5 out of 5 stars Disney Obviously Loves Blu-ray and So do I.......2007-06-11

Holy cow! What a release! Even for those like me who have seen this movie a dozen times, Disney found all kinds of new ways to make the movie fresh again.

First off:

Awesome Picture - one of the best I've seen on Blu-ray and I have at least 20 in my collection.

Awesome Sound - The foundation of my house was shaking!

Really cool special features! My favorite was the choice to have pirate facts pop up as you watched the film, and some of the facts could be banked so that at the end of the film, a documentary (that you have created by banking the facts you are interested in) plays. I mean, getting to custon make your own documentary? Only on Blu-ray my friends.

My family and I had a great time watching this film and I highly recomend it!

5 out of 5 stars Can the pirates get any better?.......2007-06-02

WOW! This release on Blu-Ray is the best of the best. This is so awesome, why doesn't HD-DVD have releveant titles like this? They keep releasing movies from the 90's on that format, while Blu-Ray releases relevant titles by the hords (including this title). What is there to say? Pick this one up, it's stunning in both video and autio. GET THIS TITLE, if you don't have Blu-Ray yet, get Blu-Ray and GET THIS TITLE!

5 out of 5 stars Best HD movie i've seen!.......2007-05-27

Its the best HD movie i've seen... what have i compared it with?

Blu-Ray:
Superman Returns
Ice Age 2 Meltdown
The Prestige
Fifth element
silent hill
nacho libre
Xmen last stand
Crank
Happy Feet
Stranger than fiction
casino royale
atl
a night at the museum
rocky balboa

Just watched Pirates 3 today. So i can fairly say, Pirates 1 is by far the best of the trilogy. Not only is it the best of the 3, but the HD quality is at its best too.

i noticed no blemishes, no grains, no colors that were offset (even at dark scenes where those problems usually occur)... it was pretty flawless to me. Sound quality is great too! Besides animated movies, it's the best SHOW OFF HD MOVIE to show off to friends....

i've also seen King Kong HD DVD, which was also a great HD Movie... but i think Pirates 1 tops it.

its a MUST OWN Blu-Ray!

1 out of 5 stars Curse of the Black and Blu-ray.......2007-05-26

My bluray will not play this movie!
I just read this is because of the firmware!!??
Then the firmware should have been on the Pirates bluray! Or come with a firmware disk taped to it. This failure needlessly complicates an already hectic weekend.

5 out of 5 stars Top notch looking and sounding Blu-ray lives up to the potential of the format but you may need a firmware upgrade.......2007-05-26

Featuring a terrific looking transfer, the Blu-ray of "Pirates" looks darn near perfect. Colors are bold and accurate and this has one of the most film-like looks I've seen. All of the original extras have been ported over as well as a new one that is interactive where you can access bits of pirate lore and history as you watch the film.

You've probably already seen the film in its previous DVD incarnation so hopefully you know the plot already. The format itself wouldn't matter if this was a bad transfer (witness some of the SACD or DVD-A releases that actually didn't sound as good as the original vinyl albums or CDs and you'll have an idea as to how badly this could have turned out)luckily Disney has taken great pains to try and capture the depth, texture and warmth of the original film itself. While it isn't as big a difference as comparing a DVD to a VHS, it is a marked step up from the previous DVD release. While the DVD looked extremely good, the accuracy at capturing the detail here leaves the original DVD in the dust.

Disney has taken a huge step forward with this Blu-ray and the companion sequel to "Pirates" also released at the same time. You may want to make sure that your firmware is up to date, though, as I've heard reports of folks having some issues with some of their players if they haven't updated it recently. If you're just now taking the plunge into Blu-ray I would make this disc one of the first that you purchase as it allows the format to show its potential.

