Amazon.com Product Description
With the Kodak EasyShare DX6490, you can get ultra-close to your subject with its 10x optical zoom. Fully loaded with advanced features, the EasyShare DX6490 also offers a 4-megapixel resolution, extra-large 2.2-inch LCD, and a mix of automatic and manual controls.

Optics and Resolution
Thanks to the Schneider-Kreuznach Variogon optics and Kodak's intelligent color science image processing chip, the EasyShare DX6490 delivers in-depth detail and stunning colors. The DX6490 features a 4-megapixel resolution for 2304 x 1728 pixel images for photo-quality 11 x 14 enlargements. Other resolution modes include 1656 x 1242, 1200 x 900, and 640 x 480. The 10x ultra-zoom lens is equivalent to a 38-380mm lens in 35mm photography. With the 3x advanced digital zoom, you can achieve a total 30x zoom.

The DX6490 introduces the new Kodak Color Science Image Processing Chip, which instantly analyzes your image each time you press the shutter. The result is sharp, consistent, lifelike colors that jump off the page.

Movie Mode
In addition to capturing still images, the EasyShare DX6490 can also shoot 320 x 240 pixel video with sound at 20 frames per second. Your video length is limited only by the size of your memory card. Note that the optical zoom cannot be used while shooting video.

More Features
Review your photos using the 2.2-inch high-resolution indoor/outdoor LCD screen on the back of the DX6490, which enables you to see your images even in direct sunlight. The camera also includes a high-resolution electronic viewfinder that displays images just as the camera sees them. You can view all menus and settings directly via the viewfinder.

The DX6490 makes it easy to snap photos in automatic mode, but it also offers a multitude of manual controls. The manual control dial lets you adjust aperture, exposure compensation, ISO equivalents (80 to 800), focus-zone format, and exposure metering. For automatic shooting, the DX6490 includes several scene modes, including night, sport (captures action without blurring), landscape (ensures maximum sharpness for distant scenes), portrait, and close-up modes.

The Share button on the back of the EasyShare DX6490 enables you to tag pictures right on the camera for automatic printing or e-mailing, after transferring to your PC. You can even store up to 32 e-mail addresses in the camera.

Other features include:

Included Camera Dock 6000
The EasyShare DX6490 includes the Kodak EasyShare Dock 6000, which features a USB port for fast and easy transfer of pictures from camera to computer as well as a two-position tilt feature for improved viewing of images from the camera's LCD. It also comes with a rechargeable battery pack, and the Kodak DX6490 can be stored in the dock any time so that it will always be charged and ready to go.

The optional Printer Dock 6000 adds the ability to print 4-by-6-inch photos directly from your camera. You can also hook it up to your TV for a slide-show presentation.

Storage and Transfer
Images can be stored using the internal 16 MB memory or on optional Secure Digital (SD) or MultiMedia (MMC) memory cards. The internal 16 MB memory will store approximately 10 images at the DX6490's highest setting (2304 x 1728), or 18 2-megapixel images. Images can be downloaded to either a Mac or PC via ultrafast USB 2.0, which means it can be connected to any USB-compatible Windows Me/2000/XP and Mac OS 8.6 or later computer without installing any software. When used with USB 1.1 connection, transfer will slow to USB 1.1 rate.

Power and Size
The camera is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery (Kodak KLIC 5000 or KLIC 5001), which can be charged via the included AC adapter. It measures 3.9 by 3.1 by 3.2 inches and weighs 11.9 ounces (excluding batteries and media).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Easy Share.......2007-05-12

This product is perfect for anyone who wants to just go out and take great pictures. The camera can be easily operated with little use of the owner's manual. Everthing is simple to find and use. The 10x zoom on the camera is second to none and the 'through the lense' viewing option is wonderful. The battery on this camera is outstanding for how long it will last and recharging is a snap. The only thing that I wished worked better is the flash. To me it needs more power. Other than that, the camera is great.

3 out of 5 stars Great for Outdoor Photography, Questionable indoors........2006-01-25

I have owned this camera for nearly 2 years now and I can honestly say that it is a good camera for general use but with a few caveats.

If you are taking outdoor photographs it is a fantastic camera. The 10x optical zoom is great until you start to reach the outer fringes then you begin to see a noticeable drop off in sharpness. The digital zoom is useless in my opinion.

The real issue with this camera comes when using it in low light or night situations. Even at ISO 800 and manual exposure the pictures come out less than acceptable. If you do not use a tripod, look for substantial blurring of your photographs. Downloading and using Photoshop CS2 did not help.

I just returned from 3 weeks in Italy and after missing some shots in low light situations I am now convinced I need to upgrade. The camera just would not take the pictures no matter what I tried. If you are considering this camera for a once in a lifetime vacation or for any situation where low light pictures will be important you may want to consider other options.

5 out of 5 stars Back to the Past.......2004-10-01

I just bought the Kodak DX6490. It remided me of my old and faithfull Kodak Retina IIIc. The leather case, the feel of the camera, the Schneider Kreuznach lens. A wonderfull camera. Congatulations to Kodak for going back to a great tradition.

5 out of 5 stars Great camera, very good on the Mac.......2004-08-29

I use my Mac for all my digital images (I really like iPhotos) When I got the camera I was afraid I would have to use their software to get the pictures off of the camera. I was very happy to find that it works well with iPhotos (you only loss the use of the share button, if that is important to you, keeping all my pictures in one place was more important to me) The images are great quality for home use. I use the burst mode (take up to 6 pictures in less then 3 seconds) to get action shots (start taking just before the picture I want, and keep going though till after and hope for the best) In Pasm mode you can change the shutter speed and other settings. The LCD is good for reviewing the pictures you just took and deleting the ones you don't want to keep. It uses the standard SD card for expanded memory (one reason I would not get a Sony since they don't support SD cards) The 10x optical zoom is what got me to get the camera, the greatest in all the cameras I looked at that made use of the SD care standard.

5 out of 5 stars I am so happy with this camera........2004-07-29

I bought a digital camera years ago, before I knew the difference between a good camera and a bad camera.

I have been shopping for a GOOD dig camera for a year now. I didn't want to buy a camera, just to find out it didn't have the features I would use and need every day. Yet, I WASN'T sure exactly what those features were. I knew the resolution was important and also the mega pixels, but what about all the other options out there on the market?

Then one day, while in Circuit City, my husband went to one part of the store while I went to another. I didn't realize that he was checking out THIS camera upon the reccomendation of one of his co-workers. He (also the salesmen) showed me the camera, the zoom, the screen size, and how easily it finds into the hand. Then, they showed me the SHARE button. I was sold on it! (I have yet to use the SHARE button, but am entirely happy with the camera, none the less).

This camera takes pictures that make you re-live the moment. Our family went to a waterpark recently. I took over 100 pics. When I came home and displayed them as a slideshow. It took your breath away, beautiful colors. You could see every droplet of water from my children splashing.

A friend of mine is a SONY SNOB. Only buys SONY products. He has a mid-range Sony dig camera (I am not sure of the meg pix or the model # of the camera). We were at the SAME event recently and exchanged pics. His were dull, sometimes fuzzy looking. But the most noticeable thing about his pics were the color. They just didn't have the clarity of the pics from my camera.

I ordered the camera from Amazon, as I am a loyal customer. If you really want to know about the camera before you buy it. Do what I did, try it in the store. You won't regret it.
