessive affections of a young medical student, played by Laurence Harvey.

DO YOU MISS A COLD WHEN IT IS GONE?.......2004-07-13
I love this film! THE MAD WOMAN OF CHAILLOT, is an interesting satire, based on Jean Giraudoux's famous play. Katharine Hepburn, heads up this stellar, all-star cast, as the French Countess Aurelia, immersed in her own little world, and deemed eccentric, perhaps even mad, by Parisian society. When Aurelia "wakes up" to the "real world" and realizes how corrupt it has become, she swings into action! A wonderful mock trial is held, to judge and condemn the evil-doers, sensationally presented by Danny Kaye. The evil ones, consisting of a clergyman, a general, a chairman, a prospector, a commissar, and a broker, are summoned to Aurelia's home, and quickly exterminated. She assures her friends, they will not be missed; "Do you miss a cold when it is gone?"
This film is in my library, because it was one of the first films, done by my favorite actor, Richard Chamberlain. Bryan Forbes, who directed this masterpiece, has a wonderful eye for detail. His sharp eye, focused on Richard Chamberlain, casting him as Roderick, Aurelia's young French lover. Chamberlain was powerful, considering it was one of his first films, and he was playing against actors, known for strong stage presence. He not only held his own, but actually stole the scenes, with his fine acting, and exceptional physical beauty, a "detail", that did not go unnoticed, by the trained eye of director, Bryan Forbes. Forbes found Richard Chamberlain, a delight to direct, and later cast him as Prince Charming, in his wonderful movie, THE SLIPPER AND THE ROSE, remarking on his devastating, good looks, and humility.
If you enjoy satire, lovely music, (The Lonely Ones), great acting, and have an appreciation for detail, then this film is for you. In it's day, this film was not well received; but I suspect it is because satire, often flies over the head, of the average viewer. I believe this film was actually, "ahead of it's time," and resonates more profoundly today, with corporate greed, failed cultural institutions, political corruption, and the criminal wasting of our natural resources. Maybe, there will be another woman...just mad enough...to step up to the plate and deliver a blow to the present INSANITY!
Terrific, timely, terrifying!.......2003-08-26
"The Madwoman of Chaillot," based on a 1940s play by Jean Giraudoux, is one of those underappreciated treasures that rewards careful and repeated viewings. Like another parable/allegorical fairytale from Sixties filmmaking, "King of Hearts" (also set in France), it is an easy movie to dismiss as pretentious or longwinded. But this is to judge on surface appearances or to hold the film to a standard that it does not seek to attain. This work is a morality play, meant to instruct and illuminate; it is not a typical linear, real-world drama -- although the interweaving of the real world of contemporary Paris with the fantasy world inhabited by the Countess (Katharine Hepburn, who is brilliant as usual) and her coterie of elegant female eccentrics gives the movie much of its surface charm. Hepburn's Countess is not so much insane as preferring to live in an imaginary world of rosy nostalgia and wishful thinking. She and her friends fundamentally realize the difference between invention and fact but choose to generally ignore it.
Let me be the first reviewer here to suggest that the curious use of three aged women to represent the forces of justice at work in this dual world is a deliberate hearkening to the Weird Sisters of "Macbeth", or the Furies of Greek tragedy, or even the Fates themselves. Similarly, the huddled poor of the Parisian streets and the menial laborers mostly have no names because they represent archetypes, perhaps -- a Greek chorus full of accusations for their tormentors. They contrast starkly with the smooth amorality of the movie's duplicitous villains -- an oil tycoon, a clergyman, a general, a politician, a business consultant, and others -- played to icy perfection and with just the right amount of absurd black humor by Pleasance, Brynner, Gavin, and their partners. Richard Chamberlain, playing an idealistic activist, adds a dose of romanticism when he leaves the world of the "faceless pimps" (in the damning words of Danny Kaye's relentless Ragpicker) and journeys for the love of Irma, a poor waitress, into the shadow world of the Countess of Chaillot -- although in doing so, he must destroy Hepburn's illusions forever, prompting her to take a terrible vengeance on the "greedy, stupid, lost" men who have caused the world to "not be happy."
The climactic "trial" sequence, where the Ragpicker must play the devil's advocate on behalf of the collective monied classes, placed in the docket for crimes against humanity, is a masterful performance by Kaye, playing a non-clown role for once (who ever suspected he had it in him?). With honeyed words, he first seduces his "judges" into falling for his deceits; then, when his lies are exposed for the pretense they are, he turns into a raging, bellowing monster of hatred, openly proclaiming his naked desire for money and power merely to make war and destroy what's left of the earth. Finally the mask has slipped; the court renders its verdict; and Hepburn's meting out of justice is as dreadful as any judgment of Nemesis.
