dead funny.......2007-06-27
one of the funniest books I have ever read, so convincing you start to think that brooks is out of his mind.
Just remember: Shoot 'em in the head........2007-06-26
As a child I watched Jonny Quest. The "Curse of Anubis" episode, in which a mummy re-animates to exact revenge on grave robbers, was my first introduction to zombies. It also spawned my first nightmare (or, at least, the earliest one I remember).
I thoroughly enjoyed the Zombie Survival Guide--it's well-researched, creative, and moves right along.
We can argue about whether zombies exist, but anyone who has spent time in sales meetings, schoolboard meetings, political debates, or airplanes is likely to believe that the undead do indeed walk the earth. If you've ever had the nagging feeling that people in the room wanted to eat your brain, you know what I mean.
Even if you don't believe that zombies are real, don't you wish they were?
Your life might depend on this book.......2007-06-18
I have been waiting for almost two decades now for the dead to rise. I truely beleive my calling in life will come when the undead walk. Though I enjoyed this book and I highly recomend it to the untrained, I have been shapening my skills for quite sometime now and this book served as reinforcement. If anybody knows a way of bringing the dead back please do so. I have my weapons, a pick up truck and several kegs of beer ready to go. Thanks
A Very Good Book.......2007-06-18
This is a very interesting book to read, it show you how to protect yourself in a zombie attack.
How to book for would be zombie hunters.......2007-06-18
I purchased this book for my boyfriend. He is interested in Zombies and he read the whole book in one weekend. The tone is so realistic, I almost believe in zombies. Great fun.

Book Description
The bestselling author of Ilium and Olympos transforms the true story of a legendary Arctic expedition into a thriller worthy of Stephen King or Patrick O'Brian.
Their captain's insane vision of a Northwest Passage has kept the crewmen of The Terror trapped in Arctic ice for two years without a thaw. But the real threat to their survival isn't the ever-shifting landscape of white, the provisions that have turned to poison before they open them, or the ship slowly buckling in the grip of the frozen ocean. The real threat is whatever is out in the frigid darkness, stalking their ship, snatching one seaman at a time or whole crews, leaving bodies mangled horribly or missing forever.
Captain Crozier takes over the expedition after the creature kills its original leader, Sir John Franklin. Drawing equally on his own strengths as a seaman and the mystical beliefs of the Eskimo woman he's rescued, Crozier sets a course on foot out of the Arctic and away from the insatiable beast. But every day the dwindling crew becomes more deranged and mutinous, until Crozier begins to fear there is no escape from an ever-more-inconceivable nightmare.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting book.......2007-06-27
The book is very well written and displays a very good research upon the facts that brought the 1845 Franklin Expedition to such a disastrous end. Through 'The Terror', one can feel like really being trapped in the ice and fighting against a cruel environment and all sorts of difficulties that were common in a low-tech age.
Dan Simmons' writing is elegant, colorful and able to entertain the reader, through a clever structure that evolves around Capt. Crozier and the secondary characters. It brings a very good dynamics to the story and I was got stuck to the point of reading it non-stop.
However, those more acquainted with the real story of that ill-fated expedition might not like entirely the fictional element of terror. It turns rather 'too much' fantastic a real story which would be amazing just by itself.
Nonetheless, 'The Terror' is good fun and a good incentive for those who wish to go further on one of the greatest mysteries (and miseries!) of the Polar Exploration History, still not completely solved to our days.
Simmons is back in the saddle again.......2007-06-26
Superb evocation of the failure of a real 19th century polar expedition to find the famed Northwest Passage, turned into a supernatural horror thriller.
The imagery on some of the horror scenes owe a lot to John Carpenter's The Thing, especially the first one where the monster just rises up from nowhere to crush its victim. And Simmons does a great job of keeping up the suspense of what the nasty polar beastie will do next.
He paints a realistic background of Royal Navy ships on a polar mission and of their equipment and crew. Along the way, he skewers the class system that puts an incompetent commander in charge. I also loved the way he immerses the reader into the scientific viewpoint of the day, especially medical science. Franklin aside, this a technically competent and handpicked crew and their world view on 19th century science is fascinating.
