One of the most useful and helpful guidelines out there.......2007-05-31
If you have no need to communicate with anyone in this world, then this book is bound to be a waste. But, but, but - for all other situations this is a priceless addition to your library. Contains useful advice and explanations on how to communicate better both in personal and professional settings. Of course, the recommendations and suggestions need to be tweaked according to your personality and lifestyle, but mostly this works well, and there aren't too many books out there that do a better job. Go and get your own copy - you will thank me later!
Crucial Conversations: Breakthrough communications needed for today.......2007-05-27
People talk less and less these days about the things that really matter, the things that inspire and hurt us, and the ending results usually mean break offs in our relationships and jobs. This book is a wake up call to all of us that somehow got the message that it's not ok to talk through things. Simple tips and techniques are offered to help us move past the discomfort of bringing up sensitive topics and onto a path where we can constructively work through issues with the people we are most heavily invested. Halfway through the book, I've begun to implement some of the tips and see a huge positive change in how my efforts are being received. This is both a great business and relationship book...highly recommended to anyone with a relationship worth maintaining.
Good self-help book.......2007-05-19
I know people who really get a lot out of this book. Good book for recognizing and speaking up in high-importance conversations. There's a quiz which clues readers in on where they should concentrate their efforts. However, after the quiz (maybe 20% in to the book) it became very redundant. I was glad my boss paid for it and not me.
A Must-Read.......2007-05-16
I was told about this book by a colleague at work, and I am very glad I took her advice in reading it. It offers steps and strategies to effectively communicate and have important discussions without causing unnecessary conflict and hurt feelings. I have already found this to be helpful in my conversations at work, school, and in my personal life.
Great toolkit for difficult situations.......2007-05-14
This book has provided me with an outline to understand and share tools to help manage difficult conversations. I've found myself learning many of the lessons this book has nicely detailed the hard way, and find that owning this book helps re-enforce lessons I've learned (and learning new lessons) on handling difficult conversations both in the workplace and at home. I would encourage anyone interested in handling their relationships with others better to take a serious look at this book.

Customer Reviews:
The best of the pocket Six Sigma tool guides.......2007-05-26
This text is simply the best of the various pocket Six Sigma tool guides currently available in the marketplace. Although this book is a quick reference guide as the subtitle suggests, there is enough substance here for it to walk on legs and provide learning material for those readers already familiar with basic quality concepts. Quite honestly, I am not sure how the authors arrived at the "Nearly 100 Tools" portion of the subtitle, because the tools presented here can be numbered in various ways. However, this aspect really does not matter. What matters is that all of the major Six Sigma tools are presented with a lot of nice diagrams, graphs, and other figures to give the reader a good sense of the fundamentals of any given tool. These well-encapsulated nuggets of information should serve as excellent memory joggers for some, and good starting points for those needing additional detail available in other texts or online resources. Especially helpful are the numerous brief "tips" sections throughout that point novices in the right direction. Note that the organization of the book might not be well suited for some, because it is not ordered according to the customary steps of the DMAIC process. To some degree, the first chapter points to various sections of the book during its cursory walkthrough of the DMAIC process, although the street signs are not very well planned. Despite some minor flaws, this book serves its purpose well.
The Lean Six Sigma Pocket Toolbook.......2007-05-12
This is an excellent quick reference for Lean and DMAIC projects.
Handy, Practical and Useful Guide for the Practitioner.......2007-03-06
An excellent consolidation of the tools of statistical methods, lean, and problem solving presented in an easy to read and easy to use format. Having developed and taught many seminars on these concepts, I found this to be one of the most useful and practical books on these subjects that I've seen in recent years. It presents just enough information to properly use the tools for one who has some degree of familiarity with them as well as for the newcomer to these concepts.
Concise, to-the-point, very useful.......2007-02-28
This book is very concise and straight to the point. One need not to ponder over thousands of lines to find the definition and application of Lean Six Sigma tools. I am a beginner in Six Sigma and using this book along with my training material.
