Description

To save humanity, the Earth's mightiest heroes must reunite for a rematch of heroic proportions. Mysterious Wakanda. It lies in the darkest heart of Africa, unknown to most of the world. An isolated land hidden behind closed borders, fiercely protected by its young king - the BLACK PANTHER. A king hold the fate of the entire earth in his hands. Because brutal alien invaders are coming, soon to fill every sky and control every land, seeking what is buried beneath ancient Wakanda. That leaves the Black Panther with a single option, one that goes against the sacred decrees of his people-to ask for help from outsiders. And so he turns to--- The Avengers - Captain America. Iron Man. Thor. Giant Man. Wasp. And the Incredible Hulk. These mightiest of heroes have battled the aliens before, and barely survived. They thought it was over. They were wrong.

3 out of 5 stars More of the same.......2007-06-21

The first Ultimate Avengers movie was decent, but ended just when things were really starting to pick up. I was hoping the sequel would be better, but it's pretty much more of the same. The alien invaders are back, and they're still kinda generic and uninteresting. Voice acting is decent, but I never really got attached to these heroes like I wanted to. I suppose the looser guidelines on violence should appeal to older fans like me, but when the story is bland like it is here, the violence just comes off as a forced attempt to be 'edgy.' There was one twist in the ending though that caught me by surprise.

I wish they'd made this a full tv series, giving the creative team time to work out the kinks. UA2 will give you enough of a superhero fix, but it won't leave you satisfied.

1 out of 5 stars Avengers downfall.......2007-05-26

Initially I was really pleased to receive this new DVD. I played the "Which Avenger Are You" DVD rom game and it said I resembled Thor! You can make different choices and change your gender to view other characters. This game is repeated from Ultimate Avengers DVD.

This sequel was very disapointing. The plot development and the return of the alien invasion reminded me of The Justice League premiere movie. I found I was not surprised when you understand the marvel formula - the hero will suffer or die, despite their power just to say "we are human". What I mean here is that the whole movie was a bad soap opera, way too melodramatic and very cliched or stereotyped in areas. I could go in specific details, but I just don't have the time because most is too negative i am afraid.

I listened to the commentary and found that the creators contradicted what they set out to do. What they deemed 'cool' was in fact 'cold'. Sorry my review is probably not want you want to read, but, I really feel this is a film for die hard fans to see these characters animated. There was room for huge potential, the animation is fine, the voices are fine and fit the characters, but the story itself has just been done too many times in other mediums and this was not NEW.

Perhaps forgetting the alien invasion and sticking to telling a traditional Avengers story with known bad guys would have have made this movie more memorable.

Overall I was not happy with the movie, but, this is probably better than nothing at all.

Lionsgate did do an excellent job with packaging and the features on the DVD. At least it looks good on a shelf.

4 out of 5 stars Ultimate Avengers 2.......2007-05-14

If you loved, still love, Marvel comics, this is for you. The excellent animation brings the still images of the page to life. Although I don't think that it was quite as good as the first, Ultimate Avengers, it is still well worth purchasing.

2 out of 5 stars sophomore slump.......2007-05-07

The first Ultimate Avengers was awesome. I was really looking forward to the 2nd one, especially since the Black Panther was going to be featured. I have to say that I was disappointed. The story was not engaging and I expected more from a sequel. The action animation was not riveting, at least not to Marvel Comics standards. The story didn't flow very well which leads me to blame the over-all direction. Hard to say what they could've done to make this one better. All I wanted was more of what was in the first edition but I think they fell short.

4 out of 5 stars WYSIWYG.......2007-04-11

This is an animated cartoon about superheroes, the acting and the voice overs are decent enough the story line has a believable plot for a story about superheroes overall enjoyed the movie and do not regret the purchase. If you are looking for a knock your socks off movie, then look else where if you want good clean fun then watch this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Avengers - The Movie.......2007-05-14

If you loved, still love, comics; this is for you. It takes the static images of the Marvel world and brings them to dynamic life. All of the Avengers are well represented here. The only thing that might compete would be the much anticipated live action film planned for the not to distant future.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining [3.5 stars].......2007-04-26

The animation is good and the story line interesting. What makes the movie worthwhile is the climactic battle between the Hulk and the rest of the Avengers. Not surprisingly, there is a fair amount of "action" violence without any gore. Depending on your sensitivity to violence and language, kids can watch the movie.

4 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 Stars Captain America Iron Man Nick Fury match whits.......2007-04-21

Great follow-up, including with the animation to Marvels recent live action Spiderman, X-Men, Daredevil, Hulk, Punisher, and so on. What great exhibition of Marvel Comics favorites Captain America, Iron Man, and intro for those less familiar with Nick Fury, Wasp, Giant Man and the like. For an animated film there's a lot personality and attitude in each superhero. The final showdown with Hulk is the keeper, especially with about 70 min total running time. Stay tooned!!! Those familiar Marvel Comics "Guest Star" volumes or the Capcom Arcade tournament game, watching Hulk vs. Giant Man, Hulk vs. Wasp and Captain America, are the highly anticipated dream scenario.

1 out of 5 stars A complete waste buy the BOOK!.......2007-03-04

The trade paper back was excellent what Marvel did here was take all of the character development, internal struggles, and just about all the debth to the story and threw it out the window and taked on an alien conspiracy to make more action (because pretty explosions is the only thing we need to make a good movie right?).
Buy the book, movies like this is what makes comics still look bad. worst adaptation of the year. Quality control people.

5 out of 5 stars Marvel Fans Assemble!.......2007-02-24

No matter how old you are, if you are a fan of Marvel, then this is a must see movie. This is a very detailed, and somewhat touching, movie based on "the Ultimates" comic series. The animation for the film is really good, but the best thing about this is the story which could have been a live action movie and is just as good. The story is very detailed and goes from Captain America in WW2 to the exciting battle between the Avengers and the Hulk. It goes through the history of the Avengers and how the team formed, according to this story anyway. The voice acting in the movie is really good and features some known names such as Michael Massee (24, The Crow) for example. Overall, if you are fan, this is for you! The special features are great, especially "Assembling the Avengers" which is a short history of the series all the way up to `The New Avengers'. "The Ultimate Voice Talent Search" is short, but still really funny since it shows a few people's audition tapes that went no where since none of the fans won a role. It is easy to see why on some, but it is entertaining overall.

