Book Description

In THE LAST HERO, Falkner examines Mickey Charles Mantle from several perspectives: as the boy from the mining towns of Oklahoma; as a breakthrough ballplayer, the embodiment of power and speed; as a teammate, a leader of men who remained a boy at heart; as a hero to millions in ways he could never fathom; and finally, as a tragic figure, dying bravely after coming to terms with the price of the irresponsible life he had led. With grace, intelligence, and depth, Falkner provides us with a perceptive look at the man, the athlete, and the American phenomenon who will always be known as, simply, The Mick.

"Mickey Mantle's story, like the man himself, is all-American: small town boy makes good, falls from grace and is redeemed. The man and the story are great!" (New York Times Book Review)

5 out of 5 stars Good.......2003-07-03

This is the first book I've read about Mickey Mantle and its a very good read. There are some very moving stories about the twilight years of Mickey's career and the respect and reverence felt for him by opposing teams. One act of respect - no bunting on Mickey because of his bad knees. And one opposing team pitcher deliberately threw Mickey a home run pitch just to see him hit it out of the park.

This book goes back to Mickey's childhood, and how his father would come home after working all day in the mines, go out back with Mickey and neighborhood friends and play baseball until dark. Mickey was right-handed, but his father would make him hit left-handed to teach him how to be a switch hitter (which Mickey hated having to do at the time).

This book is full of interesting stories and antedotes about Mickey's life. One thing this book did not answer for me that I have questions about: Mickey lived with another woman the last 10 years of his life, but never divorced Merlyn, his first and only wife. Why did he never divorce and remarry this woman? Why did he stay married to Merlyn? What were the reasons that Merlyn never left, or Mickey didn't?

All in all, a great book if you are wanting to learn more about Mickey Mantle.

4 out of 5 stars Mickey Mantle.......2001-10-15

In this book you see all the struggles this young star goes through at an early age and all through his career. You get a look at what he was dealing with everyday as an american sports hero. This book makes Mantle appear as if he starts out as an average sports star all over the limelight. But shows more of what a monster he became as his career and life progressed. Mantle was truly a national hero and this novel spotlights the qualities Mickey possesed to fully fit the part the people saw him playing. From his small life as a young boy to the big life in New York, playing for the Yankees. This book is one of the quality works of Author David Falkner. As a sports fan and an athlete i admired the life of Mickey Mantle because of the way he presented himself during all events. He was humble and seemed as if he would not harm even a pestering fly. It is my believe that to truly appreciate this book, you must first realize the grasp sports had on our culture and what athletes face while in the spotlight, after seeing that you must read this book as if you had never read a biography on a person living a perfect live, because Mantle was unable to do this. At that point you will be able to read this book and totally understand what the author and Mickey wanted to relay through writing it. In conclusion this book is one of the best books i have ever read and a must for all sports fans and followers.

5 out of 5 stars It was a book that described a wonderful baseball player........1998-10-18

The Last Hero the book about Mickey Mantle was on of the better books that I have read about Mickey. I like the way it talks about childhood days, and how he progressed through his years of baseball. Actually I thought the book was a little touching, it touched my heart. I just wish Mick would have taken better care of himself or he just might be alive today. Now I'am only 18yrs old so I never did get to see Mickey Mantle play baseball, but I have read many of the books about him, and just from reading different books on him I have realized that he was a true baseball player. Since the first time I heard about Mickey he has been my hero and will always be my hero no matter what any one says about him. To me Mickey is the best ballplayer ever the play the simple of baseball.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book on The Mick.......1998-07-21

The book is chock full of original research on Mickey's childhood. You understand his immortal line, "If I knew I would have lived this long, I would have taken better care of myself." Falkner, rather than rehash old stories, talks with Mickey's teammates and unearths new gems. It is shame the world has lost this giant.

Book Description

Some say he was the greatest ever—a rare combination of power and speed who made acrobatic catches and never failed to get a hit when his team needed it most. The son of an Oklahoma miner, he was the anchor in center field for a Yankees team that won seven world championships. He was three times the league MVP, he won the Triple Crown in 1956, and in 1961 he dueled teammate Roger Maris in a thrilling race for the single-season home run record. He was so famous that to identify him people didn't even bother to say his last name or even all of his first. He was known, simply, as The Mick.

