There are also interventions uniquely suited to resolving problems ranging from low productivity to absenteeism to conflicts between individuals. 5 out of 5 stars Great Handbook for New Managers.......2007-04-03

I have been a sales manager for 10 years. In that time I have read close to 100 books on management and leadership. this is one of my favorites. It is an easy read, it makes solid points and it provides clear direction on what a manager needs to do to help get the most out of their people. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Best business book EVER.......2006-11-10

This is a must have for anyone in a supervisory or managerial role. Simple concepts, easy read...with actual dialogues to help you practice the coaching techniques discussed. And best of all, IT WORKS.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most useful management books yet.......2006-11-06

I wish I had found this book when I started managing people 20 years ago, it would have saved me a lot of painful trial and error. It is a remarkably practical guide that addresses the main problem that many managers face: how to confront performance issues in a way that will yeild a positive outcome, while not crushing or otherwise demotivating the employee. It includes examples of realistic conversations (including the extended silences that often happen, and the brush-off responses, the stalemates). It is also a book that can be constructively shared with your entire team - including those with performance issues - as it helps defuse all emotion and keeps the conversations on the actual and observable behaviors that are getting in the way of the business.

2 out of 5 stars Most Disappointing.......2006-08-24

Having worked in the mental health community for sometime, I was already familiar with this technique and have been using it already. I felt the book was really droll and somewhat condescending in tone. I wouldn't purchase it again. His companion book "Why Employees Don't Do What They're Supposed to Do and What to Do about It" is a more practical read and enjoyable too--I would recommend that one.

4 out of 5 stars Coaching for Improved Work Performance.......2005-10-19

Good, basic book on how to work with employees to uncover and address performance issues.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Play To Win.......2007-02-13

One of the best business books ever written. Awesome insights which should be read over & over by anyone desirous of running a successful business.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful for Self-Development.......2006-06-15

No matter your business - corporation, sole propietor, financial, education - or your role within that business - owner, manager, new hire - this book can help you grow within that role. Not only can it help you professionally, but also personally. As a corporate trainer, I recommend it in all my management classes as well as to those who come to me for career coaching. It's a great, quick and powerful read.

5 out of 5 stars Choosing growth over fear........2004-02-18

This great book by Larry Wilson is all about choosing growth over fear. It's about the miracle of personal development and no one knows more about personal development than Larry Wilson.Playing to Win is a soup to nuts approach to personal development as only Larry Wilson can do.Are you playing it a little bit too safe? What is that costing you? Read Playing to Win. It may revolutionize your whole life as it has mine. Outstanding book.

4 out of 5 stars Falls short in some aspects.......2003-04-07

The message of the book is very easy to understand. It boils down to not having fear or letting fear and emotions control our reactions. Always STOP, CHALLENGE and CHOOSE in the face of crisis. Stop to think. Challenge your moment's thoughts and reactions. Choose the optimal course of action. The definition of the author for winning is lovely indeed: to do the best that one can with all that one has.

Now, in terms of implementation, there is a lot of space devoted to the what, but barely one chapter devoted to the how to put the book's ideas in practice, although it's fair to say that there's a good number of examples and cases brought forward. The second to last chapter is dedicated to putting together a Statement of Purpose, followed by a Vision and a plan to set it all in motion, but I can't help remembering the level of detail that Stephen Covey goes into in his book "The 7 Habits..." when discussing this same topic, and this is one that he covers early on in his book, devoting the rest of it to ways to make it happen.

All in all, it feels like a useful Step 1 book, whose key message (STOP, CHALLENGE and CHOOSE) is helpful to have present at all times, but not a book that will help make a huge step in changing your life for the long term: it falls short in some aspects, which is why I recommend Stephen Covey's work more.

5 out of 5 stars Play to Win.......2002-02-23

Read this excellent book only if you dare to risk change. My life changed entirely when I began focussing on fulfillment rather than safety.