This book is very much of use when I am looking for a quick refresher or use for some tool, which I think could be of use, but not sure.
Great refresher.......2006-11-17
This is a great book to refresh your memory about the tools. I've had several advanced statistical classes in college and grad school, and the truth is if you don't use it, you lose it. This book hits the high points and includes more than enough information to get you back up and running if you have been away from DOE, ANOVA, and many of the other statistical tools out there. Not a book to read if you trying to learn the tools - again this book is a memory jogger, and a pretty dang good one! As an industrial engineer and lean practitioner, this book has been a great addition to my library!

Book Description
Stewart's CALCULUS: CONCEPTS AND CONTEXTS, Third Edition offers a streamlined approach to teaching calculus, focusing on major concepts and supporting those with precise definitions, patient explanations, and carefully graded problems. CALCULUS: CONCEPTS AND CONTEXTS is highly regarded because it has successfully brought peace to departments that were split between reform and traditional approaches to teaching calculus. Not only does the text help reconcile the two schools of thought by skillfully merging the best of traditional calculus with the best of the reform movement, it does so with innovation and meticulous accuracy.

Poor.......2006-10-25
I taught this class with this book several times, and it makes the material more difficult. It is one of the poorest textbooks available for this class.
It's actually worth the huge price tag.......2006-07-06
I was turned on to Stewart through his excellent multivariable calculus text. Having been so impressed by that book I decided to fork out the bucks for the this text. Yea - I know - the material in this text is a pre-requisite to the other but I own a kazillion mathematics books and at this point in my life, I've been through various levels of Calc so many times that order is irrelevent. Anyway, for me, this book is really worth the huge price tag. I frequently open it up and read it for pleasure. Sick, huh? But it's that good! Stewart is great at chosing examples to work out fully for your eddification. He also is great at selecting interesting and illustrative problems that aren't presumptuous of the student's abilities at clairvoyance (unlike some other textbook authors I could mention). Lastly, the everything about this book reeks of quality: from the mathematical content (btw - it has excellent graphics!) and Stewart's obvious underlying teaching abilities to the physical characteristics of the binding and page materials. The book is a jewell.
Well, I could go on but you probably get the idea. I wish J. Stewart would do a textbook of similar quality on Linear Algebra or better yet, Differential Geometry! That would really destroy the myth that money can't buy happiness.
Good Calculus Book.......2005-09-22
I've learned calculus long time ago, but recently I need it to read a financial book. This book worked for me. I am surprised to know that calculus is easy due to the book's step by step explanation. This book is good not only for readers who learn calculus for the first time but also for poeple who have some experiences. Depneding on your level and purpose, you can read this book like a novel or do all exercises. Only problem I can think of is that this book may not be suitable for people who need to learn pure mathmatics because definitions are not so strict.

Customer Reviews:
Interesting book with lack in details by very self-confident authors.......2007-06-09
When I started reading the book by Oliver Velez and Greg Capra: "Tools and Tactics for the Master Day Trader", I thought it was one of the better books on day trading. It starts out with the importance of discipline, and the lessons to be learnt from losses. It also outlines the concept that you don't buy from the market, but there is always another person on the other side of the trade that has exactly the opposite market expectation as you.
Then come four chapters with lists of rules: 7 deadly sins, 12 trading laws of success, 15 things every trader should know, and 10 lessons for the master trader. Altogether 44 rules, which don't seem to be in any systematic order. It looks like the authors were brainstorming to come up with as many rules as they could think of, and then divided them up among the four chapters. Some rules contradict one another, some important rules are next to irrelevant ones etc. Also the "Seed of Wisdom" does not help to sum up the rules because it often is not related to the part that it is supposed to summarize.
In Chapter 10 and 11 the authors talk about tools and start out by explaining things as basic as a candle stick or support and resistance. Then they dedicate two chapters to Order Systems and Level II data, and it takes until page 293 when they finally talk about trading techniques.
