PM FASTrack is an exam simulation software program containing more than 1,400 questions and six testing modes, allowing you to create an unlimited number of different exams. Created with the help of a psychometrician (just like the actual exam) PM FASTrack is designed to simulate the exam and eliminate any surprises. The application also:

- Tracks your progress with printable reports and graphs
- Provides explanations of answers and page references to Rita's book
- Contains "wordy" questions like the exam
- Helps you gain confidence and fill your gaps
- Decreases your study time!

In addition, users with Internet connections receive FREE real-time database updates as they become available. Students say the questions in PM FASTrack are more difficult than the ones on the actual exam!

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Rather outdated........2007-06-18

I passed the exam by taking my friends advice of not continuing using this CD. The new PMP exam is more tough, the questions are more direct.Rita's questions are more easy but answers are very different with some irrational explanation and page # reference. The Mulcahy questions were regressive in the sense that over the period of time I started answering mulcahy way of answering which was wrong so instead of building my knowledge I was getting more confused as to what was wrong or right. At time I thought it may be a deliberate attempt to make you buy more mulcahy books or courses.

Many new topics from PMBOK are not covered even though I bought the cd in April 2007. My advice would be read PMBOK, then take some online free sample test.

3 out of 5 stars It's ok..........2007-06-02

This software was alright. I didn't pass my test using this software and the material presented by Rita. I am not sure if maybe she wasn't direct enough. She has many hidden agendas in the questions themselves that do make you think, but that overthinking didn't help on a test that was already nervewrecking.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful but..........2007-05-19

This exam prep software is awesome. I love the fact that it scores based on the # of questions answered, allowing you to take multiple short quizzes. I also love that it keeps a history of all test scores.

I'd highly recommend it, but with a couple of caveats:
(1) order it enough in advance to fully utilize it. I ordered mine less than 3 weeks before my scheduled test date and wish I'd had more time to spend with the tests.
(2) I had repeated problems with my software registration, which rendered my software useless. This always happened AFTER hours, of course, so I effectively lost 4 days of intense study time due to this issue. I don't recommend putting the software on a work-issued laptop. It worked fine on my home computer.

And, yes, I PASSED!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for getting used to exam timings and questions........2007-05-15

I used this product in order to given me an idea of what to expect when taking the PMP Exam. It allows you to get used to seeing the 4 hour time count down and to the idea of marking questions for review later so that you can move on to the next question without dwelling on it and wasting too much time. It also gives good explanations if you ever get any of the questions wrong but would like to understand why. All in all, a great way of getting ready to take the exam and getting into the right frame of mind. I passed my exam, so I recommend the product, particularly in conjunction with Rita's book.

4 out of 5 stars Expensive, but worth it.......2007-04-27

I found this software EXACTLY mimics the PMP exam experience. It's rather expensive, but I thought well worth the price. I really liked the way I was able to concentrate on my problem areas and the fact that each answer was explained in detail, both why the correct answer was right and why the others were wrong. (I passed the test the first time!)

I also liked that I could leagally install it on two different machines. I did have some initial problems installing, but customer support was prompt and accurate.

5 out of 5 stars Not For Beginners..........2007-06-12

This book is not really geared for the beginner; it is for those who have a decent/modest/working command of the English writing/language with a basic understanding of sentence structure but need tweaking here and there to help perfect their skill. It covers EVERYTHING from punctuation, tense and subject agreement, spelling, word use--everything that goes into writing. The book is very busy in that it is LOADED--it covers everything you need to write properly/correctly. The book's section-numbering-system might be a bit of a tickle, but give it a scratch and you'll be on your way. The numbering system helps you locate/move from one area of grammatical treatment to another quickly; it allows this full coverage monograph to be printed into a portable size book. There are no "filler text", no speeches, no stories, no editoralizing--just concise writings on proper writing. It also provides clear examples, valuable notations, and alternative sentence formations. You WILL get your $ worth! (I didn't have time to check the book for this review, so mistakes are mine. ;>)

5 out of 5 stars Great General Reference for Writers and Editors.......2007-05-09

I am a medical editor so my Bible is the AMA guide, but I needed a more general reference for my regular grammar/English queries. A co-editor who has been relying on and loving his Gregg Manual for years recommended it to me. His recommendation proved most helpful because so far, this book is great. I have yet to have a grammar question the Gregg Manual couldn't answer. It's great for editors and writers regardless of industry, and would be helpful for students as well.