But the real joy in the book is discovering what is happening, how the various POV characters react to it and their interactions. The timeline of the chapters allows the story to jump into the action quickly, with the monster appearing in the first few chapters. But it also keeps you hooked by gradually filling in the back story (bit like 'Lost' which I am currently watching). The characters are complex, most of all Crozier who has many flaws and qualities. Some, like the assistant surgeon, rise above themselves. Some, like Erebus's captain, fail to respond to the challenges faced. And a few are just plain evil and stupid. But most stoically endure extreme conditions, long past the breaking point and those men are a tribute to the real polar explorers.
I found the length of the book to be quite acceptable (I was done in four days). Those who want action packed pages may be disappointed. However its size is justified by the complexity of the story and background. I have come to dislike needlessly long books but that's not the case here. For example, given that the ships were really most likely lost due to bad food supplies, it is reasonable to cover procurement procedures in detail. That said, it is a long book and readers do need to be patient and tolerant of background trivia.
Re. the use of the polar monster, I think that it was a necessary plot device. Without the monster, the story would descend into an endless litany of gray, hopeless, suffering. With it, the story is leavened with spots of bright red terror and suspense. Nobody really knows the details of what happened to the Franklin Expedition and having the monster around shows that Simmons does not pretend to write a real history. Terror's captain, Crozier, is also clearly the hero here and the monster justifies why he is unable to pull off a Shackleton-type trek. Finally, the last chapters, though a bit too metaphysical for my taste, allow Simmons to write a much more optimistic ending than would be the case otherwise. And, as a bonus, it even allows him to take an ever so fashionable swipe at global warming.
Dan Simmons has written a thoroughly enjoyable book without the annoying flaws of some of his recent books. The story is tight and has a logical, well-crafted conclusion. As ever, Simmons is quite the literary erudite, but he plays it down: readers will find references to Poe and Hobbs, but the characters thankfully refrain from spouting off lit-speak this time. This is a much less self-indulgent book than Endymion and Ilium/Olympos.
What made it all the better for me is that I have visited St. Roch, the second ship to make it through the Northwest Passage (in 1940-42), in the Vancouver Maritime Museum. And, yes, they do talk about the Franklin Expedition and blame its loss on lead poisoning. I also recommend reading Wikipedia's various entries as they supplement the book quite well.
p.s. Anybody have a clue what the corpse with the unnaturally long teeth is about, at the end?
Please Dan Simmons give us more!.......2007-06-23
I absolutely SAVORED this novel. I can breeze through a four hundred page book in one night so this was a godsend. Disregard complaints of "long windedness" because every chapter, every page, every paragraph draws you deeper into the setting, rich characters, twisting plot, and titillation. I am so exhausted with two dimensional, formulaic, transparent plots that read like the National Enquirer as opposed to the New York Times. Suffice it to say this is an absorbing, fascinating, unorthodox novel that should be enjoyed at your leisure like a fine wine. If your into a quick, predictable plot you will not be satisfied....if you are after true quality you will be ecstatic.
Not Chilling Enough.......2007-06-22
The various early polar expeditions have always fascinated me. I think I read my first book about these when I was about eleven. So seeing this one by an author I respect for his verisimilitude in several genres and his very literate prose in all of them, I snatched this one up expecting a great read. I wish I hadn't.
The first problem with this book is the non-linear chapters in the early portion of the book. Simmons switches forward and back in time, now detailing 'current' events out on the ice, now things that happened prior to the expedition's departure, now switching to time points in-between. The problem with this is that there is no good reason to mix up the order this way - it would have read better (and much less confusingly, with more suspense) if he had kept to chronological order.
Second is the multitude of point-of-view characters. There are simply too many of them, which especially in the early portion of the book merely adds to the confusion caused by the non-linearity.