After having talked redundantly about general things for three quarters of the book, the authors give their ideas of entry, stop and exit techniques. What I missed most in this part is the lack of exact trading rules. Everything is expressed vaguely (e.g. p.219 "you can also opt to keep the break-even stop. This is a matter of choice." or p.322 "Sell at least half your stock if and when the stock breaks below the 5-minute low. ... These are just guidelines. We don't want to be stupid. ... Many traders will be best served selling the whole lot at this point."). This is exactly the vagueness you can't afford as a day trader. I was also disappointed that there was so little variety in the trade setups (just three entry techniques).
So my hope was high that in chapter 17 "How to put it all together" there would finally be concrete entry and exit descriptions. Instead, the authors just describe common chart formations like any other book on technical analysis (and do a worse job, too).
Throughout the book I noted an arrogant tone (p. 317: "Let's assume a master trader, let's call him Mr. Velez."). The authors speak about master traders, as if they were some kind of rock stars. No matter, how successful you are, if you quit being humble, the market can easily take everything away from you.
I am giving the book three stars because it does cover important topics for day traders like discipline, and learning from your mistakes. If you want to read a more effective book, however, I recommend the one by John F. Carter "Mastering the Trade".
Seeds of Wisdom!.......2007-05-18
Tools and Tactics for the Master DayTrader: Battle-Tested Techniques for Day, Swing, and Position Traders.
Velez and Capra give me the impression they have traded before and are not just book writer's. You can learn a few pointer's from this book whether you are a rookie or have been trading a while. It covers Candlesticks,Moving Averages, Fibs, Volume and drawing a few trendlines on the charts intraday and daily charts.
It does not go into some of the mathematical stock indicators that some trader's think it might be the "Holy Grail". Sorry, there is no Holy Grail in the stock market you better look elsewhere like yourself. The only "Holy Grail" you will ever find trading stocks is yourself there is no quick fixes to learn to trade stocks it all takes lots of time and practice.
Its to look and observe what a chart's footprints tell you with some seeds of wisdom.
I see so many negative reviews here about this books. I am starting to wonder whether those reader's have ever traded stocks.
I have traded full-time for years and I can tell you they must be all novice trader's hoping that a book might have all the answer's for them and their future. It would help them if they read this book a few times until it sinks in their minds.
Nothing new.......2007-04-18
nothing new, nothing exciting. Everything can be found in books that are half the price. Save your money.
FIVE STARS!!!.......2007-02-27
I would definitely give this book five stars. I really learned alot from it. If you gave it a bad review you either need to go back and read the book again or just skimmed through the book.
and to the person who sid that he "Heard" that they don't actually trade they are wrong and I thought everyone knew not always to believe what they hear. But hey, some people just believe things more easily than others.
and you can't even RATE this book one star because YOU HAVEN'T ACTUALLY READ IT!!!
You skimmed through the book and rate it one star??? WOW. that's all I have to say: wow. I'm not even going to say anything else. and people don't listen to all of those bad revievs out there. It really was a great book and is worth the money. (and so is his newer book)
and to the person who said: "This book TOTALLY rocked. I read it alot because it was so awesome"
YOU TOTTALY ROCK TOO! LOL!
One of the better books.......2007-02-03
Will this book make you rich? Probably not. But it will start you on the path to making money in the stock market. Like most who trade, you have to have learned from your mistakes in order to make money.
Velez makes the concepts simple and easy to understand. This book intoduces new traders to many technical concepts and puts them in simple terms. For an experienced trader you might learn a few things. As with all experienced traders, who have read many books, you're just looking for "one nugget"

The Art of Public Speaking .......2007-03-26
Excellent text book. The CD-Rom guide book gives you the extra help needed to excel in the course. The topic finder is also a great tool.
Best in Speech!.......2007-02-22
Thank you very much for the fast turn around on the second delivery. After I e-mail you guys to let you know that I had received my order incomple. Thank you again!