Description

Paralyzed with post-graduation ennui, a group of college friends remain on campus, patching together a community for themselves in order to deny the real-world futures awaiting them. Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Noah Baumbach's hilarious and touching directorial debut was one of the highlights of the American independent film scene of the nineties, speaking directly to a generation of adults-to-be unable to reconcile their hermetic education experience with workaday responsibility, and posing the eternal question, "Where do we go from here?" Stingingly funny and incisive, Baumbach's breakthrough features endlessly quotable dialogue delivered by a stellar ensemble cast.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars real life humor.......2007-05-13

Great movie, about life between college and the real world. Very funny.

5 out of 5 stars A timeless classic for nostalgics.......2007-02-03

Kicking and Screaming has a timeless quality--full of the mundane, subtle experiences few ever mention during the post-graduation transition to the real world. Baumbach's wit is understated, yet piercing as each character develops into a quirky, eccentric, but understandable being. The viewer can at once sympathize and struggle with the characters as they succumb to their habits time and again.

What is most striking is the sincerity that Baumbach infuses in the story. He has a way of making the irrelevant relevant, and the repulsive pallatable. Viewers can identify with this film if they've yet to graduate, but even moreso after they have.

5 out of 5 stars Love This Movie.......2007-01-28

I fell in love with this movie the first time I saw it in 1997. Have seen it numerous times. Decided I would buy it for my personal collection. Dark, monotone humor, combined with the drama of searching for self is what makes this movie incredible. It's not for everyone. You'll either love it or hate it.

5 out of 5 stars graduation as reliving birth trauma.......2007-01-23

During one particularly illuminating sequence of Kicking and Screaming, Grover (Josh Hamilton) has to watch as his short story is critiqued in class. "It's beautifully written," says someone who will shortly become very close to him. "However, I've noticed that characters in Grover's stories spend all their time discussing the least important things, like what to have for dinner or the best-looking model in the Victoria's Secret catalog. I see nothing wrong with dealing with the important subject matter."

Many people level the same accusation against this gem of Gen-X ennui, so easy to underestimate with all the throwaway conversation about Traci Austin, Bud Bowl II, and movies starring monkeys. It's a little picture, little meaning it has a small budget and no one gets cancer or anything. "I'm a little guy," says Otis (Carlos Jacott as one of the film's more memorable characters). "I can't do all the things the big guys do." A friend offers a small measure of comfort: "What are you talking about, you're like a monster, you're huge." Don't underestimate yourself, Otis, for however "little" it may be, Kicking and Screaming is really about the biggest things there are: our dreams in a lonely, chaotic world where we think we know God, only to find He's not so much dead as just not answering the phone.

At the center of the picture are four college friends for whom graduation is a form of birth trauma; they stare into the real world abyss that awaits (and the abyss most certainly stares back). Grover's girlfriend Jane (Olivia d'Abo) has ruined his post-commencement plans by joining a writing program in Prague. "How will that work if you're living with me in Brooklyn?" he asks. "It will be the same, except I'll be in Prague." Otis is moving to Milwaukee, where he'll continue his education and live with his mother. Skippy (Jason Wiles) has no concrete plans other than to read all the great short novels. Chris Eigeman, playing the curmudgeon intellectual he has made an indie film career out of (see: all of Whit Stillman's pictures), says it best: "Eight hours ago, I was Max Belmont, English major, college senior. Now, I am Max Belmont who does nothing. All of my accomplishments are in the past." Yes, school has prepared them for nothing, but now they have a thousand ways of expressing it.

Taking a cue from perpetual student Chet (Eric Stoltz as the kind of individual who paraphrases himself), they collectively decide to "postpone that get-started year" by renting a house on campus and continuing to live life much as they had before graduation (but without the grades). The rhythms of college are quickly reinstituted as Otis and Chet start a book club, Max eats at the cafeteria, Skippy audits classes, and Grover hits the campus bars with an eye for "freshman betties" whose sexual congress he hopes will cleanse him of any unresolved feelings about Jane. They all meet where Chet tends bar to rationalize life's absurdities and prove their intellectual worth with trivia.

Writer/director Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale) instills in each of his characters juvenile affectations consistent with a desire to climb back in the womb (most notably Otis and his pajama tops worn as formalwear). It's worth reminding that they all have childish, even pet-like names (Grover has the added bonus of the phonetic "grow" in it); despite superficially "mature" traits like blazer-wearing, cigarette-smoking, and scotch-drinking, they're unable or unwilling to take care of themselves outside the collegiate cocoon. The world does not run by the rules they know, if it has any rules at all - even their games of trivia have become so contextually incestuous that they are entertaining only to themselves.

The crux of everything is Grover's deteriorating relationship with Jane, juxtaposed as it is with its genesis. When they make that first connection, it's strange for Grover to think they'd gone four years on the same campus without meeting, "catching the same colds and being bit by the same mosquitoes." We like to think of love being a uniquely spiritual entity, a product of fate - that there is a special someone we have to be with. Grover is so grasping for design in his solipsistic existence that he interprets divinity in something as mundane as a flight attendant fidgeting with a model airplane. But as he soon finds out, perhaps these things are instead a product of chance, controlled by circumstance and nothing else; that there is no meaning in things other than the meanings we give them. The love we feel doesn't necessarily last forever; a deigned future does not exist, no matter how entitled to it we may feel. All that we can be sure of is the moment of now.

How do you make God laugh? begins Chet's favorite joke. Make a plan.