Book Description

There is one constant factor in the chaos of the markets and that constant is human psychology. In the Psychology of Finance readers are shown how the market's characteristics that arise can be interpreted and learnt from. This revised edition contains new examples and updates to charts. There is also a summary of the characteristics of each phase of the equity market, bear bottom, rise, bull peak, and decline. It includes an appendix covering the history of economic psychology
Written in an extremely readable and enjoyable style it shows how psychology can drive movements in the prices of financial assets, breakdown key market phenomena, eg, irrational attitude changes in the individual, and their indicators.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Make sure you get the first edition!.......2004-06-15

Tvede presents a good, intermediate-level overview of market trading from a trend-following perspective. He also describes several indicators which are useful in assessing the "temperature" of the trading environment. However, aside from the clarity of his writing and the logical development of his argument, he offers little which is new to the experienced market practitioner.

Also, please note that this book was published in two editions. The first edition successfully views the mechanics of trading through the emotional filters which affect our buy-sell decisions. The second edition is a complete rewrite which morphs the book into a nebulous psychology text that is only occasionally related to the trading process. You would be well-served to avoid this second edition! First edition - 4 stars; second edition - 1 star.

3 out of 5 stars Psychology textbook.......2003-01-06

The first part of this is an explaination of the various schools of psycology. Then he explains what ideas he draws from them. Though very interesting, you're shown possible explainations of market action, but not really shown how to understand which of those is working in the market at the moment. After all, isn't the study of psycology of trading supposed to give you an edge and help you figure out what people are doing or what they are "probably" about to do?

Later he goes into chart patterns and relates the material to chart formations. But nothing that is an improvement on similar discussions of the psycology of chart patterns we've all heard and read before.

As for one reviewer mentioning what is important in the markets, no where is M2 mentioned in the book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent! Can be a classic.......2002-09-15

If somebody reads one book, makes minor revision and prints it, that's plagiarism. If he/she reads ten, that's a scholarship. If the number goes to a hundred, it can be a classic, my appreciation of this book.

In the bookshelf there are numerous books telling either history of the investment market, or trading psychology, or technical analysis. This book is a rare breed that incorporates several dimensions into one. Chart reading, with elaboration of four basic market rules (1. market is ahead 2. market is irrational 3. environment is chaotic 4. charts are self fulfilling) interrelated with different schools of psychologyical theories (behaviourist, Gestalt, Cognitive, Psychoanalysis), forms the stem of this beautiful book with vivid "green leaves" of writings on momentum, sizing, turning points.....

One great thing of the book is that one does not need to know much about psychology to understand what the author tries to tell, because tables of examples are abundant to let you know when you had made specific mistakes. He does not teach you how to correct them, but it does lead the way of self improvement and really help to enlighten your trading style.

This book should be in any serious trader's bookshelf for fast recollection of some important trading principles, a regular dosage for cleansing mental dirt accumulated after his/her harsh trading life.

4 out of 5 stars Get to understand charts!.......2001-05-31

This book simply tells you why technical analysis is very much useful and accurate despite the efficient market hypothesis. Financial market afterall is a human-driven market and Lars Tvede has demonstrated concisely how charts reflect human behavior. A must-read for one who is interested in charts and investing long-term.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting book.......2001-02-15

The added value of this book is not trading psychology, but liquidity analysis, breath market analysis, sectorial rotation.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great resource to help explain diversity initiative.......1999-04-06

This book provides a great "big-picture" view of what a diversity initiative might involve. The authors address diversity with a perspective that a diversity initiative is more than an education program, and give explanation to some othe systems and processes that must be addressed in order to be successful at integrating diversity into an organization. A big positive is that the authros do not use the race/gender basis for diversity, but expand the definition to include many other characteristics that almost all people can realte to. I highly recommend the book.

2 out of 5 stars Trite, simplistic and not worth the money.......1998-12-12

Managing diversity is a subject that does not lend itself to simplistic, checklist solutions. Yet, that is exactly what the authors provide - a plethora of superficial recipes. Not particularly thoughtful and not at all practical for real-world use.

Real diversity management is far more complicated than this text would suggest!

5 out of 5 stars Required Reading for the Embattled Entrepreneur.......2002-09-16

Failure among the ambitious, upwardly mobile, educated and intelligent of our modern, industrialized society often comes across as being more devastating, more defining, and more frightening than it actually is. What in actuality defines us is not the number of our failures, but how we deal with our failure, how we look upon it, and most importantly, how we either use our failure or allow our failures to define us.