Mickey Mantle is the first-ever illustrated biography published with the support of the Mantle family. Covering his entire life from his impoverished youth to his glorious career to his poignant sunset years, it features rare photos and never-before-seen memorabilia, with 10 pull-out, removable facsimiles. It also includes intimate stories collected over the years by his sons and his friend, writer Mickey Herskowitz— stories that will be new even to the most avid Mantle enthusiasts. This book is an absolute must for Mantle fans of every stripe, Yankees fans, and baseball fans in general.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE FOR MANTLE FANS!.......2007-06-06

I got this wonderful book for my father for Christmas and he loves it! It's his favorite book on Mickey Mantle. As a Yankee fan myself I also love the book-it's very touching how Danny and David Mantle talk about their Father. The photos are beautiful and all the little extras are really neat to look at. I recommend this book to Mantle and Yankee fans everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have for a Yankee Fan.......2007-03-18

The book was given to my husband as a gift and he enjoyed it so much that we bought one for a friend. Our friend was equally impressed with the book from the different memorabilia to the overall presentation. It's a book you want to look over again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Tribute to The Mick.......2007-03-01

This book contains many seldom to never seen photographs from the Mantle family archives that make the book priceless. The inserted reproductions of Mantle memorabilia are a perfect supplement that give the reader an insight to Mickey that you can't get anywhere else. Top that off with great stories from Mickey Herskowitz, David Mantle and Danny Mantle and you have a real winner.

Mantle was a one-of-a-kind ballplayer that the sport has not seen since his retirement. Almost 40 years later, Mickey still holds many baseball records including the fastest time from home plate to first base (3.1 seconds), the longest measured home run (565' even though he hit a few in excess of 600' that could not be measured) and most World Series home runs (18).

The legend of #7 will live forever.

Wonderful book on Mickey Mantle. Although, I have been lifelong Yankees fan this book had many facts never known to me.
It was great to see Mickey Mantle's OWN handwriting on the copies of his letters especially to his wife!! Mickey was quite the letter writer!! Now that was
surprising----and so touching to find out. A great read and a book for the ages. Mr. Herskowitz has done a real service to ALL Mickey Mantle fans and to Mickey himself
in publishing this wonderful book.

Very impressed with book - my son is big fan and loves it.

5 out of 5 stars Mantle family feels dad would love this book. .......2007-05-02

It was very important to our dad that he be remembered as a great teammate and this book does an excellent job of explaining why he was admired, not only by the fans but his teammates and opponents as well. Randall went to great lengths to research the relevant details of key events in dad's career in order to show the magnitude of dad's courage, competitiveness, loyalty, determination, athleticism and perseverance both on and off the field. Randall spent time with dad and his teammates at the Mickey Mantle fantasy camps and his knowledge and love of dad really shows in this book. Reading the book brought back many great memories and magically transported us back in time to our childhood. The Mantle family gives this book a big "thumbs up" and wishes to extend our heartfelt thanks to Randall for writing this inspiring and enjoyable book that beautifully echoes our deep love and respect for our dad. "A true teammate". - Merlyn, David and Danny Mantle

5 out of 5 stars Heroic, Inspirational, Tragic Figure ..........2007-04-26

Excellent chronology of many highlights of Mickey's career ... especially the descriptions of those monsterous home runs ... no one before or since has had "power for distance" that Mickey had ... lists his lifetime stats, offense and defense, in the back of the book ...

the numerous descriptions of Mickey by his beloved teamates gives the reader clear insight into what kind of person Mickey was ...

the quintessential teammate who gave everything he had on and off the field to win and help his teammates ... e.g., playing in tremendous amounts of pain (so as not to disappoint, in case the father of a poor family took his boy once a year to see him play); at restaurants, picking up "the check" most of the time; insisting that old teammates come to autograph sessions (or he wouldn't attend) so they could make money too; and the lovable prankster (the "TP" prank)...

truly a one of a kind, the last of the 4 great Yankees (Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, Mantle), one of those who really was head and shoulders above the rest, and he was the last player to connect us to the baseball of a by-gone era ...

and to prove it all, he's got his own 4,500 lb. monument in Center Field! I could go on and on ... but ... the book is well worth the money ... buy it!