Interesting footnote: Olivia d'Abo (Jane) is probably known to most as Karen Arnold from the hit television show The Wonder Years. She is also jarringly British, if you've ever heard her give an interview. One of her first motion picture performances was in the Bo Derek film Bolero, where she controversially appeared nude. D'Abo herself claims she was born in 1971, which would have made her thirteen at the time of that picture's release.

5 out of 5 stars Becoming a Baumbach fan.......2007-01-06

Like many people, I was first exposed to Noah Baumbach's work with the film The Squid and the Whale. I was impressed with the genuine portrayal of the characters, and although I was disturbed by some scenes, the movie intrigued me enough to check out Kicking & Screaming. Not to be confused with the abhorrent Will Ferrell soccer movie, this film treads in the relatively untouched direction of post-college angst. However, it was hardly overwrought, like many films that enter such territory. Instead, the film features subtle humor and some of the most genuine, witty dialogue I have ever seen. Although the DVD is somewhat overpriced, as is often the case with these independent films, it is certainly a good purchase for anyone who enjoys Baumbach, and I highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Like a Neon Sign.......2007-02-22

While I enjoy the romantic comedy genre, the script for this film plods and the story is so predictable that it actually was a bit tedious. That's not to say that the romantic aspects of the film aren't also enjoyable, because I did enjoy the film -- it just took me about 5 times to sit through the DVD. Michael Vartan from the Alias TV series fame has been in several romantic comedies like "Never Been Kissed" (1999) & "Monster-in-Law" w/ Jane Fonda & Jennifer Lopez (2005). Vartan is an interesting actor. Born in Paris, he began his early film career in French-speaking films. He has a charming boyish sincerity that plays well, even in this DVD. Natasha Henstridge came to attention in the Species series where she played in all three of those movies as well as in "The Whole Ten Yards" & "Bounce." The plot is predictable with the two fiancees each planning their weddings solo & then discovering that they've fallen in love. Olivia d'Abo, who is the daughter of Michael a'Abo from the rock band Manfred Mann, plays Vartan's wealthy fiancee that eventually gets dumped. The coincidences in the movie are a bit too numerous, pointing like neon signs to the ending where Vartan's Charlie Hudson & Henstridge's Anna Penn fall in love. This is a nice evening's entertainment, particularly if you really enjoy the romantic comedy genre. While Vartan & Henstridge do well enough, they still can't surmount the material. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting.......2007-01-02

This movie was a beautiful representation of what happens when two individuals are destined to be together. I enjoyed watching the story as it unfolded. The friendships within this movie were very realistic and heartwarming. I recommend this movie to anyone who is searching for evidence that divine love connections are possible.

4 out of 5 stars Michael Vartan... mmmmmmm :).......2006-11-03

I bought this film because it Michael Vartan (Vaughn in Alias) plays in it... I never heard of it before my search, but it's surprisingly good !

4 out of 5 stars Romantics, read on! Cynics, don't bother!.......2006-07-14

I read all the reviews of this movie before writing mine. I LOVE THIS MOVIE! I've watched it at least 50 times and it makes me cry each time. I know, I'm a hopeless romatic and probably a total fool, but this movie is so sweet. I think Michael Vartan (!!) and Natasha Henstridge have chemistry that works in this movie. I also like the subplot of Henry and Tracy and them not knowing their best friends are the ones who are getting married to people they are not suited for. Maybe the writing and editing are poor, I'm not educated to comment in that area, but the movie is funny in many parts, depicting typical New York snobs such as the salesperson at Bulgari. The fact that they fall in love during the weekend they are both planning their weddings to other people is a fun twist. They do "the right thing" by not being together until they break up with their respective intendeds. Unlike most real life. Maybe love at first sight isn't smart or lasting or whatever, but remember - IT'S A MOVIE! It's for entertainment value, and I feel entertained each time I watch it. I like the music and wish I could find the soundtrack to buy. I have watched this movie with two of my guy friends, and both of them cried, although not as much as I did. The part that always gets me is at the end when they are in the park, pretending to fly to Europe and then she says she can't do it. Notice the look on Michael's face as the camera fades away...then the song..."have you ever loved somebody so much it made you cry?" Yes, I have. Yes, I do. Enjoy this movie for what it is, fun, romantic, with a (thankfully) happy ending.

4 out of 5 stars Sweet.......2004-11-12

This is really not a bad movie. True, the script isn't the greatest thing and it is predictable, but that doesn't make it a bad movie. The plot is interesting, the situation is heartbreaking and the acting is pretty good. The problem this film has is that it is both a chick flick and a drama and it can't seem to decide which it wants to be. If you think you can live with that, then I recommend it. If you don't, then don't buy it. All you basically need to know about the plot is that two people, Anna and Charlie, meet the weekend they are both planning their weddings and they fall in love. And, of course, we all know what happens at the end, but all in all, it is still a pretty romantic movie.

<I>Matrix</I> writer-directors Larry and Andy Wachowski commissioned seven artists from Japan, America and Korea to make nine short films set in the world of their feature trilogy. Some of the top anime directors contributed to this anthology, including Yoshiaki Kawajiri (<I>Ninja Scroll</I>), Koji Morimoto (<I>Robot Carnival</I>), and Shinchiro Watanabe (<I>Cowboy Bebop</I>). Some of the films tie directly into the narrative of the live-action movies. Drawn in a style reminiscent of Jean "Moebius" Giraud, Mahiro Maeda's <I>The Second Renaissance</I> (Part I & Part II) depicts the human-machine wars that caused the enslavement of humanity and the creation of the Matrix. The duel between two flamboyantly costumed Kabuki warriors in Kawajiri's <I>Program</I> is an expanded version of the cybernetic training Neo (Keanu Reeves) undergoes in the first <I>Matrix</I> film. Watanabe evokes the look of old newspaper photographs in <I>A Detective Story,</I> which falls outside the storyline of the features. Fast-paced, violent and grim, <I>The Animatrix</I> is an uneven but intriguing compilation that represents a new level in the ongoing cross-pollination between Japanese animation and American live action. 5 out of 5 stars Great Backstory!.......2007-03-30

I might not like all of the animation from every story, but every story is truly amazing. It gives the back story to the movies and proves that we are to blame for everything. I'd say that most stories will have you glued to the screen, and even in tears. The final story is about humans capturing a robot and playing with it to make it friendly, and at the end, it tries to save one of the women's life. It is a sad story, overall, this is a thing that is worth getting if you are a fan.

