5 out of 5 stars Greatest action film of the past 15 years! By Ian Colvin, 12-year old filmmaker.......2007-05-26

John Woo's 1992 action film "Hard Boiled" is without a doubt the greatest shoot-em' up actioneer of the past 15 years. Finally Dragon Dynasty is releasing a 2-disc ultimate edition supposedly even containing a newly shot featurette where we see all the locations from the film now-a-days. It looks to be a great package that I will certainly (and gladly) display on my shelf.

John Schlesinger (Midnight Cowboy) directed this gripping, entertaining 1977 thriller that centers on graduate student Dustin Hoffman (The Graduate, Tootsie). Hoffman plays a sullen and cowardly loner haunted by the suicide of his father, a suspected communist. He is drawn into a murky web of international intrigue when his brother, CIA agent Doc Levy, played by Roy Scheider (Jaws, The French Connection), is murdered by a former Nazi (Laurence Olivier) who has come to the United States to reclaim a valuable stash of diamonds. Babe (Hoffman) must confront his fears of the past as he runs for his life and tries to avenge his brother's death at the same time. Featuring a classic torture sequence and a terrific cast that includes William Devane and Marthe Keller, this film written by William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, All the President's Men) stands as a great entertainment and as one of the seminal films of the 1970s. --Robert Lane

3 out of 5 stars Ehhh........2007-04-17

After reading Goldman's novel of the same name and being surprised by some of the twists and turns , I was eager to see how the book was converted to film. To learn how Scylla the spy, Levy the student, Janey the Provider, and Szell the Nazi were handled. I was disappointed.

Don't get me wrong - the movie is a fine thriller. It just doesn't match up to what I'd been expecting. In the novel, Janey's identity is not revealed until halfway through the book, at which point you're shocked to learn the true nature of Scylla's relationship with him. This is a startling conclusion that is totally glossed over in the film. Also, while Elsa is transparently in cahoots with the bad guys even in the book, here it's made even more obvious and the viewer's small doubts of, "Is she good or bad?" are removed.

The movie is good. You should see it. But read the book afterward.

5 out of 5 stars MY TOOTH IS KILLING ME .......2006-12-17

What do you get when you combine top notch acting and a stellar cast? You get the 1977 action thriller "The Marathon Man" presented in it's 1.85:1 widescreen aspect ratio. The dvd transfer and Dolby Digital 5.1 sound from Paramount Studios is excellent. The video transfer doesn't seem to contain any dust or debris and the image is very impressive, considering this film is from the 1970's.The acting is superb and the chilling performance given by Laurence Olivier as the former Nazi "Szell" is outstanding.I've always hated the sound of the dentist's drill and after seeing it in the hands of "Szell",I hate it even more.Suspense, action and intrigue this movie has it all and after 30 years it's still highly entertaining.Only one question still remains "is it safe?"

The dvd bonus features include: Theatrical Trailer, Cast & Crew interviews, Rehearsal Footage, Original "Making of Marathon Man" Featurette.

3 out of 5 stars Great thriller if you skip the first hour..........2006-12-05

The performances are stellar, the story is satisfying, the fear is real and you will never head to the dentist again without this film on your mind. All that said, the actual thriller doesn't begin until an hour in. There is some interesting setup and character building in the first hour, but most is not necessary to the story. Although, once you get through that, it's quite a ride. Every scene Goldman wrote puts Hoffman in the worst situation imaginable, all while maintaining a very true since of reality. A true thriller.

Picture quality on this DVD is 4.5 out of 5 and the sound is a 3.5, but thus far, the best print I have seen of it. Never saw it in the theater. :(

3 out of 5 stars Marathon Man.......2006-11-04

We enjoyed this film in the theater years ago and it holds up well. Fun to see Dustin Hoffman when he is young. Sir Laurence Olivier is always interesting to watch. You won't see this on TV.
JGH

5 out of 5 stars Don't worry! I'm not going into that cavity!.......2006-07-29

The deficiencies in the DVD notwithstanding, the film is absolutely worthwhile if you are a fan of the genre. Casting is superb, especially Olivier. The plot is rather intricate, and it will almost certainly take more than one viewing to fully appreciate it's depth. This is, of course, not a problem, when you have a film as terrific as this one. See it soon, and witness a classic from one of the best decades in the history of Hollywood.