1 out of 5 stars Adobe Photoshop CS2 Classroom in a Book.......2007-06-10

This book is the worst photoshop book I have ever used! In almost evey lesson he leaves out intructions. He acts like you did the lesson before. He does eveything the hard way. I hate this book and I would not give it a star. It takes forever to finish and I have to go to my NAPP help to do it the right way. I have not learned anything from this book. Don't buy it. Deb

Having been in the industry for several years, most IT books are dry, boring, sleep reading. The layout in this set is easy to read and comprehend. The examples are practical and useful. Only drawback to this series is the explanation of the pictorial network configuration errors.

Book Description

Thorough and up-to-date, this book supports any of the most popular approaches to AIS: focus on transaction cycles and controls; focus on systems life cycle; focus on databases and data modeling; or focus on computer-based controls, fraud and auditing. The book begins with an overview and conceptual foundations then goes on to discuss control and audit of accounting information systems, accounting information systems applications, and the systems development process. For CPAs and corporate accountants.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Yawning Hell.......2006-05-31

Is this the world's most boring book ? Technically competent but painfully dry. A gift too insomniacs. Good luck on getting past page 1 !

2 out of 5 stars Only Buy if Required for a Class.......2005-05-09

Very boring reading. Chapters tend to repeat themselves. The class I had for this book was one of the most boring classes I ever had. Instructor lectured from power point slides. I could have taken this class homestudy and done just fine, than to sit in class.

1 out of 5 stars Caution: Will Cause Drowsiness........2004-04-03

This book is simply horrible. It takes the stereotypical accountant and shoves him into the pages. It is so lethargic and monotonous that all the valuable information within the book just stops making sense. This book should be read by anyone who has doubts about becoming an accountant. They'll drop everything and go into premed. Horrible!

3 out of 5 stars Agreed. Boring as dirt........2003-05-10

Everything you need is in here, but the book truly is boring as dirt. If you need it for a class, fine. But do not buy it if you just want something to read.

2 out of 5 stars Comprehensive but boring.......1999-09-12

This is a very comprehensive textbook of the subject. It deals with just about every aspect of the AIS realm. It is, however, a very dull book. There isn't much illustrating, no color, and absolutely no life beyond the black and white wasteland of its pages.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not you first book of the topic.......2007-06-15

I really enjoy reading Martin Evenings books. This one is good as a reference book, but not as your first book about Adobe Lightroom. When you know the basics of Lightroom, this is a very good book when you want to learn the details. Evenings photographer background shows in a good way. He really shows how to put Lightroom to work.

2 out of 5 stars Not quite up to standard.......2007-06-09

This book is not up to the standard of his books on Photoshop.

I quite often found myself thinking that if I didn't already know this or that from my previous experience with Lightroom I wouldn't have understood it after reading about it in the book. Example: "As you adjust the Fill Light, the clipping indicator will again hint at the ideal range of settings to use."
Which clipping indicator: Highlights ot shadows? How will an indicator that is a simple Yes/No indicator (Yes there is clipping or No there is not) hint at a RANGE of settings?

To be frank: I found the free Adobe getting started guide to be more useful. It even contains some aspects not covered in the book.

I've now also bought Scott Kelby's book Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Book for Digital Photographers,The (Voices That Matter). So far that seems to be a better choice, I find the explanations more understandable and the book even includes some sample workflows.

4 out of 5 stars Thorough But Hard to Read.......2007-05-18

Martin Evening's books are very thorough, and this is no exception. He goes through each aspect of Adobe Lightroom in great detail, so much so, that it takes great concentration to stay with it for any length of time. Like many others, I ordered this book because it was one of the first one's out; I've now ordered Scott Kelby's book and it will be interesting to compare them.

