5 out of 5 stars A Colleagues' Review of Dr. Carayannis' Book.......2001-02-03

Dr. Carayannis provides an in-depth exposition of the issues surrounding learning, strategic planning and organizational performance for technology-driven organizations. These issues are complex and not well understood in the literature. Nevertheless, Dr. Carayannis recommends that an alternative theory of the firm be developed to begin addressing the complexity of strategic planning in technology oriented firms. He provides the first step in this direction by juxtaposing various schools of decision-making, provides an overview of the various paradigms in decision-making, and details how culture, feedback, and learning facilitate decision-making. He then provides a plethora of empirical evidence from transport manufacturing, processing industries, and electric power generation facilities. At the end Dr. Carayannis integrates the theories with the empirical evidence into a very useful research framework. It is this framework that will allow future researchers to address a variety of hypotheses concerning the relationship among learning, strategic planning and organizational performance of technology-driven organizations. This provides an important contribution to the literature on the management of technological firms.

4 out of 5 stars A useful textbook on the strategic decision making.......2000-11-29

Elias Carayannis's book is essential reading for anyone interested in the theory of the firm and how the different approaches can be integrated. His discussion of triple-loop learning is particularly helpful. The book provides a comprehensive guide to the theory of the subject, and is supported by insightful examples from a number of different firms in the automotive, aerospace, defense, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and electric power generation industries in the US and Europe.

4 out of 5 stars Leveraging knowledge through technology.......2000-11-03

I read with the greatest interest the new book of Dr. Carayannis on the Strategic Management of Technological Learning. In the fast changing pace of the 21st century economy, this book is an essential reference for all practitioners who face the challenges of creating meaningful learning and knowledge sharing initiatives in modern dynamic businesses. Full of practical examples and tools from companies that are known for having a reputation for successfully leveraging knowledge through technology, this book helps you develop a strategic framework to gain a sustainable competitive advantage based on continuous learning -- a "must read" for those who intend to grow their firm's core competencies.

      Book Description

This book investigates how individual firms in developing countries undertake technological learning and capability building (TCB) efforts and explains why some developing country firms are world-class and others struggle with these important processes.

The study concludes that it is internal competencies, such as the ability to manage strategic change and develop coherent systems that enable firms in developing countries to effectively navigate technological frontiers, the network of global suppliers and weak national innovation systems. In particular, the ability to strike a strategic balance between developing a diverse range of internal learning routines and managing boundary assets over which they have only partial control is found to be of importance.

The conceptual framework developed for this study - the TCB system approach - draws on a number of intellectual traditions, including organizational development, strategic management, innovation studies, development studies and evolutionary theory of the firm. Conclusions are drawn using this approach to perform a detailed cross-sectional analysis of technological learning in a sample of 26 telecommunication operating companies in Uganda, Ghana, Tanzania and South Africa.

By focusing on firms in the services sector, rather than in manufacturing, the study covers an area that is under-researched and identifies many distinctive features of the capability building process. It is also able to offer insights on how the majority of firms in developing countries should cope with the challenges of speed and complexity of technological change even when they are not aiming to generate radical innovations at the frontier.

Technological Learning will be of great interest to a wide-ranging audience, including science and technology academics, scholars and policy makers in developing countries, telecommunications managers and executives, and organizational management scholars focusing on developing country issues.

4 out of 5 stars Sound coverage of basic.......2003-11-03

This is an overview of the issues in building business success, with a focus on human resource and knowledge management issues. It provides breadth rather than depth of coverage and is set out as a series of issues which require attention rather than providing an understanding of the processes needed to bring about systemic and continuing change.

The 16 chapters are arranged in three parts: Opening Hearts and Minds; Growing Competitive Advantage; Ensuring Lasting Success. Each chapter gives an overview of an issue area (e.g. recruitment and retention, managing intellectual property) and summarizes key actions needed to bring about success in that area. The presentation of each area is direct and straightforward, and illustrated with useful examples.

To use a cooking metaphor, it is nearer to a list of ingredients and how to prepare each, than a full recipe for organizational success. Selecting the ingredients and handling each well is necessary, but not sufficient to produce a delicious end-product. This is in contrast to Sydänmaanlakka: An Intelligent Organization, which takes the opposite approach of focusing strongly on the recipe, while treating the preparation of some of the ingredients rather more impressionistically.

                  Book Description

While theories on `learning organizations' and `knowledge-based companies' have recently emerged, little attention has yet been given either to the underlying structures of these developments, or to the link between these underlying structures and the resources available to manage them. Organizational Learning and Knowledge Technologies in a Dynamic Environment attempts to fill this gap. It thus presents practical and concrete ways for companies to be adaptable and flexible whilst operating effectively and efficiently. Underlying concepts and insights into flexible management and chaotic market behavior are translated into a pragmatic approach to knowledge management within companies, using the latest technology. Corporate knowledge is increasingly proving to be not only an important resource, but possibly unique in its sustainability. Managing knowledge as a resource, as well as managing learning as the process which creates that resource, can only be done using appropriate information technologies. The foundational concepts discussed emerge from such fields as neurobiology, cognitive sciences, physics, and organizational theory. These are applied to management and substantiated with examples. New developments in knowledge management, such as connectionist approaches, are outlined and illustrated with real cases. The author further describes an approach for developing knowledge networks in companies. The annex offers readers with an advanced interest in the matter an epistemological discussion on scientific methods for management research and touches in a broader sense on the measurability of management processes.