Which is all very ponderous and heavy, but you can really take this film two ways -- whimsical fantasy entertainment or something much deeper and disturbing. The choice rests with the viewer, much as it lies with the characters in the movie to choose which path they wish to pursue. "The Madwoman of Chaillot" may have been made over 30 years ago but the issues it raises and the attitudes it depicts are still very much with us today, and only someone as asleep and dreaming as the Countess wouldn't realize it.
Worth seeing only for Hepburn and Danny Kaye.......2002-07-14
My, what a curious and uncertain film. The writer and director try out all sorts of tones without ever deciding on one. Is it a joke? Is it serious? Can it be that Bryan Forbes unashamedly uses 1960's riots/protest footage as window dressing? Do the filmmakers share the cynicism of most of the male characters? Rarely have I witnessed a movie where amateurishness and pure gold collide and co-mingle as they do in this.
It is overlong, and the interminable scenes of Donald Pleasance, Yul Brynner and John Gavin (three of the most witless and inept performances you will ever encounter) drinking at the outdoor bistro with Charles Boyer should've been left on the chopping room floor.
It takes awhile for Miss Hepburn's monologues to begin, but when they do this sorry picture takes off into a completely new stratosphere: the movie becomes not only bearable but actually good for a few sequences. I loved her bit about mailing herself letters that she writes the day prior.
Kate is fantastic as the out-of-her-time Countess. Her acting here is on a par with the best work she's ever done. Gone is the regal stiffness of Lion in Winter made the year before; in its place, you find the qualities she displayed in her greatest roles: The Philadelphia Story, Long Day's Journey Into Night, Summertime. What a shame that Madwoman of Chaillot lets her down. Most of the rest of the movie is garbage.
The most sharply etched moment in the film comes about midway when the "Ragpicker" (none of the characters sport actual names) played by Danny Kaye bursts her bubble. "It's you who've been dreaming, Countess," he tells her. She echoes the words of the small group of disenchanted people they stand among. "The world is not beautiful???" she questions in utter amazement.
Kaye is also quite good in a non-comic role. He looks kind of sexy, too, especially in the mock trial sequence.
The other actors are set-up to appear foolish. Granted, some of them deserve it, but I was appalled that Giulietta Masina gets treated so callously. She's asked to be a brainless virgin here, quite a feat considering her age. If you loved her in Nights of Cabiria or the other Fellini films in which she starred, stand warned that Masina has absolutely _nothing_ to do in an insulting role. Having no feelings of affection for Margaret Leighton or Edith Evans, I didn't especially mind that they were thrown away as well.
Admittedly, the finale when Kate leads the bad guys to their doom left me with a rosy glow. If only she'd thought to take the writer and director of this movie down to the dungeon, too!
Hepburn at Her Finest.......2001-05-01
O.K., I admit it. I'm the type who would watch Katherine Hepburn in literally ANY role and find something good about it. There are plenty of flawed or mediocre works I have sat through just for her. But the fact is that "Madwoman .." is a truly great film both as a comedy and a social critique. A consortium of evil conspirators representing most of the world's repressive idelogies (Communism, religious fundamentalism, corpoate greed, rigid middle class conformism and military war-mongering)try to destroy the "decadent" city of Paris (symbol of liberty, beauty and humanism). Kate, the city's defender, is a highly eccentric Countess who may or may not have some kind of semi-magical powers and who may or may not be immortal. To make a long story short, the bad guys make her mad and end up buried alive (when asked if they will be missed she replies "Do you miss a cold when it is gone?" Good answer!). Don't mess with Kate!
Not the usual Bryan Forbes.......2000-11-08
This is not your usual narrative. The vestiges of Jean Giraudoux's trifling and engagingly whimsical play can still be noticed in Edward Anhalt's interesting modernization of his work. Bryan Forbes ("King Rat") directed this unusual movie. The cast includes Katharine Hepburn (an extremely sane madwoman), Margaret Leighton, Edith Evans, Giulietta Masina, Charles Boyer, Yul Brynner, Donald Pleasence, Danny Kaye, John Gavin, Nanette Newman, Oscar Homolka, Claude Dauphin, Richard Chamberlain, Paul Henreid, and Fernand Gravet. There is some nice photography along the way. Not for all tastes.
