This is a practical and informative book.......2004-01-30
In my line of work I typically read eight to ten technical books each year. With my company's focus on wireless LAN security lately I had to become an 'expert' and read a bunch of books. This book is way superior to others on the topic. By words and numerous screen illustrations the author demonstrates that he has 'been there, done it' and shows how to do things that other books just gloss over. I especially thought the security checklist in the appendix was extremely valuable and by itself worth the price of this book.

Book Description
A MANAGER'S GUIDE TO WIRELESS TELECOMMUNICATIONS We all know about cellular phones, pagers, and cordless phones, but what exactly is "wireless" data, a "wireless" local area network (LAN) and "mobile" computing? Most managers have experience with some of these technologies, but if they want to make intelligent business decisions, they need to get up to speed on the "wireless" world. Marketers need this information to make shrewd decisions about developing new products and how to deliver those products. Other managers need to keep their in-house telecommunication system current. For either need, this book provides: ** a brief history of the emergence of wireless communications-and an outlook for near and long-term developments in this fascinating area ** an explanation of the key applications of wireless, including mobile communications satellite services ** highlights of U.S. telecommunications policies and their impact on wireless ** a guide to current FCC spectrum allocation issues ** a detailed glossary of terms, including industry acronyms. RON SCHNEIDERMAN (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ) is and expert on wireless technology and editor of Wireless Systems Design Magazine. Previously he was New York Bureau Chief of Electronics Magazine. He is the author of Future Talk.
Customer Reviews:
Good overview but it fell short of strategic implications.......1999-03-18
I liked the intention of the writer, which was to give an overview of the industry. However, the book lacked the following: information on real statistics, a global view, graphics and diagrams, and profile on suppliers, vendors, carriers, regulators and users(very little). Mr. Schneiderman found space to talk about the Oklahoma and NY's WTC bombing and not about more substantial information.

Book Description
Wireless Computing A Manager's Guide to Wireless Networking Ira Brodsky Pagers, cellular phones, and high-flying satellites have radically altered the modern work place and forever changed the way business gets done. But in his forward-looking new book Wireless Computing, industry expert Ira Brodsky convincingly documents the fact that the wireless revolution has actually just begun. Wireless Computing is a comprehensive guide to each of the elements of the new wireless universe. Chapters provide detailed analysis of topics such as:
- The wireless workplace and radio Local Area Networks (LANs)
- Cellular phones, including a complete discussion of the migration from analog to digital cellular technology
- Paging and personal messaging services
- Infrared: "Fiber optics without the fiber"
- Bandwidth, including a full tour of frequency ranges and how each is currently used
Beyond merely summarizing the latest wireless advancements, Brodsky suggests ways companies of various sizes and industries might integrate them into their internal communications networks. As the battle rages over which standards and technologies will win marketplace superiority, Wireless Computing offers provocative insights that corporate IT and communications managers, network administrators, equipment and software vendors, and others responsible for staying ahead of the communications technology curve are sure to find invaluable.

Good Overview of Wireless Communications.......1998-01-06
More than just a "manager's guide," this book gives a good overview of a wide variety of wireless technologies. If you're new to wireless, this would be a good introductory book. Also included are some descriptions of commercial wireless products.

The Bottom Line Perspective.......2002-01-08
In my job, I don't need to get the nitty-gritty details of wireless technologies, I need to write reports and make suggestions for how wireless will improve our bottom line. This is the first book that puts wireless and mobile technology into a business perspective in a way that helps me make recommendations to my company.