A heartwarming film that demonstrates how good, hard-working people can become homeless almost overnight, Pursuit of Happyness is a tour-de-force showcase for Will Smith, who convincingly portrays a down-and-out dad trying to better his family's life. Smith, who usually is cast in effortlessly boyish roles (Men in Black, Independence Day), is wonderful in the film--even in the scenes that shamelessly tug at viewers' heartstrings. Based on the true-life story of Chris Gardner, a San Francisco salesman forced at times to shelter his young son (played by Smith's adorable look-alike offspring Jaden Smith) in a men's room, there is little suspense to the film in terms of Chris' outcome. (His story and eventual success a successful and wealthy Chicago businessman was well-publicized on the newsmagazine show 20/20.) And let's face it, Hollywood's not too keen on making feel-good movies with unhappy endings. The beauty (and suspense, to a certain extent) of this film is in the way the story is told. Though he is constantly rushing around to get to appointments and pick up his child, things do not happen quickly for Chris. When he accepts an internship with a prestigious stock brokerage firm, there's a catch: The position is unpaid, suitable more for trust-fund children than single parents with no other source of income. In many scenes, the viewer panics along with Chris, wondering how he's going to feed his child. While Smith and his son, Jaden, share many tender moments together, Thandie Newton has the thankless role of playing Chris' shrill wife, who deserts her family early in the film. It's not a particularly challenging part for the talented actress, and her departure doesn't impact the storyline much at all. As for the movie's misspelled title, it's inspired from a scene in the film. (Seeing a mural drawn by the children at a daycare center, Chris points out to the proprietor that "happiness" is spelled incorrectly. She notes that it doesn't matter how the word is written--just that the kids have it.) With Pursuit of Happyness, Smith has come out of his safety zone and, in turn, ends up playing his most heroic role to date. --Jae-Ha Kim

Will Smith stars in the inspirational true story of Chris Gardner, a San Francisco salesman who's struggling to make ends meet. When his girlfriend Linda (Thandie Newton) walks out, Chris is left to raise their 5-year-old son Christopher (Jaden Smith) on his own. Chris' determination finally pays off when he lands an unpaid internship in a brutally competitive stockbroker-training program, where only one in twenty interns will make the cut. But without a salary, Chris and his son are evicted from their apartment and are forced to sleep on the street, in homeless shelters and even behind the locked doors of a metro station bathroom. With self- confidence and the love and trust of his son, Chris Gardner rises above his obstacles to become a Wall Street legend.

4 out of 5 stars Inspirational True Story About Overcoming Obstacles.......2007-06-23

If you have a vision/goal for yourself & your family and you work hard to realize those dreams, then you will succeed in life.

Mr. Gardner is a wonderful example of the typical person with the vision/goal of living the all American dream. Through much adversity he never gave up and went from being homeless to a successful stock broker.

4 out of 5 stars Smith finally breaks through into the elite of actors and gives us as all something cheer about..........2007-06-22

Will Smith carries this film on his very sturdy shoulders and proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that he has matured since his `Fresh Prince' days into a very fine actor. His performance is layered, structured and intelligent, but amidst all of that he still comes across natural and refreshing, never forced or mechanical. Every emotion runs through his blood effortlessly and full of believable conviction. I've always been a fan of Smith, but here he returns to the brilliance he possessed in `Ali', coupling his on screen fire with heart and soul that transcends the meaningless boundary's of comic relief but that which leaves a deep rooted sense of character and warmth. Smith disappears inside Christopher Gardener but he never loses himself, his charm and his commanding presence.

`The Pursuit of Happyness' tells the true life story of Christopher Gardener, a family man who gets wrapped up in the wrong pyramid scheme and ends up broke and homeless. His wife Linda, played by Thandie Newton, walks out on him he's left desolate and alone. The love for his son Christopher, played brilliantly by Smith's own son Jaden, is what keeps Gardener holding on in pursuit of a better life.

One thing that Christopher has going for him is potential. He's a smart man with ambition and determination and so when he sees an opportunity to rise above himself through an internship with a law-firm he takes it despite the fact of no pay and he uses it to better himself and his surroundings. Smith's wide range of emotions are what keeps this story compelling and entertaining, from his sadness and grief stricken situation to his cheerful demeanor he masquerades in for his sons sake to that emotional clap of relief as he realizes his dreams amidst a crowded sidewalk, Smith breaks down his own barriers and builds for himself a place alongside the acting giants of today.