5 out of 5 stars The Mick, A Great Teammate.......2007-03-01

I wanted to read something different, like what did Mickey REALLY think about, and what did his teammates and others REALLY think about him? "A Great Teammate" does just that! I always knew that Mickey Mantle was a baseball legend, but after reading this delightfully entertaining and informative book, I found myself admiring him even more, but not only as a great baseball player, but as a person. He endured so much physical pain just to play baseball with his teammates and kept them encouraged whether he was on the field or in the dugout; he was there for the team.

"A Great Teammate" recounts those memorable moments that makes the readers experience the excitement of the games as if they were there witnessing those clutch homerun plays, and then reading that last paragraph again just to be sure of what they just read. The awe of those incredible hits, catches, and even imagining Mickey Mantle running the bases, this book honors the man in more ways then one.

Mr. Swearingen did a great job in expressing the respect, the admiration, and the love, not only from his teammates, but from other opposing teammates, the fans, and others had for this incredible, athletic, baseball player. Mickey Mantle was and will forever be a `Great Teammate.' This is truly a great book for baseball fans of all ages. Reading about "The Mick" just doesn't get any better than this.

Book Description

n the life of the great cultural icon baseball slugger Mickey Mantle, we see America's romance with boldness, its celebration of muscle, and its comfort in power during a time when might did make right. But if his life symbolized the great expectations of America in the 1950s, it also epitomized the dashed dreams of a troubled generation in the 1960s and its unrealistic hopes for achievement. MICKEY MANTLE: AMERICA'S PRODIGAL SON is both an explosive biography of one of the world's most fascinating and enduring sports heroes and a telling look at the American society of his time. During six years of research, former SPORTS ILLUSTRATED writer Tony Castro interviewed more than 250 friends, teammates, lovers, acquaintances, and drinking buddies of one of America's most famous sports heroes.

5 out of 5 stars The man and the legend!.......2006-08-08

It results a common place to state the New York Yankees captured along the past Century (and still does) the absolute attention of the great audiences inside and overseas to become a true epic legend. Every five years new and emblematic names inscribed his names with golden letters to enhance still more this living legend.

But Mickey Mantle' s charisma literally surpassed all the possible epithets; his powerful wrists at the moment to make that magic swing so imitated for many sluggers, constituted by himself a justified motive to assist the Yankee Stadium.

That' s why the simple fact of spelling his name was immediately an attraction motive; because that generation of sluggers was compensated for an impressive generation of formidable pitchers; this admirable conjunction of fortunate events made even, much more emotive and mesmerizing the homerun considered as the maxim climax; the definitive feat. And this distinction was proportionally rated according the pitcher' s status.

The Big Mickey was a true mass media`s idol. Perhaps there has not been another baseball player (with the notable exceptions of Babe Ruth or Lou Gehrig) with such astonishing ability to inflame multitudes with that emotion level. The admirable dimensions of his homeruns are part of the collective memory, but the most aspect worthy to remark was precisely mantle was not an ultra developed musculature, or a febrile consumer of supplementary hormones. You should to take into account in those times, the numbers of hours you spent in an airplane made still, more tiring the daily effort, the number of hours of rest was considerably minor respect those actual times.

This sensational biography contains abundant information, graphical and zealously descriptive around the greatest moments in the Big Show, his personal records in the Stars Game and World Series.

For those generations who had the chance to see him, for all those who knew about him in his historic moment, but specially for this newcomer generations, for whom his name is simply synonymous of a legend, it would be very advisable to acquire this invaluable testimony of one of the most emotive, passionate and committed Baseball players in any time.

Farewell Mickey, because your Promethean effort has been compensated for the myth force to become a everlasting legend and motive of continuous, renovated and future references about your tenacity and discipline in the infield.

1 out of 5 stars SORRY.......2004-06-28

Well, sorry to be the only one in disagreement, but this is a trivial and sophomoric book with absolutely nothing original in it. First off, I did live during Mickey's time, and I knew him casually. There are a lot of books describing Mickey's faults, all of which he admitted to himself. The pop psychology, done from a distance, with just the right amount of politically correct sociology really gets old in sports books. The Author contradicts himself several times and does not understand at all the mentality of managers or players in the late 40's and 50's. He gets off on the strangest tangents, and I can't for the life of me figure out what he was driving at. It's a pointless book that reminds me of an article in a checkout stand tabloid. Skip this, get Golenbock's "Dynasty" or "Wild, High and Tight".

