Amazon.com Product Description

The Nikon Coolpix 4600 digital camera features a 4-megapixel CCD, a 3x optical zoom through a high-quality Zoom-Nikkor lens, and long battery life using convenient AA-size batteries. Plus, with Nikon's exclusive In-Camera Red-Eye Fix, red eyes may be a thing of the past. Nikon's renowned In-Camera Red-Eye Fix technology automatically detects and corrects red eyes in most typical situations without the need to press buttons or select and highlight the eyes in playback.

The Nikon Coolpix 4600's In-Camera Red-Eye Fix
The Nikon Coolpix 4600's In-Camera Red-Eye Fix technology automatically detects and corrects red eyes in most typical situations.
Nikon's exclusive new D-Lighting feature is another new addition that can turn throwaway shots into frame-able memories. The D-Lighting feature can be selected in Playback mode, automatically compensating for insufficient flash or excessive back lighting in order to obtain balanced exposure throughout the frame. The Coolpix 4600 is also equipped with Blur Warning, another feature unique to Nikon, which alerts the user when a shot is compromised by camera or hand shake, allowing another shot to be taken before leaving the scene.

The Coolpix 4600 is also phenomenally easy to use. In fact, it's been designed to appeal not only to beginners of all ages, but also to people who've never even considered buying a digital camera before. With a redesigned graphical user interface (GUI) that lets the user navigate functions by either menu item list or icon, it enables the beginner to find the right mode at the right moment to achieve the best results, time after time. Furthermore, with a handy new Help button that displays a description for each selected function on the main menu, the process has been made easier than ever before.

The Nikon Coolpix 4600's D-Lighting
The 4600's D-Lighting feature allows in-camera compensation for uneven lighting.
The camera also features a large, bright 1.8-inch LCD screen, making it easy to compose shots and view recorded images at any time. It's been designed to consume much less power, making it possible to take almost twice as many images when using regular AA alkaline batteries.

Like its predecessors, the Coolpix 4600 also features Scene Modes, which allow the camera to adjust to the most typical shooting environments--Sunset, Fireworks, Indoor, Portrait, etc.--with the turn of a dial. The Coolpix 4600 and 5600 also feature an entirely new Scene Mode, Underwater Mode, which produces more satisfying, true-to-life colors when using the optional WP-CP3 waterproof case (case not included--must be purchased separately) to shoot scenes while snorkeling or scuba diving to a depth of up to 130 feet. This exciting new addition increases the number of Scene Modes to 16.

Creative snap-shooters have the option of five Color Options, including sepia tone, black-and-white, and even cyanotype, to change the entire look and feel of a shot. The 4600 also has 14MB of internal memory, allowing images to be recorded without additional memory media.

The Coolpix 4600 also makes it easy to capture action in an expressive manner with movie-shooting capabilities. It offers a choice of three simplified Movie Modes--TV, Small, and Smaller. (Movies are recorded without sound.) It can also be easily connected to a TV through the included video cable, to share the fun with friends and family.

The Nikon Coolpix 4600 digital camera makes the entire digital process more convenient. Its PictBridge compatibility makes it possible to print directly to a printer without the need for a PC. For those who enjoy organizing and sharing their photographs on a computer, Nikon Coolpix cameras ship with Nikon's proprietary PictureProject software, a user-friendly photo-management software designed expressly for use by Nikon Coolpix photographers, that offers a broad selection of cataloguing, editing, and sharing functions. This software package is aimed at providing a central location that is simple, intuitive, and seamless for Coolpix digital photographers.

3 out of 5 stars had it's fair share of life... .......2007-05-26

I got this camera as a Christmas present back in 2005, I believe. First... to respond to people complaining about how long the flash takes after you take a picture; After you take the picture, push the "playback" button and it shortens the time dramatically for the flash to re-load, and it goes straight to the picture. Also, BUY RE-CHARGEABLE batteries. For those who think simple AA batteries are going to last are just plain silly. It doesn't take that much common sense to realize that is all it takes. And that goes for MOST digital camera's. Just think of how much power these little machine's are using!

I really, really enjoyed my camera while it lasted. However, after the first time I ever dropped it (about 5 months after having it), it was never the same. I dropped it as the lens was fully zoomed out, and the "flaps" that cover the lens broke off, and the outer lens was cracked. Thankfully, it was put back together. Although the "flaps" were gone, it still worked fine. It just made funny noises when it was on. Many of the pictures I took with this camera came out very professional looking, and I was very pleased. I took it everywhere with me, and I loved it while it lasted. After a couple more drops, the battery cover will not go back down all the way- even tho it can still turn on, the strap loop has broken off, the area around my zoom button is cracked, and the entire camera won't go back together fully.

