The Hardy Boys Mysteries and The Nancy Drew Mysteries began in 1977 as separate series alternating in the same time slot on ABC. Early the following year, the casts combined, and in the fall of 1978 the Nancy Drew thread was dropped and The Hardy Boys Mysteries continued on alone. This Season One boxed set captures the twin-series idea at its most ambitious, with adolescent brothers Frank and Joe Hardy, created by author Franklin W. Dixon, sleuthing for clues one week and Carolyn Keene's Nancy Drew investigating crimes the next.

Actually, as fans of the books know, Dixon and Keene were both pen names used by Edward Stratemeyer when he created those characters in 1927. Just as the young detectives have been updated in print every so often to accommodate successive generations of readers, so too did the TV show present Joe (Shaun Cassidy, brother of David Cassidy of The Partridge Family), Frank (Parker Stevenson), and Nancy (Pamela Sue Martin) as thoroughly 1970s kids. The boys are outfitted with motorcycles, Joe enjoys a retro-pop singing career, and Nancy has a certain freedom of movement only the hippest of dads in a permissive age would allow. Hardy Boys finds the always-amicable siblings following in the footsteps of their father, Fenton (Edmund Gilbert), a private detective, as they untangle capers that take them from haunted houses to Hawaii. The Hardy episodes make for brisk, family viewing, much better than the bubblegum reputation that built up, undeservedly, around the series. Slightly less interesting are the Nancy Drew programs (despite a more entertaining supporting cast), but only because the heroine is less focused and distractingly man-crazy, and the storylines are less exotic. An emphasis on the supernatural and science-fiction themes lends a Scooby-Doo vibe to several programs in both series, though the best stories are the ones with straightforward, meat-and-potatoes detective work. Among the directors on either series are Jack Arnold (The Creature from the Black Lagoon), Winrich Kolbe (Star Trek: The Next Generation), and actors Vince Edwards and Stuart Margolin. --Tom Keogh

    4 out of 5 stars THE HARDY BOYS-NANCY DREW MYSTERIES-SEASON 1.......2007-05-29

Teen sensations Shaun Cassidy, Parker Stevenson and Pamela Sue Martin star as the famous super detectives in season 1 of this classic Glen Larson television series, which premiered in 1977. Based on the books by Franklin W. Dixon and Carolyn Keene, the charcters come to life in a unique and most original way.
Shaun Cassidy and Parker Stevenson star as Frank and Joe Hardy while Pamela Sue Martin portrays Nancy Drew. In the first season, the writers and producers really stuck as closely to the original books as much as they could, making it the best season of the entire series. Shaun Cassidy performs his hit songs "Da Doo Ron Ron, That's Rock 'N' Roll" and a couple of others as well.
Shaun Cassidy and Parker Stevenson's portrayl of the Hardy Boys was great and original, but Pamela Sue Martin's portrayl of Nancy Drew was even better. She fit the part so well-the clothes, the hair, her voice, her mannerisums, etc. Everything about her was pure Nancy Drew. Her stories were also much better and much more intruiging and suspensful than that of the Hardy Boys.
The prints are in very good condition and the audio is good as well(2.0), with the voice over at the beginning of each episode. All of the episodes are great, but my favourites are: "The Mystery of the Haunted House, The Mystery of Witches' Hollow, The Mystery of Pirate's Cove, The Secret of the Whispering Walls and The Mystery of the Solid Gold Kicker." There are no features of any kind in Season 1, but I am just so thrilled it as finally been released on DVD.
I Was 13 years old when this series premiered and I have such fond memories of sitting in front of the televison on Sunday nights watching the Hardy Boys-Nancy Drew Mysteries.

5 out of 5 stars Quite the DVD set.......2007-03-29

I hope they come out with the rest of the series. My oldest daughter is big into Nancy Drew and would love to see them. My wife and I are also interested. Basically we grew up with Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys.