Excellent System-Too Partisan.......2007-01-24
I use this text to teach speech. It is a very good, systematic look at creating and delivering a speech. The system is great and the presentation is great.
However, you may be irritated like I am that the examples of mistakes are overwhelmingly made by males, who don't hold PC views, such as the business man who makes a big deal, the student who questions global warming theory, the student who doesn't want to attend the anti-war talk, the library volunteer who goes to church. While Lucas can't directly attack their positions, when he needs an example of a speech mistake, these are the people he chooses. It definitely detracts from an otherwise flawless book, especially when he is so preachy about respecting other viewpoints.
Excellent text.......2007-01-07
This is the textbook that our community college department uses to teach public speaking. I've taught from this text since the third edition, about 10 years. Lucas updates the book to keep the examples timely and the speech selections fresh. I've seen some reviews that talk about a political bias, either to the right or left. I don't detect that. In persuasive speaking, we want students to address controversial issues such as abortion, gun control, and health care, for example. Sometimes they argue to the left or sometimes to the right, but Lucas outlines the tools for good persuasive speaking. I like the emphasis on ethics. The logical fallacies (red herring, either-or, bandwagon, slippery slope, ad hominem) section is a valuable tool in critical thinking. The emphasis on internationalism, which most students will increasingly find relevant during their business careers, is excellent. The examples in the text do illustrate the main points, while the CD allows students to see clips of public speakers, bringing the craft alive. If Oprah, Larry King & Barbara Walters can earn over $50,000 per speaking engagement and Bill Clinton brings in over $250,000, it is a potentially valuable skill. For promotion and success in business, communication is essential. This is an excellent text for purposes of study. Enjoy!
Lots of Extras.......2007-01-05
Good overall text. Some repetition that helped. The CD abridgment was very help to review or preview from. But Topic Finder was helpful, ton of ideas to wrap your head around. Didn't touch the other extras.

Book Description
Lean production has been proven unbeatable in organizing production operations, yet the majority of attempts to implement lean end in disappointing results. The critical factor so often overlooked is that lean implementation requires day-to-day, hour-by-hour management practices and skills that leaders in conventional batch-and-queue environments are neither familiar nor comfortable with.
Creating a Lean Culture helps lean leaders succeed in their personal batch-to-lean transformation. It provides a practical guide to implementing the missing links needed to sustain a lean implementation. Mann provides critical guidance on developing and using the key elements of a lean management system, including: leader standard work, visual controls, daily accountability processes, maintaining a process focus, managing key HR issues, and much more. In addition, a questionnaire is included to help assess current management practices and monitor progress.
Highlights: Distinguishes the much-discussed, abstract concept of "lean culture" from the concrete, implementable practices of lean management. Describes and illustrates 4 key principles of lean management: leader standard work; visual controls; daily accountability process, and discipline. Shows how visual controls bring process focus to life, tie in lean's requirement for highly disciplined execution, and make leaders' new jobs far easier to explain, model and evaluate. Moves beyond models and theories of lean management to show how to implement the daily practices that are the key to implementing and sustaining a lean transformation. Book has quite an impact on new lean leaders.......2007-06-19
This is a fantastic book, one of the small number of "core" lean books that I recommend to people. I've used the book with many healthcare clients who are new to lean. They have loved the book so much that they have read it three times, learning something new each time, and learning something different at each stage of their lean learning journey. The most frequent comment I hear is that the book means one thing to them before they start but it means even more to them after they have "struggled" with a lean environment on their own, revisiting the book and its concepts helps immensely.
Mann's book helps make concrete the vague notion of a "lean culture" and spells out steps leaders can take to start moving in that direction. The book doesn't promise quick fixes, nor should it, but it puts you on the right path to developing your people, your leaders, and your problem solving skills. Kudos to David Mann for a very practical, actionable guide for lean leaders or those of us who strive to become lean leaders.