However, after all of this trauma.. it still held up! It was just earlier this year, when I brought it to Florida with me that it reached it's final days. I was hiking, and taking pictures as I went along, and all of a sudden, I took a picture and there were extreme bright, white lines across the picture. It looked like a very over exposed picture, like I had mistakingly put it on the wrong setting. Unfortunately, there was no fixing this. :( I have figured that something has been knocked off balance after being dropped so much, and it finally stopped working at it's full potential. Ironically enough, I can still take pictures inside with the flash, and get decent pictures. With a little bit of help from paintshop or photoshop, I have been lucky enough to fix some pictures.

At this point, the camera is absolutely useless. It saddens me because I had a lot of great luck with this camera. As a photographer, I couldn't complain about the way my pictures came out. It really depends on how you take them and if you can work the camera right. The settings and menu are pretty easy to navigate, the buttons are in the right spots (for me at least), and I could hold this camera in my hand for hours and it'd never get uncomfortable.

The Pro's:
- when the vivid color option is used, the camera delivers some beautiful, vibrant colors. Especially blues!!
-decent size LCD screen
-easy to use buttons and menu
-good quality pictures when put on the right settings
-comfortable fit in your hand, or jeans pocket

The Con's:
-cheap, plasticy feel to the camera. Especially with no batteries in it!
-the strap loop was the cheapest thing on the camera
-very, very bright flash which made it hard to get pictures the first time around. by the 3rd flash (red-eye reduction flash), people would move or squint, etc...
-flimsy "flap" that covered the lens, could be improved because it broke off instantly when I first dropped it.

I'd recommend this camera to anyone who needs a simple, easy to use camera. Mine didn't last as long as I wish it would have, but it was fun while it did. I wish it were $72 when I wanted to buy it!! If you do buy it, just be sure to take care of it... try not to drop it because it will never be the same if you do!!

2 out of 5 stars Nice try, but not even close to what a camrea should be.......2007-05-19

This camera has plenty of user friendly features and a pretty simple and intuitive interface and takes a descent quality picture. Thats where the fun ends. The flash takes numerous seconds to recharge which can be quite annoying if your trying to catch something or if you don't have 15-30 seconds to wait around after each shot. The Battery life is 2-3 uses when using the flash which is just nuts, you need to keep a 12 pack of AA's handy if you shoot with this camera. I've also on three occasions taken a large number of photographs only to find they were not there when I went to offload them from the memory card. The camera would act like it was taking the shot, even to the point where it would warn of blurry shots and then the photos were just nowhere to be found. look elsewhere for a better camera

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the trouble........2007-05-05

1. Flash lag-horrible.
2. Had problems with the settings button sticking- or not moving at all.
3. Battery life-non existant. Could have bought a really nice camera with the money I spent in batteries for this one.
4. Picture quality-decent, not true to actual colors.
5. There are better cameras out there!

5 out of 5 stars Just amazing.......2007-02-21

This camera was the best "little" camera I have ever owned.
It is so amazing.
It takes fantastic pictures and it is cheap.

3 out of 5 stars Hey, read this one: Reviewers are ignorant!.......2007-02-05

I was given this camera as a gift after my baby was born. I quickly upgraded to the 5600 because it had a microphone so I'd get sound when recording videos. It seems the 4600 is pretty much a dumbed down 5600 (and a slightly smaller pixel size -- but who cares? I never print larger than 4x6, so I always use a reduced image size). BTW, My parents have the 3600 which does have video with sound.

ALL Point-And-Shoot cameras have the following difficulties:

* Shutter delay after you take a picture (you have to wait while the image is read from the CCD, processed, and saved to memory)
* Quickly drains battery power if you use the flash and have the LCD screen on the brightest setting (so don't do it! I hardly use the flash and leave the LCD screen at half brightness level).
* you should always use rechargeable batteries with digital cameras

So why buy one over another? Some have slightly better delays, but more importantly look out for consistent problems, e.g., some Canon PowerShot's seem to have a problem with the lens shutter sticking.

I've had my 5600 for over a year now and everything has been great. However, it has succumbed to a problem that a few other consumers have mentioned, it powers on and takes one picture, and only one picture. Then you have to cycle power. I'm in the process of either getting another 5600 or some other cheap (~$100) camera with video+audio.

Don't let the general complaints I itemized above trouble you -- the people that make them are ignorant of how a digital camera works, don't bother listening to a word they say. If you want a really fast camera go for a SLR (or go film!), but it'll cost you... If you want a cheap camera, then buy a cheap camera (like this one or better, the 5600), but don't complain about it having a slow response time, or the pictures being blurry (learn how to stand still, i.e., stop drinking coffee and smoking dope).