Product Description

At his best, director John Woo turns action movies into ballets of blood and bullets grounded in character drama. Face/Off marks Woo's first American film to reach the pitched level of his best Hong Kong work (Hard-Boiled). He takes a patently absurd premise--hero and villain exchange identities by literally swapping faces in science-fiction plastic surgery--and creates a double-barreled revenge film driven by the split psyches of its newly redefined characters. FBI agent Sean Archer (John Travolta) must play the villain to move through the underworld while psychotic terrorist Castor Troy (Nicolas Cage) becomes a perversely paternal family man while using every tool at his disposal to destroy his nemesis. Travolta vamps Cage's tics and flamboyant excess with the grace of a dancer after his transformation from cop to criminal, while Cage plays the sullen, bottled-up agent excruciatingly trapped behind the face of the man who killed his son. His attempts to live up to the terrorist's reputation become cathartic explosions of violence that both thrill and terrify him. This is merely icing on the cake for action fans, the dramatic backbone for some of the most visceral action thrills ever. Woo fills the screen with one show-stopping set piece after another, bringing a poetic grace to the action freakout with sweeping camerawork and sophisticated editing. This marriage of melodrama and mayhem ups the ante from cops-and-robbers clichés to a conflict of near-mythic levels.

I am a big fan of John Travolta and Nicolas Cage. both are outstanding in this twist of face..... Loved it....

5 out of 5 stars One of the best action movies made.......2007-05-25

Its great but where is a special edition or directors cut?

1 out of 5 stars who are these people that give films like this five stars?.......2007-05-25

I read some of these reviewers and I wonder if they are making my food at restuarants, if they are saving lives in the ER or are the ones who run right out to buy some fools CD from American Idol, or talk in superlatives about the new Snoop Dog video that was on MTV. Do they sell tires in Spokane or crawdaddies in Batan Rouge?

Face off is truly an atrocious film, from start to finish. Cage and Travolta have no on screen chemistry and it is so shallow, so utterly beneath me to even want to describe the assanine plot and utter paltry dialouge.

For years I have thought this, and will continue to until I leave this medium, but Face Off is unequivically one of the worst films ever made. Pure trash.

An excellent non-stop action movie. One can definitely tell old Johnny Wu did this one. If you like guns, shooting, and macho mindless bloodshed, I have to say this movie is a must see. Cage and Travolta, after seeing this movie, are the ONLY ones that gave this film what it has.

Mission Impossible
A flashy, splashy summer-movie blockbuster that's fun and exciting without being mindless? That's the impossible mission accomplished by director Brian De Palma, star-coproducer Tom Cruise, and the crack team of Mission: Impossible. Based on the '60s TV show and an almost impenetrably complex (but nonetheless thrilling) original story by David Koepp (Jurassic Park) and Steven Zaillian (Schindler's List), with a screenplay by Koepp and Robert Towne (Chinatown, Shampoo), Mission: Impossible begins with veteran agent Jim Phelps (Jon Voight) and his expert crew embarking on a mission that goes horribly, horribly wrong. But nothing is what it seems. The nail-biting set piece--always a signature of director De Palma (Carrie, The Untouchables)--in which Cruise is lowered from the ceiling to retrieve information from a computer in a high-security vault--is an instant classic. But perhaps even more impressive, at least in retrospect, is a flashback sequence in which two characters attempt to reconstruct a series of events from multiple points of view. It's pretty daring and sophisticated stuff for a big-budget spy movie, but brains were always what put the Mission: Impossible team ahead of the competition, anyway, no? --Jim Emerson

Mission Impossible II
Visually stunning, and a likely must for John Woo aficionados, the second Mission: Impossible outing from megastar Tom Cruise suffers from an inconsistent tone and tired plot devices--not only recycled from other films, but repeated throughout the film. Despite remarkable cinematography and awe-inspiring, trademark Woo photography, the movie offers a tepid story from legendary screenwriter-director Robert Towne (Chinatown, Without Limits) and a host of other writers, most uncredited.