Third is the lack of either a sense of true horror or great deprivation, the latter being almost a given in just about every other polar expedition work I've read. His `monster' just didn't send chills up my spine, and for all his detailing of temperatures and ice conditions I just never felt the cold.
And this book is just simply too long. It needed to have a couple of hundred pages snipped, which would have improved the pacing considerably, which as it stands is almost glacial in spots.
There are some things that are good here. His characterization is quite good, most notably that of Captain Crozier and Dr. Goodsir. The book is obviously well researched; many of the details about the outfitting of this expedition are fascinating and informative. His prose is, as is usual for him, clear and literate, and many of the allusions and quotes he scatters around are very appropriate. But the problems of this book are just too weighty to be uplifted by these good things, leaving me quite disappointed.

In Serious Need of Editing.......2007-06-17
I cannot help but wonder how long this book would have been had Mr. Simmons chosen to restrict himself to retelling the same thing to only every other chapter, or every third chapter, or perhaps only once? As a reader I did not feel I needed to be beaten over the head with constant reminders of just how bad things were for these men. Once was enough, thank you very much. The story moves at such a snail's pace one cannot help but identify with the tedium and agony these men went though. At least my suffering ended when they abandoned ship - I abandoned the book.

Book Description
Percy Jackson's seventh-grade year has been surprisingly quiet. Not a single monster has set foot on his New York prep-school campus. But when an innocent game of dodgeball among Percy and his classmates turns into a death match against an ugly gang of cannibal giants, things get . . . well, ugly. And the unexpected arrival of Percy's friend Annabeth brings more bad news: the magical borders that protect Camp Half-Blood have been poisoned by a mysterious enemy, and unless a cure is found, the only safe haven for demigods will be destroyed.
In this fresh, funny, and hugely anticipated follow up to The Lightning Thief, Percy and his friends must journey into the Sea of Monsters to save their beloved camp. But first, Percy will discover a stunning new secret about his family -- one that makes him question whether being claimed as Poseidon's son is an honor or simply a cruel joke.

THE SEA OF MONSTERS RICK RIORDAN
12-year-old Percy Jackson has always been a little strange being the son of Poseidon and everything, but oddly this year has been normal. He hasen't been attacked by a monster all year and it is the last day of school. His normal streak ends when a dodge ball game turns into mass mayhem and a struggle for life. After nearly getting killed he sets of on a journey with his friends Annabeth, daughter of Athena and Tyson a Cyclops to save there camp. Can he save their camp or will it be destroyed along with Mount Olympus? What is the Golden Fleece and what does it have to do with the sea of monsters? The shocking conclusion to the book could mean the world is saved or it could mean Kronos the titan lord will destroy all of western civilization.
I enjoyed this book so much I was sad when I was finished. It is an exciting story of Greek mythology mixed with a modern flair. It is one of the greatest fantasy stories since Harry Potter. I guarantee you'll love this book!
I recommend this story to anyone loving the genres of adventure, mystery and comedy. It is a great book for ages 9 to 99 with its great use of words. Fantasy lovers must read ...

Book Description
CAN I GET A “RAMEN” FROM THE CONGREGATION?!
Behold the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM), today’s fastest growing carbohydrate-based religion. According to church founder Bobby Henderson, the universe and all life within it were created by a mystical and divine being: the Flying Spaghetti Monster. What drives the FSM’s devout followers, a.k.a. Pastafarians? Some say it’s the assuring touch from the FSM’s “noodly appendage.” Then there are those who love the worship service, which is conducted in pirate talk and attended by congregants in dashing buccaneer garb. Still others are drawn to the Church’s flimsy moral standards, religious holidays every Friday, or the fact that Pastafarian heaven is way cooler: Does your heaven have a Stripper Factory and a Beer Volcano? Intelligent Design has finally met its match–and it has nothing to do with apes or the Olive Garden of Eden.
Within these pages, Bobby Henderson outlines the true facts– dispelling such malicious myths as evolution (“only a theory”), science (“only a lot of theories”), and whether we’re really descended from apes (fact: Humans share 95 percent of their DNA with chimpanzees, but they share 99.9 percent with pirates!)