5 out of 5 stars Animatrix is outstanding.......2007-01-25

Aside from the great animation, the stories have meaning and strangely speaks of string theory at its most interesting level. For those who find theMatrix movie meaningful, Animatrix fills in the gaps.

5 out of 5 stars A lot better than it's live action counterpart.......2007-01-02

-The shorts start with "Final Flight of the Osiris" which lets us know where the scans that we hear about from "Reloaded" came from. After it's over we move into what I think should have been in the movie which is the "The Second Renaissance". It lets us know the whole history of how the war between man and machine began, who struck first, and why the machines are so hostile to us. I would have loved to see a live action version of that for the movie but the version we see hear is also very nice. The other stories "Kid's Story", "Beyond", "A Detective's Story", "Matriculated", "Program", and "World Record" tell different stories that range from a kid that commits suicide only to wake up in the real world to a wheel chaired bound athlete that almost breaks out of the Matrix due to his will to push himself. Out of the nine stories I'd say I loved about 8 of them, the only one I can't stand and never watch is the weird one with the program that is trapped inside the matrix or something like that. It's just one big mess of a story and never really holds any interest.

-If I had to pick 3 stories out of the 9 to live on an Island with I'd go with "A Detective's Story", "Beyond", and "The Second Renaissance Part 2". All three have their own unique visual style and all have no connection to each other that I know of. I love "A Detective's Story" because it lets you know how desperate the machines are to capture Trinity and also lets you see Trinity in a completely different light. The Detective in the story is a very likable man who doesn't realize that he's being used by the machines till it's too late. It's a very nice story with a sad ending and one of the best in my opinion, "The Second Renaissance Part 2" is great because that's when you really get to see why the sky in the real world so messed up and also get the answer to the question that Morpheus asked in the first movie which is whether it was us or the machines that struck first. It's told in this mystical way computer way that feels like you're watching a documented history than a fiction animated story and it also helps explain some lines from the 3rd Matrix from the architect especially the line "What do you think I am, human?"

-My favorite story is "Beyond" which a very, very simple story of a girl looking for her cat that discovers a building that no gravity which some kids take full advantage of. I just love how mystical and dreamlike it is, the weird Hisashi like music also helps in creating that mystical aura. The trick to Neo's power is not that he's super human but that he can manipulate the codes in the Matrix and make it into anything he wants. If he wants to fly then he'll remove the codes for gravity and start flying or if he wants to stop bullets he'll just remove the codes that propel it and they stop. That concept is further explored in this story. It's a really great piece of writing because there's not a whole lot that goes on there but just rather you watch kids have fun in the with broken codes for gravity.

-One thing this does a lot better than the movies ever did was to show you the size and scope of the Matrix itself. In the movie you're confined to one city and that's it but in this we pretty much go all around to see what a vast and detailed program that the Matrix is. A couple of the stories should have definitely being in the movie too. "Second Renaissance" and "Flight of the Osiris" should have being in the movie instead of us watching Neo get into one long pointless fight scene after the other. I can understand why because of length they might have cut it but they could have at least given us a truncated version of it.

-I know "The Matrix" movies are suppose to be over but where the movies end that's where stuff like this can go on so I'm hoping that we get more short stories that are as engaging as the ones featured in this pack.

4 out of 5 stars The Animatrix.......2006-10-29

Over all great movie(s), however, in my opinion the live action movies are better.

5 out of 5 stars In some ways better than the three films.......2006-09-20

I like the Animatrix very much. It is a wonderful walk through the world of the Matrix and it provides us with a history of the world leading up to the creation of the matrix. Some of the stories work well and some work less well, but the diversity of the visions is engaging. All the visions are quite short.

In many respects, the Animatrix is better than the films, which seemed to get shallower and shallower as the story went on. The Matrix writers should have had a closer look at the works of William Gibson and other science fiction writers who have been dealing with VR worlds and realities for some years and doing it in a far more sophisticated way.

Some of the animations in the Animatrix would have been even better if they were "fleshed out" into longer films, some are just right and a couple, like "World Record" could have been dropped completely with no real loss.

I return to the Animatrix DVD often. The DVDs of the films, a lot less often.

<I>Point of No Return</I> is one of those Hollywood remakes of a European hit in which one can visualize a committee of studio executives sitting around and saying, "Okay, we know what made the original film unique and different and fun. How can we make that same movie and do exactly the opposite?" For-hire director John Badham (Saturday Night Fever) took <I>La Femme Nikita, Luc Besson's undeniably sexy, original, and kitschy French film about a female assassin, and translated it into a calculating, mechanistic American thriller with no distinctive style. Bridget Fonda gamely plays the willowy street punk who becomes a high-society killer, but once that provocative irony is in place, the movie is pretty much a series of by-the-numbers action set pieces. Until, that is, Dermot Mulroney shows up as a love interest; but even that twist can't save this film. You're much better off with the original, subtitles and all. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

4 out of 5 stars Americanized _La Femme Nikita_.......2007-06-06

Fun treatment of the French Noir Moderne classic _La Femme Nikita_, without any pretensions of grandeur. This film clearly needs some fine-print in the credits stating "we only did it for the money," but is a much more light-hearted & trendy take on the darker & more brooding French original. They're both excellent films, but PoNR being a better "movie & a pizza" choice while the original is perhaps better reserved for the serious film buffs out there. There's whole fan sites dedicated to this movie, largely due to Bridget Fonda's excellent work in injecting life back into what was essentially a story that had been "sanitized for American audiences" by an idiot-run big-budget Hollywood movie machine. Oh well, you can rarely go wrong underestimating the standards of the American public, but they almost did so when dumbing-down LFN. Fortunately, the actors & director on PoNR did a great job & by giving everything they had, brought an otherwise eviscerated cinematic story back to life. Kudos!