5 out of 5 stars meticulously researched.......2003-05-20

if this is your first interest in a book about "the mick", castro's work is a great place to start. i wish this one was available before i read the other three in my collection. what sets this book apart, is the journalistic integrity that is apparent with it, and the avoidance of sensationalism just for the sake of it. it is complete with dozens of anecdotes told by those that knew mantle - a feature that undoubtedly serves to make it more interesting than standard biographical non fiction. it is obvious that the author, seeking to be impartial, had a love for the player and the person. if you are looking for a mantle biography that is an honest portrayal of mantle as a ballplayer with the dynastic yankees, and as a man with weaknesses, look no further. if you are a american history buff, you will also enjoy how santos weaves events of the day and the flavor of the time into the flow of his book. all and all a great read. i highly recommend it, especially to those who, like myself, grew up "worshipping" the yankees of the 50's and 60's and, of course, their centerpiece center fielder from oklahoma.

4 out of 5 stars Another HOMERUN for Mantle with one for Castro!!.......2003-01-21

I wanted to learn more about Mickey Mantle after seeing Billy Crystal's HBO movie 61*. Since Mantle's career had long ended before I was born, my only knowledge of Mantle was his name and that he was a famous baseball player. I didn't even know why he was a famous baseball player. If I ever thought about it, which I did not, I would've guessed he broke some kind of baseball record. Well, it's obvious to me now that before I read Tony Castro's book "Mickey Mantle:America's Prodigal Son," I had absolutely no idea of what I was missing. And, I wish I found out sooner, while Mantle was still alive!!!

This book opened my eyes to a lot about Mickey Mantle, the time in which he played ball, the legacy of the New York Yankees, and baseball, in general. In regards to Mantle, I never knew what a powerhouse he really was with the ability to hit a baseball over 500ft numerous times. Add to that the fact that he could hit from both sides of the plate and the kind of speed he had to get around the bases. His athletic ability alone was astonishing to me. I really wish I were born earlier so that I could have seen him play.

But, this book is not just a lengthy form of the back of a baseball card containing statistics about Mickey Mantle. It is much more. It allows you to live in the times that Mantle did by explaining the goings on in the country and baseball's role in the country at each stage of his life. I think it was great the way Castro did this because you could get a sense of the emotion surrounding Mantle and the incredible greatness of the Yankees at that time. Dare I say, I got caught up in the story almost as if I was watching it or living through it. (Although, I know I could never really know what it was like to live at that time and experience even seeing Mantle play ball on TV.) For example, while reading about Mantle, learning to play ball from his father and grandfather, as he was growing up, you get a real feel for how much Mickey and his father loved baseball. You also see how even at a very young age, Mantle gave his all for the game. You understand that for Mickey playing ball and playing hard was not only about living out a dream, but also about giving back to his father all he felt his father gave to him. It was a labor of love and you feel that reading this book, especially as Mickey begins to realize his potentials by breaking all kinds of records.

But despite all this glory, the story turns dark early with the death of Mickey's father very, very early in his major league career. It continues to stay dark as Mickey's drinking slowly destroys his body, even as he plays. Yet, even through the drinking and injuries, you are uplifted by knowing that Mickey gets out there everyday to play the game and play it better than great.

Finally, though, Mickey must retire and his life goes downward because his drinking gets so much worse. It is at this point that the clouds really darken for Mickey. It is sad, and lasts for the rest of his life. And yet, at the very end, Mickey steps up to the plate one last time to correct the mistakes he's made by drinking. He does this by sharing his darker story with the country as an example of how not to handle the difficult times and, in his mind, waste one's talents. He begins a "don't drink and don't do drugs" campaign to save others from his kind of problems.

"Mickey Mantle:America's Prodigal Son" is really a great book. There is so much more to this story that hasn't even been mentioned here. It is a small history lesson in the goings on in baseball and the country through the 1950s until the 1990s in addition to Mickey's story. It explains why the game is the way it is today with money at the center and no real grooming of players, for any team, as the Yankees did for so long, which led to their famously long winning streak. You don't have to be a baseball guru, or even a baseball lover to appreciate Mickey's heartwarming story with its greatness, disappointment, and true heroics.