With pros there must also exist cons, and those cons appear in a few different forms. The first form is that of co-star Thandie Newton who develops a bad habit of repelling the viewer. Her character, while unsympathetic in general, is overly unsympathetic not to mention a tad-bit annoying, and that's putting it nicely. Where's that girl I saw in `Crash' who stole the entire show from her co-stars, who electrified the screen and screamed "nominate me"? She's lost albeit in a mess of a character who could have been so much more but turned out so much worse than anticipated. The flow of the film is a bit choppy as well. Some parts flow by effortlessly while others drag on and even get a bit redundant. The director at times tries too hard to emphasize Gardeners destitute condition when that said condition is already made apparent enough for the average viewer.

That said, there is still a lot of good to remember when recalling this film, and Will Smith's brilliant performance is reason enough to watch it at least once. I also must mention Smith's young son Jaden who perfectly compliments his father's passion by effortlessly mastering his performance which is sympathetic, controlled and elegant, never over the top or exaggerated like it could have been. He comes across as poised as his father and as at home in his performance as an actor who's been doing this all his life. One day this young actor will reach the feats his father has, and with a beginning as strong as this one he may end up there sooner than later. This story is one to be heard, and told as beautifully as it is here makes it easy on the ears.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Movie!.......2007-06-21

This movie is great for those who have a lot of life experience under their belt. As a single parent, I particularly identified with the father (Will Smith) in this movie, but I know I wouldn't have "got it" and felt the emotions it evoked as deeply when I was a teenager or any time before I had kids. I'd recommend this movie to parents, especially single parents and those who have endured hardship or poverty.

5 out of 5 stars Hard to watch? Sure. Worth it? Absolutely!.......2007-06-20

Man, the Fresh Prince has come a long way. Here he simply shines as Chris Gardner, a down on his luck dad trying to make ends meet in San Francisco in the 80's. When Chris' wife leaves him, he is forced to take care of his son (played by Smith's real life son Jaden), all the while struggling to keep from going under financially. Gardner then lands a dream job as an intern for a major stockbroker firm, only to find out it is a non-paying position. He must come out on top in the program if he hopes to land a paying gig. Meanwhile, Chris and his son are forced to live on the streets.

This film is based on the true story of Chris Gardner and how he, quite literally, started at the bottom and worked his way up. This a classic story about not giving up and fighting for what you want. This is possibly Will Smith's strongest role to date, and his performance is exceptional. Smith brings Gardner's story to life. A story that is full of heartache, despair, darkness, and most importantly...hope. I'll admit this is a tough one to watch..especially for parents. One of the most heart-breaking scenes is when Chris and his son are forced to spend the night in a subway bathroom. As the movie goes on you will find yourself asking the question: How much can one man take? But if you stick around until the end you will be touched and inspired. Hard to watch? Sure. Worth it? Absolutely!

1 out of 5 stars Pursuit of something, anything, left the cinema empty-handed..........2007-06-20