Aside from the content of the book there is one aspect of it makes it very difficult for me to use. This is the fact that all of the screen shot illustrations are so excruciatingly small that I must use a magnifying glass to examine them carefully, even under a very adequate light. This is not a criticism of Mr. Evening, but of his publisher, Adobe Press. As a book designer, I can say that trying to use illustrations that are not completely legible is bad practice.

3 out of 5 stars The Adobe Lightroom Book.......2007-05-13

Nice layout but author assumes you know more about Lightroom than you probably do.
I would recommend Scott Kelby's book on Lightroom. He gives a no nonsense, step by step, process for learning the program.

5 out of 5 stars Effective and easy to use.......2007-05-13

I've bought it because it was the first one to be released, but in the end I'm very happy with my choice. The book is very effective; it gives you all the informatons you need to speed up your work with Lightroom. It has lots of examples and it is stuffed with tips and all the shortcuts. I'll buy another book as soon as a translation in my mother tongue is available, probably the Scott Kelby's one, but honestly I don't think there is that much more that could help me than what I already found in Martin Evening's book.

2 out of 5 stars no help.......2007-06-15

I have used Windows for several years. I bought a computer with Vista installed. I got Inside Out hoping to find new tips and tricks and didn't. The illustratins about changing colors are in B/W. The print in illustrations is too small.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Title for End-Users.......2007-06-05

If you're an administrator and are looking for a title to give you an edge on configuring, managing, deploying, etc. Vista, this title isn't for you; the Windows Vista(TM) Resource Kit is what you're looking for. This book is for average users new to Vista who want to familiarize themselves with the new OS and the bundled applications.

For the most part, the first 9 chapters cover the basics of Vista insofar as the user experience is concerned, concentrating on configuration, getting your plug and play hardware to work, understanding and using the embedded software, and using the provided support tools to help yourself and your friends. The coverage in this area is very complete, well written and easy to follow, with very little missing insofar as things "you should know". Although separated by a few chapters, chapters 15 thru 19 continue this coverage with information about the digital media (pictures, video, and music) tools included (Windows Media Player, Photo Gallery, Movie Maker, Media Center, and DVD Maker).

Chapters 10 thru 14 deal primarily with security and in-home networking. These sections include understanding what viruses, worms, and spyware are, reviewing the security tools and utilities in Vista that can protect you from these kinds of threats, and keeping your system updated. This is followed by an overview of local account management and parental controls, and finally setting up a peer to peer network and sharing resources. Again, all these sections are very well written and make it easy for those that might be uncomfortable with these areas to read and implement successfully.

The remaining chapters step up the technical level to include information on system maintenance, system tune-ups, troubleshooting tools, service management, as well as the registry. Many of these topics, if not properly explained, can cause the reader to have issues with their system when not properly implemented, but the authors have done a good job of explaining the what's and how's, as well as providing good recommendations on when to not do something.

If you're looking for a good end-user book to teach you the basics of Vista and then advance your skills on the OS, this is an excellent and inclusive read that won't leave you looking for additional materials later on.

3 out of 5 stars Windows Vista Inside Out Book only so-so.......2007-06-01

This book is not nearly so helpful as the previous books for Win XP. The author spends too much time explaining the cutsey additions to Windows (in Vista) and hasn't experience with the real problems folks have with the changes between XP and Vista. Such as the restore point where Vista decides how features should be used, but the imposed choice may not be what is needed.( like how do you find how to creat a restore point and how to find the point needed.

4 out of 5 stars Windows Vista Inside Out.......2007-05-27

Excellent book full of detail to come to terms with a new operating system. Vista has so many options available to customise it for your use, with some of the defaults not being helpful, eg setting a recover point, set off. Could be made better by use of colour in diagrams. A needed reference book because of the differences from XP.

4 out of 5 stars Vista...From The Inside Out..........2007-05-26

As with all new toys...manuals are a necessity unless you are the type that breaks them to learn how to fix them. The authors have used the Inside Out format successfully to make the transition to this new OS a more user friendly experience. I personally feel that it is well written, easy to understand and clarifies a lot of the mysteries that come with the new platform...overall a good read and an excellent resource book.