5 out of 5 stars How and Why Mickey Mantle Was Our Troubled Public Hero.......2002-09-03

No American athelete has ever been revered by a higher percentage of Americas youth than was Mickey Mantle. We needed for somebody to write a book about how and why America made Mickey Mantle an unprecedented and enduring national sports icon and to what degree Mickey was and was not prepared for the ramifications. As one of those life-long fans of Mantle, I think I've read every book about him, in addition to absorbing forty years of magazine articles. Tony Castro's research and writing produced the best sports biography I've ever read. "MICKEY MANTLE, America's Prodigal Son," is a beautiful composition of history and emotion and revelation. The depths that Castro explored took us to the troubled inside of Mickey the boy and Mantle the man. Castro clearly defined the public star who exposed his personal conflicts only toward the end of his famous life. Secondarily it it also teaches us about the interactions of the Yankees and explains why Mickey's teammates and opponents were always so loyal and supportive of him. (Joe DiMaggio excepted.) Actually, Castro's whole approach to the subject was masterful. The reader benefits from more than just new insights into what made Mickey what he was and wasn't; the reader learns about why Mickey became what he ultimately became and how he became so much a part of us. This book should be required reading for fathers and sons of all ages. It teaches us about ourselves and about the times we all shared with Mickey Mantle--from those days when he was what we all we wanted to be, to those days when he became what we all hoped he and we wouldn't become. In the end Castro explains to us the many reasons why we were fascinated with Mantle. The dark side of our flawed idol having been explained for the first time in detail, sets the stage for the bittersweet end where Castro describes the salvation that all of us desired for Mantle to attain. Castro paints the canvas with the events leading to Mantle's death. The end of the ride allowed the public to bury The Mick in the same glow it always wanted for him as a real American hero, strong, but at the same time, understandably and forgivably fragile.

A homerun!!! What a book. The stories that Bill Liederman writes about are informative and genuinely funny. Liederman is the best;I wish he'd write more. I 'd love to meet Liederman. I am sure that there are many more stories that he could tell that didn't make the book. I loved the story about one tooth Tony asking for a dental plan as a dishwasher at Mickey's. Loved the book and couldn't put it down.

Book Description

Mickey Mantle, the hayseed kid from Spavinaw,  Oklahoma, was in his sixth year with the Yankees. He  was already America's homerun king. He was about  to become a national hero. 1956 would be a  record-breaking season: the golden summer fans would  remember forever. Now Mickey Mantle brings it all  back just the way it happened--spectacular playing  on field, crazy hijinks with Whitey Ford and Billy  Martin off. There never was a time like it before  in baseball. There never will be again. It was  magic.

4 out of 5 stars hanging out with mick.......2003-07-15

I enjoyed this causually written account of Mickey Mantles' summer of 1956. It's like sitting on the front porch with Mick as he tells you the events and feelings of what he and the yankees experinced that year,on and off the field.and he spares you his war stories by leaving it at "we went out and partied that night". He talks about his triple crown, his homerun race agianst Babe Ruth(also in the back is a season schedule of dates,hr's,pitchers faced, site, opponents, and runners on base).Mick also discusses the 1956 world series agianst the dodgers and descibes the perfect game by don larsen. Also there are game and team photos. i think you will enjoy micks account of his favorite year.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book I ever read, and I am not even a Yankees fan!.......2003-02-12

When I read this book I could not put it down. The detail of the 1956 season that Mickey goes into is unmatched because the words come right from the source, MICKEY! I think you must be a baseball fan to enjoy this book, but you definitely don't have to be a Yankee fan. I strongly dislike Steinbrenner's Yankees, but this is before he ruined the organization. Who doesn't have a small spot in their heart for the oldtime Yanks? This book tells you about the relationships between Mickey and Billy Martin as well as Whitey Ford, straight from Mickey's mouth!! Mickey hired the great Phil Pepe to help edit his book, and Pepe's editing always makes the reading just keep flowing. Outstanding read, and I recommend it to any baseball fan!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite book 2000.......2001-01-08