5 out of 5 stars For all Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys Fans.......2007-03-14

I love this show. I grew up reading the revisionist era Nancy Drew books, and have loved collecting anything Nancy Drew related ever since. I was given this dvd set as a gift to add to my collection, and I have enjoyed watching and re-watching the episodes ever since. I am so excited that Season two is going to be released soon, and will purchase that set as well. This show is quality entertainment for the whole family. 5 stars for a superb show!

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as my youthful mind remembers.......2007-03-11

I was rather disappointed in season 1. I never missed this show on TV and thought it was the best but what does a kid know? It just does not hold up after all these years. My husband and I were bored stiff watching these episodes. I would not recommend this to anyone unless like me you were obsessed with Shaun Cassidy back in the day. (I took my 3rd grade pictures in a tshirt with him on it). However I think we have all grown up and this just doesn't have enough to interest adults today.

4 out of 5 stars Good clean fun and adventure.......2007-01-31

I used to rent these shows from a video store when I was a kid, and I was thrilled when I found out that they were on dvd. Some things have been changed from the original stories, such as the elimination of certain characters from the books (Bess and Hannah from the Nancy Drew stories and Iola from the Hardy Boys). Ned Nickerson, who was Nancy's boyfriend in the books, is kind of a geeky guy who now works for Nancy's father, and Frank's girlfriend from the books, Callie, now works as a secretary for Fenton Hardy. Modern kids will also notice certain things that date the shows, such as the references to records instead of CDs and the kids using CBs in their cars to communicate with their parents instead of cell phones. Still, these are really fun shows. They have little violence (just a brawl or two with the bad guys) and no swearing, just good clean fun and excitement with some nice humor thrown in for good measure (ex. "You think he's suspicious of anything?" "What's suspicious about two men carrying a sarcophagus down an alley at midnight?" "You're right, good.").

I believe that the Nancy Drews have unfairly been given kind of a bad rap, even though Ned's cluelessness and George's craveness do make me squirm a bit (they weren't at all like that in the books). However, they I don't think that they're that bad, and in fact, I think that A Haunting We Will Go and Mystery of the Ghostwriter's Cruise are the two best episodes in this set. A Haunting We Will Go has more humor in it than the others, and Mystery of the Ghostwriter's Cruise is really rather clever because it does a good job of making all the suspects look equally guilty. For awhile, I really wasn't sure who did it.

I was also happy that the only previews occur on disc 1 and that they even provided a notice before they begin that you can skip them entirely by hitting disc menu on your remote. I have other dvds that don't let you do this.

Here's a list of the episodes included on the two dvds:

    Hardy Boys:

    1. The Mystery of the Haunted House -- Frank and Joe's father, a private detective, has been acting strange and sneaking around town when he's supposed to be away on a fishing trip. Then, someone breaks into the Hardys' house in the middle of the night. Frank and Joe must brave a haunted house filled with spooky mazes and a graveyard to find their father and the answer to this mystery.

    2. The Mystery of Witches' Hollow -- Callie's uncle, a former policeman, says that some strange things have been happening around his cabin in the woods that need looking into. However, by the time the Hardy boys arrive, he has disappeared. Could there be any truth to the local legends about a witch in the woods?

    3. The Disappearing Floor -- Frank and Joe are tailing someone for their father when they see something really amazing: a flying saucer. Upon further investigation, they find a house nearby with many odd things in it, including a floor that isn't really there. Sound confusing? Imagine how the Hardy boys must feel, especially since no one else has seen these things or believes that they even exist. There is an answer, though, and it may have something to do with a mysterious missing scientist.

    4. The Flickering Torch Mystery -- Frank and Joe are helping their father investigate the disappearance of an audio engineer who worked for a famous rock star (who is played by Ricky Nelson). Soon, they come to believe that the rock star's life is in danger. The question is, who is behind it all? (Note: They never actually mention it in the show, but the Flickering Torch is supposed to be the name of the rock band. The show was based on a book of the same name.)

    5. The Mystery of the Flying Courier -- Joe's band is making its debut in a club near the airport. While Joe is singing, Frank spots a girl that he used to know who ran away from home years ago. It quickly becomes obvious that the girl is involved in something dangerous, but what is it?