It is, regrettably, as forgettable as the first big-budget, big box-office MI in 1996, and it's clear (as Towne confirms) that the plot was developed around Woo- and Cruise-written action sequences. The film combines equal elements of romance and action, and is best when it features the stunning allure of Thandie Newton as Nyah, a master thief recruited by the sinewy charms of Ethan Hunt (a fit Cruise). Deeply in love after a passionate night, the couple must then combat MI nemesis (and Nyah's former lover) Sean Ambrose (Ever After's Dougray Scott). Ambrose holds hostage a virus and its cure, and offers them to the highest bidder.

Woo's famed mythic filmmaking is far from subtle, with heroic Hunt frequently slow-motion walking through fire, smoke, or other similar devices, replete with a white dove among pigeons to signal his presence. The emphasis on romance is an attempt to develop character and a more human side to superspy Hunt, but still the dreary story proves a distraction from the exciting action sequences. John Polson (as an MI team member) is an Aussie talent to keep an eye on. --N.F. Mendoza

Mission Impossible III
At the time of its release, Mission: Impossible III's box office was plagued by the publicity backlash against couch-jumping star Tom Cruise. It's too bad, because this third installment of the spy thriller franchise deserved a better reception than it got. First-time feature director J.J. Abrams (bigwig TV director/producer of Lost, Alias, & Felicity) proves more than able-bodied in creating a Mission: Impossible that's leaner and less over-stylized than John Woo's sequel and less confusing than Brian De Palma's original. Plot is still a throwaway here (Cruise's Ethan Hunt rescues his kidnapped former trainee and works to steal a device that... well, we don't really know what it does, but it's something about mass destruction that costs $850 million), but the action sequences, particularly one where Ethan faces down a helicopter on a bridge and gets flung hard against the side of a car, are particularly impressive since Cruise, at 44, is still doing most of his own stunts and shows no hint of the weathered look that's struck his action-star peers. (Though no Mission: Impossible stunt will ever be quite as simultaneously nail-biting and funny as the first film's wire-dangling break-in of CIA headquarters.)

Mission: Impossible III boasts a pedigreed cast, particularly Oscar® winner Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote) as baddie arms dealer Owen Davian. Hoffman plays Owen all teeth-clenched and cool, especially when threatening to kill Ethan in front of his lovely new wife (Michelle Monaghan) who has no idea of his spy life. But in his first action-film lead role, Hoffman's almost too calm and collected to really make a memorable villain, especially when the rest of the cast--Ving Rhames (the only other cast member to return for all three films), Asian film star Maggie Q, and an underused Jonathan Rhys-Meyers--are a highlight as Ethan's IMF team. Mission: Impossible is still fun popcorn spy fare, and if Cruise chooses to end the franchise here, at least he goes out on a high note. --Ellen A. Kim

5 out of 5 stars Best 'Mission' yet.......2007-01-10

This Mission is the best yet. If it were in a different genre and had less tabloid rubbish surrounding it, it would be nominated for an Oscar. JJ Abrams is a great director. Love the first scene & someone should cast the 'I'd marry him' girl in a leading role immediately!

The brainy, paranoid science fiction of writer Philip K. Dick has inspired one visionary classic (Blade Runner) and two above-average action movies (Total Recall and Minority Report). Paycheck aspires to follow in their footsteps: An engineer (Ben Affleck, Chasing Amy) routinely agrees to have his memory erased after every job so that he doesn't know what he's done. But after the biggest job of his life, he discovers that not only has he refused a $90 million paycheck, he's sent himself an envelope full of things he doesn't recognize--and he doesn't remember doing any of this. As he unravels the plot, he discovers he's also fallen in love (with Uma Thurman, Kill Bill) and invented a dangerous device for his former boss (Aaron Eckhart, Erin Brockovich). Affleck is bland, the script ruins a cunning idea, and the direction--from the normally dynamic John Woo (Face/Off)--plods along, aimless and bored. --Bret Fetzer

I'm not saying the movie is "one of the best movies" in the whole entire world. . . i.e. Shawshank Redemption... having said that, this movie keeps your mind going, keep your mind thinking, and overall, it is entertaining, no one deserve an OSCAR Award, well maybe the Parrot, but it is a good good good movie, would of got 5 Stars if we could really tell the future. :) lol Just kidding, thats not why it didnt get a 5 stars, for a 5 stars i think this movie should of had a bigger twist at the end or even for the fact that it leaves you wanting a little more than how it ended. People give 5 stars like there are generals or the government. lol.