This book is one of the best books I have ever read. Not necessarily the best book ever written, but the best book I have ever read. It is my favorite book because it is about my favorite subject, baseball and of course the New York Yankees. Someone who does not like baseball or the New York Yankees as much as me would probably not like the book as much as me. But for a real baseball fan, it is a must read. The `50s were a great time for baseball, and the Yankees, and this book documents one of those spectacular seasons. To keep interested in this book, you must be a baseball fan, and at least like the Yankees in order for the book to be a good read. I say this because the Yankees are so good, that a lot of people despise them because they are so outrageously good. Either way I loved the book, it informed me on a time of baseball when I was not around to witness it, and now after reading the book, I feel I lived it. I felt like I was there, I watched Mickey win the Triple Crown, I watched the Yankees win the World Series. I was there. This was a great book, and I would recommend it to anyone with a heart of baseball, such as I do.

Something of a publishing stunt when it first appeared in the mid-1960s, The Quality of Courage was conceived as a baseball-steeped companion to JFK's bestselling compendium of political valor, Profiles in Courage. The literary equivalent of primitive art, this slight collection--written under the careful direction of ghostwriter Creamer, one of the best sportswriters of the era--scored as a surprisingly compelling read in its own right. Like Kennedy, Mantle was, in the nation's eyes, a certified hero who played valiantly through pain. Using Profiles as a model, Mantle and Creamer compiled a series of personal sketches of teammates and opponents who continued to take the field and play their best despite personal adversity. "The people I most respected in my life were people who had courage," Mick tell us, and "the stories I liked best were about courage."

Reading more like conversational monologues than a written text--Creamer's marvelous achievement is in letting Mick's voice come through as familiar rather than some chiseled artifice. Mantle's observations on such ballplayers as Whitey Ford, Joe DiMaggio, Phil Rizzuto, Roger Maris, Roy Campanella, Ted Williams, and Jimmy Piersall are really quite charming in the way they reveal his homespun attitudes, opinions, and the qualities he respected. From these pages, it's sadly apparent that Mantle had an easier time drawing strength and inspiration from others than he did carrying the weight of inspiring a generation on his own broad, brawny back. --Jeff Silverman

Book Description

As a man who played baseball brilliantly despite near-constant pain from a succession of injuries, Mickey Mantle knew something about courage. In The Quality of Courage we find Mickey's opinion on some of his widely-recognized associates including Jackie Robinson, Roger Maris, Casey Stengel, Joe DiMaggio, and Ted Williams. Here also are Mantle's opinions on some lesser known but equally meritorious candidates: war hero and pitcher Lou Brissie and umpire Bill Grieve. And then there is his opinion of those with whom he probably felt the strongest bond: players such as Roy Campanella, Don Zimmer, and Jimmy Piersall whose principal asset of physical excellence was suddenly taken from them. Much is made of the need for role models in our society, but it is perhaps as instructive to learn which qualities the role models themselves find worthy of respect and emulation. Mickey gives us his list in his characteristic straightforward style, leavened with humor and a wealth of good stories. Mickey Mantle played for the New York Yankees, leading the team to twelve World Series between 1951 and 1968. Robert W. Creamer is the author of a shelf of fine baseball books including Babe: The Legend Comes to Life and the following Bison Books: Stengel: His Life and Times, Jocko (with Jocko Conlan), and Rhubarb in the Catbird Seat (with Red Barber).

5 out of 5 stars A must-present for all kids.......2004-07-23

I also was given this book when I was young. I'll never forget the story, I think of Hank Bauer or Billy Martin, I can't remember who, but they were at a cabin on a vacation I believe and someone was carrying an oil lamp and somehow it set on fire while they were carrying it, but they still kept it in their hand until safely disposing it, in the process burning themselves. They asked the guy why he didn't drop it and he said he knew the place would have gone up in flames if he did.

Baseball fans will remember that every time Mickey came to bat, whether at Yankee statium or on the road he always received a standing ovation. Too bad he died so young.

5 out of 5 stars A TRUE CLASSIC!!!.......1999-10-26

This book is such a great read with fantastic stories about courageous people. It can be used as a motivational,self-help book if you're looking for what it takes to have guts in today's wimpy society. This book hits a home run with all ages. It should be promoted more.

4 out of 5 stars A great book for any baseball fan!.......1999-08-19

I really loved this book. My only complaint and trust me it's a small one is that I wish the chapters were a tad longer cause the stories are so great! I sure miss the Mick!