Book Description

You're not alone.

At any given moment, somewhere in the world someone struggles with the same software design problems you have. You know you don't want to reinvent the wheel (or worse, a flat tire), so you look to Design Patterns--the lessons learned by those who've faced the same problems. With Design Patterns, you get to take advantage of the best practices and experience of others, so that you can spend your time on...something else. Something more challenging. Something more complex. Something more fun.

You want to learn about the patterns that matter--why to use them, when to use them, how to use them (and when NOT to use them). But you don't just want to see how patterns look in a book, you want to know how they look "in the wild". In their native environment. In other words, in real world applications. You also want to learn how patterns are used in the Java API, and how to exploit Java's built-in pattern support in your own code.

You want to learn the real OO design principles and why everything your boss told you about inheritance might be wrong (and what to do instead). You want to learn how those principles will help the next time you're up a creek without a design pattern.

Most importantly, you want to learn the "secret language" of Design Patterns so that you can hold your own with your co-worker (and impress cocktail party guests) when he casually mentions his stunningly clever use of Command, Facade, Proxy, and Factory in between sips of a martini. You'll easily counter with your deep understanding of why Singleton isn't as simple as it sounds, how the Factory is so often misunderstood, or on the real relationship between Decorator, Facade and Adapter.

With Head First Design Patterns, you'll avoid the embarrassment of thinking Decorator is something from the "Trading Spaces" show. Best of all, in a way that won't put you to sleep! We think your time is too important (and too short) to spend it struggling with academic texts.

If you've read a Head First book, you know what to expect--a visually rich format designed for the way your brain works. Using the latest research in neurobiology, cognitive science, and learning theory, Head First Design Patterns will load patterns into your brain in a way that sticks. In a way that lets you put them to work immediately. In a way that makes you better at solving software design problems, and better at speaking the language of patterns with others on your team.

5 out of 5 stars Better book to start with.......2007-06-29

I tried to read Steven Metsker's book "Design Patterns in C#" before this one. But it was a difficult read because I was new to the subject. After reading "Head First", I was able to understand why Metsker's book is a well written and well organized book. If you are a C# programmer and have no experience in design patterns, you need both books.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2007-06-24

This book is an extremely clear and readable introduction to design patterns. It has serious contents and is not too goofy so that it becomes distracting.

While the sample code is in Java (and will help you gain more appreciation for the language) the concepts will apply to other languages equally well.

Definetly one of the best and most approachable books on this subject. Highly recommended if you want to learn about design patterns.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal.......2007-06-12

If you haven't read a pattern book before, this is the one to start with. It not only teaches patterns in an approachable manner, it also teaches sound object oriented design. It's so good I've bought one for every person on my team. Each time we hire a new developer we hand them a copy of Head First Design Patterns. Excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2007-06-12

I had never read a Head First book but everybody talks about them!
Having read the SCJP book by Katty Sierra and Bert Bates, I decided to try the Design Pattern book (authored by the Freeman couple, with help from Katty & Bert).

My impression... wow!
VERY clearly explained, lot of examples, lot of graphics! After 8 hours of work I find myself arriving at home and just reading chapter or two to relax! What amazes me is that for each chapter they present a requirement and create a first solution that is VERY similar to what we, in our fast spaced, timeline based IT world are used to do: something that will be done quickly and will solve the business needs... for now.
But then they show what can happen when CHANGES are requested to our initial solution (software developers KNOW what we are talking about here!) so that the reader truly apreciates how the initial quick-solution is totally un-scalable and lot of code rewriting must be dedicated over again to implement the changes.
A pattern is then introduced, showing how, by dedicating just a little bit of effort in the early stages of development, can save hours and hours of work in the future.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2007-06-09

If you plan on ever going into a programming/computer science related field, this book is a must. Great reference book, and easy to understand and retain information. This book will help a programmer transform into a software engineer. I never understood the full power of abstract / interface classes until reading this book (one of my college professors reccommended it for his software engineering 2 class). In my four years of college, the best book I purchased.... by far.