1 out of 5 stars Dock it!.......2007-03-31

Roger Ebert hated this movie. So did I. This heretofore unimaginable confluence of opinion means one of us has to die.

4 out of 5 stars Change of heart!!!!!.......2007-02-12

I used to use these reviews to see which movies i would buy, but after seeing that most of them rated paycheck so poorly thats over with. It is one of my favorite movies and i watch it all the time. Stop trying to analyze the movie so much, its a freakin action movie and it has good action in it. If u wanna pinpoint every flaw in the movie go sit with ebert and roper or somebody, they seem to suck at rating movies too. Kill Bill was freakin weak and stupid to me but it had a lot of good action in it and thats all im lookin for in a ACTION movie. Stop trying to be a critic and just watch the movie!

4 out of 5 stars Fun & action packed.......2007-01-04

I think people are being too critical of this film. It is very fun, and I thought it had a clever story line. You will be on the edge of your seat with it. If you watch this movie with the intent of entertainment, then you will really enjoy it. Just don't try and over analyze the science depicted; remember, it is just for fun. At the price Amazon has it for, it is worth owning if you are a movie collector.
The audio/video quality is very good too.

1 out of 5 stars The movie title describes the gig .......2006-11-02

Like John Woo's other American films, "Paycheck" shows none of the innovation, excitement, storytelling or other qualities that made such movies as "Hard Boiled" so incredible. "Paycheck" is a science fiction movie with no science, an action movie with very little action, a romance without any passion. Even the McGuffin, which should be super cool, is just blah and unexciting. The film makes no sense, includes plot holes aplenty, and doesn't have enough energy or fun to compensate. Affleck, Thurman, Giametti - all of them are good actors that have made far better movies. It's not their fault; lazy scripting and direction are the culprits here. Spend your paycheck on a better movie.

John Travolta is Vic Deakins, a bomber pilot who launches a devilish plan to hijack two nuclear missiles for big-time extortion. Vic never sweats, spews out great one-liners, knocks off money men with glee, toys with killing half a million people... he even smokes!

If you giggled at his "Ain't it cool" line from the trailer, you're in the right frame of mind for this comedic action film. Never as gritty or semi-realistic--or for that matter as heart-thumping--as the original Die Hard, Broken Arrow still delivers. If Travolta is cast against type, everyone else is by the numbers; Christian Slater as Hale, the earnest copilot looking to foil the plot, Samantha Mathis as the brave park ranger caught in the middle, Frank Whaley as an eager diplomat, Delroy Lindo as a right-minded colonel. As with his previous script (the superior Speed), writer Graham Yost moves everything quickly along as Hale and the ranger try to cut off Deakins's plan over a variety of terrains. We have plane crashes, car chases, a pursuit through an abandoned mine, a helicopter-train shootout, and lots of fighting between boys. Each time Hale finds himself perfectly in place to foil Deakins. You're suppose to laugh at the unbelievable situations. That's where Arrow is deceptive: its tone is right for the laughter compared to the mean-spirited Schwarzenegger and Stallone action films with labored jokes. Hong Kong master director John Woo (The Killer, Hard Target) pulls out all the stops--slow motion of Hale and Deakins's gymnastic gun play, nifty stunts, countdowns to doomsday. Woo may know action, but he needs more guidance in creating unique and stunning special effects. This is action entertainment at its cheesiest. Travolta and Woo later reteamed for Face/Off. --Doug Thomas

Description

When a B-3 Stealth Bomber crashes in the Utah desert during a top-secret test run, the military quickly moves in to retrieve its two "broken arrows." But the situation spins wildly out of control after one of the pilots reveals the crash to be part of an incredible nuclear extortion plot.

1 out of 5 stars Broken Depth, nauseating....trite, for fans of flat, uncharging films.......2007-05-25

everyone should burn this dvd. Horrible acting, slow, moronic script, lackluster dialouge, Travolta is truly second rate B actor in this, Slater is appalling as per usual, (with the exception of Pump Up the Volume, which I found rather delicious as a feel good film)

The film just doesn't go anywhere, it's a movie you forget about a week later after you watch it. It is simply a 'fair' film, with frosh dialouge from a liberal arts major at a state college. In this reviewers opinion, it is probably in the top twenty or so worst acting films in the cinemas history. No emotion, no depth, a zero star. Horrendously crafted. It is as bad, or as comparable to 'Con Air', and we all know how truly pathetic that was.