5 out of 5 stars a must read for all.......1999-02-24

I got this book as a present when I was 7 years old (1968). It has been one of my favorite books ever since. Each vignette teaches a lesson in courage. From the story of the little boy who is courageous at his first haircut to Jackie Robinson's first year in the big leagues. I have been trying to locate this for my nephew and my son. It has been out of print since 1970. I was truly excited to see that it was being reprinted. Many more people will now have the opportunity to read about courageous individuals and how they can apply these principals to their lives

5 out of 5 stars Read it when I was 10, cost 50 cents, still have a copy.......1999-02-19

I read this book when I was ten years old. It was the most influential book I've ever read. I did not know it was re-issued. I would highly recommended it to children. I can't imagine a better book for children; it's useful for adults, too.

The book brings out examples of what Mickey Mantle said he respected more than any other thing: courage. In fact, just days before his death, brought on by alcohol abuse, he said to the nation: "If you want a role model here's one - don't be like me, play like me, but don't be like me." Sports and media personnel, including sports people who knew Mantle, expressed how surprised and amazed they were by the couragious example he showed when faced with death. It was no surprise to me, it was right out of this book. In fact, on the first page he quotes Shakespeare: "Cowards die many times before their deaths; the valiant never taste of death but once."

Mantle gives examples of everyday acts of courage that you may never have thought of. It causes the reader to look at life in a more pro-active way. If you were to read only one book on courage, this should be it.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL !.......2004-07-01

This is a truly moving, inspirational and heartrendering book. It reads like a Greek Tragedy, but is so real because the Authors were there. Written by Mickey's wife Merlyn, and his 3 surviving sons, it is by far the most honest work regarding Mickey. This book is so much more important that that trashy, tabloid like "Mickey Mantle: America's Prodigal Son" by Tony Castro, that I would suggest you never bother with that thing. Besides, Castro took most of his book directly from this one.

This story is also one of the finest studies of the dysfunction in an alcoholic family, with all the roles being lived out and understood by the participants. These are real, caring and heroic people, not because of baseball, but because they became winners in life by facing their problems together. A great, great book!

5 out of 5 stars Mantle the Amazing.......2003-05-02

Mickey Mantle's wife, Merlyn, and their sons tell the unique and inspirational story of their very separate, often harrowing private lives with the husband and father that was there for them through their lives before cancer took him away. Merlyn and the boys discuss how the effects of alcohol and the spotlight of fame play a role on him and how they all came to be. Merlyn talks about Mickey Mantle the most because they were the closest, and she discusses what she went through as a wife and as a mother. The boys tell their vivid stories of what they can remember while the father was emotionally and physically absent. The dexterous Mickey, played ball everyday and is still a very well-known name in the histroy of baseball. This story explains his lief and career while alcohol impacted himself physically, hi gamily, and his life mentally. It also touches base on his career achievements and how he became the amazing Mickey Mantle.

5 out of 5 stars His Most Heroic Role Ever.......1999-03-31

I have read several books on Mickey Mantle and this one is one of the best. Mickey's story is one of the best in baseball and he remains one of the most popular players in history. This book is an excellent look at the effects of fame and alcohol on the family and how the family members came to grips with things. The stories presented here are told by his wife Merlyn and his sons. Through his family, Mickey's story lives on and he continues to inspire us.

5 out of 5 stars MICKEY MANTLE WAS A GREAT.......1999-02-13

I'm only 13, and Mickey Mantle is my favorite baseball player to live. I have read about 6 books on the "Commerce Comet" and this book is exceptional. In the first chapter the Mick talks about his alchohol abuse. Then Marilyn talks about her highschool sweetheart. This is a great book.

5 out of 5 stars A remarkable look inside the personal life of The Mick.......1998-11-24

I have read most of the books written by Mickey and when I picked this one up I was not quite ready for it's contents. The first chapter, written by Mickey himself address his views on his alcoholism and subsequent recovery.

The following chapters by Merlyn and one by each of his surviving sons was indeed an eye openner into his private life. A lot of information I had not known before was given first hand by his family members.

It took a great deal of courage on their parts to put this book into print and although their lives were not what we might have imagined, it still showed Mick's heart felt side and the love he held for his family and the respect and love they hold for an American Icon.

A must reading for Mantle fans and a true story of courage.