    6. Wipe-Out -- What's this about Frank and Joe turning into hotel thieves? The Hardy boys take a trip to Hawaii for a surfing contest, but if they don't watch out, they may get wiped out by something worse than a wave.

    7. The Secret of the Jade Kwan Yin -- While diving for seashells with Callie, the Hardy boys find a Chinese statue that has been thrown overboard from a boat. Before they can return the statue to its rightful owner, it is stolen. Can they get it back and catch the thieves before it's too late?

    Nancy Drew

    8. The Mystery of Pirate's Cove -- Nancy and her friends see some strange things at a local lighthouse that has been empty for years. Then, a strange man offers to buy it, telling them an even stranger story about the place. Could the lighthouse really be haunted?

    9. The Mystery of the Diamond Triangle -- Nancy is flying in her glider (Of course, Nancy can fly a glider! She can do everything!) when she sees a car accident. However, when the police go to investigate, not only is there no car but also no way to get onto that section of road because of a bridge that has been washed out. Nancy is determined to prove that what she saw was real and find the missing car.

    10. The Secret of the Whispering Walls -- Someone steals some papers from Nancy's house regarding the sale of an old mansion belonging to Nancy's great aunts. Nancy is determined to find out who wants to stop her aunts from selling the house, but she may have to contend with the ghosts who haunt the old place to do it.

    11. A Haunting We Will Go -- Nancy and her friends are helping to put on a play to raise money to build a new youth center on the site of an old, run-down theater. They are thrilled when several famous actors and actresses who once performed at this theater agree to come and perform in the play. Soon, strange accidents begin to happen, and Nancy has the feeling that the actors and actresses are hiding something.

    12. Mystery of the Fallen Angels -- When a boy Nancy knows is accused of theft during a benefit carnival, Nancy makes it her mission to find the real thieves. Posing as a runaway and finding a job with the carnival, Nancy meets up with members of a juvenile motorcycle gang who take her on a terrifying ride.

    13. The Mystery of the Ghostwriter's Cruise -- Nancy goes on a cruise with a friend whose uncle is a retired mystery author. As soon as they set sail, someone begins sending threatening messages to the author and playing some rather frightening tricks. A skeleton has popped out of the author's closet and is determined to frighten him to death -- literally.

    14. Mystery of the Solid Gold Kicker -- After Nancy and George go to a party with a friend of theirs, who is a football player, George unexpectedly returns for her forgotten purse and sees what she believes is a murder scene. Unfortunately, when she returns with Nancy and the police, there is no body and no sign that anything has happened. Was it really a murder or a very different kind of crime?

Hands down, this is the best movie (and was one of the first) to come out of the seemingly endless cycle of disaster movies that dominated box offices during the 1970s. It could even be argued that <I>Titanic</I> owes some of its success to the precedent set by this 1972 blockbuster starring Gene Hackman as a priest who leads a small group of survivors to safety from the bowels of a capsized luxury liner. From its stellar cast to its cheesy, Oscar-winning theme song, <I>The Morning After</I>, the movie has all the ingredients of a popular classic, beginning with a New Year's Eve celebration aboard the ill-fated <I>Poseidon</I> and ending as a pop allegory when the Hackman character becomes a Christ-like martyr. Filmed on spectacular sets where everything down is up and the ship's thick hull points in the direction of salvation, this is "a waterlogged <I>Grand Hotel</I>" (in the words of <I>New Yorker</I> film critic Pauline Kael) that is as entertaining as it is unabashedly brainless. <I>The Poseidon Adventure</I> is filled with performances that rise above the limits of the screenplay. Product Description

3 out of 5 stars too much swearing.......2007-06-13

Among all of the swearing and foul language they should have closed the watertight doors. That would have given them more time to get out of the ship. Then the ship is upsidedown yet the catwalk lines up perfectly with the door to the propeller room. I find most of this realy hard to believe.

