5 out of 5 stars Finally, season 2.......2007-05-19

I think I speak for everyone when I say "it's about time". These Jim Henson box sets are always a bit pricey, but they are always top quality. I don't know about everyone else, but I'm much more likely to purchase TV series when all the seasons are released. So my message to the manufacturer: "hurry up and keep em coming" !

they just dont have entertainment like this on TV anymore

Kermit the Frog and film star Mia Farrow appear in this special, but the host is Wally, a Henson character who would rarely be seen again. (The special's Koozebanian Mating Ritual sketch was redone on a Season One show with guest Florence Henderson.)

Sarah (a teenage Jennifer Connelly) rehearses the role of a fairy-tale queen, performing for her stuffed animals. She is about to discover that the time has come to leave her childhood behind. In real life she has to baby-sit her brother and contend with parents who don't understand her at all. Her petulance leads her to call the goblins to take the baby away, but when they actually do, she realizes her responsibility to rescue him. Sarah negotiates the Labyrinth to reach the City of the Goblins and the castle of their king. The king is the only other human in the film and is played by a glam-rocking David Bowie, who performs five of his songs. The rest of the cast are puppets, a wonderful array of Jim Henson's imaginative masterpieces. Henson gives credit to children's author and illustrator Maurice Sendak, and the creatures in the movie will remind Sendak fans of his drawings. The castle of the king is a living M.C. Escher set that adults will enjoy. The film combines the highest standards of art, costume, and set decoration. Like executive producer George Lucas's other fantasies, Labyrinth mixes adventure with lessons about growing up. --Lloyd Chesley

5 out of 5 stars I love David Bowie.......2007-06-08

I cant help myself, David Bowie is my hero. And Jennifer Connelly shines in this movie as well

5 out of 5 stars A must for all Bowie and/or SciFi fans.......2007-06-08

Original version of the story, still a must see though

5 out of 5 stars classic fantasy movie.......2007-06-02

I'm always surprised to hear that this movie did poorly in the box office when first released. It's an imaginative and entertaining fantasy movie that doesn't need CGI dragons or epic battles to pull it off. Instead it has the kind of goofy creatures and battles that thrill and make one smile. David Bowie influenced a generation of young girls with his various pants in this film.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing more than an involved puppet show........2007-05-31

This film was designed for staging an elaborate puppet show. The acting of the two main human actors is wooden, and the plot is shallow at best. The film's interest is harmed because of the slow pace. Fine work by the late Jim Henson, but beyond that, it just doesn't hold the viewer's attention.

2 out of 5 stars wonderful imagination unfortunately no substitute for solid story.......2007-05-26

This is yet another movie from the 80s I remember seeing advertisements for as a child, but not being allowed to see at the time. (This is a children's movie, but rated PG which is a bit of a strange combination. We'll get to more of that below). For one reason or another I never bothered to catch up with it in the years since, but in college and beyond I met several people who were huge fans of this movie.

Although I know this movie has a large cult fan base among people of my generation, I think much of that is based on nostalgia. Which is hard for me, at the age of 29, to plug into. If I had seen this movie when I was 7, I'm sure it would have been a different story. And perhaps if I had seen this movie at 17, when I was just getting into classic rock and learning who David Bowie was, it might still have had a lot of appeal as a psychedelic rock film. But as it was, I'm afraid I found most of the film pretty stale and boring.

It's a pity because there's so much talent attached to this film: George Lucas, Jim Henson, Terry Jones of Monty Python as the screen writer, the drawing of MC Escher...(now that I'm no longer 17, I've decided I'm not a David Bowie fan, but you can't win them all).

And don't get me wrong, there are moments of genius in this film. A lot of the weird fantastic creatures are absolutely wonderful, and reminded me of why I liked the Muppet show so much as a child. And the general atmosphere of the film reminds me of "The Jim Henson Hour", (a short lived television that was on for a few months when I was in 5th grade) and so gets a couple nostalgia points from me there.

Unfortunately despite all the weird and wonderful Muppet creatures that populate this movie, the story is long, pointless and wandering. And, as usually happens with Muppet movies, the human actors really stink up the stage even though the puppets do a wonderful job.

The humor in this movie is really touch and go. Especially after all the recent children's movies by companies like Pixar which have sharp cutting humor that can also be enjoyed by adults, the humor in the Labyrinth doesn't hold up well by comparison. Typical example:
"If she kisses you,I'll make you a prince."
"You will?"
"Prince of the land of stink!"

A lot of the humor is also based purely on random strangeness, which is got to be the laziest kind of humor.

And yet, again, there are periodic moments of genius, where the old Monty Python influence seems to be coming through in Terry Jones. Like the scene where the Stone creatures are yelling out warnings of doom, and when they get told to shut up they become sensitive and reply that they are only doing their job.

The obvious comparison for a film like this is "Alice in Wonderland". Which was a children's film Disney released in 1951 and 20 years later, much to the Disney company's dismay, became known as a classic "Head" movie.

I think by the time "Labyrinth" came around, they were already anticipating that this film would be a hippy classic. Call me cynical, but I can't believe the people making this film never leaned over and said to each other something like, "Man, this is going to be such a good film to watch while high."

