First released in France, Luc Besson's Arthur and the Invisibles is a touching computer animated adventure that makes up in look and in character for what it lacks in narrative originality. As a direct hybrid of Excalibur and A Bug's Life, Arthur stars a heroic ten year-old, Arthur (Freddie Highmore), who draws a sword from a stone to fight a miniature battle in the garden before finding treasure valuable enough to save his grandfather's farm from purchase by developers. Arthur's grandfather, Archibald, having long ago discovered the miniscule world of Minimoys, garden gnome-like elves that lived in his yard, shrunk himself in order to hunt elusive rubies that were hidden in their evil Mecropolis, headed by Maltazard (David Bowie). Now Arthur must assist the benevolent Minimoy clan, ruled by The King (Robert De Niro) and Princess Selenia (Madonna), in challenging Maltazard for possession of the jewels. Shots taking the viewer down through grass blades into the microscopic, yet gigantic yard world readjust one's sense of size, as do scenes, for example, in which a small, elven Arthur fights mosquitoes with catapulted tomatoes. Meanwhile, live action scenes of Arthur's worried grandmother (Mia Farrow) provide respite from a completely computerized world. Bowie, as he did in Legend, steals the show, bringing to life his Darth Vader-like character who chose evil over good in a past adventure. Corny one-liners sometimes spoil the mood, but overall the film's thematic blend of fantasy and environmentalism, like Princess Mononoke, will delight children with its positive message. --Trinie Dalton

2 out of 5 stars Great Film, Bad DVD.......2007-06-11

When I origionally saw this film in the cinema, it was great! full of action and the jokes where quite witty.
Unfortunatly this dvd version has been censored to a point where quite a few of the action sequences have been cut out and the film just dosn't flow.
The film cuts from diferent scenes, missing out sections that leave the viewer quite puzzled about how the characters got to the point they are at.
I don't understand why they would censor an animated film that is rated PG anyway.
All in All if you can get your hands on the origional version its a must!
but for the time beeing I'd stay away from it, it kind of ruins the real fun the story has.

    5 out of 5 stars delightful.......2007-06-11

I have watched this movie three times, and each time find something new that I missed before. Great plot line, great actors-both real and voiced, and all in all a delightful family movie.

    5 out of 5 stars Adorable Film.......2007-06-03

In this great little flick, "Author," we quickly are drawn into the mode as Author's grandmother is about to lose her farm to developers and sees no help in sight since Grandpa has been missing for a long time.
Author listens to the stories that his grandmother reads to him, stories of adventures and little people that his grandfather discovered and helped. Fantacy or truth? Author feels they are true and goes on a search to find clues as to where his grandfather has gone knowing he certainly must have left to find the treasure of jewels that he knew his family would need.
It seems there is a land of tiny people living in Author's garden, a people called the Minimoys and Arthur must allow himself to be shrunk to enter this world, save his grandpa and bring the treasure home to save the farm. The adventure begins as we meet a quite charming and fiesty Princess, a kindly King and a nation of adorable little bitty people. As in any good movie there is always the 'evil one,' as is the case here and we meet Maltazard who has been holding Grandpa captive and is planning to destroy the little people. Can Arthur save the day?
This movie is cute a a button, going back and forth from normal to animated. It held all of our attention from the 8 year old to the 60 year old. It is fun, adventerous and has a happy ending. I think you will like this one.

    4 out of 5 stars COOL.......2007-05-23

Good unrealistic little people look asian. Unrealistic plot. What is arthur waiting for to kiss the pirncess?

    4 out of 5 stars Charming film.......2007-05-22

Invisibles is quality family entertainment. It's a fairy-tale that's one part live actors and one part animation, but it's not your standard Pixar fare. The animation is more like anime, and has the feel of a ps-2 game.

Freddie Highmore does a fine job again, as Arthur. You may remember him from Charlie and the Choc Factory, and from an obscure little gem called "Finding Neverland" (both with Johnny Depp).