    4 out of 5 stars A classic ............2007-06-12

I saw this movie on television while I was a teenager ... quite an action-packed flick in its day and worth owning just because it was the first one made. I also own both of the remakes and enjoyed seeing how the years altered the basic plot here and there.

Highly recommended for nostalgia's sake ... watch all three Poseidon movies in order on a Sunday afternoon and see the boat always sink and the few passengers survive and escape (differently in each, and in all three equally entertaining). Fascinating! :-)

    5 out of 5 stars MORE than a simple disaster/adventure flick.......2007-05-03

Irwin Allen's 1972 "The Poseidon Adventure," based on the book by Paul Gallico, pretty much started the disaster film craze in the 70s (e.g. "Earthquake" and "The Towering Inferno"). Gallico's inspiration for the story reportedly came from his personal experience on a vessel that almost capsized.

THE STORY: After a tidal wave capsizes an ocean liner on New Years Eve, ten survivors struggle to make it to the hull (which is actually the bottom of the ship) to possibly find a way out through the stern. The fact that everything's upside down presents major obstacles.

WHAT WORKS: The picture features a stellar cast. The major protagonist is Gene Hackman (fairly young and with hair) who plays fiery rebel preacher Rev. Scott. Scott looks down on prayer and passive faith while advocating a get-off-your-butt-and-TRY-to-win philosophy. He's at odds with Detective Rogo, played by a fit Ernest Borgnine. They're at each other's throats the entire film because, as Rev. Scott points out, they're two of a kind and Rogo doesn't like what he sees when he looks at Scott.

Both Hackman and Borgnine are nothing short of outstanding in their roles.

Leslie Nielson is perfect in the serious (minor) role of the Captain of the ship. If you don't think Nielson can play a serious role, think again.

One of the definite highlights of the film for red-blooded males is the three scantily-clad damsels in distress: Pamela Sue Martin (i.e. "Nancy Drew"), Stella Stevans and the incredibly lovely Carol Lynley. Be attentive and you'll observe that Pamela's character (Susan) dearly loves Rev. Scott; it's attention to detail like this that makes for great films.

Also on hand are: Red Buttons, Roddy McDowall, Shelly Winters and Eric Shea as Pamela's likable little brother. All the characters are great and you really start to CARE for them.

The sequence where the vessel topples over showing the revelers fall/slide to the ceiling is superb. The sets of the slowly sinking, upside down ship are very realistic.

The score by John Williams is perfect and memorable.

WHAT DOESN'T WORK: I've heard people criticize that some of the dialogue is silly and even campy, but -- c'mon -- we all KNOW people that act and speak just like this (or worse).

COMMENTARY: If all you're looking for is a great disaster/adventure flick you'll definitely get that but, as my title blurb points out, "The Poseidon Adventure" offers much more. At the very heart of the picture is the universal question: Why does a good God allow suffering and tragedy? Rev. Scott is a strong believer in God and His absolute goodness, yet he witnesses unspeakable tragedies and death after death. At the beginning, when all is calm, you'll sense that he's ALREADY a bit on-edge, but as the story progresses and the misfortunes mount his personal anger slowly surfaces and comes to the boiling point. The ending is incredible, potent and tear-inducing: The surviving members are almost homefree and yet another obstacle presents itself. Rev. Scott suddenly turns his entire focus to God Himself and "has it out" while attempting to save the others.

Highly recommended and worthy of repeat viewings.

5 out of 5 stars The Poseidon Adventure.......2007-04-07

Great classic TV film. A must have for all action film fans.

    3 out of 5 stars Still Seaworthy.......2007-03-05

For a film nearly thirty years old, Poseidon Adventure is still so effective that it would cause anyone planning to take a cruise to think twice. You probably know the plot--luxury liner capsized by a tidal wave. This synopsis is brought to life with suspense, drama, and sometimes, terrifying reality. One of the most effective cinematic touches is that in nearly every scene, the camera is slowly swaying back and forth to give us a sense that we really are at sea. We follow the journey of ten survivors through the inverted ship to their hopeful rescue--narrowly escaping fires, explosions, and flooding corridors every step of the way. The sets are epic and nothing less than spectacular. Especially the inverted dining room when the Atlantic Ocean comes crashing in, and the engine room which is now a horrifying twisted metal inferno. No, the movie is not perfect, and it is of course starting to look a bit dated. However the suspense and dazzling effects will keep you glued to your seat and you certainly won't be bored. Poseidon Adventure is a true classic. A must see for everyone--not just disaster movie fans.
I'd still watch Titanic over this one anyday - but it's still pretty good.