1 out of 5 stars What I hoped against, and worse.......2007-06-17

I borrowed this book expecting to disagree with much of what was said, but hoping it would be a productive disagreement: opening my eyes to some techniques and sharpening my judgment about when to use what.

The book provides an extended example that is so bad (by my judgment) that if I had been the presenter's boss, I would have told him "Screw up like this one more time and you're fired!" My reaction to the example presentation was either
(1) The presenter's primary motivation was to impress the audience with his brilliance by keeping an extended metaphor going, and he spent so much time on it that he forgot about content, or
(2) The presenter knew he didn't understand the problem and tried to hide it with flash.

Example: The slide entitled "The pharmaceuticals industry today is navigating a sea of change" has a graphic of a compass (or alternatively a steering wheel) as the body of the slide. What would have been useful would have been an enumeration (graphic or textual) of the (major) obstacles.

The excellent advice to not have your slides distract from your presentation is taken to an extreme and beyond. Bullets are very easy to misuse, but they do have important uses. For example:
(1) Use the "visual channel" to provide additional reinforcement to what you are emphasizing in your talk, and
(2) Remind the audience of the priorities and structure of the issue. This is a great tool when you have audience members who are inclined to go off on tangents or become obsessively focused on a minor detail.

I saw no value in the scheme of treating a presentation as a three-act play. I am not arguing against division into three phases - a basic pattern of presentations is (1) tell them what you are going to tell them, (2) tell them, and (3) tell them what you have told them. It was all the extra baggage of the template. I pulled one of my most highly refined presentations from the files and I could see that I might be able to force it into his detailed scheme. But I couldn't see how it would have helped me develop that or other similar presentations, and expect that it would have pushed me down counterproductive paths.

The subtitle of the book is "create presentations that inform, motivate and inspire." I do not do inspirational presentations, but I do see how these techniques could be helpful for such presentations. Similarly for motivational presentations that are primarily inspirational, rather than fact-based. I have seen a number of inspirational PowerPoint presentations and the graphics he uses here are so bland that they don't qualify as banal (Emotive does *not* require children, puppies, flags and belching factories).

It occurred to me that an interesting exercise would be to step through the DVD of Al Gore's PowerPoint presentation "An inconvenient truth" to see how well it fits the author's three-act structure for such presentations (Its Academy Award suggests that it should fit the traditional dramatic structure better than an arbitrarily chosen PPT).

I had a nagging feeling that the author strongly favors speeches and doesn't like PowerPoint, but has been told that he has to use it, so he has a system to minimize the role of PowerPoint in his presentations. I don't remember the author mentioning the use of a PowerPoint component to *augment* or complement what you are saying.

The writing in the book ranged from poor to adequate. There were extended sections where my reaction was that he was just droning on. Although his system for creating presentation is based upon classical rhetoric, there was little of those techniques visible in the book-as-presentation.

2 out of 5 stars Great for some, but NOT ALL SLIDES!.......2007-04-19

I'm a MS Certified Instructor, MOUS expert on MS Office 95, 97, 2000, 2003, and have been a PowerPoint trainer for 9 years.

The biggest issue learners have with using PowerPoint as a presentation tool is overcoming the compulsive need to design the slides to read as a speech. Once they are educated to understand that the slide show is a component of the overall presentation, and should be treated as an enhancement to the speaker's verbal message, they begin to design slides that summarize and convey impact to the major speaking points delivered to the audience.

Bullets serve a legimate purpose - they aid the audience in organizing the information being conveyed into logical, heirarchical format. This assists with both learning and information retention. It is true that improper use of bullet points(too much text per bullet, flat format [too many or exclusivly top level bullets], overuse of the bullet slide layout)creates a low-impact, boring presentation. However, it is equally true that the total eradication of bullet points can have the same result! Here's why:

The audience perceives the standard slide design within 7-10 slides. They then begin to anticipate the design of the next slide before it is displayed. Repetative slide design, whether it is bullets or graphics, causes this to happen faster. Once the audience can anticipate slide design, their attention moves from the actual content of the presentation to the visuals on the screen, and the presenter has to fight to convey the message.