5 out of 5 stars Broken Arrow...Yes it is cool!!.......2007-05-06

Catching a line from this movie the suspense in this movie is "cool". John Travolta and Christian Slater are at odds in this 1996 movie on the theft of two nuclear warheads in rugged terrain of Utah. At times it has you on the edge of your seat. It certainly is a far cry from Travolta's roles in Grease and Saturday Night Fever but one of his best!!

5 out of 5 stars Broken Arrow.......2007-03-09

I had originally taped this from TV but liked it so much that I wanted to buy it. It is a great movie and I like both the actors in it.

4 out of 5 stars John Woo's first American movie.......2007-01-16

Lots of action and typical John Woo action film. It's interesting to see American stars (Travolta and Slater)act under his direction. Travolta's performance is excellent as the antagonist.

3 out of 5 stars Good Movie - BUT NOT ANAMORPHIC.......2006-09-25

While the film is entertaining and Travolta and Slater play off of each other like oil and water, the aspect ratio is not Anamorphic, so be warned if you have a 16X9. Hope they correct that in a future release because this one keeps Wooing me back. (sorry)

    4 out of 5 stars Better than I remembered........2007-06-21

I remember when this film was first released. I didn't get a chance to see this film in theaters nor did I really care to. I had seen the first M:I, and although I thought it was a fairly decent film, I didn't think it was anything to brag about. When I saw previews for M:I-2, it really had me at confusion. The film didn't seem to resemble anything of the first film. While the first one was more targeted towards adults, this one was clearly aiming for a younger audience. Naturally, I thought this movie was going to be dumb and that is exactly what I thought when I finally saw it. I was 13 yrs old, I really did not understand anything that was going on-just something about a disease and all the action scenes that were already overplayed in the tons of commercials I saw for the movie. After I saw it, I told everybody from that point on to ignore this one.

That was back in 2001. Its 2007 and I am now 19 yrs old. M:I-3 has now been made which I thought was an incredibly awesome movie. Not that long ago one of my friends and I were having a conversation about all sorts of movies. We just happened to come accross this one. I told him how M:I and M:I-3 were really good, and M:I-2 was bad. He on the other hand admitted that he actually liked the 2nd one. Seeing is how it was yrs since I saw M:I-2, I didn't really remember much except what I mentioned above. So I started checking up on it again. I saw the trailer on youtube and to my surprise, it looked pretty good. Not long afterwards, the movie came on TNT. Obviousely I watched and surprisingly enough, I enjoyed Very Much!! While it does not live up to M:I-3, it definetly earned a spot on my favorite movies list. Here's the plot.

Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is called into action when a fellow IMF agent Sean Ambrose (Douggray Scott) has gone rogue. Ambrose has stolen a deadly biologically engineered virus known as Chimera, a virus that kills your red blood cells if infected. There is a cure called Valeraphon which can only save a persons if treated within 20 years. However, after 20 hours, nothing can save. Hunt with the help a thief, Nyah Nordaf Hall (Thandie Newton) they must infiltrate and find out what Ambrose's plans are for the virus. Hunt must also at the same time dig deeper into discovering the truth about why this disease was created in the first place.

That basically says it. Just to add a few more things, although I actually like this movie now, I stil believe its the weakest of the M:I's. It surprises me very much that of all of them, this was grossed the most money. I think the real problem with this film is the very fact that it tries too hard to be "cool". First lets start off with the ridiculous concepts- Tom Cruise rock climbing with no gear except powder for his hands, his mission being assigned through sunglasses, the car chase with Thandie Newton (there was no suspense and the characters appear to be having fun). Then theres the action scenes. I know John Woo has his style but I think it was a bit overdone. Too many quick cuts and overuse of explosions. Then theres all the rock music in the film, I do not think that was necessary. And then there's Tom Cruise's look with the long wavy hair. I really think his hair was like that to make this movie seem "cool". I am sure the original M"I series would never have had these elements. I really think this film would have been alot better if it were its own movie rather than an M:I. Well anyway, I still suggest. But if anyone has a chance, definetly check out M:I-3. THAT ONE WAS FRIGGIN AWESOME

2 out of 5 stars The first movie was MUCH better.......2007-06-07

As others have mentioned, there was no Mission Impossible Team, except for Ving Rhames, and Anthony Hopkins, the boss, (Interesting, we got to see the face that goes with the voice on the tape that introduces the case.)