There's enough quality voice-acting here to satisfy anybody, but David Bowie's sardonic performance is outstanding. And Mia Farrow is still so beautiful and has aged very gracefully. It was a pleasure to see her again.

Ancient curses, all-powerful monsters, shape-changing assassins, scantily-clad stewardesses, laser battles, huge explosions, a perfect woman, a malcontent hero--what more can you ask of a big-budget science fiction movie? Luc Besson's high-octane film incorporates presidents, rock stars, and cab drivers into its peculiar plot, traversing worlds and encountering some pretty wild aliens. Bruce Willis stars as a down-and-out cabbie who must win the love of Leeloo (Milla Jovovich) to save Earth from destruction by Jean-Baptiste Emmanuel Zorg (Gary Oldman) and a dark, unearthly force that makes Darth Vader look like an Ewok. --Geoff Riley

    3 out of 5 stars A change of heart.......2007-06-13

I first saw this film at the theater when it was first released. At the time, the slogan that went with it was "...go beyond Star Wars, go beyond Star Trek..."

Wow. That's a pretty bold statement. I had been a life long fan of both Star Trek and Star Wars as well us Luc Besson's previous work (Le Femme Nikita, and the masterful The Professional). I was really looking forward to this movie.

    And then I was disappointed.

The film is visually stunning (obviously borrowing heavily from Blade Runner), but the movie was MUCH different than either Star Trek or Star Wars.

First of all, the film was VERY campy. It made no attempts to deliver a serious or believable story. Most of the characters delivered their lines as if they were all taking part in one huge inside joke.

Some of the cinematography was done is such a way that I felt as though I were watching an '80s rock video.

The special effects, however, are probably the biggest redeeming qualities of this film. They are absolutely impeccable. The costumes and set designs were very good as well.

But this movie could never even hope to hold a candle to the Star Wars or Star Trek franchise. It was more of a comedy than anything else.

To be quite honest, after I saw the movie.....I hated it.

Then came the VHS release. With some trepidation, I decided to rent it and give it another chance. This time, I knew what to expect. I knew that I wasn't going "beyond Star Trek" or "beyond Star Wars". I was able to watch the film a second time with no preconceived notions of what it was going to be like.....

    .....and I actually ENJOYED it!

If taken for what it is (a sci-fi action-comedy), The Fifth Element is actually quite a well-crafted and executed little film. Just don't expect the film to deliver something better than what Star Wars or Star Trek has to offer.

I learned an important lesson from the marketing of this movie. It's best to go into a film without any ideas of what it will be like or what it SHOULD be like, despite what the advertisements may suggest.

All in all, I did buy a copy of the DVD for my collection and I do watch this movie from time to time. It's fun escapism, but Star Wars it's not.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Sci Fi Movies Ever.......2007-06-12

I would rank this movie up there with the top 10 greatest Sci Fi movies. Special effects...stupendous. Storyline...excellent. Casting, Acting, Costumes...all top notch. If you don't own this movie, you should purchase it NOW!!

5 out of 5 stars Thank you, French guy!.......2007-05-29

This is it, folks. An actual apex of film making, as only a French guy could bring.

And let me attest to this now: It's been BROUGHT!

LEON is probably my favorite movie of all time, but this movie just goes off in directions that no other film has gone before. I have now idea how this film can be so funny, so tragic, so inspiring, and so sad all at the same time, but it does, and it does it well.

Do you know what I'm most thankful for? That they didn't make a sequel. I (usually) really hate sequels, and a sequel to this would have blown. If you've seen Starship Troopers 2, then you know what I'm talking about.

So what would Marc Antony do? DUH! He'd drop Cleopatra like a small pox scab and run off with Mila Jovivic! (is that how you spell her name?)

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite movies.......2007-05-17

I love this movie, in fact I'm going to have to watch it again this week now that I have been reminded I have it. Oh yeah, superbit is pretty cool, but I bought the superbit version as a gift for my parents.

5 out of 5 stars Great action, great music and great comedy........2007-05-15

This baby will keep you from going to get the snacks.
Better hit the pause because you will not want to miss a single moment of this movie.