The best way to design a visual presentation is to VARY THE SLIDE DESIGN. This will keep the audience interested in the MESSAGE itself, not in the visuals on display.

Remember that the overall intent of any presentation is to convey a message - not to dazzle the audience with visual sparkle. The presentation is an ENHANCEMENT so that the audience will retain information, and is should not DETRACT from the message.

The best tool I've ever seen for slide design is available in software form. Google "Design Sense for Presentations". This is not another "how to" PowerPoint tutorial - it is a Visual Design instructional course that talks about varying design layout according to a THEME - the theme is used for consistency, but the slide content is varied for visual impact and to maintain audience interest.

It does NOT ban bullet points, but shows how to use them tastefully, with variety and intrigue, so as to capture the interest of the audience.

Good Luck to all those who want to improve!

3 out of 5 stars Beyond Bullet Points.......2007-03-23

I had bought this book for a college course and that is the only reason. If not I would not have purchased it. It's okay if you have to do power point in this format. As a scientist, we would not have done it this. It is not always feasible to do so many slides for one presentation. I'm not sure if my audience want to see a photo on every slide. They are more interested in results and not pictures that are not pertinent.

1 out of 5 stars Simplistic and Inappropriate.......2007-03-14

I was hoping this book would provide insights into how to present complex information in a more comprehensible, useful format, using PowerPoint as the tool. Instead, the overall gist of this book is that presentations should be "dumbed down" as much as possible. The theme the author presents is that presentations should be story based. This is reasonable. However, the method the author recommends is that essentially *all* meaningful, complex (or, as the author prefers "boring") content be removed from the presentation. Presentations then become nothing more than catchy headlines and colorful graphics. All content should be in the presenter's notes (not typically to be provided). This is juvenile and useless and frankly reflects a complete lack of understanding of how presentations are made in a complex business environment.

5 out of 5 stars An Essential.......2007-01-04

I've created PowerPoints for executives in major corporations and national non-profits for years now, and this is one of the first books I suggest anyone who needs to create their own PowerPoint look to. Beyond Bullet points is accessable enough that the novice PowerPoint user can understand what's going on and use the lessons in his or her next presentation; it's also detailed and challenging enough that even an old salt like me can find things to learn and do. Don't be another person who stands on stage reading their PowerPoint, and don't let reading your slides distract the audience from your presentation; follow the suggestions in this book and wow your audience.

With most new products you have to start somewhere and for those that are familiar with SP2003 but have no idea with 2007 or are new to SPS2007 then this is a great starting point to learn the architecture behind it all a reference guide to assist when you not 100% sure on doing something as an administrator.

Great book for pre-sales and administrators. But too much information in this book does not give crispy answers to questions

3 out of 5 stars Sharepoint encyclopedia...........2007-05-05

It discusses everything you need to know with regard to MOSS 2007 but never really makes a point or stands out in any area. I read it and I feel like I am reading an infomercial about it and at times it lays out things you can do but it is not focused or useful in terms of diving into Sharepoint functionality or pointing out ways to actually get anything satisfying accomplished.

5 out of 5 stars if you use MOSS 2007, you need this book!.......2007-04-11

This is the "real" documentation for MS Office sharepoint server 2007. I believe they should have included a pdf version with each licensed version of the server.

2 out of 5 stars Contributing Authors Make it Worthwhile.......2007-04-11

When the "principle" author turns the writing reins over to others, the contents of this book becomes worthwhile. Unfortunately, that does not happen often enough. In reading this book I am reminded of the Calvin and Hobbes cartoon where Hobbes asks Calvin why he is not going to school. Calvin replies that he is just going to go on talk shows and hype himself.

Don't buy into the hype. If you do, you are going to feel very lonely with this Administrator's Companion. Scot Hillier's books, although they have a developer focus, offer a lot more than this book does for the administrator.