Clearly shows you why something so simple is so hard to do.......2007-04-11
I've been doing Lean since 2000 (Six Sigma earlier, 1997) and have been applying general Toyota methods with what I'd consider a very good amount of success. The problem has been, how do you convey the necessity of the Toyota Lean method as a complete "business system" as opposed to JIT and "tools" thinking for busy, batch-thinking individuals? This book fills the gaping void.
Pro:
-Straight forward principles, complete and thorough
-Appear to be true to the Toyota principles as I have seen demonstrated by ex-Toyota executives/leaders turned consultants
-Drives to the heart of lean as a business system, with many elements that I've personally tried or seen work well
-A Shingo Prize winner... impressive
-Avoids excessive Japanese terminology (not an issue for me, but sometimes an issue for others)
Con:
-I think that the power of IT applications is somewhat understated, and pitfalls of using or attempting to use IT-related systems not well described. Would like to see a better description of pitfalls and issues more specifically. Until then, think of IT as you would if you were automated a process... it had better be high volume and well understood
Bottom Line: I think this a must-have text, and it is excellently written and laid out... plus it's to the point reinforced with numerous short case study examples. I'd recommend pairing this book with "The Toyota Way" (read that first to pave the way for this book). Also consider "The Toyota Way Fieldbook" as the ideal 3rd text to study. A word of caution, these books require a whole new way of thinking and commitment.
New Lean Leader's Review.......2007-04-01
Good easy to follow book. Interesting sections of different leader's responsibilities and the amount of time they should spend on standard work relative to their position. Also, intersting ideas on how to collect and follow up on worker's improvement ideas.
Managing in a Lean Organisation.......2007-03-08
There are many books on the principles of lean, how to map value streams, 5S and so on. I am not aware of any other books devoted to how managers should behave in the lean environment. This book concentrates on the management "process" and recommends a number of key behaviours for lean leaders:
1) Leader standard work - i.e. standard tasks, notably walking the work area and reviewing performance on the "gemba", as a regular activity;
2) Visual controls - linking cell and value stream visual management with strategy;
3) Daily accountability meetings.
It is fairly straightforward to understand, and it is a short book (less than 200 pages) but it makes its points well and its clear focus highlights the importance of these simple activities and behaviours for managers to reinforce and sustain the lean philosophy. I particularly like the chapter on people and participation. The book could have an easier style but overall I recommend it for all managers moving towards lean. Without managers displaying the lean culture in their actions, the transformation will not hold.
Lean management.......2007-01-16
Required reading for those trying to change the management culture in a traditional manufacturing company.

Macroeconomics: Principles and Tools.......2004-11-19
This easy-to-read, well-structured textbook is an excellent source of information for any economics student. I used this book for Principles of Macroeconomics, an online course I took over the summer. The book is simple yet gives sufficient detail on many topics to not only provide a broad overview, but it is able to go quite in depth. The authors provide the student with a great deal of tools to use and supply many activities, questions and methods to help relate concepts to the real world. This book is written much better than my Advanced Macroeconomics text and is much more student-friendly.
Not perfect, but pretty good.......2001-05-01
The book is by no means perfect, but it's a darn good book. Its major imperfection is that many important concepts are spread around and not specifically brought to the forefront alone. Otherwise, though, it allows for a great foundation in Macroeconomics for your GECO 200 or equivalent class.
Macroeconomics: Principles & Tools Review.......2000-03-31
This book gives a great overview of the study of economics. I used it for an Introduction to Global Economics class in college and found it to be easy to read and understand. The information is extremely up-to-date, and is displayed not only through text, but by charts and graphs as well. There also additional materials (practice test questions, a CD rom, and a guide to researching economics on the internet) which accompany the text which are available as well. Overall, a great book for the study of basic economics!

QuickBooks 2007 The Official Guide.......2007-05-29
I am only doing the basic functions with Quickbooks including automatic downloads from my bank. I have not used this book at all and frankly have trouble finding what I need. I feel the small guide that comes with the software and the online tuorials and 30 day free 24/7 support is adequate.