Luc Besson (The Fifth Element) made his American directorial debut with this stylized thriller about a French hit man (Jean Reno) who takes in an American girl (Natalie Portman) being pursued by a corrupt killer cop (Gary Oldman). Oldman is a little more unhinged than he should be, but there is something genuinely irresistible about the story line and the relationship between Reno and Portman. Rather than cave in to the cookie-cutter look and feel of American action pictures, Besson brings a bit of his glossy style from French hits La Femme Nikita and Subway to the production, and the results are refreshing even if the bullets and explosions are awfully familiar. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Most convincing love story ever........2007-06-22

"I know what I want to do with the rest of my life. I want to be an assassin. Like you." Spoken by a little [..]Natalie Portman, which becomes the earmark of my early attentions that this movie was more than your run of the mill movie. In fact, Natalie Portman may not have been the focus of this film but every ounce of her characterization of Mathilda stood out as owning this films reputation as an underground international hit. I can't give justice to the power she releases at the explosive ending with Leon that comes straight from some everyone-dies-Scorsese-mob-ending. Her invoking sobs are stomach clutching and her innate control is so fantastic it's frighteningly genius. It's almost impossible for me to discover the means for her to of have created such a complete character with such genuine passion when I consider the real life pressures such as the presence of people and running camera's absorbing every nuance of her countenance and paired against such dominating presence as Jean Reno and Gary Oldman no less! At film ending, I felt obligated beyond an audiance member, as if some member in an important film jury. Obligated to award that outstanding performance. Because in the movie business, audiences (unlike sports spectators who support having the best of athlets)do not reward the best of movie making. They rush to see movies like spider man 3, and oceans and reward them with unbelievable revenues that executives celebrate over. This under the radar revenge film with a bizarrly genius child actor was more than just a klatch of hollywood moments, it was a delicate lingo of sexual undertones. It was a 'becoming of age'-ness, and metamorphisized rebirth. This child was fantastic and worth droves of applause. She literally and metaphorically walks away from the hollywood glitch and glamour at some point. Away from the eye catching fire, and explosions. The throngs of police extra's, and of the cliche final showdown. She walks away as a child would, but with the aged spirit of a master actress, spliting the story in no better way for me into that scence of departure. One the one side is Leon, the revenge gun for hire story, and then the other of a precious girl coming of age under extraordinary circumstances which parallels the slave of Leon's rebirth from soulessness. "Is it always this hard?" She asks Leon with blood on her face. And as if questioning the validity of her own living, sweeps the blood with her hand and stares at it. "No." Exclaims Leon without emotion. Planted behind Leon's mirrory glasses at that moment is his rebirth.

    5 out of 5 stars The Professional.......2007-06-12

Excellent movie now a classic never get sick of watching, a must have for all movie buffs !

    5 out of 5 stars The Professional.......2007-06-05

This is a fantastic movie. Jean Reno is absolutely marvelous as the hit man who takes in an orphaned young girl (Natalie Portman) after a crooked DEA agent (Gary Oldman) kills off her entire family. Reno brings depth, sensitivity and a true comedic flair to the character. Natalie Portman is, naturally, adorable and shows true skill in the role. And Gary Oldman? He's just brilliant. The best - that is the foulest, the most despicable - villain there ever was. You've just got to see this movie! The Professional

4 out of 5 stars Unbelievably ridiculous but try not and be emotinally attached.......2007-06-03

Here is the rare film that combines a ridiculous storyline with a fabulous cast, great overacting, action, tenderness, angst and pathos and creates a winner you can't take your eyes, ears, heart or attention from. It will have you rooting for a serial killer who is teaching a 12-year-old the tricks of the trade. No kidding!

Jean Reno, who has probably never given a poor performance, is perfectly cast as an illiterate killer for hire. When Natalie Portman's family -- which lives in his building -- is murdered by bad cop-cocaine dealer Gary Oldman and crew, not yet teenager Portman survives and takes up housekeeping with the illiterate neighbor, a witness to the murders that is a full-time contractor to restaranteur Danny Aiello, playing the kind of gritty New York role that's made him famous.