1 out of 5 stars Do not waste your time or money, see the original.......2007-03-06

Do not waste your time or money, see the original. Once in awhile, a remake of a movie from another culture works; for example, Seven Samurai becomes "Magnificant Seven" -- Most of the time, the remake is trash. The original "La Femme Nikita" is a great movie: exciting with a strong political viewpoint; this version is simply Hollywood pablum.

5 out of 5 stars action, romance a winner.......2007-01-21

Bridget Fonda is outstanding in this role. Good mix of action and romance. I have recommended it to several friends and they all love it too.
I also "love Nina".

2 out of 5 stars I've seen wayyyy better... even Fonda's hotness couldn't save it.......2006-12-01

I have never saw the original Nikita merely because its hard to find. I settled with the American remake as a last resort insted. It can't be that bad its got a few legendary actors in it like Gabriel Byrne, Harvey Keitel & Anne Bancroft in it. Not to mention my childhood dream woman Bridget Fonda. Damn is she sexy. But boy was I so wrong.

Anyways, the film is very violent for all the wrong reasons. Has swearing for all the wrong reasons. Even a drug addict like Fonda wouldn't mouth off everytime she opens her mouth. Thats not the girl I fell for. The pace is every sloppy. Its hard to believe how many holes in the screenplay there are for such a simple story. What is the major problem is its lack of plot. You just sit there after her missions not knowing what will happen. Its unpredicable in a bad way. There are no twists off any kind. I found the ending quite stupid. It seemed like an easy way out because the movie was almost at its 2 hour point. After the credits I felt dissapointed.

As for the actors. The beautiful Bridget Fonda puts in a good one in my book. Her blank stares are quite annoying but her sexy angry look works so well for this movie. Gabriel Byrne one of favourites puts in a kind but strict performance as he gradually becomes a father/kinda love interest figure to Fonda. Who wouldn't fall in love with her? The two work well together I'll give you that. R.I.P Anne Bancroft, forever Mrs. Robinson to me, is also scrict but very understanding to Fonda. Its also good to see her in films now that she passed away around 6 years ago I think. Finally Harvey Keitel, good in his early career is very dull at this point but since his playing a character who is dull and coldhearted, lets nothing get in his way, has no attachments and is plain evil works for this movie I guess. You see how generous I am to the actors. I could be mean to them for being in a so-so movie but I like them too much to say bad things about them. Oh did I mention I think Bridget Fonda is sexy.

4 out of 5 stars A Surprisingly Very Good Remake: American Style!.......2006-10-15

I have seen, "La Femme Nikita," and it is a very good film. However, "Point Of No Return," is also a very good film. More importantly, it holds its own very well. One of the main characters is (Bridget Fonda) as the assassin working for a spy agency that you are never really sure about. Are they working in the best interests of the country? Or are they somewhere on the fringe working as a rogue agency within the CIA? Their loyalties are never really delved into. However, one thing is for sure; they are in the business of assassination. And it is the way the agency recruits their assassins that make this an interesting film. [no spoilers]

Enter the main protagonist portrayed by (Bridget Fonda). Fonda has found herself in a very difficult situation [no spoilers]. Moreover, it concerns a matter of life or death. Therefore, she feels compelled to work for this agency: even though she continously wants out of it. (Gabriel Byrne) portrays the agent in charge of her assassinations. He is an unsympathetic character, and you get the feeling that he himself was pulled into the agency in much the same way as Fonda. However, my favorite character is played by (Harvey Keitel), known simply as 'the cleaner'. He is an agent who cleans up the mistakes that members of the agency create. There are some really shocking scenes with him. I highly recommend the film. Don't compare it with the other, they are different, and both deserving of praise. Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars the big green.......2007-01-19

This was a christmas gift for a relative. As far as I know, he is enjoying it. Thank you and have a prosperous new year!

4 out of 5 stars Good Soccer Movie.......2006-11-10

This movie is very entertaining. My daughter really enjoyed it since she plays soccer and could relate to the kids learning to play and be a team. Lots of slap-stick comedy that anyone would enjoy.

1 out of 5 stars Not a good movie for boys.......2006-04-12

While looking for a movie that would have good role models for boys, I had high hopes for this one, but it's typically Disney. The stupid, petty, and poor players are boys, and the smart, "good", and athletic players are girls.

This is not a good movie if you looking for role models to be examples for young boys

1 out of 5 stars Snore-fest..........2005-09-06

So boring! Totally predictable--your average "feel good" sports movie. A new teacher arrives in a small town and decides to teach the misfit kids that inhabit it soccer. They're horrible when they first try. She then announces to them that their first game is the next day (I believe... i know the game is soon). They're all worried. They lose to the "Knights" (see? predictable NAME too). Somehow they end up in the finals, against the Knights again. They defeat them and receive a huge trophy that looks more like they won a pro sports championship instead of a kid's soccer league competition.
I never really understood the name of the team... "The Big Green?" Isn't the field in the middle of their town The Big Green? And what does that have to do with the team name whatsoever? Okay, maybe I'm missing something, but...

I watched the game while I was sick. Hoping it'd make me feel better. My parents liked it and insisted I didn't enjoy it because I felt crummy, but it we wasn't just me--it was the movie too. Don't invest in it--find something your kids would REALLY like.

1 out of 5 stars Unbelievebly predictable (and bad).......2005-07-07

This is the most boring, vapid, cliched movie in the world. Here's the plot (if you haven't guessed): Soccer team of lovable misfits sucks at the beginning of the movie, losing to their stuck-up but great-at-soccer rivals (even the name is predictable--the "Knights"), but then, through teamwork and dedication etc. slowly get better (esp. the fat kid). They come from behind at the end of the season to beat the Knights with seconds left (I believe the little kid, who is always dirty, scores the last goal). The Knights are humiliated, the Big Green recieves a cup that makes it look like they won the World Series, they learn eminently predictible life lessons, etc. It's the standard feel-good sports-movie plot, and is not helped by maudlin, cliche-filled acting (not to mention music). Don't believe the five star reviewers, because apparantly they enjoy mindless pap. DO NOT BUY THIS MOVIE!!!!!