And this is the biggest problem with this movie. It doesn't have a clear idea of what it wants to be. Is this a children's movie with lovable puppets and messages about friendship? Is this a psychedelic rock musical with David Bowie? Is this just a weird trip? Mixing genres isn't a bad thing to do, but it's a dangerous thing to do if it's not pulled off right, and this movie doesn't pull it off right. Scenes from one part of the movie don't fit with scenes from another part.

And the Muppet urinating scene? What were they thinking?

The charm, the zaniness, the corny jokes, the showbiz cliches--every element of The Muppet Show holds up 30 years after Jim Henson's legendary variety series' debut season. Well, perhaps not everything: Today's younger viewers might have a hard time placing some of The Muppet Show's then-guest stars, such as Florence Henderson or Ruth Buzzi. But then, the Show's real celebrities are perennial icons Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Gonzo the... whatever, Fozzie Bear, Animal, and the rest of the Muppets' harried, well-meaning family of entertainers. Season One finds the show pretty much in the basic shape longtime fans will remember: A musical introduction followed by backstage chaos, another musical number, a sketch, a scene with the guest star, and so on. A half-hour episode can fly by pretty quickly, but it's interesting to note that the series hadn't quite found its familiar tone through much of the first year. A reliance on too many disposable verbal jokes and redundant, so-so material for sketch fodder ultimately gives way to more creative premises and the development of key relationships between characters. By the final half-dozen episodes in the first season, The Muppet Show is truly cooking. Season highlights include Kermit's confession to guest Juliet Prowse that he always wanted to be a dancer, and Prowse's comparison of the little green superstar to Robert Redford. Joel Grey does a cabaret-style act for a roomful of Muppets and is later outraged when Kermit's introduction of the actor proves so thorough there is nothing left for the latter to say. Rita Moreno proves quite game in a funny piece, set in a French cafe, in which her dance with a man-size Muppet turns from romantic to table-smashing violent. Harvey Korman plays bumbling ringmaster Maurice the Magnificent, easily the worst animal trainer in history. Phyllis Diller bats out shameless one-liners ("I sang 'Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star,' and it fell on me"), and Vincent Price toys with his own horror film image by playing a ghoul who turns into a maudlin orchestra conductor at midnight. --Tom Keogh

1 out of 5 stars Lots of hitting, exploding, meanness.......2007-06-16

I recently purchased this dvd set thinking it would be wholesome entertainment. Although there are some innocently funny jokes, there is a lot of hitting, bigger monsters eating and hurting smaller monsters, exploding heads and the like. I suppose some people find this funny, I don't. So, beware if you are trying to avoid violent programming. There is a substantial amount of violence throughout these shows.

5 out of 5 stars I Love It!!!.......2007-06-12

I have been a fan of the Muppets since I was a little girl! I remember the first time I saw the little creatures I thought they were real, but when I found out the were puppets and that people brought them to life they somehow became even more magical. The artistry that the performers posess is amazing and the fact that when you watch these episodes you forget they have people under them is proof that magic can happen!
I absolutely LOVE the Muppets and it was a very sad day when Jim Henson passed away. Thought the magic is still there, it's different and with these DVD's you can see the Henson magic all over again and relive the Joy he had in creating this world!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful! I want more!!!.......2007-05-18

When we saw that The Muppet Show was FINALLY for purchase on DVD we snapped it up immediately. We are still watching them over and over again. WHERE ARE THE OTHER SEASONS???????

5 out of 5 stars It's Time To Raise the Curtain!.......2007-05-16

I grew up watching shows that Jim Henson had created or helped create: SESAME STREET, FRAGGLE ROCK, THE STORYTELLER, and of course THE MUPPET SHOW. I loved THE MUPPET SHOW as a child. Years later my appreciation and fascination with the show has only increased. The first season of the show might not have been the best of the series, some of the jokes aren't as funny and some of the best re-occurring sketches did not even appear. For the most part, most of the performers were just beginning to become acquainted with their characters and in some places the unfamiliarity shows. Some characters do not yet exist in Season One, for instance Dr. Honeydew's assistant Beaker (he arrives in Season Two) or the chickens that Gonzo adores so much. Other characters appear in Season One, but are rarely seen again or sometimes disappear, e.g. George the Janitor or Wayne's performance partner Wanda. None of this takes away from how delightful it is to watch the first season of THE MUPPET SHOW in its entirety. Watching (and often re-watching) these shows is like traveling back through time and watching some monumental event once again on television, such as the Berlin Wall crumbling. After watching an episode or two, I was giddy for the rest of the day.

The episodes are ordered according to their production number and not they way they were filmed or aired (different episodes aired at different times in the U.S. and the U.K.). The list of guest stars for the season is listed below.

Episode 1--Juliet Prowse
Episode 2--Connie Stevens
Episode 3--Joel Grey
Episode 4--Ruth Buzzi
Episode 5--Rita Moreno
Episode 6--Jim Nabors
Episode 7--Florence Henderson
Episode 8--Paul Williams
Episode 9--Charles Aznavour
Episode 10--Harvey Korman
Episode 11--Lena Horne
Episode 12--Peter Ustinov
Episode 13--Bruce Forsyth
Episode 14--Sandy Duncan
Episode 15--Candice Bergen
Episode 16--Avery Schreiber
Episode 17--Ben Vereen
Episode 18--Phyllis Diller
Episode 19--Vincent Price
Episode 20--Valerie Harper
Episode 21--Twiggy
Episode 22--Ethel Merman
Episode 23--Kaye Ballard
Episode 24--Mummenschanz

My favorite episodes from this season include the ones with Rita Moreno, Jim Nabors, Florence Henderson, Peter Ustinov, Sandy Duncan, and Vincent Price. The last episode in the series has the Swedish theatrical-mime troupe, Mummenschanz as the guests. Mummenschanz was probably the most unusual guests to ever host THE MUPPET SHOW. When I was younger and saw this episode it actually frightened me a bit, with all the strange masks and such, but now watching it again, even though it isn't one of my favorites, I really enjoyed the performances.