End of rant.

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre Digital Camera.......2007-01-20

I've had this camera for about a year. I normally shoot with a 35mm SLR, but purchased this camera for informal, point-and-shoot gatherings and occasions when I didn't want to hassle with a large camera.

Benefits:
1. It's extremely small and handy to carry around in your pocket or purse for birthday parties and outings.
2. It's durable and has survived repeated droppings.
3. The pictures are sharp and crisp when properly focused.

Drawbacks:
1. The flash is blindingly bright. Whenever you use it, prepare for your subjects to look like they've got a 2,000-watt white spotlight shining on them like crime scene photographs, and the background will fade to nearly black. When used in indoor settings like restaurants, the brightness of the flash is just ridiculous. Think "mug shot."
2. Camera shake/blur. When the flash is not in use and you're indoors, it's very difficult to get a clear shot with this camera. The problem with the flash has led me to try to avoid using it altogether so that I can get better color and even light, which means I've had a problem with camera shake/blur in low-light conditions. For example, with the flash turned off it takes multiple attempts to get a blur-free shot in my living room, even in the middle of the day with the window blinds open.
4. The removeable battery. You have to take the battery out of the camera to charge it, by inserting it in the battery charger that is provided. This seems like an unnecessary extra step to me. Why not just design it so that you can plug the charger directly into the camera like other digital point-and-shoots?

For casual photographer who will be shooting mostly outdoors and desires a very portable, durable camera, this camera will work for you.

But if you will be shooting mainly indoors or with flash, avoid this camera.

I recommend the Kodak EasyShare series as a good alternative. I don't own one, but I've been impressed with the quality of low-light pictures (indoors) that these cameras produce.

5 out of 5 stars Nikon coolpix 4200.......2006-11-11

Very nice camera for the price. My place of employment bought one a couple years back for almost $400. Now their down to $119. Takes very nice close ups. Easy to use. Very happy with it.

5 out of 5 stars great camera! =).......2006-08-08

i love this camera! i have had it for a year or so. perfect size, great picture quality, very easy to use and durable (i dropped it once or twice before). great battery life too! i charge it maybe once every other week, but it's probably because i don't use this camera too often. highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Nice little camera.......2006-08-06

Found this camera on closeout at Sears new for 86.00, am pleased with the quality and functions, 4 mp is plenty for your average user, red eye works good. I was uncertain about the rechargable battery, It's always been easier to slip in a couple extra AA's when needed but we'll see. Some of these batteries have been recalled so check it out on the Nikon website.
The screen size could be a bit bigger, but is fine for me. If you have poor eyesite, go with a bigger screen.
All in all I like this camera and would recommend it highly.

1 out of 5 stars STAY AWAY FROM THIS CAMERA!.......2006-02-20

The title is a bit dramatic, but it is mostly true. I purchased this camera because of its size and value and was pretty much disappointed on all accounts. There are a number of problems with this camera.
1. The knob to change settings is very sensitive and if you dont check every time, you may not be in the right mode. Just putting it in the case changed my settings frequently.
2. The lag between pressing the shutter button and when it takes a photo is ridiculous. I have a 3 year old, and this camera just isnt good for action or spontaneous shots. It's like old-time photos where you had to sit there completely still for a minute or two for the photo to take...
3. The lag between photo shots is even worse, regardless of the size of your memory. There is no way you can take more than one ACCURATE shot of good quality in 20 seconds. I was truly disappointed and upset with this problem in particular.
4. Battery life. The camera uses 2AA batteries which under normal circumstances, should last several months at least. This camera sucks the life out of those batteries. It might have something to do with the sensitive knob being shifted, but regardless, I was having to change batteries whenever I decided to use the camera because the batteries were always low or dead.
The problem is that the camera seemed fine at first, and within a month, began having those issues.
Nikon's newer brand of cameras seem to have dealt with these issues, so you might be better off trying a newer model.

4 out of 5 stars Samsung v50 review -.......2005-04-23

I have had the v50 for a few months now, and find it very nice. In fact with 2 improvements, it would be almost perfect.

The Good:
- takes good pictures
- takes good video (30fps, 640x480). I have not found a limit in recording time, and have gotten rid of my video camera.
- easy to use and set new modes.
- can set to take 3 photos in about a second.
- comes with a rechargable battery that lasts a long time. I went on a 3 day ski trip with my family, taking all the video and pictures I could, without recharging.
- If the battery does run low, you can pop in normal alkalines.
- Uses low cost sd memory (or mmc, or memory stick)

Less than perfect:
- Unless you pre-focus (buy pushing down half way on the shutter) the shutter delay is roughly 1-2 seconds. Even pre-focus there is roughly 400mS delay (I use the 3 shot mode for action).
- Once you start taking a video, you can not zoom in or out. You must stop and start a new video to change the zoom. I haven't found this a problem, as I rarely shoot one scene for more than a min. or 2.