This is a very good movie that I saw a long time ago on TV back in the mid to late 70's. I finally found a copy which wasn't easy or cheap at the time because it was out of print. The movie still holds up. It is a great story that takes place in the 40's or early 50's. Buster (Jan Michael-Vincent) is the most popular boy in school and a jock. He has a gang of buddies that he drinks with and carouses with. He also dates the school beauty who and does all the right things. His girl friend though is kind of frigid and won't let him have sex with her until they are married. Billy is a girl who lives out in the boondocks with her semi crazy or mentally challenged parents. She has nothing and is dirt poor. She is incredibly backward and shy and the boys of Busters gang use her for sex which she goes along with because it is the only way she is accepted. They ask Buster to go along with them to Billys but he never does because he finds the whole group thing distasteful and he has a girl friend and it would be wrong. But being sexually frustrated and young he goes to Billys by himself one night without telling anybody and takes her for a ride in his truck. They have sex and he begins to see her more and more often and actually falls in love with her. The reprecussions from the community and the scorn thrown his way bring Buster and Billy even closer.

This is a story of young love and loss. It is a very emotional tail and a very good one. If you can find a copy on VHS its worth it if you can afford it. This is a largely forgotten movie and should be out on DVD. This movie also has some sexual content which is very tastefully done and also some very violent content that is kind of disturbing.

THIS MOVIE IS SCREAMING FOR A REMAKE THAT AN ODE TO BILLY JO. Considering some of the lousy remakes there have been lately. I loved this movie. It is a shame that we did not see more films with Jan Michael Vincent talent.

    5 out of 5 stars awesome flick.......2006-01-10

old great flick, and if u look real close at Whitey Buster's alleged friend, well ure looking @ Mr. Robert Englund better known as Freddy Krueger - pretty far out eh?

4 out of 5 stars Touching tragedy .......2005-10-27

Buster and Billie was one of the best little movies of its decade. Jan Michael Vincent showed that he wasn't just a pretty face in this film as he plays a half wild country boy who grows up and separates himself from his old buddies when he falls in love with Billie. Billie is scorned by the girls in town and used for sex by the boys. This girl doesn't just come from the wrong side of the tracks she and her family are considered to be nothing more than the town's trash. And then something beautiful happens. Buster's love changes her and makes her believe that she actually deserves a little happiness.

This is something of a Romeo and Juliet story only instead of two feuding families keeping the lovers apart it's the whole town and its hypocracy and snobbery. It's been years but I've never forgotten the final scene in the movie where Buster rebels and gets his girlfriend the flowers she deserves while the theme song plays.

My two other partners and I agree, that the movie "Cry in the Wild" was not the movie of the year. Hatchet the book was a million times better than the movie that seemed as if it came out of a dumpster. There weren't as many details as there were in the book. For instance they didn't include the moose attack, which was one of our favorite parts in the novel. Another thing that took the zest out of it was there were way to many differences. If you hate movies that don't have the main characters close to the ones described in the books forget it. And the movie seemed pretty quiet because they didn't express his thoughts. If you still want to see this movie, completely denying our review go ahead, but rent it. Don't waste this much money on it. We give it 1 star. And that's being generous!

I have 4 Nancy Drew movies. I think this was like 3rd or 4th one I watched and It's one of my favs. It has a great plot. You'd never guess who the culprit was. I thought it was someone else. I was wrong. Great twist at the end!