<I>Bolero</I>, directed by Bo Derek's husband John, comes billed as "a masterpiece of erotic adventure" (the original theatrical trailer included on this disc is almost worth the price of the DVD). Derek stars as "Mac," who, after "so many years of being so very, very proper," is determined to lose her maidenhood. After a comically disastrous episode with a sheik, she catches the eye of a matador, but their affair takes a frustrating turn after he suffers an inconvenient accident in the ring. As many observers note throughout the film, Derek just may have been "the most beautiful woman in all the world," and for some, that is enough. The fact that she is clearly more comfortable with her equine costars than she is with the rest of the human cast (including--good Lord--George Kennedy as her chauffeur and confidant) is just another of her endearing charms. But for Derek's less patient fans, Amazon.com presents this timed-out guide to the "good parts," or, to be less PC, the scenes in which the ravishing Ms. Derek appears in various stages of undress: 5:00; 20:57; 59:12; 1:28:36; and 1:38:48. But really, for connoisseurs of bad movies, it's all good, from the curious credits ("Love scenes scored by Elmer Bernstein") to the ludicrous dialogue ("I want ecstasy... right now"). <I>Bolero</I> may not be a <I>10</I>, but as a cinematic debacle of <I>Showgirls</I> proportions, it is a must-own "20." <I>--Donald Liebenson</I>

Description

Upon graduating from school in Britain, the wealthy Ayre "Mac" McGillvary (Bo Derek) hungers for more education in the art of love! Journeying to Morocco, she meets a handsome sheik, but alas, he falls asleep while seducing her. A hot-blooded matador in Spain does not disappoint, however. Unlocking her deepest desires, her world-class lover gives her a lesson in ecstasy she¹ll never forget.

3 out of 5 stars Hunky male co-stars a definite plus, but ... .......2007-06-21

This movie is mediocre. Not real good, not real bad. I watch it for the hunky Scotsman and the hunky Spaniard. The Scotsman has a very seductive voice, and isn't bad looking; the Spaniard looks like Hugh Jackman. The Arab sheik, forget. One of the characters was right when they said he could pass as 'your sister' - too pretty to be a real man.

The sets were nice, the locations were fabulous. Weak, almost non-existent plot. The best thing for me was seeing the nude male co-stars, and I do wish there had been more emphasis on that, and also the sideline romance between the Scotsman and the Spanish woman. Got a good laugh when the Arab sheik made a kidnapping attempt.

Just my female viewpoint.

1 out of 5 stars Car wreck for undersexed juveniles........2007-06-04

There's no doubt in my mind that the people who created this load of celluloid sewage knew that featuring Bo Derek getting her bones banged just shy of aggravated battery would have a draw, particularly for juveniles with unrestrained hormones. And that's the only reason anyone would watch this movie. The script is straight out of a fantasy contest, the acting abysmal, and the whole premise ludicrous. They do their best to create a fantasy atmosphere, indulging in the beauty of Spain for romantic backdrop and give us a Bo Derek pleading for sex. For most of this movie's audience, that's enough. For lovers (no pun intended) of quality film it isn't even close to a reason to spend a quarter watching this crud. Oh, I admit, I watched it several times whilst in my college years. But that's what college age guys do. And I would venture to guess that the demographic for this movie is 90% male, mostly from 18-30. Frankly, watching Bo get her brains banged out is worth the price of admission, especially for that group. But everything else about this movie isn't just bad, it's purely comical. I wondered to myself what was George Kennedy thinking when he accepted his role in this. If he'd have dug into his Dragline character from "Cool Hand Luke" the movie would have at least conceded to it's absurdity and not tried to be taken the least bit seriously. I find it hilarious that Amazon realized this to the point that they conceded by giving out the times in the movie where Bo gets banged. That alone should say something- that anything outside those time slots isn't worth watching. I know lots of 40 somethings that would have liked the same thing for "Lolita," though those encounters are less frequent. All in all, this movie ranks (pun INTENDED) in the hall of fame of incredibly bad movies. The 1 star is for the Bo sex scenes, otherwise, ZERO!

4 out of 5 stars BOlero!.......2007-01-15

John Derek will go down in history as one of the worst directors of all time. One could call him the antipode to Stephen Spielberg. However, Derek did have ONE thing going for him in his movies: showcasing his lovely wife naked!

It is odd that these days many people are too young to remember Bo Derek. Growing up in the 80s, she was the undisputed queen of eroticism, and this film shows why that was so. I just watched it again this morning & I had almost forgotten just how perfect her body is & how her long flowing hair looked while riding a horse.

If it were not for Bo, I doubt if anyone ever would have heard of John. In fact, he is already quickly becoming a footnote in the annals of Hollywood. To be sure, this is a "B" movie and it's not very well done. 90% of the scenes look like they were thrown in as an afterthought. The movie attempts to be comical at times, and fails miserably. For the most part, it is a yawner.

The one factor that just barely elevates it to 4 stars is Bo Derek shedding her clothes @ will. If you're a Bo Derek fan, this movie is a can't miss! When it comes to John Derek movies, this is as good as they get.

2 out of 5 stars "I had so many years of being so very proper. I had good-girl claustrophobia.".......2006-09-25

The alternate title for the film Bolero (1984) is Bolero: An Adventure in Ecstasy...after watching the film last night a better one might have been Bolero: An Adventure in Stupidity...written and directed by the late John Derek (Tarzan, the Ape Man), the film starred his most current wife at the time Bo Derek (10, Tarzan, the Ape Man). Also appearing is George `Anything for a Buck' Kennedy (The Dirty Dozen, Cool Hand Luke), Andrea Occhipinti (Conquest), Ana Obregón (Monster Island), and Olivia d'Abo (Conan the Destroyer, "The Wonder Years"), in one of her first roles.

