    Book Description

The economic performance of African countries south of the Sahara generally has been poor during the past two decades. External factors such as high oil prices, deteriorating terms of trade, and wars, and formidable internal factors such as corruption, chauvinism, authoritarianism, and violence have continued to plague the region. Whereas in the 1980s the Subsahara was overwhelmed by drought, devaluation, and debt, the 1990s have brought the paradox of civil strife and a complex transition to democracy. This volume surveys the major political, economic, social, ecological, and gender related aspects of Subsaharan Africa's struggle toward democracy. Its essays pose two fundamental sets of ideas: that the internal equilibrium can be restored only through institutional changes with these countries; and that the political and economic dilemmas in the region are closely related to issues of gender and the environment. The volume will be of interest to scholars and students of comparative politics, developmental economics, and African studies.

      Book Description

The American economy and society are undergoing vast transformations, including a renaissance of capitalism, a great wave of technological change, and a restructuring of businesses and industries. A superindustrial society is evolving, and there is a new social cycle that initially offers a greater understanding of problems along with practical means to their solutions. This work addresses the changing state of America's economy and society in its global context, painting a serious but positive portrait of the United States in the next decade. In this context, Irving Leveson carefully explores long term trends and prospects, provides an integrated treatment of issues that are usually examined in discrete fragments, offers a context for planning and decision making, and contributes thorough analyses of specific trends and issues. The book is structured around three major themes. The first is the need for longer term perspectives in both personal and business affairs; the second focuses on key trends, and the way in which some will be significantly weakened, nullified, or reversed in the 1990s; and the third details the serious business, social, and economic challenges that remain to be dealt with. Leveson charts the transformation of America and the economic conservatism and market orientation that resulted in the renaissance of capitalism, as well as the long cycle upswing of economic restructuring. He then turns to the coming superindustrial society and new social cycle, along with the challenges, opportunities, and problems that the 1990s and the next century will bring. Throughout the work, he offers perspectives on such topics as prospects for corporate restructuring, financial globalization and volatility, health futures, and the relation of business strategy to long cycle evolution. An accompanying appendix provides comparisons of long cycles, and the study concludes with a selected bibliography. This work will be a useful tool for corporate managers and executives, government officials, and policy planners, as well as a valuable resource for courses in economic studies and public policy. It will also be an important addition to the collections of both public and academic libraries.

          Book Description

Europe is at a critical stage in its economic development. There seems to be a widespread desire to pursue coherent initiatives which address current issues but it is unclear which policies would fit the agenda.

Europe's Economic Challenge analyzes the wide ranging issues in economic strategy and considers future research possibilities. The book considers broad approaches to industrial strategy; looking at policy mix, institutional conditions for a more dynamic market and the processes of creating a democratic industrial structure. The authors focus on experiences in various countries, both in Europe and North America, in different sectors of the economy, and on the implications of European policies on Third World industrialization. The work includes a detailed discussion of the size of the public sector, innovation, R & D, entrepreneurship and inward investment. Europe's Economic Challenge poses some demanding questions and suggestions, discussion and analysis which provides a valuable contribution to the search for a successful way forward.

              Book Description

The 1990s were a decade of historical significance with numerous and remarkable changes. It was also a time of considerable reforms that strengthened the policy framework in a large number of countries. Yet the resulting growth experiences of developing countries have been extremely varied and often below expectations. What have we learned from this experience? And how can these lessons be applied to the challenges we face in the new millennium? This book brings together the insights and experiences of some of the world's leading policymakers and global thought leaders, individuals who have had substantial influence on the policy reforms and development strategies in their native countries. Sharing their unique perspectives, these "practitioners of development" explain the reasons for the uneven outcomes of the 1990s and, with the benefit of hindsight, draw relevant lessons for the future. Essays by leading global economists cover a wide range of topics, from the Washington Consensus as a policy prescription for development to the successes and failures of post-Communist transition countries. Those interested in economics, political science, and international studies will find much to think about in this challenging collection.

                  Book Description

As a privileged insight into operational thinking within governments and aid agencies, Cities in the 1990s addresses the key issues facing urban areas in developing countries. Based on an important workshop involving representatives and senior officers from a host of aid agencies and governments, it exposes to public scrutiny the approaches emerging in the wake of a sea-change in aid policy away from rural development and towards urban areas. In 1991, the World Bank and the United Nations separately published new policy agendas on urbanization in the 1990s. These argued a new case in the face of burgeoning urban growth in developing countries, where the cities and mega-cities accommodate not simply the majority of the population but also most of the poor. This predominance of the urban domain is acknowledged and reflected in the main thrust of the new agendas: that cities are the main means of transforming society as a whole in economic terms and of alleviating poverty in developing countries. Published in association with the Overseas Development Agency, the book includes summaries of these policy documents, two major papers by Kenneth Watts and Nigel Harris, and the main speeches discussions and summaries at the workshop, which was convened by the Development Planning Unit at University College London. The editor's introduction lays out the context of thought, policy and action within which the new agendas can be located. The book is far from being a work of "ivory-tower" scholarship: the discussions are about how governments should act, and how realistic and relevant the new policy directions are in operational terms. Cities in the 1990s is sure to be regarded as essential reading for anyone concerned with the staggering problems and challenges facing the developing countries today.

From the supplier: The 1990s have seen a significant change in the direction of economic policy and major accomplishments in many countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. Many of these changes have their roots in the debt crisis of the early 1980s since countries in Latin America and the Caribbean responded to this crisis by reducing external imbalances, slowing the growth of external debt and developing cooperative approaches with creditors to regularize their debt situation. Progress in the areas of inflation control and growth restoration was also made. In the late 1980s, most countries in the region opted to make long-term commitments to economic reform, setting the stage for sustainable, non-inflationary growth.