I thought the worst was the agonizing slow motion flips and kicks (often while shooting a gun in midair, upside down).

2 out of 5 stars Can we say plagiarism?.......2007-06-05

I was watching this on TV recently after having seen it only once before when it first came out and it dawned on me that it has the same basic storyline as Hitchcock's Notorious with Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman (1946). But the result is vastly different. Notorious doesn't rely on high-tech props or unbelievable stunts - just pure good acting and suspense like only Hitchcock can do it.

3 out of 5 stars they get one more star for including the Ben Stiller spoof, "Mission: Improbable.".......2007-03-19

I think it took me two seeing to realize how yucky this movie was; there was so much that was wrong. I think the first thing that we notice is that this is not about the Impossible Mission Force, but Tom Cruise. So, aside form the name, the music, and the jargon, this has nothing to do with the classic show.

This was a let-down. Leonard Nemoy in "I Am Spock" mentioned that he loved the teamwork aspect of the series. I agree: there was something about Mr. Phelps and the IMF all piling into the getaway van and the classic Mission: Impossible recessional theme that let you know that there was a job well done because each member did his part. Like the guy said, "The greatest temporal and spiritual blessings which always come from faithfulness and concerted effort, never attended individual exertion or enterprise."

Another problem was the physics. The cycle-jousting forgets that when two objects traveling at 50 mph a piece collide, the cumulative force felt by them is not 50, but 100 mph. Talk about being jelly! And the gun in the sand: how does kicking it forward make it go one and half meters vertically into the air?

This film has plot, in the sense of having action, or a series of events. But did I mention the plot holes? How did Cruise happen to have a Richard Roxburgh mask so handy? I guess it was next to the handy duct tape. And how did they change clothes so quickly?

Yes, there is conflict: Cruise versus the Aussie, and Cruise versus the supermodel supertheif. The theme is not so obvious. There are messages about courage, duty, and self sacrifice. These are helpful, but seem to be mere distracting tinsel.

Being John Woo, this film is essentially about style. This is good for artists who have plot, theme, and characterization, and would like to perfect their craft. As a standalone attribute, however, this film leaves something to be desired. Anyone who has been on a date knows that looks only go so far. And the same applies to movies.

    *

The transfer is perfect, and they get one more star for including the Ben Stiller spoof, "Mission: Improbable."

4 out of 5 stars Unrealistic, but nice.......2007-01-23

Think people who like realistic movies will not like this one. But from other hand - if not pay attention on details and just relax on couch and enjoy all special effect and action - this movie is very nice.
At least second part is definitely better then 1st part.

Having earned Hollywood's respect with blockbusters like Face/Off and Mission: Impossible 2, Hong Kong action master John Woo lends his signature style to serious World War II action in Windtalkers. Recognizing the long-forgotten contribution of Navajo "code talkers," whose use of an unbreakable Navajo-language radio code was instrumental in defeating the Japanese, the film serves as an admirable tribute to those Native American heroes. Unfortunately, it falls short of importance with its standard-issue story about a battle-scarred sergeant (Nicolas Cage) assigned to protect a code-talker (Adam Beach, from Smoke Signals), with unspoken orders to kill him if Japanese capture is imminent. This allows for an involving drama of hard-won friendship, but cardboard supporting characters suffer in the shadow of nonstop action that's as repetitious as it is technically impressive. Windtalkers is best appreciated as a more substantial vehicle for Woo's trademark ballet of bullets. --Jeff Shannon

3 out of 5 stars Poor story telling - L:ots of Unrelated Action.......2007-06-22

The movie SEEMS to focus on Nic Cage's character. However, there were other themes that the story teller only half-heartedly explored. I felt he truly did a poor job developing Nic's change of heart that it made it unrealistic at the end. Overall he could have done a much better job telling this story, there was so much to work with!