Each episode is pretty much shown in its entirety, except for six of the shows which had songs which can no longer be shown because of copyright issues. In addition, every episode includes a segment from the U.K. that did not air when the shows were scene in the U.S. Watching it on DVD is the first time Americans are able to see these U.K. spots.

The DVD set includes an option called "Muppet Morsels" that can be played with each episode. This morsels are kind of like the bubbles from VH1's Pop-Up Video, but aren't nearly as annoying. Some of the information the morsels provide becomes redundant such as telling when each episode was filmed and when it first aired in New York City. Also, after watching enough episodes it becomes apparent that Disney is now in control of The Muppets because there are always little plugs for Disney films, shows, etc. For instance, in providing information about a guest host a morsel might mention the productions the host is most well known for and then the next morsel says something like, "so-and-so also starred in (Disney film), (Disney film), and (show now owned by Disney)." These plugs are subtle and not obvious, but they are there.

Also included as a special feature is the original Muppet pitch reel that Jim Henson used to pitch the show to the executives at CBS. Almost the entire pitch reel is available, but there is a very short afterwards from Kermit that has been cut because he asked "What the h**l was that?". Nevertheless, even with the Kermit footage missing, it is a joy to be able to own this piece of marketing because it illustrates not only how creative Jim Henson was, but also that he was a savvy businessman. Season One also includes the second Muppet Show pilot, "Sex and Violence". There was a previous pilot, "The Valentine Show" that is supposedly going to be an extra feature on THE MUPPET SHOW: SEASON TWO. Finally, the last of the special features is a promo gag reel, which really isn't a gag reel at all but is a series of promo spots highlighting upcoming episodes from season one.

THE MUPPET SHOW is a classic piece of American television. It's a great item to own and watch together with families, but if you're a Muppet fan, it's a must-have item.

5 out of 5 stars So Fantastic!.......2007-05-12

We just sat down as a family and watched The Muppet Show with our three kids. They LOVED IT. My husband and I grew up with the Muppets. It's so nice to share something fun and entertaining with the kids that we enjoyed at their age. If you're a child of the 1970's this is one to add to the kid collection!

Saturday Night Live: The Complete First Season boxed set is much more than the sum of its parts, in fact it's one of the most significant TV DVD releases yet. This isn't just an 8-disc set featuring 24 episodes of live sketch comedy, it's a big box of zeitgeist. This really is the complete first season, mostly uncut and complete with every musical act and short film intact (a few bumpers and transitions were removed to make it flow better on DVD). The first broadcast aired on October 11, 1975, hosted by George Carlin and featured musical guests Billy Preston and Janis Ian. At first, things seem a little raw: Carlin's opening monologue is painfully unfunny, Chase's first shot at the seminal "Weekend Update" is amusing but sloppy, and much of the cast seem to be holding back. But the groundwork is all there, and soon in subsequent episodes you can see it all start to come together (especially with John Belushi who lets his simmering intensity out to tremendous effect), proving that the first episode simply belies the historic impact the show would come to have on popular culture. Here you'll find the first airing of some of the many skits that stayed famous over the years: the Land Shark, Samurai Hotel, Chevy Chase's opening pratfalls and the impersonations of Gerald Ford which would spin off into the proud SNL tradition of presidential parodies.

The set is a very entertaining look at a significant point in TV and American cultural history. It is so 1975, but that's a major part of its appeal: did Chevy Chase really used to look that young? Did a young George Carlin really used to look so old? Check out Abba in those disco jumpsuits. And if you're a fan of The Muppets, seeing them here on late-night TV making jokes about getting drunk will blow your mind. Younger fans may not fully understand just how groundbreaking this show was at the time. For example, Richard Pryor hosting the seventh episode, which includes the famous "Word Association" sketch. Back then, to have a comedian of Pryor's reputation joking about drugs, sex, and race on live TV was a tremendous risk (it's also gratifying to see the obvious effect he had on the next generation of comics like Eddie Murphy and Chris Rock), and it helped established the show's cache as unpredictable and edgy. The DVD set is full of moments like this and, like the show itself, it has its ups and downs. Watching hosts like Rob Reiner (back when he was still in his "Meathead" days from All in the Family), Madeleine Kahn, and Desi Arnaz work their comedy chops with the cast are high points. Whereas the infamous Louise Lasser episode, which is known for being among the worst episodes in the show's history… not so much. Still, it's entirely to Executive Producer Lorne Michaels's credit that it's included here. It's a tremendous collection of everything that gave birth to Saturday Night Live, and the seed of what SNL would become, spawning many movies (not to mention a few catch-phrases), launching the careers of many great comedians, and providing TV viewers with some of the most famous, and infamous, moments in broadcast history. And it all started right here.