A Disappointing Guide.......2007-05-23
Although I haven't gone very far with the Guide, it is generally a disappointment, at least for this Mac user of Quickbooks Pro. (It is possible that the Guide is intended for Windows users, but it was sold by Amazon as a package with Quickbooks Pro for the Mac. While this difference might explain problems with suggested keyboard shortcuts and depicted windows that aren't the same as those in the application, it does not excuse the shoddy index.)
The procedural sections (e.g., Do This First in the appendix) are passible. However even here, the instructions are often incorrect. For example, in Creating Accounts, the Guide instructs the user to press CNTL-A to open the accounts window, whereas the actual keyboard shortcut is Shift-Apple-A. Moreover, the two windows shown in the book to create an account are really just one (different) window in the application.
My major problem with the Guide is my inability to use it as a reference manual for answering specific questions. For example, finding specific pieces of information (e.g., how do I enter To Do Notes as Reminders?) is impossible. Even more frustrating, entries listed in the Index are incorrect. For example, if one looks up "Accrual-based accounting, About", one is directed to p.153; unfortunately, there is no reference to accrual-based accounting on page 153.
All-in-all, for those wanting more information on how to use Quickbooks Pro, I'd recommend using the Help feature in the application or the material on Intuit's web page.
Quickbooks 2007 for Dummies.......2007-03-10
This book really helped me get a grasp on the everyday tasks of quickbooks! Definitely would recommend for a first-timer!
Very useful guide.......2007-03-09
This has proven to be a very useful guide and a nice reference to have handy when dealing with QuickBooks. Easy to navigate and to understand.
Help guide.......2007-02-23
A little complicated for a beginner to QuickBooks, but helpful in many areas.

well organised and illustrated.Lacking in metric info........1998-06-21
I find this book clear and easy to read on machining topics. The photographs and illustrations fit well with the text. Generally a worthwhile beginners to intermediate book for pre apprentice to 3rd year. However in future editions I would like to see ISO metric information on topics such as threads and tapers along with limits and fits. I would also like to see a change to more up to date toolposts and tool holders for the lathes.

Customer Reviews:
Good for its purpose -- learning.......2007-05-28
The authors have put together a text that is long on examples. It might seem redundant to some, but I think this is the right way to teach a process discipline like accounting.
Much of the book is problem sets, in fact.
Let's see, the chapters begin with study objectives. Then there are highlighted "key points." Then at the end of each lesson, there are demonstration problems, self-study questions, questions, a set of brief exercises, exercises, then problem sets A and B.
I bought the 3rd edition, although the 4th is now available. The fourth edition has different problems in the first two chapters. In many instances, only the names of the company and an occasional number are different. It would matter if you are taking this for a class where the homework is graded. If your purpose is to learn the principles that underly financial accounting, though, you are as well served by the 3rd edition.
Great Book for Non-Finance Managers.......2007-02-24
This was a textbook used in my Managerial Finance class. It was easy to understand, aside from just a few concepts not explained as clearly as I would've liked. My background is engineering, however, I learned a great deal from this book. Great job Kimmel.
simple and easy understanding.......2007-01-05
the book provides examples and graphs to help demonstrate the text.
it has a lot of details and online reviews if u want to learn more and deeper
Terrible.......2006-12-21
This was a required text for my accounting class. Let's just say, if you're not familiar with accounting, or not fond of it, this text will make you hate it even more! Be careful because I somehow received the loose leaf edition of it and had to place it in my own binder...
Total Rip-off.......2006-08-25
The book is good, but $130 dollars!!!! You still need to buy a 3 ring binder to put the sheets in, it's not even a paperback, meaning the publisher didn't even spend the money for binding. Who owns this company, Shell? Exxon? Enron?!? There are other accounting books for a fraction of the cost, but the organized crime (my community college) requires this particular one. I wonder what their incentive might be???