Hyatt and Gottlieb have written an excellent text on professional/career failure. The authors start the book by imparting intrepid examples both personal and private, of the emotional processes associated with failure. They accurately describe (often in painful and excruciating detail) the feelings of fear, isolation, shame and remorse associated with losing a job, status, money or some combination of the three. One can not only relate to the loss of purpose, the punctured egos, and the declining sense of self of those who have failed professionally, but also can actually feel as if it is happening to him or her- for it at some point has happened to him or her. They emphatically stress that career failure is something that eventually touches every professional, in some cases sooner, and in others, later. In this way, they show that failure has no prejudices, and everyone is a card-carrying member of this club, whether they realize it or not. As such, in dealing with failure, it is extremely important for the individual to realize that he or she is not alone in the experience, even if our greater society compels us to put up a strong front and pretend that nothing is really wrong. In order to healthily deal with failure, the authors emphasize the importance of understanding the meaning of failure in both the personal and the societal context, and elaborate upon how the feelings associated with failure unfold in the individual. Many people define themselves based on their occupation, their professional affiliation, or their status in life, and it comes as no surprise that these are the people hardest hit by career failure. Those of us who have cultivated other sides of our personality, such as those of us who live for our weekend hobbies, or those of us that are family or community oriented, tend to handle career failure much better, and can even take it in stride. Although many readers and those who have experienced failure or are currently experiencing failure may not believe it, failure actually gives people options, which the authors not only demonstrate, but also help the reader identify and ultimately take advantage of in later chapters.

In the first part of the book, one chapter each is devoted to defining the characteristics of failure at the level of the individual and the society, dealing with the feelings, which occur in stages, associated with failure, how our career failures can affect those closest to us, and how men and women respond to career failure. The second part of the book focuses on taking failure in stride, and offers a comprehensive strategy for personal reinvention after suffering a career failure. Arguably the most important part of the book, this section devotes one comprehensive chapter to each of the following topics: discovering why one has failed, gleaning from the failure some positive knowledge by re-interpreting the events leading up to the failure, recognizing and casting off old and inappropriate labels and finding new ones, expanding one's career choices, and making the transition from the old professional to the new, centered and focused individual. The authors also include in this section of the book a bonus chapter that showcases two successfully reinvented individuals, and elaborates upon the nature of their failure, how they dealt with failure, and the process of their reinvention. Each chapter in the second part of the book provides the reader with powerful tactics to build a new, improved person from career failure, and allows one to rise triumphantly out of the ashes of failure, much like the proverbial phoenix. The third and final part of the book, entitled `Towards Real Success', helps the reader to win the internal battle associated with failure. While the second part of the book helps to outwardly reinvent the individual for career success, the final section of the book helps the individual to cultivate a new perspective, a new outlook- on career failure. This part of the book encourages the reader to look upon failure as a learning experience, and as such, helps one to regard failure as a temporary setback that one can learn from.

The authors have written a truly empowering book, one that entrepreneurs and professionals must read and keep alongside all the other books on career and entrepreneurial success, as there inevitably will be one or more notable, spectacular and in some cases unfortunately public failures on the path to a successful career journey. In the end, I can only say that there is no shame in taking a risk, giving one's all, and failing, and I wholeheartedly believe that true shame results from failing to try, failing to risk, fearing change, and failing to grow. These, I truly believe, are the things that comprise the regrets in one's life.

5 out of 5 stars Moving onward and upward after a setback.......2002-02-14

I picked up this book after being let go from a F50 company late last year, and it has been a lifesaver as I've navigated unfamiliar territory. It lays out the stages most people experience when they've been fired, downsized, or eliminated -- shock, fear, anger & blame, shame, and despair. It addresses how failure changes the balance of power in a relationship, and how it affects men and women differently. It then moves to how we reinvent ourselves -- identifying the cause of failure, reinterpreting the event, relabeling yourself, and getting unstuck. There are numerous stories, including the authors' own, about failing and ultimately coming back better and stronger. One quote especially resonated with me: David Brown (he produced The Sting and Jaws, among other Hollywood blockbusters) was fired three times from top jobs. "Each time, [he] was stunned. And each time he never stopped to analyze what had caused him to be fired in the first place. Only after the third time did he begin to examine his working behavior. Why was he always running after corporate jobs...when in the end they held neither safety nor a degree of control over one's fate?" Whether you feel that corporate life is truly your calling, or you yearn for something different, this book can help you push past self-imposed limitations and re-invent your career in a unique and satisfying way.