The set is packaged in a well-designed, sleek fold-out digi-pack with every episode listed on the sleeves, with hosts, musical guests, and the original air date. The special features include a rare look at the cast members' original screen tests, and a 1975 TV interview with the cast. --Daniel Vancini

Description

Nicknamed the "Not Ready for Prime Time Players," the original cast of Saturday Night Live ignited a comedy revolution with their mix of irreverent characters and satirical impressions of political figures and pop culture icons. From the premiere of this groundbreaking sketch comedy show on October 11, 1975, live from historic Studio 8H in New York City's Rockefeller Center, Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Jane Curtin, Chevy Chase, Garrett Morris, Laraine Newman, and Gilda Radner launched themselves into instant stardom and were often referred to as "The Beatles of Comedy." Created by Lorne Michaels over three decades ago, Saturday Night Live has had the cultural impact and relevance that few shows can claim. Nowhere else can you see the complete first season of SNL, featuring hosts George Carlin, Rob Reiner, Lily Tomlin, Richard Pryor, Elliott Gould, Candice Bergen, or original musical performances by Simon & Garfunkel, ABBA, Patti Smith, Jimmy Cliff, and Carly Simon. And if you're curious as to how the original cast was hired, check out the DVD bonus features, which include the screen tests of each performer.

3 out of 5 stars How About A Best Of SNL By Year?.......2007-06-23

How about making 'Best Of' Saturday Night Live by year? Not by host, not by former player, not by something with interviews and commentary, just best skits only and by year. Best of 1978, Best Of 1986, Best Of 1994, etc...

4 out of 5 stars great!!.......2007-06-06

Not sure how the current generation will get this, but I like it. Some funny stuff, some not so funny stuff. But what you have to remember is this was the first season, and this show was supposed to be over the top. Pretty tame by todays standards.

Oh and this DVD proves why John Belushi is comedic genius and Chevy Chase.....well not so much. Chevy Chase got ALL the press during the first season of the show, and I think Belushi hated him for it. Because John knew he was funnier than Chevy. Weekend update was funnier in later seasons with Belushi and Jane Curtain, Dan Akyroyd. And I didn't get it than and STILL don't get why ppl thought Chevy's "Gerald Ford" skits were funny. Not to say Chevy Chase isn't funny. In movies, just not here. I think just about anyone who enjoy's sketch comedy will enjoy this. I also going to get it for my dad on Father's Day. Enjoy!!!

4 out of 5 stars Good but I want all of the other years as well..........2007-06-05

It's a bit rough as the show didn't really have it down until year 2, but who wouldn't die laughing at the slumber party skit. Yes it's now been done a zillion times, but watching it with my teenagers was a hoot. You should have seen their faces realizing that their parents watched this when they were teenagers.

Just have the remote handy and skip over the stuff that isn't so good. There is plenty here to keep you laughing.

4 out of 5 stars A slight mixed blessing..........2007-06-01

Now don't get me wrong: when I first heard of this set's release, I was ecstatic. I bought it within days of its release. However, despite what people always say about him, I find Chevy Chase to be so unfunny it hurts. I struggled to laugh at his "impersonations" of Gerald Ford. Let's face it: any idiot can simply state, "I'm Gerald Ford", and then do stupid things for an audience of any size, be it for drinking buddies or a live TV audience of millions. Stumbling around like a deranged idiot and tumbling over objects is not what I call "funny". It will be a very long wait to see Dana Carvey do George H.W. Bush, but I trust it will be worth it.

As for Weekend Update, I've always hated it. Then again, maybe it's because I've mostly seen the WU segments from the Chase, Rocket and Macdonald eras (in descending order of awfulness). I don't have to worry about the last two anchors for another five/nineteen seasons respectively, so I shouldn't knock it. I managed to laugh approximately three times over the course of 24 editions (not counting the rest of the episodes), and they were slight chuckles, too. Not screaming laughter like I could expect from the mid-80's to early 90's era. But I will buy every season as it is released, even the awful ones (six, twenty, everything after and including twenty-eight), for various reasons, some of which are listed below:

- Nostalgia factor.
- Good comedy in some cases.
- "I'll believe it when I see it" syndrome.
- The Dark Side with Nat X.

Now, onto the set: it is a very-well done set. The absence of the commercial bumpers I can forgive (they weren't a really big deal anyway), as well as the mediocre (at times) picture and audio quality. This was a live show broadcast in the mid-70's, so I can forgive some aspects, such as the ghosty picture on the first episode and the tinny audio on the Christmas episode. I find it remarkable that all of the music is intact, and I look forward to some musical acts while cringing in disgust at others. Of course, I've always been convinced that the talent coordinators for the show have been insane (anyone who can put Roseanne and Green Day in the same episode [Season 20] is clearly out of it), but that's beside the point. The fact is that they're all there, and hopefully will continue to be included over the next 30+ seasons.

While it is difficult to find some decent funny in this collection, it is a well-done set, and should be bought with the promise that the show will improve over time. Recommended for all, although you might need to pry your eyes open with a crowbar for some episodes.

5 out of 5 stars Need more like this.......2007-05-22

The best of SNL since it is complete, and not just the 'best of this or that..but the entire season, need more 'entire seasons'.