You've probably already figured out this movie contains a lot of profanity, killing, bloodletting, foul play, and good guy-bad guy technique that's typical in this kind of urban drug-induced "police" drama. What you haven't figured out -- and what you won't until you see this film -- is the affectionate relationship it creates between older than her years but still youthful Portman and her new father figure and the way this relationship will addict you to this film.

Their relationship is about as connective as that torch you still carry for the high school sweetheart that got away. It sits beneath the surface eating up emotional bandwidth and retaining a place in your shattered psyche. The relationship between Portman and Reno (pronounced renn-Oh, not like the city in Nevada) will do the same thing to you.

I had no idea this movie, now 13 years of age, had all this going for it. It's a film that catches you unprepared. You want to see all the killing and be neutralized by its brutality. Yet this tender relationship between two down and out figures draws you in like a wet kitten at your front door whose mother was just run over by a car in the street. It melts your heart. Meanwhile, Gary Oldman is the [erfect foil, the epitome of evil. He gets his later in a memorable scene with our hero, Reno.

You have all this to look forward to as many times as you want by buying, renting, or borrowing this wonderful movie. My advice is to get on with it.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Movie.......2007-05-30

This version of Leon: The Professional is dead on perfect. The picture and audio quality is top notch. There are some nice bonus features thrown in too. Great acting by Reno, Portman, and Oldman. The extended scenes give you an even deeper look into Mathilda's training and her love for Leon. I highly recommend this DVD!

1999 may be remembered as the year of Joan of Arc: NBC created a miniseries in her honor, Carl Dreyer's long-lost The Passion of Joan of Arc was discovered in a mental hospital, and Facets re-released Jacques Rivette's Joan the Maid. Luc Besson rounds out the corpus with his stylistic and vaguely heretical grand-scale feature, The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc.

Besson (La Femme Nikita, The Fifth Element) challenges established notions about the Maid of Orleans as he creates a decidedly more human heroine than have previous biopics. The story line is the same--a young, illiterate peasant girl convinces the dauphin of France to give her an army, and she leads them to victory in Orleans, only to be burned at the stake for heresy--but Milla Jovovich, in the title role, is a woman possessed. Her influences are less than heavenly; as a child she witnesses the murder of her sister by the English, a death caused by the sister's giving her hiding place to young Joan, which causes an intense desire for revenge. Yes, God still speaks to Joan, but even this is undermined, as Dustin Hoffman, playing The Conscience, questions her motives.

Cinematically, The Messenger is stunning, with fantastical sequences of Joan in communication with higher powers. Yet the graphic violence (scenes include random decapitation and a dog gnawing on a body); the uneven accents, which make it difficult to tell who is fighting on which side; and the rewriting of lore may make this version of Joan of Arc appeal only to Besson fans. Jovovich is convincing, and while at times the film may drag (at times you wish they'd hurry up and burn her), it is a remarkable and insightful retelling of a well-known piece of history. --Jenny Brown

5 out of 5 stars Religously Based Thriller - Demonstrating Fear of Church.......2007-06-22

I found this movie EXCELLENT! I cannot comment on the historical religious facts - however, I was moved by Joan of Arc's passion to pursue her vision(s) from God to reclaim the Kings crown to France (From England).

Throughout her life, Joan of Arc was haunted by "visions from God" that lead her to believe that she had the religious power to force Englands Army to surrender territory in France rather than face the rath of God. Mila Jovovich does a spectacular job at playing an unbelievable role of a young lady leading a powerful army.

Dustin Hoffman is introduced as her conscience in the later half of the movie - and is haunting! In addition, I believe that this movie does a great job at demonstrating how religion was "Feared" during this period of history!

Strongly recommended as a very entertaining movie.

5 out of 5 stars History Coming to Life.......2007-05-19

For those who love history coming to life, this is the film for them. Milla Jovovich is fabulous in this role and portrays the passion and zeal of a true believer in the Middle Ages. The costumes and the props are superb and the battle scenes are so realistic that you feel that you are participating in real history in progress.