    1 out of 5 stars LOL.......2007-05-28

The worst war movie I have ever seen. It is in no way realistic. And to call it an action movie is an insulting joke. War shouldn't be treated as "action."

5 out of 5 stars Well Done John Woo.......2007-04-16

Personally I view Windtalkers as one of the most realistic war movie, from the "horror of war" point of view.
That's why I feel very sorry that this movie has the same fate with "When Trumpets Fade". Too much negative comments for an interesting movie.
Anyway, Well done John Woo. Looking forward to your next War Movie.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Action Pic!.......2007-04-14

Windtalkers is an awesome action picture and I recommend this to those who like action, war and Nicholas Cage (The Rock).

It is not as realistic as Flags of Our Fathers (where people complained about the lack of action) and far more realisitc than Die Hard.

Compared to what has been going on at Hollywood productions (releases) in the last few years I can recommend this film highly, as I like Black Hawk Down, We Were Soldiers and Behind Enemy Lines as well. All these movies have something in common and that is they are based on History. While Black Hawk Down and We Were Soldiers were more accurate to history than Behind Enemy Lines and Windtalkers, I can say that these films are worthy action pics.

Well done to John Woo, and please more where that came from. How about a John Woo Berlin/Germany film (1945) with Nicholas Cage?

3 out of 5 stars Im 14 and seen lots of war movies and this one..........2007-03-25

It was just OK because it was just totally unrealistic.I watched this with a friend and every time nicolas Cage ran down the screen we just thought, here we go again nicolas cage kills ALL!!! Okay there would be a whole trenchful of japs and nicolas Cage would run over and kill them all with just one clip from his Thompson. Talk about unrealistic. Plus this movie lacked blood and gore!!! In the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan some guy gets off the landing craft, gets shot in the stomach and his intestines fall all over the beach. In Windtalkers, when someone gets shot in the stomach, a hole and one drop of blood spurts out. Not graphical enough. Me and my friend watched saving private ryan a few years ago and thought it was the greatest war movie ever(which is very true). After we watched this we were pissed off and threw in Enemy At The Gates(Which isnt half bad). So if your depressed or pissed and looking to cool down get Saving Private Ryan or Enemy At The Gates. It really helps to think you are actually on the battlefeild yourself and that just didnt happen here.

Redemption for director Michael Cimino and burgeoning stardom for actor Mickey Rourke were on the agenda when Year of the Dragon was released in 1985, and even if those things didn't quite come to pass, the result was nevertheless an entertaining, at times even compelling film. Cimino, seven years removed from his Oscar triumph The Deer Hunter and five years past the debacle that was (and still is) Heaven's Gate, made a move back into the mainstream with this violent tale about New York's Chinatown, where gangs and heroin-dealing Chinese "triads" hold sway--at least until police captain Stanley White comes on the scene, fiercely determined to put the bad guys out of business. As portrayed by Rourke, White is arrogant, boorish, and bullheaded, a thoughtless jerk who puts anyone who cares about him in mortal danger, all of which we're supposed to forgive because he served in Vietnam and is so righteously intent on doing his job. Problem is, White is almost completely unlikable, rendering his relationships with his long-suffering wife (Caroline Kava) and his TV reporter girlfriend (a wooden Ariane) implausible in the extreme. Add to that a script (by Cimino and Oliver Stone) filled with stilted, macho dialogue and a level of facile racism and sexism that would be unacceptable by new millennium standards, and you've got a tough sell. Still, Cimino knows how to direct the action sequences, and he's able to sustain a good level of tension as the story builds toward its inevitable confrontation between White and young crime lord Joey Tai (John Lone, channeling Al Pacino in The Godfather: Part II). And the aftermath? Cimino made only four movies in the ensuing twenty years, none of them exactly blockbusters, while Rourke sank into a self-inflicted oblivion from which he has yet to recover. Not exactly the hoped-for outcome, but neither of them should be ashamed to have Year of the Dragon on his resume. --Sam Graham

    5 out of 5 stars A Cinematic Treasure!.......2007-04-03

The sets of 'Chinatown' were constructed and photographed at Dino de Laurentiis' film studio in North Carolina. I know because I saw them while visiting the set. The real Chinatown has streets so narrow you could not possibly film on them. However, that's where the 'pretend' ends and the gritty reality of life on Canal Street begins.