Bo Derek plays Ayre `Mac' MacGillivery, a woman who (get this) is preparing to graduate from an English college and once she does, she'll trade in her diploma for a vast inheritance. Once that happens she plans to travel the world and learn the ways of love because, as you see, she's still a virgin. Okay, wait a minute...Bo's pushing thirty and she's just graduating from college? I can buy off on that, but I'm having a much harder time with the notion she's untouched, I mean seriously...anyway, after seeing one too many Valentino films (the film is supposed to be a period piece, set in the early 20th century I guess), Mac hits the road with her trusty chauffeur Cotton (Kennedy) and college friend Catalina aka `Cat' (Obregón), the trio heading towards the Middle East as Mac thinks it would be the ginchiest to get bagged by a real, honest to goodness sheik. After a failed attempt (the sheik got stoned on magic smoke and passed out, but not before covering a nekkid Derek in warm honey), Mac, with entourage in tow, makes her way to Spain with the intent on hooking up with a handsome matador, and she finds one named Angel (Occhipinti), who, when not faux fighting bulls or shagging fourteen year old gypsy girls produces wine, and lots of it. With the help of Angel's tagalong gypsy girl named Paloma, played by Ms. d'Abo sporting a ridiculous Spanish accent, Mac worms her way into Angel's bed after agreeing to use her vast fortunes to buy his wine, the deal sealed with a good shagging (I find Spanish business negotiations quite agreeable). Following this there's some more idiocy, capped off by Angel getting his doodle gored by a bull, and now unable to perform, much to Mac's dismay (no more zoom zoom in the boom boom). So anyway, while Cat's getting friendly with Mac's kilted Scottish lawyer and Cotton gets his groove on with Angel's sassy cook, Mac tries to draw Angel from his depressed funk in the hopes she'll be able to cure his condition by prancing around his room nekkid. When not sadistically teasing a man who can't perform, Mac begins taking up bullfighting for some odd reason or another.

Okay, I first saw this film back in the mid 1980s on cable I was in the hormonally charged state of a teenager coming into his own, so my main focus was obviously on Derek's nekkidness, of which there's quite a bit. After watching this film again some twenty years later, I find I still enjoy the nekkidness, but I have to say the rest is probably one of the more ridiculous efforts I've seen in a long time. I think the intent was to create a rich, erotic drama, but the film fails miserably mainly for the fact Bo Derek cannot act, at least not enough to carry a film. She's certainly attractive, but her ditz factor is incredibly high, not helped any by her husband's completely rotten and moronic scripting (the film comes off like a poorly written Harlequin romance novel). Speaking of her husband, how creepy is that, knowing he wrote and directed the film, especially given the sequences where his wife is getting it on with other guys (he filmed her in some equally steamy sequences in the 1981 moron-a-thon Tarzan, the Ape Man)? The man was pushing sixty at the time (while Bo wasn't quite yet thirty), so the maybe wedding tackle didn't function the way it used to which resulted in his willingness to let his wife dally about on screen with other men (a couple of the intimate sequences looked pretty realistic)...I don't know, but whatever...a good part of the story has Bo's character talking about her virginity like it was some sort of gift she was willing to impart, which, after awhile, got really old (at least she didn't refer to it as her `flower, but she did refer to it as `her fruit' at one point), which ends, mercifully, after she gets her shag on with Angel. As far as the rest of the cast they didn't fare much better. George Kennedy seemed kind of lost, hanging about to pick up a check and see some nekkid broads I suppose, and Olivia d'Abo appeared simple-minded as the young gypsy girl stuck on Angel (eventually she gives way to Mac as she realized she couldn't compete). One of the biggest mysteries for me, besides the actual point of the film, is why it ran an hour and forty-five minutes. Once you get by the juicy stuff (the attractive people being a nekkid), the rest just drags under the unbearable weight of its' own harebrained idiocy. Perhaps the funniest scene in the film comes near the end, as Mac and Angel are getting it on (seems Mac's desirability is such that it can cure a broken doodle) and they're transported to, get this, a smoke-filled plane of reality. Right in the middle of their routine a large, purple neon sign appears behind them spelling out the word EXTASY, as if to really bring it home (yeah, I know it's spelled wrong but that's how it was in the film, intentionally so). All in all if you're looking to see Ms. Derek in the raw, then this film is right up you alley as she's got about five or six scenes, but if you're looking for anything remotely resembling an actual movie (plot, interesting and engaging characters, etc.), best to keep on looking.

The picture on this DVD, presented in widescreen (1.85:1), enhanced for 16X9 TVs, does looks clean and clear, and the Dolby Digital Stereo Surround audio comes through well. As far as extras there isn't much except for a theatrical trailer and subtitles in English, French, and Spanish.

Cookieman108

By the way, did I mention how creepy (and skeevy) I found it for a man to write and direct a film featuring his really hot wife enjoying the pleasures of other men? Maybe he took some weird sense of pride in showing the world how, even at his age, he could still get with really attractive women...

3 out of 5 stars Bo Derek - the erotic dream princess.......2006-06-07

The best thing about this misguided 1994 comedy is the performance of Kirk Douglas as a feisty old scrap-metal millionaire named Joe whose venal family is out to get his fortune. Douglas had scored a modest hit with Burt Lancaster in the 1986 buddy comedy <I>Tough Guys</I>, but this was the veteran actor's chance for a late-career comeback--and his last major movie role before he was temporarily sidelined by a stroke in 1995. Douglas is quite funny here, playing an old codger who keeps frustrating his greedy relatives by refusing to die. Instead he threatens to will his fortune to his sexy "nurse" (Olivia D'Abo), and the scheming family reacts by finding a long-lost nephew named Daniel (Michael J. Fox), who is the only relative that Uncle Joe remembers with any fondness. The idea is that Joe will warm up to his welcomed nephew and will him his fortune--but of course this only makes the old man more crotchety and protective of his money. The movie's got a strong supporting cast including Ed Begley Jr. and the late Phil Hartman, but director Jonathan Lynn (who also plays Douglas's butler) fails to maintain a steady pace and the movie's cynical humor gradually wears out its welcome. Along the way, however, Fox keeps up a lively rapport with Douglas, who's obviously enjoying himself in a role that lets him cut loose with plenty of saucy and savvy attitude. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

4 out of 5 stars Great little-known funny film.......2006-11-11

If you've ever had a wealthy relative that has put your family at odds on ANY LEVEL, this film is for you! Ample one-liners in this one, and Phil Hartman is in his usual top form. A terrific go-to comedy for your DVD collection.