I was already a convert before... but now I have refrences!.......2007-06-12
I heard about FSMism (pastafarianism) about a month before I got the book and laughed and laughed as I read the letter to the school board and the info on wikipedia about it...
but really you cant explain it the right way until you read the book.
if you tell people about the FSM and they look at you funny and you wanted good scientific proof to show them that he does exist... it's time to get the book! :)
RAmen my fellow pirates, wenches, midgets, and believers!
Very funny.......2007-06-09
Very funny - lots of great explanations of gravity, etc. Definitely more than you have otherwise read, all from the Prophet's pen!
Bobby Henderson is a Genius.......2007-05-13
Bobby Henderson is a bona fide 24ct Gold satirical genius.
With the Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster he holds the mirror up to organised religion (and indeed religion generally) and invites everyone to take a look.
He shows us that all religion really is is smoke and mirrors and that when the smoke clears all you have left is mirrors. Oh and Pirates, a stripper factory and beer volcanoes as far as the eye can see.
If yo have read Richard Dawkins and enjoyed him and if you have read Douglas Adams and enjoyed him give Bobby Henderson's the Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster a read. You won't be disappointed.
RAmen.
Living my life by it.......2007-05-13
For the price the book is worth $100 for every letter in it. I'm now sailing off into the sunset knowing my life is worthwhile. I laughed so hard that Tuscan Whole Milk came spewing out of my nose. My noodly god would have been proud of me!!! I can say I have so much more free times on sundays now that I'm not attending services. I have found I can go out sailing, searching for my burried treasure and god willing bring back a Mermaid.
From The Book's Frontispiece..........2007-04-28
"In the Beginning was the Word, and the Word was 'Arrrgh!'" - Piraticus 13:7
The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster raises many pressing questions of our time, including:
* Who exactly are the Pirate Lords?
* Where will the Pirate Brethren Court be held?
* What is the meaning of the 9 pieces of 8?
* Who shall be voted the Pirate King?
* Who is Calypso, and who shall be the next Davey Jones?
* What if instead of giving the command to "Firrre!", we all had to cry out loud "Flying Spaghetti Monsterrrr!!" for our cannons to go off?
* Would we get enough of our "firrre!"ing done to win the battle?
* And isn't it a strange thing that one of the most commonly used meanings of the word "faithful" in our society is "to be honest"?
The answers to these questions and many more are contained in Henderson's important translation of the original testamentary Pirate text.
Note: This review was actually written and posted on May 27th after seeing a certain movie, but the FSM keeps using His Noodly Appendage to push back the date shown by one month. And who am I to argue with His Divine Pastafarian Purpose for me?

The 1964 Caldecott Medal Winner for the Most Distinguished Picture Book of the Year by Maurice Sendak. Brian O'Doherty of The New York Times said the Mr. Sendak's work "disguised in fantasy, springs from his earliest self, from the vagrant child that lurks in the heart of all of us."
Amazon.com
Where the Wild Things Are is one of those truly rare books that can be enjoyed equally by a child and a grown-up. If you disagree, then it's been too long since you've attended a wild rumpus. Max dons his wolf suit in pursuit of some mischief and gets sent to bed without supper. Fortuitously, a forest grows in his room, allowing his wild rampage to continue unimpaired. Sendak's color illustrations (perhaps his finest) are beautiful, and each turn of the page brings the discovery of a new wonder.
The wild things--with their mismatched parts and giant eyes--manage somehow to be scary-looking without ever really being scary; at times they're downright hilarious. Sendak's defiantly run-on sentences--one of his trademarks--lend the perfect touch of stream of consciousness to the tale, which floats between the land of dreams and a child's imagination.
This Sendak classic is more fun than you've ever had in a wolf suit, and it manages to reaffirm the notion that there's no place like home.