Amazon.com essential video

This simply irresistible first feature from the Muppets has Kermit the frog going from the swamps to Hollywood to be a star. As he travels and picks up his usual friends (Miss Piggy, Fozzie the Bear), Doc Hopper (Charles Durning) is in pursuit, looking for Kermit to be the spokesman for his frog-leg cuisine. A loose rendition of The Wizard of Oz, the film incorporates the same cagey humor as their breakout syndicated TV series The Muppet Show. This is one of the few times that a human cast (notably Steve Martin, Orson Welles, and Carol Kane) are integrated seamlessly with nonhumans. Worth noting is Paul Williams's score, which includes the Oscar-nominated "The Rainbow Connection." Williams's music, much like Howard Ashman's work on The Little Mermaid and other Disney films, provides more than atmosphere; there's a degree of magic here. Williams did not work on the future Muppet films until A Muppet Christmas Carol. His contributions made these films the best of the Muppet series. --Doug Thomas

Jim Henson vaulted Kermit, the famous floppy-armed frog, and his Muppet pals to the big screen with this charming 1979 musical adventure. Like the TV show that inspired it, Henson and director James Frawley playfully acknowledge movie clichés and conventions and allow the characters to address the camera in asides, like a Hope and Crosby road film for the 1980s. The ambitious singing frog decides to leave his swamp and conquer Hollywood, gathering a group of friends along the way (Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, and more) and bumping into oodles of guest stars making tongue-in-cheek cameos (my favorite is the tip-of-the-hat appearance by Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy). Meanwhile, despicable fast-food king Charles Durning pursues Kermit, hoping to make him the spokesfrog for his Frogs-Legs restaurant franchise. Austin Pendleton costars as Durning's sad sack henchman while guest stars include James Coburn, Dom DeLuise, Madeleine Kahn, Steve Martin, Milton Berle, Bob Hope, Carol Kane, Cloris Leachman, Mel Brooks, Richard Pryor, Telly Savalas, Elliot Gould, Orson Welles, and Big Bird. Paul Williams penned the bouncy, song-filled score. You'll believe a frog can sing! --Sean Axmaker

4 out of 5 stars Brings back fond memories.......2007-02-12

Ah, something my children and I can watch together and not drive me insane.

This is the original muppet movie from 1979. I remember seeing it in the theater as a child. My kids like the singing, but get bored with the dialouge. But they are young (18 mo. & 32 mo.), so I am not suprised. I enjoy seeing all the big stars and comedians who took bit parts in this movie.

The only thing I don't like...most kids films with music/singing will have a bonus feature of the music scenes. It's a nice way to see the kids' favorite parts and only takes a few minutes if they want "just one more" show, song, story, etc. This DVD doesn't contain a music scene bonus feature.

Definately worth the money if you are a child from the 70s raising children today.

5 out of 5 stars First entire family enjoyable film........2006-07-17

The film which came out before I was even born! Is one that I enjoyed when I was growing up and also love to watch as an adult and will definitely share with my children one day! One day we'll find it, the rainbow connection that makes this film great for people of any age.

4 out of 5 stars DVD NOT "censored", but "The Muppets Go Hollywood" SHOULD'VE BEEN INCLUDED!.......2006-07-16

Let's clear up some confusion here....the "grasshopper" comment was on the movie soundtrack ONLY. It was NOT in the film. If you listen to the song "I hope that something better comes along" from the soundtrack recording, MOST of the dialog exchange between Rowlf and Kermit prior to the beginning of the song, is DIFFERENT than the movie (not just the "grasshopper" line). The different dialog on the soundtrack was to help make sense of the scene in which the song takes place, for those who hadn't seen the film.
I have an old VHS tape of The Muppet Movie from 1984, and the "grasshopper" line isn't on that either. Nothing was censored for the DVD.

I agree that the Muppets' 1979 TV special "The Muppets Go Hollywood" (which promoted the film's release), SHOULD have been included on this DVD. I'm deducting one star for that ridiculous omission.

5 out of 5 stars Best movie ever.......2006-04-24

This is only best movie ever made. I like all the Jim Hensons I've ever seen but those are nothing compared to this. I like the fact that Big Bird and Steve Martin were in this. It was funny, had oscar-winning rainbow connection and travels across the USA
A lot of people think Disney DVDs have few bonus features aren't very good ones. The only ones on here are Backstage Disney (which i dont watch) and pepe profiles. Pepe is so cool and I learned little known facts aboit kermit.

4 out of 5 stars Review of so-so 50th anniversary DVD of great movie.......2006-04-16

I would have given 3 and 1/2 stars if I could.

I have to agree with the reviewers disappointed with the DVD. The Muppet Movie is such a wonderful movie. Funny, smart, literate, warm...every reason to give it great packaging.

This new edition, unfortunately not only doesn't contain significant new material (Kermit featurette unsatisfying), it robs us of stuff on the previous release!

In the early DVD release, we got James Frawley's test footage. Also, we could choose to run the movie in French with captions in French. Although the words didn't match exactly, it was a great way to boost learning the language, particularly conversational French. In this edition, we have the spoken language only. I recognize that not a lot of people will be disappointed by this, but maybe some will.

The lost material is not enough to keep me from buying The Muppet Movie, but it is enough to make me scan e-bay for the earlier, superior edition.