Using the very last of my movie ticket present, I went and saw the worldwide acclaimed 'Pursuit Of Happyness'. So many rave reviews about how they were crying whilst watching it, how it's so inspirational, the acting is superb...
It's really just average. Average performances, tacky cliched 'Don't let anyone tell you what to do' quotes, crying from how sad the movie is? Please. And the acting - again, average.
I expected to be moved to another plane of existence, to be so touched by this movie that you leave the cinema feeling like a brand new person; a better one, from having seen something so beautiful. Instead, the experience was bland, somewhat like a television movie, funny in parts, just the same old everyday drama. So a guy called Chris is down on his luck. His wife hates him cause he can't provide enough money for her and his son. Chris studies hard to become a stockbroker and lo and behold - what do you think happens? This part of my sentence is where I fall asleep and roll my eyes. (Those who have seen the movie will get the joke).
Congratulations, the man had a hard life and got through it. Myself and others are glad for you. How is this different to every other 'down on his/her luck' story? Many people have chased their dreams, many haven't. And do know WHY many haven't? Because all the running around introducing ourselves to potential employers gets us nowhere, not like Chris who has the brains and knowledge to do what others can't. When you see his boss getting into the taxi, snobbing him off, probably forgetting him within the next two seconds and will never bother to ring him again until Chris shares a taxi with him; that's what a LOT of employers are like! And no matter how much you push your way into something, you know what? They will hire the best person. And whether or not you are the best person, not many firms have total access for applicants to chase after their potential boss and make themselves well acquainted, proving that they are indeed the right person for the job. They'll get every conversation after the initial interview over and done with in seconds flat, not waiting around to hear what you have to say. I don't think this movie is a very realistic view of how to go about your dreams. And just because one man managed to become a stockbroker and now owns his own business, doesn't mean that you can just follow this movie literally and think that because he did it, I can then acheive anything I want to in life. Sorry for the pessimism, but it's true. While his wife thought he was mad to want to join a stockbroking firm and compared it to wanting to be an astronaut, Chris had the smarts of mathematics within his mind. Now for someone who WASN'T good at maths, but just so happened to think stockbroking looked like a happy and healthy job, would they grasp the complex essays and multiple choice questions in an essay? Would they even understand the book they were given? The answer is a clear 'no'. So in reality, in the real world, you CAN strive for your dreams, but just make sure it's one you can actually do. DON'T listen to people who say you can do ANYTHING. Because you can't do ANYTHING. We're all different, made to do what we're born to do, whatever that is. We have limits. And while this fantasy storyline flies around that humans are invincible and can do whatever they want if they put their mind to it, it's simply not entirely true.
And as for getting a job? Bosses are like a Skilltester game. You know, the boxes with a whole bunch of toys inside them and the claw that you're suppose to grab them with? Yeah, they're the claw. And they'll pick out each toy, get them so far, and then drop them back into the pile of rejects. Every once in a while they'll pick out the best, the lucky one who goes on to have that happy life of nine to five splendour. Just cause you study, push your way forward and really, really want the job doesn't mean you'll get it just cause you 'believe you can'. All those others studied, some would have passed the test, but did they get the job? No.
"You want something, go get it, period." Who on Earth believes that? You want something bad enough and believe in it, you'll get it? No.
Boring movie. Just. Boring.

Jennifer Garner's lips grow more Angelina-esque every year. In the romantic comedy Catch and Release, Garner (Alias, 13 Going On 30) plays Gray Wheeler, a young woman whose fiance dies unexpectedly before the wedding, leaving Gray unable to afford her home--so she moves in with her fiance's best friends, Sam (Kevin Smith, director of Clerks and Dogma) and Dennis (Sam Jaeger, Lucky Number Slevin). But the presence of another old friend named Fritz (Timothy Olyphant, Deadwood) leads to the unveiling of a secret: Gray's fiance had a child with another woman. Catch and Release lacks the clear story structure that most romantic comedies are built on, but trades it for a richer sense of the ambiguities of human relationships. Garner, though lovely and personable, is a bit bland--fortunately, she's surrounded by actors with all kinds of edges, including Smith (who shows an unexpected and uncloying earnest side), Fiona Shaw (from the Harry Potter movies) as the fiance's grieving mother, and Juliette Lewis (Cape Fear), who demonstrates once again her powers as a fearless and surprising actress. Catch and Release is an uneven movie, with a remarkably elegant visual style that sometimes clashes with the workmanlike dialogue, but it can't be written off as the same old Hollywood claptrap. Though a happy ending is inevitable, the path it takes has some surprising turns and flashes of unexpected emotional depth.-- Bret Fetzer

2 out of 5 stars It has moments.......2007-06-23

A friend recommended this to me and I understand why he liked it. The movie is original in some ways. It shows guys grieving for friends. It shows the community of a small group of friends. It shows humor in very a real way in tragic situations.

With all that being said, the movie dragged for me. The humor is very understated and doesn't come very often. The romantic relationships are forced and very cliche in the story. None of the characters are all that likeable, although the acting is top notch for the most part.