A Must-Have.......2007-05-25
If you are a good parent you must get a copy of "Where The Wild Things Are". This is a story of a very bad boy's day of imaginative roll playing and final acceptance of his place in the real world. I love reading it to my children and watching as their little faces lit up in recognition of adventures they had endured during their own periods of bad behavior... Check it out and get it for your little "darlings". Another MUST HAVE for your children is the series Why Some Cats are Rascals ( Book 3) by Nowiki. Very captivating and touching stories showing the world with cats eyes. Other great titles: A Giraffe and a Half, Dragon Rider,
Why Some Cats are Rascals, Book 1, Why Some Cats are Rascals, Book 2

Book Description
For 1,600 years its message lay hidden. When the bound papyrus pages of this lost gospel finally reached scholars who could unlock its meaning, they were astounded. Here was a gospel that had not been seen since the early days of Christianity, and which few experts had even thought existed–a gospel told from the perspective of Judas Iscariot, history’s ultimate traitor. And far from being a villain, the Judas that emerges in its pages is a hero.
In this radical reinterpretation, Jesus asks Judas to betray him. In contrast to the New Testament Gospels, Judas Iscariot is presented as a role model for all those who wish to be disciples of Jesus. He is the one apostle who truly understands Jesus.
This volume is the first publication of the remarkable gospel since it was condemned as heresy by early Church leaders, most notably by St. Irenaeus, in 180. Hidden away in a cavern in Middle Egypt, the codex (or book) containing the gospel was discovered by farmers in the 1970s. In the intervening years the papyrus codex was bought and sold by antiquities traders, hidden away, and carried across three continents, all the while suffering damage that reduced much of it to fragments. In 2001, it finally found its way into the hands of a team of experts who would painstakingly reassemble and restore it.
The Gospel of Judas has been translated from its original Coptic in clear prose, and is accompanied by commentary that explains its fascinating history in the context of the early Church, offering a whole new way of understanding the message of Jesus Christ.
Customer Reviews:
Early Christianity.......2007-05-13
This gives a more detailed commentary on the Judas Gospel than is possible in a TV show or magazine article, and of course the footnotes lead one on to a more detailed study!
I don't get it..........2007-04-15
I commend National Geographic et al for the amazing work they did on deciphering the Gospel of Judas, and yes this book is wonderfully written so that all may understand... but I don't get it. Everything I am reading on the Gospel of Judas seems to be implying that he was Jesus's friend who understood Jesus's message like no other apostle and that Jesus asked him to do what he did... but if Judas truly understood Jesus as my interpretation of the Gospel of Judas implies... then why would he have any guilt/the answer is he shouldn't, and therefore, why would he hang himself? The answer is he wouldn't. This is a great book as are many other's on the Gospel of Judas. I think you should keep an open mind and buy it and read it. I think you should buy another Gospel of Judas book and read it and compare them...
A Timely Revelation.......2007-03-01
I found the information most useful and it is refreshing to see that Judas was not a scapegoat. Having done a tremendous amount of research, I appreciate this revelation that goes hand in hand with Secrets of the Magdalene Scrolls. Perhaps one day the truth will fully be revealed.
Dumbstruck.......2007-02-21
As Elaine Pagels says (whose own book about this is due out soon): astonishing. I am certainly astonished and once again thrown back to a book I read over a year ago, maybe more, one that's been been bought by a big house, Random House I think, and also coming out soon. The Secret Magdalene portrays Judas just as this ancient gnostic text did, and the author of the book, Ki Longfellow, had never heard of this newly found material. How could she then have written her Judas as she did? When she was writing her book about Mary Magdalene, no one knew these material existed. (I wrote the author to verify what I'm writing here.) What this means to me is that The Secret Magdalene is even more incredible than I thought it was the first time round. What it also means to me is that things are changing for us so rapidly, some of us are going to get lost: fundies, mostly. And some of us are going to get found: by ourselves. Again, amazing. Can't wait to read Pagels comments on these texts. Now intend to read The Secret Magdalene again when it comes out in March sometime. Damn.