Jim Henson's fantasy epic The Dark Crystal doesn't take place a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, but like Star Wars it takes the audience to a place that exists only in the imagination and, for an hour and a half, on the screen. Recalling the worlds of J.R.R. Tolkien, Henson tells the story of a race of grotesque birdlike lizards called the Skeksis, gnomish dragons who rule their fantastic planet with an iron claw. A prophecy tells of a Gelfling (a small elfin being) who will topple their empire, so in their reign of terror they have exterminated the race, or so they think. The orphan Jen, raised in solitude by a race of peace-loving wizards called the Mystics, embarks on a quest to find the missing shard of the Dark Crystal (which gives the Skeksis their power) and restore the balance of the universe. Henson and codirector Frank Oz have pushed puppetry into a new direction: traditional puppets, marionettes, giant bodysuits, and mechanical constructions are mixed seamlessly in a fantasy world of towering castles, simple huts, dank caves, a giant clockwork observatory, and a magnificent landscape that seem to have leaped off the pages of a storybook. Muppet fans will recognize many of the voice actors--a few characters sound awfully close to familiar comic creations--but otherwise it's a completely alien world made familiar by a mythic quest that resonates through stories over the ages. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars The Dark Crystal.......2007-06-15

There are 10 Skekses left in the world. This cruel, violent species's emporer is dying. There are 10 Mystics left in the world. The wisest Mysitc is dying. When the Mystic leader (the dying one) was younger he rescued a Gelfling from a Skekses raid (there were more of each species back then) and dubbed him Jem. The Mystics taught him everything - except the prophecy (IF YOU TRY TO STOP A PROPHECY IN A MOVIE YOU WILL FAIL, PERIOD.) The prophecy said that if a Gelfling does not repair the Crystal, located in the Crystal Castle, before the 3 suns lined up the world will be plunged into a time of evil forever. Skekses send bug-monsters to catch and kill Jem. Jem goes to the ugly witch Olgra to get the shard which came off. As he turns to leave, the bug-monster things attack Olgra's dome-house. Then they carry off Olgra, but she turns out not to be a Gelfling, let alone Jem. Jem is running for dear life. Then this puffball dog thing growls at him. A girl Gelfling comes out and says something to the puffball, who shuts up. It turns out that the Pod People had saved HER from the SAME raid. Love love lovie dovie. Jem goes to the Pod People with Kira, but then the bugs attack again, and carry off the Pod People, who also turn out not to be Gelflings. Then the bugs actually almost get them, but Kira grabs Jem and flies down a handy cliff. Jem says that he doen't have wings, but Kira replies that, of course not, he's a BOY! Then a Skekse gets banished, and says NOT to repair the Crystal, because they didn't need to, no, they could just live out here forever. Jem thwacks him, and Skekse gets cut.

Although the characters are Muppets, there are no real jokes. Plenty of adventure. So good, my critical-of-every-detail dad watched it twice a day for who knows how long. Also, in 2008, a sequel called the Power of the Dark Crystal will come out, but with (ugh) ANAMATRONIC PUPPETS. I will watch both, personally.

4 out of 5 stars Mom loves this movie!.......2007-05-18

This is a pretty good movie, it was better to me when I was little though :) Since technology has come so far along now. I couldn't get over the price though, it was $6.99 so I couldn't resist adding it to my collection.

An all time favorite!

5 out of 5 stars Fantasy-children.......2007-05-14

5 out of 5 stars Oh, how I miss the days of puppetry..........2007-05-14

There is just something about vintage special effects (e.g. models, puppetry) that computer generated graphics will never compete with. This is a beautifully, lovingly crafted film that I still enjoy as an adult. It's only afterwards that I think of all the blood, sweat, and tears that must have gone into creating these sets and 'muppets'. I'm still completely in awe...Dark and haunting. Another Jim Henson masterpiece.

Kids' Favorite Songs kicks off with a cackle-worthy parody of Bob Dylan doing "Old McDonald," and from there the groovy gags keep comin' 'round the mountain. Everywhere Elmo turns on Sesame Street monsters spontaneously burst into song, and all because they want him to feature their favorite tunes on his forthcoming radio countdown. For Telly, winnowing the hits to one is akin to Cookie Monster choosing between a macaroon and a figgie bar: at first he's sure that "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" lights his fire, but then he says bye-bye to a black sheep. The street heaves a collective sigh pavementward when word comes down that the countdown is strictly a numbers gig, no music involved. Only Sesame Street could weave well-loved musical numbers around a simple numbers lesson with such wacky pizzazz, making this a countdown that's no letdown for high-spirited parent-preschooler combos. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars My baby is having a great time!.......2007-06-08

My one year old son is often getting tired around 6.30pm. At that time of the day, he does not really want to play and gets frustrated very easily...but he LOVES watching this video! He is moving and kind of dancing when the songs play, he really enjoys it from the beginning to the end. He ends up in a good mood (and Mummy too as a consequence), ready to have diner with no fussing.

5 out of 5 stars A High Quality Product.......2007-05-14

I purchased this for my 16-month-old grandson, and he just loves it. He is king of the short attention span, but he sits and watches the whole thing. As a teacher, I'm interested in the concepts taught, and this DVD does a nice job, but he just loves the action and the music. He recognizes the cover, and brings it to me to put in the DVD player for him.