Summary: A good camera for the money, with lots of good features.

Update: after over a thousand pictures I would like to add these comments:
1) It seems that all digital cameras have trouble in low light, without a flash. This camera is no exception.
2) The video camera is good, but not as good as a "real" video camera. The one thing I don't like is that once you start a video clip, the zoom can not change. This is o.k., since most of my clips are short, but there are times when it would be nice.
3) I still like it a lot. One of the best features is that the battery is large (for a digital camera) and it takes a lot of photos on one charge.

5 out of 5 stars Sold on Samsung in general, LOVE the V50.......2005-03-25

I purchased my first Samsung camera about 6 years ago. It was an auto-zoom 35mm and it had so many features I couldn't even use them all. Everyone raved about the pictures I took. I am convinced it is the Schneider lenses Samsung uses. I wore that camera out and replaced it with the same model with a greater zoom ratio.
When I decided it was time to invest in a digital, there was no question of the brand, only the model. I chose the V50 (it had just been introduced) and I am still getting raves about my photos. Again, I am convinced it is the Schneider lens, but the camera is easy to use. My son loves taking "movies."
I will never purchase another brand--my camcorder is also Samsung.

5 out of 5 stars As easy or as complex as you want........2005-02-15

I bought mine a month ago, and it is a very good acquisition. I already had a 2.0 MP camera and i wanted to upgrade for more detail and the Samsung was the best on its price range. The closest competition came from Sony (Powershot DSCP10, 5.0 Mp) and the Canon A50. Both the Sony and the Canon had smaller screens. And the Sony screen was fixed.

The fun thing is that you could use the V50 as an ordinary pocket camera. Don't open the screen, just select the AUTO mode, look through the viewfinder and press the shutter button.

Or... you could try more complex settings: go into the ASM mode and play with the shutter speed (from 1/2000 to 15 seconds), the focus aperture and the "film" ISO settings.

Night shots will require a tripod, unless you want some "artistic", blurred photos. I've taken some nice pictures of the stars with the maximum exposure time and the focus manually set to infinity.

Pictures taken under daylight conditions look crisp, colorful and reallistic.

Videos are rather good at 640 x 480, but the audio is just average quality. However it can replace your ordinary camcorder if you don't want to carry around too much stuff and only want to record short videos.

5 out of 5 stars Great Digital Camera.......2004-11-05

This is a great digital camera. The price for it is amazing it being a 5 mp camera with a gazillion features. I recommend this camera to anyone the pictures come out beautiful and perfect and for moms with young ones that just like to jump and not pose for pics its a great camera it has a feature that you put in children mode and even if they are moving it captures the moment perfectly. I was looking for a camera that took quick pictures without distortion and I found the perfect one. The battery life on it is amazing, I go days without charging the lithium battery that comes with it and believe me I use it n use n use it. It takes great movies and for how long you want em depending of the memory card space you have of course. So just get this with a 512 sd card and you are set to go.

4 out of 5 stars good camera.......2004-10-12

the price is reasonable, this camera has some interesting features like aperture priority, speed priority and manual modes, brackening, and exposure lock, manual focus, two slots ( SD and memmory stick duo). cons: it does not have a volume control when reproducing MPEG 4 videos, does not have flash level control and burst feature.

The price VS benefits offer a good result, good display with rotation

1 out of 5 stars Malfunctioned Soon After Purchase.......2007-01-11

After using the camera for about 1 month, it stopped working. It's completely dead. The bigger problem is that there will not be another camera in stock for 2 months!!
Another family member has the Coolpix 4100 and we feel the 4600 is inferior to that model.

3 out of 5 stars Nikon Camera.......2007-01-09

I thoroughly enjoy using this nikon camera. I tend to drop things sometimes and the one part came out slightly when I dropped it. This does not affect the quality or use of the camera it just looks slightly broken.

5 out of 5 stars perfect for teens.......2007-01-04

This camera is easy to use and a perfect camera for my teen daughter.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Deal on the Solid Little Camera.......2006-11-04

I bought this Nikon Coopix 4600 reconditioned camera as a little gift for someone who otherwise wouldn't have a digital camera. She was delighted. Everything works as advertised and it is an easy to use and easy to learn camera. She couldn't be happier.