Why I Love "The Gospel of Judas".......2007-02-07
I love "The Gospel of Judas" because it underscores just how much Christians need the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit can help Christians discern the difference between true doctrine and false doctrine. The Gospel of Judas falls firmly in the latter category. The Gospel of Judas itself is very short; only about 25 pages of the 180+ page book. The majority of the book is comprised of commentary from biblical scholars. What true Christian can take seriously any writing that portrays Jesus as an arrogant and condescending prophet? The Gospel of Judas describes Jesus as laughing at his disciples and belittling them. I truly hope that Hollywood turns this book into a movie. I would be first in line to boycott it!

How to make a better Monster Manual.......2003-07-18
A: Include all monsters from the previous edition's manual
B: Introduce a few new and interesting monsters (10-40 would suffice)
C: Make the layout flip-friendly for rushing GMs
D: Make sure the monsters go beyond combat statistics (as in their habitats are listed, form of society, mating and etc. Like a National Geographic Mag.)
I think if at least one of these is followed, it's worth the same as the original. If all are followed, it's a goldmine. I have the great annoyance to tell you that none of these were followed.
There are 1/3 the number monsters in the new manual as the old one (I hear that if you add this manual, 2, and the Monsters of Faerun books together you get almost as many as the old 2nd edition MM.) I believe that the creators argued "The original MM only had 40 monsters in it!" My answer to this is simple: the first edition didn't have 25+ years of books and two editions in front of it to help.
The new monsters (which ended up drowning out old favorites) are way too underpowered or overpowered, lack depth, and generally seem a little too sci-fi (remember, this is a fantasy game)
The layout definately sucks, it took me an hour to find anything. One monster a page is definately a better road to travel.
Last but not least, the monsters BARELY go beyond the numbers. I suggest you either buy all three of the above mentioned "Monster Manuals" (have fun shuffling books!) or just play 2nd edition AD&D.
Tons of Monsters...Yet Lacking.......2003-06-07
The Third Edition (3E) Monster Manual is a great purchase for any DM. It has a good amount of monsters, pretty descriptive stats, yet...it seems one caliber less than the 2E Monster Manual.
On one hand, the 3E Monster Manual delivers over 200 monsters to terrorize your campaign setting. They have some awesome new monsters. My personal favorite, is a devil, and is known as a Kyton. He is demonic humanoid with hundreds of chains drooping from his body, and his mode of attack is flailing those chains. Pretty hardcore.
On the other hand, the 3E Monster Manual doesn't seem to give enough. Some of the monsters just plain [are bad], and they aren't unique in any way. Also, the amount of creatures do not come near the amount that were in the 2E monster manual, which is frustrating.
On the FINAL hand, It is a must for any DM playing 3E. It isn't a bad book at all...it just seems lacking. The monster stats are good...the amount of monsters are good...but don't expect much more. (If they had 3.5 stars I would give this book 3.5)
Content: Meh... Book Quality: HORRIBLE.......2003-02-04
Being someone new to the Dungeons and Dragons scene, I had great hope and joy when I opened my amazon.com package containing the Player's Handbook (PHB) and the Monster Manual (MM).
First note: all the D&D books are quite hard to understand without playing first. That would be why you buy the "Adventure Game" using the same ruleset. The MM is the shortest of the D&D books, which makes sense, as it mostly talks only about monsters. The content is hard to understand first hand, however it is quite detailed.
Now, we go onto the quality of the book. Both the DM Guide and the PHB have a hard cover binding and high-quality full-colored pages. The MM has this too, but in my recent experiences, the binding at the spine (the binding that is holding the pages together) is quite loose. So loose that in fact, one player of mine has all the pages completely out of the binding. True, out of 12 NEW MM's that I have seen, all of them had an extremely loose binding, especially with the pages in the back. You can see the rope that is holding the pages together there. Just note: a lot of the pages in this book will fall out with heavy use. something not too normal with hardcover books.