The movie just didn't work for me.

5 out of 5 stars Warm and Wonderful.......2007-06-21

This was a wonderful story about love, loss, anger, remorse, forgiveness, and reconciliation.

Jennifer Garner's fiance dies right before their wedding. She finds out about a couple of huge secrets that he kept from her. She learns to deal with the secrets and their repercussions. She also learns to live, trust, and love again.

Fabulous movie! I would recommend seeing this movie at least once.

5 out of 5 stars I loved it!.......2007-06-20

The movie was one of those that you might rate a 4 when it's done, but as time goes by you connect a little more with the characters and realize that it was really a good story. The actors would good. I liked it.. I would watch it again for sure.

4 out of 5 stars Cute Chick Flick!!.......2007-06-11

Found this to be another cute chick flick that at the end you leave feeling good. Jennifer Garner is a delight. Sweet and gorgeous at the same time. One of the prettiest actresses out there. Very fresh!!! Plus her husband isn't hard to look at either!!!

A heartwarming story of mistaken identity and idealism, director Ivan Reitman (Ghostbusters) takes on the political establishment in this fresh, funny comedy. Kevin Kline (Sophie's Choice, A Fish Called Wanda) plays Dave Kovic, a sweet man with a big heart running an employment agency. Dave happens to be a dead ringer for the current president of the United States, and he hires himself out as an impersonator for parties and mall openings. When the real president has a stroke while in bed with an aide, his ambitious chief of staff (Frank Langella) decides to hold onto the White House by appealing to Dave's sense of patriotism and having him pose as the president. Soon, however, Dave is running the country in a way contrary to what the chief of staff would like, even as he finds himself falling in love with the unsuspecting first lady (Sigourney Weaver). The movie's unbridled optimism is its best asset, and it makes this a pleasant comedy worth seeing. --Robert Lane

Description

Just who runs this country anyway? For comedy fans, the answer is - Dave. Kevin Kline (A Fish Called Wanda, In & Out) and Sigourney Weaver (Working Girl, Ghostbusters) star in this box-office winner about an uncanny Presidential lookalike named Dave, who's recruited by the Secret Service to become a momentary stand-in for the President of the United States. However, things don't turn out exactly as planned and Dave finds himself continuing his masquerade as Chief Executive indefinitely. Ivan Reitman (Ghostbusters and 6 Days, 7 Nights) directs and supporting players Frank Langella, Ving Rhames, Ben Kingsley and Charles Grodin supply more reasons to stand up and cheer. Many real-life Washington politicos and pundits join the fun as Dave uses ordinary-guy savvy to deal with the extraordinary responsibilities of the Oval Office.

DAVE is a wonderful movie. Anyone who wants to see the tables turned on the crooked politicians in Washington must see this movie

5 out of 5 stars A feel-good, way-it-oughta-be, movie.......2007-05-14

"Dave" was a pleasant enough movie the first time I saw it, in 1993, with the good guys winning, and with superb acting performances by Kevin Kline, Sigourney Weaver, Frank Langella, Ben Kingsley, and particularly Ving Rhames and Kevin Dunn in supporting roles. In a very small role, Charles Grodin does his best work that I've seen him do, and has one of the outstanding lines: "Who DOES these books?" Langella is quite believable as the astute, scheming politico who has never been bested; Dunn develops his character's moral conscience as we watch him on screen; and Rhames balances perfectly his character's initial distrust of the faux-president with his growing admiration of--and loyalty to--the kind of integrity so many of us wish we could find in "the leader of the free world."

When I decided to see it a second time, I viewed it as a movie or literary critic would, and found that it held together structurally, it developed organically, and it balanced some pretty heavy duty themes with good humor and almost-perfect timing. We have nearly worn out the original VHS tape that we bought, watching it whenever we want a "feel-good" movie, especially after seeing or reading about too much national and international news. Each time I watch it, I see more complexity to the character development and to the plot intricacies (which at first seem to be pretty straight-forward but, upon reflection, are not quite so simple).