4 out of 5 stars too much talk.......2007-05-03

This is a good video and it teaches children to count from 10 to 1. My daugter likes it because of the singing but loses interest when they start "talking". She likes "Kids' Favorite Songs 2" better. Not so much talking and more singing.

5 out of 5 stars One of our favorite Sesame Street epsodes.......2007-04-07

Very entertaining ! With all the other kid characters and shows out there Sesame Street is still one of our favorites for learning, fun and entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars Fun for kids AND adults.......2007-04-07

We bought this for our son on his 2nd Birthday, because he had just fallen in love with Elmo. This is a GREAT movie, because we can sing and dance together. His favorite parts are the Count's and Snuffy's songs, but I'm partial to Telly's problem of which song to pick as his favorite. These are classic children's songs that most parents will know. If you don't already, you surely will after a couple viewings of this DVD. My only question is... where did they find that recording of Bob Dylan doing Old MacDonald???

Amazon.com essential video

Lizard-like Draconian Louis Gossett Jr. and his mortal enemy, earthling Dennis Quaid, crash-land on a hostile planet during a brutal space battle. Forced to rely on one another for survival, they overcome their differences and become fast friends. You can almost hear them break into an off-key version of "It's a Small World." German director Wolfgang Petersen, so brutally honest with his film Das Boot, turns warm and cuddly on us with this intergalactic buddy movie. Much of the problem, though, is that the script sets us up for an intriguing encounter, then settles for a simple and sentimental resolution. Noteworthy set design and strong performances, especially by Gossett, push this beyond mere mediocrity. His performance is fascinating, as he must speak in an alien tongue, which he maintains with artistry and consistency. --Rochelle O'Gorman

4 out of 5 stars Nostalgia.......2007-06-21

Excellent story line. However, you may be turned off by the old props and sets. Nothing close to what we have today. I'd buy it only if I wanted to take a stroll down memory lane.

4 out of 5 stars Different sci-fi story..........2007-04-04

This film teaches a lesson from the other side of the political isle than I usually sit, but it tells it well. It is vaguely reminiscent of other films from the 1940's but I can't remember a title. It is a "know thy enemy" film, and teaches about culture clash. I'm not one to respect another culture if it demands it, but if it earns it I do. This film is about two warriors that get stranded together on a dangerously hostile world and have to work together to survive. They learn each other's languages, and culture in a way even a die-hard conservative like me cannot argue with. Perhaps everyone can learn something from this. The film is about right and wrong, and it can change one's perspective. In the end, I remember the audience cheering in the theatres.

4 out of 5 stars I loved it.......2007-03-09

What a great movie. good time you have watchign this one.
Its a one of a kind movie.
if your a star wars or star gate fan like my girlfriend, you will truly like this movie. its the only sci-fi movie with ''sad'' part in it. really good movie suited for nearly anyone. watch this one with your girlfriend rather then your beer drinking pals.

5 out of 5 stars A must-see for SF lovers.......2007-01-11

Great touching story of friendship between enemies and in this case, species.
Good lesson to learn an apply.
A classic movie I wanted to own and show to my kids.

4 out of 5 stars Different .......2007-01-08

I have seen this movie many times while growing up. Its definately a different approach to Science Fiction, but not too bad. Basically, you get to see how mortal enemies can work out their differences, and work together. A movie with a message.

This second motion-picture outing for the adventurous Muppets finds them in London hunting down jewel thieves while staying at the city's most cheerfully derelict dive, the Happiness Hotel. Filled with song and dance (and swimming!) numbers, this Jim Henson-directed feature is worth seeing, if for nothing else than to see the cantankerous Charles Grodin (Beethoven) swoon over Miss Piggy. But The Great Muppet Caper has a lot more going for it: cameos by John Cleese, Peter Falk, and Oscar the Grouch, among others; Miss Piggy parading down a catwalk; and Kermit the Frog on a bicycle. The Muppets are fond of breaking down that pesky fourth wall, which gives the movie some of its cleverest moments and will elicit the biggest laughs from the kids. (Kermit to Miss Piggy: "You're overacting. You're hamming it up.") By the time a framed Miss Piggy is freed and the real jewel thieves are caught, you'll forget the occasional slow spots and remember the musical numbers and the banter. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Description

Stop the presses! The crime of the century has occurred, and investigative reporters Kermit, Fozzie, and Gonzo are out to crack the case in this song-filled, star-studded extravaganza directed by the legendary Jim Henson. Our heroes arrive in London to interview Lady Holiday (Diana Rigg), a high-fashion designer whose priceless diamond necklace has just been stolen. But when Kermit mistakes lovely receptionist/would-be model Miss Piggy for her aristocratic employer, it's love at first sight. Unfortunately, Lady Holiday's scheming brother (Charles Grodin) is also wooing the sultry swine -- so he can frame her for another brazen jewel heist! Now it's up to Kermit and his Muppet pals to clear Piggy's name and catch the real culprits. Packed with music, remarkable production numbers, and hilarious cameo performances (including John Cleese, Peter Falk, Jack Warden, Robert Morley, and Peter Ustinov), this restored and remastered 50th Anniversary Edition of THE GREAT MUPPET CAPER is the wackiest story ever told! ~~(c) The Muppets Holding Company, LLC and BVHE. Excellent service and quick shipping...what more could one want?