My suggestion, since you are looking at this, is to wait until July 2003, where a new, revised MM will be avaliable. That MM will have 108 more pages, and hopefully a better binding with that many pages. All the D&D core rulebooks are being revised and released in July 2003 (at the end of the month). If you want the D&D books right now, then I suggest the Player's Handbook, the Dungeon Master's Guide, and the Monster Manual II. The MM II will not be revised, and was released recently, so it will be easier to understand. If there is one rulebook that you should not buy, it would be this one. Wait for July 2003 and reap the rewards.
Least of the Three.......2003-01-08
The Monster Manual is labelled a core rulebook, and it truly is. Without the description and rules within, a DM would be hard-pressed to create the creatures necessary to challenge her players at various levels. The book is beautiful and well-laid-out, as you would expect from the other core books. The rules section in the front is short and concise, as most of the rules have been explained in the previous two books.
Therein, actually, is my biggest complaint about the book. I feel that, unlike the DMG, far too little explanation is given in the MM about how to create new monsters and balance them against each other. Even sketchy guidelines like the magic item creation rules in the DMG would have been a wonderful addition to the book. As it is, you can only create a monster, then compare it to all the other monsters of a comparable skill level, and guess whether yours is about right. It's a good metric, but it's cumbersome.
The third core book, I feel, has too much in the way of tables and not enough in terms of flavor text and rules explanation. While still a great resource for what it is, I think it is lacking the flare that made the first two core books a pleasure to own.

EXCELLENT SERVICE!!!.......2007-06-15
Everything was here faster than all other orders and in great shape!!!
Fun Nerdom.......2007-05-25
If you like D&D this book will be plain old nerdy fun. For the best monsters to fight and funtastic battles this is a good one.
I bought this book for my boyfriend's 25th birthday. He wants to try his hand at DM-ing a game this summer and of course you'll need a monster manual. Ah, the memories.
Fine Book.......2007-05-10
This book is a work of art, and that's just looking at the text. The monsters are much easier to use, with details like their flatfooted AC and their grappling bonus included in their stats. The only thing bad I can say about this book is they removed the two pieces of Elmore art. Maybe they thought it made the other art look bad by comparison.
VERY GOOD.......2007-01-27
this book offers many creative monsters and also a lot of new monster rules too.
nice rework of the classic.......2007-01-12
This is a nice rework for the 3.5 rules. The classic monster manual is an essential for D20 gaming, not much they could do to ruin it. My only complaint is that the binding could have been done better, why make a reference manual that can't stand up to the page flipping a reference book will be subjected to? If you go to your local used book store you'll find monster manuals from 15 years ago that have a better binding than the current ones being produced, that's just cheap and lame of WOTC.

"Monster" is what the prosecutor called 16-year-old Steve Harmon for his supposed role in the fatal shooting of a convenience-store owner. But was Steve really the lookout who gave the "all clear" to the murderer, or was he just in the wrong place at the wrong time? In this innovative novel by Walter Dean Myers, the reader becomes both juror and witness during the trial of Steve's life. To calm his nerves as he sits in the courtroom, aspiring filmmaker Steve chronicles the proceedings in movie script format. Interspersed throughout his screenplay are journal writings that provide insight into Steve's life before the murder and his feelings about being held in prison during the trial. "They take away your shoelaces and your belt so you can't kill yourself no matter how bad it is. I guess making you live is part of the punishment."
Myers, known for the inner-city classic Motown and Didi (first published in 1984), proves with Monster that he has kept up with both the struggles and the lingo of today's teens. Steve is an adolescent caught up in the violent circumstances of an adult world--a situation most teens can relate to on some level. Readers will no doubt be attracted to the novel's handwriting-style typeface, emphasis on dialogue, and fast-paced courtroom action. By weaving together Steve's journal entries and his script, Myers has given the first-person voice a new twist and added yet another worthy volume to his already admirable body of work. (Ages 12 and older) --Jennifer Hubert

Steve (Voice-Over)
Sometimes I feel like I have walked into the middle of a movie. Maybe I can make my own movie. The film will be the story of my life. No, not my life, but of this experience. I'll call it what the lady prosecutor called me ...