My favourite film of all times.

    3 out of 5 stars A medieval peplum film.......2006-11-22

This is not the best film by Besson. In fact it is in many ways incredibly naive and superficial, even in its desire to look and sound profound. Profundity is not only political gibberish diplomatic slang. And it is that kind of language that reduces the attitude of the French king to be and then king to opportunism. And it is that kind of language that reduces the attitude of bishop Cochon to servile non-commitment. And it is that kind of language that reduces the attitude of the English to vengeful cruelty. It is also very superficial to reduce simple people to blind believers of anything that sounds iffy, godlike and slightly insane, like a girl leading an army or hearing and listening to divine voices. But all that must please many simple minds indeed. It is a shame because the subject deserves a serious film, a serious approach. Shakespeare forgot to write this play. He could have written a masterpiece on the subject. Besson just writes an average action film, some kind of medieval peplum film.

1 out of 5 stars This film should be sent to the stake!.......2006-11-22

As a St. Jeanne d'Arc devotee, I have read quite a bit on my favorite Saint, as well as seen my share of movies. Some were well done, none have been definitive, and others are, well, like this one. I usually try to be a bit more intelligent, but the first word that comes to mind when I think of this particular version is CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Historically innacurate, spiritually unfaithful, this film stinks. It is downright heretical, portraying our beloved Jeanne as having made a pact with the devil. She is shown as a proud, haughty girl at odds with her Church. What a bunch of bull. The ONLY two bits of this film I appreciated were the attention given to her ring (given her by her brother), as well as the scene when she brings a child back to life (I am unaware of any other films on her that portray this true story). Other than these, it took a lot not to walk out of the theatre when I went to see it. In other words, BLAHHHHHHHH! Don't waste your time, money, or soul on such non-sense.

French director Luc Besson (The Fifth Element) broke the commercial taboo against female-driven action movies with this seminal, seductively slick film about a violent street punk (Anne Parillaud) trained to become a smooth, stylish assassin. Though it amounts, in the end, to little more than disposable pop, the film has a cohesiveness in style and tone--akin to the early James Bond films--that gives it a sense of integrity. Parillaud is compelling both as a wild child and chic-but-lethal pro (trained in good manners by none other than Jeanne Moreau). Tchéky Karyo is also good as the cop mentor who develops feelings for her. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars La Femme Nikita (Special Edition)..........2007-06-02

I am so torn between the original French Version and the American Remake. But, in the end, I must give the tip of my hat to the original French. An entertaining movie, all the way around!

    5 out of 5 stars Original version.......2007-05-12

This movie is the French and original version of the American equivalent. It is so much better though. Unique story, lots of action (violence...) and humor, but still very people oriented. You can't be unsensitive to any of the characters.

    5 out of 5 stars Femme Fatale.......2007-04-21

In the world where a woman can handle a gun and be as merciless and seemingly unemotional as any man, the anti- heroine named Nikita (Anne Parillaud in a performance of her life) is given a reprieve from a death sentence by government agents that want to use her as an undercover assassin.

Director Luc Besson made a movie that manages to keep a high level of energy and our interest - from the opening scene - a violent drugstore shootout until the very last moment.

Terrific cast include also Jean-Hughes Anglade (Queen Margot, Killing Zoe), Tcheky Karyo (Kiss of the Dragon, Addicted to Love 1997), Jeanne Moreau - the legend of the French cinema ("Jules and Jim", "Elevator to the Gallows", "Going Places"), and Jean Reno ("Leon", "Ronin")

Stylish, ultraviolent, cynical but strangely engrossing - "La Femme Nikita" is a must see for the fans of clever action movies. Don't bother with the American remake (Bridgett Fonda) or TV series with the same title - see only original.

    5 out of 5 stars Nikita.......2007-03-22

I missed out on this film for years believing that it would be feminists claptrap, a type of poor mans "Dirty Harry".

How wrong I was, cracking film, a must see!