4 out of 5 stars One of the better Nancy Drew episodes.......2003-02-20

It's too bad there aren't more of these. You have to like the title, as the Nancy Drew book series has always been written by a succession of ghostwriters. Pamela Sue Martin is great as Nancy: she does a good job of being inquisitive and persistent without being irritating, and she handles annoying characters with finesse. When the mystery author she is accompanying on a cruise gets cryptic death threats, nothing can be proven so of course it's up to Nancy to solve the case. They do a nice job of making it spooky, like when Nancy and the author are walking the deck at night through fog, searching for the source of an eerie, echoing voice. At another point, the ship is threatened by a tidal wave. With Pamela having done "Poseidon Adventure," the director must have had to resist an impulse to have her look at the camera and say, "Not again." I also like how they keep you guessing who the culprit is from among their shipmates, unlike some other episodes where the audience knows what's going on before Nancy figures it out. It's fun to relive the days when, for a very short time, creepy-but-innocent entertainment featured not an older gal like Angela Lansbury, but a beautiful young woman.

Ever Sunday night I would rush home to watch the Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries. Parker Stevenson and shaun Cassidy were the Hardys,Pamela Su Martin protrayed our favorite girl Detecive Nancy. This video "Nancy Drew and the Ghostwriter's Cruise" is the best in the series. Nancy and her friend George are traveling with world famous mystery writer John Addams and his niece Cathy aboard a cruise ship Nancy soon discover this trip is not going to be all fun in the sun.Te writer soon becomes the victim of several attempts on his life. Someone wants Mr. Addams to live at his first novel and rewrite the ending so there is no sequel.I alwayed enjoyed reading the Nancy Drew books and the television series was able to bring life to this exciting and intelligent detevice character. Pamela Sue Martin is great in the role and the supporting cast are also wondeful. Buy this tape and you will not regrat it.

"It was very spooky and there was scary laughter on a tape recorder and threats too. Nancy Drew was going to put on a light and she got shocked." So says my five-year-old son who is fascinated by these out-of-date, hoaky t.v. show videos.

Pamela Sue Martin kicked off the goody two shoes from her Nancy Drew image to play the feisty farm girl with Hollywood dreams who walked out of the Biograph on the arm of John Dillinger the night he was killed by the FBI. John Sayles wrote this depression-era gangster drama, loosely based on the real story of Polly Hamilton (renamed Polly Franklin for the film), and stuffs plenty of sex and social commentary around a surprisingly faithful recounting of the real-life event. Martin transforms from naive young thing to brassy hustler without losing her sweetness, and Robert Conrad is quite the gentleman hoodlum as Dillinger, but the unsung hero of the piece is Robert Forster, uncredited but indelible as a hit man who falls for fallen woman Polly. Colorful, action packed, and full of underdog spunk, this is exploitation moviemaking with a populist sensibility. <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>

5 out of 5 stars Lisa Eilbacher rules.......2000-01-16

The Hardy Boys-Nancy Drew, for people of my generation (25-30), is a sad nostalgia trip - sad because we were almost too young to remember the whole series in 1977-1979, and it ended so soon. It was well done - not necessarily the (dated) music permeating almost every episode, but the whole ambience of late '70's life. While Parker Stevenson fits the role of Frank Hardy well, and his acting is decent, I find Shaun Cassidy's less impressive (I realize many people buy these videos for Cassidy - if so, enjoy, he's here in abundance in every episode). The real unsung draw of several 1977 episodes, and especially this one, is Lisa Eilbacher as Callie Shaw - in my humble opinion the greatest of American actresses. This is early Eilbacher, and she easily out-acts everyone else. For a follow-up pairing Stevenson and Eilbacher, try to catch 1981's This House Possessed - almost a Hardy Boys movie, minus Cassidy.

3 out of 5 stars One of the best Hardy Boys episodes I've ever seen!.......1999-11-01

A good storyline which features alot of the characters from the storybook such as Chet Morton and Callie Shaw. Non-stop good action fun in this episode as they try to solve an unsolved mystery of creatures, screaming people and missing clues. Well acted for that era in the late 70's, but the new baby boomers will find it a drag since there's other shows now like the X-Files and so on.