Monster.
Customer Reviews:
Confusing, bewildering, and intense.......2007-06-26
One would think that these aspects make "Monster" a bad book. But they don't. They're what make "Monster" an original, heart-moving, emotional book. The style makes it stand out, once you remember the characters and what the little comments mean. A movie-script format? It's not dumb - it's interesting, original, and gets everything across.
"Monster", as you've probably seen, is about a teenage boy on trial for armed robbery and possibly second-degree murder. Throughout the book (which is almost always set in the trial, though occasionally we get flashbacks, and every once in a while we get a moment of Steve writing down his thoughts), Steve insists that he's innocent. Throughout the book, though, we don't really find out. The ending leaves the reader mystified and asking themselves so many questions.
Perhaps that's what sent other readers packing. On the other hand, what fun is a story if it doesn't make you think? "Monster" certainly made me think. I sat down and thought about the jury, about the lawyers, about the witnesses. I sat down and thought about the judge and other accused. I thought about if I was on the jury and had had this evidence placed before me, what would I pick? This book made me THINK.
It's an intense read. It's realistic, powerful, and emotional. I found myself crying during moments Steve was. I felt so connected to him, even though most of what we know is through speech and dialogue. I was drawn into this book so well.
This is a great read and a great buy. I highly recommend it.
Monster .......2007-06-06
Steve Harmon is on trial, and in jail for murder. Steve is only 16. Steve begins to realize the facts of the trial are very unbalenced. He also wonders, "Maybe the reason I'm is on trial is because of my rase." This book is a combination of Steve's journal entrees and a play written by Steve. This is a wonderful deep book that I enjoyed immensely! It descries Harlem and the raceisum Steve encounters. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about the real issues in the world.

Title: Monster
Author: Walter Dean Myers
Harper Collins publisher Inc.
Copyright 1999
Pages: 281
The wrong place at the wrong time could change your life. Steve Harmon is a sixteen year old African male in the violent streets of Harlem, New York. A clerk is dead, gunned down by robbers. All the judge needs is eyes and evidence, and Steve does twenty 4five to life.
All the parts in this book are pretty good, because it leads up to the end, which is the best part, to see if Steve is guilty or not. It's crazy, because your heart starts racing, like you have to be careful what you read, like words are important at that point of the book.
This book is really about adapting to change, pressure, and experience you shouldn't be experiencing until about twenty five years old. This is how a sixteen year old saw another side of his world.
I like different, and this book has that unique. It's good because in the end everything comes together. Flashbacks are involved to make you think. In my opinion everybody would like this book, I mean everybody, from jailbirds to grandparents. I wouldn't change anything about this book.
my review for monster.......2007-06-05
monster is about a sixteen yearold boy who is in jail because he is thought to be in a murder at a store. this author writes this book like a typewritting person in court. the boys name is steven. steven writes his life in jail and his life while he's in court. in this book it has many many different characters so you have to make up many voices for those characters. if you like books like with people in court and need to make many different voices and if you like murder mysteries this book is perfect for you. this book has twists and turns in it. the main characters are steven, king, bobo, the lawyers, and the judge. stevens life story is called monster just like the books title.
Monster Review.......2007-06-05
I thought Monster was a really good book and that it's an award winning book. It was about a boy who was sent to jail for murder and was facing court for the verdict of whether he was a free man or not. It was a good book mainly because, of how it was written and the fact that it was about a 16 year old boy who was sent to prison for being accused of murder and was going to court for his freedom. His part in the "crime" or murder was to check if the store was clear so that a murder could take place. After this event he was to face the judge and tell why he was not guilty and where he was at the time of the crime. I think this is a really good book to read because, it shows what can happen if you commit a crime and what it's like to be in jail. This book is very inspiring and interesting which is why I think it is a good also the fact that it tells why you should not commit crimes and murder or steal just by reading what happened to this boy Steve Harmon.