"Dave" grows on its audience, appealing initially because it does represent what so many Americans would really like our government to be like; but it invites repeated viewing because of its texture, its acting, and so many of its memorable lines. How often, for example, can you imagine laughing at, "I once caught a fish THIIIIIISSSS big!" In the context of this movie, however, it is funny repeatedly while contributing seriously to character development. And how touching is the simple statement near the end of the movie, "I woulda taken a bullet for you," spoken quietly though in turbulent surroundings.

Even the ending, sappy though it may seem to be, holds open a subtle promise for the future when it is viewed in the light of the early political career of the movie's Vice President. "Dave" has risen steadily to become one of my five or six favorite movies, with "8 1/2," "Inherit the Wind," "Rear Window," "Tootsie," and "Blazing Saddles." I heartily recommend it: for a good time, call "Dave." Really.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful movie.......2007-03-11

The stars in this movie do a great job it's like it's for real it's a movie a family could watch and thats something good

5 out of 5 stars Good fantasy fun.......2006-12-20

I disagree with the reviewer who said s/he was apprehensive about all the brief cameos of journalists. Maybe I'm just a news junkie, but I LOVED seeing all the brief clips of the usual pundits and broadcasters supposedly reporting on the events in the movie. It was hilarious! Overall, this film gets an A-, and is one of the funniest, most good-natured political satires I've ever seen.

5 out of 5 stars I "DAVE" do solemnly swear to uphold and defend.....................2006-10-30

Kevin Kline and Sigourney Weaver give outstanding performances in this film. They are a delight to watch. A very well written screenplay and a surprise that Hollywood would turn out something so wonderful given their usual depictions of politics in general. This is without a doubt my favorite film dealing with a political topic. The character of "DAVE" is so real and perfect for the oval office. He manages to turn around a corrupt government, balance the budget using down to earth every day person tactics and unites the country during his short term in office, as an imposter. He exposes those in high places who are trying to turn things to their own advantage, and brings a forgotten, unpopular Vice President to the fore front, to take the helm at a very crucial time for America. Many of us have often thought that the Presidency should be given to someone who is just a normal, every day American, without the wealth and prestige that is almost always associated with it. "DAVE" gives us that chance, if only fantasy. You will be surprised by every turn of this adventure. It is hilarious, dramatic, romantic and fun to watch. You'll find yourself wanting to go vote after you see this film. Highly recommended!!!!!!

Light years before political correctness--1983 to be exact--or his comeback in tame Disney comedies, Eddie Murphy was a charismatic, wonderfully offensive, egocentric 22-year-old black comedian known for crude celebrity impersonations and often shockingly frank diatribes on racial and sexual politics. Dressed in a skin-tight red leather suit and delivering endless streams of obscenities faster than Richard Pryor ever did, Murphy is captured in this raunchy HBO special (a filmed document of his Grammy-winning album, Eddie Murphy, Comedian) at his confident, swaggering, comedic peak--a posture that soon disappeared after a string of bland Hollywood comedies. Here, however, his energy and sheer virtuosity command complete control over the audience for 107 minutes, whether he's mocking personalities like Elvis, James Brown, and Stevie Wonder, or spinning long, gag-filled personal anecdotes about the ice-cream man or dysfunctional family barbecues. There's no apologizing for the immature stereotyping, blatant homophobia, and sexism (though Murphy did so several years later) that surface during the routine. But, then again, unlike his much nastier, one-sided concert film, Raw, no topic here is safe from Murphy's uproarious tongue-lashings--including the comedian himself. --Dave McCoy