Book Description

To everyone who truly loves the game, Mickey Mantle epitomizes the golden age of baseball, when the mighty New York Yankees indisputably ruled, appearing in an unprecedented twelve World Series in fourteen years! In this intimate memoir, Mantle recounts the joys and trials of his rise from rural Oklahoma youngster to the pinnacle of baseball greatness.

In All My Octobers, the one and only Mick relives every one of his World Series appearances -- from the 1951 battle when he played alongside an aging Joe DiMaggio to his three-home-run performance in the 1964 showdown. In addition to the on-field heroics, Mantle talks candidly about the injuries, the alcohol, the parties and celebrations, and the terrible toll they can take on a young athlete's life. But most of all, it is a remembrance of October greatness, of postseason pyrotechnics . . . and a loving appreciation of a team of titans that achieved something marvelous and unequaled to this day.

5 out of 5 stars All My Octobers.......2007-06-27

I was a Big Mickey Mantle fan back when he first came up to the Yankees as a 19 year old.
He immediately had an impact on me. As a young boy he was my idol.

I just began reading the book, and am already impressed with all the won- derful memories of the great Mickey Mantle.

The book is great!, and I expect no less, as I continue to read on.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful read for any baseball fan........2006-08-27

Love 'em or hate 'em, the New York Yankees are an integral slice of Americana. The superstars seem to shine brighter there than in other markets. They transcend sports and become a part of American life. From Ruth and Gehrig's dominance of the Roaring 20s to Joltin' Joe Dimaggio's hitting clinics of the 30s, 40s, and 50s, to Mantle and Maris in the 60s, and finally the resurgance of recent days, the baseball world hangs in the balance of what the Yanks ultimate destiny is on a yearly basis.

With the exception of Ruth, it is entirely possible that no one figure captured the baseball world's imagination to the same degree as Mickey Mantle. From his humble beginnings to his majestic homeruns, "The Mick" had something for every baseball fan and he displayed it all while wearing the famed pinstripes in a total of 12 World Series.

Not every World Series was won and Mickey certainly illustrates that he was far from perfect, both on and off the field. It's a wonderful look back to the Golden Era of baseball and an inside perspective of an age of sports that will never be seen again.

Fully recommended!

4 out of 5 stars What about him!.......2000-01-06

An interviewer asked Yogi Berra to do word association. The interviewer's first words were Mickey Mantle. Yogi's association was - What about him?

Mickey takes us through his World Series appearances - 1951 when he permanently injured his knee, 1952 when Jackie Robinson told the press that Mantle beat the Dodgers and that the Yankees didn't miss DiMaggio, 1953 with Mickey's tape measure homeruns, 1955 when the long suffering Brooklyn Dodgers won their only World Series, 1956 when the umpire gave Don Larsen that final strike, 1957 when Yankee reject Lew Burdette beat the Yanks, 1958 when Bob Turley returned the favor by beating the Braves, 1960 when Casey failed to use Ford 3 times against the Pirates, causing the most heartbreaking disappointment in Mantle's baseball career, 1961 when Maris outpaced Mantle and substitutes won the World Series, 1962 when McCovey lined out to Richardson, 1963 when they ran into Koufax-Podres-Drysdale-Koufax, and 1964 when Whitey had a sore arm and couldn't pitch to St Louis.

Mickey blamed himself for failing to do rehab on his legs. He endured constant pain, and it was a miracle that he had a baseball career at all. He rated himself as equal to Mays in fielding, faster than Mays on the bases, but without the longevity.

If you look at the incredible Yankee dynasty of the 1950s you see a team that wasn't great on paper. The Cleveland Indians were at times as good or better. The Brooklyn Dodgers had much better hitting. It wasn't like the awesome Yankee teams of 1998 and 1999. The Yankees of Mickey's day had no business winning so many pennants and world championships. What they had was Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford, Gil McDougald, and above all Mickey Mantle.

Did you ever see him swing a bat? He hit the ball harder than Babe Ruth. He had the best swing in history, combining the grace of Ken Griffey Jr. with the power of ...... of nobody but Mickey Mantle. McGwire is a deep popup artist like Babe Ruth was. Mantle would drive the ball through a brick wall. He was the most powerful hitter who ever lived, and had the Olympic class speed of Rickey Henderson.
