The SD500's 7.1 megapixel CCD (the highest resolution in the Digital ELPH line) delivers images with unprecedented detail. Meanwhile, the powerful 3x optical zoom provides plenty of close-up excitement with a focal length equivalent to 37 to 111 millimeters in a 35-millimeter film camera. The camera's stylish new perpetual curve design -- a first in digital cameras -- fits your hands perfectly, and though its body is superbly slim, the SD500 has an oversized two-inch LCD screen that makes for easy framing and playback.

Designed to improve processing speed and image quality, the SD500's DIGIC II processor provides markedly faster camera startup, auto-focus and playback. Canon has added nine special scene modes to help you take the best pictures in various situations. big step up for underwater pictures.......2007-06-18

searched for weeks for appropriate camera. settled for the canon sd500 when came available locally as never turned on display model at local office supply store. what a great camera. forget all the professional comments about picture edges blurring, color reproduction ablity,etc...this is an excellent, easy to use camera with excellent video capability. it takes excellent regular pictures and videos, but really shines when combined with its underwater casing that worked flawlessly. the clarity of the pictures is easily 200% improved and the ability to take videos that show the fish in motion was incredible. we had another family with us at st. martin and they are buying an sd500 as soon as possible. what a step above any camera i have owned, and the people who market and sell disposable underwater cameras should be run out of business.

I bought this model when they came out.
The best camera I have.
No longer use my camcorder... this will do just fine for DVD or web view.

Don't even hesitate to select this sd-500 model.
You will find the pictures amazingly sharp.
What more can you ask for a small wonder like this?

Great Camera.......2007-04-13

This is a very good camera and very easy to use. I have a Nikon D70 and this thing takes night pictures better than my Nikon (I am not a pro hence I may not knwo all my settings). This is also good to capture video, its more compact than your video camera and when you check in, you do not have to take it out like a video camera.

Solid, very decent camera.......2007-03-01

I purchased this camera a little over a year ago. It is a solid and pretty well-built camera, compared to a CanonA530 that I also own. The SD500 is more expensive and of higher quality than the A530, as would be expected. The A530 is actually lighter than the SD500, although bulkier.

PROS:
The pictures taken by the SD500 are of excellent quality, and there are options to change the quality and size of the pictures taken to maximize memory card space.
Macro is excellent.
Not extremely heavy, and very portable; sleek design.
Overall, a very fine camera.

CONS:
Not many manual controls.
It has a bit of a delay between when you press the shutter button and when the picture actually is taken, which makes photographing moving objects difficult.
Not very good in low-light situations without flash. It has to be pretty bright to take a really sharp picture without the flash.

I'm not sure if many people would notice this though - I am very picky about sharpness and clarity in my pictures, more so than most people. If you are buying this camera simply to take pictures of friends and loved ones and not for serious photography, I highly recommend this camera.

Note: Repair for the camera is quite expensive. I'm sure this is the case with most cameras, though. [...].

It has good resolution, good colors, good Macro mode... its all you need to go a trip...