What followed were some of the funniest, raunchiest, most quoted lines of comedy of my childhood. From the ice cream man to Aunt Bunny to G.I. This gorgeous adaptation of Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic children's story is well worth watching with the whole family. Produced for Canadian television, it's one of those rare productions that actually sticks to the book and even enhances it through first-rate performances and an excellent script. Set on bucolic Prince Edward Island in the late 19th century, Anne of Green Gables is the story of Anne Shirley, an imaginative and headstrong orphan. When brother and sister Marilla and Mathew Cuthbert decide to adopt an orphan boy to help Matthew work the farm, they are astonished when Anne arrives at the train station by mistake. "What use is she to us?" grumbles the gruff Marilla. "We might be of some use to her," answers Matthew, who has taken an instant liking to the talkative Anne. As Anne grows up, her adventures are both hilarious and moving. It's a delight to watch as she forms a friendship with the beautiful Diana and her admirer--the dashing Gilbert Blythe--then dyes her hair green, cracks a slate over Gilbert's head when he calls her "Carrots," and finds a sympathetic teacher who encourages her to attend college.

Richard Farnsworth is perfect as the shy and gentle bachelor Matthew, who confides to Anne that he never went courting because "I would have had to say something." Colleen Dewhurst delivers a nuanced and powerful performance as Marilla, a seemingly cold-hearted spinster whose no-nonsense exterior conceals a warm heart. And as Anne, Megan Follows strikes the perfect note, maturing from freckle-faced orphan to elegant and poised young woman. --Elisabeth Keating

5 out of 5 stars If you have a daughter--she NEEDS this DVD!.......2007-06-13

I grew up watching this movie, and read all of L.M. Montgomery's books, and now as an adult I wonder, "What happened to stuff like Anne of Green Gables?" Kids these days, especially girls, don't seem to have any wholesome entertainment that doesn't focus on becoming rich and famous or having the perfect body. If you have a daughter, or a niece, or you yourself just want a nice wholesome movie for a change... buy this movie, you will not be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Good movie.......2007-06-12

I watched this when I was little. Very nice, clean movie that keeps you very involved with the characters. Would recommend!

5 out of 5 stars The Cutest of Movies.......2007-06-10

This movie is so wonderful I love the characters they picked to play each of the characters. This is the best movie out of the trilogy the sequel being the second best because both follow the book. This movie had all of my family in tears at certain points and Gilbert Blithe was a definite favorite for us. The scenery is breathtaking and the way the love story plays out is very cute. I would highly recommend this movie as it is a very enrapturing movie filled with the simple, beautiful things in life. And how Anne " with an E " touches the hearts of so many people is so beautiful. It made me want to move to Prince Edward Island tomorrow to live somewhere like Green Gables. Anne of Green Gables has become one of my favorite movies as it sings to the heart of the hopeless romantic.

5 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful.......2007-06-07

This is one of the best adaptations I have ever seen. Sullivan does a great job of bring Avonlea to the screen and making smart choices about what needs to be changed while remaining true to the world Montgomery created.

The casting is perfect - major and minor characters alike are extremely talented. It's amazing to see how Megan Follows plays a 13 year old and a 16 year old, sometimes days apart, and is believable every time. Richard Farnesworth and Colleen Dewherst are magic.

The bonus features are also great - giving you the impression that getting this adaptation so perfect was more luck than craft on Sullivan's part (a perspective proven later when he destroys this "trilogy" with the joke that is The Continuing Story"), but provides an interesting commentary and details fans will really enjoy.

Everything about this film - the cast, the script, locations, costumes - works together. This is the Avonlea Anne fans have long loved.

Kid safety is an important, yet often difficult topic of discussion between parents and children. The Safe Side's "Safe Side Super-Chick" is a decidedly zany host who successfully combines slapstick humor with serious, practical safety tips for kids. "Safe Side Super-Chick" breaks the population down into three quickly discernable categories: "Safe Side Adults" that kids know well and can always trust to keep them safe, "Don't Knows" like the mail carrier or the lady at the park and "Sorta Knows" like a coach or a schoolmate's parent. As "Safe Side Super-Chick" interacts with "Don't Knows" and "Sorta Knows", she offers seven specific safety tips to keep kids safe and, with the help of real kids, details simple, concrete actions and phrases that empower kids in a variety of potentially dangerous situations. Best of all, the presentation is never scary, but always extremely funny--that means that kids ages 2 to 10 will actually enjoy learning about safety. Kudos to Julie Clark (creator of Baby Einstein) and John Walsh (host of America's Most Wanted) for creating a safety video that's highly entertaining, informative, and practical. --Tami Horiuchi