3 out of 5 stars Fonda Did it Better.......2007-01-24

As much as I do not like the Fonda name, Fonda junior did this flick no shame. USA takes the day on the re-make! This one is alright if you can get past the very '80's feel and schtickie acting. Sex Pistols and Flock of Sea Gulls should have done the sound track, but they didn't.

5 out of 5 stars French Director Luc Besson's Definitive Sci-fi Cult Classic.......2002-12-08

Owing perhaps a little to the earlier and very influential 'The Road Warrior', Besson's film is a minor masterpiece in its own right. Despite a few apparent flaws and an ending that is a little too happy, Besson and the film's star Pierre Jolivet have crafted a unique view of one person's survival in a brutal post-apocalyptic world.

'Le Dernier Combat' presents a believably dead world where a few humans struggle to survive and even fewer retain a sense of humanity. The director fills the movie with striking imagery that grabs your attention and doesn't ever let go. At one point during a rainstorm it begins to downpour fish; later during another rainstorm two of the film's characters get caught in a hailstorm of rocks! Scenes such as the very unusual opening shot, Jolivet drowning his sorrows with several bottles of liquor, his escape on a makeshift glider and many others never leave the memory once viewed. My personal favorite: two of the characters share a bottle of wine at dinner and, as is the civilized custom, each takes a sip from their glass and nod approvingly; cut immediately to an empty wine bottle balanced on a pedestal that someone is using as a target to hone their skills with a sword. It provides a brilliant parallel between the two types of people struggling against each other here.

What sets 'Le Dernier Combat' apart from others in the post-apocalyptic film genre is the fact that there is no dialogue spoken at all. Contrary to the criticism that it is a novelty, instead the absence of dialogue draws you into the movie, helping you become intimately connected to the survivors and sharing their experiences as if they were your own. Moments of suspense, despair, isolation, melancholy, elation, defeat and great joy are all conveyed superbly by the cast without the benefit of speaking. There is a singular moment where two of the characters say "Hello" to one another with the aid of what I believe is helium, but beyond that you won't hear a word spoken in this film.

Most deserving of it's cult status, the movie is best seen on the big screen due to it's being filmed in CineScope. The DVD release from Columbia Tristar is presented in widescreen and it is an absolutely clean and error free copy that will please any fan of 'Le Dernier Combat'. Though Luc Besson has had many other film successes since this was released in 1983 this one gets my vote for his best.

4 out of 5 stars Unique science fiction.......2001-11-16

This film, Luc Besson's first, is a fascinating work: originally released in 1983, it's black and white, and with almost no dialogue until close to the end of the film. In the near future, buildings are mere rubble, and the few people who are left (mostly) cannot speak. The lead male actor, Pierre Jolivet, who also co-wrote the script, wanders around searching for--something, anything that will let him connect to what remains of humanity.

While some may say this is a pointless exercise, I disagree. What would you do given those circumstances? The obvious retort to that question is, Yes, I understand, but why make that into a film? The answer: because it DOES capture the imagination of the viewer. Close to the end of the film, Jolivet finds more than he had dared to think possible. And you know this is true because you can feel, through his gestures and actions, through the course of the film, what he feels, where his head is. And where his heart is. Those he meets, too, are looking for the answer to--why are we still alive? What are we doing here, anyway? And when one of them finds another, Who are you? And who am I to you?

The translation of the film is The Last Battle--to discover these who's and why's. What these survivors are fighting is the easy but ultimately fatal way out of becoming as desolate, as isolated as a single piece of rubble each of them roams around in.

I won't give anything away about the ending, but let's say that, cliched as it sounds, hope springs eternal. The manner in which this message is conveyed is far from cliched. It's a great ending to a captivating film.

5 out of 5 stars Luc Besson's first and one of his best.......2001-07-06

"Le Dernier Combat" takes place in a grim post-apocalyptic future and is Luc Besson's first feature. Even though it won a lot of praise from critics, it has rarely if ever been available in the U.S. If you like Besson, read the history of this outstanding film and buy it. (Columbia will also be releasing a new edition of "Subway.")