5 out of 5 stars my kids love anything muppets!.......2007-03-12

This one included!! No problems at all, works fine. Very satisfied!!

4 out of 5 stars Fun Ride for all!.......2007-03-09

If it has Kermit it can do no wrong in my opinion. This one is a bit dated in the early eighties but parts are too funny to ignore. Miss Piggy climbing up John Cleese's House; their unusual plane travel; and of course the Happiness Hotel. Charles Grodin is a great villain and Diana Rigg gives an air of class to the whimsy. Kids will love and adults can think back. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Muppets!.......2007-01-13

This movie is hilarious, by far the best muppet original!! I highly recommend for all ages.

Product Description

Will Ferrell may look like the guy next door but there's nothing ordinary about his comic creations. From 1995 to 2002 he dominated Saturday Night Live with characters as different as Craig the Cheerleader and President George W. Bush. See the best of Celebrity Jeopardy, Bobbi & Marti Culp, Morning Latte and Robert Goulet - along with plenty of yelling, near nudity and more cowbell. Plus there's extra material, including Will's favorite scenes that were cut after dress rehearsal.

<B>The Best of Will Ferrell - Vol. 1</B>
The latest in the line of Saturday Night Live's great character players (including Dan Aykroyd and Phil Hartman), Will Ferrell showcases his fearlessness in this 72-minute collection. Whether exposing skin or taking a pause beyond the normal limits, Ferrell induces hard laughs like with the cowbell rocker in the first sketch. The selection includes Ferrell's spot-on impressions of Cub announcer Harry Caray, game-show icon Alex Trebek, President Bush, and Inside the Actor's Studio host James Lipton. As with other SNL Best of... retrospectives, there are short snippets to go along with the full-length sketches that include excellent selections of Ferrell's returning characters Craig the Cheerleader and the swinging Culp brothers. A must for fans, and the DVD includes an intriguing audition footage in which Ferrell leaps from character and character.

<B>The Best of Will Ferrell - Vol. 2</B>
There is no drop-off in laughs from the first to second volume of Will Ferrell's work on Saturday Night Live. Giggle along with his recurring characters, including James Lipton (interviewing Kate Hudson as a wonderfully ditzy Drew Barrymore), a wickedly clever George W. Bush, and one-half of the smarmy Lovers couple. This volume spotlights Ferrell's ability to go successfully over-the-top whether as an overbearing boss (check out how long he keeps stabbing a doomed coworker), a strict airplane pilot, an absent-minded doctor, or the world's oldest baby. There's plenty of unabashed (near) nudity and risky violence, which keeps the SNL tradition of "Not Ready for Prime Time"; check out what longtime hosts of the morning talk show resort to when the much-needed teleprompter fails. All that plus "Janet Reno's Dance Party" (with guest Rudy Giuliani) makes this the perfect pick-up for those who could not get enough of Ferrell with volume 1. --Doug Thomas

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The god of comedy.......2007-01-18

The title says it all! Will Ferrell is hilariously funny and dramatic in ways that will find you rolled up on the floor crying!

4 out of 5 stars Vol 1 is good but Vol 2 is not as good. .......2006-12-16

Vol 2 has some repeats of things that were in Vol 1. Some of the sketches seen on Vol 1 are more extended verisons like the sketch were Will is wearing a half t-shirt and a thong like underwear to the office, celebrating patriotism. Another one would be an extended verison of Will being born. I didnt find this as funny especially towards the end. Vol 1 is definitely better. You should buy it if you want Will Ferrel beating up Rudy Giuliani (former Mayor of New York). I got a kick out of that. But I do suggest people buying it separately.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2006-11-02

Sketch after sketch, this DVD delivers. It's clear to see why Ferrell is now a film star.

3 out of 5 stars Don't bother with Vol. 2.......2006-08-22

Will Ferrell is in my oppinion the best cast member SNL has ever had. Vol. 1 of this collection includes pretty much all you need. All his famous characters: Marty Culp, Gene Frenkle in the famous "More Cowbell" sketch, Alex Trebek in the "Turd Ferguson" Celebrity Jeopardy sketch, The Spartans are on there of course, Robert Goulet, James Lipton, Harry Carry, The Lovers... The only thing it lacks is a really good Bush. There is a short Bush segment, but not the finest. Vol. 2 opens with the "Access of Evil" Bush sketch, but unless you are a die hard Ferrell as Bush fan, don't waste your time with vol. 2. The only things Vol. 1 really lacks is a "Morning Latte" or "GET OFF THE SHED!" I would have loved to see that on there, but alas, one can't camplain too much. Plus, Vol. 1 has a hilarious blooper reel and Will's apperance on Conan as Robert Goulet. Bottom line, don't bother with vol. 2, there's nothing on it you can't live without. I give this collection 3 stars just because vol. 2 isn't worth it. You can buy them seperatly, and had I known ahead of time, I would have rather than buying the set. I give vol. 1 5 stars. It is simply "scrumtrelescent"

4 out of 5 stars Best part = the devil........2006-07-20

I would probably buy this just to watch Will Ferrell play the devil... one of the funniest sketches on earth, and the devil enters to King Crimson's "Lark's Tongues in Aspic pt. I"... That only helps more. That didn't help any of you potential buyers.