5 out of 5 stars So, You Lost?.......2001-04-09

If you are having problems confronting a business defeat (whether you were fired, lost your business, or "failed" in your career), this is the book for you.

If your setback is affecting your health, your marriage, your friendships, there is hope.

If you have been moping around the house for a year or more, read this book.

If you've tried and tried to "move past" your personal problems, buy this book now.

If you have been searching for an answer, this is it.

Read this book.

    Book Description

Nicole is 2 years old, and her family, after months of worrying, has just learned she has mental retardation. In a fast-paced, engaging story, mother Sandra Kaufman frankly reveals the feelings of denial, guilt, frustration, and eventual acceptance that result in a determination to help her child live an independent life. This edition, revised on the 10th anniversary of the book's original publication, adds a "progress report" that updates readers on Nicole's adult years and reflects on the revolutionary changes in society's attitudes toward people with disabilities since Nicole's birth. Retarded Isn't Stupid, Mom! remains a celebration of all that a child can grow to be.

    5 out of 5 stars I gave this book to my mom . . . .......2005-10-30

and she said, "Yes, it is!"

We had a pretty great laugh thinking about our lives and everything in regards to this book. Great read!!!

    5 out of 5 stars offering hope.......2001-08-16

I found this book very encouraging. The book covers the emotional roller coaster of dealing with a mentally challenged child but also offers hope. I felt encouraged that my child might have a fulfilling life but discouraged by all the challenges that the future might bring. This book gives a look at the life and successes of a mentally retarded young women.

    4 out of 5 stars Hilarious, hilarious.......1998-12-22

One of the funniest books I've read in a while-- reading of Nicole's wacky exploits is sure to tickle your funny bone!

      Book Description

Positioning, a concept developed by the authors, has changed the way people advertise. The reason? It's the first concept to deal with the problems of communicating in an overcommunicated society. With this approach, a company creates a 'position' in the prospect's mind, one that reflects the company's own strengths and weaknesses as well as those of its competitors. Witty and fast-paced, this book spells out how to position a leader so that it gets into the mind and stays there, position a follower in a way that finds a 'hole' not occupied by the leader, and avoid the pitfalls of letting a second product ride on the coattails of an established one. Revised to reflect significant developments in the five years since its original publication, Positioning reveals the fascinating case histories and anecdotes behind the campaigns of many stunning successes and failures in the world of advertising.

5 out of 5 stars The importance of perception.......2007-05-13

If there's one thing that makes Positioning a classic and something that should be on the reading list of any marketer is the fact that it highlights what is the core of any marketing- perception is reality. It doesn't matter how good your product `really' is, or how hard you try, what matters is how your target perceives you vs competition. That basic truth, and how you could occupy the most desired position in the target's mind is the crux of this book. Perhaps some of the examples could get updated, but bottom line, this is the definitive book to read for any aspiring marketer.

      2 out of 5 stars outdated.......2007-03-30

Positioning makes a few basic points that are helpful for someone who is not familiar with marketing basics. However, the examples are so outdated that some now disprove the authors' arguments. The more detailed chapters make less sense in an electronic culture. This book is really only useful now for those broad, basic ideas in the first chapters.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-03-30

I first read this book back in 1991 when I was taking Advertising in college and it was excellent then. Now, that I head up AUDIN Web Design, I find it very informative as well as absolutely necessary to keep on my bookshelf. It is interesting to see all the things that they predicted back then come true to today. I suggest you read all (if not, most) of their books if you are interested in marketing. If you are in business, especially start-up, then this book is must have. Finally, this book is very informative, because it shows how to focus your business and not fall into pitfalls.

      5 out of 5 stars An Entrepeneur's Must Read.......2007-03-13

Buying this book is a no-brainer. If you are an entrepreneur (without a marketing background), as I am, this book will completely change how you position your company, craft your sales message, develop website content, and explain what you do.

If you are developing a new product or service it is often hard to communicate the value of your offering: you get so caught up in features that you have a hard time explaining the benefits. Customers could care less about features, the want to know "what will it do for me?" This book sets you down the right path.

Simply put, it is THE most important business book I have ever read. If I could only choose one more business book to read for the rest of my life, I would read this one again.

5 out of 5 stars Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind.......2007-01-13

Just as with the authors' other books, this is an excellent source of marketing information for the novice as well as the experienced business person.