While this movie was made over 20 years ago, it not only holds up over time, it gets better with age. It's like the best Dim Sum you ever had. You want it again and again. I am delighted it is now out on DVD. I just wish they would re-release 'Year Of The Dragon' in theaters so a new generation of filmgoers could see the genius involved.

John Lone, as always, is quiet elegance. A wonderful actor with one of the best faces in the business. Mickey Rourke was Mickey Rourke. The guy we fell in love with. Not the Mickey Rourke of today who has had so much plastic surgery we can't recognize him anymore. He is brash, crass, electric. A real spitfire of an actor. Ariane, poor soul, was badly miscast. The material was way over her head.

You see small parts in the film played by actors who were just getting started in the business. Eddie Jones, the great character actor who played my daughter's grandfather in a Harry Kondolian play in NYC, is the tough Cop on horseback in the first part of the film. He is still around playing great roles. John Lone and Ariane have long since left the screen. I really miss Lone. A wonderful actor.

The film is not a small film. It's big in grandure and in scope. Lone travels to Thailand, Hong Kong. This film sneaks up on you when you least expect it and makes you think. The writing is superb. Cinematography incredible. Music, acting, you name it. The very best film has to offer.

As someone who photographed Chinatown for many years here in NYC, it is very special to me. I love this film. I just wish millions of people could see it now in DVD and be as thrilled by it.

3 out of 5 stars Year of the Drinking Game.......2006-10-14

Okay, line up as many shot glasses as you can find, play the movie, and you drink:
-every time Mickey Rourke's character says something racist
-every time Mickey Rourke's character mentions spare ribs
-every time Ariane has a gratuitous nude scene
Even if all you've got is lite beer, you'll be hammered by the time Capt. Stanley White gets his transfer orders in the third act.

1 out of 5 stars Did Mickey Rourke write the rest of the reviews here?.......2006-07-25

What's the difference between this movie and a Schwarzenneger movie? Answer: A Schwarzenneger movie has better dialogues, a better plot, and better acting.
How could the guy who made Deer Hunter come up with this dud? More intriguing still, how can anybody say anything nice about this colossal disappointment.

4 out of 5 stars One of MY TOP 10 movies of all-time.......2005-11-04

SERIUOSLY. this film is that good. a film in its time(1985), truly that was misunderstood. look at by critcs as too racist and violent, but really wasnt. basically, yotd portrayed how life was and is in NY Chinatown(underworld). mickey rourke(Captain White) was 'my idol' after seeing yotd for the 1st time back in 86-87(only 13), a great performance as the straight ahead, no-nonsense, ex-Vietnam vet, but loving to the ladies, NYPD Captain in Chinatown. as Cap, he vows to bring order back to Chinatown. Great performances everywhere. breathe-taking settings through-out movie, especially the scene between Rourke and Arianne(reporter having affair w/ rourke) overlooking Manhattan(priceless). I also pre-order the yotd DVD in July, not knowing the DVD format was just release in May. SWEET! also, as far as picture quality, yotd is one of the finer quality DVDs on market. (play it on your laptop..WOW)

3 out of 5 stars Whatever Happened to John Lone?.......2005-06-06

"Year of the Dragon" though consistently engaging is a highly uneven film. While it purports to be about the Chinese underworld I don't think I knew any more on the topic than before I watched this film. I attribute this to the script by director Michael Cimino and Oliver Stone which has more than it's share of bloated rhetoric. Mickey Rourke, not helped by the silver dye job, does the best he can with the dialogue he's forced to spew as Stanley White, returning Vietnam vet turned police captain who has a personal vendetta in cleaning up Chinatown that remains vague to me. Arianne, who plays the TV reporter whom Rourke beds, has to be one of the worst actresses this side of "Showgirls". The film is elevated by the performance of John Lone as Joey Tai, ruthlessly ambitious crimelord. Lone is so coolly suave that you wish that more of the film had dedicated itself to his character instead of Rourke's. I do admire Cimino as a director, however. He's from the old school of seventies filmmakers whose most flawed work is as interesting as more successfully commercial product. As a screenwriter that's another story.