Description

A message from John Walsh: I'm the host of a television show that I wish wasn't needed. But it is. Thankfully, 38 missing children have been recovered by our work at "America's Most Wanted." In 1981, the lives of my wife Reve and I were changed forever. Our beautiful son Adam was abducted from a mall in a nice area of South Florida. Sadly, two weeks into the biggest search for a child ever in Florida, our son was found murdered. In my quest to find justice and fight back for victims, I lobbied Congress to change the laws and to change how police search for missing children. I'm proud to say that the movement I started is still going strong. There's a national organization dedicated to helping children (National Center for Missing and Exploited Children) and now this country and its media are beginning to understand that our children need to be informed about how to stay safe. In 1981 not much was known about child abduction and exploitation. Parents knew very little and, tragically, children knew even less. Today we're proud of the awareness that children have about the dangers that face them. Children see images everywhere of kidnappings and exploitation. We only need to think about what we've seen in the past year--pedophiles in the clergy, Internet predators, and others who are in positions to take advantage of children's trust in them--to know that kids are still being victimized at an alarming rate. I hope that's about to change. As a crime fighter and host of a popular TV program that has saved lives, I'm proud to be teaming up with a woman who knows how to teach children. Kids want to know what to do, and parents need to be prepared. Like me, Julie Clark is a parent who cares. She has a proven track record of teaching kids. Her passion and experience make this series of safety videos for children something that parents and kids will want to watch. Now parents and kids will do what I've been doing for more than 23 years--they'll fight back.

5 out of 5 stars Great Way to Teach Your Kids About Stranger Safety.......2007-06-15

We bought this on the recommendation of a friend, and we are very happy with this purchase. The video is really goofy and fun - perfect format to hold our kids' attention. It delivers the important stuff in a fun, repetitive way so it sticks in our kids' minds. They are now openly repeating the video, stating "Grandma is my Safe Side Adult" or "That man over there is a Don't Know." The actor in this video is really talented - I'm surprised she doesn't have her own show (maybe she does?) because she could give The Wiggles, etc. a run for their money.

5 out of 5 stars My son learned A LOT from this CD........2007-06-14

I noticed my son, who's 5, loved to talk to people wherever we would go anywhere. I felt that he had no awareness of the danger of strangers. I bought this DVD and WOW my son "got it" right away. He now asks if its ok to talk to anyone and guides his little sister to do the same. This DVD is a must have for safety reasons. It's fun too!

5 out of 5 stars Safety Simplified.......2007-06-13

I encourage families of children and teens of all ages to view this video. It provides excellent tips on how to stay safe. The safety concept in this video is clear for all ages to learn and become aware of his/her surroundings.

4 out of 5 stars My kid's like it.......2007-06-11

I think that this does a good job of warning kids about the dangers of the world without scaring them. I am glad that I got it for them because I really didn't know how to approach the subject, and they really have learned from it. It is also entertaining and they have watched it probably 10 times.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!!!!.......2007-06-02

I am a mother of two young sons and I am also a Child and Family mental health therapist. I am so impressed with this dvd. It covers all the safety issues in a way that is very appealing to kids. My five year old has watched it three times and we only received it yesterday! It's important for a child to want to watch this dvd and see it several times to really understand the concepts. He wants to show it to all his friends. Even my one year old was interested and danced to the theme song. I was impressed that it covers things that I have heard from the kids I work with such as kids thinking that they can just "punch and kick the bad guy" if someone approaches them, and covers what to do if people such as a child's coach or neighbor ("kinda know's")tries to get them to go somewhere with them. Also, kids are told to yell, "This is not my Mom (or Dad)!", if someone tries to grab them. This is so important because abductors can just tell bystanders that the child is having a tantrum if the child yells "no" or "stop" and carry them out. I wish this video were shown in schools so every child could see it. This product will save lives.