4 out of 5 stars How low would you stoop to inherit a fortune?.......2006-10-30

This film is very well written, directed, and the acting is great. A wonderful cast. Michael J. Fox gives a great performance. "Greedy" explores just how low people will stoop where there is money involved. Especially if they think they have a chance to get some of it. Watch as these characters stab each other in the back, while at the same time teaming up to get the fortune from their uncle, any way they have to. The effects of greed in people lives can make for very unusual behavior. Michael Douglas is awesome and apparently enjoyed this role very much. A movie you will want to see again and again. It's in my collection and I intend to keep it. I highly recommend it. Prepare to laugh.

5 out of 5 stars Greedy.......2006-07-29

I enjoyed this movie. I always like Michael J. Fox and I liked how the movie correctly showed how greedy people can get. However, I didn't like how the uncle lied so much!!

The couple's first anniversary of wedded jungle bliss is approaching and Jane ponders what gift would be appropriate--necessitating three flashbacks from the Disney television series explaining why various celebrations are out of the question. First Jane remembers when her old British school chums came to rescue her from the bush and whisk her back to civilization. Then Terk and Tantor help her recall the time diamond miners hired Tarzan only to double-cross him. The final remembrance features Jane's old neighbor Robert who flies to Africa to recover a music box he gave her--and to betray England. Michael T. Weiss and Olivia D'Abo do the honors as the voices of Tarzan and Jane, and Mandy Moore and Phil Collins provide the vocals for two new songs. Like many of Disney's straight-to-video "sequels," the animation and story aren't up to on par with the original,; but the kids won't care. Ages 3 and up. <I>--Kimberly Heinrichs</I>

Description

As Tarzan and Jane's one-year marriage anniversary approaches, Jane searches the jungle for the perfect gift for Tarzan, enlisting the help of the hilarious Terk and Tantor. As they recall the many adventures they've shared so far, Jane realizes what an exciting year it's been in the jungle; from encounters with both old friend and new adversaries, to outsmarting prowling panthers to surfing the lava down an erupting volcano. But that's nothing compared to what Tarzan has in store for Jane--a surprise that will show her just how much he understands her world. All of the favorite characters from Disney's TARZAN are back, including Terk, Tantor and the Professor, in an action-packed tale full of surprises. TARZAN & JANE features irresistible new music, including a new duet of "Two Worlds" performed by Phil Collins and Mandy Moore. The wonderful new musical number "Singing To The Song Of Life" is also sung by Moore.

1 out of 5 stars The worst movie ever made........2006-03-19

The title says it all. The first Tarzan movie was a work of art, however, this is a disgrace. They could have actually made an interesting plot with this, except they just threw it all away, adding in weird flashbacks and stuff, probably to direct you away from the lame plot. My eight-year-old cousin fell asleep in this, so I'm sure that I'm not the only one thinking the way I do. As far as Disney sequels that were only realeased on DVD and video go, I'd say the only one worth getting is The Lion King 1 1/2. That one was actually funny and had a plot.

I hope this review helped you save your well-earned money.

1 out of 5 stars Wha, wha, wha?.......2005-12-23

The first Tarzan was the only good one. How could Jim Cummings and Jeff Benett betray me? Tarzan 2 was no exception. I can't believe I had mom waste money on the DVD! This movie (I dare not to call it a movie) is only good for first viewing. Really the only part I liked was the end. Mandy Moore's "The Song of Life" was cute. But otherwise, a very dumb movie.

2 out of 5 stars Boring.......2004-11-24

My title says it all. I sat waiting for this movie to end as I watched the poor animation and predictable story. The whole movie focused around Jane's flashbacks of the past year she spent with Tarzan. Because they're flashbacks, you already know who's going to live and who's going to...well, live. Nothing too exciting, heartbreaking, wonderful, or anything that falls into that catergory ever happens in this movie. Overall, I would say this movie is an extremely poor follow-up to a great, action-packed, colorfully animated movie. Oh, and if you still have some desire to watch this movie, I wish I knew how to give you ours, because its only use in our house is collecting dust...which isn't that useful. It has only been watched once, so after some feather dusting, it should be in mint condition.

1 out of 5 stars Tarzan & Jane.......2004-09-14

This movie was so boring! My brother and I watched it a few years ago, and haven't watched it since. Let me tell you what this movie is about, and you tell me if it sounds interesting:

It's about Jane remembering things. HOW BORING IS THAT?! ALL IT IS IS FLASHBACKS! WHAT HAPPENED TO THE ACTION, ADVENTURE, AND EVERYTHING ELSE GOOD THAT WE SAW IN THE FIRST MOVIE?!

Just another example of how directors take good movies, and make cruddy sequels to them, hoping they'll be a big hit like the original...WHICH THEY'RE NOT!!

I think the movie we have is going in the neighborhood garage sale next year.

1 out of 5 stars Yes, it really is that bad.......2004-08-24

I realize that I am repeating opinions already expressed by reviewers here, but potential buyers and viewers cannot be warned enough against this dreadful sequel! My three year old and I really loved the first one and watch it again and again; it's one of the smartest Disney movies in a long time. This sequel, however, is completely unwatchable for an adult. The animation is not even on par with other Disney sequels, and the voices are so clearly other people trying to imitate the originals. My toddler thinks it's ok, but I have to leave the room while she watches it. Don't even rent this one!
